Very great at explaining the lab but spends too much time explaining the lab. She should really be a lecturer instead. If I had her for lecture I know that would be an easy A no matter how hard she grades.
Dr. Thorsen was my Chem121 lab Professor and was a good choice for my first ever lab. She is a tough grader and doesn't always clearly explain everything that she wants from you, so you sometimes have to guess. She is always there to answer questions on experiments, and is really big on rules and lab safety! She is overall an excellent lab prof.
Her class was unnecessarily difficult. My course was one of her first taught at CNU and I think she was just overambitious. The explanations for the lab always took an hour and the amount of work she gave was way too much. She also graded really harshly on the lab notebook pages. I would wait a few years before I took a class from her.
She is a very difficult grader and her tests and quizzes are specific and challenging. Thorsen is detail-oriented, so her lectures go on and on explaining the concept. If you have trouble with chemistry, she's good for going in-depth on concepts, but sometimes she gives too much detail and it gets confusing. Do not take her for lab!
Her lectures are unnecessarily detailed which leads to the students just getting confused and having to rely fully on the textbook. Her tests and quizzes are overly-complicated. In general, the grades received for the class do not correctly represent your knowledge of the subject. Would not recommend.
Worst professor I have had at CNU. I attempted to meet her during office hours, but it was not helpful because so people were there it was difficult to get all your questions answered. She does not believe in curving so even if the majority of the class fails your grade will not change.
Nope. I didn't pass this class and I WILL NOT under any circumstance take it again with Dr. Thorsen. She does not know how to teach this class. She is nice, but spends the ENTIRE class time talking. There are no breaths for questions or elaborations of any kind. The lecture slides are covered in text and she won't post them ahead of time. AVOID!
I had Dr. Thorsen as a lab professor in Chem 121L and she was helpful in the lab aspect, but was an awful teacher for Chem 122. Her explanations were overcomplicated and she would make students feel confused. She also never curves grades on exams and gives extra work to students compared to other lecture teachers. I definitely do not recommend.
Dr. Thorsen is the WORST teacher I've ever had in my life. She overcomplicates all of her explanations during lecture and does not take a single breath after each sentence, so it is extremely hard to follow along with her ppt. slides. I highly do not recommend her!
Dr. Thorsen should not be a professor. She definitely knows her material, but is the worst explainer ever. She also tried to cram in two chapters before the final by posting youtube videos. I found myself staying up until 2 am every night during exam week because she crammed in a lot of new information in a few days while we had to review old info.
Dr. Thorsen was a terrible lecture teacher. I had her for CHEM 121L and she should really just stick with being a lab teacher because it was so difficult to follow with what she was saying, as she was reading ppt. slides. She would ask questions a few times, but students rarely raise their hands because of maybe having a hard time absorbing info.
Dr. Thosen, while incredibly knowledgeable in the subject of chemistry, is a terrible lecture professor. She talks at you and is not great at explaining the material and answering questions. She tends to rush through the material and continually has issues finishing the all material in the class period. Her tests are difficult. Don't take her class
Do not take Dr. Thorsen for lab. She is a great professor and wonderful person but she talks for at least a full hour to hour and a half at the beginning of the lab about nonsense. The labs for this class are so easy and fast yet you'll end up being in the lab for 3 hours or more just because of her unnecessary talking.
Dr. Thorsen is a truly great professor. Very caring and encourages people to come to her for extra help. She lectures for a long time which can be boring but also helpful. There are quizzes before lab every day. She asks for more on lab reports than other professors, but it is easy to get an A if you ask for help on your draft.
Dr. Thorsen is GREAT. She gives a short lecture before you do the lab, and it really helped with understanding the whole concept of the lab. If you do your work, come prepared, and seek out help if you need it, you'll do well. If you don't your grade will reflect it. I'm taking a lecture with her next semester, and I'm super excited about it.
She is definitely a hard grader, if you put in the effort you will get a good grade in her class. She is always available through email or office hours to help you and with things like lab reports you can give them to her before their due and she review it and tell you what to fix. If you put in the effort you get the good grade
Fair. If you send in your lab reports through email to her before the due date, she'll fix your mistakes before she grades it and most likely gives you an extension. the usual grade in the class is a B if you just write out the procedure before but if you actually study before lab day and are prepared, an A can easily be achievable.
Dr. Thorsen is very knowledgable about her subject. Before each lab, "pages" with the lab procedure and outline must be completed, there is a quiz each class along with post and pre lab assignments, plus several lab reports. This class is a lot of work and very time consuming, but can be done! Sadly, each lab takes several hours b/c she lectures.
I like Dr. Thorsen, she's always very helpful in office hours and is quite organized in her labs and lectures. If you are really struggling she will help you out and she seems to genuinely care.
Does not have a specific interest in making sure that her students succeed, seeking to make test class averages to be in the range of the upper 60s to 70. Goes too fast in lecture. Very nice personality though.
Do not ever take her class. It would be better for your GPA and sanity to either take any other professor or at a community college over the summer. She goes too fast in lectures and seeks to give her students the worst chances on tests, claiming that it's because its just a hard class. Take anyone but her.
Dr. Thorsen is unlike any other professor I've had. She is so helpful in office hours and really explains the material taught in class. Her exams make you think and you have to start studying a week in advance for them because they are so concept heavy. Amazing professor and cares a great deal about her students. Utilize her office hours!
While there is constant work, it really helps to reinforce everything taught in class. Pop quizzes are for extra credit, and are pretty easy. Tests are difficult, but not unfair. Incredible in office hours, very helpful
I made the mistake of taking this class at 8am. I am dying. She is ok at lecturing, but much better at working through example problems. You are given note packets with several example problems and take home quizzes. She is very good at giving partial credit for work shown
Stay away from Thorsen. Very sweet lady but that's about it. She knows this subject well, almost too well to be teaching a gen chem class. Her tests are impossible and nothing like the test review. I also has her in lab, and she is ridiculously difficult on the quizzes and lab reports. Really struggling to keep up with this class!
Very nice but makes her tests extremely hard on purpose. Most people are either failing or almost failing.
I had Dr. Thorsen for 121L Last semester and having not had any chemistry in 8 years, personally, she was good to have a lab professor. She played varying styles of music during lab which made it fun. She was a hard grader on lab manuals and the Lab Reports but overall the class was enjoyable.
I regret taking this class at 8am or at all with her. She does give out packets and such but she goes through the lecture rather quickly. No matter how hard I study I keep failing tests to the point I am failing and sapped away my love of science so I had to change my major entirely. She is a very sweet woman, but not a good lecturer.
Okay so I took her for Chem 121 lab and loved her. I thought she would be a great lecture professor, too. I was so wrong. She does not explain the difficult material but spends the entire class explaining basic algebra. She expects us to just know it. If I hadn't taken a class similar to this in high school I would have failed.
I really enjoyed Dr. Thorsen! Yes, sometimes lectures could get a little rough and the practice problems were not very good. First exam was hard, but the other two were perfectly fair. She is amazing in office hours, and really seems to care and wants you to succeed. Extra credit given to help people's grades. Overall, she explains things well.
Dr. Thorsen is a very nice lady and she really wants her students to succeed. She's willing to help you in office hours (even with take-home quizzes!!) Her lectures contain lots of information that she doesn't always have enough time to cover (she held us over pretty much every class) Homework due dates can be unclear as they are changed frequently
Dr Thorsen: Add more interactive elements to class, not just lectures. Also try to describe your point in Less words not more, I always felt overwhelmed by the volume of words. Students: I would not recommend Dr Thorsen. Office hours shouldnt be the only place to learn well, especially if you have a busy schedule. I taught myself from the textbook
Dr. Thorsen: It would also help if you spent more time introducing the vocabulary. You would always jump right into to using a new vocabulary term or symbol before I was familiar enough with it to immediately know what it meant, and you talked so fast that i didnt have time to think about it or go back and look before you moved on to a new point.
Dr. Thorsen was a good professor. She answered any questions students had, was forgiving about late submissions, and always sent out answer sheets. I won't lie, I hated the class. I hate chemistry with a burning passion and it's exceptionally hard for me. That said, Thorsen did not make it worse than it had to be and my many failings were my own.
Dr. Thorsen puts a lot of effort into her classes. This is apparent through her use of Scholar. The only issue that she had in my class was her teaching style. The notes were given so there was nothing to write down, making it easy to get distracted which really affected me. If this were different, she'd be an incredible instructor to all students
Dr. Thorsens class is definitely difficult but very rewarding. There are a lot of quizzes but they help immensely when studying for exams. At the end of the semester, i felt like i was very prepared for the General chem multiple choice exam. If youre taking higher level chem courses, i highly recommend her!
this class was incredibly difficult, but I gained some necessary knowledge ( which I noticed upon acing the final exam ). this class is not for the faint of heart
Chemistry is a very hard subject, and Dr. Thorsen did her best to teach it. She is definitely not the easiest Chem professor, but she is more than willing to help in office hours. However, her office hours almost always have a line as many students were lost and needed help. If you have a good chemistry background, you'll be fine in her class.
Makes her exams extremely hard on purpose. Her tests are nothing like her quizzes, homework, or problems in class. She's very sweet but not a good professor.
Makes her exams extremely hard on purpose. Her tests are nothing like her quizzes, homework, or problems in class. Even if you know the material it's still very hard to figure out the answers on exams. Everybody warns not to take her for a reason. Do not take her if you can avoid it.
I felt that her class was a good introduction to college-level chemistry. While there are quite a few homework assignments, they really help reinforce the material and it's not too hard to keep up with them. Three midterms and a final but she drops your lowest midterm, pop quizzes are always for extra credit, most quizzes are take-home.
I had not taken Chem in high school and have a solid A in the class; she gives study guides and a lot of extra practice that is helpful.
I have taken it twice now and still haven't gotten a good grade. Prof. Thorsen is a nice woman but she spends too much time on the basic algebra and not enough time on the actual chemistry. Even when she does explain the chemistry it almost never makes sense. She also gives way too much homework. The only saving grace are the take home quizzes.
She is a great person, but if you took AP chem in high school, it may go a bit slow. It was personally an easy A, and she gives you many opportunities to earn extra credit through pop quizzes and homework assignments.
Dr. Thorsen was a good professor and was very helpful especially during office hours. You will have to put in the work doing homework, take home quizzes, etc, but if you are willing to work for it an A or B is definitely attainable. If you had strong high school or AP chemistry you will be fine in the class.
Dr. Thorsen's class is very difficult and she spends the entire time talking, often ignoring kids when they have their hand raised. Seemed disappointed when the class got a higher average on test than she expected, and made the next one harder. Saving grace was the take home quizzes.
Very fair
Gives long but clear breakdown of lab before hand. If you want to learn take her. If you want and easy A, I think you should still take her because she gives you clear instructions on how to do the NB and Reports. Prepares you for the final and helps solidify concepts from lecture.... heard shes a tough lecture professor though!
Dr. Thorsen is nice and, but she ignores all of her students request to change. Even though this was an online class, I was ALWAYS printing out papers, downloading multiple different websites, and even had to pay for a website to take attendance and do polls (which can be done on scholar). Only plus is the hw has unlimited try's, but at least 40?s
Dr. Thorsen always is available outside of class time if students are struggling and need extra help. She explains in a lot of detail, so if you have taken AP in high school, you may find her lectures repetitive. She is approachable and is very good one-on-one. All of the exams are free-response, so the class is not an easy A, but it is possible.
A difficult course if you have not seen the content before or since early highschool. I appreciate the quizzes we had because they helped reinforce knowledge. Having so many homework problems has students focus on just finishing the homework and not learning the content. Not a bad thing but just be ready to work. Do extra credit. Good Luck!
Expects students to put in the amount of effort they do for all of their classes combined into hers. Too many homework problems that you end up just trying to get it done since you get unlimited tries. Go to office hours, see a tutor, and do the learning curves, those are the only reasons I'm passing. Tests are extremely difficult.
Dr. Thorsen's recorded video lectures are VERY helpful. Her online classes are packed with example problems. However, sometimes she takes a very long approach to a problem that could have been done much quicker without overexplaining. You have to work for this class, so don't expect an easy A. Dr. Thorsen makes it clear what's going to be on exams.
I dropped the class in fear of failing, and it actually was the final straw in switching my major. As a person, Thorsen is so kind and respectful. As a professor, I hated her lectures and weekly homework consisted of 30+ problems, on top of a weekly quiz, and a test every 3-5 weeks.
Dr. Thorsen is legitimately the most understanding and kind professor you will ever have. She will work with you to get your grade where you want it, and is always willing to help you understand anything you can't grasp. She's generous with extensions, even when you don't deserve it. The content is hard, but she will help you pass.
She is just not a good teacher. Her slides had borderline useless information, while she did barely any practice in class. Covid made it much worse.
I would have enjoyed this class a lot more if I was actually interested in chemistry, but Dr. Thorsen is always ready to help. Shes willing to give extensions on everything for full credit and if you go to her office hours then shell help you through the questions. I love her but I hate chem
Dr. Thorsen is a very good professor, but she has the tendency to give a lot of homework. if you are taking her one piece of advice is that read a lot and do your homework in time or you'll drown with a lot of homework. she also gives extensions which us good
These reviews I believe are not accurate to Dr. Thorsen, she is the most understanding professor and will help you when you need it. Chemistry is not an easy class, but if you do your work and take advantage of office hours you will be fine. There's a lot of homework but it is super beneficial, I would 100% take Dr. Thorsen again.
Dr. Thorsen is such a nice person and definitely gets a bad rep from reviews. Very understanding and always willing to help. Also very accessible outside of class and encourages for you to reach out if you need help. Lectures are very long before the lab but can be helpful for performing the experiment.
This might have been the worst class I have ever taken!! Do not take!!! No extra credit. Not really helpful outside of class!
Dr. Thorsen is so great! She is accessible at all times and is always willing to help students with topics. She also gives extensions on homework when you talk to her, she is very nice and easy to understand.
Dr. Thorsen definitely knows her stuff, but the structure of her class is so difficult to keep up with. Pre-labs, worksheets, quizzes, and lab reports due every single week. Doesn't keep up with grading so you submit a month's worth of assignments before she even gives you feedback to tell you that you did it all wrong. More work than my OCHEM lab!
VERY tough grader on lab writing assignments and doesn't give feedback/grades on assignments until other assignments passed. Extremely long lectures before she even lets you begin lab (usually up to an hour) and gives a quiz, worksheet, notebook, and writing assignment for EVERY lab. Much more time consuming than a one credit course should be.
Dr Thorsen wants you to succeed. She's accessible for office hours outside of class and answers questions quickly through campuswire. You can ask her to check all or part of lab reports before turning them in and she lets you know what needs adjustment. She does give a lot of homework, but it's helpful for studying and she's flexible with deadlines
Interesting teacher, kind of over explains a lot of concepts though, and moves kind of fast
Helpful for lab, explains the lab before hand, and explains if you need to know anything. Office hours are helpful if you need them
Her tests are near impossible. Very nice and friendly character and the reason why I did not drop the class, but I should have because a nice teacher doesn't mean a great teacher. Seems very knowledgeable but has no idea how to teach and share that knowledge because her lectures are very confusion. Did I mention her tests are impossible?
I was nervous to take prof Thorsen because of her reviews on here, but she really wasn't bad at all. There is a lot of information and she teaches really quickly, but if you just show up and put in a decent effort this is a relatively easy class. She offers plenty of help outside of class and wants her students to succeed.
do not take this professor for any chem class she does not teach and her knowledge of the subject is not good outside of the lechers that she does. bad bad bad bad bad and she is hard on tests. and the work is way too much she is a wast of your money and education.
I'm honestly surprised at the negative ratings on here for Professor Thorsen, I thought she was amazing and I'll be taking her Chem 122 class! She can go fast at times but is always willing to help. She gives us "cheat sheets" for tests and always hosts a review session the week before. She uses lots of examples and I truly understand the topics.
Her lectures were fast-paced/rushed, but she's very nice and wants you to succeed. Her tests were quite hard, and her homework is brutal in size/content, but she gives unlimited extensions. You can't get your physical exam back but she posts a graded copy online and gives partial credit for multiple choice. Not my favorite Chem prof, but not bad.
I had Dr. Thorsen for CHEM 121 and 122 and she was AMAZING. She does go through things fast but was very willing to meet with me outside of class. I totally bombed one of the exams but was able to go to her after and understand what I did wrong and how to fix it moving forward. She also replaced our lowest exam score with our final exam score.
Trust me, avoid her at all costs. Not only does she speak super fast during lectures, she isn't really good at explaining how to do certain problems. Especially ones that are on tests. Its like she gets you to prepare for one thing and throws something completely different at you. GO TAKE ANOTHER CHEM CLASS!
I do not want to be rude to Professor Thorsen but do not take her class. She is a very nice lady, but a terrible teacher. She reads off the slides and talks so fast. She expects you to know the material before she teaches it. Her exams are nearly impossible to finish in 50 minutes. If this class is not mandatory for your major DO NOT take it!
Whatever you do, dont take this class with her. Ive attended every class and havent learned a thing. I learn more in my tutoring sessions than I do in class. You will thank yourself later by taking this course with a different professor. Tests and quizzes are impossible and lengthy for the amount of time given. I changed my major because of her.
Dr Thorsen was a great professor! Her out of class work was extensive and the "mandatory" readings were extensive, but I had no trouble succeeding having not read the textbook once. For exams she gives detailed information and tons of review work to do before hand that helped and very detailed feedback on her emails if you ask her about something.
I enjoyed having Thorsen as my professor; she was always willing to talk, very flexible with late work, and had presentation slides for every class that were well-done, clear, and a good resource for studying after class. However, there was lots of/more work given, that was more challenging compared to other chemistry 121 classes.
Amanda Thorsen's teaching ability is less then adequate due to her fast pace and anxiety driven style of teaching, because of this you are forced to teach yourself the concepts she is supposed to help you understand. Worst teacher I have ever had do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Had to teach myself complex multistep problems while understanding which equations to use, in lectures she will skip over important steps for solving for problems and slides that she infers that everyone already knows how to do, even when its a new concept. The homework load is intense and overwhelming, once gave a quiz a day before a test.
Dr.Thorsen will expect students to already know concepts before being lectured on.She has a tendency to overcomplicate problems which makes it really difficult to follow along. The homeworks can be tediously lengthy and not sufficient for learning how to actually do a problem. Not a good class to take if you want to actually understand the concepts.
Dr. Thorsen is a really sweet person, but the way she teaches just isn't easy to understand. She tends to move quickly and talk about topics that we don't need to know for our exams which are extremely long to finish in a 50 minute class period
Amazing professor! Yes there is homework most classes, but Dr. Thorsen is very nice and helps when you ask her. Definitely look over the textbook and study early before exams.
I had Dr. Thorsen for chem 121 and 122. 121 was a lot easier than 122. I would definitely recommend her for 121 as long as you don't mind a bit of homework. I had her my first semester freshman year and on top of all my other classes it really wasn't that much to stress about. 122 on the other hand, I would not recommend her. At all.
She wants you to connect with her and she's very nice. There's a BINGO card extra credit that's awesome. Her classes are extremely lecture heavy, but it's easy to take notes, understand, and follow along except for the hydridization lecture. Her office hours weren't super accessible but if asked, she would make a time. DON'T be late to class.
As someone who has had chem teachers in the past, I can definitely say the Dr. Thorsen is very clear when explaining the content material. She is not very personable in lecture but if you go to office hours she is more than willing to help you out. If you took AP or DE Chemistry in high school, DO NOT take this class. Skip to 122 or organic chem.
Actually do not. I had such a hard time keeping up in this class. She suggests you take "10-12 hours" a week for her class alone. she makes things more complicated than they have to be the embedded tutor last semester didn't do us any good. please be wary when you're in this course bc myself and everyone in my class struggled immensely.
So.Much.Homework!! It's extremely hard to keep up with everything in class, I would be passing if there was less homework. Right when I think I'm all caught up I'm behind again with 0's for incomplete work I didn't know existed.
SO.MUCH.HOMEWORK. Sweet person, but is a very difficult teacher to get through to and can be pretty harsh. Hard to understand and goes really fast with no time to comprehend one topic before moving to the next. Treats her class like you are taking no others and expects you to work solely for this class like it is a full time job.
I stopped looking both ways on the road while I was in this course,
I take 103 with her NOT 121, it's just not an option on here yet. But, she's SUPER fats paced, and takes very little time on each topic. I struggled with certain topics because of lack of clarity I got from her. If I don't do the Aleks(online homework) before class and have the background knowledge already, then I won't understand a thing she says.
Her lectures are kind of useless and I usually just plug in on my headphones and listen to music as I do the homework each class. I will say, I only got 5 multiple choice wrong out of like 30 or something, and I got all the short answers correct, but I got a 75?? Idk it made no sense. Also, I took 103 but thats not an option here??
Dr.Thorsen was undersanding when it came to struggling with the course. She will try to do what's he can but overall its up to you to do good. The course load in this class felt very heavy due to the new HW system ALEKS. I did not really understand it and it often took hours on hours. It was honestly exhausting and the difficulty.
People say she is a terrible professor, but I think she teaches well it is just difficult to understand chemistry
This class is actually awful. Thank God I learned chemistry in high school and didn't have to pay attention since I already knew everything. She moves really quickly, doesn't respond to emails, but it seems like she'll help students with concepts during office hours and lets you redo problems on the final. Teach yourself from the ALEKS ebook.
The only critique I have is that the content is gone through very quickly, and class seems rushed everyday. Other than that, she is very helpful and open to questions. She seems that she enjoys what she does and is always full of life. Homework is straightforward and easy.
Dr. Thorsen is very nice but extremely difficult to learn from. Spends class time going over easy examples to put hard problems on tests and such. Very easy to get behind. She is very accommodating with homework and such and wants you to pass. Struggled so much with this class.
I took Dr. Thorsen for both CHEM 121 and 122 and loved it. Chemistry is difficult and the content definitely reflects it, but all you have to do is put in actual effort and do all the assignments and you will do fine. Dr Thorsen is also so caring and helpful if you reach out about things you struggle with.
Please do the homework. She's an alright prof but if you miss an exam, she won't let you make it up 2 days after the initial test day. Also, I highly recommend to do as many of the "triple P" as possible if you want to have a decent grade in the class.
Dr. Thorsen is a great professor who is so kind and will answer any questions you have. I would definitely one of her classes again, if I was a science major. That being said, the homework is absolutely atrocious.
Study for exams. Do the PPP stuff. You can retake free responses.
She honestly has favorites, she doesn't respond to ANY emails I send. I sent one in the beginning of the and she didn't respond till a month later. She rushes teaching and she doesn't put grades in till last minute. I never know what I have in her class because she is the last to put the grades in.
This was by far the worst class I've taken. Dr. Thor is a very sweet lady, but she is not a good professor. She goes very fast in lectures and doesn't take time to stop and ask if anybody has questions. She is also a very tough grader for her exams and often will mark you points off without giving a reason. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA!!!
I don't really like chemistry, and was nervous to take it going into college, but honestly this is the best option if you just need a science credit. The homework is hard but manageable and as long as you study for the tests using the textbook, you'll be fine. She gives you chances to fix your grades and extra credit opportunities, which is nice.
Her 50-minute lecture should bump up to 75-minute lecture because she goes by lecture FAST. 4 exams, a final exam so 5. Lots of worksheet you can practice on. hard to follow, almost tough grader. kind of recommend for intro to chem which is 103 i think.i lowkey dont listen to her lectures because ALEKS is a good practice and she post the lecture.
