Prof Amarasingam providedd many examples and made sure we could connect with and understand the content by getting multiple people to Skype with the class. These Skype calls allowed students to further understand the topic, as we could get more personal recollections, stories, etc. Overall great course with very fair projects and exams.
I genuinely learned so much in this class - all of it so relevant to what's actually happening in the world today - which is unfortunately rare for a university course. Amar's content is great, and he was willingly to change his syllabus to our interests. A little test-heavy, but would defs take another class with him if I got the chance.
Amar was great this semester! This was my first exposure to university religion studies and he has made such a good impression. Amar provides interesting content that keeps his students wanting more without sacrificing content! I looked forward to his lectures every week and although you definitely needed to put effort into the class it was fair
Amar is an incredibly knowledgeable professor. Lectures were hard to follow at times because theres a lot of content, so he speaks quickly to get through the material. Also, the reading response assignments were each worth 5% of our final grade and were 1500 words each which was a bit disproportionate. Overall this was a super interesting course.
Professor Amarasingam is extremely knowledgeable and an amazing lecturer. He really takes the time to explain and answer questions to ensure that students have a good grasp of the content. I highly recommend taking a class with Professor Amarasingam because he is down-to-earth, funny, and really approachable!
We spent a lot of time covering detailed events of the case studies in class and whilst a lot of that context was necessary to understand the concepts, it didn't leave much room for as much class discussion about the core concepts of religion and violence that as I had expected.
Really enjoyed taking RELS 331 with Professor, Amarasingam. He taught with great enthusiasm in his lectures and I looked forward to every class to learn something new. He was also easily reachable by email for my numerous questions over the course of the semester. Will actively seek out another class with him.
Amar made his course a real joy. The assessments were incredibly fair. I looked forward to this content each week, especially because Amar makes it so clear and easy to follow. I would take any course that he teaches.
Amar is a great professor! The lectures he gave were on heavy, detailed material, but he made it interesting and easy to understand. He was able to answer pretty much any question on the material students asked. I would highly recommend the class and Amar as a professor!
Professor Amar was absolutely amazing. His lectures are interesting, so are the movies and videos we get to watch in class. Test material is based on lectures so as long as you know the content you should be fine. Really easy to talk to and a super caring guy. 10/10 would take his class again.
Professor Amar is a great prof! His course was very interesting, a little lecture heavy (I wish the class was smaller so we could analyze case studies more in-depth) but all in all very eye-opening! Very sweet and funny :) Check out his twitter during your study breaks if you want a laugh or an update on the world
Hes a great prof and really seems to care about his students, also super down to earth!! He also worked to bring in guest speakers which were actually very cool. Id take a class with him if youre actually interested in the subject matter or want to learn something new.
Professor Amar was AMAZING! One of the best Profs I've had at Queen's. He is very clear spoken and easy to understand, he makes the lectures and lecture content enjoyable and he also does not seem to be a horrible person when it comes too marking. This was the first Religion course I have taken over my uni career and I would highly recommend it!
Great lecturer, despite 3 hour long lectures, keeps things interesting. Considerate, you actually feel like the prof cares about his students and wants them to do the best they can.
There are a lot of reading for his Religion and Violence class but they are interesting and informative if you're into learning about cults and other religious movements. The write ups are straight forward and the midterm is fair. You have to show up to class but even if you miss a few things, he'll post the slides later which have all the info.
The kinda prof you'd want to hang out with outside of class. Cool guy, clearly cares about his work and is super knowledgable
Great professor, hilarious and sarcastic in the best way
I had him for 2 classes! Really good lectures, they were always super interesting! Especially the apocalyptic stuff!!!! It does have a lot of readings, but 9/10 they are super interesting! He is super accessible through emails after class!
I especially liked the professors decision to provide a wide range of topics and online readings as this demonstrated the multifaceted nature of each week's topic. The class was well organized and the professors dedication to ensure students understood the subject matter though Skype calls with activists, videos, detailed lectures was appreciated.
Dr. Amarasingam is an inspiring and committed professor, who designed and taught this class with the student experience in mind. A key highlight is how connected is Dr. Amarasingam in his field, bringing to class guest speakers with first hand experiences, which complements scholarly material and provides students with real-world depth.
Never did I think I knew so little about a topic until I took this course. RELS 331 was very eye-opening and I learned so much more than I ever did in some of my other courses lol.. Amar is v chill and the class is v intriguing. There is mandatory attendance, 3 reading journals (reading responses), a film review, midterm, and final exam- not hard!
lots of readings but interesting selection
Amar is truly the greatest prof i have had during my time at Queen's and I make the extra effort to ensure I am in his classes each semester. The coursework and content he chooses is relevant and interesting and his obvious passion for the topics only adds to the enjoyment of the classes. He makes use of great guest lectures who add to the quality.
It was an unconventional year but despite the online teaching mode content was extremely interesting, and Amar made a real effort to keep the course as engaging as possible -- inviting guest lecturers every other week. Assignments were not the typical 12 page essay which was great. Overall, great prof!
Amar is a gem. His classes are interesting an engaging, all while being hilarious and having genuine care for his students. The online school year sucked but this class was a standout.
amar is an absolute beauty and has sweet jordans - not to mention hes a great prof. I took RELS 331 and it was by far my favourite course
30% of your mark is participation Prof was cool Class is a little unorganized, was expected in a class so broad Assignments are easy Tutorials are easy Easy class
Prof has a great personality and can tell he truly cares about his students. You needed to read about 2 to 3 articles as prep for the tutorial each week which were light. Required to read an entire book which isn't long and includes applicable information to the world today.
Professor Amarasingam is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are clear and concise- he posts slides and lecture recordings after class. He is very easy going and clearly cares about the subjects he teaches.
Great class, great professor
Fun class if you like religion
Professor Amarasingam wants you to succeed, and he is willing to do as much as he can to help you.
Really nice guy, gives clear lectures and is happy to clarify any questions during class time.
Class was well taught to keep students interest. Interesting material and had a manageable workload among other coursework. He is extremely understanding, and caring to his students and tries his best to accommodate them. Great Prof and great class. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in the subject matter or who needs a fun elective.
First off, he's a good guy, very open to questions, and explains things really well.He uses powerpoint for every lecture which is helpful and the also records the classes which is super helpful. One thing I wish he did more was repeat the questions that students ask because it's really hard to hear in lecture and on the audio playback. Recommend!
Although Professor Amar usually read off slides during lectures, he was very funny and entertaining. We had to write a take-home midterm, participate in a group presentation, complete a film/book review, and do a take-home final (25% each). Recommend the course to those interested in learning about Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.
Amar is a great prof and cares about his students. some of the readings are really long but he summarizes them well in lectures and does a good job covering tough topics. Slay Amar. Thanks for the 90 on our group project
Readings are long, but other than that really great! Was my first time doing a group project in university and it made me a bit nervous, but it went well!
Endless stories- amazing lectures
I really liked Amar's lectures They are fast paced but you get the hang of it Very interesting and good course 4 main tests throughout the full year 6 reflections, one on each religion learned, reflections are easily marked and not difficult to write textbook not necessary to read attendance and participation in tutorial - 20% - easy to get
Amazing professor he made all his lectures super engaging and the guest speakers were super cool. Definitely recommend taking a course with him!
Dr. Amar is an amazing professor, you can tell he really cares about his students. He's very accommodating and listens to feedback (pushed a few deadlines for us upon request). The lectures were long, but he was good at making them engaging and funny. Assignments were really easy too, but they weren't useless or particularly boring.
One of my favourite profs at queens!
Great professor! Highly recommend
Amazing!
He was so great! The lectures were interesting and he is such a chill guy
great great great Prof and easy bird course if you need one. there are 4 tests throughout the year on the 4 different units. 6 reflections. 2 video book reviews. super easy to get a good mark and really good lectures.
Professor Amar was the best prof I have had for my first year at queens by far. His lectures were interesting, was tailored to recent events happening in media. He was a super understanding prof, extended due dates when necessary. Projects were also very doable, much easier than my science heavy courses. If I could I would retake his class I would!
One of the best professors at Queen's hands down. It's my only class that's longer than an hour but I swear it's the only one I'm able to retain attention through because he makes the lectures interesting and engaging.
THE BEST PROF AT QUEEN'S!! Amazing lectures, super chill guy.
The prof is very funny which makes his lectures all the more interesting. Even though the lectures were 2 hours long I found myself engaged almost the whole time
One of the best profs at queens!!! This guy is hilarious and is a huge chiller. He makes the 2 hour lecture super engaging with his witty humour and sarcastic remarks. Marks are quite easy too!! Definitely will take one of his courses again. If your considering this course/prof then DEFINTELY take it
The best prof I've ever had, super nice and funny. Lectures are very engaging, and assignments are fair. Loved him and this course.
Awesome professor, responds so fast to emails!
Amarnath Amarasingam is one of the best professors I've had. He clearly states what he wants achieved, the tests are simple and an answer key is given beforehand. Highly suggest taking his classes
The content and presentation style were very engaging. The professor was relatable and stayed on topic, demonstrating a genuine interest in ensuring that the students learned the material instead of just preparing for a test and forgetting everything afterward. I would highly recommend this professor and will definitely take more of his classes.
This professor is very professional and nice. He obviously has a lot of knowledge on everything he teaches and makes his lectures engaging and interesting.
Great professor, highly recommend!
Super chill guy. Interesting class, responds to emails, not a hard marker
Really interesting lectures, sometimes a lot of content but overall really good course
Amazing Prof, did an amazing job in teaching the class. Passionate about teaching the course. Really enjoyed going to his classes. Would 100% take this course again and would recommend it to others. Mid terms and finals are very straight forward. Not hard at all. By attending all the lectures and doing your studies. This course is a breeze.
I really enjoyed his class and the way he was so easy going. It made the topics more accessible, interesting and I was self motivated to do the work because I actually found it quite engaging.
Genuinely one of the better professors at Queen's. He outlines his lectures and assignments very clearly and is excellent at presenting the course content. I hope I'll either get the chance to work with him in the future or take another one of his courses at one point or another.
He knows what he is talking about, and has actual professional experience in the topics we are learning. He is an Entertaining Lecturer. Amar has a sense of humor and is kind and respectful.
Seriously nothing bad to say. Great lecturer and kept us engaged even during our three hour classes. Lectures were very well outlined and informative, and he was extremely knowledgeable. Such a kind man, hoping to get him as a prof again in the future.
I never leave reviews for profs but Professor Amarasingam was that good. Would recommend his class 100%, the material was super interesting, classes were awesome, and the prof isn't anal (rare). Go to class and you'll do good in his class. Or don't, I don't think anyone, including the prof, really cares.
He's really kind, has clear instructions for what he expects in exams or other submissions and grades nicely. His lectures and assigned readings are super interesting, and making the lectures enjoyable is a top priority for him. I'd take a lecture with him again any time!
Awesome professor!
Has a clear grading criteria for tests and written papers. No confusion in what will be asked on a test; professor provides the terms you need to study a week before the test. Posts all the slides and lecture recordings before lecture. Attendance counted as a portion of attendance; at the end of class, fill out a Google Form.
Professor amar is the best prof i've ever had. Somehow manages to make 2 hours feel like 20 minutes, assignments and tests are simple and clear. TAs can be iffy, but it's worth it! I literally will be registering for every course this guy teaches, he convinced me to minor in religious studies.
One of my favourite professors so far. His lectures are engaging and interesting, making 2 hours go by in a flash. He gives the test questions in advance with very clear expectations on what he is looking for in your answers. Everything is done to make you want to actually learn the content instead of just cramming for tests.
What a legend. Really interesting classes. Obvious he cares about what he teaches, and cares about us. Would love a drink with him.
Great lectures, super interesting and also asks about what topics students want to dive deeper in. Amar is always open for questions and really cares about the students. Great overall course, would recommend if genuinely interested in religion. You won't love it if you're just taking it as a bird course though.
Such a great professor, I had an amazing semester! The lectures are super interesting and Professor Amarnath is able to make them both informational and engaging. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes.
Great professor, very easy aswell. Make sure to show up to Lectures & Tutorials, very little studying
Great professor with super engaging and interesting lectures. He's also super understanding with assignments if you need an extension. Loved his class and would 100% take it again!
Took this course and have gotten to listen to a guest lecture from Prof Amar in another religion class (RELS162) and he is always super interesting to listen to! Gives honestly engaging and informative lectures, you will always be surprised with how much you have learned at the end of each one. Highly recommend if u have any interest in Religion!
I'd recommend Prof. Amar's class to EVERYONE. Our class, Christianity and American Politics, he was so engaging to listen to! We cover a lot of material in a 3hr lecture, so i thought it would be boring, but it was acc really fun! He posts his slides before class, and a recording after: really accessible! Content isn't hard if you show up to class.
Great class, very very interesting and thought provoking, would 100% take again. Content is awesome, and lectures are clear and easy to follow. One of the best classes I've taken in my 4 years at queens
One of the best profs i've had in my undergrad. the 3 hour lectures are also extremely entertaining and he usually adds a break in the middle as well, so its very manageable. he's also super clear about what he's looking for on tests and assignments, so its pretty easy to do well in the class. just make sure to attend!
Professor Amar was awesome. He was my first ever prof in first year, and definitely set my expectations very high for all my other professors. Before each tests he breaks down exactly what is expected to cover, which I found insanely helpful as the course was content heavy imo - so this narrowed it down greatly.
Great prof! I definitely recommend taking his lectures. He has a good teaching style and keeps everyone engaged, even during a three-hour class. He is also very fair in terms of grading and late policies. 10/10!!
Hes's great! A very kind grader for the midterm and final. Would totally take again!
Such a nice and understanding guy
Hands down the best prof I have ever had. Makes what would have been boring content incredibly interesting and keeps you engaged. I love him, would 100% take his classes in the future!
Lectures were very interesting and he himself was really easy to listen to. He was so helpful especially when it came to the tests since he gave a list of terms for us to study. Overall, great guy and amazing prof.
honestly top guy. made the information very digestible. easy to talk to and could go to when you need help. clearly smart and has a lot of knowledge in his field. top guy, top prof. the goat. highly recommend any class with this prof.
Great guy, very laid back but still engaging in lectures. I learned a lot in the course and really liked the assignment/test split.
