She is ok:) she is a hot teacher;-) Take her for sure.
Good professor. Easy to learn. Concentrates on the work being learned, rather than participation. Answers any questions you have. Fun, makes the class interesting.
She has a really sweet personality and she's really fun to listen to. Her tests are extremely difficult though, so if you're good at psych, shes perfect for you. If you want easy tests, go somewhere else.
I really like this class because the professor has made the class interesting. She has a great sense of humor, and at the same time is a thorough teacher. She tries her best to make everything understandable, and if it is not clear to the class, she will brake it down until we have got it. I would definitely take a class with her again
shes a really great teacher, she tries to help you in every way possible, if you just read her slides and texts, its an easy A, she gets distracted very easily and may stumble on her words a lot but shes a great teacher, take notes. its very hard for you to fail this class, and if you do you really didnt care about your grade anyway.
It was an alright class. I didn't have a real interest in psychology but she still made it enjoyable. I never read a page of the textbook and based learning the slides and lecture--worked out fine. The final/last test was tough, too many indirect questions/word problems type of deals. She's a good professor overall though--obvious effort :).
She teaches to the point. Answers any/all questions. Doesn't rushes.
The class is easy, and she is a nice teacher. She stumbles over her words a bit and often loses her train of thought, but that's not such a big deal. Class can be a bit dry and boring as it focuses on the sciency side of psychology. But then again, if that is your thing, then you might like it better. 3 tests, multi choice, that is all.
Her class is pretty easy if lectures are attended. She lets students print out presentation slides before lectures. Grades are pretty much based entirely on 3 tests that she gives throughout the semester, and the lowest test grade is dropped at the end.
She's very knowledgeable. Though a bit unclear at times (evident in her occasional stuttering and off-tangent topics), she's very helpful, and will try to address all questions. It's an easy class. I'm taking it right now, and the only reason I'm writing on ratemyprofessor.com is because she actually checks it. Hopefully this helps in her teaching.
Amber is the first best professor I have at Hunter. She doesn't like us to call her professor and we all call her Amber. She is very smart and sweet. She makes everything clear and will repeat if we ask. 3 multiple choice tests, 50 questions, that's all.(Drop the lowest grade!)Highly RECOMMENDED!!Take her if you can!
Amazing professor, she made me look forward to attending the class. However it may be more interesting to prospective students who are more into the biological/chemical/neurological aspect of psychology, because for me that was one of the more dry parts of the semester (luckily I already knew enough about it a high school class to get through). Reg
Highly recommended teacher. She teach very well, tried to make psych easy to understand. And always there after class for help. Although talks about her boyfriend too much lol.
Helpful, but spends way to much time repeating herself.Takes a long time returning back test results.
She is most likely the best teachers at Hunter. Always trying to be supportive and clear in explaining material. However, beware of her tests. They are hard and tricky and you practically have to memorize the book and notes for an A because there are alot of short answer and fill in the blanks, you need to recall specifics. Strict grader.
Im taking her for ethology right now. Shes pretty awesome and really into what she teaches. She likes to involve the students and is def against a straight talking lecture.
Amber's an amazing teacher, her specialty is biochem in psychology, so there's a bit of an emphasis on that, but not much so don't let it scare you. Very helpful, very fair grader, not much work so you can calmly take the material in, which is interesting in itself. Took it at 9pm, never fell asleep. great class.
I don't particularly prefer her as a teacher although she is a nice person. I find her to be confusing when she speaks b/c she stops and starts and loses focus which causes me to lose focus. Her tests are ridiculously annoying.
GREAT TEACHER. JUST STUDY AND YOU WILL PASS. she isnt out to get you.
amazing amazing amazing prof. TAKE HER! She posts her slides on blackboard which make like & studying easier...it allows you to actually listen and participate in the lecture instead of trying to jot down notes! Shes fun and easy to approach! Her tests get a little tricky but nothing to worry about if you come to class and pay attention!
One of the best professors ever! She is sweet, smart, and very well organized. I thought Ethology would be difficult but thanks to Amber I just became really interested in the subject and I learnt so much!. Thanks Amber! You are great!!
Professor Alliger is PASSIONATE. If you try, there is no way you won't do well in her class. She rewards work. Most kids don't try, just put some effort. She'll love you for it.
she is a nice person but losses focus when lecturing. her test include a lot of information, if you dont have a good memory try someone else. the questions are annoying and seems like there made to trick you. attendence is not required but is necessary. overall it was interesting, however if i could i would not have taken her class.

professor loves the fact that she deals with animal. she is animal friendly but professor unfriendly. her teaching sucks and class is racy and boring. wish i never took her. she is a very hard grader. avoid her if yiu can
I had her for an Intro Psych class, and she is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She stimulates the students interest in the subject and tries her best to make the class interesting and the tests passable. She wants you to do well and has an enormous amount of passion for what she's teaching and it made me want to attend class.
omg please come on time to her class, that made the difference between me being bumped up a grade. Otherwise 4 papers, of which 1 is independent and based on your own research. 1 presentation, and independent proposal. And participation counts. Decent teacher, and very friendly, just respect her like all other professors. Can def recommend
Professor Alliger is absolutely AMAZING... she is the best professor I have ever had. You will work extremely hard but she will totally reward you come grad time. As a bonus she is ridiculously hot, intelligent, and interesting.
Shes one of the most amazing Professors you can have, she not only works hard but motivates students to give their 100 percent. She is a hardworker and will make every effort to help those that work hard. I reccomend taking her class because she tells you exactly what she expects, its up to to the student to work to that level to earn a good grade.
Excellent professor.. she works hard to motivate her students and never moves on from a topic unless everyone in the class understands the lesson. She's also more than willing to help one on one if you really don't get it. Test are reasonable. Once you read, do the homework, and understand the topics - you'll do well on the tests and in the class.
OMG SO GOOOOOD AGDGKJDHAKJHDK DH
Very passionate about the subject, very understanding of students problems, extremely helpful, her lessons are really interesting..besides a few boring movies I'm sure she even hated. The papers are hard and long and sometimes tedious but by the time you get to the fourth paper it'll be breezy! You should take 250 with her!
you will walk out of her class knowing stats in your sleep which i'm learning is very helpful in the proceeding classes. i was petty nervous at first but i really ended up loving this class!
She was a bit intimidating at first, but I ended up loving her! She's definitely not an easy A, but if you work hard and respect her you will get your A. I came out of this class knowing how to right an excellent paper in a limited amount of time. She's a great professor and I would definitely recommend her. She tells you exactly what she expects!
This class is a requirement for psychology majors. Not being that interested or that great in math I thought I would never pass. Prof. Alliger was so dedicated and so helpful (both in an outside of class) that I passed. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should go. There's so much covered in one class and lab.
Prof. Alliger is very helpful but she is NOT an easy A in any case. If you are really interested in the subject take the course with her. She loves when students show interest which can benefit your final grade. Overall 4 papers, final, participation, presentation.... lots of work!
The best, hands down. You will learn A LOT from this class, esp. if you want to go to grad school. Participation and no late attendance is a must. Genuinely helps her students if they work hard. And yes you will work your arse off, no slacking off, but best results in the end. MUST TAKE
For future generations think twice or 3 times before taking 250 in summer.Very difficult class, tons of work (4 papers, final, proposal, presentation, participation)Alliger will make you work the way you never did before,be prepared. She is knowledgeable, passionate about science & very helpful, talk to her if you have concerns. My hardest A in 3 years
This class is difficult and you will definitely work hard for your A. You will also become a better paper writer, since she is so tough on plagiarism. Experiment days were a bit frustrating but other than that she's great. You should take her if you intend to go into research
Alliger is great teacher. She can seem a tough at times, but you can tell it's just because of her passion. If you take her and her class seriously, she will take you seriously. Class participation helps in the biggest way. She was and is one of my favorite teachers at Hunter.
Alliger... *shakes head* She's a great professor but overly eager to show off her doctorate. She'll make you feel inferior and is inevitably pretentious sometimes. I don't think she's a bad professor but this course being as challenging as it is, I would not recommend her. If you can avoid her - you should. Nearly 3/4 of the class got C's.
I don't know what the student before me is talking about, Professor Alliger the best professor i've had in Hunter. She genuinely cares about the students and wants to help them become better researchers. She is tough when she corrects papers but that's because it's hard to write a good paper, she's a fair grader and always offers her time to help.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! She really got me more interested in research. Always has visitor from programs that help students get grants and scholarships. Wonderful in every way possible and will really prepare you for graduate school. Made me a better writer for sure! Plus she is very pretty :)
Dr. Alliger is incredibly helpful and didactic. Getting an A in this course is very doable with her! She not only gave me career advice but actually sat me down and connected with me; she genuinely cares about her students. I have no idea why someone would have anything bad to say about her. 10/10; I WHOLEHEARTEDLY advocate her for Psychology 250
Dr. Alliger is more than a great professor, she is your own personal career advisor! She will motivate you to apply to internships, go to graduate school and succeed. Talk to her and she’ll do everything from helping you find a career goal to getting the tools and motivation to pursue it. Fun fact: she mentioned over half the class got A’s.
She is a fantastic teacher. She will push you hard but give you the guidance you need to actually do well in the course. I had her for both Psych Stat & Gen Ex,& got an A- in both. She truly cares about her students & will sit down with each of them to discuss their papers. Do the work & you will actually learn something while getting a good grade.
Professor Alliger is a wonderful professor. She is very helpful and clear. Psych 250 is a tough class but Professor Alliger is always there for her students to aid them. She is genuinely interested in her students and cares about each and every one of them, something that I personally find rare in Hunter.
Professor Alliger is extremely helpful and very passionate about the subject. I took this course in the winter and I was very concerned about the intensity. It was a lot of material but she presented it clearly and always had time for questions. She was very kind and was invested in everyone doing well in the class.
Don't buy into the hype. I got a high grade in her class but if I could do it over I wouldn't take it with her. She's good at explaining but gives way more work than necessary. Too intense. If you can, take with another instructor.
you made Me better
Dr. Alliger is the BEST professor at hunter! She made 250 in the summer bearable. She believes in her students so much and that's rare to find at hunter. Even though 250 is an intense class, Alliger is so helpful that getting an A is totally doable with her! And her love for rats is adorable! Definitely recommend her!
She is a passionate teacher but if you don't plan on pursuing a career in Psychology, I would recommend somebody easier. Her exams are very conceptual and have only one math question. Personally, I prefer math questions over conceptual. Take this class with her if you are passionate for the subject.
Very demanding.. A lot of work for her assignments. Only one exam, and that was pretty straightforward.
Gives way too much work. Didn't find her helpful. Only take her if you truly enjoy research work. Four highly difficult papers and a cumulative final (multiple choices, fill ins, essay section) of all the lectures.
Listen, if you want an easy A, you won't find it here. The amount of effort professor Alliger puts in her students is amazing and her guidance is invaluable. I did not like this class because of all the scientific writing, but boohoo, it's par with psych. She is definitely a diamond in the rough - tough on the outside but beautiful on the inside.
Professor Alliger can be tough but it is all worth it in the end. She grades fair and tries to help you the best way she can. You can e-mail her to help you revise your paper (at least it was possible when I took her.) She won't let you take the easy way out. Overall she is a fine professor I would even call her my mentor.
I found this class very easy. The homework was a bit tedious at times because there is chapter homework due almost very lecture. Her tests may seem hard, but they're actually very easy if you study and ask questions in class. Her lectures are great and she will go over everything you need to know 75 times if you don't get it. Would take again!
I found her very not personable. She's good at lecturing, but not so much at speaking individually. I found her to be condescending. The tests are mostly concept, with little math involved. She is a fair grader, and will try her best to give you points on the test as long as you give her something to work with. LOTS of homework. Be prepared to work
First thing she said was that she isn't a people person that is why she is an animal behaviorist....; believe her she is not a "people person". She is a good Professor and answers all the questions you can think of. But get ready for loads of homework and sleepless nights and wanting to pull you hair out. The work is tedious.
You will learn, but she is very rude when you ask her questions. She has an ego, but why? You are teaching psych stats, not rocket science. Relax! Aced her class and barely showed up. Take someone else if you can. Her attitude just made me want to stay far away. You do not have to deal with this.
Professor Alliger is a VERY demanding professor but she does it in a way that helps you understand the pretty difficult material. Everything is clear cut so if you put in the work, getting an A is still possible. Her exams are a joke compared to all the homework she gives so once you understand and do all of it, you're golden.
If you are planning on taking any other heavy work load course along with Alliger's class, don't. She assigns 2 homeworks for all 17 chapters (one textbook, one online) and there are 3 exams + a cumulative final (one grade gets dropped). A lot of work but you will leave the class knowing more statistics than you would taking any other stat class.
Best prof ever
She gives really good advice if you're planning on going to grad school. She's really helpful and would actually spend time in class to make sure everyone understands what she's teaching. She is also kind of inspirational and motivates you to work hard. She's also a pretty lenient grader.
From what I understand, Amber Alliger is "in charge" of the PSYCH 248 master course. When I emailed her on the second day of class asking where to find the textbook homework (still can't find), she literally responded with "why are you asking me this." Thanks for your help. It literally would have taken you 10 seconds to answer my simple question.
She seems intimidating at first but she's overall a great person, she's not easily approachable though she will give an attitude when it's necessary lol, but she will respect you as long as you show your effort to pass the class (DUH!). ITS ALOT OF WORK! I'm warning you all! Do not take this class along with other heavy workload classes.
This course gives loads of homework, including written hw, online hw, and lab hw (usually finished in class). It isn't exactly difficult however. For her exams, she tests us more conceptually rather than mathematically which is difficult for some and easier for others. TAs are almost always available, but I didn't go once to them and managed.
This semester was probably the most difficult ever because of this class. If you are taking more than 1 class with it I WOULD NOT recommend it. There was textbook homework, online homework, and lab homework. Each homework took about 4-5 hours and you have to show all the work just for her to tell you they grade only 1 question! NEVER AGAIN
Her lectures are great. Anything important in the textbook (or on the test) is covered in her lectures. She's very stern but she's a good teacher, cares about her students. Also lets you know about numerous opportunities going on.
This woman was incredibly rude at times and often came off as being a bit cocky. Aside from this, I did learn something and did do well in her class. I'm just convinced that she needs a major reality check... Her position doesn't pay enough to teach us AND degrade us since our "BA's in psych will get us nowhere." Take her, but ignore her...
Her exams are being set up to fail. Stay away from her unless you are overly smart in Statistics.
Dr. Alliger is one of the most caring and diligent professors I have ever had or worked with. She is tough but it comes from a good place - she is not afraid to challenge you to prepare you for the future. In 348, she provides great support for her TAs. Psych 248 is a hard class no matter what professor you take, and her 348 TAs are there to help!
Dr. Alliger is undoubtedly the most insightful, considerate, knowledgable professor in this institution. She cares about her students tremendously, is incredibly supportive and very humorous, allowing for easy digestion of difficult material. She does her best to work with all learning styles - her exams directly reflect material in the slides.
Although there was a fair amount of homework, its there to help prepare for the lectures which is more helpful than people realize. If you stay on top of your work you'll be fine. Focus a lot on what she says in class, she REALLY emphasizes what will be tested on (mainly conceptual) & always takes the time to make sure you understand the material
From my experience, it doesn't seem like this professor cares too much about the students. Instead she seems more interested in spitting out information and finishing class. She was my last straw. Out of all the bad professors and those that did not seem to care at all at Hunter she was by far the worst and my reason for leaving.
I'm surprised at some of the other reviews because she really breaks down stats in a way that makes it easier to understand. Homework can be math heavy but the exams can be more conceptual. Homework does take time and can be a lot but helps with exams. Professor Alliger encourages you to ask questions and will go over anything you don't understand.
Dr. Alliger is one of a kind. She really does care about her students but you have to show her you care about your education just as much. She tends to yell during lectures which was hard on my head. But she will not only teach you everything you need to know about stats but to prepare you for the career you are pursuing. She is well respected.
She's hardcore but she cares so much about her students and will repeat a concept multiple times over to make sure everyone understands. The class is homework heavy but all stats classes are. She's always open to answering questions and speaks freely about anxiety and her own fears. I enjoyed her spirit and confidence and enjoyed the class!
Amazing professor she does everything possible to make it easy for you, her tests are straight forward no trick questions if you know the material. Only way you will fail is if you don't read the chapters and do the homework.
Part 2: Exams are conceptual-know how to apply concepts. Hardly any math. She says in class what will be on the exam. I never went to review sessions, but they offer it. I did bad at first because I gave up, but then did well on my last two exams. 93 on finals. Top 3 exams scores out of 4 counts. 50% of grade is exams. Try to score 70 percent or up
Part 1: Took this in Spring 2018. This class I had to work my hardest in. She will scare you the first days, but she loosens up. She makes you come to class since you need to submit HW in person. Late--and she won't accept it. There is A LOT of homework and Webassign. Lab is easy. Exams are tricky, but pay attention very closely to her words.
Part 3: DO YOUR HW(20% of grade). Lab is EASY! If you miss 2 HWs, it decreases your grade significantly. HW takes 1-3 hours depending on length. Do Webassign. This class isn't a joke and procrastinating will fail you. Don't think you can cheat through this class, she will catch you and she has many TAs. Alliger cares for you, but makes you WORK!
She cares about you but you have to work for it! I didnt do well on my exams but between webassign and the lab work I managed to pass with a solid B+. I was taking eight classes when I had this one. Go to the review sessions and get a study group because stats is no joke. Shes there to help and only goes over the concepts rather than the math.
The class is not difficult if you study a few days prior. I could have definitely gotten an A if I didn't slack off in the middle of the semester. 75% of your grade is based on your top 3 exam grades and 25% is based on textbook quizzes.
Isn't clear on what's going to be on the tests, has a horrible attitude and isn't very helpful or even accessible.
TESTS DETERMINE YOUR GRADE. No grade curving, horrible professor. A bit condescending to be honest. But she seemed like she knows her stuff. Take her if you're willing to teach yourself and are a good test taker. I don't know how her rating is so high. A little suspicious if you ask me ;)
You must read both the textbook and the slides that she posts online to prepare for her exams but even then there may be some questions that will trip you. Does not curve grades but will curve exams by a few points. Lectures are not very motivational and the slides are online so you can just attend class to take the exams.
She's kind of hard. You need to definitely study on your own after class.
By far the worst class/teacher. She isn't very caring towards her students. She doesn't exactly answers questions regarding to the test. All she does is read from the slides without explanation so going to class is honestly pointless. If you don't have the ability to read the slides and the book on your own switch professors
RESPECT IS EARNED, NOT DEMANDED - that is her biggest fallacy. She goes out of her way to look professional but it comes off as imposing and authoritarian. She knows her stuff and worked hard to get there, unfortunately she kinda does come off as condescending. Style aside, in teaching she is all in all ok. if you work hard on your own u get A
Run as fast as you can. 40-60 slides per chapter. Unnecessary amount of work and reading for a 100 level course. Currently a senior taking this class for credit and never have I taken a 100 level class within or outside my arguably difficult major that has this much content. Avoid at all costs.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever met. I have taken this class as a freshman for credit and literally regret it. Her exams don't make sense to the lectures and she doesn't explain the material well. It makes it impossible for someone to pass if they dont get much of what she saying. All she does is repeat her notes on the slideshows.
Prof A gives no homework and you don't have to show up for the lecture in order to pass. her exams come directly from the textbook. so if you juts read it and study it you'll do fine. her grading policy is very clear and easy. she makes her lectures interesting, but again they're not necessary to attend. Just do your work and stop being lazy.
Excellent professor, passionate about the subjects, keeps the classes interesting and fun. Course provides you with lots of supporting material. You do need to study, and I recommend attending classes. Her voice makes me stay attentive and immediately remember the content. She cares about students succeeding. Only sad, this class ends in a week
She is kind of rude. Be careful of what you ask her to get proper, polite answers to your questions. All things aside, she's fairly okay at teaching but don't fully depend on her lectures.
literally on the first day of class she read these reviews and explained why she isnt what people say she is, which turned out to be true in the end. She doesnt care about her students. She doesn't offer review or tries to make the material more easy for a 100 class. She takes it too serious into another level. If it werent for corona, i would fail
Amazing teacher! I took her in the summer and really enjoyed her teaching style. If you go to lectures and do homework youll pass her test. In lectures shell help you with whatever you need and doesnt make you feel dumb at all! Shell really help you understand the material and cares for her students as long as you email her! Go to her lectures!
made me literally hate psychology, does not answer questions, is not understanding when it comes to confusion which is especially difficult during covid, I dread this class because of this woman's poor attitude. Probably lacking happiness, shouldn't take it out on students. complained about poor rate my professor reviews on the first day of class
She spent a lot of time making an online version of a textbook so that we wouldnt have to pay for one. Its really clear and easy to use and everything is laid out seamlessly in the syllabus. As long as you pay attention to what she says, youll ace the class.
Literally worst professor Ive ever had. I missed a test due to an internet outage during a semester when we were entirely online. I was told that my outage wasnt her responsibility and that she wasnt reopening the test even if I never even got to view it. I had to take a 0 as a test grade when I literally had no fault in the matter.
Psych classes are usually just memorizing/understanding theories and vocab words. There is no insane workload which was nice, it's just simply you gotta learn it and there's no way around it. Her tests were fair, and I think she drops one test grade. I wouldn't take this class as an "easy" class though if you're not familiar with psych.
Does not allow questions during class, which is unreasonable. Very bad attitude, gets easily annoyed when people ask for clarification because they are confused. Doesnt want you to email with questions unless you ask a classmate first, which doesnt make sense as shes the professor. Overall, would recommend a different professor for Psych100.
I love Dr Alliger. She is big on formality but that's how it is supposed to be. She is very professional and I really enjoy her lectures. Dr Alliger is very passionate about her field and although she speaks fast, I truly grasp what she is teaching for every lecture. Her tests are very fair and if you study you will be fine.
Professor Amber Alliger is probably one of the nastiest professors at hunter. On the first day she literally spent half the lecture explaining why shes not a horrible professor.. but you come to learn she is. Shes very Narcissistic, condescending and uncaring. In terms of work load - If you cant teach yourself look into another class
The bad reviews aren't baseless but prof still understands her content and will respond to most questions in her BB collaborate chat. its a straightforward class and the tests can be a bit tricky but are slides/lecture related. if you can find a different psych class great, but if you get alliger you aren't doomed. She's not that terrible.
I didn't learn. Plain and simple. I passed with flying colors, but I didn't learn. If you're looking for an easy A or a credit, you found the right class, but if you're genuinely interested learning psychology, you might want to steer clear of this class. The second day of online learning and she started yelling at students for being confused.
Do NOT take her class, you will FAIL! I took Pysch 101 as an elective course thinking that it would be fun and easy, boy was I wrong. The test material is very tricky and difficult to understand (her exams are based on theory and hypotheticals instead of normal examples/definitions). You will just end up stressing yourself out if you take her class
Amazing professor. 75% of your grade is 3 tests(one dropped, even could drop the final!!) and 25% are for quizzes which have unlimited tries, and u have all semester to do them.
Well, I didn't really understand the materials because the class was so fast-paced. Lectures weren't presented well and were sometimes confusing.
The professor is pretty mean-spirited and unfair. Writes in a very confusing, makes you learn by yourself and do homework for the chapters you read by yourself which she grades later. During the lectures she goes over the material you have already learn on your own. Lectures are her reading off of her slides - quickly without any real explanations.
I would not recommend Prof. Alliger. Idk if it was because I was online and she was stressed but she seemed like she could not manage the class. Screaming and yelling like if were children. Not a professor whos understanding. Is not caring either.
Professor Alliger gets a bad rap from students who didn't care enough to meet her clear and reasonable standards. She sticks closely to her syllabus and even provides a free textbook for the class. The class itself is content-heavy, unavoidable in an intro to psych. Be respectful and take the initiative to be a good student - you'll be fine.
Awful, awful, avoid her at any cost. Talks about her private life rather than course material, during the lecture she only read the slides and no explanation (dare you to ask a question), tests are designed to trick you rather than test your knowledge. Makes me hate Psy.
I do not understand the bad reviews around her. Yes, she does come across as "snappy" at times, but she can only answer so many questions in a class with 400 students. She allows students to stay after class for further questions. She is clearly passionate about the subject. The class has 3 tests and homework quizzes; you work for your grade.
Dr. Alliger is awesome. She's tough but don't hate her for it. She's pushing because she wants her students to suceed. You'll learn she's actually very kind, but the first few weeks she puts up a tough front. Stick with it. She is brilliant and WORTH the trouble.
She does not fully elaborate her assignments and never gives study guides. Often the questions on her exams are written confusingly. I would not recommend this class if you do not like to teach your self chapters worth of notes and readings.
Horrible professor. Dr. Alliger made my life a living hell. She was very condescending and rude to students for asking simple questions. I do not recommend taking her if you cannot keep up with the fast pace & heavy lectures. STAY AWAY.
Alliger has been tough. Her exams are worded confusingly sometimes and she offers no accommodations. A student had to take it on a plane during a family emergency and she was very passive-aggressive about Muslims requesting a test be postponed during Eid. There are no rubrics for ethograms/papers and it's hard to understand what she wants.
Overall she is rude and not even on top of the class. Grades get back to you slowly and she has no mercy and is not accessible. She is not nice to people who email her and is just very scary to deal with. Stay clear she will stress you out all semester.
Amber Alliger is the worse!! Shes rude to students, doesnt care about anything and barely grades. Oh yeah be careful to not have anything on her exams date. She will NOT, I repeat she will NOT accommodate you for anything regardless of whats she says in her emails and her syllabus. whether it is family, religion, anything at all.
Prof Alliger is a hardass and she is not open-minded at all. She is pompous and rude over email and expects to be treated with respect when she is extremely disrespectful in accommodating students on emergencies and religious holidays. The professor has a real attitude problem and the class is nothing special but she barely gives instruction.
Alliger is straight forward and do not tolerate non sense. On 5/11/21 one student made a huge stink in a GC about eid & Alligers response. The bad ratings are all from a selective few who were saying horrible things about Allier bcuz they can't have their way. Alliger is not a bad professor she's just not maternal & students do not like that
Prof Alliger's class is alright the tests are manageable but lecture heavy but as a person she is very rude and passive-aggressive. There was a student in our class who had to take a test on a plane because she would not accommodate them. She barely explains things. I would not be writing this review if she had not been so disrespectful to student
Alliger is disorganized, easily angered/stressed, and unwilling to admit fault. Her lectures & exams are poorly written with many typos- it causes confusion for all. She made ignorant&aggressive comments to a student who made a small request for a test falling on an important Muslim holiday&then gaslit the student, calling her a manipulative liar.
I normally never have such strong opinions on teacher but she really just simply isnt good. Her tests have typos and shes incredibly disrespectful towards her students. Im sure if you read below you will find plenty of examples of that. It is scary to email her as she is very picky about how people refer to her ( use DR. Alliger).
Probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Professor Alliger was hardheaded and disrespectful at times throughout the semester. She was unclear with instructions and required us to figure most of the projects on our own. She flipped out on students whenever they had a genuine question or any confusion on their end.
I like the way she teaches. She a bit out spoken and rough around the edges and loves cats like me. her class consists of a paper, ehtogram 4 exams and 1 final. You don't get the test results right away or even get to see what you got wrong. its totally up to you to take her she's tough you really got to work for an A+ cool lectures
Recently a classmate requested testing accommodations for EID and Allgier denied it for no good reason. This is illegal according to Law § 224-a, which is posted on CUNY's website. Alliger is stressed all the time, often yelling at students. She could be a great teacher because she's passionate but she wants to be a hardass instead of supportive.
just don't do it trust me shes extremely unclear with her intruction and she has this thing she calls "snarky" which is bascially her 70% of time or her being disrespectful. she will call you out for asking question. alot of students end up having a ton of work load bunched up due to her miscommunicating.
I have never in my life stressed about a class this much. Her exams are all based on lectures with no study guide. Her class is test heavy and there is a lot of material on the exam. Aside from being a hard examiner she is very rude to students. I know I am not the only one who experienced this in her class. I would not recommend this class.
This professor was not clear with her grading criteria or what she expected from us (ethogram/final paper). She made up what she expected from us in these assignments over the course of the semester, very confusing. Lectures were interesting and this class does demand studying. Very knowledgeable Dr. but did not create a safe space to ask questions
Ive Never seen a professor act more unprofessional than I have with Alliger. She throws constant aggressive temper tantrums if you ask a Q or do not address her properly(Dr.). Wont address students w/ respect. TONS of errors on dates/notes/exams and she wont own up to an error. Most of the teens acted more respectfully than she did. Embarrassing.
This professor is an ok professor. She is very caring to her students if they take the time to engage with her and ask her questions on the material. She's not organized as other professors and gets upset when she needs to repeat herself. Her exams are semi-hard, but it's doable. Overall if you want a pretty good professor, take this professor.
You can rewatch the lectures and the tests still do not make any sense. Not only was she unwilling to accommodate students, but there was actually an incident. A Muslim student asked for Eid accommodations and she was not only ignorant of what the holiday was but denied said student the accommodation. Do not take this class, I am serious.
WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER. Her tests make no sense, super callous, and speeds through lectures. She's an animal psychologist for a reason.
Honestly, she is rude and assignments are not clear. I wouldn't recommend taking her. There are so many other Psych professors that are better instructors than this one. Avoid if you can, the professor is a bad communicator and tough grader. Youtube does a better job at teaching me.
The only hw we had was the 17 chapter quizzes which were fine but her tests are over all confusing and she didnt teach well
Dr. Alliger's teaching style is great. She's informative, and obviously cares about the subject she's teaching. She doesn't give homework! The textbook was free! But she also complains about her rate my professor score in an effort to get us to feel bad for her. She's a psych teacher, she knows how manipulative that is. It irked me. -1 point
Spring 2020. (Please feature me on your next presentation, Dr. Alliger.) She's got a tough persona and acts serious. Uses clear examples that are funny/memorable. On the first day, she gave an emphatic speech on believing in yourself that stuck with me. Great open book quizzes. Straightforward tests. Says smart people get what they need (so ask qs)
She doesn't care to clarify for her students, she will yell at students if they ask a question and if another student tries to help it's even more yelling. Your grade is made up of quizzes which are pretty easy but the exams are the most confusing and stressful exams ever. She made me hate psych. Take literally anyone else but her.
Solid professor, she has the reputation of a hard ass but she's a great teacher. Test format is diverse to help different kind of test takers. 10 page paper is required but you have all the time in the world it start/Finish it. Lectures/ slides are crucial, missing one chapter will put you behind but it's not difficult to catch up.
Lecture heavy course but Dr. Alliger always helps students understand the content. Always asks questions when confused and stay on top of reading over slides before exams and youll pass.
If you love your life, and your GPA, do not take this professor. She is not caring, very snarky, and shows little to no compassion for her students. Tests are weighed heavy, confusing for no reason, and just horrible. Do not take her if you really enjoy Psychology or want an easy grade.
This is my second time retaking this class and this semester I chose Alliger. She recomended a couple things and they helped me this semester. She actually wants you to pass. Psych 250 is a hard class overall but she makes it managable. Take it from someone who failed this class before. She tries her best on the lectures too
she gives good feedback just go to her office hours or email her. she let me redo a few assignments. anyone that wants to fix their grade, she will do her best to help you
Gives good feedback, I dont know why theres reviews on here saying she doesnt. She helped me fix my Grade. Grateful for her commitment to me during office hours. Not an easy subject but I recommend her. Most likely getting a B this semester and Im juggling 5 other classes. Youll be fine just go to her office hours and ask for recommendations
you can tell she is a very caring professor, especially if she sees that you care about your grade. if she sees you are trying, she will work with you!
I heard that she wasnt a good professor to take for an online class but in person shes great! she sat down with me and went over mistakes ive made. i think youll be great as long as you have her in person! gives good feedback and tips
She is accessible outside of class, she will give you great feedback. Take advantage of her office hours if they fit in your sched. I was struggling a little as I work full time but Im telling you if she sees you are trying, you will pass. Getting a B after messing up a few assignments. Not a bad grade for a class most ppl fail
She's straight-foward about what she wants and cares about your grades. I recommend going to her office hours, if she see's you're desperate/struggling she will try to help you. Its not an easy class but i had a good experience with her. Highly recommend
This is my second time retaking this class but thankfully I took her this semester. As someone who failed this class online previously, obviously 250 is not an easy class. She made the subject less confusing to me and I learned better with her teaching style. shes very passionate about it so you will learn! Answers emails kinda fast so thats a plus
I think she gives good feedback which is really something you need in a class like this. when i messed up on the first few assignments, her feedback helped me avoid those mistakes later on in the semester. i dont have a probllem with her, shes very nice. not sure why there were any negative reviews in the past. my class enjoyed her this semester
FOR PSYCH 225 DONT TAKE PROFESSOR ALLIGER! I REPEAT! SHE IS VERY RUDE! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING SOMEONE ELSE FOR PSYCH 248 AND PSYCH 225! SHE IS EXTREMELY SNARKY AND THINKS SHES FUNNY WHEN SHE IS NOT! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING TO SOMEONE ELSE!! FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR GRADE! (OH SHE TEACHES 250 SO HOPE AND PRAY YOU DON'T COME ACROSS HER!)
If you want to learn a lot, work hard, and actually care about the field of Statistics and Psychology, then enroll in her classes. She is a highly dedicated professor and will help you immensely if you reach out and show an interest in learning. Definitely one of the best Psych/Stats professors I've had so far.
I had Professor Alliger for 3 psych courses and didn't regret a thing. She is probably the most passionate about statistics (she wrote the department textbook for God's sake), and that's why her lectures are so intriguing. She gives great feedback and her tests are not very hard if you review the slides and textbook!
She has fake nice personality, behind you she's a diff person. After meeting on video conference and asking, she promised me she'd regrade my 3rd exam but never did it. I let her know how hard I studied for that exam and tht I knew the info and felt confident in my ansr's. She dsnt let u see ur tst, she has fredm to put whtvr grde, if she hates u.
Ripped up a students formula sheet during exam, in front on 150+ students because there was writing on it. She will make you rethink ur life choices and kill the fun in learning.
When focused on class content, she effectively covers a CH of the TB in each class and she does helpful reviews bf exams. When she steers away/gets distracted, she is unpredictable. Quick to claim misconduct or defensive or negative (where not needed). Rd the TB, test yourself with HW(often due bf lec)+BB Qs(opt). Go to lec to reinforce the TB rd.
I like psychology but even 5/6 chapters in 1 test is too much for me. Her lectures are fun with videos and she gives good examples. She has the same energy as my mom, always shouting, always loud (kind of scary too). I think I gained 10 years of age just by attending this class, dunno if that is a good thing or not.
She is not a good teacher, so goes on tangents during her lectures and stuffs her tests filled with too much material. You can study as much as you want, but it feels like she randomly picks grades for her students' tests.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She makes you memorize 5 or 6 chapters of 70-80 slides for each exam. The exams make no sense at all, no matter how hard you study you will fail. According to her, 70% of the class is failing and we only have 1 month left of the semester, she is very rude and does not care about students, she will just tell you to "study harder".
i took her fall 2022, dont listen to the bad reviews, she's a concise n passionate lecturer. she does read off slides meaning all you need for an A+ is to study the slides which is what i did. almost everyone who complains doesnt actually study or pay attention and just needs someone to blame. they are immature and have no accountability.
a LOT of material to memorize but very reasonable if u show up to lectures and review slides (i promise its worth it). her lectures r informative and i have no issues w her, but u will have a hard time if u dont set aside time to study so be ready to do that!!! a lot of her class fails but i wouldnt say its her fault since its possible to do well
she only reads off the slides so might as well not go to class. she admitted that 70% of the class is failing and in turn said to someone to just "study harder." clearly if so many students are failing it has to be on her. she doesnt give exams back so you cant even study what you got wrong. i have been self studying.
She's an okay professor tbh, but she all she really does is read off the slides during lectures and doesn't provide any support really. You are probably on your own for her class and it's test heavy even though she drops the lowest grade of the four exams. Personally, her tests aren't really fair like some of the questions don't even make sense.
you're better off staying at home and self studying since all she does is read off the slides. grade is mostly based on 3 exams and then the final but majority of the class is failing. it sucks that she can be a bad teacher and we're the ones suffering for it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! She will give literally no reviews for the exams and you can't even ask what type of questions will be on it or she'll tell you to look at the slides. 75% of your grade is your exams and you have to study six chapters of 50 slides for these exams. Not worth it, don't know why she's still teaching, stick to animals.
all the other psych professors let the students use open note on all the test. mad annoying get a life smh.
just reads slides in the psych class, and there are no review sheets or extra credit chances. It's hard to study because there's a lot to learn, I just wish she curved exams cause more than half the class failed her class
Her lectures aren't very helpful, she mostly reads off from slides which you can do in your own time. There are three midterms and finals with credit questions on BB and PSYCH study credits you need if you're 18+ to pass this class. Review the credit questions and slides, and the online textbook that she gives on BB, they were helpful.
do not listen to the 5 stars. shes gonna pull up our bad rate my prof scores and say she doesnt care and don't listen to us. run while you can!!! she didnt curve at all even though more than half the class was failing. you might as well stay home and self teach, you are better off that way
She does't give students tests back. We have 3 exams, and 1 final. I 100% get not being able to give the final back, as that is the last exam, but the regular exams?? How are we supposed to learn if we don't know what mistake we made, what the correct answer was. I just don't get it. I guess she's too lazy to re-make exams for every semester.
I saw someone say she doesn't know how to teach and to stick to animals, I 100% vouch for that, WORST "PROFESSOR" EVER, STRAIGHT UP FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL. Please do yourselves and favor and try to avoid her, all those good reviews are made by her fake account, do not fall for it!!!!!!
Save yourselves!!
A couple tears fell out my face because of this class. WASTE OF MY TIME!
It is VERY test heavy even though it's multiple choice. The exams will make up your grade. There are too many slides to memorize. You are teaching yourself most of the time. The exams don't even make sense, even if you do study, the questions on the exam are random and hardly reflects the lectures with a bunch of random scenarios.
being present in her class in pointless. she just reads from the slides and does not further explain them. there is SO MUCH material to learn in such little of time and you need to know EVERYTHING on those 50-70+ slides during lecture in order to pass those test. YOU MUST STUDY ALL THE TIME in order to pass this class. She will not help you or care
Dr. Alliger is one of the best professor I've ever had! Extremely intelligent and has complete command of the content in classes. Always making sure that she has answered all of our questions before moving on to the other topic. I finished the semester super motivated and inspired by her knowledge and the passion she has for what she teaching us.
All she does is read off of slides that are 50 slides long. It's a waste of time just sitting and listening to her lecture. If you take this class beware, you have to teach yourself. All the exams are multiple choice questions and SHE NEVER GIVES THE TESTS BACK!!!! It's because of her most of the class wasn't doing well. Waste of time.
Dr. Alliger is an amazing professor who taught the material well. She was very flexible and understanding when it came to assignments. I recommend her.
Would not take again
Awful, just awful. Stay away.
DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. SAVE YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!
Class very easy, just study.
I never went to a single lecture and still got an A in the course. The answers to her exams are all on her slides that she puts up. doesn't take attendance due to the size of the class. 75% exams and 25% online quizzes that you can take as many times as you want due at the end of the semester
Ignore most of these reviews with negative ratings with no substance. Amber is honestly one of the best professors I've had at hunter by miles. She's very clearly passionate about psychology and teaching students, and her class is pretty straightforward with easy tests and homework. Highly recommend!
I don't know what's up with students and why they are this crucial, but for me, professor Alliger is just amazing! She is unique and intelligent, and she cares for her students! If you respect her, she will respect you back. I learned a lot from her lectures, and I can tell! She is a way too knowledgeable professor at Hunter! Thanks to her :)
Really good teacher, she always stops and asks if people have questions. Helps students understand concepts rather than just memorization. Tests are very slideshow and lecture heavy.
Tough class, but Unstuck AI really helped with study prep. Lots of slides to memorize, but the professor is passionate. Give it your best shot.
BE PEPARE TO LEARN! This class grade is break into Lab + HW + EXAM. EXAM worth 50% of the grade, in person, on paper. Around 30-40 questions (concepts + terms + statistics). Tests are hard, you have study. She lectures aren't enough to cover what she test on us, she offer multiple tutoring sessions. Try to attend. It's helpful.
* Presented material in an approachable way * Encouraged engagement and asking questions * Homework is due before the lecture, so use the textbook and the extra videos she gives you * Funny and warm * Grading and exams are fair and transparent --> if you correctly challenge how something is graded, she will change the grade
if you can take psych 348 with alliger take it! the class is super fun and she's a great person to have on hand when ur not sure about tutoring and stuff. she also gives awesome advice regarding CVs and life
I took this class because I really love teaching so I thought becoming a tutor would allow me to experiment in that field. Professor Alliger is great and she treats her tutors with respect and care. She is a mama bear and doesn't play about her tutors. Definitely recommend this class!
She makes the material easy to understand. Amazing professor that actually wants to teach! It is hard not to get a good grade with all the help offered in her class.
Caring, funny, passionate. I was in her summer class, it was intense but so interesting! She really cares about what she teaches, fair on grading, welcomes students to ask questions during or after the class. She's also very patient with students whose native language is not english. I have learnt so much in her class, and would love to take more!
Not a nice environment. During tests it feels like a work camp. She and her student aids patrol the class. I've seen her rip people's tests out there hands. Not saying they are in the right but just very bad atmosphere feels like you can get yelled at at any moment. Says if not all work is shown it's a 0 on hw. No simplified steps or a 0. Not cool
Tutoring for her was an amazing experience. She cares very much about her students and what she teaches. No exams, and you get to do a lot of fun things as a tutor! This class was much easier than 248 for me. Can't recommend enough!
Guys I warn you dont take this class. This professor will make you do so so much work and you will barely have time in your life anymore I barely remember I have a friends. She wants you to suffer. whatever you do dont take this class dont do it. she wants you to fail. trust me. dont do it whatever you do dont do it. she is bad very very bad
She will tell you at the beginning of the semester not to believe her rate my professor comments. She's clearly not in this for her students…I've never spent hours on homework assignments to receive a grade of zero. Extremely unfair. This is my second degree at Hunter College, my 256th credit I've taken here. She is the worst professor I've had
I was one of the students that read the reviews and was afraid to take her class… don't be. Yes the class is intense with homework, labs, and exams, but she always wants what's best for her students! Her tutors are also amazing, definitely helped me with all my homework and any other questions I had. As long as you put the effort, you'll be fine.
