Class is interesting and professor is very good at what she does. i always felt that i was smarter than her in philosophy not about what the philosophers were saying but in understanding the philosophy of life. im sure shes going to read this and complain about a student about hers who thought he was smarter than her. BUT SHES A GREAT TEACHER
Awesome teacher...if you get into the class it makes you think about life and the people around you...
A life changing class!Katherine is the best Philosophy teacher you can find in the world. Her class is enthuistic and fun. There are 7-8 debate that made philosophy alive. Go to office hour she will help you. There are only 2 exams and many extra-credit to help you get an A. It's amazing class and a professor to make philsophy as a passion for everyone!
Excellent teacher! Enthusiastic and unjaded. Extremely fair in her grading
Honestly has to be one of the best professors you will ever have the chance to learn from. She makes lectures exciting, and teaches with enthusiasms, and passion. Her grades are fair the only complaint I can think of is how she doesn't round grades. An 89% is still a B. Other than that small detail she is an amazing teacher I recommend her highly.
The best class I've had so far at SMC. Took her in the Winter; difficult workload for 6 weeks, but the material is fascinating. Learned A LOT. She is helpful, nice and caring. A fair grader. Make sure you attend class and do the readings. A bit heavy on the environmentalism, but overlookable. Overall, highly recommended.
BEST Professor Ive had at smc! Extremely funny, makes the class enjoyable! The material is enlightening. Wish I had taken her for a longer semester. DO NOT FALL BEHIND ON READINGS!
Amber is a killer professor and an all around kind person. Do the reading and the work and you will love this class. It was a great start to my college career
What the heck my comment got deleted! I'll write another one since this teacher is so incredible... I had absolutely no interest in Philosophy prior to this class, and now it is my favorite subject due to this teacher. Class was canceled one time last week, and I almost burned the building down. That should be a sufficient description.
Dr. Katherine is an absolutely outstanding professor who, unlike many in her field, cares a great deal for her students and their progress in her class. Make no mistake, you will work hard. You must show up for class & stay for the duration, do the work and participate. She is quite accessible and so willing to help. In a word, she's great!
VERRRRRY HARD.
I didn't know what I got myself into... at first I was frightened at the work load but in the end it pays off. You learn to find yourself as a person during this class, it's not boring whatsoever, she's clear, always passionate about the topic, motivational, I loved this class and will always remember it. If you're lazy don't bother though.
Her modern philosophy class was really insightful, and while the class was a bit challenging at times (including a few of the philosophers/ideas), it was ultimately worth it. I wasn't certain of the sources and solutions to many of the world's problems. Now I feel I have a FAR greater understanding and can act on it,and help the world more.PHIL4FTW
dont take her class unless u love speaking! it's easy, but u learnt nothing. boring class.
Pretty cool class. Chill and laid back professor. She's passionate and knowledgeable. There is an environmental spin on things, which I found interesting. Not the easiest class, but not terribly hard. Bad attendance will eat your score quickly. Study guides are free points. Gives extra credit opportunities. Thought-provoking.
I've taken 2 classes from Amber, one of the best teachers I've ever had in SMC, not only is her class interesting, She has an awesome way to deliver the materials, she's funny witty and cool. If you need extra help she will always help you during office hours
Amber is the kind of professors that teaches you so much about life and pushes you to think about the things you claim to believe. She's one of the best professors I've had, because she makes you learn how to think for yourself and question your beliefs. Don't skip any classes, and do all the assignments and you'll have no problems getting an A.
im not gonna sugar coat it-this class is A LOT OF WORK! you have one quiz and one assignment every week. you MUST do all the readings and you MUST show up to every class bcz she takes off points if you miss. shes nice as a person and helpful. read ur debate once and you'll Do fine. i took scholars but same as regular. got an A but worked HARD!!!!!!
Professor Katherine's class was AWESOME! I learned sooo much. We engaged in fascinating debates, her lectures were thought provoking. She promotes free thinking and inspires you to go the extra 100 miles and to make a difference. Her class is intense, but you will learn more than you ever imagined! It's the radical dead poet society type of class!
Amber was such a great professor. Lectures got boring very few times because she adds some spice to everything and make sure to participate and read the textbook! Overall pretty easy class over the summer where i enjoyed going to class everyday. Definitely take any of her classes!
Katherine's class is a MUST for any student wishing to have a great time, get REAL constructive criticism, and open their mind enough to question the foundations of their knowledge. She uses her honesty and openness as a tool to instruct and guide her students, which offers a truly unique learning experience. TAKE THE CLASS!
Took this class over summer so there were quizzes, homework assignments, and a few one page papers. Attendance is mandatory and reading is crucial. Always do assignments and speak once in a while and you will get an A. At first she comes off as strict, but she's really nice. Her grading is a little inconsistent but it was a good class.
If you are looking for an easy A to fulfill your requirements, or if you are interested in our environmental problems, this class is for you. If you are interested in philosophy that has nothing to do with contemporary environmental problems, you might get bored to death and want to look up another professor. It's up to you. Easy A for sure though.
Took this class over summer and it was alright. The readings assigned are confusing and hard to understand, I would use sparknotes. You must do the readings because there is almost always a quiz. If you do the readings and make an effort in class and on the essays you'll receive a good grade. Make an effort and you'll be fine!
Great teacher, dropped the class because it turned out I didn't need it however still showed up just because I thought it was interesting and the professor was just interesting to listen too. Great atmosphere, thoroughly enjoyed the class, sure there are quite a bit of quizzes but they couldn't be easier. Overall one the of the best professors.
Prof. Kathrine is very clear. She makes some rather difficult material understandable. Thoroughly enjoyed the class. Readings and mandatory study questions are difficult, but rewarding. She does dominate the class and unfortunately leaves very little time for discussion--it's mostly about her lecture. Productive office hours sessions.
Awesome professor, you earn your grade and get what you put in. Recommend to anyone.
First of all, this class has helped me to open my eyes to see reality in different point of views. It has assisted me to think about life in my own perspectives. However, I do not recommend this class with this professor, who can be described in one word, 'RUDE' Hope she doesn't think I am the one who has problem.
Good but Strict Professor. A lot of work and assignments. A fair amount of Extra Credit assignments are given. Attend Sustainable Works and you should be able to get an A. The class is not easy but with a good amount of effort an A is obtainable.
This is the best professor I've ever had! Rate my professor wasnt around when I first took her class. the quality of learning you get in her class in unmatched by any professor I have had after her. I highly recommend her!
Class calls for A LOT of reading that can be hard to understand and confusing, but when you get in class she makes it perfectly clear. This is a hard class and you have to work your ass off to get an A, but she is one of the best professors at SMC and you'll be hooked on philosophy within the first month. Attendance is mandatory.
Attendence is crucial. She offers 50 points extra credit for sustainable works which will boost your grade to an A so do it. Quizes are all True False and she goes over before hand. She's an easy grader on essays.
Amber is an energetic and effective teacher. She's very frank and good at answering questions, and her class is a lot of fun. The class consists of mostly reading, writing, and short multiple choice quizzes to keep you on top of your reading; a very good overview of the basics of philosophy.
Fall 2011, I was taking Math 54, Speech 1 and Phil 1. I was living the dream. Katherine is amazing teacher. You will have to do work to pass the class. I ended up getting 89.5% she does not curve grades. Although I didn't get an A. I still love and respect her dearly. She is a very sweet lady with a good heart. All the best and good luck.
Great teacher. All you need to do is to read the book and use your imagination to write the essays.
AWESOME teacher. Class was really interesting. Her sense of humor really made the class fun also. There are true/false quizzes everyday, but we're extremely easy, if you read the book. 5 assignment papers, 4 debate papers, and a final essay(instead of exam.) All in all, couldn't ask for a better professor or class. Take her!
She really did teach me so much this past semester (to not be a coward, to be proud of my beliefs and most importantly to NOT write for the teacher, because we would never learn anything about ourselves if we did that) to Amber: PLEASE DON'T EVER LOSE YOUR PASSION OR SENSE OF HUMOR because we need people like you to show the others how it's done.
Materials are intense but as long as you work on them, you'll do fine. A really GREAT professor. Very interesting class. I have a new perspective on my life after taking this course. You'll definitely learn something too! Highly recommended.
This is like no other class you'll take. We sat in a sharing circle all semester, and we used the texts/readings to work on ourselves. Not only will you learn a lot, but you will also work on yourself and your own philosophies. Just go to class and do your homework. She's really funny and helpful. No Mid Term or Final, just papers about YOU.
Professor Katherine is amazing. Her Philosophy 4 class offers a very therapeutic and fun way of relating modern philosophy to your life. Although there is a lot of homework, there are no quizzes, tests, or finals. She is extremely helpful and is very quick to respond to emails. As long as you are diligent and punctual you will love this class!
Katherine is truly one of the best professors at SMC and makes all the material extremely interesting! Very fair grader with a lot of extra credit opportunities. She is also very helpful if you attend her office hours. Loved this class, definitely recommended!
She's literally the best teacher I've ever had. She's interested in making people think. I learned so much. She makes you work though. You have to do all the reading and be present in class.
BEST TEACHER EVER! Really fantastic material and a lot of fun. Each class is fresh and interesting, she really knows how to get you into the world of "old dead white men". She was always willing to debate almost any point and it was fun to watch her call kids out for talking or being on their cellphone. Great teacher, must take her class.
She is a great professor! We would be so luck if we had other's professor with 20percent of her teaching talent in SMC. Plus, she is funny, but direct
BEST TEACHER EVER! not hard to get a good grade if your interested and willing to do the work. she is a really awesome teacher, who is inspiring and motivational, each class is fresh and exciting and very real. she does little to sugar coat the serious problems our world is facing. if you want to take an awesome class, take her philosophy 1.
Philo 4 is a great class to get your philo req out of the way and not have any tests, and u develop ur writing tremendously with no pressure. It is a lot of work to write all those papers but also fun. Go to her office hours it is very helpful. shes overall a great teacher and this class especially was so much fun recommend
Amber Katherine knows the course material so well that every moment in class is an effective and efficient use of everyones time. This class is interesting and challenging but there is no reason that not every person can succeed if they do the readings. This class effected my view on the nature of reality and the ethics behind it every day.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! It is NOT an easy class but you will be glad that you took it. Very good professor who is passionate about what she does.
Professor Katherine is an genuine person hence a great teacher. I recommend her to anyone who wants to learn philosophy. She makes learning about philosophy interesting/hilarious. The material however is rather difficult. Lots of reading!
Very informative teacher. She's really funny and uses great examples. Attendance is mandatory and you need to do well on the quizzes and essays as they are a huge chunk of your grade. If I had done better on the quizzes, I would've gotten an A, but I ended up with a B.
Prof. Amber is simply a great teacher, very informative, will make really you think about what you think you already know. After taking her class, I see, read and think Philosophy in whole new level. I see life so much interesting, it makes so much sence. I Definitely recommed her as a teacher.
I took this class because of the good reviews on this site, but she has changed everything in the class. She is now a terrible teacher who sells her own book for 90 dollars (which is mandatory for the class) also you cant buy the book used because you NEED the code provided. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Very good class! BUT BE WARNED!!! THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS. WEEKLY QUIZZES (2-4) ON THE READINGS UP UNTIL FINALS DATE. 4 ESSAYS. 2 EXAMS. ALWAYS READ AND ALWAYS TURN IN YOUR WORK NO MATTER WHAT!! TAKE EXTRA CREDIT FOR SURE IF YOU WANT TO SECURE A GOOD GRADE AFTER BEING A GOOD STUDENT. IF YOU ARE LAZY. DON'T EVEN BOTHER. PHILOSOPHY AIN'T EAZAY~~
She is so awesome! Hilarious, intelligent, straight to the point. I learned a lot and she got me interested in philosophy! take her!! you won't regret it.
PROFESSOR KATHERINE IS AMAZING! TRULY A TEACHER WHO WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED AND DO WELL. SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT SHE TEACHES.. BUT DONT FEAR IF YOU THINK PHILOSOPHY IS NOT YOUR SUBJECT. MODERN PHILOSOPHY REQUIRES YOU TO JUST WRITE ABOUT YOURSELF. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT ABOUT YOURSELF IN THIS CLASS AND SHE'S NOT A TOUGH GRADER. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
She puts so much effort in an elementary philosophy class and tries her best to have some, at least a little, impact on the students's. It's really inspiring. Tests are easy, T or F. Essays are not as easy. Reading assignments and open book quizzes come with every class. Write extra essays to get extra credits. Brand new text book required.
I really enjoyed your class, learning on the different views of how many of the past came with their ways of thinking. A+ in my book. But be warned just keep up with reading or else your gonna get lost. Turn in all work or else your screwed
I've been a student at SMC for three years now and this has been by far, the best course I've ever taken -- absolutely mind blowing. BEWARE: This is not an "easy-A" class. You've gotta work for your grade & keep up with all assignments. But mark my words, it's SO worth it. You'll finish feeling totally satisfied that you actually learned something.
Amber is one of the most passionate teachers at SMC. Her PHILO 1 class isn't the easiest, but it's not too hard you just have to work and think a bit on your essays. She also provides plenty of extra credit opportunities. All in all, take her class if you're interested in learning because you WILL learn something from her.
This class grew on me. Amber is very nice , funny &genuinely cares about her students and the material. No tests or quizzes and no text book--all the books are online! Just 4 papers, a collage, and a 1 pg homework assignment. It get's tedious towards the end but an A is easy to get!! Takes attendance almost every day and counts towards your grade.
She is not afraid to show the realities that are going on in the world. Even if you're not a Philosophy/Psych major, you WILL learn a lot. Highly recommended, the class is very intriguing and makes you think. Textbook is a MUST.
I can sat that this was very unique class. It is pretty boring and uninteresting at first, but you just have to hang on and after half all the fun starts. Pr. Katherine may seems rude at first, but after closer look she is very kind and really caring about everyone who is paying attention. Lots of writing, no final, just paper(about you).
BEST TEACHER EVER! REALLY PUSHES YOU OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE. YOU LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT YOURSELF IN THIS CLASS, I KNOW I DID. FOR ONCE... I FOUND PHILOSOPHY INTERESTING BECAUSE SHE MAKES IT SO RELATABLE. 4 PAPERS, 1 COLLAGE, DAILY ASSIGNMENTS. best class ever!! take her, and an A is very very attainable.
Definitely my favorite professor so far. Amber brings life and humor to a stale topic making you want to actually listen and participate. Do the readings and show up everyday and you'll definitely get no lower than a B in this class
If you do all the work and don't miss any classes, you'll get a B for sure. To get an A, be ready to go for her office hours a lot to revise your papers, speak out in class (read your papers) and do extra credit work. A lot of reading, assignments are due every class (one page essay, single spacing). Take this class if you have lots of free time.
My favorite Professor so far! Professor Katherine makes the lecture painless and intriguing. I always looked forward to her class. If you love to debate, this class seals the deal; if not, don't fear as she doesn't demand anyone to step forward. Be sure to take her if possible!
She is an amazing person.
Amber Katherine opened my eyes to a new horizon, she challenges you in a good way. I got an A in her class, It was pretty easy. She's interesting and funny and just AMAZING in every way. If you want her to like you, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! Her office hours are really cool and you learn a lot during them.
Amber is an amazing professor. Funny, enthusiastic, makes the class so interesting and fun to be in. Although the material is difficult to understand, I looked forward to her class and loved being there. Great learning environment. She really opens your eyes and does so well. Focus more on what she's saying than her notes!
Best prof I've had yet. She's hilarious, informative, and truly changed my outlook on the world/philosophy. I entered the class with only a slight interest and now I want to take as many philosophy classes possible! She's a rational if not easy grader. It's very easy to get an A in her class.
She inspired me in so many different ways! The material is very challenging but she knows her stuff. I highly recommend you take this class if you have the opportunity!
You need to buy the textbook/access code. Although she doesn't like to be proven wrong, is a little harsh on essays, and is rightfully skeptical of Scholars students, she's very open to others' ideas and tries her best to be compassionate. The quizzes can be a bit tricky but the tests are pretty easy. Gives a lot of ec opportunities.I liked her :)
She was honestly the best teacher I have had so far! She keeps you interested, explains things clearly, not afraid to speak her mind, and you will look forward to her class. Tests are open book (even the midterm/final), essays for me were the most challenging required much thought. A few online quizzes per week, they help. Take her class!
This class is SO much work - expect to have a paper due every class - but it is absolutely worth it. Amber is amazing at helping you develop a sense of purpose and understanding about yourself. Be prepared to critically question everything! It's unlike any other class you'll take at SMC and throughout college. Go to Office hours!
TAKE THIS CLASS. (If you're willing to put in some effort and actually learn something). Very helpful, lots of quizzes that are kind of hard. exams are easier and open book. gives EC opportunities. knowledgeable professor and compelling class. Take it!! makes philosophy fun :)
Amazing human being! Take this class, whether you're interested in philos or fulfilling IGETC requirements. Dr. Amber's lectures are crazy interesting... Winter session: online quizzes everyday (be prepared to read read read), 2 debate papers, 4 film reflections, and 3 open-book exams. Managed to get an A while taking a second class. TAKE HER!!
This class is a must. This is one of those life-changing classes that you leave taking a piece with you. She sets up her class brilliantly, instead of taking it personally if you missed class/an assignment you would just lose a few points allowing you to prioritize. Wrote a few papers but the movies we had to base them off of were very interesting
This class is work, but it is one of the best classes I have ever taken in my life. She is an amazing professor and person. Her lectures are always so interesting and I look forward to every class. Take her!! I highly recommend her :)
Opens your eyes to the environmental destruction of fueling Capitalism and the extinction of biodiversity due to the careless actions of human consumption. Reduce carbon footprint and protect your community with green solutions, breathe better live better, highly recommended class Amber is the best!
You're going to have to buy a brand new textbook w the online code, but this teacher is worth it. Tests are very easy and straight forward, amber encourages you to explore and learn on your own, but she will challenge you. I am so grateful i got the opportunity to spend philo 1 with her. and she offers tons of extra credit. take her if you can!
FAVORITE professor. She is invested and gives all the help that you seek, if you are interested in philosophy, go to her office hours. Very interesting, funny, helpful, caring, and a great teacher. She is the reason I survived my first year of college and I am excited to take more classes with her.
This class is by far my favorite class I have taken. She makes Philosophy fun and easy to learn, while dually relating each lesson to the current diminishing state of the Earth. I learned about things way past just philosophy. You have a 1-page single-spaced essay due after every unit & consistent quizzes. It is extremely interesting and enriching.
This class was very interesting, she's a very dynamic and entertaining lecturer. It sometimes felt more like a class in ecology than philosophy. Too strict, we were not allowed to use computers to take notes and we were not allowed to record the lectures. We are adults and are responsible for our actions if we surf the web during class.
One of the best college teachers I've had so far. Really draws your interests to the class topics.
Awesome professor with amazing method of teaching. Free atmosphere of sharing papers. She is helpful, clear and confident with the materials she teaches. It was the best college experience I have ever had. Go to her office hours and enjoy learning! do not worry about your grades as long as you are putting work and effort on your papers.
I cannot be thankful enough for a most cathartic and life-changing semester! She been a monumental inspiration to my life not just academically but also personally. I have adapted various changes in the way I live and think and can only be indebted to her passion-filled guidance. It was a great honor and immense privilege.
Catherine Amber is an amazing professor who cares about her students and really insures that the full range of philosophy is understood by her students. I was a vegetarian years ago and her class transformed me into a vegetarian again, after watching a movie. Her class changed me in many respects and I am grateful to her for her eloquence.
Katherine is some kind of SMC superstar. It's impossible to go a week without overhearing one student tell another "Take Amber Katherine, she's amazing." The rumors are true: Amber Katherine is amazing. At the very least, take her class because you're bound to run into someone else who has and it makes for great conversation.
Amber is one of the most inspirational teachers I have ever had. She really cares about Philosophy and how it is relevant to living a good and moral life. The lectures are exciting and engaging. She makes you work for your grade, but if you show up and do the work, you will come out of the class with a different outlook on life.
Great teacher, makes you look at thing from diffrent prespectives and allows you to think for your self even though she might have a diffrent feeling than you.
Professor Katherine's philosophy class taught me a lot for such a short semester. She did her best to make sure that her young students could relate to what she was saying and was really passionate about her teaching. Her tests are very easy if you just read and understand the readings. Showing up is important, and you'll get points for it too!
I have taken philos 1 & 4 with Amber, and she is without a doubt the best professor I have had, and most likely the best professor I will ever have. Few people have inspired me like she has, and what I gained from her teachings continue to inform my decisions both academically and in my personal life. It is an honor to have been a student of hers!
Really good professor. She is very funny and makes her class really fun. She also really cares about her students doing well.
GREAT TEACHER!!! Like everyone else already said. TAKE HER! I learned a lot about myself, the environment and philosophy. Many quizzes but they are good because they prepare you for the exam!
This is my 2nd class with this professor and I have one thing to say: Lecturing GENIUS. She is truly a gifted professor. She challenges you to think for yourself while simultaneously creating a safe & trusting class atmosphere. This class changed my life & I will never forget what I learned. You learn so much about yourself and the world around you
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!! Wish the semester didn't end so quick. She is truly the best!!!!!
Class was amazing and fun. A lot of people recommend her class because she is really great with the students.
This was the best class I took at SMC!
Hands down, best professor on campus.
She's a great teacher. This class is a must for everyone. There were many assignments so only take the class if you have the time to write two essays a week and like to write. You get the A if you do the work.
I LOVE AMBER!!!!! I took her class last sem at smc, and fell in love. she reminded me why i'm a philosophy major. even with my classes at uni, i still retained the teachings. I wish she could be my professor for every class. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is entertaining and very knowledgeable. You will have to read a lot, but it's easy material. Online quizzes are an easy A. Tests are open book, but you will need to have read and highlighted the important stuff to have time to look it up if you don't know answers.
Considering Amber Katherine as your professor? You have found the one! Amber cares about making a change in the world, and she will give you the tools to do so as well! Amber is present, and fun with the material! You will learn about yourself in this class by clearly defining your values, & philosophy! Change your life by taking this course!!
You write a full page of words every day! Very easy professor to get an A but can get annoying by doing a paper every day. In class, she really tries to bond with her students through lectures. You define your philosophy throughout the course. It's a challenge to understand what's going on at times but overall guaranteed A, unless you dnt do work.
This class change my life! It has opened my eyes about so many subjects, change my beliefs and let me become a really better person. Take this class for YOURSELF, it will help you for life! Amber is so funny and inspirational, while I was going to lectures I was feeling like going to a TV show,so fun! 60p extra credits do it and you will get a A!
Amber Katherine is a really good lecturer that really holds your interest. The content of the course is really interesting as well and i would definitely take this class. P.S The professor is a fair grader so expect to do your share of the work
I'd highly recommend this course to anyone contemplating the pursuit of any philosophical or environmental major. It is also a good class to take for an insight of the different values and perspectives in our society; it guides you to choose your values and decide what to do with them in order to have a contribution to the world we live in.
It's work, but good work. The material is satisfying and will make you smarter. She divides the reading precisely, so if you keep up with the reading, you will do fine, but the minute you miss readings, it is dominos from there. You need to be a good reader and a writer. It is Philosophy and English major heaven, hell for the everyone else.
I was super excited to take this class, but the class was more about her Ecosexual club than environmental ethics. Everything you learn about environmental ethics is from the book, which is a little hard to understand. Sometimes the class would turn into an ecosexual club meeting. Amber was really awesome though, better off taking her for phil.
She's fantastic.
It's a good class once you get past her personality, which is very in-your-face. She tries to antagonize students to make them think about the subjects in this class. She really is teaching this class for the students so that they can establish an independent thought process and ethical code, rather than just teaching for the GE credits.
Professor Katherine is the best professor I have had yet at SMC. She is so inspirational the the work she does is so important. Her class discussions keep you fully engaged. She is so passionate about the subjects she teaches I was enthralled with her lectures. The way she structured Philosophy 1 was in a way that made so much sense to me. Take her
do not expect an easy A, you will get back what you put into it. if you actually pay attention and get with the program, you may come out of this class feeling like your mind has outgrown your skulls space capacity and might just explode. talk about knowledge and reality. this class will open your eyes. shes very bold ull either hate it or love it.
Shes sensational. I went into the class eager to learn Philosophy but had zero background in the subject before this course. She gives you the freedom to express who you are through every writing assignment. Her focus is making you leave her class a better person, thinker, and life-student than when you entered.. that's what meant the most to me!
MUST TAKE HER CLASS. Must have an open mind and not see life black and white or else this class is not for you. Her lectures are amazing and inspirational. She tells you how it is and want YOU to think for yourself! Her grading criteria is very clear and she is a fair grader with essay papers. (Only One page) Be prepared to read. Do not fall behind
She will change your life! Trust me you will start to question all the tihngs you were told throughout your life. This was one of those classes where I was actually looking forward to attending.
She likes to go about Amber or Professor, not Professor Katherine. She gives a good amount of extra credit. Be ready to read, as the quizzes are based on the book. The tests are based on the quizzes and lectures. I remember doing about 3 essays in her class. She is not a tough grader.
Class is centered on the environment. She lectures about ways to help the environment but makes you feel pretty guilty about it. She's extremely funny and helpful if you have any questions! Do all the readings and take notes in class and you'll get an A.
My first class that I took with Professor Amber was Philos 1. Before her Philosophy 1 class, I knew nothing about Philos. Professor Amber inspired me to take Env Philos 20, taking the Philos portion. I loved how she was able to make our environmental class into a community. Her 3 essays were based on real life issues. 2 exams, just read the book!
She is a really skillful teacher. Very interesting lectures, and she doesn't want you to just tell you what you think she wants to hear in papers or in class. But her essay criteria is so harsh. She herself said that a 75% is considered good by her standards. You have to buy a new textbook that she wrote to take online quizzes. but she offers EC
Amber is a good person, and passionate teacher. She has a very strong personality which can detract from the learning experience at times, but when directed positively makes for lively and entertaining lectures and discussions. Difficult grader on the essays, and would recommend getting feedback during office hours if you want to do well.
Overall the class wasn't bad. Took her last fall. 4 tests and 4 essays. Quizzes are easy. Shes a tough grader when it comes to essays. Overall shes a nice teacher. It Was an enjoyable class. Do the extra credit!!! Made a mistake not doing it and it costed me a B in the class.
The debates are really fun if you participate. Passionate teacher. She recently changed her testing method by focusing it more in lectures rather than quizzes, which in my opinion is unfair because she does not go over all the notes, which it brought the average grade of the class down a lot. If you are willing to read A LOT, you can get an A. EC!!
Amber is awesome. One of the best professors I've had. She's hilarious and makes the lectures interesting. Definitely a tough grader on the essays. Never gotten below an 85% on an essay in college. On all the essays in her class I've scored an 80%. Test are easy if you study the quizzes and literally pay attention to everything she says.
I took this as a scholars class. She grades hard on papers, and that's coming from a person who does well on essays! She hates it when you "write for the professor" she demands persuasiveness in essays. She was a little too much for me sometimes, I wish that her power points were uploaded on ecompanion so that we could review them for the tests.
Amber is a spectacular person, but her teaching method tends to get unorganized. If you like genuine, enthusiastic professors, take any of her classes. The quizzes are found online, but the tests and essays are NOT EASY. This isn't a class to fall asleep in, it's a class to take notes. The more you participate the better the class is. DO THE E.C.!
Prof Katherine was one of my harder teachers but also one of the best. Really wants to teach you the material but sometimes feels like she's forcing her opinion on you. Super hard essay grader but take it to her office hours and she will help you get the A. DO EXTRA CREDIT - it bumped me up 5%. Take detailed notes because it'll be on the test.
Great philosopher and interesting person. Horrible teacher. She jumps from one topic to another, impossible to follow. After three weeks into the course I gave up on listening to her because it's impossible to understand anything she is saying. Just had to do all the research on your own in order to understand something. Quizzes are super hard.
Attendance is mandatory for participation grade, and necessary for understanding the material. The class is heavily dependent on the assigned readings and videos, on which there is a one-page paper due each meeting. The lecture covers the materials more thoroughly and discussion is highly encouraged among peers. Amber wants you to think.
Great professor! Funny and engaging. Out of all the stuff she covers it's hard to know what is going to be on the exams. Here's a tip; memorize the main points about each philosopher from the lecture notes and memorize MAIN quiz questions that highlight what the philosopher believes in.
Took her for Winter 2017, Great Professor, Super funny - definitely recommend.
Amber is full of passion and enthusiasm of what she teaches! Do the readings and extra credit, you will get a really good grade in the end. She is willing to help students out with their essays. Nice professor! I really recommend everyone to take her class. You will not regret.
Prof. Katherine cares about people and the world as a whole. Although winter session wasn't her favorite period to teach, she will open your eyes to how the world really is and make you think for yourself. Take advantage of the extra credit and be prepared to learn something about your own philosophy; Her class is an easy A!
fantastic teacher. passionate about her job. fun to discuss current events with. will open your mind. if you are a true student, she will truly teach you. I love this teacher.
Dr. Katherine is one of the most inspirational and informative people you will ever encounter in your life. Lectures are super interesting and easy to follow and she allows everyone to ask questions. She related all the material to important real life events that you need to know. You will miss out hugely if you leave SMC without taking her class.
Professor Amber is the best! She is super chill and literally the best Philo Professor At SMC. She makes you write a full paper everyday to bring in every morning to class. Sometimes she makes people share. A couple big papers and the final is big as well. Easy class as long as you are ahead of the class and spend some time (less than 3 hours a wk!
To all the up coming Philosopher. This class is highly recommended. Lots of extra credit but you do have to work for it. Answers for the Quizzes are in the text book. Write as an artist and have the mind of debating throughout her essays. You will get an A. For exams just study the quizzes and the lecture notes.
The readings, debates, and ambers passion for her work have made this class inspirational and changed my perspective on our world. She has office hours and responds to emails fast. Amber forces you to pick a side in the debate, teaching decisiveness and noncontradiction. She's engaging, witty and you get the grade you work for. Highly recommend
Professor Katherine is hands down the best professor I have ever had. She's one of the few that actually teach you something. Her lectures are crystal clear and she has a great sense of humor. She's generous enough to offer extra credit, but you still have to earn your A. If you're planning to cheat or slack off, don't even bother taking this class
Professor Katherine's lectures were great. Such an intelligent and funny individual who tells it as it is. 4 exams and 4 papers that should be easy only if lectures are attended and notes are read. You get what you put in.
Professor Katherine has a way of making the complex world of philosophy accessible and easy to understand. Although I found her personality to be a bit intimidating and harsh, I do think she is a good professor who really know her stuff and let's you know exactly what she expects from you.
Professor Katherine is a great professor. She will make you choose a side on a debate/ essay. There are 4 essays & 4 exams in total & offers lots of extra credit. Read the assigned readings & the quizzes will be easy.
PASSIONTA WELL EDUCATED
She left me in the middle of a conversation during office hour i got A she denied my request for a letter thanks for teaching that education is more than writing a book
passionate about her subject yet she is the most impolite and rudest person .atacked me when i read my paper she "said" i didn't deserve an A she was just tired to read it.
It is not recommended to enroll in her class for international students.
Study Class Notes and quizes. Tests are multiple choice. You have to write the essays as if you're are getting ready for a debate paper. If it's all explanation, you will fail. Don't explain, but having a mind of debating towards the opponent side when you write. It's simple. You still have to do your best!
She will blow your mind in the all the ways you are least expecting. I am forever grateful for both classes I took with her. Hands down the most rewarding investment I made during my time at SMC. If you want to know about true success and start to work toward it- take this class, you will not regret it.
Try to find another philosophy teacher. overall, too many papers, get ready to write many papers. Good luck.
Professor Katherine is an amazing individual. She truly cares about her students and wants them to form their own opinions. You WILL have to put time and effort into the essays and tests, as they make up a large portion of your grade. If you're ready to put in the work, she will give you a priceless learning experience. Take the class.
I took this class without expecting to enjoy or understand the material. The lectures and films are vital to understanding the course. I would have had a much harder time if I didn't apply myself and do all the assigned work and quizzes. The grades are not given away, but she does want you to understand and succeed. 4 required essays assigned.
Amazing! The most inspiring class I've ever taken. Highly recommend, Professor Katherine is phenomenal. I decided I want to be a philos major after taking her class. She's a nice grader; no midterm/ final, 4 non-cumulative essays and exams. The exams are tricky, mult choice. She'll teach u to be the be the best debater ever! Interesting lectures!
I am about to graduate from UCLA with a degree in Philosophy, and Amber Katherine has been the absolute best philosophy professor I've had to date. She teaches you how to critically engage with great thinkers and fully realize the potential of your own thought, while encouraging and supporting all viewpoints under a critical gaze.
She has something wrong with her brain; She is not going to reply back to your emails or if you any questions. The chair department needs to control her. very rude and offensively impolite
I did not think highly of Philosophy at the start of my time at SMC. Professor Katherine changed that. Her method of engaging students is amazing, especially if you come into the class with an open mind. Her PHIL I class is an amazing way to knock out an IGETC requirement, and her Philosophy 4 class is an amazing way to learn who -you- are.
Overall Very Rude teacher, you can't have any other ideas, just what she says is true. Awefull. she is the worst pro at SMC so far.
Honestly a really great teacher, not only is she challenging but she also forces you to think outside the box and outside your comfort zone to think more analytically as well as critically. Take advantage of her office hours, she gets to know you on a personal level and honestly really helps you when it comes to her papers. great teacher I love her
Amber is the best professor I had at Santa Monica College. She really challenges students to find their voice and own who they are. Her debates are intellectually stimulating and exciting! Not only are her lectures fantastic, she is hilarious and I always left her class in a great mood. She is very accessible to students during her office hours.
Honestly one of the best professors I had at SMC, she truly improved my critical thinking skills. My writing improved by A LOT so yes that required a lot of reading & writing. Loved that my thoughts, opinions & perspective were challenged. Stay woke people.
Get ready to get awaken!
Best professor at SMC. Describes herself as a "butch woman", which couldn't be more accurate. Can be scary/intimidating at first, but don't let that define how you see her! She will make you think for yourself and not write essays "for the teacher". It's worth it to go to her lectures; if the readings confuse you, she'll help you understand.
Most amazing professor at SMC. Her lectures are so interesting and hilarious, you won't touch your phone for a second. She gives amazing feedback in her office hours, and you can spend hours just talking to her. If you do the readings you'll pass the exams, and the essays actually made me think and made me a better writer.
So I took 3 classes with Professor Katherine back when I was at SMC. I'm at UC Berkeley now and have been for a year & a half. So the fact that I came back to write this review is telling in itself. This teacher changed my life. She took debatably one of the most boring subjects, and made it the most compelling class I've ever taken. Thank u Prof!
Professor Katherine cares about your success, so she will push you to do your best in her classroom. The subject and her style of teaching complement each other very well. The exams were all true or false, so do the assigned readings beforehand and you will be fine. You will have some debates in her class, so make sure to prepare & participate!
Professor Katherine is engaging and welcoming. She is an easy grader if you have even the barest of writing skills. Lots of extra credit offered at the end of the semester. DONT BUY HER TEXTBOOK USED. You need the code to access the online portion, which is pretty useless and expensive. Oh well. Shes a great speaker and its a fun class.
Great professor, totally unbiased. She's fair and expects you to reach high expectations. Also hilarious
Easy class. Average reading, total of 3-4 books, plus an iclicker. The books are very short,so it's not a big deal. No tests or quizzes, just a final where you get in a group and discuss the answers for the questions. Several papers do every two weeks, analysis on chapters or films. Overall , easy A
Prof. Katherine is an amazing professor. I transfer to UC Berkeley to study Political Economy and Philosophy and I can certainly say that her class prepared me very well for the beast that are Berkeley Philosophy classes. Learn to take constructive criticism and ask her for feedback on your papers during officer hours and you'll shine.
Her exams are fairly easy as it is based entirely on the lectures and the book. She is helpful during the office hour for papers. But overall she is super rude, you will be scared to ask her even the simplest thing, she will completely disregard your question or a sarcastic ans if she isnt interstd in aswrng. Wont even make an effort in remmbrng u
She's hilarious and engaging! This class requires some reading, but a bearable amount. Her quizzes are easy if you've done the reading. You'll lose lots of points if you don't come to class often! Also, she's so down to earth, which is always nice to see in a professor.
Only 4 exams and essays with each. Online quizzes are due 30 min before class starts but they're all super easy (based on readings which are also short) Exams are 40 questions T/F. Essays are also easy because they're persuasive debates esp. after hearing other students because you understand lang to use to get point across. overall easy&funny
Such an amazing professor! Take her class!
Very inclusive in class. Reasonable assignment load, no tests or exams, lots of extra credit but talks way too much in class that you don't have lots of time for group work and assignments. Everything is online so doesn't require a lot of materials. All readings and information accessible online through canvas. Easy A but you have to work for it.
No tests!! You do have a series of assigned readings, but I didn't actually read any of them and I did fine because she explains everything in class. Phil7 was experimental this year, so it's definitely only going to get better. You'll learn a lot! Excellent professor! Has lots of extra credit, but you won't need it. Hates "reports for the teacher"
Professor Amber is such a great professor! She gives so much extra credit and wants you to succeed in class. Make sure to do all of the work.
She cares about you actually learning and you won't get good grades on your papers/online comments if your ideas aren't original or well thought out. She does make it easy for you to gain extra credit. 4 major papers. You do need to buy a couple of books, but none over $15. You gain points by participating in class w/ a clicker. Overall decent.
Prof. Katherine is awesome. You need to work for an A- show up, take notes, readings, quizzes, and films, but, SO WORTH IT. She's incredibly intelligent and hilarious. This class built my debating abilities, critical thinking, skepticism, and ecological awareness. A class for people who really want to evolve as earthlings and thinkers. TAKE.
Best professor ive had at smc so far! She does a great job of making real life connections to the material covered in class, and she really lets students voice her opinion. I would highly recommend professor katherine!!
If you like to be bombarded with emails, this is the right professor for you. The class was all over the place. A lot of reading but not getting credited for. I became lost in the objective of the class and it became uncomfortable because how it was facilitated. Good readings, ok professor.
Professor Katherine is probably one of the most inspirational professors at SMC. She cares about others success. Furthermore, the readings were intriguing and eye opening. She gives LOTS of extra credit, make sure you do it to receive the grade that you are looking for.
Took her for Fall 2018. Great prof. Doesn't tell you why you got the grade you received for essays, so it was hard to improve upon them. I learned that to get a 90 on the essays, you need to write more creatively rather than follow the rubric. Lectures are very interesting and thought-provoking. Her demeanor keeps you listening in on her lectures.
The class was very inspiring . Her lectures are very interesting. This is an eye opening class , her teaching technique is great . A lot of reading and writing assignments , but its worth it . When she speaks, everyone listens . She is definitely not the sweet and nice type. May come out as too straight forward , but thats the whole point .
Dr. Katherine is the best professor at SMC hands down! Having transferred to UCLA I can't express how much of the knowledge and ways of thinking has helped me excel at UCLA. Take advantage of her office hours and get the most out of this class as you can because it will greatly help you in life and later down in other classes.
Best combination: great professor and easy grader. However, she acknowledges those who do the readings and can think for themselves. Definitely take her for any of her philosophy courses. She lets you know her sociopolitical perspective and makes you question your beliefs and values. If you want feedback visit her office hours. Buy book w/ code.
What an amazing professor. Her enthusiasm about course material matches her enthusiasm for every individual student's success! Go to office hours to hear deep, meaningful discussion. Bathe in the joyous occasion of attending her Philos 7 critical thinking class be ready to grow as a writer, thinker and learner. She is awesome.
Professor Katherine is a Professor who really engages with her class! The class environment is warm, and she really tries to make it fun. This is not an easy A though, be ready to write at least 1200 words per week. The challenge was definitely staying on top of the homework. Once you get that down you'll be fine. Great professor!
Professor Amber is one of the best professors at Santa Monica. She truly wants everyone in her class to do well and succeed. She encourages discussions and creates a safe space to do so. Her knowledge of philosophy is impressive and will make you have a greater appreciation for philosophical thought. Take her class! You won't be disappointed.
I just took the class for the winter semester and ended with an A. She gives a lot of extra credit. 4 test + 4 essays and participation make up your grade. As long as you show up and do your work (including the extra credit) you have a good chance at getting an A. I almost dropped the course in the beginning, but stuck with it and ended with a 94%
I've taken both Philosophy 1 and 7 with her. I have to say I liked her Philos 1 class more, but I got an A in both classes. You've got to read, think, and apply yourself in order to get a good grade but if you engage with the class and take advantage of office hours you'll really benefit from it. Get ready to hear a LOT of her political opinions.
Prof. K is a well-versed, well-spoken, & extremely wise educator. Not to mention a kind & wonderful human. She is passionate about what she teaches, and cares about her students, and their success in this course. She's one of SMC's absolute finest. The workload in Philos1 is fairly heavy, but all the material is captivating and worthwhile.
Professor Amber is one of the best! Her lectures are amazing and she cares about her students.
I took this class without realizing that there was an environmental spin on it. Professor is nice but her late grading policy is crappy. I felt she wasn't too empathetic and pushed the classwork on us despite what was going on in the world. Said that protesting is better with a college degree in hand. Not the best way to approach a systemic issue.
Amber genuinely cares not just about her students but what she is teaching. You will leave her class with not only knowledge on philosophy, but stronger critical thinking and writing skills. There are several essays in the class, but Amber grades and teaches in such a forward and clear way there is no confusion. She offers 50 pts extra credit max!
All I can say is if you want to expand your thinking, she's the one!
Took Ambers Philosophy 7 course this summer. Given it being a 17 week course crammed into 6 weeks, the pace was challenging. All that aside, if you do the work and pay attention, you will get an A. Fair grader and an outstanding professor. Absolutely recommend taking a course with this professor.
Professor Katherine is incredible. Knowledgeable, reasonable, kind- incredibly smart. such a good experience.
This professor is very straight forward with what she wants with you as far as assignment you take weekly quizzes on the book which are truly super easy since its true or false and the exams are also true or false questions. Show up to class, do all the assignments to the best of your ability and should pass
This woman is the worst professor I have ever had in college. She spews incoherent nonsense every time she opens her mouth. Her "knowledge" of philosophy is a joke. If you are a student who studies science, you will be gritting your teeth and wasting your time taking this class. She spews absolute nonsense.
Best Professor at SMC, she wants you to succeed but you have to do the work. She keeps it real and doesnt force a set of beliefs on you. Get ready to do at least 4 essays and exams. If you study and show up you should get an A or B
Yes! Take her classes! She will challenge you but will not leave you in the dark. She helps you so much and go to her office hours. The class itself is amazing and very engaging, which is saying a lot because I took her PHILO 1 via zoom. Do yourself a favor..... if you're serious about personal and academic growth, she will get you there.
The best teacher I have had so far. There are many opportunities for EC and she is so helpful. I would recommend office hours if you just want to chat or if you need help understanding any material.
I've taken 2 classes with Amber and she's the best professor I've had at SMC! Lectures make you really think about the world in new ways. Works hard to make zoom classes fun and interactive. Notes are thorough and always posted online. Go to office hours for helpful essay advice. Classmates are motivated and have great minds! Now Im a philos major!
Professor Amber is a real gem. Her class is inspiring and interesting. She's a wonderful human being altogether. Her take on philosophy is paradigm-shifting and would reframe how you see the world. Also, I would highly recommend you guys to go to her office hours -- it really helps.
Professor Katherine is truly an amazing and caring professor. I took her Philosophy 7 class. Her class is very politically based, however it ties in incredibly with the critical thinking and argumentation goals of the course. This class is work heavy, but Professor Katherine is a really nice grader and provides A LOT of support. Enjoy!
I took her during winter session and it was very challenging. Lots of reading and quizzes in a short amount of time. However, she is a very good professor and gives good feedback. Go to her office hours because it will help a lot. You will leave this class filled with knowledge.
solid choice! there is a lot of reading but you could get by skimming. go to office hours so she knows you better. sometimes lectures can get heavy. short quizzes before every class based on reading and weekly discussion posts (which can get tedious). However, she is very passionate and knowledgeable and its an enjoyable class. Final is w/ a group
An unparalleled professor worthy of tremendous respect. From day one I was enraptured for the class, using the Matrix as an introduction to philosophy, second to none. She defines Philosophy as a series of rational arguments about what is Real, True, and Right. Brilliant, precise, informed, Amber is THE Philosophy human rights activist we all need.
I took the winter semester of PHILOS 1. Definitely the best online course I've taken. At first I thought that having our cameras on was annoying but it actually made it worth it. People asked questions and interacted with each other way more than they would've without cams. She is great at hearing people's opinions and giving feedback.
I LOVE Dr. Katherine. She's extremely kind, open minded and really makes you think. I loved taking her class but it was SO hard to get an A. I had to write 7 extra essays for ec. I would take her again however I don't want to go through it again. 4 term papers but you will not get A without doing ALL extra credit tough grader, makes you work hard!!
I took her course during the winter which was a fast-paced class and the material of the course is heavy, but she really took her time to explain the material. She would respond to any concerns/questions about the material. I recommend you to take advantage of the extra credit she provides along with office hours.
I took Professor Katherine's Philosophy 1 course and I will absolutely take classes with her again. Her class was very engaging and pushed me to critically think further about some interesting topics. If you want an A in this class, be prepared to go the extra mile.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken, but you learn so much from her class and she gives awesome lectures and really engaging.
Makes you work for it but if you're willing to participate this is going to be an awesome class. Don't take this class if you just want to do work and not participate
Very passionate about philosophy, invests lots of energy with her lectures. You can BS your way through some assignments but you'll have to watch multiple two-hour lectures to succeed on the main assignments. She also offers easy extra credit throughout the semester.
Class is an easy A, graded almost entirely from 4 true/false tests and 4 essays (1 for each section of the class). She tries to connect every lecture to climate change which felt irrelevant and detracted from the class IMO. Take asynchronous if you can to avoid her weird in-class participation system.
Amber is possibly the best professor I've ever had. A real gem of SMC, her carefully-curated curriculum is truly comprehensive and enriching. I found myself in awe of her genuine passion for the material. Taking Philosophy 1 during the summer term was demanding, but so worthwhile. If you're up for a challenge, Amber would be my top recommendation.
I took this class during the pandemic, Professor Amber honesty gave me something to look forward to during these challenging times. She made class enjoyable, and sometimes I wish they were longer because her lecture was that good. This class made me think about life entirely differently and gave me a different perspective. TAKE HER
I first started Philosophy with the mindset that I would just be learning about the meaning of life. However, this class was much more than that. I learned about philosophers from many eras and what they believed in and taught. It is safe to say this was one of the greatest classes of my entire academic career. This was also my first college class.
My favorite professor thus far! I took this summer course in 6 weeks. The lectures were very entertaining and she has the best personality. She truly wants her students to succeed. If you follow the essay criteria exactly, pay attention, and use her lecture notes to study for exams and essays, you will get an A. She offers lots of extra credit too.
This was a super experience to gain exposure in philosophy over the summer. Professor Katherine is outstanding at demonstrating philosophical approach to debate through lecture , video and excerpt reading . The course was challenging and very rewarding, highly recommended.
Very fun lectures
I think she cares about her students, but this class is A LOT of reading. I'm sure it's nothing compared to other universities, but I felt overwhelmed taking this class. She challenges your critical thinking skills, so if you are looking for an easy philosophy class, this is not it.
She's funny and you can tell she's passionate about the subject she teaches. Her lectures are informative and fun. However, the workload is pretty heavy with multiple weekly readings and quizzes. Multiple essays. She allows you to use the notes during exams which makes things easier. Lots of extra credit assignments, which is great.
I feel I owe a debt to Professor Katherine! Taking her class uncovered a great love for Philosophy. She guides students in an overview of great minds, while also expressing her individual beliefs. She respects individual students right to their own opinions, and encourages us to form our own beliefs. I am now pursuing my own degree in philosophy!
Showing up to the zoom lectures is important. Watching the recorded lectures really helps you for the tests and the essays. There's a lot of quizzes which is your homework but really helps you understand the criteria! She's a very clear grader and provides a lot of extra credit. She also provides office hours which is helpful.
Very nice and approachable. Don't procrastinate on quizzes and do them ahead of time. Make sure you plan out time to study for exams and and work on essays.
Her humor and positive support are undeniable and apparent. She has honestly been perhaps the best professor I've encountered so far in all the classes I've taken. She remains true to her character while allowing the space to think for yourself and having an open perspective to allow yourself to develop your own thoughts or opinion of the content.
If you have a chance to take Professor Katherine for any of her philosophy classes, take her! Her lectures are engaging, she sends out her lecture notes, most of the exams are based on the notes. There are 4 debate essays, 4 exams & quizzes. Get into the class discussions and you will do well. She's awesome and I hope to take her again for Phil 7!
Watching her lectures, her personality doesn't seem bad, but this is not an easy g.e. If you're looking for an easy one don't take her. There are 12 essays (8 are optional). If u get B's on the other 4 and you want an A you need to do those other 8. You also have to buy her book and there's soooo much reading.
The greatest professor I have had the privilege of learning from. I took her Philo 1 class over the summer and her Philo 4 class in the fall. I had no idea what philosophy was really about until her class and I left with such vast knowledge. I wish I could take her class again as she truly is passionate about what she teaches and she is so funny.
Her personality made her lectures unbearable for me Required textbook is her own book which is just basically compiled excerpts with online test access for $100. All essays all the time. Insane reading workload with videos and movies to watch. Didn't do any of that and just winged it and scraped by with an A If you can bs well you will be fine
Amber is a great professor; this class is absolutely the best one I've taken so far. She makes you work your a** off, but it's super worth it. I learned so much about so many things; I'm really grateful. However, don't take it if you want an easy A.
Professor Katherine is committed to making the planet a better place and it shows through her teaching. She definitely wants students to engage with the material and search for answers both in themselves and the world. But she is very fair and supportive of all her students. Go to office hours for help, guidance, or just a good conversation!
I took Professor Katherine's asynchronous Philosophy 1 and really enjoyed it. The material is really interesting. There is a lot of reading to do, but Professor Katherine's lectures make everything easy to understand. She really wants her students to succeed and is very fair.
I took her class during the winter as an online course but loved every moment of it. The class was a lot of reading but filled with very interesting content. I also enjoyed her personality and I'm glad I took this class with her but only regret not taking it during the spring or fall. She offered extra credit through papers on movies she assigns.
Great teacher! She combines philosophy with real issues (environment). She made her class interesting and was lenient on grading. The class mostly consists of four exams and four argumentative essays. You do have to put in effort but not too much. You will learn in this class.
If you take this class be prepared for a civics based semester full of heated political discussions and an overwhelming amount of assigned reading. Professor did not cultivate a welcoming environment and was overly critical towards students. Classmates often had to step in and defend eachother due to the professors lack of respect towards students.
Amber facilitates a critical thinking environment where students are encouraged to challenge claims using the readings she assigns. She supports her students using the critical thinking she facilitates, all while grounded in compassion. She teaches skills necessary, not just for citizenship, but for a strong thinking individual. Take!
I took Professor Katherine for PHIL 1 and I personally would never take her class nor philosophy ever. There's a quiz (open-book) once a week, discussion work, have to write 900-word essays for 4 units, and and 4 exams which are also open-book. She's very passive aggressive and judgmental when you don't know something or wrote something incorrect.
This professor was amazing. The beginning we had a lot of work, but after it really slows down. This class was very simple but participation is what mattered the most. Most of our assignments were based on our own opinion.
My experience in Professor Katherine's class was incredibly eye-opening and made me think in ways I never had. She gives a lot of extra credit and is very clear on assignment prompts. She also teaches with so much enthusiasm. A great professor! The only complaint I have is that she has a clear political bias and can make it obvious during lectures.
Do not take this class. Amber is grossly bias. You will need to purchase a brand new copy of her 70 dollar textbook (written by her) in order to complete the course. I spent two days writing her essay and my friend quillbotted her textbook chapter in 30 minutes and got an A. She's an irrational teacher who cannot separate her bias from her grading
Professor Katherine is amazing. The course load is mini quizzes once a week which is fairly easy, class which is mandatory but no need for heavy participation, but intense essays. There are tons of extra credit opportunities, not to mention she is very accessible through email, make sure to go to office hours if your struggling, so helpful!
I took Professor Katherine's online Introductory Philosophy course in the fall of 2022 and overall had a good experience. Lots of reading and lectures, and the essays are very challenging. Her political bias is evident sometimes, but she does her best to remain unbiased and provide both sides of the argument. All in all, she is a very good teacher.
Literally AMAZING!! If I could have her for all my classes I would. Her class is demanding but you really learn to enjoy them. She incites students to do their best and honestly it's not difficult to put in the extra work when the lectures are so engaging. However, you MUST put in the time.
'Greening' philosophy was worth every lecture as it utilizes established philosopher's argument, and applies ethics to our current culture's paradigm. Each of the 4 units have core focusses surrounding relating and comparing philosophers. Amber Katherine provides all the materials to succeed, and presents readings in class for comprehension.
Professor Amber Katherine cares deeply for the material she teaches in Philosophy. Her energy is infectious, which keeps students engaged and interested. Philosophy 7 was a pleasure to take with her; it was a study-heavy class if one wanted to get a high grade, but it was completely worth it. The things I learned in her class will stay with me!
Fantastic teacher & class! Prof. Katherine's lectures are thought-provoking and seem designed to get you to question the status quo, so I didn't perceive her as biased. She cares about her students and is passionate about the subject. You'll become a better writer if you're willing to work at it. Take advantage of office hours and extra credit.
I am warning all of you to not take this class!! This class was meant to be flexible meaning can do it whenever you have time before the end of the class. She gives 2-hour quizzes that she said should only take 1 hour and give you only 1 hour. I had to drop the class because resulted in me dropping the class because of her lack of teaching. AWFUL!
I would recommend Professor Katherine to anyone that is willing to work and enjoys being challenged to think. Professor Katherine pushes students to listen, reflect, and examine the topic from all sides. I enjoyed every aspect of her approach.
Katherine is a great professor to take for Philo 1 she is very good at explaining philosophy and relating it to current situations in the world making the course material easy to understand and interesting to study.
She really cares about your grade and does everything she can to make the answers to upcoming exams OBVIOUS. Reading quizzes as HW are easy. Exams are spoon-fed. Be willing to challenge your belief systems or you will struggle. The most engaging teacher. Pay attention during lectures and you'll do just fine. If you're new to college, take her.
I loved my PHILOS 1 class with Amber Katherine. She is clearly very passionate not just about philosophy, but about education and thinking for yourself. She is able to translate some ancient ramblings into practical information that you can actually understand. I wish she taught all philosophy courses so I could have her for every class.
Professor Katherine is a lovely teacher. She obviously care so much about teaching, and puts effort into the lectures to make them interesting, and even funny. There was on average 3 readings/quizzes every week which was a lot of work, and the exams were tough, but if you pay attention to the lectures its not too hard. Highly recommend.
She was amazing. Very clear and interesting lectures. Attend class - it'll be easy to fall behind if you don't put in the effort.
Do yourself the favor of taking this class by Amber, she is an amazing teacher and cares deeply about her students. If you put the work in, you will undoubtedly get an A, and she is super fair when it comes to grades. I learned so much about myself from this class, and it better prepared me to be an active citizen.
might be bias bc I had a family emergency that put me behind in all my courses and she was the only professor not willing to accomadate. I know it's not her obligation, just a human decency thing. textbook is a drag and difficult to grasp. The content just wasn't clicking so if u aren't good at philosophy ALREADY it'll be difficult for u to learn.
Don't have any issue with her character or how she decides to teach her class, but she is very lecture heavy and doesn't help accommodate at all if you have any thing happen in your personal life. The 3 hours/ weekly label for her online class is mislabeled, expect closer to 10-12 hours for a chance at passing.
Her class can be a bit challenging. You must really focus during her lectures to really understand the material and do well on the short essays, exams and quizzes. She post the lectures online so you can re-watch them, which I highly recommend!!! Overall she's amazing!!! I would take her again ! Truly inspiring & really cares about your growth! BR
Passionate, knowledgable, accommodating, gets to know each student personally, and so on.
Professor Katherine is everything you would want in an educator. She is extremely knowledgeable, passionate and cares about each of her students. I disagree with the review that says you need to go in knowing philosophy. I definitely struggled a lot at first. Just study and ask questions if you care about understanding the material and your grade
Great professor - very helpful and passionate
She's a great teacher, she's very very well educated and passionate about philosophy. I think she really cares about her students and wants you to succeed, but her deadlines are very rigid. She offers quite a bit of extra credit (or at least she did for my semester) which gives me the impression that as long as you try, you will succeed!
She is absolutely a supportive and understanding teacher. She always replies to emails very quickly , and i can confidently say she is one of the best teacher in SMC.
She is absolutely an excellent teacher!
Professor Katherine's class is challenging but rewarding. Her lectures are engaging, and she provides great resources to succeed. Unstuckstudy AI and the textbook were super helpful for study prep.
Professor Amber truly cares about her students. This is not an easy class, but if you do the work, participate in lectures, you will see that she is literally giving you the tools to succeed in the class. She tries to make the lectures fun and if you seek help, you will get it. I really enjoyed this class.
She is just one of those professors that takes the job way too seriously. Quite literally every student in there is just there for the general ed requirement, but she grades and takes up time like she's an English class. Loads of reading, and she expects you to watch all of her lectures that are like 25-35min each. She lied about grading as well!!!
she is honestly a really good teacher, shes clear and to the point but theres a lot of homework and a lot of quizzes but there untimed and open book. you pretty much understand most of her teaching.
Professor takes her job way too seriously. She makes you read a ton of pages and she makes you watch her 30 minutes to 1 hr lecture. She makes you do a whole dissertation for discussion posts and expects too much on her free response questions on exams. Plus she makes you pay for a 80 dollar book. Like the other review says, she does too much.
Don't really understand the ratings saying she "takes her job too seriously"?... She a teacher lol, and a great one at that. If you don't want to be a real college student and don't want to do any work then don't take this class. There is a lot of work and the class is kind of a lifestyle, but overall it was pretty fun and the work wasn't that hard
Probably my favorite class I've taken this semester. There is quite a bit of work (3 days out of the week you have something due), but it's interesting and Amber makes it fun. Her views and stances on most topics are very clear, but she is respectful, receptive to critic, and wants to make sure that everyone has an equal voice. Love her!
Great professor. Not an easy course even as a Philosophy major. Her exams will keep you on your toes for sure but if you put in some effort to reach out and ask for assistance she will be quick to do so. Would take again great course.
While she has a lot of read-along quizzes every week she truly is the best professor I've ever had. I took Professor Katherine's class in spring and she truly brings out the critical thinking in the class. Throughout this class I was able to grow a lot and form my own opinions rather than rely on others. This class is so worth it to take.
Great course! It's challenging, but not overwhelming which I think some professors get mixed up with. Professor Katherine gives up to 40 points of extra credit, has online office hours, and gives really helpful feedback on assignments.
Extremely tedious and tough grader. She asks questions to be answered in a certain way, and if you don't answer the question how she anticipated she'll just give you zero points on the section. Everything is based around her lectures and cannot be searched up. Very tedious class over all, would not take again to get the requirement done.
Mrs. Amber is one of the most caring and informative professors I have had. I like to say her class is partly a lifestyle than a class because of the community she has helped us built throughout the semester. We have a few quizes and discussions a week but we have all the information to complete them for full credit. She genuinely cares.
I loved this professor. Although she assigns a lot of work, they're not too time consuming and relatively easy (at home open-note true or false quizzes, personal responses to readings/videos) Amber is caring & supportive of the students and makes her class engaging with discussions and short lectures. Absolutely loved her class, would take again!!
This course is pretty demanding reading wise but I think that would be expected with any professor for this subject. Good professor clearly knowledgeable. Fair exams but strict grading, watching the lectures is gonna be most beneficial.
Messed up the first test as I had no idea how to approach it, but once I went to a zoom session to clarify what she wanted they became pretty straightforward. There are mandatory quizzes that you can only take through buying a ~$50 or so textbook that count for like 10% of the grade. Put them on a calendar and she drops 2 of the lowest quizzes.
I took her online philosophy course and there are a lot of lectures and quizzes but honestly, it's very manageable. She has the course very structured and organized, which helps TONS!! Take her she's great!
This professor was so understanding and kind to one another she helped me when I was struggling and understood when I couldn't make it to class, please take her course I highly recommend it.
Genuinely learned a lot, which you can't say often. Quite a few quizzes, but they're online open note and guide you through short assigned texts. Midterm essay and final essay were easy to understand and tons of guidance is given. Professor is super easy to reach out to, answers questions and emails. Ton of extra cred opportunities. Great class.
This professor was so kind and understanding, she helped me when I was struggling with one of her assignments and gave me advice on how to take it on. She understands when you can't make it to class as long as you send her a message. other than that her work is easy and understandable. I love her class and I would highly recommend it.
Take this class, It's very easy and only "hard" assignments are the discussion questions and unit exams which are both easy to do with the notes she uploads for you to use.
You can tell she cares about philosophy, and defiantly pushes you to do your best. If you want to come to class to learn about critical thinking this is defiantly a must. I personally enjoyed the class she does have ALOT of homework and assignments and it can get overwhelming but if you are willing to put in the work you will succeed.
10/10! Professor Katherine is passionate about the material, incredibly learned around all things philosophy, and an engaged lecturer (even over Zoom). You'll get what you give to this class--I highly recommend attending office hours. Few people did during my class so there was ample opportunity to clear up confusions.
be committed. take time for this class. It's worth working hard while you have the opportunity to learn about important matter that will stay with you for life.
She's hilarious, down to earth and very understanding. She's clearly got a great mind and is very engaging to speak with. Theres a lot of homework, due on days you'd never think of them, lots of long mc quizzes and short essay questions, really try to understand what she's telling you and practice it and you'll succeed. Oh and don't use ai.
Highly recommend! This class made me a more conscientious citizen and consumer. The workload is meaty but manageable. Take this class when you have time and energy if you can because there's a good amount of writing and reading. If you don't truly put thought into this course there's no point. Also so much extra credit! No reason to not get an A
Very fun and understanding. You will only get a bad grade if you don't try.
Amber Katherine really cares about her students and I enjoyed taking her class. I learned a lot and I wish she had more online classes! I'll miss having her as a teacher.
she's alr as a professor, we didn't have mandatory zoom classes so attendance was not necessary. not exactly reliable when it comes to communication but it was a fair class. the textbook you need is written by her, so there's no need for outside sourcing in her class + wasn't study heavy. failing her class is genuinely a choice, not hard to pass.
Amazing educator! Highly recommend taking this course!
Great professor.
there are a good amount of reading and writing assignments to keep you busy, but It's clear that she genuinely wants you to succeed. just actually make an effort and put in the work. very insightful and valuable class!
very clear instructions and good pacing through the class. there are lots of lectures and readings but as long as you do them the class work is pretty straight forward!
It was a great class. The coursework is very easy to navigate. Clear course structure. Go to office hours and pay attention to the lectures. You'll learn a lot and get a good grade.
Amber was one of the best teachers i have had at SMC. I loved her classes, always learning new and intriguing topics. I loved how the class materials and lectures were connected from our history to today's modern world. The class is pretty heavy on the work load but it is definitely worth it. She is a great teacher, caring, thoughtful and funny!
Truly an amazing professor! Please take her class you will not regret it. May be my all time favorite class. It's heavy reading and a good amount of work but it's all so interesting and she truly just wants you to succeed! Round of applause
