The way that Prof. Porter presents her lectures are very easy to understand, which was really more helpful than I can describe.
Overall a good prof. The class is interesting and she tells the stories well, but sometimes its hard to keep up because there are so many parts to these myths. She enjoys teaching the content. Tests are ideally fair. Study and you'll do well and vice versa.
She is very nice, and was interesting subject matter. Lots of memorization, but clear tests. I found the writing assignments pointless, but they were not bad overall. Good course overall.
She's an awesome teacher if you attend all the classes. But even if you do, her tests ask for minor details so instead of focusing on what happens you practically have to memorize every aspect of a story. It's a lot of material...
She is so nice and her lecture slides are easy to follow along. a lot of detail in her tests though so you need to know all of the material. genuinely interesting and so sweet! recommend this class!!!!
Amber is a good prof, although I hear she makes the course tougher than other profs do. The final was fairly difficult. If you memorize her slide shows and the stuff she says then you will be fine. Didn't use the textbook (googled most stories for further info).
Overall, Amber is a good prof. I have heard that she makes this course tougher than other profs. Her tests were fairly difficult. Although, if you memorize her slide shows and what she says then you will be fine. I didn't use the textbook for her class (googled stories to find further info instead).
Dr. Porter made her lectures entertaining by pointing out the small details that made the material a bit more comedic. Her tests were straightforward but you definitely needed to know the material. Lectures were well organized and presented at a manageable pace, she understood that notes take time and wouldn't blow through the slides. Great class
Dr. Porter's notes explain nothing and you have to write down every word she says. If she runs out of time she'll expect you to learn it on your own. She continuously allows her TA to give horrible lectures unrelated to any test content. Her final is cumulative. Feels like she wants you to fail. I will never take a course with her again.
Best class I took this semester, partly for the content, but also because Dr. Porter does an amazing job at teaching the course. She is very approachable, enthusiastic, and best of all, she is very knowledgable! Her exams are fair as long as you study properly, and she makes class like visiting a world class museum! Highly recommended!
Lectures by Dr. Porter were very interesting. Sometimes gets a bit too fast to keep up with, as you need to write down every word she says, since the PowerPoints are empty. Lectures about wars were taught by the TA - crazy paced! The midterms were fine, the final was tougher. GO TO EVERY CLASS! WRITE EVERY WORD DOWN! and you will do well.
Her lectures are fairly interesting but a bit dry at times. I enjoyed the stories she told. Writing good notes is very important as her lecture slides are pretty brief. She was very helpful 1on1 when answering questions as she explains everything thoroughly. Textbook readings were VERY dry and unhelpful. Midterms weren't bad but had a harder final.
Overall a fine Prof, hard to keep up with her though. Lectures are super dry and she speaks quietly. Not helpful when note taking is essential in the class as the powerpoint is fairly vague. If you're interested in GRST this is a fair class if you put the effort into it. Not an easy A by any means.
Poor communication skills, arrogance and her overall lack of respect towards the people who are ultimately paying her salary. Every lecture is delivered with such haste and apathy that you cant help but feel she has something far more interesting she would rather to be doing.
Porter is an amazing prof, her lectures are very interesting and she explains everything very well. You need to attend lectures to pass, to get all the information you need, but you won't mind since her lectures are so entertaining!
Great class, I recommend taking it if you have the slightest interest in Greek myths. Lectures are long but the material is interesting. Textbook is not necessary if you go to every lecture and write down every word she says because power points are fairly useless. You will definitely get an A+ if you never miss a lecture as tests are fairly easy.
very knowledgable
She is a great prof, really passionate about what she's teaching. Definitely not an easy A, lecture is mandatory as her powerpoints are vague. They can get long - but if you're interested in greek myth then it's a fun class! Very helpful in her offie hours and after class as well. :)
Took this class as an easy GPA booster, however I struggled in it. Midterms weren't bad - multiple choice had lots of details to memorize and the written response had a specific grading criteria that was pretty difficult. If you're into Greek mythology take this class but if you don't want to spend hours memorizing Greek names and stories then dont
Good class to increase GPA fairly easy if you like the topic attended class and review notes no reason not to get an A
Simply the most amazing prof I've had this whole semester and honestly she is amazing. She is extremely enthusiastic and hilarious, and accessible outside of class. If she taught all of my classes, I would've definitely passed all of them. Overall, you're gonna love her classes, and all of her exams on based on stuff taught during lectures.
Dr. Porter was an amazing professor that really cares about her students! She can talk a bit fast but as long as you show up, take notes and study appropriately, you will be fine. Honestly was one of the easiest classes in my degree but you still have to study as there is a lot of content. Her test are pretty fair and the class is really fun :)
Show up to class, she will talk about the powerpoints which will be the main part of the test. Very good prof.
She talks pretty fast. I didn't really enjoy her class.
There's a written component for all the exams (midterm and final) so she would take forever to give our marks back and it was just horrible in general.
She lovers her job there is no doubt about it. Her enthusiasm is contagious and makes you respect what you're learning. The comments about taking forever to get back THE ONE TINY written assignment is true, however keep in mind she has two lectures of 400+ kids so be patient. Sick class great prof
Dr Porter was a great prof to have. She was very lecture heavy, but the use of an interactive medium for studying as well as quick responses to emails made doing well in the class very easy. She was funny and clear. Highly recommend.
Be ready to read the textbook, but it coincides with lecture material and the plays are super funny. Learn lots about Greek and Roman mythology. Midterms are very fair and easy to understand questions; no tricks. Assignments are easy and fun to do. I didn't know anything about Greek mythology before taking this course and learned lots.
Never went in expecting an easy A, but never expected the prof to take text book readings to the extreme. She gives an unreasonable amount of readings to do for EVERY topic/lecture for an ELECTIVE class and tests on insignificant details from the textbook. Her teaching style is all about quantity/cramming and not quality.
Very kind and respectable, charming and overall a great prof, she teaches with enthusiasm and tests very fair
A highly respectable individual with apprehension of substantial amounts of mythological and historical information. She elaborates on her knowledge to educate students with enthusiasm which made the lectures very intriguing. However, do expect quite a lot of readings as the tests will be heavily based on them.
Amber is extremely passionate about Greek & Roman studies; however, she likes to spend a lot of time talking about irrelevant topics which forces you to learn a lot on your own. Also, she is not at all timely with marking. Be prepared to read the whole textbook start to finish.
Dr. Porter was such a great professor and super interesting! As long as you go to class and take detailed notes, you're gonna pass with an A. The assignments were marked very easily and if you needed any help with it, Dr. Porter was accessible. The textbook is definitely not necessary if you attend her lectures.
An amazing prof! Her lectures are fun when she is also interested in the topic but if not they are just normal lectures. You honestly don't really need the textbook. Pay attention in class and write down what she says, and then just be aware of the stories she didn't explain in class and read up on those. It's a lot of memorization so be prepared!
Most of the info on exams comes from her talking during lecture so good note taking is essential. A pretty easy course and generous marking on the written assignments. In class Final (Non-cumulative)
This teacher is an angel. She is so passionate about what she teaches and that makes it easy to learn. I personally don't think the textbook is mandatory, if you attend class and take good notes of what she is saying, you'll do very well.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE AMBER. She was so enthusiastic about the material and she pretty much sums up the textbook for you in her lectures. Shes so passionate and if you need help she replies to emails quickly and with great detail. 10/10 would recommend.
Great professor - engaging, passionate about the subject, knowledgeable. Beware - you HAVE TO go to class or get notes from someone else. But if you go to class / do the readings, it's quite easy.
Dr. Porter made the class so interesting. She is very enthusiastic about the material and her lectures are super engaging. She posts her notes on D2L but you need to come to class to get the full details. If you attend lectures and do the readings you'll do well in the class.
She is such a great professor, super knowledgeable and fair. However, you NEED to come to class. You really won't need to use a textbook, and the tests are very straightforward, but if you miss a class, you miss a huge chunk of information. She posts slides, but they are outlines- she gives you the info in class.
Honestly she's passionate about the subject. However, the only way you can pass this course is to attend each lecture as her 'notes' are brief slides with little detail. I can assure you that if you do not pay attention 90% of the time, you will have insufficient notes and will have to recover it from either the textbook or the internet.
she makes you learn content yourself and do quizzes before she even covers it in class.
She only posts outlines on d2l so you must go to class, she gives quizzes before teaching the material and makes the quizzes only available for a short amount of time.
I don't mind going to class and taking notes. What really bugs me is how specific the questions on the quizzes are in such a short amount of time. I like to write notes on my readings, and it takes a long time to do. When I go through the quiz even with my notes, I have to rush the last few questions. And this is BEFORE she even starts teaching.
Amber makes you pay attention. Her lectures are very boring and dry, but without paying attention a good mark would not be attained. Would not recommend this class with Amber.
Lectures weren't engaging and the textbook was so dry. She gives you reading quizzes before she covers the topic in class but the material was so heavy I didn't have the time to make sufficient notes on the readings/to read them at all. The times for quizzes are so short too. Would not recommend taking this class with her.
Porter is a great prof. Her lectures are interesting and not usually boring. Midterms and writing assignments are very easy. She doesn't put everything in the PP, talks most of the time so attending the lectures is recommended. Textbook quizzes are easy just read the textbook and take some notes. Grade booster
Amber is a great character and not a BAD prof, HOWEVER... as an elective this class was the hardest effing option you could pick. Insane amount of reading, and didn't find the lectures helpful. The exams are always incredibly specific and since there is so much information good luck narrowing it down to study. Would not recommend.
Dr. Porter is super funny and cares about her students. She makes lecture easy to follow and you are only marked on one project your lecture quizzes your two midterms (noncumulative) and a final (cumulative)
I absolutely love Dr. Porter. Her tests are fair and contrary to what others say, this is university, the classes should have a good amount of reading a hard work required-this isn't high school! If you read the textbook, take notes, show up to class, and study (you know, the basics of being a university student), than this class is a great option!
Professor Porter was a wonderful teacher, and was generally super enjoyable to be around. She was funny and kept her lectures interactive and interesting. I'm not quite sure why people are saying the class was hard, because I didn't find that at all. If did the minimal effort of keeping up with your readings and going to most lectures, it was easy
Awful, Awful, Awful, any other option is you need credits. Thank me later.
Do not take as an option. Entertaining and she obviously enjoys teaching but her tests cover way to much of the material. Study everything is not great advice when preparing for a test.
This was a difficult course for an option, but if you're interested in Greek mythology already you probably won't mind reading the textbook. Weekly quizzes worth 15% of grade, easy enough if you do the readings. Dr. Porter is very passionate about the subject and is pretty approachable if you need help
Amber is a very passionate professor. She enjoys what she teaches and is great at explaining all the little details about mythology. The only issue I had with this course is that it was much more difficult than I expected for an option course. You're going to have to either read a lot or attend all lectures if you're hoping to do well on tests.
Didn't even use the textbook, ended up with an A. Dr. Porter was funny, passionate and very approachable. The lectures were fun and there were tidbits that she emphasized on that were gonna be on the exam.
I've had Professor Porter for both GRST 205 and 209, and she's wonderful professor. Passionate about her work, but understands that this is an option course and many aren't planning to be majors in GRST. Those who are saying it's difficult course obviously put no work, because just attending the lectures and doing the readings will guarantee an A.
Amazing prof. So passionate and really cares about her students. Weekly online quizzes based off the readings from the textbook, about 50 pages each week. Only thing I didn't like about this class was that the quizzes took place before you actually learned about the topics in class. Overall would definitely take her course again.
She's a really great prof, would recommend. There were weekly quizzes that were based off the textbook, which she teaches the following week in class. But honestly, this kinda just helped me better prepare for the final since it enhanced my ability to study alone. And if you have any questions, she gets back to emails pretty quickly.
Heavily backloaded course (in spring, at least), so expect to put in significantly more time in the last weeks. Online lectures are mediocre, project is busywork but will take some time, quizzes pick on details, discussions require a good bit of time to do, and there's a fair bit of reading. The Greek textbook was good, the Roman one less so.
DOES NOT understand the meaning of we are in a pandemic. She gives us either weekly reflections or discussion posts along with a quiz which you won't pass unless you go through every single reading. I should probably mention she would host a zoom "lecture" once every two weeks and there were no pre-recorded lectures. I learned nothing from her.
Would never take her class again. Unreasonable amounts of readings and assignments given each week, did not give a fair amount of time to complete tests and expected you to remember all the information she threw at you that week in only 17 minutes. It was like she didn't consider or care about the fact that students had other classes besides hers
Weekly lengthy discussion posts or reflections. Weekly quizzes only 17 minutes. You need the textbook because she has ZERO lectures. Readings are long and boring. Grading for the weekly discussions/reflections are so picky it's hard to ace them. Wish she actually posted actual lectures instead of just assigning 50+ pages to read weekly.
This class was 98% self taught online, with no pre-recorded lectures at all. There were some zoom classes every 2-3 weeks (broad discussions ) and weekly quizzes, weekly writing assignments as well as 30-50 pages of textbook reading per week. Do NOT take this class if you are a verbal learner of if you are not extremely self-motivated.
I loved having Dr. Porter for this class. She made it fun with her little comments throwing shade at Zeus. I appreciate that there were several things that were graded so that the grade was spread out. She worked with students during lecture including changing backgrounds & adjusting mic settings. She encouraged engaging through TopHat & questions.
I think Amber did a decent job in providing resources for the class in an asynchronous setting, and having clear expectations for class work. Lots of opportunity for free marks in weekly discussions, quizzes were not hard at all. There is A LOT of reading however, and is quite disproportionate for the amount we were tested on.
This course has so much content and textbook reading which can pile up if you don't stay on top of it. Spring semester had online quizzes worth a lot which were pretty easy to get 100 on. Papers had clear grading criteria and were marked quite generously if you had the general idea. Final was long, definitely need a good grasp of content, but fair.
Very interesting lectures. But a lot to read. If you read then the course is not that hard.
Lots of reading, minor writing, and one big group project at the end. It's a nice and easy course where you have to participate via discussions with other classmates but as long as you keep up with readings you'll be fine. Even if you miss some readings you can catch up easily as Dr Porter is very lenient. Overall highly recommended
The lecture slides are extremely vague, so you have to attend every single lecture and copy word for word what she says to learn anything. The grading varies based on which TA does it, even if the content is the same. You have to memorize things she says only once in the lectures because they aren't in the slides. Midterm and final worth 30% each.
One of the best courses! Dr. Porter communicates well with inquiries, passionate about teaching. Clear exam expectations, but attendance to lectures is crucial for exam content.
GRST211 online is usually considered as the easiest course in UC but the summer one she taught instead of Lesley Bolton is just totally unfair and a disaster, I checked the difference with the textbook which she gave is a 2000pages and Bolton was about 400 pages lol. All my friend took 211 before all told me reading textbook is enough but its not.
Very nice and knowledgeable prof.
Easiest class i've ever taken. As long as you read the textbook you'll do good in the course. I spend about an hour each week on this course and have gotten an A+ on every quiz so far. Doesn't take much to succeed in this class, plus she is pretty lenient about adjusting quiz grades when the system marks them wrong.
GRST 211 with Porter in Summer 2024 was one of the easiest classes I've taken to date. Her lectures were short and easy and it was really up to you to learn on your own with the textbook. Her pick for the textbook was great and the exams were fair and easy. If there was ever an issue, she was very approachable and easy to talk to.
GRST 211 online was a breeze with Doctor Porter. Excellent textbook that made everything easy to understand, and she was very kind with giving points back on quizzes due to small errors. Accessible out of class, and just all around a lovely prof!
This class was a breeze, open book quizzes and final. You don't need to put a ton of your time or energy into this class, and Dr. Porter was nice. In my opinion this is the easiest course this university offers haha.
Easy course with prof porter, only a few tests that were all multiple choice or very easy to understand.
This class was so light, easy A! Honestly this class had little to do with the prof's teaching as you pretty much just did the work on your own lol. Online quizzes and an online final, which is great. Take this class and prof if you're looking for a GPA booster.
Slides are vague so you need to attend class, and read ALOT of readings if you want a decent grade. 35% midterm 35% final 20% assignment, weekly quizzes, AND in-class top hats for participation was just too much for a first year intro class. Theres so many details you need to remember in order to do well, would not recommend this class!
Her lectures are full of “um”s and she always seems to be breathless? Her slides have absolutely zero information unless you're copying every single thing she says. Do not take her class unless you plan on memorizing the textbook. Her questions are very specific and makes it impossible to study for.
She is a really nice understanding prof! Explains lessons well and clearly knows her stuff. Very easy to reach and never makes you feel dumb for asking questions. The workload was really tolerable and the class was honestly pretty easy as long as you have a functioning brain and eyes.
Professor Porter is a good prof but I just didn't connect to her lecture style. I felt that so much information was only found in the textbook and she didn't go over the myths in a way that made them easy to understand. Also weekly quizzes were insane. That all being said, she's very clear on expectations for the paper and all the tests!
She is an amazing professor who warns everyone first class of the semester that if you don't enjoy Greek studies and don't like memorizing lots of names this isn't the course for you. Her lectures are good except sometimes she doesn't complete them in the week. She has weekly quizzes which are super easy and the final was not cumulative.
This class was so free imo, all 5 quizzes were worth 10% each and the final was 50%. As long as you put a little bit of effort in this class, you will get a good grade.
Dr Porter made this class very fun. She directly uses the textbook and pulls a lot of the quiz/midterm/final questions from the textbook contents, so if you read the textbook you're more than fine! its also a class where you're able to just do from home, although participation matters, going to class is good! great professor!!!
easiest GPA booster
Hard class with lots of stuff and mean gradings, don't recommend to take hhhhh. Still memorable cause I met someone special for me during that class and I couldn't say anything good excepet that for this class lol
Miss Porter was good at giving feedback and being there for her students. She was genuinely caring and well respected. The course content was not overly difficult. She could possibly explain certain concepts more in detail. The only thing is that she would mix up people who participated and who didn't and mess up their grades for participation.
Amber has such a passion for Latin and genuinely cares if you do well. Definitely a course where you have to stay on top of your homework and readings, but if you're language-minded its definitely on the easier side. A lot of assignments (a quiz + homework assignment/week) but they are short and she drops your worst homework and 2 quizzes
