Excellent teacher.Very approachable and helpful. You can learn a lot from her. There are programs due every week.Be prepared to do a lot of work.Grading is fair.
Very helpful and nice. Homework is time consuming, but is by no means hard.
Really good. Very prompt to respond to questions. Lots of examples. Exams are pretty easy. Can't go wrong.
I took her for Java II and failed the midterm terribly, basically the entire class did so bad that she gave extra credit. She obviously knows the stuff like the back of her hand, but she goes fast. She's also available for questions and will respond to you.
She is VERY organized with lectures and provides examples with homework. There is alot of homework: Code Lab plus weekly quizzes and homework assignments. Homework assignments are challenging for an INTRO class. If you are planning on taking more advanced courses I would take her class.
What a GREAT teacher! She gives plenty of examples, willing to help you out as much as possible, organized, and knows how teach. Definetely the best java teacher at depaul. Take for her sure and dont be afraid to ask her questions, she will try her best to help you.
Very organized, provides great notes.Very fast paced.Felt lost many of times, but was able to grasp it after rewatching the lectures.Gave extra credit after midterm since class avg wasn't great.Final seemed easier than midterm.HW was fairly easy.Overall good prof.Just be ready to keep up w/the fast pace.Don't let yourself fall behind in this class!
As a non-programmer taking these classes I was very scared. The classes move quickly, the homework and tests are hard but she is a very fair grader. I learned a TON from her and look forward to taking future classes from her. AFter all of the hard work I received 2 A's. I would recommend her if you're deciding on a Java professor.
I am taking this class right now and she is a GREAT teacher. I have taken so many computer science courses in the past, and it is evident that she knows her stuff. As always, learning any programming language is difficult but she does a great job of teaching.
Her teaching style is not conducive to learning. SHe is too worried about people cheating that she isn't allowing the students to learn. I don't feel like I learned anything from the class I took with her. The class was too basic for her teachings, considering there was no Pre Req. Power trip/
Enjoyed class. Would definately take a class from again.
In almost 2 years in grad program still the best professor out there. Incredible way of explaining complicated concepts. Knowledge and teaching skill heads above many others. Cute too.
Excellent professor - one of the best I've had at DePaul, and I'm an economics major. Gives good, clear lectures. Extremely helpfull - she really is willing to go the extra mile and help you out. Very reachable via e-mail at nearly all times. Not necessarily the easiest prof, but fair grader. Would highly recommend.
The class grading scale had a lot of stuff in it, nothing hard but you have to come to the classes. She was always very helpful and knew her stuff.
She gives papers to do that msut be turned iin on sundays this class is very dfficult, and it sucks.. Everyday i hated simply to think about having to go the room. nIce lady but****ty class.. If you are doing it to do arts and lit loook else where half of teh class is failing the course and hated it..
This is the worse prof ever... papers on sunday... the hell is wit dat.. u learn nothing.. lots of work.. take this class if u have no life and rather do hw that makes no sence and find out shes the worse grader.. she takes "what shoud be a blow of class" way to seriously.. good luck!!!
for quizes u get a cheat sheet and can use both sides, or two single sided pages. reaction papers she is a hard grader, analysis papers she makes u do footnoting and if you dont its at least 20% off.
Great professor... Easy grading on papers, quizs, and group work. I would defintly take her for GAM 224.
I had her for two classes at the same time (Also GAM 224). Shes a pretty great teacher. The classes aren't totally boring, and she grades really easily. I liked her a lot. I would def. reccomend her to anyone.
Awesome professor... homework is very helpful, in class activities are pretty helpful, she gives a lot of extra credit, you get to bring in cheat sheets for the midterm and final but I didn't really use them... pretty easy A
Dr.Settle is a really great programming professor. Make sure to attend class; in-class activities are a pretty significant portion of your grade. Fair grader and nice person Programming itself, however, is difficult for some so they should consider this before enrolling in ANY programming course. I did my work/extra credit and was happy in the end.
Very mathematical and strict about her guidelines. This combined with her exceptional organization can make her seem unfriendly, but I don't think she is. Class was easier than she made it seem on the first day.
Very clear and helpful. Explained criteria consisely and was available for help outside of class
Great professor, i will recommend her, excellent, the best professor in Depaul University.
great teacher had her for discover chicago on the first day she talked about alot of work but it isn't that bad and her quizzes are only 2 questions max
I loved my discover chicago class Amber is very helpful and understanding and she gives the best advice. None of the work in the class was too hard, challenging yes, but it never stressed me out or anything. Not only that but she has two awesome helpers, Neil and Liz are amazing:D.
she takes off points in java programming that has absolutely nothing to do with the assignment. i would frequently get points off for displayed messages not being the wording she used despite them having not effect on how the program worked. horrible grader, bad responder, not lenient at all.
Extremely helpful and clear in direction and instruction. Follow her instructions to the letter and you cannot go wrong! Fully explains difficult concepts in various ways.
One of the best I've had here at DePaul! Super organized, crystal clear in terms of notes and explaining concepts. I'm not an online student, but I've watched lectures online and she's great about ensuring clarity for online students. Excellent at responding to e-mails. If you're taking CSC-202, I highly recommend Dr. Settle. (She's very nice too!)
Easy class. Field trips were not terrible and you get free food. Reading questions every week that are easy because answers are directly from the book. Final project is super easy and free food last class. She's interesting and friendly.
Took discover with her and my experience was in between. She gave way too much reading and our quizzes were random/small details. She despises cheating, so if you plan to, don't take her class! The trips taken were long and boring but great for bonding with people in your class.
Worest teacher i ever had she is hard on grading and she isnt helpful. Dont take her
I took her CSC241 class and I loved that class. SHE IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL INSIDE/OUTSIDE CLASS, RESPONDS TO E-MAILS VERY QUICKLY, AND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO ASK FOR HER HELP. in this class, all what you need to get A is "READ,DO HOMEWORK, and ASK her for help".
Pretty good teacher. Responds to questions fairly quickly. Answers pretty much all questions. Midterm wasn't too bad. Pretty much assignment based you do well on your assignments do well in class.
Awesome Teacher, pretty easy and very helpful when you ask questions via email, etc. Very fun and can be a very relaxed class if you get to know her.
Dr. Settle is the best teacher I've had at DePaul so far. She is incredibly responsive and helpful via email. She explains everything she expects from you clearly. I never felt like anything was unfair in her class. Good sense of humor, likes to make class fun when possible. I would take her for every CS class if I could.
One of the best instructors I've had as a CDM student at DePaul. Keeps class entertaining, quickly responds to e-mail, has an exceptional understanding of course content, very helpful, actually teaches useful things. Highly recommended. Homework does require actual work, and subject matter can be difficult if it's not your thing.
Prof Settle is very good at what she does. Her lectures are very informative and she makes the homework very clear on what she's looking for in particular. Settle is also spot on with communication outside of class. The class was most certainly not easy, but with enough practice, dedication and frequent emailing, it's not bad.
if you didnt do so well in 241 or dont get python all that well she is not the teacher for you. she is willing to help but she covers a lot in a short time. 242 is 3x harder than 241. by week 2 our class went from 25 down to 12. and the midterm/final add up to 70% of your grade.
Settle is a really nice lady. She'll answer her email ASAP, faster than any professor at Depaul. That's the possible. Majority of my classmates dropped the class, including myself by week 5. I had no idea what was happening. All my classmates were in the tutoring center getting help. Retaking CSC242 with Perkovic, much better teacher.
Upper echelon professor. We focused quite a bit on recursion, which can be difficult for a beginner, but that's how you learn. I am heading into my senior year and Settle is still my favorite. Extraordinarily helpful, good lectures, and never seems to miss a beat.
Amber Settle had to take over our CSC242 course halfway through the quarter. She should be commended for the way she handled it. A very engaging and clear instructor, who knows her stuff. She even learned our names in that short timeframe. I would take another course with her without hesitation.
Awesome professor! Explains everything and answers any questions you have thoroughly. Attendance was mandatory for lecture and lab. 1 programming assignment due almost every week which were very similar to the problems we did during lecture and lab. Allowed to bring like ten pages of notes to the midterm and final.
Overall great class, lectures are always relevant to the assignments and tests. If you need help it's unreal how fast Amber will respond to an email. Take this course if you're willing to work hard and want to learn. Otherwise, if you're looking for an easy A don't take this class.
Terrible. I'm a CS nerd but still she ruined this class. She has no idea how abrasive her personality is. She said once her own lowest grades were in CS classes. Well, it shows. Poor teacher with a bitter attitude.
Oh well. i had to drop her class. the reason is that if you work on a project you can work together up to 3 people. But in any case the second or third person gives hisher work to 4th person than automatically the first person did plagiarism even if you did not know about it. and 4th person is safe BIG TIME. NEVER TAKE HER
Respect her academic Integrity Pledge! Yes, unlike most professors she does check Stack Overflow, and does catch plagiarism. Good professor who makes you think with assignments, and makes you learn the language, and the surrounding 'ideas' behind it. Take her if you actually want to learn, not have the language fed to you. Isn't that hard though.
Amber Settle is one of the best professors at DePaul. She is not the easiest professor but if you work hard, her class will be very rewarding. She would go out of her ways to help you out, so email her when things starts getting confusing and you'll do fine.
Notes are allowed for midterm and final. Will help you on homework as long as you ask for the assistance.
Amazing.
This class can be incredibly difficult if you have no experience in java. Make sure you have passed CSC 241. If you have, this class will be so rewarding for you.
I started this class not knowing anything about programming and I was scared, but Amber was such a good professor that I was able to leave the class knowing the basics of python programming. Some people dislike her personality, but that doesn't matter. She gives clear lectures, replies to emails fast, and she is always willing to help/clarify.
I have not taken a lot of computer science courses, so the esoteric terminology was a little troubling. Great on email. Definitely willing to help whenever. Very nice. Horribly boring lectures. Decent and fair assignments. Overall enjoyed the experience. No major complaints outside of the painfully boring lectures.
This course is an accelerated Python course, and it was a ton of work, but the professor was available almost all the time, whether through email or at her office. She seems to really care about her students. There is a fair amount of homework, but if you don't study a lot, then you might not pass
She's a phenomenal teacher who knows her stuff. She'll make you work for it and you really gotta do the homework to pass but after taking her you will know what you need to in order to move up in CS. Also, make sure your work is your own, otherwise you must document who you work with.
Truly one of the best at imparting knowledge. She's very approachable, very good at ensuring you understand the material, and encouraged you to discuss the material. I hope to take her classes in the future
Professor Settle teaches the intro Python classes, and a workshop Java course occasionally. She is an incredible professor who really knows how to get the material across, which is so important in the beginning. Weekly homework assignment (2-4 coding questions), Midterm, Final. Will respond to emails within an hour at reasonable times. SHE CARES.
Very helpful! Took time to email about homework questions, and responds extremely fast. Will go over homework and labs in class if asked.
Just reads of power points, acts childish but the class is easy
Extremely condescending. Attempts to help when you reach out to her but it doesnt help. Takes off points for the most minuscule reasons and doesnt take into consideration that different teachers have different methods of coding. So if you dont code EXACTLY how she wants you to code you wont do well. I dont recommend her one bit.
I took her for a intro to java class. She responds to emails insanely fast. She is a little condescending, though. Her notes are very helpful. Assignments and tests are always clearly explained and laid out. Be extremely careful about group work, she will call you in to her office and ask you to explain your code or else accuse you of plagiarism.
Responds to e-mails quickly and is mostly helpful. Really just wants you to succeed. Allows you to work with others, just need to include names and what they contributed. Her lectures A LOT but it is helpful, although hard to sit through and pay attention. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I'd say crucial, especially since this was an intro course.
I took Settle for the Java Workshop class, and I highly recommend it. She teaches by introducing the material through in-class examples but more is actually learned by doing her homework assignments. The final was definitely more difficult than ones in 241 and 242 but doable. If you're confused on something, she posts great notes on D2L.
Professor Settle was a tough grader, but she explained why she took off points. The midterm was fairly easy, but the final was very challenging. However, she gives a substantial amount of partial points for your solutions even if your code doesn't have the right output. She's also always willing to help and will answer your emails very quickly
Amber is a great professor. She taught everything clearly and she is very helpful outside of Class.
Amber is a very tough teacher that makes everyone participate each day. There is an assignment every week that can be pretty tricky but she offers to help you by emailing her. There's also a lab each week that's pretty easy but worth pretty much nothing for your grade. Midterm and Final is worth 32% and 33% respectively with the final being hard!
Class is very heavy on lecture, you would want to pay attention in class. Don't space out because you'll miss important things for work. Strict on homework (no plagiarism/use of online code) but provides help via e-mail. Attending class every time is a must (no skips)! If you're on top of everything, you're good to go.
CSC242 students BEWARE. The midterm is easy, but the final is HARD. Do not think it'll be as easy as the midterm. There's not that many questions, like four. She'll tell you generally what the subjects will be on the final study the specific subjects. The final is very hard compared to the midterm. Do not think it'll be as easy!!!!!
Amber is quirky in that Aspie way that we've all become used to at depaul. She is a tough grader and final is brutal. Be ready to participate. She does not like it if you talk a lot. dont be that student.
I really enjoyed Amber's 2-credit intro to Java class. It's online but she does a great job time stamping important things for the online students. She's also really (kinda scary) fast at replying to emails and grading assignments. There's optional quizzes every class to help prepare for the final. Not condescending, just quirky and pretty funny.
Professor Settle is a fantastic professor. I 100% wish that I could have her for every computer science class I take in the future. She is somewhat hard, but you LEARN so much in her class. She is so good at explaining hard concepts and will answer emails within 30 minutes. If you are looking for a great teacher.. she is the one.
I pay for the prof to physically be in class so when she jets off to China for a conference, I am not getting my moneys worth. I think Amber is tired of teaching and would rather be doing research, she's an "Academic" after all. Also, it is not the fault of students if no females enrolled in her class. A positive, she will answer email creepy fast.
The only pro is that she is very accessible outside of class and responds to emails instantly if you need help. However, overall she rushes through the material, doesn't explain well, and is condescending. Good luck.
She is a really good comp sci teacher, overall you learn a lot through her class, she builds up tougher problems so it becomes easy to understand. she does hands on problems as well as lecture so your never really left confused with concepts. always responds to emails like right away.
Strict rules but they are easy to follow. Very fair grader; she does the grading herself so get ready for her to comment on how you're doing when you're in class! She leaves great notes on how to make your code better. Btw the final is harder than the midterm, so make sure you don't underestimate it.
She cares about her students. Clear grading criteria. Very strict about plagiarism!
Professor Settle is so great at breaking down concepts! CSC 243 is an accelerated intro computer science course using Python, but she covers the topics at a fair pace and even offers PDF notes. The programming assignments can be challenging, but she's very accessible when needing help with homework problems and responds promptly to emails.
Dr. Settle is awesome! She is very clear on what is expected in her class, and is always willing to help. I got a lot out of her course. Read the notes, study your assignments, and you are good to go! I'm honestly shocked at her ratings being anything less than 5, best prof i've had.
She is an OK teacher, explains topics pretty well. She goes over things very quickly sometimes. She emails back within 10 minutes. The midterm is much easier than the final.
You WILL have to work for your grades. You WILL get stuck on the homework often. You WILL have to ask for help. Amber Settle is an amazing teacher that gives good feedback and examples. Homeworks often take several days. I learned a lot about python from her class, and would recommend Amber to anyone who's interested in taking CSC243 :)
Amber was absolutely horrendous. Terrible at teaching, took points off for the smallest things, and will accuse you of cheating if you have similar code even though all her assignments, labs, quizzes, and exams are the same. I was able to end up with an A- but I had to do a lot of work outside of classes to teach myself. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Amber is a very strict professor! She suspects everyone of cheating but obviously we all learn the same thing so it would be the same... Do not take her she will ruin this class. I couldnt wait till I finished this class.
Amber is one of the best professors Depaul has to offer. With years of experience, she knows that students need to see many examples of the code to learn the concepts and how to write them. You have to show up to class, follow along, and participate in groups. However, that is way better than trying to google for help. Final is very hard prepare!
I would never take this professor again if I had the opportunity , you can tell shes heartless and takes her job way too seriously. The worst professor in the universe by far. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
Compassionate about computer science but has no empathy for students. Gives you no time to complete test, although she knows her assignments take a lot of time to solve. Dont take this class unless you enjoy being stressed and have no emotions. I wouldnt take this class again if my life depended on it. Everybody who left this class got happier.
Don't take this class if you're used to looking up answers, just one line of code got me penalized and threatened. Doesn't try to make the class fun at all, very boring if it isn't your first programming class, much harder if it is your first.
A really great teacher. She does a solid job of breaking things down and explaining difficult concepts. Homework is pretty straightforward. Some assignments are difficult, but she gives great help during OHs and is super accessible. If you did well in say AP CS this class will be the same with a more focused approach on recursion.
Okay Prof. Settle is GREAT! She is super helpful when you reach out for help, but won't give you the answers, she makes you work for it! She is a tough grader but that's how you learn. She leaves good feedback so you will know what you did wrong. Study for your exams!
If you want to actually learn coding. Don't do it. Take someone else. She has a overtly strict policy where she thinks everyone is cheating when at times coding can just be similar, it's a set problem not a whole app you have to code...
She is nice, just you have to work for your grade, weekly assignments, labs and a midterm and final exam. Exams are hard but if you pay attention you will do good.
If you are new to python I would not take Settle, or even CSC241 at DePaul. The people who dropped before the midterm were happy. Homework is a pain, tests are even worse and can be a bit rude. Take python on your own time, at your own speed.
What can I say. Solid instructor, prepares you for Data Structures, and dedicated instructor. Wants her students to succeed but is a little strict on syntax. (Use only material she taught you).
Rude, condescending. Very fast-paced class and she has very little patience if you're new to coding. NOT beginner-friendly, even though it's an intro course. Encourages going to the CDM tutors, but when you use coding they show you, she accuses you of cheating. Took this as the CS/MIS business core requirement - spare yourself and take MIS 140.
she's definitely a great teacher and knows her stuff. but she does go very fast. so she isn't the best for an intro class. she does answer her emails really fast tho.
just terrible RUN
Amber is one of the most effective instructors I have ever had. She really knows her stuff and knows how to teach it in a way that makes sense, and answers emails right away outside of class if you need help on assignments. She does call on people randomly to answer questions in class though.
She can be different for each person. Im a 4.0 student& try hard to achieve good grades. Can be passive-aggressive. HW- challenging but doable. 5 doublesided pgs notes-midterm-10 for final. I got A's on both exams doing everything minus textbook readings but they can help.took APCSP in hs but didnt take exam&have no real coding experience-did great
Worst professor I have come across. No one should take Amber.
Don't listen to any of the bad reviews on CSC 241 about Amber. She is a great professor, teaches great in class. Responds to emails immediately within minutes regarding anything. Her class is tough and gets hard, but if you ask for help, she will help you until you understand completely and she will not give up on you. Take her, she is great!
Her class is a little difficult but she will prepare you very well for the midterm and final, the only 2 tests. The tests are hard, but there are plenty of opportunities to learn via homework and labs. If you need help, Amber will help as much as you need until you learn it fully. Amber is a GREAT professor, don't listen to the negative reviews.
She doesn't know the difference between plagiarized and authentic code. She just denotes everything as plagiarized. This woman will ruin your life. Run for the hills and maybe leave the country if you can, but you still won't probably be far enough. Please do not take her.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. These guys obviously didn't pay attention in class and they paid for it; not the teacher's fault. The teacher teaches the material very well and it's easy to pick up if and only you attend class, which I assume the negative reviewers did not do. She is a great professor, and those willing to put work in will succeed
Professor Settle is very caring and is always willing to help if you put in the effort. You can tell she really loves what she does and cares about each of her students. One thing I will say is the midterm is wayyyy easier than the final. Study Heavily for the final!!
I wouldnt take her again. Her style of teaching isn't bad, she provides lots of practice in class. However, she is completely insane about using any material outside of class. Even though most coding students teach themselves a lot on the Internet. She makes a big deal if you use anything she didn't teach. I didnt learn anything or enjoy this class
She's objectively great. Clear explanations, answers any questions, & responds to emails quickly with genuine and detailed feedback. BUT! It's better to turn in code broken than get it right online with her. Rumors are true: I never cheated, got a 98 on the midterm and a 95 on the final, but I still got a plagiarism charge on a random HW. So lame.
Not an effective professor at all, doesn't seem like she wants her students to truly succeed. She also casually throws around plagiarism accusations..
If you take Amber then don't expect A grade. She puts false acquisition on student for plagiarism. Just don't take
Amber Settle is an excellent professor. If you're taking CSC 243 I would highly recommend going with her. Responds to her email pretty quick, accessible after class and through her office hours. She really wants everyone in her class to succeed. However without prior coding experience, the class might come off as difficult.
BY FAR the most professional and organized teacher I have ever had. Extremely good about communicating with the class about what is expected of you and clear directions for everything. Her teaching style is incredibly effective and helps to really help you understand the concepts. Anyone talking plagiarism probably just got caught using ChatGPT.
talks a lot but doesn't teach. lectures the whole time in class but students still dont know what's going on. Only the kids that knew python from before were doing good but if u need someone to teach u properly dont take her.
Avoid
Amber Settle is a good professor. She gave a clear instruction in every lecture, and always asked if everyone is understand about the concept that she is teaching. She just assigned one coding/lab assignment per week. The midterm exam is always easier than the final exam, she will grading based on which part of your work is correct.
This class is not friendly to procrastinators. Anyway, I had some fun with the class last year before changing majors. Informative lectures, restrictive but constructive grading, and she tries her best to put everyone in the right direction. Shame my heart wasn't in it after all, but that's OK. Isn't for everyone unless you have strong motivation.
You can not outside resources. She accused the class of cheating. The class was an introductory class.
she sat me down in her office freshman year and told me that i should consider switching out of CS about to go into my last quarter gradating in the winter in your face amber
Amber's class is no walk in the park, but she'll prep you well for the big exams. Stay engaged, use resources like unstuck study, and you'll succeed despite the challenges.
Not beginner-friendly.
Such a great prof. She does lectures with live examples that you can follow along with, so that you can apply in class ideas to outside assignments. It is not necessarily easy, but if you applied yourself in 241, you will be able to keep building your skills in 242 with the examples and repetition she gives. I didn't read the textbook and was fine.
Took her recently for fall term as a pre-requisite course. Never again, compared to the 241 professor I had (who was phenomenal). After receiving a horrible grade on my midterm she stated the number of student who received the lowest grade, while stating in the email to drop the course (to those who had an F or D).
Exams were way harder than the homework and covered material we never learned in class. Always accuses the class of cheating on impossible assignments without looking stuff up. Final was even worse than the midterm. No curve, barely any feedback, and grading felt random. Avoid if you can.
This class is extremely tough, and Amber Settle didn't make it any easier. She's a sweet lady, but she moves through lectures too quickly, and assignments are confusing. The questions on the midterm/final are not even remotely similar to what is on the assignments, and she includes topics she never covered because her pacing sucks. Avoid if you can
Dr. Settle is hands down the best professor I have ever had at DePaul. She is obviously very knowledgeable in what she teaches and you WILL understand the concepts if you go to class. Please ignore the people complaining about her pacing and exams, she does multiple in class activities every lecture that correspond directly to exams. She's great.
