Always making sure that everybody understands the material, making pauses to answer all the questions. Posts a lot of info on Moodle, although few chapters don't have corresponding slides, so get ready to write a lot. Easily accessible outside the class, especially before the tests. Posts solution and grades promptly. Overall, the best prof so far
Amenda is a decent prof. As someone who is not familiar with math at all, she taught chapters 1-6 very well, but chapters 7-10 were nightmarish. The material is extremely tough at this point and it seemed she was not aware that no one understood the content. She knows her stuff but makes too many mistakes. She's also very mechanical and impersonal.
Great professor; She's very organized and doesn't like "ambient noise" from the audience. Always takes (and answers) questions during lecture and is available when you need extra help. I found her tests reasonable and actually easier than the exercises she assigned which was nice. She doesn't post any notes though so attendance is mandatory.
She's a great teacher, she's also so organized, and her accent is perfect. This class is hard but if you did well in math2014 (calc2) then you should be fine. Also, her tests weren't as hard as i expected but you still need to prepare for them. Amenda is a pretty good pick for such a hard/confusing course.
Gives easy to understand explanations + lecture notes are crystal clear (with examples). Understand these and you should be covered for the tests/final. She posts her own exercises that are much more relevant to tests than the text. (Not for credit, but do these anyway!) Pleasant and articulate voice! Really nice & helpful outside of class.
Great prof, very appealing to look at.
These people must have had a different prof... the problem is she spends the entire class writing her notes nicely on the board for you to copy while trying to understand the material. You need to triple task because you have to listen to the explanations, copy down the notes, and answer questions. She made the lecture very stressful.
Her lectures are organized and logical just like a textbook. She speaks very clearly and replies to emails after class. Best prof ive ever had. Shes also a qt3.14
Pros include her ability to give clear lectures, provides online quizzes that help bring up grades and is generally an approachable prof. Cons include repeating too much and not getting to the point on the notes, not finishing the vector calculus part of the course ( curl, stokes/gauss thm) and giving extremely irrelevant questions on tests/exam
Lectures consist of copying off the board. Doesn't seem to understand questions so answers them inaccurately or just repeats what she already said without actually answering the question. Complains incessantly about students being noisy during lecture while I didn't hear anything at all.
Great at presenting concepts clearly but the tests were very hard and she doesn't really prepare you for them through the lectures. You'll end up teaching yourself how to get through the problems. Be sure to practice a lot!
Excellent prof! Genuinely cares about the success of the students.
The material is really hard and confusing, but I don't think anyone can take such a dry course and make it as interesting and as smooth as she did. By far the BEST prof in the math department, very organized, helps a lot, fair tests. The only thing is that you must attend all lectures, no slides or notes online. Textbook helps A LOT!!
Nice interactive lectures. Easy A.
She only writes notes on the board and you are expected understand the lecture, listen and write down the notes all at the same time. She doesn't put up anything on moodle asides exercise problems. Her exams are a lot harder than what she teaches in class. She is also a very tough marker.
She is very clear in lecture, however her lecture examples are easy and mislead you as the test questions are usually very difficult. Answers questions all the time. Find her marking unfair as she expects you to approch problems in her way and if you use an alterante method to get the same answer she will deduct marks unless she is familiar with it
Her lectures are so well organized and well explained. Ask questions if you need, she will answer and take good notes because she does not post anything online. The examples she gives are easier than the homework questions which are easier than the test, so study hard.
Very organized and prepared for lectures, examples are specific enough to prepare for assignments, and tests. Her tests and exams are easier than daily lecture examples, but sometimes she co-op with other profs in other sections to make tests, which could include some questions which you never seen b4, but it's not that difficult.
Great Lectures Answers every question with a smile, no matter how stupid the question
I signed up for this prof based on the favourable reviews on this site. Makes me wonder about the credibility of this site. This prof was lousy. I suggest you ask previous students and don't rely on this site. This site only accepts good reviews. You've been warned!
She knows her stuff. Her tests were fair. Her homework assignments were good, which is what the tests were mostly based off of. She is very sassy indeed. Her main down point is that she teaches different methods that aren't in the text book, and later you get confused. Plus she writes too fast, so taking notes is tough. Go to class! Not a bad prof.
She is a nice prof, explains things really clearly and patiently. She genuinely cares about her students, visit her about of class, she is super approachable. Her tests were manageable, if you did the quizzes and her assigned exercise problems, you would pass the course easily. Highly recommended.
Gives very irrelevant and difficult test questions, and does not give solutions to exercise problems posted, so you don't know how she wants you to solve the problem. She does not post lecture notes online, so you must make sure to attend class or you will fall behind fast. Her tests include material not covered in lectures or exercise problems.
Amenda is an excellent professor at the elementary level. She lectures the basic stuff perfectly however her tests and exams are at the Graduate level. She will tell you text book is optional but please dont listen to her, practice out the text as much as you can. She is a tough marker and only will give full marks for the way she teaches it.
Somewhat basic and mechanical towards solving problems. There were some insights gained but again, I could not solve textbook proofs based on the lecture stuff. Go to class, study her exercises and homework problems you will get an easy A!! Most questions in the tests were pretty close to the lecture examples.
Make sure you solve all her exercises and the problems done in class. She makes this class look so easy and I found this course to be tough when I took with another prof. The quizzes and midterms were easy though she's very strict in marking so always show your working. Definitely, take this course if she's teaching it. Don't skip classes.
Do all the exercises and go the class if you want to pass this course. Don't procrastinate the online quizzes or you could forget.
People say she's harsh and a difficult grader, might as well just say she's screwing students over. No bell curve, nothing whatsoever. If she's trying to look more intelligent by having low class averages at the expense of her students, it's not working.
complete the exercise problems and you're pretty much good. can put A LOT of tricks on the tests though you really have to know your stuff.
she is a very difficult person to deal with. She doesn't want to help
All in all good prof. I don't know if its just me, but i think she has a problem of repeating words and phrases over and over. It gets irritating sometimes.
Very good Professor
A silent Prof without her notes!!!!
She's very good at teaching the concepts and I really enjoyed her lectures. However, her exams were really hard and you had to know the material like the back of your hand in order to get an A. However, she has a great personality and you can tell that she wants to be there.
Amenda is a super caring and helpful prof. she helps a ton during her office hours and the key to fully understanding the material she presents is to do the exercise problems and ask plenty of questions during her office hours. her test questions can be challenging but they teach you to really think and understand what you are doing.
Good things first, she makes herself clear with respect to the material and requirements. However, she is full of herself and looks down her nose. Makes you embarrassed to ask questions, puts you on the spot and humiliates you. Just disrespectful and condescending full of attitude. Not approachable. All in all, greatly disappointed.
Examples she gives in class are nothing like what questions you get on the exams. She is extremely rude if you ask a genuine question. Hands down the worst prof I have taken in all 4 years of being at York (yes, i decided to take math 1505 my last year of york lol). AVOID AT ALLLLLL COSTS.
She demands to be respected and when you ask her a question she starts laughing or smiling even if it is right or wrong. Like why would you laugh even if it is wrong, arent you there to help us? Does not share her notes so it is hard to get them unless u follow from the textbook. Thank God I dropped this class for 1510, I will retry it again.
very rude
She sucks !! Do not ever ever ever take this course with her. She expects students to already know the material cause its a first year course (expects them to be right out of highschool) i am not a math major but i needed math credits and when i asked her a question she gave me a dirty look as if i should already know it. Class average was 37%!!!!!
Very condescending prof, I dont know where they got her from. Doesn't let anyone leave early, always on time or she will call you out. Someone's phone rang my accident and she got very mad.
She's actually a really good professor, writes and explains concepts clearly. She may be strict in class, but that's so students are able to focus and not get distracted by the shuffling in the last 5 minutes of class. Also, she is very funny, kind, and approachable if you go to her office hours and show you put in the effort - not condescending.
Clearly the person at the bottom is lying as 6 people disagree. If you guys don't listen then that's on you. She's extremely rude and ridicules others.
Amenda was okay. I wasn't in her section but I went to her lectures since she did a better job at explaining than my prof. Intimidating at times, but she provided worksheets to the class and would take them up so I wasn't completely lost. Her notes are clean and organized and does a decent job at explaining and I'd choose her over the other profs.
her classroom was so full bc EVERYONE went to her lectures. she gets a bad rep, but out of all the math profs she explained things the clearest and goes step by step. she usually hands out worksheets that help. attendance is a must so if u wanna skip make friends. dont talk or go on ur phone during class she'll call u OUT she got eyes like a hawk
Amenda is by many means, a good prof. She is clear and thorough in her explanations and examples and is always ready to answer any questions students might have. She gives clear logic for all her examples and explanations and is quite good at building on the last unit's material. However, she is quite strict with her classroom etiquette.
She explains the materials clearly. Practice at home is a MUST. Don't talk or play on your phone during class, otherwise, she will stop teaching until it's quiet. And do not enter at the front door when you are late to the lecture, she will blame on you that "if u r late, plz come at the back, not the front" EVERY SINGLE TIME...
All the tests and exams are webassign questions. Webassign is not even considered for marks , I couldn't afford webassign, it's bad enough I was paying for everything else. She bases your whole mark on test and exams. Beware no bell curve with her or extra assignment. Theres no way she'll give you free marks like other profs do with surveys
Webassign just condenses textbook questions to specific ones. Amenda's whack for not giving out assignments to boost your mark, everything is riding on your tests and exams. She's better than the other profs but she expects everyone to just know the content that she explains vaguly. Math is already hard and the profs make it harder
All her notes were nothing that was on the midterm. You could literally skip her class and just do web assign and that will be the midterm/exam. I had to watch YouTube videos to learn how to do things. Someone asked her a question and she told them "thats a bad question. any good questions?" so rude.
She explains the concept clearly, and make sure students understand it. Her test was kinda hard, but if you follow all the materials and practice the exercise problems, youll be fine.
she has a really bad attitude and is kind of rude, also gets pissed when people are late and wastes time telling them to come from the back of the class, doesnt stop talking till the exact second class ends. the midterms were easy i had high 80 going into final, but she made the final pretty damn hard i flopped it and it lowered my final grade alot
The course is hard and requires a lot of practice, but she teaches the basic concepts very well. She is rude and unapproachable, but she is still an incredible professor. She is one of the only math professors who actually knows what she is doing, and she makes the midterms based entirely on the Webassign so an A+ is doable with hard work.
Amenda is one of the rudest, worst, and most uncaring professors I have ever had. During the COVID-19 pandemic she doesn't have the care in the world to have a zoom lecture or session where she can help the students as there's no more in class sessions. She also doesn't have the audacity to bell curve marks with her 45% class average. Useless.
Amenda is one of the worst professors I have had. All she does is care about taking the students money and making them retake the course again. She doesn't care about helping the students to get a better mark rather she just wants to take your money and set you up for failure. Craziest thing is she's making the students take an oral exam for MATH.
worst. professor. ever. rude. uncaring. set up for failure
This was the first university math course I had taken and Im honestly glad Professor Chow was my lecturer. Her classes are at the earliest times like 8:30 a.m but its totally worth going to because her notes are handwritten and through. Her tests were easy tbh and similar to the textbook. The final was harder but not impossible to get a B+/A on.
Good prof, just clearly doesn't care how much the students like her. Probably the best prof in the course (attended other sections) in terms of clearly explaining concepts but even then the test questions were quite difficult. If you've taken calculus in high school it'll really help you.
Lecture HEAVY, seems very nice and approachable but is a very rude person. For instance, once in class a classmate of mine had a question relating to the math topic and her question had been basically answered before but I guess she wasn't paying attention or understood, and the prof says, "Okay guys, that was a very bad question lets move on".
I've been taken MATH1505 with several professors and Dr. Chow is by far the best. She's very well versed in the material. Unfortunately, solutions are drawn on the chalkboard. I found Dr. Chow to be approachable and happy to help answer quick q's outside of class (had classes back to back) or longer q's via email. Highly recommend for MATH1505.
Her tests were really hard but overall she was a good prof. From what I've understood she's the only good prof that teaches this course. Just make sure you understand the material you won't be able to get away with memorizing.
Professor Chow was alright. Her lectures were really informative, and her homework and quizzes were challenging. However, this course was online and was taken during the summer, and it was multivariable calculus, so that wasnt a smart choice on my behalf. She had a group project as a final to preserve academic honesty, which was the only drawback
She is the worst professor I have ever had, she is rude and does not care about her students at all. if you have the option of taking literally any other professor, I suggest you do that. She lacks common sensitivity and explains concepts so vaguely and unclear.
Lectures can be dry but are important because you definitely need to copy her lecture notes as she doesn't post them online or give an alternative if you happen to miss class. Doesn't come off as a caring professor but her lectures/notes are clear so your grade is dependent not really on the quality of the lectures but how you study.
Very rude. She will only set you to failure. I will NEVER recommend anyone to take her course. Trust me, It is better to pick someone rather than taking her course and failing/getting a low grade. She is VERY RUDE. I will NEVER take her course, ever again. Trust me when I say this. Worse prof ever.
Amenda Chow is one of the best profs I had since coming to York. She's very caring and is responsive whenever I need to ask her a question that I do not understand. I recommend taking this course with her. The material is super light compared to MATH 1300, but it just requires a lot of thinking and practice.
She is very rude, and she does not care about student's efforts. She just assumes everyone is copying each other or solutions from the Internet. Every time, I explain what I am trying to solve the question by myself, she just told me to contact the math office to have exploratory meeting. She wants all her students fail the class. Worst professor.
She has laughed multiple times at some of my questions during her office hours and is in general very rude and condescending.
She is very rude and does not care about how her students feeling. She thinks everyone copies the solution from the Internet. The WORST professor I have met
Probably the worst prof I've had so far at York. She suspected half the class of cheating on assignments even though they did not and she seems to be more concerned about catching "cheaters" on every chance rather than assign TAs that grade effectively and fairly. Do not take her if you have a choice not to.
She's a really good lecturer, I'll give her that, but the TA's will take marks off everything I mean EVERYTHING. The questions she assigns are really easy and even if u have the final answer correct there are ways you will get MANY marks off even though your proof makes sense. She is also pretty rude when showing up to her offie hours
She is a VERY RUDE professor I have EVER had. I will NEVER suggest anyone taking her courses ever again. Most of her emails are straight-out rude and her replies too. I would say, she must learn how to talk with students and she's a worst for teaching. Assignments are marked zero without reason. She doesn't even care about students AT ALL.
she is very rude. She wants students to solve the problem in the way she learns it from Alberta. If you don't follow it , she will assume you copy from the internet. Attend her class is most effective way
She's the rudest professor I've had, very unapproachable, and calls students out for having "bad questions". Her exams are very different from what is taught in class, I would give her a lower rating if I could, avoid her at all costs.
Shes not even teaching this semester for math 1300 so why did York make students sign up to be in her class when we would have been thrown into the sections with Juris? This is pretty unfair, her quizzes made are much better than the content but dont match with the level the assignments are given. I dropped, could have saved money if I knew
She's awful. Probably the worst professor in the math department. Lecture videos take too long to finish, TAs just assume you cheat on assignments even though you never cheated and she's a very rude prof. She really needs to learn how to talk to students. Please avoid her if possible.
avoid this prof at all costs , one of the worst experiences of math I've ever had and will deduct marks for doing work in a way that's not hers. please choose any other section
BEWARE!!!! I wish I had good things to say. I want to believe she has good intentions but it is becoming harder and harder to believe. She doesn't even grade the whole assignment. Save your money please.
I was always distressed about the grades of the assignments because they're designed to make you fail. She randomly chooses few selective questions to grade the entire assignment and skips the other ones. If you've answered 6 questions correctlyin a total of 10but failed to provide the perfect answer on the other 4, you're guaranteed to fail.
I thought this course would be very similar to 1300 in the sense that it would be challenging myself to some degree but 1310 with Amenda Chow has been way far beyond what I thought the homework assignments would have been in terms of difficulty. The quizzes were okay but how the homework and quizzes were weighed it's very difficult to pass.
I found her lectures to be very informative and helpful for the quizzes. The assignments were very challenging; expect to use the textbook, attend tutorials, and use YouTube videos to get a passing grade.
The worst prof ever at York. She only corrects about 4 questions out of about 10 to 12 questions, so if you did bad on those 4 questions, you are set to fail the assignments. Also, if your answer is correct but your solution is not how Amenda does her solution, you are set to fail the question and barely get any points. Please save your money.
Good luck to those who took it.
She is too pleased with herself Garbage Professor
Her lectures and assignment are totally different and unrelated. No professor ask student to complete all question in assignment and say "only a subset of questions will be marked" like wtf. Worst professor at 1000 level math course. She ruined every student career who wants to take math major. Terrible.
Her recorded lectures are good. But she has no empathy, she does not care about students, she thinks students are machines. Humaneness = 0 AVOID HER!!! So many students dropped the course, only handful left, and not sure if everyone will pass. U need to spend days trying to figure out how to attempt assignments
Her lectures are clear, concise and help a lot with understanding as well as the completion of the projects. 30% of our grade was quizzes, which allowed for a solid grade boost. You got to replace your worst assignment AND quiz. Overall a very solid experience and very well-run course despite being asynchronous. I'm happy to have learned a lot.
Avoid this professor AT ALL COSTS! To get a high mark you need to dedicate extensive amounts of time and effort. The risk and return is not worth it, you can spend your time on things more beneficial to your career.
The rudest and most conceited professor. Outwardly rude to and does not care about students. Difficult to approach, judges students' questions and often refuses to answer/ignores students. Gets annoyed when asked for clarification. Teaches material way too fast, expects students to grasp concepts immediately. Avoid if you respect yourself.
Great professor, she really explains the material very well however her assignments are tough. Be ready to spend hours on the assignments. The TA's are tough on grading as well, small mistakes can lead to very low marks. Overall, I would take her again. Very nice lectures
Terrible professor, had her in my first year. She incorrectly identified me of academic dishonesty, and even after our meeting, she did not give me the marks I deserved. Feeling pressured that she may continue this wrongful accusation to the department, I had to drop the course. AVOID.
Professor Chow tried her best to teach Math 1013, but her teaching style is very much targeted to her Lassonde Students in the class those who are in Engineering/Computer Science as compared to her Life Sci Students. Her notes are not very example heavy and more so word theory based so it can be hard to relate to when studying or doing homework.
Professor Chow is an inspiring lecturer and she always cares about her students. She highly values academic integrity from all of her students, and wants all of her students to do their best. I found her class to be very informational and very easy to understand, so I was able to ace her class.
Amanda is a pretty good lecturer, although some concepts were wishy-washy. Make sure to be doing LOTS of homework as questions are pulled from worksheets/textbooks. Beware of the grading format, 50% final is a bit scary and 80% final if you miss the midterm. Make sure you consistently study as the last part of the course is a huge info dump.
Can't lie, this was the most mid tier prof i've had, she was super boring and dry. Exams, quizzes, etc were pretty easy and fair if you had a solid understanding of calculus in high school.
i did decently well in the course compared to how i did in high school calc, but this prof is just stressful to be around... she seems kinda snarky when answering questions (and if nobody knows how to do a problem, she just skips it) sooo beware
She is a amazing professor. she is so kind and sweet, she gives review of pre-requisites before proceeding to the next topic. Also she bring something for the class and let us play with during breaks. The grade is not reflection of her teaching the grade is skill issue tbh.
Such a loveable prof who will always greet everyone with a big smile. She usually brings "toys" for students to experiment base on the knowledge that was learnt in class
Extremely good lectures, stays after class to help. Clearly loves Calculus and teaching it.
She is a great professor, even though she doesn't record lectures and post slides but you'll do okay by attending class and taking notes. Her lectures are organized, she has mid-class break, sometimes have real-life examples related to the content during break, is passionate in teaching and answers questions.
Majority of the grade was in the midterm (30%) and final (50%) so it was a little intimidating, but the course is essentially a repeat of Gr. 12 Calc with the exception of some concepts such as integration, riemann sums, epsilon-delta, etc. TBH I didn't attend most of her lectures, but her teaching style was very coherent in the ones I did attend.
Amazing prof, arguably best prof for 1013, does actual demos to explain concepts and gives good examples and has very engaging lectures
If you do not have a math/engineering background, do not take her. She expects you to know a lot of information and makes things unnecessarily difficult. Her exam is worth a lot and she does not record lectures. Most of the time you are writing her notes instead of understanding the math. She does not share the slides either
Amenda Chow is a really amazing prof and made my first year experience in her class way better. She doesn't use slides and instead makes her own slides.
Interesting prof. Good lecturer, but very passive-aggressive at times (especially whenever contacting via e-class or email).
Professor Chow is an engaging instructor who makes complex calculus concepts more digestible. While attendance is mandatory and exams are weighted heavily, using resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook can help you succeed in this course.
If you don't have any background in calculus, DO NOT TAKE HER! She does not provide any notes after the lecture, no examples during class, her midterm and exam was a disaster. Once again, please don't make the same mistake I did. I recommend switching.
