Hated this class. No matter how much help I got or how much I studied, I'd still fail. Kolarkar was willing to help, but was a little intimidating and definitely rushed through material in class. You really have to have a physics brain to do well.
The difference between his tests and what he teaches are universes apart. Lectures are easy, however he never finishes any of his example problems, saying "you know how to do it from here", and leaving it as so. Some of his T.A.'s are great, however. Labs are good ways to learn the material, however, homework and SI sessions are not enough for exam
Dr. Kolarkar is a nice guy and enjoys teaching physics. He wants you to learn the material but he is not a great lecturer. He will often rush through material in class and leave examples for students to solve. Tests were very hard. However 30% of your grade is from lab, class participation, etc. where most teachers it's 10%. Curves at the end.
Tests are extremely tough, averages are generally in the 30-50s range. He scales at the end, which is what saved my semester. The lectures are tough to understand, and the homework problems aren't very helpful for the tests. I mostly watched Khan academy videos to help, but they can only do so much. He's a great guy, but the tests are awful.
He tries his best to get students to understand, but also gets frustrated when they do not. He describes tests as "homework problems you take to the next level." In other words, lectures and hw don't do much when his problems are in another galaxy. Gets test questions from his own ideas and labs. Gives seldom partial credit.
Very difficult class. Tests are impossible.
Lot of demonstrations and example problems to help in lectures. Clicker questions everyday. The tests are tougher than examples, and there isn't much partial credit. Conceptual and mathematical problems on tests. He curves it in the end. Doing the web assigns help.
Very hard class but he curves at the end
This class was fairly difficult for being a class for non engineering majors. The test format changed on a weekly basis. Never knew any true grading scale until classes were over. The problems given in class seemed easy, but once you get to the homework they get harder, and on the test they were nearly impossible.
He tries in many ways to help his students. Good thing about his class is that exams are only small percentage of final grade. Many other opportunities to raise grade. Tests are tough and not much partial credit. In the end he was fair with his grading. About 50% of class received As and Bs.
He really cares about how you're doing. Our SI quit at the beginning of the semester, so he held review sessions before each test, and he changed the tests so that we would do better on them. He really values student input, which is awesome. If you put in work (a lot of work), the class is manageable, but unless you're a physics whiz, it'll be hard
Not a clear lecturer & will stop halfway through every problem in lecture. He expects you to figure them out. Offers a resource room but don't ask him for help. He told me to "make up your own problems bc physics is everywhere" when I sought help on topics I didn't understand. Reviews emphasize things never on the exam & grades are never put in.
Dr. K the nicest professor I have every had. He cares so much about his students understanding the material. Absolutely go to class and do all of the homework. Try to participate in Piazza and make modifications to problems, and then he might give you extra credit. He is so nice in office hours. His explanations are normally pretty good.
First and foremost, Kolarkar's class is not easy and his teaching method will take some getting used to. But let it be known: you WILL LEARN physics. His teaching method and tests forces you too - unlike some other profs. If you're an engineer (esp. aerocivilmech) I highly recommend you take him. For biomeds and arch students its not worth it.
Dr. Kolarkar's teaching style focuses on making you learn the material independently through your own thought and own problem-solving. This can be helpful in some respects. However, it results in him giving you problems to work without giving answers, and not giving you direct help when you ask for it. It also doesn't help your grade.
Avoid! I've had so many problems from this class. He threatens to not scale on tests with averages in the 50s and 40s. I've had TA's put someone else's failing grades in my canvas. Not helpful in office hours. Lectures aren't clear. His grading is subjective & based on what he thinks you do.5 Unless you took AP physics from a clear teacher, avoid!
Kolarkar wants everyone to enjoy Physics, he really does enjoy his job and it shows in how he respects the students. Anyone who shows a serious effort in class will make the grade that they want. Kolarkar saved me several times by going over tests and giving points back. His tests are difficult because of the material covered so expect to work hard
Do not take this class if you do not have a physics brain!! I studied to hard for every test and still did terrible on most of them. He "modifies" homework questions for the tests, and makes them almost impossible to solve. In class, he doesn't explain example problems well. The final exam was the hardest test I've ever taken.
First time taking a physics class ever, which didn't help. This class was extremely difficult and nerve racking. Be prepared to teacher yourself EVERYTHING through outside resources. SI doesn't help. He was kind of blunt and rude in office hours, sucks to suck mentality. Test average are 55%, final EXAM is scaled which saved our class. Lab is easy
He was a really tough teacher for a hard subject. He gave lots of visual examples of what he's teaching but his tests were almost impossible. I barely got a D and I studied a lot. Grading was confusing because he changed how his tests were laid out and graded for every test and barely gives a curve. He has an accent which is tough sometimes.
The highest class average on a test was a 59. Gave "Pre-Lecture Quizzes" before every class and homework due once a week. He's so smart he doesn't even know how to dumb himself down enough to explain it to people who have never done physics before. Avoid him at all costs, but if you HAVE to take him, do well in the labs, it saved my grade.
Awful professor. Highly recommend not taking his class.
Easily the highlight of my semester. He's passionate about physics, he's very approachable, and he really works with the students who he can tell are trying hard in class. Also he's actually really funny if you're paying attention, but if you're not then you'll likely miss a lot of his humor.
Dr. Kolarkar is great. He is there to help you anytime you need it. Physics is hard, but if you read the book and get help, you can succeed. His grading system is loosely based on how you have progressed, not necessarily a number grade. Don't get me wrong, you have to work, but if you try and progress, he will help you out. Take him!
He's very bad at explaining things in my opinion. He's obviously passionate about physics but I found it hard to understand the way he phrased his questions to the way he explained anything. Would not recommend.
Dr. K is the man. His class is tough (much lower test averages than other prof), but he will take those averages/comparison into consideration. He is funny, 7 his active learning classroom has made physics interesting. He wants you to succeed, so he wont tell you the answer- you work for it. Especially good if you take MCAT & pre-professionaltests.
Go to class and office hours and you will be fine. He pays attention to who is really trying and putting in the extra effort. If he sees you trying he is more likely to give you a better grade. Extremely nice and helpful. I would take him for physics 1610 if it was offered.
Very difficult course, I had the flipped classroom and it was an awful experience. He also answers your questions with a question which does not help. He is a very nice man outside of the physics classroom (aka office hours, which you must attend to pass) Also very forgetful and will forget your meeting time and will forget to bring your tests .
Dr. K is passionate about physics, but his teaching methods definitely only work form some people. He teaches his physics courses in a flipped classroom style, where you watch pre-class videos before every class. In class, he does demonstrations and you work on worksheets. His tests were difficult and he tries to throw you off on certain questions.
Class cool Labs the devil
Dr. K is the best at what he does. His classes are very hard, but doable. You have to stay on top of everything to get an A, but you will know physics well by the end of your class. As far as I have heard, other physics professors' courses are just as hard, but they offer a lot less guidance. I would highly recommend him.
He posts videos on canvas before every lecture, expects you to watch it and understand and in the lecture, he would simply give "Ninjaws", a worksheet filled with numericals, and would expect you to solve it. He will be there to help you if you have difficultis, but won't explain unless you ask. Exams are tough, work hard if you don't know physics!
He teaches a flipped classroom. We watched the lectures outside of class and in class did worksheets while he did examples. He checks attendance and participation with iclickers. There is homework online as well as lab pre class assignments and lab reports. The final and the tests were very hard. You will learn physics, but you have to work hard.
Dr. K is a good professor for PHYS 1600. He cares and wants to show real examples of physics. The lectures were sometimes a little vague and a lot of times I would have to seek out extra help to understand the concept. Labs help. Don't miss labs.
See, Dr. Kolarkar teaches a lot of weed-out courses, so you'll see a lot of angry reviews. In reality, he can be tough at times, yet he genuinely wants to help you out. He dedicates HOURS of his day to help (willing) students. I repeat, he teaches weed-out courses. Take him and be prepared to do the work.
Great guy. He' into the whole flipped classroom idea (I'm not). However, he does a lot of research into teaching strategies. Your grade the amount of work you put into it. Plane and simply. He provides the path. You just have to walk it
His teaching methods are.. different from the rest of the physics department. He doesn't give you notes, but rather video lectures to watch before class. You are expected to learn from the videos, and work practice problems during class. It's not a bad system, just... different. It really forces you to learn something. Also he's got some humor too.
First person I met who doesn't teach and is quite proud of himself for it. Avoid like the plague. Rely on other students and build a support structure, if you don't have any other choice. Go to class for participation but don't take anything you "learn" there very seriously as it will not come with ANY solution. If possible, drop before midterm.
He holds "office hours" weekly in the back of village dining which are SO helpful! We were always there 2+ hours working on problems. He really wants his students to succeed but at the same time its up to YOU to do the work and learn. Grades based on your improvement over the semester. I failed the first two tests and got a B. god bless him
Dr Kolarkar has told me point blank that he puts concepts that we have never seen before on tests so we can learn to think critically. I get that he wants to teach us that but a test is not the time to do it. The class average on the final was a 55 and he said we did better than he expected. Why would a prof expect us to do bad?Cuz he didn't teach
10/10 would never recommend to any engineering student that has to take physics. I really can't respect a teacher that doesn't answer emails about scheduling a meeting time to receiving extra help. He has a good sense of humor if that counts for anything.
Dr. K is an absolute sunshine. BUT his class is SO hard. I have never worked that much for a B in my life. The good thing is that he grades each person based on their improvement. And if you participate in class and go to office hours, he will help you out. He is so passionate about physics and really loves his students. Love him, hate physics.
He does not teach in class. He hands you worksheets to do and doesnt give the right answers or go over them in class. 1/5 would never take again
He's the worst professor I've had here. He does not teach. He gives you videos to watch outside of class but they have zero correlation with his exams or homework. Be prepared to score in the 50s on most of his tests with no explanation or key afterwards from him besides an angry speech. His SI/ office hours are no help as well
Really nice, pretty funny guy. Lectures are online before class and you pretty much have to teach yourself, but he'll help and walk you through it if you ask. Very approachable outside of class for help. Homework is bonus and can add up to 8 points to your grade. Very hard class, but doable. 12-point grading scale, so I made a B with a 76%.
Dr. K is a very nice guy and really cares about his students. He teaches a flipped classroom, and, personally, I liked it better. Be sure to watch the pre-class videos; they help more than you think. The class is tough, but if you work for it he rewards you. Online extra credit homework is also very helpful.
Teaches in a flipped classroom. I personally found it to be very helpful because the worksheets he hands out gives you a chance to practice and prepare for the exams. Exam averages were high for physics (around 75). Very passionate about physics and you can definitely tell.
The worksheets he gives you are super helpful. He wants everyone to work together and essentially teach each other because its supposed to help you learn better...I think it worked because I really have learned a lot. He is super nice and will help you if you ask. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Best teacher for physics 2. I would take him again.
Provides everything you need to be successful, but it is up to you to do it. Provides review sessions, in class help, and optional homework for extra credit.
If you've had a bad experience with flipped classroom settings definitely avoid this one, it's the absolute worst.
I definitely think that a class like physics specially engineering physics should not be taught like he does. The only reason to go to class is for the clicker points his lectures are totally useless, he is hands down the worst professor ever. Yes he is nice but that's not gonna help me learn. I seriously regret taking this class and so does my GPA
Dr. Kolarkar uses a flip-style class. Pre-class videos to learn from, so you teach yourself. Test averages are from 48-58 every semester. There is no curve. Bonus percent to final grade for doing homework. Avoid him at all costs. No matter how hard you work, go to office hours or SI, if you don't get physics, you will finish with a C. Stay away.
Dr. K wasn't a bad teacher but he does teach a flip-styled classroom. 3 tests (10 MC and 3 FR) and if you're competent with the concepts and the homework you should do fine. He gives a lot of leeway when it comes to grades including a 12 point scale and taking the HW for bonus. STUDY for the Final. I got a 91 and that was the highest in our class
Dr. K is a great professor! His tests are hard, so study thoroughly for them, even if you took physics in high school. He uses a flipped classroom, but counts homework as bonus and is accessible outside of class. This class weeds out many engineers, but doing well is possible if you do the work and show him that you care about his class.
Dr. K is great. He is hard, but you do learn. While everyone else fails the common final, you will do well if you had him! Put in effort to participate and show him that you learned. In the end you will get the grade you deserve, not necessarily your grade on canvas (thankfully).
Really funny guy. I've exclusively studied experTA and what he says in class and done well on the exams. Definitely the best option for general physics but don't slack.
What you have to understand is Dr. K teaches weed out courses (meaning he wants students who are not serious to drop). His tests are very hard, and they are pretty much your only grades. Also the fact that he uses a flipped classroom does not help. As long as you show up to class and work hard then you should pass (C or a D, but still pass).
interesting professor. Uses a flipped classroom where you watch videos and take quizzes on the material before lecture. It got annoying towards the end of the semester when youre busy with other classes. He really cares about how you do on the final and will curves grades based on individual performance in class. Tough class but he is helpful.
Dr. K is a good professor for a hard class. He's not the best, and I'm sure you could find better, but physics is a really hard subject to teach. If you read the book, do the expertTA problems, get a friend to tutor you, use clutch prep, and ask for help, you'll be fine. I hate studying, and didn't much and did pretty well.
He uses a flipped classroom where you have to watch videos before class to learn the material. So you do alot of teaching yourself. Make sure you go to class and do the worksheets because that is where the tests come from for the most part. It is a very hard class, but he really does his best to explain everything to you. I did alright in the class
Dr. K is a wonderful man and a very straightforward professor. Tests are hard BUT IT'S PHYSICS. You have to go to class, do problems outside of class, and put in the work to pass. ETA counts for a lot of bonus so do it religiously. He does a lot of the test problems in class and he provides tons of resources for his students to do well. TAKE HIM.
Dr. K tries so hard to make sure his students do good. But with that being said, it's a hard class and you have to put in the work too. I failed 2 tests and still made a B, he just wants to see that you are going to office hours and trying. His classroom is flipped which some people don't like but it helps give more time for problems in class.
Dr. K is a really fun professor, if you go to his lectures, he brings out a ton of fun props to screw around with, and his NINJAWS are super helpful in studying for tests. That being said, the tests are in another league. The ETA problems are helpful when it comes to show your work problems, but the conceptual problems are out of this world.
If you have an option, don't take this class. Dr. Kolarkar is a great person, but not a great professor. He teaches using the flipped classroom method which is terrible for a class like physics. I have been to every SI session and watched every video multiple times and I am still on the verge of a D. We had 3 tests that make up 55% of your grade.
The scheduled lectures are not helpful, but there are a few review sessions scattered throughout a week. Some material on the tests were either not covered or much more difficult than covered on the worksheets given in class. Buy access to ExpertTA practice problems because the in-class worksheets don't go too in-depth.
Dr. K uses a flipped classroom and posts his lectures in videos on canvas with a video and quiz before every class. In class in mainly worksheets and demonstrations and polleverywhere questions. Quiz at the beginning of every lab as well. Expert TA is the most useful tool he gives you, and will give you extra credit at the end of the semester.
He is a very nice guy who is obviously very passionate about teaching. I don't think his use of a flipped classroom is awful, I just think parts of it could be done better. His tests are hard, but he also offers a ton of resources to help you. Physics is hard- there's no way around that, but I think his class is doable if you put in the work
Dr. K is an amazing person and professor. His class is not easy, however, this is physics we're talking about, it's not supposed to be easy. If you take his class, be prepared to grind throughout the entire semester. He offers many resources you can use any time of the week to help you in your pursuit of a high grade. Weed out class for sure.
Dr. Kolarkar is very smart, but I struggled learning physics under him. He has a flipped classroom which encourages working before class. This helps if you have no social life and all the time in the world. I found it hard to learn from his worksheets but they were easy to follow after I taught it to myself from the textbook. He scaled at end of yr
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. He has a backwards classroom method that makes learning next to impossible. You can study for weeks and weeks and still take the test and fail. He gives no answers to any in class assignments until a few days before the test. Avoid this man at ALL COSTS!!
He is a great lecturer and likeable human being, and the test is fairly easy compared to guazzotto. My only complaint is that the class is way too big. It is not his problem though.
Dr. K is not a bad professor but in my opinion he isn't the best choice. You learn through his videos outside of class and worksheets. The test end up being pretty difficult and he seems to expect you to already mostly know the concepts. If you like to see actually problems worked out I won't suggest Dr K. Extra credit for ExperTA and 'improvement'
Very hard to make a high grade in this class, as any physics 2 class. Every test so far has had at least one person make below a 15 and the average grade has been between 40-50 for every test. He will curve at the end of the year and gives extra credit for "improvement" which is very had considering material gets much harder as the tests go on
Dr. K has been the best professor I have taken in Auburn, hands down. Usually I do not like physics at all but he made lectures much easier to understand by comparing physics to real life situations. He will not hand you a good grade but there is not another professor in Auburn who cares more about his students success than Dr. K. 100% recommend!
Dr. K is 100% the best prof I've ever had. He does flipped classroom, but it is only watching 10-20 minute videos that are very informative. I hated Physics 1 but having him for Physics 2 made it my favorite subject. He dropped our lowest test and his level of difficulty (which wasn't bad) made the common final a breeze. Go to his Village dinners!
His dedication to making the course better was truly inspiring. He was always willing to listen to every student's need. He deserves five stars just for that.
Dr K is AMAZING. Physics is hard, but he made it my easiest class this semester. You go over material he posted online first half of class, then do worksheet second half and he posts the answers to review prior to tests. Common Final wasn't hard. If he knows you and you go to LA sessions, office hours etc, increases chance for A. Drops lowest test!
kolarkar is an OK teacher at best. Most of the class he plays with his toys and then writes an equation and works a problem. Doesn't explain things much at all, and you basically teach yourself. Would recommend choosing a different teacher
His lectures are more interesting than helpful, usually, but he gives SO many opportunities to get practice problems and offers outside help every day of the week for most of the day. While his class is hard, he gives many opportunities to succeed. Also, going to class helps to understand some of the long answer on his tests.
Dr. K is a decent professor in the classroom and what he teaches is pretty easy to understand. However, his tests are WAY more difficult than any worksheets or "NINJAWS" that he provides, so that's ridiculous. I definitely dont recommend taking him if you want an A or B
Doesn't solve problems all the way through, criticized our abilities as students when we didn't use the book online(even though he never clarified which chapters we did), and he was horrendous at communication. Lectures were posted on the OneNote that he never told us about and he stopped doing class near the final; it was a train wreck of a class.
Dr. Kolarkar was great at lecturing. His tests, on the other hand, were insanely difficult. Throughout the year, the majority of the class had failing grades in the class. During the final grading week, our grades were adjusted. His class brought an insane amount of stress to his students. He seems like a great man, but I would not take his class.
He struggles with english. Smart guy but not proficient in speaking and it gets in the way. Even his scripted videos are full of incomplete sentences, missing subjects, and tenses that make certain problems unsolvable without the realization that he doesn't know the difference between past, present and future tense.
