Makes you work, but makes you learn
Do not take this professor unless you are quite proficient in chemistry and will be taking additional chemistry courses. She is quite demanding and not very good at explaining material. If you only need one chemistry course choose another teacher.
Extremely hard and demanding. She is a very intelligent woman, but she can be unclear and disrespectful towards students. I am not sure of the eact drop out percentage, but it has to be more than half. Pick someone other rhen her.
SHe is awsome
Gets all of her test questions from the ACS Gen. Chem test banc
She is an excellent teacher. She demands 110% from her students at all times. She seems to be harder on the women in her classes. Don't take her unless you have a strong chemistry backgraound. I learned alot in her class she is perfect for those going on to higher levels of chemistry and preparing for careers in medicine or pharmacy.
Very smart lady, knows chemistry like the back of her hand but as far as having a personal interest in teaching you there is none. She is a person that would be perfect in a research field but not in the education one. Unless you're have a strong background in chemistry don't take her.
SHE IS VERY HELPFUL.SHE ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT EVERY BODY GET WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT.
She is an extremely HARD teacher. She wants you to learn but learn at her level. Her notes for the class sucks! Her test are awful and there are a lot of stuff on that was never explained or in the book. Good Luck if you take her b/c you are going to need it. Be read for a lot of studying and reading.
Animated lectures (does not rely on powerpoint from the book). Hands-on examples. Gives plenty of opportunities to ask/answer questions. Overall a great prof.
she is an amzzing teacher and i love her soo much.. she is my amito... all of yall should take her cuz shes very knowledgable!!!! i love her like crazy... she is always willing ot help.. TAKE HER ULL LEARN A LOT
I love Mrs. El-Ashmawy outside of class, but inside the classroom she is very intimidating. This was the only class that I have ever dropped because I knew I would be making a C, at best. If you love chemistry, take her. She would be fabulous for those who actually enjoy the subject...I did not. Don't let her fool you, though. She's a softy!
She is very hard that makes her students worrying when they want to show their idea...
She loves chemistry and her students. She makes you learn, this is not a class you can show up and get an A. She works on her whiteboard to give visual models of the subject. Study a little every week, drop by her office, take good notes, and ask questions. If you want an A it's not hard to get, but she won't give it to you. You must earn it.
WARNING ! WARNING ! WARNING! SCARY LADY!
What a WONDERFUL professor!! Extremely intelligent lady..... Now, the material is not easy and can be overwhelming, however she is more than willing to help!! Her teaching methods are terrific...and she keeps you smiling!! You have to work hard for a good grade but after all this is a Chemistry class......highly recommended
she is hard but if you study... test are average... she is very exciting in class and very clear on what she teaches... she is wonderful teacher and i would recommend her to anyone that is not Great at chemistry
She is great
She knows it, but if you don't, or are having difficulty, she's pretty nasty. Exams are very difficult - and only 25 questions. Miss three and you've blown it. Her mood swings are incredible.
AWESOME TEACHER,HER TESTS ARE REALLY HARD THOUGH BUT SHES REALLY NICE
shes very funny n friendly. she makes the materials become much more understandable, unforgettable and interesting. I advise anyone who needs Chem1412 take her class. But be serious to her tests. They arent easy. (well, its chem 1412, right?)But I was sill able to make an a in her class. You will certainly have a nice time in class!Enjoy!!!
DR. El-Ashmawy: love ya!! best teacher ever... Chemistry is hard!!! but she is the best, not easy but worth it
She is super hard! and so are her tests!! it's ridiculous!!
Can't say enough about this woman's energy and excitment levels. She is a little off her rocker too, but it makes her class fun. Highly recomend her for an etertaining semster. Take her for lab too. Tests were pretty involved, but not too bad if you keep up with the class, I didn't study all that much and made Bs on her tests. She's sarcastic too.
SHE IS THE WORST prof. i have ever had. she is extremly hard. and makes fun of u if u ask a question. only geeks think she is funny when she insults them. i had all A's before her and she gave me a C. half of my class was to scared to ask questions b/c she embarrasses u when u do.
Her class is tough but i learned so much more from it compared to other students in other classes. She is extremely passionate about chemistry and it ends up rubbing off on you in the end. I would recommend her to everyone. Just be prepared to work hard and learn.
She is very passionate and knowledgeable about chemistry. Be prepared to work hard. Her tests are hard but not impossible. I personally did not like her teaching style as it was too unorganized and did not follow the book.
I had General Chemistry I with her. she's one of the most knowledgeable professors in this College. Her lectures are very clear and interesting. I learned alot from her class. Her tests are not easy! If you are just looking for a b.s class and easy A,dont take her! If you REAlly want to learn chemistry,I highly recommend her to u!Highly recommended
I LOVED this class. It is the only class this semester that I looked forward to going to every time. She is very helpful and encourages confidence. She loves when you contradict her if she's made a mistake. So much fun!Best teacher I've had.Recommend her for lab&lecture!I failed chem tests in high school and made a's in her class!
i took her for Chem 1411 and, and i had fun. great professor, fun class, explains everything well, but her tests are hard. u really have to study to make an A. it is not a blow off class.
Dr. El-Ashmawy is one of the best professors I've ever encountered. Her passion and knowledge for the subject inspire me. With that being said, she's not the easiest teacher-so if you want an easy A look elsewhere. However, if you want quality education with lots of laughter she's the one! It's a bit of work, but I thoroughly enjoyed her class!
great professor, best professor for CHEM. Chem is not a blow off class, gotta work hard and u will get an A. Attendance is a must
She is very hard, but you can pass. Study, study, study!
Nice teacher and funny, but test are nothing like what she tells you. good for people who want to major in this
Dont take this teacher unless u want to major in this stuff. HARD TEACHER
I took professor El-Ashmawy for 1411 & 1412 and she is the best professor I've ever had. She teaches everything thoroughly. She loves for you to participate in class and ask questions. She's very nice and helpful. However her tests are hard and challenging. She bases some questions of her tests from American Chemical Society.
She was VERY helpful and nice. I would diffently take her for chem 1412, but sadly shes not gonna be teaching. She is very tough and you have to pay attention in class a lot or YOU WILL get lost. Her tests are very hard but she will give you partial credit. She gives out a couple of exxtra credits. Overrall great teach but hard class.
Loved her class. One of the few professors I've had who actually made it fun to go to class. She jokes a lot but is also serious about you paying attention and learning, so if you're one that needs someone telling you that you're great when you aren't she's not the one for that. But she is always willing to help especially during her office hours.
She is the BEST teacher!! I HATED Chemistry before taking her, but was required to take the course for my major. She completely changed my view of Chemistry and by the end of the semester I was VERY happy I took the class. Be prepared, pay attention and show her you care and she'll make sure you make a good grade. Slack off and you're toast!!
Chemistry is fun. love to work with chemicals until I become unlucky by taking this class with this professor. Extremely hard. 20-25 questions worth 5 points each missed some you end up c or less. cant see the scantron while she review the exam. no extra credit, no curving of the points. got a rude attitude. Just not worth the effort
Crazy just read last two comments I don't think they took her class. She does offer EC, in fact gives partial credit for answers wrong on test if you show your work and have the concept. Class is hard and you need to study a lot as with any Chemistry class. 4 Exams, comprehensive final replaces lowest test grade. Online work and homework easy A
Online homework, recitation homework, 3 exams and a final exam for this class. The reciataion assignments are easy they help bring up your grade a lot. The online homework is sometimes challenging and sometimes easy. Her tests are very hard. They defintely require a lot of studying. She explains concepts so that they are easier to understand
Shes an awesome teacher! i was nervous about taking chem, but i did great in her class! very hands on and helpful
Worst chem teacher ever!, she does NOT explain material clearly and her test are worst, please avoid her class!
Best professor ever. makes weird faces when thinking about question you asked her. not because u asked a stupid question, but because she wants to answer you in a way u can understand. you need to study study study... it is a must. TAKE HER IF YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE NOT BEING SPOILT!
SHE IS INTENSE! obsessed with chemistry! She is extremely smart, but so smart that its almost impossible to keep up with her! tons of homework! and most of it is pointless! tests are super hard. try and get a different teacher if you are needing a good grade && want to have a life outside of school. this class blows.
Took her for Summer General Chemistry I. She is a fantastic professor, as far as teaching and genuinly helping her students succeed she does an OUTSTANDING job
Took 1405 & loved it; switched to sci major & took her for 1411 & 1412. Expects a lot from her students, but wants them to succeed. Available office hrs if you need help. Tests are hard, but offers partial credit if you show work on your scratch paper & show you are trying to learn. Xtra cred options. I highly recommend if you truly want to learn!!
Knows her stuff and really wants you to be excited about it! REALLY difficult unless you have taken some sort of chemistry class prior to hers. Kind of makes you feel like you should already know some of the material. Tests are tricky, but if you are willing to give ALL of your time to this ONE class, you would do fine.
EXCELLENT professor. She def knows her stuff, plus she is so clear in the material she gives. Also, gives extra credit. NOT an easy class, but if the effort is being put on, she worth taken it with.
Her love for chemistry is contagious and you can tell she loves to teach the subject! But her class is super hard! Her exams require you to think and next thing you know time has ran out. Attending every class is highly recommended because she covers a lot!! Overall her class is amazing but is not an easy A to get at all
AMAZING teacher! This is NOT an easy class. It is Chemistry! To the previous person who was "given" a C, you EARNED your grade. Professor El-Ashmawy is very approachable and wants her students to succeed. Heaven forbid a professor jokes with her students. Anyone who complains about her is going to have a hard time in the real world.Get a backbone.
She is a awful professor, she is awful at explaining things, and makes fun of you for asking questions. I spent more time on studying for her class more then I did all my other 5 classes combined, and still only got a C-, her test are only 25 questions and are very hard.I do not recommend her at all, take another professor.
This class is incredibly difficult, but Dr. El-Ashmawy makes it very fun and interesting. You will actually need to study, study, study if you plan to make an A in this course. She's always available during office hours and responds to emails quickly. She's quirky too, so if that's not your thing, take someone else. Overall, great class! :)
I love Dr. El-Ashmawy! She worked so hard to get me to understand the material. It's obvious she loves her job and chemistry. If she knows you are trying she will help you as much as she can. I wish I needed another Chem class so she could teach me again! It's amazing all the knowledge she has swimming around in her head. She's just fascinating!
Best professor I have ever had! I took her for chem 2 and learned everything there is to know in that class because of her.
Helpful, excellent explanations, willing to review difficult concepts. I wasn't sure I wd pass chem at all until I took her class. It's still hard, of course, you have to read, study & do the labs. She is prompt answring email keeps her ofc hrs.
She is the best professor I have had in college so far and I am a junior at UTD now. I would not recommend this class to any slackers but if you want to learn the material I would take her. You will not regret it.
Incredible teacher, again, people, you're in college, therefore it'll be college level work. Chemistry is going to be hard anywhere, but since it is mandatory I strongly recommend this professor. My favorite professor yet
GREATEST TEACHER EVER!! NOT AN EASY CLASS, BUT SHE WILL HELP AS MUCH AS YOU WILL ALLOW HER. IF YOU SHOW INTEREST IN THE MATERIAL, SHE WILL SHOW INTEREST IN YOU. HER EXPLANATIONS ARE PHENOMENAL AND WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS!!
Dr. El-Ashmawy is the best prof I have ever had after 4 years here. Her class is rigorous and concept-focused, so you actually learn *why* stuff works, not just how. She's brilliant, hilarious, and infinitely kind; she has high standards that she goes out of her way to help you meet. She's an amazing person and an excellent teacher. Take her class!
She should be teaching a more advanced class. She gives way too much unnecessary detail and tells you WAY more than what is required for the class. It makes the tests EXTREMELY hard because you literally have no idea what is important and what is irrelevant. She makes you feel dumb when you ask a question, embarrassing you in front of everyone.
She's HARD! HARD!! You must keep up outside of class to know what's going on inside of class. Our class was very quiet and she hated that the class participation was so low. She provides very helpful youtube videos, and during her office hours her door is always open. She will help you as much as you need and she's great at explaining concepts.
I took professor El-Ashmawy for CHEM 1411 and she was incredible. That has all changed in CHEM 1412. She doesn't teach in class and expects you to already know the material beforehand. If you don't know it then it's your fault and she doesn't explain. She constantly blames failures on you, even though you studied and don't understand the material.
She is too hard, more work for this class than any other hard classes you may have, barely teaches the math part in class, expects you to know everything on your own. too many assignments and too much online homework and groups assigned extra work to do rather than a regular class. Dont take her unless you can devote the whole semester to her class
Lives up 2 the hype. Brilliant woman, gifted teacher. You will learn but it's HARD. Flipped class, b ready 2 learn on yr own time, tons of content. Videos, text, online HW, recitation, must participate in class. Team based learning - I got lucky with mine but u never know. For easy A, look elsewhere. To learn chem, take her. GO TO HER OFFICE HRS!
Professor El-Ashmawy is a kind person and she wants you to understand the material. However, the class was "flipped" where you learn everything outside of class via the text and her videos on Blackboard. This meant that lectures were rare, instead you do board races each class with the team that you have been grouped into.
This class was hard. It's flipped which she does state that but literally you're teaching yourself and then getting tested on it. It would've been better just to take this course online. She helps if you have questions but this class is way too hard. Too much homework! It's hard to take other classes with this class because it takes a lot of time.
An absolutely excellent professor. Not necessarily an easy class, but if you really want to learn chemistry, this is your professor. Lecture videos are extremely helpful, attendance is MANDATORY for success, class is very collaborative and a bit competitive, homework isn't much of a burden. I highly, highly recommend that you take this professor.
The class is flip-taught, which means you are teaching yourself, and she's mostly there to answer questions. The class is split into teams, and you are graded on very minor things, such as how much you communicated with your team outside of class. There are many quizzes, and you may have as little as two days to learn everything you need to know.
My first time taking chemistry and easily the hardest class I've taken in college so far. I didn't know her class was a flip-class (self teaching) when I registered. Its so much harder than I thought it was. Hard to understand course material when yourself is the teacher & have questions on material. Would not take again.
BE WARNED! This is self teaching chemistry. This is a condescending professor with a negative attitude at times. Chemistry is a very cool subject but you would be better off taking this online. That being said she makes its easy to pass if you can keep up with the strict hw and quiz deadlines. Definitely a weed out class. Choose another professor!
Whatever you do, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Especially if chemistry is not your strong suit. She runs a flipped class room, so you have to read all of the chapters, watch her videos, and fill out study guides every week, every week you're tested on the assigned chapters. The tests HARDLY follow the textbook chapters, so you better know it word 4 word.
She knows a lot about chemistry and emphasizes the importance of not just knowing how to work a problem but the concept behind it. She is hard and you must work hard for a good grade, but is pretty lenient with grading. People who complain about her simply don't take advantage of all the resources out there and are lazy
She gets hella mad if you use your notes on team activities or even think about using your notes. Make sure to know everything before you walk into class because apparently you have to have everything memorized before walking in or the world ends
Dr. Ashmawy is passionate about what she does, and it shows. This by far was one of the hardest courses I've taken. As others have mentioned her course is a "flipped course." Essentially there is a lot of self learning. By the end of the semester our class was left with about ten students.
shes Hard and might make you cry a little or make you feel bad or dumb or embarrassed if you dont know the answer but in the end shell give u the knowledge u need for chemistry.. class definitely more for extroverts and those comfortable with working w other people.. she forces u to step out of ur bubble. Also she doesnt lecture u have to prepa
I would not recommended her if you are planning to learn anything
Your grade will greatly be impacted based on your teams performance. Group activities are weighted as much as final and semester exams
She makes you really work for your grade but at the end you will really learn and ready for the ACS
It's a flipped class so you have to teach yourself most of the material.
El-Ashmawy is a wonderful professor. The course requires a lot of work on the front end (flipped class) and it can depend a lot on good teammates, but she knows her stuff, is a clear grader, funny, and helps students if they try. Do NOT expect to breeze through this class unless chemistry is second-nature to you. Still, I enjoyed it a lot.
Professor El-Ashmawy does TEAM Based Learning in class, and her lectures are through videos on which she uploads for you to see OUTSIDE of class. In short, if your teammates aren't prepared/not the brightest then you're not gonna get a A. All you do in class are the TEAM based activities, and your grade depends on it. HW is online. Never again.
THIS IS A FLIPPED CLASS ROOM! Meaning she doesnt lecture at all in class. EVERYTHING is online. condescendin. You will do study guides based on the chapter youre going over and then have a quiz the second you get to class. THEN she gives feedback. Which isnt helpful bc your grade has been taken. Would never take again. Hardest C Ive ever made.
Please dont take her, I had to drop her class becaue it was a flipped class meaning you have to teach yourself at home or in th libaray. Her help wasnt jealous either, the quizzes are useless, her notes online are dumb cant understand anything. The group base learning was hard never understood anything in this class.
it was a flipped class meaning you had to teach yourself the entire course, professors our supposed to teach you, not the other way around. don't take her for anything.
This class you'll either love or hate-no in between. If you are diligent and bright you'll appreciate at the end this type of flipped learning/no lectures and method of group work. If you are just a lazy student expecting to get a good grade with little effort, it will bite you hard. Just depends what type of student you are
This is a flipped classroom. Lectures consist of answering questions in your assigned group and also working on worksheets. If you read your textbook, watch lecture videos and complete your homework outside of class you will have no problem with this class. I recommend making friends with your group members and studying with them. Great professor.
She is so funny I enjoyed her class so much. I did well on tests what hurt my grade was the homework assignments. The mastering chemistry was by far the worst part of the class. Have to study for test or you won't do well. attendance is a grade. She's very sarcastic but so funny interacts a lot with the class.
Shes really nice and funny in class but she can be super extra. I didnt know what the heck was going on 90% of the time and then COVID-19 happened. Seemed like she added more and more assignments since moving online. Also the mastering chemistry homework was a pain. I recommend choosing a different professor if you can.
By far the hardest course I have taken. Its definitely a weed out class. Prof KNOWS her stuff but probably shouldnt be teaching an intro class. She is not strong at simplifying concepts. You NEED algebra before this class and note there is MORE than the recommended 3 hw/week. Class would be best if split into two semesters to have time to learn it.
Expect to get a workload as if you have nothing else going on in life including other classes. Also, the deadlines are so close together that youll spend more time just getting the work done than actually learning anything. This is a flipped class which is disappointing because you need lectures to understand chemistry.
This professor is by far the most unprofessional I have had. For starters the canvas grades are not even set up right and add up to be 110% this should have been taken care of at the start of the course. Next she offers the Midterm and the Final as our two tests and lets canvas grade your FRQ questions. If I was you I would pick anyone but her!
Drop unclear with grading posts rubrics only sometimes, threatened to report class to the dean for googling an n value ;D honorlock, tht pearson tax included ;(
Great professor. Learning from Amina and taking her courses are what inspired me to pursue a career in Chemistry and STEM. Would absolutely take her courses again. The material may be difficult, but she is not! Thank you Amina!
I love Professor El-Ashmawy, I would take her classes again if she taught other courses. Loved how she explained everything, seems very passionate about chemistry and loves to see her students succeed. Challenging but goes above and beyond to explain material, be available to meet and takes mess ups on her end well.
Chemistry IS math so have your highschool fractions & percentages down. A good lab teacher will really make a difference if taking this professor for lecture. You must read the textbk, watch videos, do extra credit, all hw, show up, do recitations (ie more hw), re-work missed hw or recitations to really know the material to pass this class.
She's a nice lady, but one of the worst professors I've ever had. Grade book in canvas was never set up correctly so whatever you saw was not accurate. Expected you to do the homework on time, if not you got a zero automatically. The 3rd party website she used for homework would also count correct answers wrong and you cant get her to change it.
While El-Ashmawy may be amazing at teaching and really into chemistry, the amount of work given was ridiculous. In my 2 years of community college, I've never had a class with this sheer amount of assignments. There's literally 7-12 EACH WEEK! Don't take this class if you're taking any others. Had to switch teachers.
Dr. Ashmawy was one tough Professor! Overall, she's a great person, funny, and wants you to really learn Chemistry. However, for an intro class it's a lot! 'd advise not taking any other class-if possible, and be sure to read nightly, do all of your assignments ON TIME, and try to NEVER miss a class.
Took this class as a hybrid. lecture once a week which wasnt lecture it was just her answering our questions. There is a ton of work and the reading is long. Its hard too learn and keep up with everything. The due dates are all close. 3 tests and a comprehensive final exam. Grade on canvas does not reflect your actual grade which is confusing.
Sweetest professor. Like most science courses, you have lots of work. However, she goes above and beyond to make sure you are understanding and succeeding. She responds to emails quickly, gives extra credit, and really takes the time to make sure the class is on the right page. Chemistry is a lot of work - but she makes it way easier.
Dr. El-Ashmawy is a great professor, but she's not for everyone. She teaches a hybrid class which means you will be in class for one day a week, and in my case, I had a lab an hour after for about 3-4 hours. She has a lot of online resources that you should use, especially the videos, which were extremely helpful. Go to class and you will pass.
I really disliked this class. Professor was very passionate about Chemistry but didn't really help all that much. Her recitations are ten times harder than what she lectures and while she is a nice person the course work is honestly too much. She calls on random people every class and makes them feel dumb when they don't know the answer.
She is so engaging and fun while teaching in depth concepts! She's not shy by any means, but confident and knowing and very dedicated to chemistry.
Engaging lectures, but the workload is quite intense. While the professor is dedicated, the 3rd party homework site can be tricky. Use unstuck study and group study to stay on top of it.
Avoid at all costs. El Ashmaway is not a good prof. She makes you feel dumb for not knowing what she didn't teach. You must read the textbook to keep up. She takes the entire class to get through two problems, and she doesn't even really lecture over it, so you're confused half the time. Gets easily distracted, and recitations are poorly formatted
The teacher's lectures were very disorganized. She's a disorganized person overall leaving us very confused on what we're learning in class so we're left to rely heavily on the text book. Don't take this class, there are better professors.
MUST READ!!!!!!! I would never take a class from this professor again!! She's okay for the most part, but had class favorites that could do no wrong. Had an interaction with her one-on-one and was told that I would be unsuccessful in life after getting an A in her class. Try to get on her good side if you are taking her class, is all I gotta say.
She will finish her entire lecture just by solving one numerical and makes you feel dumb for the stupid reasons I won't recommend this professor if you really wanna learn something
