ugggggh
Very difficult class with difficult subject matter, but he is more than willing to do what it takes to help you do well.
amir is the man. he's tough but if you work hard you'll do well.
Left this class with a great deal of knowledge. Great professor!
He is a really nice guy; not a difficult class if you do all the work.

Go to class and you will be fine.Amir is awesome.
go to class and it will be fine- ask questions (discussion section or TA office hours) to not fall behind on stuff you don't get
Easiest class I've ever taken.
He's awesome... If the class tries, then he gives a whole bunch of extra points at the end of the semester. He really hooks you up!

Amir is the man...he hooks it up at the end of the semester.
Amir is the best instructor I have had...ever! Expects a lot but gives just as much. If you want a challenging class that you can succeed in, take this one.
Great teacher, tough material
Amir was/is an excellent professor. I graduated 5 years ago and he is one of the few professors I remember.
must take... amir is the man, he is out to help the kids
Good professor and really dedicated to the subject, but could use an anger management course.
Easy. No excuse for doing poorly.
The best teacher I have ever had at UMass by far! He is brilliant, dedicated, serious, more than fair, has great political views and inspiring! By far the best stats teacher on campus. If all teachers were more like him, this school would be amazing.
One of the Best!!! Guy is truly dedicated and goes out of his way to help people out. Actually makes u understand what your doing instead of crunching out numbers.
The devil himself! If lucifer were to attempt to ruin college students lives, he could have found no better way. He likes things his way or you're wrong. Be precise, exact, and a machine. Then, and only then, will you do well.
He is the reincarnation of Napoleon himself. Short and super aggressive and energetic... He knows his crap though and is great at explaining the subject...
Took the class cuz I had to, attended every one because Amir is just plan charismatic. Great teacher, REALLY wants you to learn, and curves it all at the end!!! As long as you show up & put in the effort, you will pass.
Amir is a stats superstar and thats all i have to say.
Amir is a great guy. Class is very demanding. But as long as you work as hard as you can he will respect your efforts and give you a more than fair grade.
people always say a bunch of crap about how much amir cares about his students, and he does. but the bottom line is that all you do in this course is memorize paragraphs to spit back out, and if change a single letter of these phrases, you will lose full credit for the question.
Amir is NOT a great guy. he makes students worry about their grades all semster and then changes everything around at the very end. the exams are extremely hard and if you don't write down exactly what he wants, you get full credit off. don't wrory too much about grades but try your best.
Amir is a great professor. He really wants his students to learn and tries very hard to make material clear. The class is hard but he is definatly dedicated to help out any student who needs it.
Best math teacher i've ever had. He cares about his students more than any educator i've ever met in all my years. Material is somewhat hard, but he succeeds in making you understand. Attendance is mandatory, quizzes in discussions every friday. Put in effort and you'll reap the benefits.
this class is not easy, but amir is awesome. he truly cares about his students and loves the material. a lot of work, but he explains everything clearly and is willing to answer questions in or out of class.
Class is difficult, but Amir is an awesome man. He truly cares about you doing well, and wants you to care more about understanding the material then actual grades. As long as the effort is put forth, you will do fine. Use extra help, go to discussions and class, and go to reviews.
NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS JUST MEMORIZE ALL THE ASSUMPTIONS AND REST OF THE STUFF HE TELLS YOU TO SAY. you dont need to understand, just spit out what he wants to hear. but truly, he is the most caring teacher ive seen since high school.
PROS: This is how teachers should be. Period. Great man in general. CONS: Grading is extremely harsh, both in-class and take-homes are a PAIN. General mayhem & destruction. Attedance is a must, as is extra-help.
Amir once told the class, "Teaching is a friendship across generations," and with him, it's true. He's a fabulous teacher, because he cares and because he teaches clearly. He really makes you earn your own success in the class with attendance, take-home quizzes, etc...so work hard, listen to him, and you'll be rewarded.

He brought his niece into class...he yells and screams, and his BMW he parks like an **** right infront of mahar and the license plate says AMIRAN. He has the Napoleon syndrome where he is small like a dwarf but thinks he is more respected because he makes an ass of people. Thing is he is the ASS.
Not very interesting
This class is difficult and requires perfect attendence and a considerable amount of time. He is a really good teacher, very clear and cares about his students who are putting in an honest effort..for those who arent willing to do the work..dont take this class
this guy is the man. hes awesome if he sees that you are really trying. i think hes the best professor at umass. dont take this class if you dont want to do lots of work.
Amir is a great professor who actualy cares for his students. This class is very demanding so if you are not willing to work very hard, don't bother. Attendance is a must in lecture as well as the discussions. This class is only difficult if you try to coast by.
Very boring, class is a waste of time, uses more time to talk about how important it is for him that you learn than to actually teach
amir is probably in my top 2 for professors. he truly cares about what he does and you dont see that often. while it is a hard class & attendence is required, you will actually learn something. in my 4 semesters here this is the first time i can say that i actually learned and can understand. he is a great professor.
Spends a lot of time trying to convince you that he's your best friend, but at the same time, he's always dissapointed in you and makes you think you're going to fail the whole semester. Before the final, when everybody thinks their failing the class, he tries to make himself look glorious by scaling grades left and right on quizzes, hw, and exams.
What an amazing prof. He really cares about his students. The class is not easy, don't expect to get by without working hard. He will take care of you if he sees you in lecture everyday & you go to his office hours. By far, the BEST prof at UMass.
Amir cares very much about his students succeeding! Anyone who rates this prof. negatively is just lazy and expects a cake walk through college.Yeah this class was difficult but with good attendence and paying attention you will be rewarded!Plus at the end of the class he drops your lowest grades and counts your best ones twice!Adds points to tests
He makes himself seem like he is really nice but then he gets all disapointed if the class isnt able to answer a question or if you do poorly on the exam. the average for the midterm was a 58 and he took basically 20 minutes just telling us how disapointed he was. he's very hypocritical with alot of the things he says/does.
Will take off points if you write down the word the instead of the word a. Catch my drift here? Overall good professor, but acts like a drama queen when he doesnt have absolute worshipping. Change your profile pic dude
HE IS NOT A GOOD TEACHER
His midterm was the hardest exam I have ever taken. Just learn the assumptions and the interpretations and know when to use them and you will be fine. At the end of the course he does all this fancy dropping and adding in your best score stuff to make you think hes helping you out. But if youve done well on the THQ and stuff then it doesnt help u
This class is a hard class if you don't go to class. You have to go to class and discussion every week to learn. Take good notes and you need to do what he says for the tests perfectly. The midterm is hard, but the final will be fine if you pay attention in class.
By far the worst class I have taken at UMass. Amir pontificates about life lessons, then talks about his son and occasionally gets to the material. Worst of all, is he expects you to go to EVERY class. God be with if you are one of the poor souls who have to take this class.
By far the hardest class i have ever taken, I worked my ass off and escaped barely. The midterm will kick you in places you didnt know existed. Good luck, you'll need it
Very strict, hard material and no leeway. You are probably required to take the course, so my recommendation is to attend every class even though you fall asleep so you can sign the attendance sheet. Go in for help when you need it because there will be no favors later on. Get into a study group so you can learn from eachother. Best of luck.
so condescending, so boring, so vague. If there is anyway you can escape his class -- do it
Tough class, but you'll be proud of yourself at the end. Go to class, and the discussions are key. I fyou do your work, he'll reward you in the end.
Definitely one of the hardest classes you'll take. Nice guy, but makes you work for your grade (and then some). Try to do well on your first exam b/c everyone else does poorly. He later comes up with this crazy scaling system b/c everyone does that bad. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. If you don't go to the lecture and discussions, you're asking for an F.
He will treat you like a child, give you conflicting instructions, and waste your time. It is easy to get a good grade if you pay attention in discussion and do the work. Good grade or bad, you will learn nothing. The class is a joke.
Very good teacher, go to every class, and you can do fine, hard test but he is very helpful
Amir really tries to help but he is just abrasive by nature. You have to do all of the work and attend most of the classes to do well. No way out of this class so good luck!
He is an excellent professor, but you won't do well if you are a fool/poorly motivated. However, he spends as much time as he can trying to help you understand a tough subject. I will say he is probably the best one I've had here. Do the work, and you'll be fine.
God help you!
This guy sucks, it unfortunate that he is the only one who teaches this subject, if you can avoid, he will destroy your GPA
I can't understand why so many people have something bad to say about Amir. He's one of the only professors who truly cares if you're learning and understanding the material. It's not the easiest class but go to class and discussion and you will be fine. He helps you out with grades in the end. Honestly, it's no where near as bad as everyone says.
Easy class if you know what the TA's and Amir are looking for on homework, exams, etc. Going to class is a MUST for knowing the material, as Amir hardly ever uses the textbook.
Its a hard class up until the midterm. By that time you'll know exactly what he expects. All the work will be burned into your brain from so much practice it'll be a breeze. Success for this class includes: going to TA office hours (Nikki is the best), do all your work(essential if you want the scale to help), and make it to discussion every time.
One of the best Professors in SOM. Go to TA office hours, do the work, go to class and discussion and have a huge folder ready for all the handouts. They'll be helpful for take home quizzes and exams. If you do this, you'll pass. No need to be scared. He's acts tough but he's really a genuinely caring person.
Do good on the first few homeworks, quizs and take homes quizs b.c they are used as a curve in the end. He is a helpful teacher - listen to everything he says word for word b.c he only accepts his way. The class is alot of work up to the midterm and then gets easier.
Amir is the man. Go to class, there is a quiz every week in discussion (after the first one they get easier) so dont miss discussions. He is very generous when it comes to a curve, but you need to go to class to learn the material.
Exemplary. Passionate about both the subject matter and teaching it. Very dynamic teaching style, but definitely a stickler for doing work a certain way, so watch for that. As others have said, it's very important to go the class, and the discussions.
He really wants everyone to learn. The class is not that hard as long as you go to the class and discussion to know what he is looking for. He is more than generous with the points he gives out at the end of the semester, too. I think he is one of the better professors I have had here.
Amir wants people to understand what he teaches and that's what matters. He is very understanding and teaches you what you need to know. Make sure to attend all of his lectures, take good notes and go to dicussions. Get help from your TA or Amir himself. Really put the time into this course and you should be golden. =)

He comes off as intimidating but is really one of the nicest guys. It's not really that hard, you just have to make sure to basically use his words in the explanations on the exam. TA's are also very helpful
Some people find him very difficult, but if you go to class every single day and apply the effort you will do fine.
Amir is amazing prof! He really wants his students to learn and do well. It is alot of work but it's possible if you go to every class and discussions are extremely helpful, his TA's are great. Amir has a great sense of humor!!!
Though he calls himself a "drill sergeant", he really wants his students to learn the material. Just be sure to know his wording inside out and you should do fine. Don't be intimidated by other people in this thread... it's definitely doable to get an A.
Avoid him
Amir comes off as a tough guy who is a really hard professor but if you go to class and discussion you'll be fine. He's a stickler for correct wording so make sure you know it in and out. He also drops lowest grades and doubles highest ones at the end, which helped me get an A without trying to hard and doing poorly on the first exam
Takes attendance in 400 person lecture. He requires everyone buy a textbook that you don't need (his terms are different and the assumptions that the whole class is based around are nowhere to be found). We use a $70 homework program "Aplia" which is useless because you get MORE out of actually writing problems and learning the Z and T charts.
People just say they like Amir because he scales his class so much, so they feel like they're closer to him because he's helping them out. In reality, the class is a waste of time. You won't learn anything but how to regurgitate information you don't understand. He's a fine person, but probably one of the worst professors I've ever met. In my life.
Just do well on the take home quizzes and aplia hw and quizzes so you can still manage to pull off at least a B will all the scaling even if you bomb the midterm and final. Don't be intimidated in the beginning. He get much more HUMAN 2nd hal of the semester.
the best professor at UMass by far. Easy class if you do the take home quizzes, go to discussions, and have some common sense. Not doing well on the midterm you can still get an A, don't buy the book.
Wants the best for his students! He is a stickler so that you understand the material and actually learn the material. Make sure you do well on the HW and Take Home Quiz's!
Not a good teacher
He is a nice guy but you will find him annoying becasue of his teaching style-he wants everything done and written his way otherwise it is minus 20 points. Class was not helpful but go to discussion, the TAs know the class is hard and help explain the concepts. Do we on you take home test and Aplia becasuse you probably wont do well on the exams.
He is a great professor, and is probably about as passionate a guy about teaching as you'll find...Class is somewhat difficult, as people have said if you do things the way he teaches you in class then youll do fine..He gives a nice scale at the end.
I would highly recommend finding another professor. He makes class extremely difficult when it does not have to be. He makes the tests so hard that for certain big questions nobody knows the answer for sure, and he takes off lots of points if your answer is not word for word what he wants. He scales at the end of every class bc so many ppl fail.
The class isn't hard, he tells you what's on the exam and you just have to make sure you get the wording correct, if he took points off it's because you were wrong. Period. Quizzes and Aplias are easy. Amir is a credit to the university and it's a shame umass is letting him go and treating him so poorly after 21 yrs of commitment.
He is truly one of the best professors I have had at Umass. He really cares about helping his students learn and makes sure that they understand the material. He's not as hard as everyone says. As long as you do your part correctly, you'll get a good grade. Umass should be firing the bad professors and keeping the good ones. Very nice professor. :)
Amir was a drill sergeant but in a good way. Thats the only way you can learn this stuff. He was a credit to the school and was fired because of politics not because of quality. If you are out there Amir, get back on the horse and find another college full of kids who need your help. Best of luck, you were a credit to the school and will be missed
SAVE AMIR! Amir go get em at a college that can handle doing a bit of work to EARN a grade. Great prof and really passionate! True and sincere! great guy and Umass will be worse without him.
I took this class online with him and found it to be extremely difficult. Aplia and homeworks were easy enough by putting it a lot of work but exams were NOTHING like weekly quizzes and homework assignments. I spent HOURS a week doing work for this class and somehow failed both the midterm and final. :-(
Great teacher. He really cared about all his students understanding the material.
Why does this guy look like the guy from Cake Boss?? He could probably be in the Godfather and get away with it. However, pretty good teacher but there's a good amount of work and tests are tricky. Dresses like a GQ star and only buys the best suits.
Finop 250 was probably one of the most difficult classes I've taken, but Amir was a great professor and was eager to help you out if you asked. If you put in the work, you earned a good grade. He will be missed.
I took the summer online course. It was not easy. A lot of work to complete in 10 weeks. Amir was helpful in answer questions but some of his notes where confusing. Ask questions if not sure on something. He does make errors.
I'm thoroughly confused by all the positive comments, I honestly feel like he told one of his classes he'd give extra credit for good ratings. He is easily the worst professor I've ever had, gave hours of work, hard exams, and never explained anything. I'm generally an A student and the only reason I passed the class was because of my TA.
Amazing teacher who loved the subject. Very helpful and friendly. Loved him!
This professor teaches Stats for Babson College now and he is a veryyyy hard teacher/grader. The entire class failed one of his exams and he insists that the fault lies with the students!! He can make some things easy to understand, but overall its either you complete assignments/tests his way or no way.
Teaches at babson, of 99 students highest midterm grade was 80 avg 43, he only dropped it because department head forced him to. guy has office hours 30 mins between his 2 classes which he uses to go back and get prepared and NEVER comes in except on days he teaches and thus isn't available for help
Took stats with him. EXTREMELY hard. Class average on first exam was a 40. He said we didn't try hard enough and refused to look into it. The highest grade was a 60!!!! Not to mention the exam was SIX hours long. I would not take him again. He doesn't care if students learn the material and is terrible at teaching it.
had to take his class 3 times, (major required it) Hated it. Needed to spend hours with the TAs to make sense of the lectures. The worst was his test set up, weekly quizzes get 10/10, then week after add/drop ends a midterm that most of the class fails. Every other class gave midterms a week before add/drop ends.
Many people will complain about the toughness, but honestly if you actually put in the effort rather than complaints, you will do well. Do all homeworks, ask questions, show that you care about the material and all is good
Amir was a great professor overall. His tests were directly based on the homework and the problems we did in class. Would definitely recommend.
Stats140 with Amir was somewhat easy and I felt like I learned a lot. However, some of the things he said and did were a little off-putting. I wouldn't take the class for him, but rather for the material. The tests are based off from the written homework, but they also include some multiple choice problems which you can't entirely prepare for.
