Took this a year ago. Really, really enjoyed the treatment of database concepts as well as SQL; very clear, well structured. She's really good. Attempted project in the Oracle development environment, however, didn't go well at all; and the assistant sucked as well. By the time I decided to switch to a different environment, we were out of time.

Dr. Chin is the best teacher for this class. Took 5 week summer session. Got a B, only because the FINAL is a departmental exam and not her own. She makes assignments fun and interesting.. Loved working the website assignment. Very helpful. Responds quick to emails
Dr. Chin is very knowledgeable about Information Systems, but you can tell she is not interested in teaching this class. Her lectures are just the textbook publisher's Power Point slides, and she does little more than read them to you. She does not take attendance, and tests are basically book definitions. Many students just came to test days.
Shes real nice, and straight forward on the work required. Test aren't bad as long as you study the slides, do all the case studies which are only a page each, and the group presentation is an easy A. Doesnt take attendance. Easy B or A
She is nice and test are easy, but you have a powerpoint presentation to do and unclear on what she wants. I do recommend students taking her.
Worst professor I have ever had.You will not learn anything from this class. Avoid her and take some one else.
Dr Chin seems almost smug and mad she has to be there for class- so much so she doesnt hold class on Fridays. She doesn't take attendance, so you can just follow along with the book and never come to class. You never truly understand what she wants you to do on the group project, but she grades easy so it's no big deal.
As you can see from the previous ratings, she is such a boring professor. No one showed up to the class. All she discusses is Kroger and Walmart. Talks about her family all the time. Exams are hard. Does not have classes on Fridays. I would suggest not taking her.
Took this class a year ago and Mrs Chin conveyed alot of anger towards me. She wasn't very nice, but the material in the text book was interesting.
u think u will get ur money worth? U bought an expensive book and she used the old material!! this class is classic government waste!!
AWESOME Professor! Clear about requirements, automatically drops your lowest test grade, really enthusiastic and nice. Doesn't require attendance, very quick with email responses. Highly recommend her!
Easy-Peezy. Material is straight forward. Online quizzes and powerpoints help. 4 exams 25% each, with lowest grade dropped. Easy Group (5-7 members) presentation worth 25%- Not too much work at all- 360 evaluation- beware slacker!. I did not have to go to class or take the final the last month because I had an A and lowest test drops (final).
this was an easy class. you don't have to come to class, but we will be in a group based on one of the closing cases in the back of each chapter. 4 exams w/one dropped. You don't need the book b/c she had Power Points posted so STUDY.She knows her stuff, but seems to have had an attitude alot.
This class is mandatory for all business students, the material is made outside of the school and enforced for accreditation standards, Dr. Chin knows its boring so that's why she doesn't take attendance, and only has one big group project and 4 tests with the lowest test grade dropped. Overall any questions you may have she will answer if you ask.
Dr.Chin helped write the book that is why she doesn't use it a lot, its a great resource to have though if you plan on being a DBA in the future. There are only 2 tests and 2 quizzes. These you really need to study for if you want to pass, Also 10 homework's with one dropped at the end. just by doing the hw & getting a 60+ on tests/quizzes u get a
Chin really isn't that bad. I think she's aware that this class is boring so attendance isn't mandatory. Easy group project, pass the tests by skimming the chapters and doing the practice tests...extra credit given randomly if you attend class
Ms. Chin is an ok professor. The material is a drag in itself and all she does it read the PowerPoints, which can become a little monotonous. It's obvious that she knows her stuff and I must admit she's extremely reasonable on the grading and even drops the lowest test grade which allows you to opt out of your last test. Horrible course, ok prof.
this professor dont really care if you can to class or not. all she does is go over the powerpoint.test are straight from mymislab, so make sure practice test on the mymislab before the test.easy A
First day of class she decided that it would mainly be online, never went back after that. Her online quiz questions can be found directly off the internet. Doesn't drop any quizzes though, so make sure you do them. So if you know how to use ctrl+f and keep up with the work you will get an A. But who knows she may make it harder next semester..
Super easy class online. I wish all classes were like this. I learned alot but wasn't constantly worrying about doing hw & things. Easy quiz every week. Final exam is optional. She is a great teacher! I'm taking her for 350, so I hope it's as good as this class!
Be warned, she has changed things up in our class. First half of the semester we took easy online quizzes that were exactly like the practice ones, after Spring Break she changed it so none of the questions are the same. I've studied the Power Points and go to class, but still get D's and F's on these new quizzes. Be prepared to learn nothing.
As the previous comment stated, she did change the quizzes after Spring Break, and they have become significantly harder. Luckily, we have the first half of the semester grades to help make up for the bad grades we are recieving now. If she teaches this class next year like she has the 2nd part of the semester I would avoid her.
You have 11 quizes, a 2 page research paper and a cumulative final online. She saw too many people getting As on the quiz so she decided to deflate the grades by failing people on the quizes, you cant study for them because the questions are not in the book or powerpoint. If you are looking for a C take the class, goodluck.
Flat out doesnt care. Comes to class with her car keys ready to leave. I asked for help and she just copied and pasted the mission statement in an email. She switched the whole course and the quizzes are impossible. Her office is empty with a desk. You ask her questions about it and she blows you off. At this point any teacher is better than her
Hard on-line quizzes with questions that aren't in the book. Also a 2 pg. PAPER!!
This class started out fairly easy then it seemed like she suddenly wanted people to fail. She completely changed the structure of the course half way through the semester. Suddenly the quizzes that were relatively easy (if you studied) were impossible and the answers weren't in the book! She also doesn't answer questions, just tells you to look.
I'm doing well in this class, but this professor just doesn't care and treats people like they are below her. She teaches straight from the book, and gives lectures provided by the publisher. Some how she makes ~100k a year teaching, or as I call it reading from the publishers slides.
I already have a BA, so I'm a cert student. Out of all 170 credit hours I have, this is the worst professor I've ever had. It's easy to tell she doesn't care about this class. She teaches straight from the text book but then gives test on things that are never covered. Seriously stay away from this professor.
WOW. Talk about a turn around.I have never had a class with so much confusion and chaos then this one during the second half of the semester. quizes were not in the book and the research paper had the worst topic ever heard of with 10 pages worth of guidelines that makes it hell. Avoid Avoid Avoid
Started the semester thinking this would be my easy A class and it ended up being the class i did the worst in! After spring break she changed the format of the quizzes and class has been extremely hard every since. Offers no guidance for studying except the book which the quizzed do not come from. Also, a 2pg paper that she's completely anal about
The quizzes are on BB and are not related to anything from class lectures, the PowerPoints, or the book. It is clear she doesn't care about her students, but is just setting the class up so she barley does any work and Blackboard does all the grading for her. I would avoid at all cost. I just finished the class and feel like I learned nothing.
Half through the semester it was easy. Until she changed it and everyone started to do badly. Dont take this course if you are looking for a C. I got a B only due to the first half balancing my total grade out
Took her for 360 & loved her, but then her 350 class was so hard! Seems she changed the 360 class around. She teaches 350 like it's Java & her quizzes are so hard! She should make 364 easier so everyone can stop complaining about her to the department head.
Horrible! My entire College Career have been filled with A's and B's. I took this course and I received my first ever C!! She always says feel free to contact me, but she NEVER responds when you do!! The Test are amazing hard and the Final was absolutely Ridiculous. If you value your GPA like I do, AVOID AT ALL COST!!! Worst Professor EVER!!!!
Horrible professor! Does not reply back to any emails and this is a hybrid class. Ironic right? She would send you assignments for next week and ignore your emails. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Really disappointed. Tests are really difficult and her lectures are not consistent with what she puts on tests. I had to drop the class because I failed the first two exams, and it wasn't for lack of not studying. She made herself unavailable and unapproachable. This is a gen ed and she made it impossible.
This class is as boring as it gets. Going to class doesn't help any (except the one day she gives a bonus quiz). Read the book, read the book, read the book. Spend a min or two looking up the people she tells you to learn about. Other than that, it's 4 tests, 90% of which seems like test questions she got from the book publisher sample tests.
I don't pay VCU to feel like I'm attending University of Phoenix Online... This is terrible, there is no point in even having a teacher. Tell everyone to memorize as much of the book as possible, then test them on it. Completely boring waste of time.
The worst professor ever. She does not respond to any emails. If I keep emailing her, she responds a week after my last email only saying, "Bring that question to the class.". My question did not relate to our subject. it was about what the average point for our exam was. This is not the only case though. She enjoys staying away from her office.
She is the worst professor ever. Memorize all the vocab in the book because she will ask you all of them. It is a very boring class. She is not helpful. Her tests are ridiculously hard. She makes the class harder than it really should be. DO NOT TAKE HER! She had to give out extra points cause the whole class was failing.
Worst professor ever. our class average was a 60 on the first test. when she teaches she makes it seem like she hates you. the tests are on 15 pages of vocab and random facts from readings in the textbook which you wont know unless you memorized them. the subject matter is easy, yet impossible to get a good grade because of the professor,
The way she sets up her class allows no room for error. 1/3 of your final grade is programming which is the bulk of your course work. 1/3 is the midterm and 1/3 is final. She doesn't give study guides to the midterm so you really don't know what kind of questions will be on her test. She just says "read the chapters." Poor test takers beware!!!!!
This is by far one of the worst professor I have ever had at Virginia Commonwealth University. You have to read the textbook. If you fail the first test, don't expect help from her. I went to her office after I failed the first exam asking what I need to do for the following exams, she said I need to memorize the textbook. Extremely unhelpful.
Dont take her!!!! She basically just reads from powerpoints and makes the test ridiculously hard.
Worst Professor ever! She reads directly from the Power Points in class, provides information through email that does not need to be learned. She is condescending both in person and in lecture. Her exams are extremely difficult. Had to give extra credit. I went to her office, she said to learn the whole book. Don't take! This is a GPA destroyer!
She makes VCU look like a joke. She is honestly the worst teacher I have ever experienced since middle school. She teaches us useless things on her powerpoints, but the test is all on random facts in the book. Not to mention the thick accent she has makes it hard understanding her. This class should be easy and simple. She makes sure its not.
Lot's of information, tests are not really easy, lectures are monotone and pretty boring. Not a great class, but not as bad as people made it out to be. Get a study buddy and call it day.
I had to take this class over summer online. Honestly it's the only way to get through it. I had to withdraw from it during the semester. Her online exams were kind of difficult, you couldn't google all of the questions but they were passable. Good luck!
Really great professor. Had very interesting class discussions. Tests are right out of the book, so definitely read the book.
Best professor EVER!! Very organized and straightforward. Class exercises were very helpful.
She really cares about her students. She is very friendly and easy to talk to. I loved our class discussions about all of the business leaders that are not in the book. Her tests are right out of the book so you HAVE to read the textbook. Highly recommend her!
Great in-class discussions I loved learning about business leaders that are not in the textbook. Be prepared to READ THE TEXTBOOK Her exams are all right out of the book
Easy class IF you are willing to read the book Exams are from the book and powerpoints. She doesn't test you on the business leaders that are not in the book.
She is AWESOME! Definitely recommend taking her course!
Dr. Chin is a very nice person. She genuinely cares about her students and wants us to do well in her class. She motivates us with success stories of others that came before us. You definitely have to read the book and learn the material to do well on her tests. She makes her expectations clear and even lets you drop your lowest test grade!
Best professor at VCU!! Definitely recommend taking her! Expectations are clear. Very approachable. Very nice person.
Took online, syllabus was very clear with deadlines and due dates, great communication.
This class was so easy! For the tests all you have to really do is study the definitions of each chapter to get an A. The final is more conceptual so don't just NOT read the chapters. She's really nice, and attendance is only required on test day (obviously). Easy A.
She failed me this class because there was a technical difficulty while taking the exam. This was a year ago.
Reads from slides and its pretty boring. She kind of talks in one tone not emphasizing what really to focus on. The tests are not really what she talks about in class. 1 hw assignment 3 tests lowest dropped for 40% of the grade. half the tests are true false questions. Says she doesn't curve but tests are in 60s so she gives a nice curve.
Dr. Chin is a really nice person and really cares about her students. Her expectations are very clear and she tells you all of the assignments and tests, and due dates on the first day of class. Her tests are right out of the textbook so you have to read the book! Definitely take her!!
The tests are pretty hard, but she's a nice person. Curves most tests (didn't curve one of them this year) and I have no idea why someone said she has has a "thick accent;" she has no accent whatsoever.
To do well in this class you have to read the textbook word for word. She only curved one exam this semester but she does give a lot of extra credit in class! So don't skip a few classes after exam days. Just do well on the online quizzes and that will pull up your grade.
Really great professor and a really nice, caring person! Makes her expectations very clear right from the beginning. She gives you a lot of chances to do well -- easy weekly quizzes if you read the chapters. She curves the exams and gave us a study guide for the final exam. This is a very straightforward class if you are willing to do the reading.
The material is not impossible. However, she does "In Class Coding" and grades that with extreme prejudice. In these exercises you are expected to do everything on paper and from memory with little to no error. I understand that there is a need to know how to code without the compiler always correcting you, but this goes beyond that.
She is really nice and is definitely the best professor at VCU! This is a tough class, but she is excellent at presenting the material. She goes over everything multiple times, gives you A LOT of practice exercises, and posts EVERYTHING on Blackboard. You will definitely learn A LOT in this class!! If you're looking for an easy A, look elsewhere.
This class is 3 quizzes a week for 10 weeks and a final. You can answer the video quiz questions just by watching the video. The warm-up quizzes are straight from the book. You have 3 attempts per question for these 2 quizzes. Only the last quiz is timed. Dont worry about saving the quizzes because the final had completely different questions.
Dr. Chin has clearly put a lot of time and effort into setting up this course. 3 assessments per week. Very straightforward if you read the chapter. Everything is very clear and immediate feedback on grading. Great elective class! Definitely take it with Dr. Chin!! She is very nice and really wants us to succeed!
Online course, 3 assignments per week. Course is very self explanatory and easy.
This class is so easy. You get 3 online assignments you can easily look up online. You do not have to read the entire PowerPoints nor the book, but do it while you are being tested on your own computer. It can just be done each week all in 1 sitting.
Dr. Chin is the best professor that I have had at VCU. This online class is the most clear and organized class that I have ever taken. Expectations are very clear and she sends a weekly reminder of work due. If you do not do well in this class, it is on you! She does everything she can to help you do well. Awesome professor! Definitely take her!!!
This online class is awesome! She is the best professor @ VCU. Take her for every class that you can -- you will not regret it! She gives thorough responses to email and responds daily. She sends much needed weekly reminders of everything due. She has laid the course out very clearly online. Best experience ever -- I wish more profs were like her.
Dr. Chin is so organized!! Everything is laid out very clearly. I wish all of my online and traditional classes were this clear. She is very responsive to emails, sends out weekly reminders, and is very kind, supportive, and encouraging. Definitely take her! You will not regret it!!
Class is based off of 4 tests (25% each) all online and very specific to the chapters. Never bought the textbook. Quizlet flashcards will help a lot.
Best professor in the School of Business! She is laid back and very helpful to all of her students. Highly recommend her!
she sends emails reminding students of what they should be working on and reminding of any upcoming tests. You don't really interact with her unless you go to her in person, but she seems nice and approachable through her emails. would recommend, class is clearly laid out and 4 tests each 25% make up your whole grade
Mrs. Chin made this class a very well organized course. Whatever she post on assignments or exams is a sign that we have something due on certain dates. Just make sure that you do all the reading in your textbook because the exams are based on the chapters that we read.
Great and easy professor! Take her!!
This class is honestly a joke. You have a total of 4 tests and 5 video quizzes, that's it! It's literally impossible to get an A in this class if you get even under an 80 on one test. Doesn't offer any extra credit and doesn't seem to care about students' grades. All we have to go by is powerpoints. Should give more assignments to help grades.
One of those professors who cares more about fairness than actual learning. In this C# course, she never once used a compiler to teach students how to code, rather using slideshows and unhelpful code puzzles, leaving the students who were confused to learn from a YouTuber. Everyone who passed or failed this class will have the same opinion.
One of the worst professors I've encountered at VCU. She did not utilize a compiler for hands on teaching in C#, instead relying solely on slides and exercises that were not particularly beneficial. There is a tendency to question students' integrity regarding homework if they perform poorly on tests,
Probably one of the easiest classes I've taken. All the material is basically free and straightforward, and you earn a couple certificates on the way. Although there are very few assignments, a lot of it is open book. If you're debating on taking an intersession class, I couldn't recommend this one enough.
Wouldn't recommend this teacher, material was irrelevant to the topic. Can tell she clearly doesn't have industry experience, brought in her husband to show us irrelevant antiquated skills. She didn't know the acronym DQL (data query language). Tests don't gauge your understanding of SQL, most students won't benefit from her course in the tech field
Wouldn't recommend Doctor Chin, is more of an academic with less industry experience. Tests you on outdated computer science problems instead of focusing on information systems. She gives a large curve but her grading is a bit subjective and open ended. We didn't really focus on relational algebra or the actual theory behind relational databases.
