I had many difficulties with this prof. Although I didn't find the material he taught too difficult, he presented it in a way that made it more difficult than it had to be. He can be quite difficult to comprehend and his lectures are painful to get through. I didn't find his lecture slides to be helpful either.
Dr. Sarhan is probably the best professor at Dalhousie...Very Helpful!..and is always there for you! His lectures are clear with examples to make the material easily comprehendable, and has a good sense of humor..I would take any course offered by him anytime!!
First off, I love math. BUT, he is a horrible prof. He has a heavy accent, which can be mainly distracting, but not totally impossible. His slides are NOT helpful what so ever and he has no care for his students learning. The material was super easy but the way he taught it made it out to be confusing and WAY more difficult than it had to be.
he is a great teacher,if you have any questions, just ask him even it is the basic contants,he will answer it.
He is a very bad prof. I am always completely lost during his lectures. He over complicates his explanations. He has a very thick accent that is hard to follow. The class feels so long because I sit there lost and frustrated. He's the kind of prof my high school teachers told us about to scare us. I cant wait until this course is over.
He explains it in a way that is so much more complicated than the actual math is! I always look forward to an exam review from someone else, for example Prof. Carson, to hear is explained in SIMPLE terms! Because the math is simple, but the way Sarhan teaches it makes its extremely complicated
His notes are like boring novels
Sarhan was a great teacher who knew his material and projected it to the class very well. Although he talked very quickly, he still spent time on the course objectives and put much effort into teaching us what we needed to know.
His explaining actively makes the course harder to understand. His English is really bad so he's hard to understand. The course is easy though so it's not the end of the world but that doesn't change the fact he's a horrible instructor.
The class was absolutely awesome! Sarhan is really helpful, if you dont understand something, he can explain it to u again and again until you get it. He's extremely approachable after class. I would take a class with him again.
Completely unimpressed with MSVU after walking into my first class and having this man as my prof. Unorganized, all over the place, and the language barrier makes his class a nightmare. People have been dropping out of the class like flies since the beginning of the year. If you can switch out for another prof, do it now.
I took four classes with Dr. Sarhan during my undergrad, and I feel he is underrated. At first I couldn't understand him at all, but his English improved over the years (or maybe I got used to his accent). He doesn't tolerate slackers, but if you work hard you'll earn his respect and friendship. Very friendly and kind man when you get to know him.
Although many students can't get over the fact he has a very hard to understand accent, if they sat up front or actually tried to listen they would see that Sarhan is actually quite humorous and very clear. He first explains subjects in math terms then breaks it down to a much easier to understand level.
Ammar Sarhan is actually a fairly good instructor, as long as you listen carefully and sit close to the front of the lecture hall. His Arabian accent can be a little hard to understand at times, but as long as you follow the problems, you're fine. Sarhan also throws some witty humor in every now and then.
His lessons are clear and he interacts with the class. People who say that they didn't do well because of his accent are just making excuses. Yes he has an accent, but it didn't prevent me from understanding anything . His notes are useful if you have gone to class, but this is not an easy class to keep up with if you don't go.
Great prof! Ask him any questions and he will solve them for you with detailed explanations! Knows the subject very well!
hard to understand, good at teaching
Took stat 1060 with him, and currently enrolled in stat 2060. Amazing prof, helped me whenever I needed help with any assignments or extra help after class. Tries his best to make the class fun even though it's a very dry subject. Would love to take other courses with him.
easy course.
I loved taking stats with this professor! He made the class fun but still made sure we were learning what we needed to. For someone that hates math like myself, he made me not dread it and actually finish with a great mark!
Very knowledgeable.
He always keeps the class stress free.
Keeps you interested. Has a lot of energy and makes sure you understand. Sometimes is funny and speaks loud so that everyone can hear.
Good teacher and very enthusiastic about his subject. Clearly cares about his students understanding his material.
He always says "I love my notes, you should read them!" BUT! My goodness, his notes are even more confusing than his teaching! I once emailed him to inform us by the note page if he is explaining an example from his notes. No response! He attempted to be funny, but it was hard to laugh when you get super confused by his boring lecture.
Dr. Sarhan, is a very knowledgable guy. His knowledge of statistics is very thorough, and tries his best to explain it the best way he can. However, his explanations are tough to follow and are not very interesting.
Dr. Sarhan was a great professor, he knew his stuff well. He has an accent but if you pay attention it is really easy to understand him. He is very helpful when it comes to the midterm, he was very clear what was going to be on it and wouldnt waste your time with information that was useless for the midterm. His half of the term was better.
Very good prof!!!!!!!!!! HE is very helpful and wants his students to do well. Ignore every other rating because they clearly don't know what a good prof is. He is wonderful and very funny. He doesn't like people who text in class which is understandable because you're not paying for a class to text. Make sure you study the midterm review.
Sarhan is a very good professer. He is very humorous. His class is easy to understand!
I found the assignments and tests assigned throughout the semester difficult. However the mid term and final are great, you are given an identical practice test. He's really funny and loved what he does, just make sure you get to class.
I now love numbers because of him! :)
Going to class and taking notes helps you understand the material and prepares you for the midterm/final when data sets are switched around. The midterm and final are almost IDENTICAL to the ones he gives as examples apart from a few that if you go to class, you'll know how to tackle. Get over the accent, it's university not high school anymore.
He'll put you in a good mood, he's passionate about teaching and he is always cracking jokes. He makes it clear what is required and what isn't worth our time in the course. Only two things I can comment on is the fact that you need to be attentive in class in order to understand him through his accent, and his online notes are messy
Sarhan is great! His notes cover everything you need to know in order to do well in this course (textbook is not necessary) and he's always willing to help if you have questions. His practice exam was very similar to the actual midterm, he put bonus questions on the midterm to boost grades, and he let us bring a cheat sheet into the final.
Great prof. Accent takes a bit to get used to, but if you tell him you don't understand something he will gladly make sure to go over it again. No textbook use, don't buy it. Midterm was a breeze, he posted a practice midterm that was practically identical to the actual midterm. Also liked that the midterm had a bonus question. Ammar is awesome!
THE BEST PROF AT DAL BY FAR! He shows genuine interest in the student's grades and he does not make you learn things that you dont need to learn. Honestly, I wish I could take another class with him. Profs need to be like this guy, really! He understands that we pay alot and he does not make us buy things we dont need.
Had Sarhan for STATS at MSVU. While the topic itself is challenging if you make an honest effort you will be awarded fairly. He was always available for help outside of lecture times and made the class enjoyable. You show him respect and he will give it to you in return.
Ignored my accommodations which greatly impacted my mark. Was not allowed to do an assignment that was worth 20% of final grade, so only received B. Remember, your mental illness accommodations are optional for profs at dal!
Loved Sarhan's class - his exam is also VERY EASY if you study the practice midterm. He is a bit hard to understand but once you catch on to his fast talking he is a great guy. Although, he is not very accessible outside of class. also textbook was not used. would take another class from him
Great guy, great notes, great class.
Enjoyed the course. Dr. Sarhan teaches the first half. He's fantastic, but very fast. Try to take good notes in class and re-read them; it will make much more sense. He's got a lot of material to get through so, he needs to get through it. Very good if you go and speak with him. Friendly and kind. Work hard and you'll do just fine.
My favorite professor this term! Makes the concepts look easy. Online notes are very useful. I contacted him because I had another test and missed an assignment and he was very nice and understanding. Exam is super easy if you read the notes you took from his classes.
Great professor. Looks after Im class and out of class.
Hard! Especially the finals! good luck! Lots of calculations and proof!
One of the best professors at Dalhousie. It is very sad that he teaches only half of STAT1060. I am not a huge fan of math, but thanks to him Im very interested. He is ready to take an extra step to assist you. TIP: make sure you sit in the front row as he asks bonus questions, even if you dont answer right, you may still be rewarded.
Funny, energetic, very engaging. Somehow makes Statistics interesting, an impressive feat in itself. Sometimes misunderstands students' questions to him, but that's the only thing wrong with his teaching, really. Talks quickly, but he's always happy to repeat things or slow down, if you ask him to.
Great prof, very helpful to his students and is a super energetic and funny lecturer. Knows how to engage the class and does an excellent job at explaining the steps and techniques for stats. Accent is a little heavy, but youll get used to it. His sample test papers are super helpful, highly recommend practicing before the exams
Really funny prof. He has a thick accent but is completely understandable, especially if you sit in front. If you ask him for clarification, he won't hesitate to repeat what he said or explain further. He does "bonus points" in his course if you participate in-lecture. He writes on the blackboard, but very legibly and leaves it up for a while.
Sarhan is very accommodating to students, he doesn't use a textbook in his class because he believes students spend enough. He will happily clarify anything you are needing help with and loves to engage the class in his lectures. I was not looking forward to this class however I ended up loving it! Practice exams are VERY similar to the real ones
Dr. Sarhan was a great teacher. No need for textbook. Exam very similar to practice exam. Very willing to help. Very funny in class. Offers extra points thru class participation and thru bonus question at the end of the exam. Made the math very easy to understand. Highly recommend
Accent was really hard for me to understand, but he was still a great professor because he was funny and gave tons of hints throughout the lectures. Practice exam was identical to the real exam, so as long as you could figure out the practice, youre golden.
He cared about our learning so he repeated key info and told us which examples would be on the exam. Talked really fast and I couldnt hear him from the back. Got really mad at students if they werent paying attention, even if they werent being disruptive. Mostly went through material from home instead of going to class
Sarhan was a real gem. He looks out for his students and actually cares about how you do. The material was a bit all over the place but if you do the work this class is an easy A.
Professor Sarhan would make fun of students in class by imitating them and just being rude in general. When I emailed him saying I was anxious about something regarding the exam, he was not very compassionate and I did not feel like he cared at all. He also talks really fast.
Not very accomodating, and is not helpful when I emailed him regarding tests/quizzes.
Dr. Sarhan is a great prof. I thoroughly enjoyed being in his class and this is coming from someone who doesnt like math. He goes over concepts multiple times to make SURE that students understand; Ill admit he does call students out sometimes when they have asked questions he has already addressed multiple times. Pay attention and youll be fine
Worst prof ever
He was my favourite prof this semester by far! He gave helpful practice questions and lots of resources for you to do well in the class! He made the lectures not so boring and gave a very fair exam!
Professor Sarhan is really one in a million. Lectures were easy to follow with many examples, and were also entertaining. This guy has a great sense of humor! Gives very clear expectations for exams and makes sure students have tools to succeed.
Dr Sarhan is a real gem of a professor! Stats is inherently dull but he makes it interesting and funny. Second time taking this course from him, and due to me actually doing the work this time, looks like I'll pass this time around!
One of the most engaging professors I've had. He makes it very clear what you need to know and gives lots of resources. If there are bad ratings for him I genuinely think it is because stats can be difficult and the students did not perform well, but Sarhan is a great prof. He does have an accent so that could make it more difficult for some.
Dr Sarhan is a very caring professor, who is passionate about his work. This course is pretty hard, but because we did badly for the midterm, he scaled the grade and only tested the later chapters for the final.
The subject matter was BRUTAL, but Prof. Sarhan made it bearable, and even understandable at times. I'm not math-minded, but he made himself available for appointments outside his usual hours, and his instruction was very natural. Fantastic professor. Bonkers class, but fantastic professor.
His class was fun. But the second exam was INCREDIBLY hard and we were not shown how to complete it.
Cool dude. Very very passionate. Also quite silly! Lectures were easily replaceable by reading the notes and watching the virtual resources. Exams are entirely based off the practice questions posted online. Never attended tutorials
Extremely difficult final exam. I hope it didn't completely wreck my final grade in this course.
His lecture slides were incredibly confusing. Also, we weren't given a lot of guidance on the final compared to the midterm. His expectations are very unclear and I'm lucky the final didn't mess with my final grade too bad.
Dr. Sarhan was a pretty good prof. Answered emails and held office hours. Assignments and the midterm were a piece of cake. Final exam was a bit difficult- there were definitely a few questions that were tricky and not discussed during lectures. I wished he curved the exam given the 55% average. Overall, he seems like a good guy and a nice prof!
was 1% away from an A+, emailed him, didn't care much.
I found his lectures to be incredibly confusing. He was hard to follow, and much of what he covered in class was not very useful for completing homework. However he does provide lots of online resources which allow students to self teach the material and do well. Final average was 55%, but without the online resources it would have been much lower.
Dr. Sarhan is a fair and funny professor who loves his students to learn well.
Horrible teaching style, very difficult to follow. Not a fan.
His lecture slides were at times confusing, but easy enough to understand with practice. Average for the final was ~55% because he put questions on the exam that weren't covered at all in class.
Prof was nice but the class was BRUTAL! The final was so hard I didn't even finish. GET A TUTOR! TA never showed x2. I reported this was told I had the wrong room but other students were there. When the TA finally showed it was to the same room. The TA then lied & said that the door was closed but I had entered the classroom and waited! Ridiculous!
Loved him, his exams are easy because he gives you the layout of them before hand and just changes the numbers which aloud me to study for my harder exams more than his. Also he is very open for extra help. 100% recommend him.
Dr. Sarhan seems like a nice person, but he is not a very good teacher this year. Left for Egypt at the end of September with no return-date, makes so many basic mistakes both in-lecture and on answer cards, and has failed to continue lectures online as promised. Taking this class is a requirement for me, but it feels like I'm burning my money. 2/5
Dr. Sarhan is a nice guy but he left for Egypt at the end of September and only came back this week. The classes were then online and were really confusing and super hard to pay attention to. Frustrating! He explains things pretty well but goes VERY fast, and it's scary to ask him to slow down in a big auditorium.
Dr. Sarhan was difficult to follow in his lectures. He moved quickly and sometimes had to correct himself or his math as he went. He did understand the content perfectly, and if you do, there are ways to get bonus marks by answering questions. I like how he handled exams, he gave lots of information beforehand.
I loved this guy. I hated stats and the material but he found a way to make it enjoyable. He occasionally gives out bonus points in class which is great. you can also tell he is passionate about the material he is teaching. He also gives excellent reviews before the exams.
really great guy, lectures were amazing and had humor in them. was available outside of class and made statistics very approachable for people who don't like it or think they won't be good at it.
Class was very hard. He left and class was not easy to stay on top of. Class average for final exam was very low.
most of the semester was basically online which was personally terrible for me. The few in person lectures were alot better. Final exam average was pretty low midterm exam was a piece of cake though
Professor left for Egypt at the end of September and was inconsistent with teaching while he was there and didn't come back until late November. Concepts were difficult to grasp as he didn't provide any extra help or accommodations during the strike. Final marks and exam average were very low but he said he was happy with the teaching he did.
Dr. Sarhan is a little temperamental -- he get's angry kind of easily (like packing up b/f class is fully done, etc) but he acknowledges this and besides that, he is a passionate, riveting professor. His lectures are enthusiastic and hilarious. He is quite opinionated. but enjoyable and makes STATs less unbearable.
He is a very fair grader, cares about his students. Speaks fast, but is willing to slow it down and repeat if you need. Does not require textbook.
STAT 4130/5130 Bayesian Data Analysis: Course content is too sparse. May double the topics. Low efficiency of online teaching... Nevertheless, good prof!
He is a fantastic professor. I've never seen a professor care so much about his students. He never adds any new material to exams. It's always best to speak with him. Without a doubt the nicest, I don't believe I will meet any better in future.
Dr. Sarhan was a great prof this semester. He really engaged with class whenever he could. Even when I missed classes due to injuries, he posted his notes online. His exam was easy whatever he teaches is on the exam and he does not surprise with anything that is not on the exam review or the lectures.
By FAR the best professor I have ever had. Cares about his students a lot and is genuinely always ready to help. His practice exams are exactly like the actual exam so if you don't get a good grade that's on you tbh. Always so understanding as well Dalhousie University is LUCKY to have Dr. Sarhan as a prof here. Thanks for everything Dr. !!!!!!!
dr. sarhan is . interesting to say the least. he is quite opinionated and intense, but he certainly made numbers engaging even when i was irritated by his tirades. the practice exams line up pretty much exactly with the exam. study well and you'll get a good grade. no surprises.
Dr. Sarhan is amazing. He was engaging and made material easy to understand. He is very caring and funny which made classes enjoyable. Material on tests was covered in class and there was no surprises. You can earn up to 5% bonus by just participating in class!
I had Dr. Sarhan in 2023 winter. He was an amazing professor and really cared for his students. He knows how to teach and even gave out up to 5% bonus marks for answering questions in class.
Dr Sarhan was a pleasure. He was engaged with the class and his teaching style was clear. He made the class laugh in almost every lecture. He showed concern for how well the students performed. He was very thorough when going through practice questions and would tell us exactly what would be on the exams. He made this class very enjoyable.
This guy is so real. Easiest course I've ever taken.
He makes the course extremely easy to understand and does a great job breaking down and explaining the material. You can earn up to 5% extra credit by participating in the lectures. He is very specific and clear on what's going to be tested in the exams and he's always more than ready to help students. By far one of the best professors i've had.
If you don't like stats, you might not like this course. But Dr. Sarhan taught it in a wonderful way, especially for those less math-inclined. I would recommend!
Very Easy tests and very straightforward. No reason to go to tutorials they are not very helpful and do not have any extra work.
Very funny. Makes it very clear what will be on the exams
Wouldn't recommend taking a class from this prof, especially if you struggle to understand statistics. I've asked him questions after class and he responds with, "have you attended last lecture". I personally am not a fan of him or his teaching style, he does not foster a learning environment for student of all mathematic abilities.
Very funny guy who clearly cares about his students. He outlines every single question on the exam and its equivalent on the practice exam. My only issue with him is that he relies completely on lectures for teaching, as there is no (required) textbook and his online notes are sparse. So, if you miss a lecture or two, you may be quite lost.
Dr. Sarhan is a great prof! He provides great examples in class regarding the material and is always welcoming to questions. He also provides bonus grades for participating in class. His exams are more than fair, often referring to questions on the practice exam.
I loved how he taught the class, but if you're not good at understanding accents, you will not enjoy this class as he can speak very fast and has a strong accent. Otherwise, the class was formatted very well but you HAVE to attend class and the tutorial if you want to do well. The textbook isn't mandatory, but it is highly suggested if you struggle
great
will not unlock assignments under any circumstances. had to retake the whole class bcuz i missed the first 2 assignments BECAUSE I WAS NOT ENROLLED in the class. He would not unlock them. Genuinely makes the content much harder to understand than it needs to be. take it in the summer.
Dr. Sarhan is an amazing professor with lots of enthusiasm towards the course he teaches. He gives out up to 5 bonus marks for in-class participation and he tells you what to focus on when it comes to studying for any of his assessments.
did not enjoy the way he taught
The grading system was good. Exam 1 was easy, there were weekly assignments based on lectures and tutorials . Attendance was not mandatory, but it was encouraged because while doing class examples, he was usually told what would be on the exam. The notes, class examples, and lecture videos were available on bright space.
Dr Sarhan was great at keeping students engaged in the lectures. He gets very passionate about statistics and we can tell that he loves the subject. He is very funny and connects with students. He prepares students very well for midterms and exams and wants everyone to succeed. His exams are also very fair and reflective of lecture material.
Dr Sarhan is fun and interesting in all his classes.
Dr. Sarhan made STATS very easy to understand. He provided clear outlines for tests and wanted students to do well. He has a bit of an accent but I never found it diffcult to understand what he was saying.
I studied all the material this prof provided for the midterm, including all the practice problems and practice midterm, and the actual midterm was very different and difficult and I ended up getting a bad grade despite knowing and studying the material that was supposed be tested.
Midterm was too difficult. He told us to study the practices questions and the examples done in class, I studied everything but in exam most of the questione were not similar !
Sarhan is hilarious and a great teacher. He made stats entertaining and easy to understand for a non science student. Go to every class because he goes through all the practice problems, but he provides so much material that it's easy to study on your own. 100% recommend taking his class!
Love sarhan as a person, hate him as a prof. The midterm average for stat 2060 is always very low every year which says something about the prof not the students. The TA's are even worse, made me hate stats.
Gives easy practice exam. 2 hours for the actual midterm, time is not enough for anyone, gets mad and yells at everyone for not finishing it on time, says midterm was easy (50% class average) and threatens to make the final exam "an actual exam". Lectures are just the Prof yelling formulas and the TAs don't care. Worst prof I ever had. AVOID!!!
For stat 2060, he is the best! He cares and wants his students to pass the course. Midterm was difficult but after looking at the midterm average he made the final easy. Most of the questions in the final were similar with the examples done in class.
Avoid taking STAT 2060 with this guy! Midterm average was a 52%, blames students, says it was an easy test. Funny in class, if you can even keep up with how quick he goes in lectures. Terrible management with the tutorials in the class, don't even bother asking Ammar about them, he'll shrug his shoulders and tell you to go ask his TAs. AVOID AMMAR!
Drove to school with my seatbelt off every time because I'd rather die than take this dude's class
The midterm average was 52% and the final exam's average was 62%. He said the exam is easy but it was hard and tricky. So I don't know why he gave us false hope!!!
Avoid if you can. Extremely low average for midterm (52%), then blamed students for it. Lectures were often impossibly fast-paced and when asked to slow down would for about 3 sentences then do it again. Kept us overtime repeatedly. TA's were greatly varied, I liked mine but other people had horrible ones. Hard class made harder by a difficult prof
Great guy but horrible teacher. Lectures consist of him blazing through content as fast as possible. Topics are never clearly explained and just assumed to have been picked up as soon as they're presented. Tests for my semester had a 52% average and a 62% average for the midterm and final respectively.
Lecture are very hard to follow, sometimes it makes sense and that you understand the material, but at any point he will show you a question he did not prepare you for and you will be left there head scratching at what exactly you are looking at. Weekly quizzes contain material not gone over, and the midterm/final are very different than practice.
His accent is somewhat easy to understand, but not the easiest. His lectures are engaging, and he is a very genuine person. He is approachable and funny. You can use AI on pretty well every assignment, and he tells you exactly what will be on the exam in advance. As long as you pay attention in lectures it will be an easy A+ for you
stats was incredibly boring but dr sarhan has a good sense of humour and kept the class laughing
didnt know someone could be so passionate about basic Stat until I see Dr Sarhan
He's funny and very good at explaining things
He gives very clear directions on what to do, how much work to show, and exactly what to expect. The lectures are insanely detailed and his notes are easy to follow. He is awesome!
One of my favourite profs. I've taken 2 of his courses now and enjoyed them both very much. While attendance isn't mandatory, going to class is super important for this class as he lays everything out. He also gives out bonus grades for participation. Take his class!!
Dr. Saran was a great professor and I would absolutely take his class again. He is clear, easy to understand, good at explaining concepts and topics, and tells you exactly what he's looking for from you in every situation.
Once I got used to Dr. Sarhan, I enjoyed his lectures! He can be funny at times, he gives extra credit, and he is great at explaining content clearly.
Professor Sarhan is a great teacher. He explains topics and methods quite clearly and mentions what is on an exam so he doesn't waste student's time. I highly recommend him to anyone taking stats but prepare thoroughly for his exams as they can be horrible, or you'll be lucky and he gives you the easiest exam you've ever taken.
