Very helpful professor who fosters discussions very well. Has a great understanding of political philosophy and explains difficult ideas very clearly. You'll have to participate in class and read some difficult essays, but its not too bad. Great prof.
Loved this class & Dr. Baehr! She's passionate about the material and gets us all to think and have group debates/discussions. Lots of work involved but it's worth it. Definitely take her class!!

Great Teacher, seems Hard, but she grades pretty easily and just participate and enjoy the class, because her discussions are entertaining most of the times
Easy grader + a fun subject = An awesome class!
Prof. Baehr is one of the fairest graders.
Very intelligent professor who relates well with students and relates topics to current events students can relate to. Highly recomended.
She is NOT an easy grader in upper-level Philosophy classes. With that said, she is a fair teacher with a terrific grasp of the subject. The texts assigned are fairly interesting and enjoyable to read. No tests in her Phil. of Law class, only essays.
One of my favorite teachers of all time. She's really nice and made the class interesting and really fun. Highly recommended. Also, you have to ask her about her toddler son, Carl Basille-Baehr.
Everyone thinks the class is easy, but it is not, difficult grader, the text is possibly the most boring crap ever, DEMOCRAT! TREE HUGGER! SAVE THE WHALES! terrible if your republican
An understanding woman with a clear grasp of the subject matter. She's a very nice, bright scholar that issues fair grades. Also retains captivating class discussions. Expect a fair share of reading.

she is boring... also we had a guy in the class who was a total tool, who looked like lewis from revenge of the nerds. i learned nothing in this class and it was a total waste of my time, look elsewhere for a class
This professor is clueless as to the law. Her credentials are questionable. Many students in the class often undermined her claims and make her look stupid.

As of late, one bitter student has been repeatedly adding negative feedback for this particular educator. Your IP # is tracked. If you continue to abuse this website, I will lock the professor and no one will be able to add ratings. Grow up. - HU Admin
I am a former student, its true i felt biased against in her classroom.
Horrible proffesor, truly dissapointed. Would have thought at this level they would have some non-biased educated people teaching. Seems to be intimdated by intelligent people that can match their knowledge and challenge her. Resignation highly suggested!
wow, never felt more insulted in my life. teacher seriously needs to re-evaluate her morality. school would be better without this professor
very interesting class, discussions were great. it was really hard but maybe that's because i was a freshman the readings were difficult too. don't argue with her unless you mean it because she will make you feel really stupid, but she'll appreciate it
Great teacher !! One of my favorites so far!!
BIAS!!
kyle owns her
Great prof. explains everything. easy assignments. no tests. very nice.
Take her if you're interested in philosophy, otherwise you might find the class a little boring. She's a very nice woman though, and I havent noticed any bias in her class.
egotistical, self absorbed. she monopolized every conversation there was between her and other professors. thinks her opinion is FACT. self important, irritating especially at 9 in the morn and DULL. dont take.
HORRIBLE! Never listened to another idea from anyone. Readings were horrible, but that could be because I despise reading about religion unless it's for a short while or i'm taking a religion course. Self-centered. Horrible questions on final exam/essay... AVOID IN HUHC (avoid HUHC altogehter!)
Very easy coarse, boring though. 1 Midterm, 8 each reaction papers, and a take home final essay. She might be suspect but the class is easy with her.
tries to be thoughtful making everything confusing...never answers questions...dont have her for this class
She responds to questions in a patronizing way and she never tries to understand what anyone else is saying. I also did not comprehend her grading policy and I couldn't spell her freakin name for the life of me. Avoid taking her!
This course was supposed to be very interesting and insightful. I learned two vocab words during the course: MMM & YUCK. She would go off on tangents that weren't related to the books. Easy work during the semseter, but the midterm and final are a killer. AVOID!
ALthough it seems as if my fellow hofstra students think that professor baehr is biased burt she is not. She is clear and is a great facilitator of conversation.
Although my classmates despised her in my opinion, she did a good job in engaging the class. In some respects, her questions killed conversations, but on a whole her classes always had a good sort of philosophical debate which personally I found interesting. A fair grader, final and midterm was fair
Maybe the reason prof. Baehr "didn't listen" to your ideas was beacuse they were BAD? Everyone complained that she disagreed with them but the fact is that she read those books damn well and knew her stuff. Her arguments were naturally better and interesting to boot. Clear, helpful, and fair.
She was totally one-sided. If you're a complete liberal- take her, otherwise- it will be hell. Her tests were essay format but she gave you 1 hour for 3 essays & graded them harshly. Her main point of the whole class (which she constantly emphasized) is there is no God. I hated her
I don't know about her ability to teach C&E (the program forces her to teach under someone else's syllabus), but in her own classes (I've taken 2) she is open minded, enlightening and quite the fair grader. I would not hesitate to take her again; her legal philosophy classes provide for an unparalleled pre-law foundation. Absolutely take her.
By far one of the most intelligent professors at Hofstra. Engaging questions to class, always keeps you thinking and questioning yourself. Readings she assigned could be a bit long winded, but pertainant to class discussion, so youd better read them! I
She was my prof for many Phil classes. She's a big lib, but thoughtful. She wants you to do well and many things she has said have stayed with me. She's the reason why I was a phil major.
nice woman but impossible grader..only class I didn't get an A in that semester- interesting, but midterm and final come out of nowhere and she grades them with far too high standards, definitely avoid her.
An incredibly nice and well-mannered woman. The reading material is a bit tough, but if you stick with it, you should be fine.
If you have an opportunity to take this class absolutely take it! Prof. Baehr is really chill and down to earth. She's clearly a Liberal but she keeps her political philosophy to herself until the end of the semester. Big Discussion class, you talk about sex and good stuff like that! Attendence is a must but trust me you will not want to miss class

excellent class..prof. beahr is extremely intelligent and knows a good deal about the material. lectures are enjoyable, she encourages class discussions..one of the better professors i've had at hofstra.
Professor Baehr is weird but in a good facilitating thought sort of way. Do the readings, be engaged, write well and have fun.
Really nice professor. Knows her material really well and makes class discussions interesting. I think personally that she grades essays really hard, but her midterm was graded easily, so we'll see how the final goes. You learn a great deal in the course and it pretty much sticks with you throughout the course because she refers back. Take her...
Utterly boring class, got by with a little study; very opinionated teacher!
Reading the text is a must. Once you participate in the class it's not boring at all. We had some great debates and I really enjoyed it. She assigns a bunch of papers but you only have to do 5, or do more to drop the lowest grades. She's funny too. Always available to help students out during her office hours. Final was easy as hell.
great class and professor, she's fair and very helpful, just do the assignments and attend class and you should be fine
She is a great professor, very clear and makes the material easy to understand. Sometimes the class is boring but mostly she makes it fun. It's not necessary that you do the readings because she ALWAYS goes over it in class. You have to write 5 1-page papers plus a midterm and final. Great class, great prof, definitely recommend!
she is awesome. the subject itself is boring but she tries to make it interesting by letting the students debate. you really dont have to do the readings cause thats what the lecture is about and she gives little work. i def recommend her and this class.
She's perhaps a little too forgiving, but that may be in part due to the nature of the class I. She's very thorough in explaining things, her assignments make sense, and she encourages class participation and discussion. A
Its one thing to be liberal and its another thing to force those ideas upon a student and base them on it. It seems impossible to create an opinion of your own without her bias refutes. I learn nothing of significance. Avoid her.
Baehr tried to teach the C&E material as best as possible, but she also went her own way a lot and applied it to her subject (philo). She's very laid back, easy grader, reasonable, but she got a bad rap because kids were bitter about mediocre grades. She's a bit nutty, but if thats the type of professor you like then take her. Not bad for C&E
TAKE HER. She makes the otherwise boring material very interesting and relevant and she's so funny! A really smart lady, I loved this class very much.
Dr. Baehr is fair and extremely engaging. Always treats students well and recognizes the merit of your thoughts. Charmingly quirky. Classes feel like a group of colleagues rather than classmates. Stimulating discussions and great contextual examples in discussion. Deducts points for missed classes and lateness, though. Give her a shot!
I took her in Summer I. She was great. Tests and quizzes are open notebook but you still must study and prepare for them! She makes borning philsophy concepts interesting and she's very helpful. If you participate and ask questions, you are guaranteed to do well!
i have nothing but good words to say about her! i had to take this for a grad requirement & im happy i prof baehr. she is so easy and makes class enjoyable-easy 1 question quizes every class & drops the lowest 6, one easy paper, one easy final that she gives u the questions before hand. a lot of reading but u can just google everything.. TAKE HER!!
Dr. Baehr is one of the greatest teachers here at Hofstra. The material she chooses to cover and the way she presents it is clear, interesting and engaging among so many other things. She will have you considering a philosophy major/minor at the end of the course! Overall, a wonderful professor!
She's an interesting character. Easy to get an A if you participate in class. Attendance is "mandatory" but as long as you remain below a certain number your attendance grade may not affect your overall grade. Tests come from her notes rather than the textbook. Study and you will pass. Taking her again next semester because she's easy! Recommended.
I have no good words to say about this professors. She requires 6 short papers to be done throughout the semester and to my understanding they could be emailed, turns out the can't and she only accepted 2 of my paper. I'd say, don't bother but if you must, make sure you have hard copies. Never taking a class with her again.
Dr. Baehr is a sweetheart and is very interested in her work. She is hilarious and will definitely engage you even if you are uninterested. She doesn't require a textbook which is like an angel descended and if you do the work, you will get results! Don't be afraid to ask for help, she is always willing to provide it! Take!
Easy grader, but very boring.
Professor Baehr can be boring in class but she tries to make her material engaging. Classroom discussions can be great depending on the class you have. She doesn't assign much reading or assignments and is a relatively easy grader. You will learn about philosophy in her classes and she is objective. Enjoyable despite being boring some classes.
I'd taken Baehr before & gotten a A so I thought this would be equally easy. It was, actually, really easy as long as you do all the work & at least read a paragraph of each reading to keep up with discussions in class, which make up a lot of your grade. Got an A- b/c of constant lateness though, so be careful. Easy, but strict with small things.
She is a good professor. Is easy and very cool. Makes the class interesting with the ethicist and asking for everyone's opinion. We used a book in the class but i just printed out summaries and I knew everything that was going on. Go to every class and participate you will get an A !!
I'm not one to resort to online forums often, but I needed to rate Professor Baehr because I want everyone to know how sweet she is! As a freshman, she asked me how I was adjusting to college and really seemed to care about me - even outside the classroom. She's definitely a professor you should get to know personally! Love her! (Almost no HW)
Someone keeps posting negative things and that's why her rating on here is so low. She is my favorite professor and if you don't like her, you are doing something wrong. I got 100 on a final (maybe because I was interested in it) but she is a great mentor, I love her and you will too! You must take at least one of her classes before you graduate!
One of the best professors I've had in a long time. The readings are a bit hard to read through but she does a great job of explaining everything you need to know. If you come to class, pay attention, and take good notes you'll do fine. There's 2 papers and a final. It's also really nice that she uses attendance as an extra way to boost your grade.
Dr. Baehr's class for C&E was impossible to do well in unless you agreed with her n every one of her ideas, and are not at all interested in science. She hates hearing controversial ideas and well flat out ignore you if you talk about science. Aside from this, her essay prompts are one sided, and even asking her to clarify is like pulling teeth.
She's the nicest professor I've ever taken. She makes really difficult concepts easy to understand and she's always there for you if you have a problem turning in your paper on time. Take her. You won't regret it
Crazy good. If you want to learn she's the one . Breaks down the class and is super helpful .
A lot of reading but I stopped doing it after week 3. She goes over what you were supposed to read in class anyway so no point in doing it. Baehr isn't boring at all and you can tell she really loves what she does. She loves questions and will answer anything or clarify for you. No written homework, 1 midterm paper, 1 final paper and 1 final exam.
She's honestly fantastic. Take this course. I took it with her and Jenny Rich, and they are a wonderful team.
Professor Baehr is so caring and makes class enjoyable. The Class is based off discussion and does not involve heavy lectures. The readings are all posted on blackboard. Be prepared to do all the assigned readings. The essay quizzes and class discussion is based off of the readings
Baehr is the bomb!!!! Hopefully she will postpone the due date for our fugitive slaw law paper
Do not take over the summer. Course too demanding
She is a friendly woman who is pretty understanding about people being late, absent, or who struggle with assignments. She works with students and generally tries to help us succeed. She wants you to do well. Would take again.
Love Professor Baehr, this is my third time taking her. Super kind and considerate, is so well-versed in both philosophy and the law. If you're nice, pay attention, and do the work, it'll be an easy A.
Sweetest little lady. So passionate about her work and so creative. She's the reason I picked up a Philosophy minor. Absolutely take her if you want to think outside of the box and develop new ideas about things you didn't know you cared about.
Absolute sweetheart! She lectures but it's mostly a discussion based class delving deeper into intense issues. She encourages mature discussions that help you consider new perspectives. She only gave 4 papers and will tell you exactly what she's looking for. She actually cares about her students and is willing to work with you. TAKE HER
Prof. Baehr is seriously the sweetest woman in existence. The class is very discussion oriented and super interesting. Highly recommend taking!
I took Professor Baehr's online PHI15 class over summer break. Overall it was a good class, but there is a TREMENDOUS amount of work. A reading, quiz, discussion board posts, and a paper are due everyday. If you plan on taking her online, make sure you dedicate enough time because it's very easy to fall behind.
Don't have an opinion different than her's, she won't accept it.
She is an amazing person don't get me wrong. Her class is INSANE. We have six 6-page papers to write and she is a pain about them but she is also very understanding if you have a lot going on. I love her as a person but I do not like her teaching and how much work she gives for freshman. YOU CAN STILL DO LEAP IF YOU DONT TAKE HER CLASS.
I really liked Dr. Baehr's class. There was more work than I was used to (4 6-page papers) and close to 1hr of reading before each class. The class itself was easy; discussion + very little lecture. Participate, put in effort & you do well. She definitely takes grading pretty seriously but she's very caring and if you do your best, you'll be fine.
This woman takes herself and her class way too seriously. If you can take this class with a different professor do it. Grades you on participation but talks the entire class and doesnt give you a chance to speak. Gives long unnecessary papers and grades them like youre in grad school. If I could give a zero I would. Worst prof Ive ever had.
Professor Baehr is a good teacher. She provides you with feedback when you work on papers which is helpful. Shes also caring and almost always available for office hours. She has a bad habit of ignoring students sometimes because she gets caught up in lectures but other than that, shes still a nice lady. She can also be funny sometimes.
This woman is the worst person/ professor I have ever met in my life. She made me hate everything about this subject and I will never ever take her class again. She only grades papers that she agrees with well and takes off points if you disagree or interpret anything differently. She should not be the department chair or even be allowed to teach.
She was a very tough grader. If your opinion was different from hers, she would grade your paper more harshly, so beware of that. She also was very heavy on participation. If you don't like to participate or don't feel comfortable doing so, don't take this course with this professor. She was funny at times and a nice person, however those were cons
Overall a very nice person, just not my type of course. Very lecture-heavy and lots of talking, the class feels like it's going on for years. 4 quizzes and 2 papers to make our final grade, papers had to be 5-7 pages long too. Pretty easy course, she's just so boring. A very nice lady and clearly caring, just a boring class. Wouldn't take her again
at first i really didnt mind this prof this is my first philosophy course; it was kindve boring bc it lecture heavy but that's not her problem; what is tho is the fact shes so hard on papers if you use one work or phrasing she doesnt like you'll lose points even tho its not even wrong... also insulted me at office hours but that's besides the point
great professor. very kind and engaging. tests are essays but she goes over all the questions and tells us how to format them so not too bad. topics are interesting and would definitely recommend taking her classes!
The entire class time is filled with her just talking, so its hard to participate even though she is a tough grader on participation. Do not recommend this class if you don't care about politics. Classes are boring and drag on. Only homework is reading the textbook, which isn't hard, but if you don't understand politics, you'll be lost.
Class was a little boring. Wish she didnt use her unpublished textbook. Shes nice, pretty fair and easy.
Baehr is amazing, she's really nice. Materials we learn in class are from her unpublished textbook, she is a great writer and you'll be able to understand the material very easily. I wrote a total of 2 papers in this class. this class will not stress you out. Take her class if you want a low-key class in your schedule
She's really passionate about the subject and you can tell by the way she talks, I personally loved that she used her own textbook for two main reasons 1) it was easy to understand and she's more than happy to clarify anything if you have any trouble, and 2) it wasn't $100+. She does lecture quite a bit but she loves and encourages participation.
She's great. You have to do a lot of readings, but she also spells them out for you in her lectures. She doesn't overload you with written assignments, and is one of the most understanding professors i've met. She really loves it when people participate, and you can tell she puts in a lot of effort. Her assignment instructions are also very clear
Baehr is one of the best professors I have ever had. The entire class was participation basically. Do the readings before the class and then raise your hand and challenge an ethics question and you'll be fine. I loved this class and I will be taking her again.
Very nice professor but refuses to give rubrics and grading is super unclear/unfair. Lectures are very long and boring, and assigns readings for every class.
The professor is really engaging and the discussions in this class are super interesting. Definitely do the readings beforehand - they're not too difficult and will help you participate. I found Unstuckstudy and ChatGPT great for exam prep. Overall, a pretty low-stress class.
Shes extremely knowledgable on everything she teaches. Super fun lectures, she really has a talent for keeping things interesting even if its a boring subject. Professor Baehr only gave a few essays and was very nice when grading, I got mainly B+'s and A-'s and I am NOT a good writer whatsoever.
She's a very nice professor and cares for your success. Beware the class is very writing heavy with participation involved and to be fair, it's fairly easy to do well. Even if she doesn't agree with you or if your answer is wrong, she won't penalize you. I feel I learned a lot about the material and I can't wait to hopefully take her again.
