The best professors, we need more professors like this. If you have a chance take this class, you won't regret it.
the BEST and HARDEST course i've taken at carleton. amy is a fantastic prof!!!
From the first lecture I liked her because she made her expectations clear and told us that she was a hard marker. I respected that. It was a good 1st year experience.

Tough material but an awesome prof! We need more profs like this at Carleton. Kept the class in line, especially those who like to run at the mouth.
Amy's stuff is convoluted and does not know if she is really coming or going. She jumps from topic to topic much too fast and is rude. I did not like her, but the material was alright.
Worst class I have ever taken. Dubious content and questionable teaching method. Avoid at all costs.
Great teacher. Had to actually read the material or else you were dead.
Obviously passionate about subject matter, but a puzzling instructor with unclear expectations for students. Classes were unstructured with virtually no lecture component. She would interrupt student presentations with personal opinions and often combative questions. Though one thing is clear: You need to speak your mind to be heard in her class.
The material is very interesting and she is very passionate and knowledgable on the subject. She is honest about her high expectations. I love that she is not afraid to share her opinion and encourage others to disagree with her. Very interesting class but at the same time quite frightening due to the high expectations.
Best class I've ever taken at Carleton. I love how passionate she is about what she teaches, and how she actually lectures on things that are relevant, not some archaic theory. She's tough, though, and I think she tries to kill her students with readings - but to her credit, she's very open about her expectations.
She is extremely passionate about the content! It's great to have a Prof who personally knows the scholars whose work we are studying. I love that she is sure of her opinions in certain areas, but also open to hearing from students with knowledge outside of her area of expertise. She's also very approachable and helpful if you have questions.
You definately need to do the readings before coming to class and even then, there is still a good chance you will be totally confused. She definately knows her stuff, but her reliance on student presentations is inadequate for a class that has such complex material. She can be hard to understand, but it's a good class if you have lots of time.
The prof scared me at first, and I still find her intimidating. Originally this was the class to drop, but now it has because my favourite course. She will challenge you and demands a lot from her students, but gives a lot in return. THIS IS NOT A BIRD COURSE. do the readings thoroughly, ask as many questions as you can. and you will do well.
Exceptional professor- she's helpful, pleasant, and fair. If you show an interest in the class, she's willing to bend over backwards to help. She assigns tons of reading, but she knows it, and it's interesting. Highly recomended.
This course terrified me for the first month, but I stuck with it because she's a fantastic teacher. What I love about Amy's teaching style is that she forces YOU to think and discuss rather than simply recite passages. I have trouble concentrating in most 3 hour lectures, but not this one. Definitely my favorite prof.
Great prof... Extremely passionate. Instead of talking down to her students (or being condescending) she brings you up to her level and really seems to consider the views of her students... Very inspiring prof! Great class too. I highly recommend both.
Amy was the most inspiring professor I have ever encountered at Carleton. She made us all want to come to class, do the readings and form opinions of our own. It is an amazing class and I recomend doing anything you can to take it.
Phenomenal Prof! She will challenge you but if you do the readings (which are usually very interesting) you'll be fine. She's very passionate so class is never boring. Everyone should take this class!
Carleton is very lucky to have Amy. She is very opinionated, but that is half the fun of her class. She clearly has a brain, and expects you too as well. Students never need feer they will be unfairly penalized for having opposing views-so long as they are well justified. I was always engaged and deeply interested in what was going on.
This woman changed my life. The best prof in Carleton by far. There is no need to worry about whether or not you should go to her class, because she simply makes you want to go every week. Talk to her outside of class for some of the best conversations of your life.
I just graduated, and taking Amy's classes was the best thing I did at Carleton. She is brilliant and inspiring, and even though she is left-wing, she is not predictable. I took everything that she teaches, because her classes were the most engaging thing I encountered on campus. I wish more profs taught to the level of sophistication she demands.
For those who think this class will be easy: IT IS NOT A BIRD COURSE. The assignment is very time consuming, there are way too many readings to do, especially if you are taking a full course load, and often they are also very difficult to understand. The final exam is brutal: beware and DO THE READINGS! Overall, a nice lady, but expects too much.
She is clearly very biased, but very interesting! Her exams are VERY short and the marking is extremely hard. Quotes herself?
Worst teacher I've ever had. Don't even try and think about having an opinion different from hers! The amount of reading she expects you to do is unrealistic, she marks every thing incredibly hard, and gives you no time to write the exam. She shows up to class when she pleases so you'd better hope her TA's are good. She tells her TA's NOT to give A
Absolutely amazing professor. Beware, this is NOT a bird course. Amy's class has changed the way I look at the world and has really taught me how to be a critical thinker. She is passionate about what she teaches and definitely knows her stuff! Take this class if you want to learn, not to slack off! Beware, her 2 hour exam is a toughy!
Worst teacher that I have ever had. She can be very biased and very rude. She does not like it when you state your opinion and makes you look wrong even when you are right. very boring class and very boring topics, with very long readings that you will not manage to finish and have to read more than once
I don't understand people that say Prof Bartholomew expects too much. Yes she is demanding, but this is university we're talking about. If you work hard, she will reward you. She is one of the most interesting people I have ever met and is so passionate. I never had any problems when presenting opposing arguments as long as they're backed up!
Pseudo-intellectual interested in anyone who copies her opinions. Whatever.
Pretentious, haughty, boring professor. Too self-absorbed to actually teach. Pretends to have high expectations to hide superficial engagement.
Worst class. She's rude. If she decides not to like you, you are completely screwed. I wish I never would have taken her course.
This woman is super smart, her class might seem challenging, but she will help you out if you take the initiative to go see her in her office or even ask questions in class. I learned more an extraordinary amount of information in this class. Prof. Amy is one of the best Prof's carleton has.
Amy is smart, and I consider her one of the best professors I have ever had. She is informative and takes the time to explain very complex subject matter that does not really have one answer. She expects a lot from you and this at time seems overwhelming but if you do the work and attend the lectures you will get the grade; very hard to get an A.
this woman changed my life. She is so inspiring! CAUTION: her classes are not bird courses. HOWEVER, they are extremely interesting, she's VERY smart and she has some things to say that will change the way you think. i love her.
SO GREAT!!!:) I learned so much and she demanded academic excellence. Wonderful person too!
Heres the thing, she relies ALOT on her TAs. Some of the classes she doesnt even show up, she lets the TAs teach them for her. She is interesting, but very broad in the way she teaches. Open book exam is always nice though.
She barely showed up to class, she didn't seem to care about us, and the class was only based on other people's opinion essays. She pushes her opinions and it's very hard to think in any other way but hers. Granted, I did learn quite a bit, but I still don't think she's fit to be a prof, per se. She's too intelligent and independent.
Definitely one of my favourite profs at Carleton. She's completely brilliant, not to mention really friendly, understanding, and approachable. She's renewed my love of academia and reminded me what I'm doing in university. She has high expectations but takes students seriously as scholars, which I find empowering. I hope to take her again someday!
Pompous and self-important. Painfully uninteresting class. Uses the word metastasize alarmingly often.
I cant believe the amount of reading she assigned, she imposes her views on you, quotes herself, expects you to read what I estimate to be 500 pages of complicated academic papers, can't find half of her required readings from the syllabus, this is Carleton not Harvard relax. not to mention its a 40%/60% split between essay and a final. BRUTAL
AMAZING professor - probably one of the best you will ever have. She doesn't spoon-feed you anything and you need to do readings and attend lectures, but you learn so much and it literally changed my way of thinking to be more unbiased and critical. Super nice and easy to talk to. Recommend for anyone!
Very intelligent, appropriately tough, just put an effort in to this class and you'll succeed.
The professor is very good. Her course is very interesting and clear. Although, she may present the content very fast. It is not an easy course and it requires to read a lot.
This was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding courses of my undergrad. The readings were difficult, as was a lot of the topics we discussed. However, it was very enjoyable. Just don't miss class and don't only skim the reading. You really need to engage with the text for this course. Amy is very intelligent, and helpful, a great prof.
She is the most arrogant egotistical self rightous professor on planet earth. This is an University that should foster learning and thinking. She does niether. If you don't have the same views as her you will not pass!
Honesty, if I could take this class over and over again, I would. The readings are intense, and there was no chance in hell I did them all, but I wish I could have had the time. I still got a decent mark. She's got amazing ideas and is extremely clear in what she expects of you--and admits her class is hard. Worth it for law nerds!
One of the most amazing profs at Carleton. I usually don't write reviews on here but I had to for her. You learn so much in her class. She tells you from the get-go that her class is challenging BUT it's so worth it. If I could, I would have Amy teach all my classes.
Amy is a strict teacher. She thinks she is all that. She does a good job at teaching because he is clear and gets to the main point. Her assigned readings are overwhelming so the majority of the class does not do them and as a result does bad on the exam.
Great professor, she's a fair marker if you can write at a university level. I enjoyed the discussion group set up.
Dont take her class, if you can take any other prof. She is a great prof who knows what she talking about but she always assumes that we are all advanced academics with Phd's in our pockets. You have assignments that 40 percent and she gave a class of 60-70 people all C's D's and gave one student an A.
You disagree with her opinion? Fail. You missed one class? Fail. You did not do every reading? Fail. DO NOT take her class. You will be miserable and she will question your entire existence if you get a poor grade. "Why are you even in university if you can only get a 70% on this paper" DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
You can tell that Amy knows her stuff, but I have never had a professor who is so hard on her students. She expects a lot and believes that "things are way easier now than how they used to be." I would definitely not take a course from her again because it is extremely demanding. Do your 500 pages of readings or else you will fail.
I would have enjoyed this class a lot more if it wasn't for it's length & the profs monotone voice while lecturing, the classes felt unbearably long. Also, the final was worth 60% of the final grade which was very stressful as I didn't understand a lot of the material. ALSO,get ready to be bombarded with approximately 3.8 million readings each week
If you like law in the traditional case law sense, do not take this class. It's a social justice class. The prof spends more time talking about her book than actually teaching the relevant material. The TAs have never taken a law class and we're not helpful. Find another prof to take this class with.
Amy is very knowledgeable in the areas of International Law and Human Rights. I really enjoyed her class: I will be honest, the first few classes I felt unsure whether I would like it, but as we got into the term I found myself looking forward to the weekly lecture. There is a lot of reading, but it is all well assigned and relevant to the course.
Professor Bartholomew was not looking to give out good grades for students. The readings were long and boring and I didn't feel as though I learnt anything. Her paper was difficult and the grade average in the class was below a B. The topics are interesting if you are extremely passionate about social justice. She looked like Diane Keaton.
this is a warning. do not take this course with this professor. interesting material, however the prof is very monotone and boring. the readings are insanely heavy and she does not have any facial expressions.
Although she is very passionate about her work, she is a horrible Prof. Her course load is to much, as she supplies you with 5 readings 30 pages each. She is monotone. She encourages paticpation yet she disregards & rejects any opinion that doesn't correlate to hers? As for the lecture, she doesn't provide any P.P or visual material...
She really loves to hear herself talk. Disregards any opinions other then her own. There is a lot of readings and I feel like I learned the same thing every week for 14 weeks in a row. If you don't need to take this class, don't.
Im going to start off saying that I loved this class. Prof B not only knew what she was talking about, but was willing to answer questions and interested in the progression of her students. She seems pretty frightening and for the first few classes I was a touch lost but once I figured myself out all was great! Note: she doesn't post slides.
Worst Prof. I have ever had. Disregards any opinion that isn't her own. Has a very open bias about specific topics covered in class. Anyone who disagree's is irrelevant. Readings are incredibly long, and not always relevant. I advise you to not take this class.
She criticizes your opinions when it challenges her own. The assigned readings are very long and boring, with a novel that has to be read for the essay paper. Unless you love reading, avoid this class!
Hard class. Hard Prof. Lots of readings. However, it is very beneficial if you actually go to class, do the readings, and put in an effort.
Professor Bartholomew is truly passionate for international human rights. It's so refreshing to find a professor who is always willing to speak with you after class about current issues and is genuinely interested in getting to know you and your opinions on the course material. She was my favourite professor this semester!
Great prof if you're willing to put a little bit of work in. Eloquent speaker, very intelligent.
No other class has challenged the way this one did but in the best way possible. Amy is an incredibly thoughtful woman that is very passionate about the material and this is consistently reflected in her seminars. She always provides insightful commentary and challenges you to be a more critical thinker. I would definitely recommend her!
Prof. Bartholomew is really passionate about her subject area. This particular class was based on student seminars, with Prof. Bartholomew expanding on key themes and ideas. Every week there's a mandatory reflection to be handed in, and plenty of readings - some more lengthy than others. It was great to have a prof that really cares about a class
To much readings. Its honestly overwhelming . She seems nice but based on the comments doesnt look like anyone does really well. Def needs to revise her weekly expectations
Worst professor ever. Readings are novels in themselves, then you have to read a book on top of that and at the same time when you haven't had time to read, you get scolded and an email telling you not to come to class if you won't read and discuss. Rude individual, do not take this course. Didn't even study law, we studied articles and a book.
Terrible
Would not recommend this class. It's a lot of little things that bother me, such as (a) The essay required us to read a book by an author who according to her is "confusing" and "hard to understand", but since she likes the author we used it anyway. (b) She can choose to lower your essay's mark when you try to debate it. (c) Powerpoint karaoke.
Honnestly unless you're prepared to do an ungodly amount of readings then I'd avoid this class. I actually like Dr. Bartholomew as a proffesor, but the fact that she assigns so much readings really makes it feel like I payed hundreds of dollars for a list that says "here's eight massive documents a week, go google them yourself" instead of a class.
Great Prof! Although there is quite a bit of reading, she explains the content really well in the lectures. Only graded through one essay and one exam. She lets you bring in a cheat sheet for the exam and really prepares you for it. I really enjoyed the class and would recommend. Not a bird course, but not the hardest one I've ever taken either.
Really enjoyed this class. Interesting material and she really makes sure you understand the content. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but there are only two evaluations (one exam & one essay) so it pretty much evens out.
She is a very caring a respectful person, and easily approacheable. You will have to work for your grade, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Definitely do the readings, as course material and evaluations are heavily based on them. Lectures are easy to follow if youve done your readings, and cover very interesting subjects.
Very interesting and respected Prof. definitely do the readings, you have to work for your grade. She is extremely intellectual yet also approachable. She makes the time for you outside of class or before and after lectures if you have questions or just want to have a conversion about a topic. Course material is very interesting.
Amazing Prof. Kind, but expects a lot. Passionate about the material, and expects you to be as well. If you don't do the work, she'll know and it wont go well. Crazy knowledgeable and you'll learn a lot. Tons of readings.
Nice prof, however if you don't need the class don't take it. Many readings,+ 300pg book within the first month, on top off 5-10 additional readings per week. Very narrow subjects pertaining to human rights of one particular war... don't skip class - no notes are provided. Must do readings or you'll regret everything. 1 paper 1 exam (essay)
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but don't let that scare you. Just show up to class and do the readings. The exam is not that bad, but the assignment requires a lot of critical thinking. Amy is a great prof and if you got to the classes she will give you everything you need. I would say do the readings, but I never did tbh.
If youre looking for a second year course that will either critically challenge your thinking and/or require it for your program, take it with Professor Bartholomew. Yes, there are a lot of readings, but she breaks them down every class and tells you what you need to know for the exam (if you show up and stay for the full class).
I am a hard worker and this class was definitely a challenge and her emails and her expectations gave me anxiety even if I was doing the work and putting in the effort. I wouldnt take her class again.
Professor Bartholomew is fantastic. Very passionate about the material and the subject. She will make you think, and you will have to put a fair amount of work into this class, but nothing unreasonable. Give yourself enough time to do the work and you will be fine. I took a class with her in both my second and fourth year and regretted neither.
Very wise and well-spoken prof who really cares about the material she teaches. High expectations, but breaks down all of the key concepts very well and cares about her students a lot. The only thing was that she expected participation in order to boost our mark, but never posed any questions to the class - I felt like I always had to interrupt.
I absolutely loved taking LAWZ22105 with Professor Bartholemew. If you do take this class, readings are super important to understand the lectures as well as the final exam. In comparison to other profs she does not post huge powerpoints to CUlearn, so going to lecture is important to clarify readings/get notes. I hope to have her again!
One of the best professors i've had! She's passionate about the material she teaches on, & she makes theory fun. I read somewhere that her expectations caused students anxiety. She actually doesnt expect you to do anything more than what other professors expect, she just has a more direct approach, & that may not work for every personality :)
God awful.
