While the class isn't ridiculously hard, her method of teaching is useless. She gives you powerpoints to print with just one or two key pieces of information missing so you must attend class - then she READS the powerpoint to you with no supplemental lecture(i have used my entire print quota and it's not even been 8 week, btw) I can read! sucks
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. She never sounds like she knows what she is talking about, and she reads DIRECTLY from the power points. You will not learn anything from her!! Please take my advice and do not take this teacher!
She doesn't seem to be able to explain complex material clearly. The powerpoints are basically worthless, fortunately, her tests are rather easy if you read the text and do masteringbiology
If you took Bio AP in high school and the class was somewhat serious, L112 won't be so challenging. If not, reading the text and doing masteringbiology will help a lot.She is not so organized so you have to print your notes right before class and she has a lot of trouble with lights.
She really has no idea what she is talking about. She reads directly from the overheard and even manages to mess that up. The class is pretty easy though, she let's you drop 2 quizzes and even a test too! A more interesting teacher would be much more worth it though if you like biology...
I really like Professor Berndtson. She is always willing to help during office hours. If you're serious about pre-med, you need to do well in this class and it's not hard. She tells you exactly what's on the exams and quizzes, down to the very types of questions that will be on it and gives extra credit. You get to drop 1 exam and 2 quizzes.
First, I had her for Summer 1 so it might be different than a regular full semester course. Dr. Berndtson was a very easy teacher and she made the topic (pregnancy) interesting as I just took the class because it was an N&M. She gives you EVERYTHING that will be on the test and there was tons and tons of bonus. I did little work and got an A.
She is an easy teacher and clearly explains what will be on the test. Using masteringbiology will get you an A on most quizzes. She gives weekly worksheets to turn in during discussion but you go over the answers while you are there. Only problem was that she did not seem comfortable with teaching anything but the reproduction section.
This prof gives students a chance to get an A in L112 unlike rusink and others. STOP COMPLAINING AND TAKE THIS CLASS! Its for the good of your GPA and college career
She is a great teacher! She has so much interest in the subject. She also drops your lowest exam grade, quiz grade, and attendance check grade. She also tells you before you will have an attendance check and then go over the answers with you before you turn it in so you automatically make a 100.
Prof. Berndtson is really nice and pretty enthusiastic about everything she teaches. She gives out studies guides from which 95% of the test and quiz material is pulled, so it makes studying easy.
Her grading scale is somewhat easy, but L112 is just not an easy class. She doesn't present the material in a clear/interesting way. Her lengthy fill-in-the-blank powerpoint notes are useless and she READS THEM WORD-FOR-WORD during lecture. So frustrating! Choose a different prof for L112, it may be more challenging but it's definitely worth it!
She bases her notes off the book, but you don't need to read at all as long as you take the notes in class (she gives slide outlines that you fill in). It's pretty simple, especially if you go to class and do the chapter guides she gives you. If you know those pretty well and go to class, you'll ace everything.
Awesome teacher! She's so nice and really works hard to make sure everyone understands. Yeah, the lecture itself is boring but the material is interesting and easy!
Great teacher! She is very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject and does her best to make sure everybody understands everything. Getting an A is easily attainable. She drops the lowest test grade which helps. Highly recommended!
She really wants all of her students to do well in her class and get good grades. You should be able to get a high grade in this class if you do the optional study guides. Class is optional. If you think the lecture material is confusing, then go to her office hours, she'll explain concepts in a more clear way.
Prof Berndtson is a really good teacher to a group, but is extremely hard to talk to one on one and isn't the friendliest of people. If you don't go to class it's your loss, but she def won't make you. quizzes every now and then, but her quizzes and exams are pretty easy as long as you pay attention and study appropriately.
If you are going to take BIOL-L112 then take the class with her as your teacher. She gives you notes that are fill-in-the-blank, she offers a lot of extra credit, and she is really good about explaining topics. It was tough to stay awake in her classes because she dimmed the lights too low.
Tests were very difficult, I attended every class and the information in class did not pertain to the tests at all.
Decent teacher, but she really makes every effort to give students a chance to get an A in biology. Notes are straight forward and the quizzes/exams come straight off the study guides, which she gives you answers to. Probably would learn/be challenged more in Rusnick, but I'm happy with the A. Book is rarely used.
Professor Berndtson is very enthusiastic about teaching biology and provides many opportunities (study guides, practice exams, etc.) to do well in the class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS - she goes over the study guides and answers questions. If you are willing to put forth effort and keep on top of material, she will be more than willing to help you.
This class was surprisingly interesting. Just read the chapters and keep up on the worksheets. Dr. B gives plenty of opportunities to do well in the class. Definitely a good prof choice.
A great enthusiastic teacher. She is very willing to work with you if you are struggling or have scheduling conflicts. She gives quizzes every week and her exams and quizzes are tough. I used the extra study guide and it wasnt much help. Just don't miss lecture + print/bring notes and you'll be fine. Awesome bio teacher if you're going medical.
Berndtson teaches really close to the book, so if you attend every lecture and review the notes before the exam, you'll do okay. HOWEVER! Definitely attend the review sessions she had before the exams - she always shows diagrams and information that WILL be on the exam. Exam covers stuff from lecture, discussion wrkshts, and review sessions.
The lecture notes are fill in hen blank, and there are alot of study materials. If you do teh study guides and discussion worksheets and go through teh practice exams you will do fine. Plus you getto drop two quizes and an exam. Its hard to stay awake in lecture, she turns the lights down too low. Recommend bringing a laptop to take notes.
She was very helpful and her tests are fair but require some studying. If you want an A go to office hours, she will review everything. But she is very nice and obvioiusly cares about her students which is more than most could say.
Absolutely loved Professor Berndtson! She really wants her students to do well. Make sure you actually study the discussion worksheets and chapter study guides for the friday quizzes because those can really lower your grade. But overall just do the work and you'll at least get a B. She's awesome!!
Very easy teacher and very kind. She wants her students to do well in the course and she provides many cushion points. Spends too much time focusing on the very complex graduate level female reproduction system, which is her area of study and not important for the rest of your college career.
While I do think Berndston was an excellent and fair professor on the whole, if you're teetering between a lower and a higher letter grade- she will give you the lower one if you've earned it. She definitely does not curve up no matter how much you went to her office hours. Also, don't buy the book- just rent it in the LS library!
VERY HELPFUL AND NICE! She really wants her students to do well and she makes it easier than most biology teachers. She tries to simplify difficult concepts. She makes her tests way easier than most biology professors too! Definitely recommend taking her class for BIO-L 112!
She is a very nice and I believe genuinly wants her students to do well. Unfortunately as far as teaching goes you could do just as well staying home and looking at her powerpoint online. Everything she presents in class is word for word read from her slides, and most of the time the test and quiz information is crypically phrased and irrelevant.
She is extremely helpful! There is a lot of material, and she teaches it very accurately; but she provides many self-aids (study guides, worksheets, practice quizzes, etc.) and office hours to help you keep up. She does everything she can it seems to make sure you can learn the material regardless of your learning ability.
Berndtson is really nice and helpful. Her class has a nice flow to it. She uses articles and activities that are extremely recent and fit in perfectly with the class. Honestly, if you put the right amount of effort, you'll learn a lot and feel really good about it in the end.
She's a sweetheart, so willing to help you out with anything. The tests are not super easy, but you cant expect biology to be a breeze. However, if you use the worksheets and stuff she provides, you should get an a. I also took this class at 8am, so I probably was a bit biased in my rating about class interest.
I couldn't have asked for a better professor in my 1st semester. She genuinely cares about her students, and loves what she is teaching. Her notes, discussion group activities, and study guides provide you with everything you need to know for the exams. As long as you attend class and do the assignments you are set! I definitely recommend her!
Take her for 112. She is super nice and the grading is really fair. I dont suggest buying the book though; we didnt really use it.
Extremely easy, but again, 112 is introductory so easiness is expected.
Dr. Berndtson was a really amazing teacher. She did everything to make the class interesting. Plus, she knows a lot and loves speaking to students. she's readily available too. a great teacher
She gives out too much study info and says to focus on the study questions and activities, then pulls questions from other sources. Expects you to apply info in great depth after explaining it once and not in depth.
She talks a lot, but makes it easy to get an A if you do her busy work. Much of the class is pointless, but it's required for med school admissions and quite a few science majors. Go to the weekly quizzes and turn in discussion. It's basically just a repeat of AP Biology. If there were an Honors, I would have rather taken that.
I thought this class was really hard. I hadn't taken biology since high school so I think this might have contributed to this. There was a lot of work, but it helped my grade so I'm happy for it. I thought her tests were really detail oriented which was really hard for me.
I hadn't taken biology since freshman year of high school so this class was really challenging. Dr. Berndtson would just read off the slides making it almost pointless to go to class. She wouldn't go into much detail while explaining things. However her review sessions before every exam were pretty helpful.
Dr. Berndtson is a very nice lady and cares about her students. Unfortunately, she puts you to sleep during her lectures and it is very hard to learn while trying to stay awake and make out what she is saying (very soft voice). Her exams are extremely detail oriented, something unnecessary for a 100 level class. Too much busy work, not worth it!
I love Dr. Amy Berndtson. She is soo hopeful. Honestly her group study hours are way better than lecture. Only 20 people go it's great. She is soo smart and loves biology. She helps you get prepared for future classes. barely any professors care as much as she does. Take her class and go to group office hours they help!
She gives a lot of work. A lot of memorization is required and sadly her lectures are boring making them virtually useless.
Dr. Berndtson gives a lot of work and expects you to do all of it. There's a lot of memorization, but everything is included in all her lecture slides and extra worksheets. Come test time, study all of the worksheets she created, not the book. Overall, she is very helpful and go to group office hours for sure. She goes over what is on the quiz.
The professor was great. She is very helpful and sweet.
Dr. Berndtson is very sweet and the class is very easy, however the lectures are very long and boring. The class does not engage the student. Lectures can be frustrating as you can essentially obtain the same knowledge from reading. Tests are not bad. Very easy class if you do your work, read, and go to group office hours if you need extra help.
I loved Berndtson's enthusiasm and genuine sweetness in class! The lectures are long and can seem to drag on but that could be because this was an 8am class. Either way, she is very helpful and understanding and the review sessions are a must-go! She basically feeds the test material to you.
Lectures were straight-forward with fill-in the blank powerpoints. If you pay attention in lecture and discussion and minimally study you should be fine as long as you are understanding the material.
Overall a pretty easy professor that was enthusiastic about her field. Sometimes the assignments are dull and dry but are easy, for the most part. Exams can be tough. Pretty fair grading policies though. Recommended to several friends.
Lectures are long, but so nice that she gives her slides w easy fill in the blank notes. She literally gives students EVERYTHING to be successful (answer keys to hw, study questions, and class activities), and feeds test material at her review sessions. Spends so much time on the class, and it shows. Would definitely take class with her again!!
She expects way too much out of you after barely explaining the material. Questions on exams are way too in detail and for the final she gave an exam of 50 questions over 16 chapters.
Lectures were boring and i basically got nothing out of them. She talks way too fast and i had to just relearn everything from the notes. Practice quizzes and exam were nothing like the real tests, and had quizzes every week. However discussion group assignments were done as a group and could drop an exam. Not hard to get an A, just didn't enjoy it
Easy A if you attend lectures and discussions. Review discussion group worksheet and Class activities for the Exams. Only 3 exams and you can drop 1. The final was the hardest test. If you put in the work you can get an A.
Dr. Berndtson is super nice and helpful. Make sure to study ALL the resources she provides for tests to get a good grade. She gives a ton of EC and her group office hours are a really good way to review for quizzes. It's a lot of memorization and studying but she's an amazing professor and loves the subject.
Lectures could be a bit exhaustive, but she did her best to make everything meaningful. Exams were easy if you worked hard by rewriting notesreviewingdoing the worksheets like she advises you to. You get to drop an exam, but make sure to try on all of them. All in all, I learned a lot.
overall she's a great teacher. gives great notes. although attendance is not mandatory I would go to class because she gives great lecture notes. there are also says where she gives quizzes or class assessments which are for a grade so make sure you check the schedule before you skip.
Dr. Berndtson provides your run of the mill intro to biology course. Get the easy points you can, review materials for test and it's a pretty easy A. Provides review sessions for every test as well as detailed study guides. Awesome structure for a freshman level course.
Really great intro course. Everything is clear.
She outlines the course very well and pretty much tells you what to study for each test. As long as you're willing to put in work in then you'll definitely get an A. A lot of the test/quiz questions come from the notes, so make sure to go to class or at least get notes from someone. Doesn't take attendance, but gives announced quizzes/worksheets.
L112 is a hard & confusing class to begin with but Amy really does her best to make the material accessible & understandable. She has review sessions before each exam and makes herself available to you with 4-5 office hours a week! You get to drop 1 test and class activities and discussion group worksheets can pad your grade, but don't skip class!!
Drops exams, discussion section questions, drops pop quizzes, drops quizzes, and gives extra credit. Best Biology teacher thus far.
Very nice person. I had a habit of falling asleep in lecture though.
The class is extremely lecture heavy but her slides are mostly filled out so you can really focus on the lecture and write less during lecture. The discussion groups are very good for really reinforcing the material and she draws a lot of exam questions from DG's. Holds great pre-exam review sessions where she practically gives the exam away.
Berndtson is a great prof. Unless you read the text beforehand, like she recommends, lecture isn't going to teach you the material. I had to read the chapters in depth to really solidify it. Group office hours were extremely helpful. Berndston gives you everything you need to succeed, like study guide keys, etc. You just gotta put in all the work!
Dr. Berndtson offers office hours twice weekly and is available for communication. She really cares and puts a great deal of energy into her teaching. Really a great person and professor, highly recommend.
Professor Berndston sets you up to pass her class - as long as you put in effort. She provides slides that you fill in when you come to class. If you study her slides/notes, study guides, discussion worksheets, group activities, and previous quizzes, you will be fine and should get an A. **GO TO HER GROUP OFFICE HOURS**she gives hints for quizzes
Great lectures, go to class or you will be lost!!! Very intelligent and enthusiastic prof, tests are difficult but study guides are provided and study your butt off!!! I found the class pretty interesting. Not necessary to read the book, everything is covered in lecture slides.
Whatever you learn from her will be from the lectures. She grades very strictly and looks for certain key words in all her questions. Her exams were the toughest part of the class. Every point counts. There aren't very many points in the class overall. I was frustrated with the class and if I had a choice I wouldn't take it with her.
Some of the material in L112 can be dense, but Amy does a really good job of providing plenty of resources (weekly discussion groups, PASS tables, group study sessions, fill-in-the-blank notes, etc.) that make this class an easy A if you take advantage of them. Amy has genuine passion for what she does and really cares about her students' success.
The class itself is pretty easy. She drops your lowest quiz and test score. Amy is a really great lecturer and available outside of class. Go to her group office hours because she hints what will be on the tests and the quizzes!
This class is very lecture heavy but extremely easy if you have a solid background in biology and are able to think critically. The discussion sections really help clarify some concepts and I love my UTA for it. I didn't show up for half of the lectures and still did really well.
Dr. Berndtson will do anything to help you pass the class. If you have always struggled by biology like I have, she is the best teacher to have because she gives you everything you need in order to do well. Take the time to do the activities she asks you to do, and you will no doubt get an A, even if you don't get bio.
I was a junior taking this class having not taken a biology class since freshman year of high school so after the first exam I had a 66 in the class. For the love of god, go to her group office hours before tests and quizzes! Once I started doing that I got my grade up to a 90 in like 3 weeks. The class is hard, but if you put in work youll be fine
Good luck y'all. If you have not taken AP Bio, you're screwed. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. She goes on long tangents about things you don't need to know. So many complex and implied questions on tests. So hard to focus when she uses huge words that most of us don't know. Very good at confusing people
She barely grades anything so every point counts. I calculated it and every point is almost .5% of your grade. Lectures are boring af and if you study and read the book you'll be fine but if you can, go with a different teacher.
Lectures are long and boring but she provides you with worksheets for discussion to review all the material which is really helpful. Also, she personally holds review lectures before exams where she basically goes over what you need to know for it and you can ask questions if you're still unsure about certain info. Overall a super helpful prof.
Attend class and keep up with your readings. Material can be difficult but worst exam grade, worst quiz grade and worst two discussion sheet grades are dropped. Attendance is not required, but quizzes and and class assessments (which students automatically receive credit for completing) are given very often. Most STEM majors will like this class.
Dr. Berndtson is the epitome of a professor who wants all of her students to have the brightest futures. I always felt cared for in her class, and she lets you know of any and all opportunities available, which is great for premed or any pre-professional students. Lectures are slightly boring, but necessary. Take her class!!
If you took AP Bio in HS and did well, this class is a breeze. Amy's really sweet, and she provides lots of drops and a decent amount of extra credit on tests and worksheets. She gives you all the tools you need to succeed; work at it and you'll get the A. The lectures just get boring after awhile; they're really long. Especially at 8am.
Dr. Berndtson cares about her students. If you come to class prepared, pay attention in lecture (and take good notes), do the discussion worksheets (with ease), and go to office hours you'll probably be fine. You must understand the concepts pretty well to perform on exams but there's no escaping the memorization required.
Dr. B is an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students and holds weekly review sessions every week to help students, which are very helpful. She is an awesome teacher and really knows her stuff. Take with Dr. B!
Dr. Berndtson is an awesome professor who truly cares about the success of her students! She goes above and beyond any other professor I've encountered at IU by holding extra office hours, review sessions, etc. With studying, the class is very manageable! Although lectures may drag on, I highly recommend taking BIOL-L112 with Dr. B!!
I had her my freshman year for biology. Really enjoyed her class though it kept me up for some nights. The material can be difficult but she is helpful and knowledgable about the subject
This class wasn't super easy, and the lectures could be boring, but attendance is important for class assessments and notes. Amy really cares about her students' success. She has weekly review sessions, and extra office hours before exams. Lowest exam and lowest 2 quizzes dropped, and many opportunities for extra credit. Very helpful and kind!
She genuinely wants you to succeed and understand the material. She gives so many resources to ensure that you are prepared for tests and quizzes. She is also super sweet and understanding.
Professor Berndtson is amazing. She is super nice and wants her students to do well in her course. Her AI's are super nice as well. If you follow her advice you can get a good grade in this class. Her lectures are interesting and she really cares about her students. Take BIO112 with her!
So kind, understanding, & genuinely cares about your grade & learning experience. Material is clear & easy to follow. Take notes, do the assignments, & study like you would any other class. She gives several opportunities for extra credit on top of EC on all exams. Holds study sessions for quizzes & exams which are extremely helpful. Amazing!!!
Prof Berndtson is truly a great professor, she genuinely wants you to succeed and do well in the class. She also gives so many resources to ensure that you do well, including study guides and practice quizzes/exams, study sessions, and a lot of extra credit assignments. She is so sweet and caring, take her!!!!
This class was honestly a lot of work for the 100-level (especially the honors section) but she is so nice that it makes up for it. If you do everything you can do well, and she goes out of her way to help students succeed. You can tell she really cares about how students are doing in and outside of the class.
She was hands down the best teacher Ive had at IU. She really cares about her students and wants to help her students succeed. Tests are a bit harder than the practice but if you go to class you will be fine.
This class was very interesting with her. There was a lot of material but she was always so encouraging and helpful and always made an effort to know her students, even when there was 150+ students.
I have had Dr. Berndtson twice now for BIOL-L112. I struggled my first semester in her class, not because of course material but because of issues outside the classroom. I trusted Dr. Berndtson and she made me feel like everything would be okay. I retook the course in fall 2020 and was lucky enough to continue to have her support. Amazing prof!
Everything is online and the lectures and the amount of time you have to put into this course is the most ridiculous experience I've had in any of my Covid classes. If you don't really get bio you should wait until after campus completely opens up to take this class. I don't get half the subjects we're doing and the work just keeps increasing.
Dr. B is a great teacher! Most of the material on her tests and quizzes are taken from lecture notes and homework assignments. This class isn't difficult with all the help she provides but it's super time-consuming. I spent 5-6 hours per week outside of class.
Since now taking this class a second time with a different prof, I cant help but realize how awful this class was. It was very difficult and Amys lectures always put me to sleep. Her expectations seemed exuberant and I really struggled through the way she did things I would recommend others to choose a different prof if you arent strong in Bio
Dr. B is incredibly kind. She is always willing to help and gives tons of opportunities to improve. Her class has a few exams, but all are open note- even the final. Her lectures are long and can be boring, but she always points out things that are likely to be on exams.
Literally loved Dr.B!! shes such a sweetheart and the kindest woman ever. Shes extremelyyyyy smart and knows the material and how to teach it. She actually cares about her students!! The lectures are posted online so if you cant make it to class its not a big deal. Love this queen
PLEASE take it with her! She is a super caring professor. She provides so much EC and study resources that really help set you up to pass. If you do the work you'll be fine. She drops some quizzes and 1 exam. Exams open note but long, not crazy difficult. Lecture's can be boring but all of the notes are on exams and quizzes.
Professor Berndtson is absolutely amazing. She really cares that her students get good grades and makes it very clear how to do so at the beginning of the semester. Do your work, and youll do amazing!
Dr Berndtson is super sweet and it's obvious she wants us to do well in her class. Lectures are really content heavy, like just going through slide after slide and I have slept through a majority of the lectures. Tests and quizzes are open note and she gives us a lot of opportunities to ask questions. Her organization of the class is great too.
Don't really use the textbook all that much, only for personal study so you can get away without it I haven't really used mine. Points were mostly from discussion worksheets which you get answers for. Attending discussion and lecture leads to good grades. Tests were open note but still could be challenging. She's very nice
Amy is great! As long as you show up to lectures and take notes you will get an A in this class. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. All information on the tests is in the lecture notes. If you miss a lecture she has videos of all the lectures on canvas. Literally just take notes and review them right before the tests (which are online at home and open note).
Stresses the importance of handwritten notes, but sprints through the PowerPoints, making handwritten notes with all the information impossible. Her PowerPoints are full of information, but be prepared to look at paragraphs of text on every slide, as the information is poorly presented and the figures are convoluted.
By far the best professor/teacher I have ever had. She is so kind and caring and makes it almost impossible to fail her class. She lets you drop one exam score and 2 quiz scores and helps you with other assignments. I really enjoyed her class and she made the content clear as well as her expectations for the class.
Amazing professor. So many resources are available to help students succeed (office hours, weekly review sessions, TAs, extra credit), so if you want to get an A it is doable. The class does have a decently heavy workload, and lectures can drag, but Professor Berndtson does a good job. She is extremely knowledgeable and a fantastic person.
She is a very caring professor, but if you want to do well in class you have to commit a lot of time and use office hours. This is not a class you can succeed in on your own. The lectures are quite boring and she just talks so it's hard to pick up on the material without getting help. She also explains things in the most complicated way possible.
Professor Berndtson is amazing! Her lectures are engaging and well constructed, mainly because she has been teaching this course for decades and perfected it. It is definitely a lot of work, but it is not difficult if you keep up with it. I definitely recommend her!
Amazing professor and genuine person in general. You can really tell she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She makes seemingly boring material in class enjoyable, and she adds in tidbits about her own life that make the long lectures feel more genuine and interesting. One of my favorite profs I have had so far!
I love her- she is the most caring prof I've had. Her lectures were so interesting and you could tell she truly just wants her students to learn. Exams were directly from lecture material and readings, and group projects were actually fun assignments that were not too stressful. We made a TikTok video and a infographic so no papers or posters!
She is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate professors I've ever had. However, she talks a lot and takes a long time to explain simple concepts. I often just skipped class and watched the lecture videos so I could skip to all the actual notes sections. She's a very caring and personable lady, her teaching was just too wordy for me.
Professor Berndtson runs a challenging but rewarding class. Lots of resources and support to succeed, like office hours, review sessions, and TAs. Unstuck ai was a great study tool too. Definitely worth taking!
She is very sweet, but her lectures involve her reading directly off the slide. Often times too when you would ask a question her answer wouldn't be entirely clear on what she wanted. She would sometimes explain certain concepts in a way that all of biology disagrees with and it would make for confusing study sessions. The test drops are nice.
Amazing professor. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students. She is super smart and knowledgable about biology. So many resources to help you succeed, I wish I had went to her office hours more often. Super sweet lady.
