She is the best teacher I've ever had. She gets to know all her students on a personal level, I feel like I can go and talk to her anytime.
A fantastic professor. Easy to talk to, a fair grader, enthusiastic. She has a poly sci background and is very knowledgeable on the subject, which really enriches the basic language courses w/ Central/South American history and politics. Great prof!
She seems fairly anal and uptight at first, but she has a wonderful sense of humor, knows her stuff, and is an excellent teacher.
The best teacher i have had so far. Very good teaching style. Fun in class, tests are easy if you study enough. Study guides exactly like the test. Very helpful out of class if students are interested in getting more out of the class.
At first she does seem very strict and scary but don't run away right away! She is a fantastic teacher, you will be so mad at your high school spanish teacher because compared to her they knew NOTHING! To top it all off she has a good sense of humor and is pretty goofy at times.
Very Very Nice teacher. Very clear and organized. Great teacher.
Great teacher, very clear and precise about everything. I've taken 4 years of high school spanish and I learned more than I thought I ever could... wish I could have gotten into her 102 class.
Teaches liek she works for the Real Academica
Great Teacher, makes you learn, easy to talk to, very funny and friendly. Highly suggested you take her.
Excellent professor teaches material very well. Very helpful, if you ever have questions she will be able to help you. Would recommend to anyone who is willing to work hard, and can get to class on time everyday.
She is a great teacher... too bad I'm not going back to Western this year.... booo
I liked this class. She is one of the only spanish teachers I've had who could actually teach. She is easy to understand, and easy to follow during class. She does teach a bit like a high school teacher, but it works, so I can't complain. Very strict, don't expect any special treatment. Oh, and don't talk during class. Trust me.
Very good professor. Probably my favorite that I've had so far. She does have "favorites" but she's nice to everyone. She seems strict at first, but she has a very good sense of humor.
Excellent teacher! I have never taken any Spanish before and I learned a lot from this class. A bit fast-paced at times for not taking any spanish in high school but if you study and make flashcards you should have no problem getting a high grade in the class. The tests are very similar to the the study guides! Overall, fun class!
Carbajal was o.k not my favorite. She gives homework, but most of the time it's not turned in so you have to do the work but you don't get credit for it. tests can be difficult. she pretty much ignores you if you're not a favorite.
Underrated, possible the single greatest Spanish professor of all time. (Y ella es mi novia secreta).
Excellent Teacher, she knows what she is talking about and does not just tell you the rules, but also explains the reasons behind them, leaving you with a more thorough understanding of the language. She also has a great sense of humour.
The best teacher ever. Hands down. You won't be able to hide in her class and she'll work you to learn, but you will learn. She is one of the few academics who seems interested most in teaching. Great sense of humor, well organized, no conceit...just a great communicator. Take the entire series from her. Well worth the tuition.
I Love this teacher. Not only did I learn a lot from her lectures I was also was entertained. She has the perfect balance of lecture and comedy. As a first year spanish student I was worried, but she was great!!!
fun class, easy if you have past spanish. cool prof. she is a little ocd but very cool and understanding.
AWESOME Teacher! Kept students interested. Very spunky. Just stay on top of the homework and quia and you'll survive!
Carbajal will not only give you an excellent foundation for learning the Spanish language, she will mentor you throughout the years. She is a wonderful resource for inquiring about study abroad, getting help with other Spanish material, or simply having a friendly conversation. The only prof in the dept that I would work with again.
Great teacher! I enjoyed class every day. She makes you work hard, but class is fun and she has a great sense of humor!
She is very helpful and really knows her stuff. Quick witted and really wants to get to know her students. Expect to work hard and to have fun doing so.
I had Carbajal for the 100 series and half of the summer 200 levels and she was awesome. She was the reason why I'm majoring in Spanish. You will always want to come to class, and the HW isn't too bad. As long as you study, do hw and quia, you will do great. She is the best professor I have ever had. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
Organized, helpful, communicates very well, and makes for a good learning environment
I loved Carbajal!! I had it at 8 am everyday and she kept me awake! She is there for the students and will keep helping until you understand! My best prof at Western so far!
Had an amazingly organized curriculum. Well presented and always laughed in class. A ton of fun, and a great teacher. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
A very nice lady, and a good teacher, but the class is extremly fast paced. If you have no background in Spanish the class is nearly impossible. Be ready to study a ton!
I loved Carbajal! I was scarred at first because of how fast the class was going, but I went to her office hours and she was willing to help. I also had a family emergency and she was willing to work with me even though I miss TWO WEEKS of class. Even though I am in higher Span. classes still refer to my notes/ HW from her classes to help me out.
amy is amazing... really hyper at times, really really really good teacher. if you work hard, As will come. If you love languages and wana good intro to spanish, take her! i wish i was still in spanish...
Profesora Carbajal is great in class. She can be tough but she's funny. She's also a tough grader. Her Spanish is excellent and very easily understood. However, I went to her office one time for something and she came across rude and impatient. She can be a bit brash, and she's pretty no-nonsense. Overall she's a pretty good professor.
She was good at talking in Spanish and still communicating what she was saying so that we could understand about 90% of what she was saying.
Carbajal is GREAT - she's animated and hilarious, and clearly really smart. Definitely take as many Spanish classes as you can from her!
I would definitely recommend taking Carbajal for spanish. Her spanish is really clear and pretty easy to understand, and she is always energetic and enthusiastic about class. She can be a little scary at first and she's opinionated, but she is a great teacher
Carbajal is one of the best spanish teachers I have ever had. She teaches in Spanish but is very good at explaining everything so that you can understand. She is also very helpful and understanding if you go talk to her.
best spanish teacher I've had at WWU. She speaks nice and slowly, writes all her notes on the board before class (so you can copy them and then listen instead of trying to multitask). Plus, she's funny and cute. Come to class, though, or you will fail
She is definitely the best teacher ive ever had for anything. She is really funny and she teaches extremely well. You have to work for your A, but you have plenty of oportunitis to earn it. Can't wait to take her 200 level classes next year!
Profesora Carbajal is an amazing teacher! I had her for an 8am class and I was never in danger of falling asleep. She is very passionate about the subject matter and will explain everything with great detail. There is regular homework but it's helpful for the tests. You will learn a lot in any class you take from her, guaranteed!
best teacher ever
I've been taking her for 1st yr span and will continue to have for 2nd year. Carbajal is SOOO helpful and clear. You know exactly whats on exams and hw. She is very helpful and easy to talk to!!! loves to joke and keep it fun while conquering spanish! all her students love her. take a class from her!!!
Carbajal is the best spanish teacher there is at WWU. She pushes you to earn your grade but she does everything she can to get you a good grade out of the class. She is very relate-able to her students and cracks jokes sometimes in class. Taking an 8am class with her isnt hard at all, shes that awesome
She is such an awesome teacher! I took French for 5 years and never understood all of the grammicatical rules but she takes the time to explain all of the grammatical rules of Spanish (and sometimes English...haha). She teaches Spanish very well and even after a quarter I have learned SO much!
Love her! Her expectations are really clear-she always has practice exams. Definitely take her class
I took 101-202 with her. Never had taken Spanish before and now I feel pretty close to fluent. Also took the Intensive Spanish classes with her. Do your homework, show up to class on time (and every time), and you'll do fine. Not a class for slackers, but if you want to learn Spanish she's the teacher to take.
Seriously awesome and super helpful.
Carbajal is magnificent! She is very engaging and funny. She genuinely cares about your education. She does mark you down if you miss too many days but if you tell her why in advance she doesn't mind. Really good teacher.
Absolute BEST Spanish Professor at Western! Super helpful, all of the assignments are clear, and have a purpose. She comes well prepared and does activities that at first may seem annoying but in the end you can't live with out them. She cares about you as a person, a student, and a Spanish speaker and makes better one of all three.
I took 101, 102, 103, 201, and 202 from Profesora Carbajal. She's easily the best professor I've ever had! She's clear about her expectations, explains the material well, and is very conscientious about where students are in their understanding. She's got super flexible office hours, and is 100% teaching to help you succeed. Her classes are fun!
Incredible professor! Explains the material in a way that all the students can understand and will answer any question you have.
Professor Carbojal is very funny and enthusiastic about her class. She is very helpful and makes learning Spanish easy
Outstanding professor! You will learn above an beyond what you think you will learn. She is extremely nice and explains things very well. She has great test reviews and tells you exactly what will be on the test and how it will look, no surprises. You need to attend class, but it is always fun! TAKE HER CLASS, you won't regret it!
Amy is one of my favorite professors so far at WWU. She is hilarious and is always helpful and clear. She loves when students ask questions and always explains things well unless she truly doesn't understand the question. I'm taking 102 with her next quarter but I already feel pretty solid in my Spanish skills.
She's strict, but an amazing teacher! On the first day of class, she explains the whole layout of her class. HW has to be turned in right before class starts, for me it was 8am on the dot. A minute after that, it's considered late and she doesn't accept late work. She expects all her students to participate. Honestly, the best teacher I ever had.
Amy is really great!! She's really strict when it comes to her policies (especially attendance) so be sure to read the syllabus and follow what it says. She's really great about answering questions and making sure you understand. She'll help you, as long as you put in the effort. I highly recommend her!!
I took 101-202 with Amy and she was the reason that I'm majoring in Spanish now! She doesn't take late work, and will only give out a handful of missed days but she is so clear on what you are expected to learn / know. Ask a lot of questions in class, she loves when the students are engaged. Take her class if you can, you will learn so much!
Profesora Carbajal is hilarious. She can seem scary at first, but as long as you're never late to her class, and turn in homework it is an easy class. There is an expensive online textbook/workbook that you have to do before each test but they are easy assignments. I loved that class was only 50 minutes everyday, it really helps to absorb the info.
A class taught on the Dominican Republic and Haiti was made memorable by Carbajal. Her lectures make the material interesting and relatable, and she is very enthusiastic. She gets to know all of her students by name and remembers things about everyone, so the classroom environment is very engaging and personal. I would definitely take her again.
Carbajal is a great teacher. At times she can be a bit annoying and tries to look cool in front of the students. As the quarter went on she got really annoying, screaming for comic effect and really heavily exclaiming her dislike of Puerto Rico food etc., But definitely not a bad choice and I learned a lot from her.
Skip class you really won't pass. she's nice and all but has no sympathy for those who are late or missed class. late homework ? don't even try to turn it in... you're doomed. just go to class, do everything on time and pay attention. i know thats hard but you really have to try
Profesora is EXCELLENT at her job. She has an amazingly effective way of teaching, takes the time to make sure every student is truly understanding the content, and is hilarious and makes class fun. She does take attendance, and docks you 10% for every 5 classes you miss, but it really isn't that hard otherwise. DEFINITELY choose her courses!
Professor Carvajal is absolutely amazing. She's very passionate about her work and wants students to succeed. Make sure to get to class on time or you will not be able to turn in the homework for credit. Skip class and you won't pass. She's hilarious, caring, and an amazing professor. Take her if you ever have the chance!!
Professor Carbajal is the best professor I can imagine when it comes to picking up a new language. She's amazing at what she does. You'll be learning Spanish in no time. Be warned, she is not the kind of teacher that will allow for any sort of excuses. She follows rules very strictly and will expect you to do the same, no matter the circumstances.
Amy Carbajal has been such an amazing help as a first year Spanish student. She's very clear on everything that is taught, and if you need additional help she is always willing to offer her office hours. She's strict when it comes to attendance and turning things in on time, but that's because she wants to establish mutual respect. 100% recommend
Amy is wonderful. She knows how to make the entire class laugh, and she is very intelligent. I love her! I don't love her class. It is extremely fast paced, so if you require extra time to absorb information, this is not the class for you. Exams are 50% of your grade, so if you don't study with classmates, say adios to your GPA.
A great teacher. She really explains things well. Class was always lots of fun.
A great teacher. She really explains things well. Class was always lots of fun. Not a lot of homework and she grades fair.
She's a great teacher- gives good examples, funny at times. She plays music for us every Friday which is cool. Sometimes we'd have activities where we ask each other questions and write down answers, or repeat words, but that's not enough to really learn how to speak it. She's nit picky and will mark you down for every small/big error.
Professor Carbajal is one of the best professors I have had at Western. She is hilarious and always keeps class interesting. She also provides worksheets when the textbook is confusing that make learning much easier. She makes you work for your grade, but as long as you show up to class and study for exams you should do fine.
Carbajal is amazing. 201 was my first class with her and she rocks. I have never had a Spanish teacher more engaged, excited, knowledgeable, and hilarious as Carbajal. Highly recommend.
Professor Carbajal is absolutely amazing! Shes a tough teacher and doesnt let students get away with BS, but thats the best part of the class. She has a great sense of humor and I genuinely feel like Ive learned so much in this class. By far one of the best professors Ive had at WWU.
Amy is fantastic. If you took through spanish 2 in high school even if its been awhile this class is a breeze. Exams are identical to the repasos, homework is frequent enough to learn but not frequent enougn to be too annoying. Lectures, if you can even call them that, are interesting, quick, and engaging. Took minimal studying for me to get an A.
Prof. Carbajal is an incredible professor, her grading criteria is very clear, she is very organized, good about staying to the schedule given in the syllabus. Taking the whole series from here enhanced learning and understanding. She is very good about making class gun. As long as you show up, do your work and participate she is very fair.
She is not a bad teacher, I did learn the material. However I took Spanish for two years in high school so if you dont have that background her class would be hard. SHE MARKS POINTS OFF FOR EVERYTHING. Missing an accent? No points . Added an extra b to aburido? No points. Spelled bien bein? No points. Very nit picky, it was hard to get my A.
Took this class during COVID-19 so it was not business as usual. Prof. Carbajal was a decent professor, class participation is critical.
She won't accept your work if you're late to class. She also likes to choose to have class at the earliest time slot in the morning and as many days of the week as she can. She also doesn't seem to comprehend that not everyone lives on/near campus and that commuting is an issue for some students and that everyone can't bike to the school like her.
She will take points away for EVERYTHING. I got an A but it was extremely hard because I got marked for so many small things. For example one extra r, put the accent the wrong direction. She doesnt care you wont get points and shes snooty about when you ask why she didnt give them to you. She takes away lots of points for participation too.
I highly suggest taking this professor. She is full of energy, loves and cares about her job and students, and is a receptive teacher. She doesn't assign too much work, it's a perfect medium and she always answers any questions anyone has! I am so thankful to have had her for the past two quarters and plan on taking her for another one.
This was my favorite class! It was focused on the Dominican Republic. I loved the structure, the content, and the energy that the class and the professor had. Grade focused on daily summaries after each class (a short paragraph that was easy to complete if you knew what she looks for). I would highly recommend this class to other students.
She will make you repeat words until you say them correctly, especially when there are accents involved, but she is doing it for your benefit if you're serious about learning Spanish! She's great at giving feedback and overall a great professor!
I have taken spanish 101,102,103, and 201 with her online with no previous formal spanish experience except for duolingo. She really knows what she is doing and works hard to make sure her students understand the content. I always felt safe in her class and loved volunteering because she corrected mistakes in a nice way.
I took Spanish 101 this quarter and loved Professor Carbajal! She was very clear with grading criteria from day one and was helpful with my disability accommodations. It was a pretty fast paced class, so expect to be learning lots of vocab for homework.
Professor Carbajal is just great. I've yet to experience a class that was so willing to learn and discuss. She really inspired students to open up. Content was deep and engaging without busy work or needless exams. She let us go wild on our final papers and I actually love writing it. She made is very easy to succeed in and enjoy the course.
Professor Carbajal says learning Spanish is hard but rewarding; I think that describes her class very well. The class is fast paced, and she assigns a lot of homework. All of the homework is graded, but doing it helps with practice and repetition for tests. She is always open to feedback about changing the course to help students.
One of the worst professors for Spanish I could have imagined. She would never make herself accessible or available to help out students, I tried to reach out and schedule an office hours meeting but she never met with me, told me to go to a tutor instead. She did not seem to care about my success in this class despite my efforts. Awful.
Fast-paced class and loads of homework every week. There are five exams and no final, and as long as you do all of the homework they are not too bad. She's entertaining and engaging, and was also very helpful with working out problems with my disability accommodations. I highly recommend taking 101 with her if you are willing to put in the effort.
Professor Carbajal was a really great professor. I learned a lot from her. The amount of homework was kind of a lot but was reasonable for the class. You always knew what was going to be on the exams.
Carbajal is smart and funny, and is very consistent and organized in her teaching. The class is fast paced and has a good amount of homework, but the homework reinforces learning. Carbajal teaches each concept well, though you are expected to know each concept after it's introduced once. Overall, she knows what she is doing and does it well.
Fairly challenging but by the end of the course you actually learn something. Super good feedback and very helpful!
I failed this class for my own reasons but Professor Carbajal is a amazing teacher. At first, I was a bit scared of her but after a few weeks, you will get it. She is so genuinely herself and has really inspired me as a person. Also one of the most well-organized canvases I've ever seen. If you are willing to put in the work, this class is amazing.
I took this in fall quarter and I was scared to participate at first by she is a very engaging and funny professor. She may come off as a bit tough love sometimes but I really learned a lot in this class.
Professor Carbajal was awesome to take. I have taken other professors for Span and she was my favorite. Her class was definitely harder than other classes, but I learned 10x more. She tries to make everything fun and engaging for her students. If she is an option for any of my future classes I am definitely choosing her.
Professor Carbajal was amazing to take for spanish. I took her this most recent winter and I am just now getting around to writing a review. But anyways. She was so awesome and energetic and made learning a new language actually fun and engaging. For me it has been hard to try to learn spanish, but she makes you love it again.
Prof. Carbajal can be kind of intense but she's actually very funny and encouraging. The activities and discussions in class really helped to improve my understanding of the language. She is definitely worth taking, but don't expect to pass with a good grade or any language comprehension if you do not actually do the readings or go to class.
I took Professor Carbajal for all of my 100-level Spanish classes, and she truly inspired me. Her feedback was invaluable, and she made me fall in love with the language. The way she taught was so engaging and clear, and I learned so much. Be prepared for graded attendance and clear outlines of the class and grading.
Professor Carbajal runs a fast-paced class, but her teaching style is engaging. The workload is reasonable with plenty of homework to reinforce learning. unstuckstudy was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Very hands on teacher and is passionate about teaching the language. By far my favorite teacher I've ever had.
