Keeps class interested in the subject matter--easier for the math/science people to grasp than the English people.
WOW! I learned so much. Dr. C. is an incredible teacher.
Way cool chick for a Yankee!
Dr. C is THE best Prof I have ever had.....She is really nice and is really funny, too. TAKE HER CLASSES....you will not regret it
Dr. Carrell seems to dislike teaching. Her greatest strength is her admittedly vast knowledge of English grammar. Unfortunately, Dr. Carrell discourages students from asking questions by humiliating them or otherwise making them feel bad about imposing on her thusly. Dr. Carrell is not a "people" person. Find someone else for this class.
Dr. Carrell would probably make a better editor than teacher. She has so much knowledge to share but seems to do it begrudgingly, mixing in stories that would be fun at the worst times in lecture. Tends to ridicule students who ask questions or try to make them feel foolish. Very intelligent woman who is probably more fun as a friend than a teacher
Unapproachable and not at all helpful. Most miserable I've ever been in an english class.
The previous reviews about Grammar must have come from the people in the class who didn't want to be there--and there were several. Dr. C. knows her stuff and respects students who care enough to learn it. She IS approachable AND helpful. Several people in the class made it very difficult for her and for those of us who wanted to learn.
Dr. C is an excellent professor. Her knowledge can be intimidating, but she is by far the most qualified to teach these courses. She does NOT discourage questions, and doesn't humiliate students. She is gracious and funny. I wish she taught more classes so I could have her again. But her class is not for lazy people looking for and easy 'A.'
Avery good teacher but the class is harder than it should be.
Wonderful teacher who absolutely loves her work and the subject she teaches. One of my favorite professors there. I definitely learned so much from her.
I loved her so much in Linguistics that I took many of her other classes whether it be a serious literature class or her class regarding humour in literature. She is magnificent.
Amazing teacher. Never thought I'd find grammar so much fun.

She does not work with you, and if you happen to be in the hospital for one of her test, do not plan on making it up.
Dr. Carrell rocks my world. I love her like a mother. She is difficult, but you will learn a lot. I remember everything she taught me because she was so thorough. Her class is challenging, but, when you succeed, you feel like a million bucks!!!
Very helpful, learned a lot, great teacher!!!!!!
Work your butt off and learn a ton!!!! Dr. Carrell is one of the best professors at UCO!
She is very funny bu ther class is extremely difficult. It is one of those classes your happy for a C bc there are as many f's as a's on the tests. There quiet a lot of homework. Unless you already know a lot about grammar I'd recommend not taking her class unless you have to.
Dr. Carrell is the awesomest professor ever; be prepared to work (and laugh) your @$$ off. You will learn like none other, and, at the end of the semester, you will know that you truly earned whatever grade you receive. Slackers, pessimists, and those who can't turn off their cell phones before class need not apply.
I was excited about understanding grammar better, but it's difficult to learn when she makes fun of the students that ask questions. Once, she even rolled her eyes at me because I asked a question. I learned more about her cats, her travels, and her family than I do about grammar. If you don't have to take her then- DON'T!!!!
your best bet is not to take this teacher unless ur life is depending on it. she sucks. you will learn more about her vacations and kids then you would anything else. dont dont dont dont dont take herrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Do not take this prof. She is incredibly tough and rude. She makes fun of people in class and points out all their faults (both academically and personally) Everything she says overrides the book so the book is useless and she expects you to learn everything immediately, no questions asked. If you do ask a question, she will make you feel stupid.
WOW! I learned SO MUCH! She's tough and knows her stuff and is totally approachable. She has high expectations for us to learn the material but covers it all completely. Her tests are totally fair (which doesn't mean they're easy), but if you don't study, you won't pass. Be prepared to work, but it's worth it!
She's mean & arrogant. She's extreamly strict with the students but not strict with herself on study. Once she asked us to apply some theories to our research,we've never been taught or even heard of the theories before, and later when we learned the theory by ourselves,it turned out that she didnt know the theories well and even misunderstood it!!
Excellent. Dr. Carrel is amazing and will go above and beyond to help a student.
Dr. C is one of the best professors in the English department. Grammar and Linguistics rock her world and it makes her classes so fun! She is definitely approachable and will work with you. You have to study for her exams, but they're fair--not necessarily easy. Take her course: You'll learn so much and laugh the entire time! Favorite professor!
She knows her material. Lecture and notes on board. Lecture content not supported by txtbks. Pop quizzes. SEVERE mood swings; Tantrumed when the class did poorly on a test, joked/talked instead of teaching 2 class periods, then crammed in new material right up to the final.
She Said she had a reputation, turns out it is true, she bairly used the book, had a loose lesson plan at best, accused me and another student of cheating, which was not true. If you want a hard time take her. Or just take an Adjunct at night.
Dr. C is extremely hard. If you attend classes, do extra credit and display that you are interested in making a good grade, she will go above and beyond for you. Otherwise, good luck. Study for the pop quizzes, in the end they really carry your grade. Tests are hard, watch out for true and false, she trys to trick.
I enrolled in her English Grammar & Usage course even after reading the negative reviews on here. I have been pleasantly surprised; she is straightforward, open-minded, & understanding. She's open to questions/comments and teaches with many analogous examples that assist in the memorization process. I'll definitely be taking her for Linguistics!
As a person, she is really awesome - very witty and funny. But as a professor - NO! She is easily THE WORST professor I have ever had! She gets very impatient when students ask questions (especially foreign students), can't keep insulting comments about poor grades to herself and feeds you the "It's not me, it's you" line when you fail tests.
she is impatient and insults students' intelligence anonymously. she blames her students for everything. she goes off on tangents and takes up class time and then squishes everything in at the last minute. I know more about her personal life than her class.
Dr. Carrell teaches difficult material and she demands that we actually learn that material. She does not pull punches, but is straightforward and will go out of her way to help you make your grade if you attend class and work hard. Not for those looking for a pushover or blowoff class.
TOUGH, but brilliant. Dont buy the book for grammar and usage. everything is from the lecture so you MUST attend class. yes she goes off on tangents but she will make sure she covers all the material and will push back the test until she does so. If you're smart and a hard worker, it's totally possible to get an A.
As mentioned before she is condescending and impatient. I have never had a professor that gives up trying to explain something. Always sick and complaining about being sick. Know more about her and her family than about the source material. Sometimes you have to know when to retire, and it is passed her time.
Brilliant, but when half your students repeat your class, it isn't them, it's you. Doesn't mind criticising, but doesn't handle criticism well. Complains about not feeling well &/or menopause too often in addition to spending too much class time telling family stories! TOUGH CLASS! Don't put this class off, allow a semester to repeat it!
Worst professor I have ever had. She spent more time talking about herself, her family and her conference than she did the course.Everything was unorganized and last second and you should expect every quiz and test to be very last minute.I would recommend not taking her.
This is a difficult course but she tells you that up front. The quizzes are last minute because they are pop quizzes (Duh!). She never gives you a test over material that she hasn't covered at least a week in advance. If you annoy her a bunch of questions about your grade you will annoy everyone, not just her. Do your best and be happy with it.
Spent most of her time talking about her kids, college days, or the lang. conference she runs. She missed 3 classes & left after only 10 min. twice. Didn't cover all the material and cut a test out because of it. Threw last min. pop quizzes to make up points. Grades unfairly; marked me wrong & girl next to me right 4 SAME answer! I want my $ back!
Brilliant, witty woman. She definitely knows her stuff but she does not time manage well. She missed classes & talked about lang. conf. constantly. Learned morphology in two class periods- right before final. Very difficult to do well with minimal grades and last minute information.
Very funny and likable lady, but the lecture was neither clear nor concise. I did not feel that the chosen book was very well put together. It jumped around a lot and, considering that we were expected to memorize a lot of terms and how they relate to one another, it was fairly incomprehensible. I do not feel like I learned much from this format.
She tells you that the class is difficult. Don't buy the book. She is an awesome professor and made the material interesting. It was more of the scientific side of English, so it was hard for me, but she is so helpful and funny that it makes if better. Ask questions!
Understands it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Tries to be clear. She is understanding & reasonable. An SI is available to tutor. Normally 10 mins late. Summarizes her family stuff & health for another 10. Starts lecture 30 mins after start time. Has a lot of personal & family health struggles. HER TESTS ARE VERY DIFFICULT. Sweet, likable.
I have to agree with the last person. She is a nice person, but always late to class. We know more about her family issues than English. She is very passionate about her work, but is extremely disorganized. She does not use the book, so don't bother buying it. Her test are extremely difficult. I don't recommend her class. Stay away from it.
Hard material, NO MATTER WHO TEACHES IT. I loved Dr. Carrell. Sure, she talks a lot about personal stuff, but she cares about yours, too! My father got sick when I was in her class, and TO THIS DAY she asks me how he's doing every chance she gets. I never got a B on anything, and I'm very average, so IT IS POSSIBLE.
Dr. Carrell does her best for material that, honestly, is going to be tough for a lot of English majors who tend to shy away from the scientific aspect of their language. She's a brilliant woman and is always eager to let her students succeed. She can get off topic, but does this to give her students a break from being overwhelmed by the subject.
Worst professor I've ever had. Took her for Linguistics without knowing what I got into, but then of course Grammar and Usage with her is all that fits in my senior year schedule. Nightmare. Constantly late. Talks about nothing for most of class in the loudest, shrillest voice imaginable. Talked more about her family than anything English related.
Dr. Carrell is hilarious and obviously brilliant. However, she expects more than she should. If you expect your class to learn the IPA in a few weeks, then you should be actively involved in making it happen. The sad thing is this class could be so interesting if it was taught appropriately.
I took Dr. Carrell for two different classes two semesters in a row. Frequently the first semester I would show up to class, and there would be a sign on the door cancelling class. No email notification or anything. During the second semester we did not see her from the Tuesday after spring break on. Her SI's taught the class until the last week!
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take her. Run far, far away.
Does it matter what I write in that she's physically unfit to teach, covers material slowly, and doesn't prepare you properly for the few tests? Not really, because, if you're an English major, you don't have other teachers as options and are highly likely to have this teacher. A testament not to go to UCO for an English degree. Oh well...
She was pretty horrible to some of the students, berating them and making you feel stupid if you asked a question and you weren't one of her favorites. She is not physically able to teach class, and we maybe had class once a week for a MWF class. Never had tests because she didn't teach the material and the final was an easy in-class group project.
Dr. Carrell does have health issues that result in her having to cancel class, but she covers as much as she can and does not move on until she's satisfied the students grasp the material. Tests only cover what she has taught so far. She was very understanding of health issues and considerate, but she won't brook laziness or being on your phone.
I will not be taking any more classes from Dr. Carrell. She is constantly going off topic and is monotone most of the time. She jumps around and says things like, "you won't need to know this but...". She doesn't follow the dates on her syllabus making planning impossible. HARSH grader. If not for her SI, I wouldn't have learned a single thing.
This is tough material, regardless of who teaches it--a required course for English majors, but most of us aren't used to approaching coursework in the scientific/formulaic way that Gram. & Usage demands. Dr. Carrell tries very hard to make sure that everyone knows and understands what they need to know. She does try too hard to please everyone.
The worst professor I've had in my entire college career. Had to drop because I felt as though the class didn't stay on track. She was never on time but our attendance is necessary. She never brought her notes to the class and gave us a quiz after she had cancelled class for two weeks. AVOID HER AT ALL COST.
No matter what anyone else has said on here-- Dr. Carrell has an absolute heart of gold. And she really does care so much about her students. You do have to work hard, but the material is difficult no matter WHO teaches it. If you have issues, just talk to her. Honesty, hard work, and kindness are the keys here.
Best class I've had my entire time at UCO! Dr. Carrell is brilliant and so inspiring. I learned more in the one semester of Grammar and Usage from her than all 4 years of highschool. Don't be scared by her first exam - this is most difficult. Stick with the class and I promise it gets easier. Taking her again in the Falll!
Dr. Carrell is very knowledgeable about both grammar and linguistics. However, due to illnesses and poor health, her class is hard to get through. She dozes off during her own lectures and does not follow a set order of material. The class would have been great if she had used a textbook or followed a set order.
Dr. Carrell is SUCH a SWEET/funny lady. Have patience with her b/c she does have medical issues. Attendance is not required but you will be lost if you miss a lot of days. She gives extra credit and she does do pop quizzes!! It will benefit you if you go visit her during her office hours, if you put in the effort she will help you in the long run.
BY FAR the BEST professor I have EVER had at UCO! Yes, the material is hard. Yes, you DO have to WORK for a good grade. Dr. Carrell is wonderful and one of the sweetest, most caring people I've ever known. If you're struggling, just talk to her, she cares so much about her students. She does have some medical issues, just be patient with her.
Precious, precious professor. Loves her job & is dedicated to her students. Tough material, but if you communicate with Dr. C & make the effort, she will get you through Grammar & Linguistics! She is caring, intelligent, loving, and has a great sense of humor. Dont believe rumors. Shes amazing. Dont miss the opportunity to have her as a Prof!
Good professor. Taking her again next semester. Good sense of humor and cares about her students. The book isn't required by her but I would highly suggest getting it anyway just to help you study. As long as you show up to class you'll be fine. Tough material but she give lots of extra credit and a huge curve.
I've read some really negative reviews on here about Dr. C missing a lot of classes, yet they fail to mention how frighteningly ill she was & that she was in the hospital. Dr. C is a great prof. Her material is tough but as long as you put in some effort & study you'll do fine. She's easy to talk to. If you need help go to her OFFICE HOURS!
She is a nice lady. But she doesnt cover the material very well at all and her tests ask for very specific information. She wants it word for word the way she said it in class. If not stated the way she wants, she will count off. She is a tough grader Im not taking her class again
This class didn't help me learn much or learn at all. The pop quizzes were vaguely worded. The tests were hard and covered the materials Dr. Carrell didn't have a chance to teach due to her hospitalization. The lectures contained too little information and there were no PowerPoint slides to help me learn.
Don't take Grammar and Linguistics in the same semester! I'd wrongly thought they would complement each other nicely. The professor taught us "parts of speech" in daily life, then used SHAKESPEARE's ENGLISH to ask her students to try to identify the parts of speech ON THE EXAM! She also didn't welcome clarification questions. I felt so helpless.
I had to retake the class this semester to graduate. Too bad I failed again. Dr. Carrell always seemed very tired every time she was in class, so when I asked her to re-explain to me the concepts, she said, "I don't know. I trust that you can google them yourself." Her tests are hard in a bad way because she tested concepts not covered at all.
This class is slow lecture-heavy and there is little discussion apart from going over the POP quizzes and exams. Be ready to memorize word-for-word the definitions, paradigms, vowel charts, phonetic symbols, and so many more. Despite my grade, I learned little when the professor kept repeating herself.
I wished I could learn more from this class but the sheer pressure of reciting verbatim what the professor said overwhelmed me. Though I had come to her office six times to seek help, I still couldn't understand her materials. Her SI was not available to tutor us when she was sick and absent, either.
This class was somewhat worth my effort: I read the textbook that was NOT required. I went to the professor's office every single day after class (when Dr. Carrell was not too weak and tired to answer my questions). And I actively sought out the SI (who was never available in class) to ask her to quiz me and reteach the materials to me. I got a B-!
Dr. Carrell usually didn't bring her notes to class. And if she did, she used a magnifying glass to look at her own handwriting in illegible pencil marks. She then read verbatim her notes, had the class write down concepts, then went on about her life. Tests were hard and didn't reflect the learned/taught materials. Avoid her at all costs.
She's a hilarious person, but not a fun PROFESSOR. The material is taught in a very sloppy manner. If it weren't for extra credit and curving, I never would have passed her classes. If you want to learn, avoid her, but if you just need a passing grade and the other prof's class is full, take Carrell's, and good luck.
Amy Carrell was sick and hospitalized for 2/3 of the semester. Her students had to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in less than a month. I didn't understand a thing. Her homework contained typos and yet she penalized incorrect punctuations on the tests. The lectures were very counterproductive, anti-intellectual, and overtly wordy.
All you do in this class is diagram paragraphs. I barely passed and Im a good student who went on to obtain a graduate degree in literature. Unless youre a grammar prodigy, I would avoid taking her classes at all costs. I took an inconvient night class to avoid taking her again. Shes interesting personally, but not someone who should teaching.
She was seriously the worst professor Ive ever had. She was not approachable, very degrading when answering questions, and was not understanding when I had legitimate reasons for not showing up for class. She does not make attendance mandatory, but the two days I missed happened to be quiz days. I would recommend taking this class online w/o her.
While Dr. Carrell is a great person, she is (in my opinion) only a mediocre professor. She is up there in age, has serious vision and walking problems. Mostly teaches from an office chair. She is learning to use the online platform. No extra credit options. She moves really fast and doesn't take many questions. It's time to hang her hat and retire.
We only use worksheets to learn grammar. It was very difficult. I would recommend taking someone else if you can. If not, be prepared for hard work. Always do the extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR RUN FOR YOUR LIFE DO NOT DO IT I SWEAR!
I thought that I was imagining the difficulty like she made me feel like I was until I read the previous reviews. Last weeks of classes she seemed to disappear and not prepare students for the assignments she had due for us. Ridiculed me in feedback on essay and has me weary to send an email to her about a possible error. Do not take her.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Worst professor ever. She forgets to upload things/uploads the wrong things. Rude feedback. Admitted that she cannot see clear & misread my homework. Graded wrong & I pointed out that the answer key questions were different than the homework. Lists textbook but she uses misspelled word docs she made. Don't let my B fool, you!
I passed this class with a B thanks to Google &YouTube. She disappears & is unresponsive. The school really needs to do something about this, My entire class was stressed and experienced how incompetent this professor was. She's the only prof for Linguistics and I am mortified I have to take her again! BEWARE AND RUN!
I don't see why everyone rates this professor bad. My experience with this class is that you put in the work, you get the grade you deserve. We had to write several smaller essays and four larger essays. I turned my work in on time, received feedback and a grade. I went about my business. She was even nice enough to provide essay prompts.
