ruined my GPA. Tests are ambiguous and vague, Test felt like she wanted you to fail
this prof and course ruined my GPA. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. the tests are impossibly difficult and extremely ambiguous. studied for hours yet felt like the test was designed for me to fail. almost as if she wants you to fail. strongly advice against taking this class.
She's the worst prof ever. If you expect to learn about law in her class forget it! She makes u memorize dates and names instead of understanding the law itself. Her tests (all MC) are ambiguous and random af. Instructions for assignments are horribly vague. If you have her you'll understand why people think crim is a joke.
Worst prof. Avoid her as much as possible. Her test are ambiguous and she wont let you see ur MT after. She only let u see the ansr key and expect you to MEMORIZE what you got wrong which is stupid. Theres no potential growth in her class. If you do bad u do bad u cant learn from your mistakes and improve. Just dont even take a chance
I genuinely enjoyed Amy's lectures and was an easy prof to listen to. I am a pretty good note taker and was happy with my midterm preparations. Saying this, the midterm was one of the hardest I've taken in a while as the questions were not discussed in class included random information that was not reviewed. I would avoid this taking this class.
Not a good experience. If planning on taking a the course with her prepare to be clueless for your midterm. Every lecture was a complete drag and served little to no use for prepping for midterm or final. Would much rather have a different professor. Thanks to corona for getting me out her class early!
Her lectures were extremely boring, I felt as if you did not have to attend the class to understand materials. The midterm was fairly difficult, not much study guides and left clueless. Not what was on the lectures or textbook. Tutorials are mandatory, but also really boring. Rather take the class online if you have the chance. Overall, poor class.
A terrible prof. clearly does not care about her job, had no empathy for her students during covid-19 online classes, extremely hard mc midterm w vague questions on dates instead of major theories/cases. She couldnt figure out how to post recorded slides when we were forced to go online, but asked us to do group presentation with recorded ppt.0/10
Do the readings, attend class and participate in tutorial. Her lectures are engaging and useful for exams. Professor Conroy made dry material very interesting. She is clear about her expectations and I would definitely take more classes with her. Easy A as long as you are willing to put in the work.
I dont recommend taking classes with Amy. She asks very random, specific and detailed questions on exams and doesnt test you on the overall concept. She does not take suggestions/recommendations/criticism well and acts defensive. She was not lenient towards students when classes went online and made things harder than needed. Overall, avoid her.
She gives very very DRY lectures and just reads off slides. Exams are off slides and textbook which is also dry so it makes for a boring class. If you didnt like 131, this isnt the class for you. During the COVID19 online transition she was very unsupportive and didnt seem to give much flexibility or consideration for the circumstances.
Avoid Amy! Her class is probably the most useless class ive ever taken. When covid-19 hit she expected her students to finish their presentation and not giving alternative options. Mass students complain about exam time and she disregarded all her students complaint. Shes not considerate, no feedbacks & ambiguous tests.
Anyone who tells you this is an easy A is lying. She does NOT care about student feedback or the fairness of material even if there is a global pandemic (COVID-19). Absolutely NO give on grading, exams are extermely detailed and her example questions are not even comparable to what she puts of the exam. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! & thank me later
Honestly just don't take any class with her. She does schedule in 3 review classes for the whole semester (1 for midterm, 2 for final) but the exams are way different than her reviews and she doesn't give much time to write it since its all mc. She reads off the slides and is hard to follow once she starts talking about a topic.
Tough considering it's a first year class but not impossible to do well. She tried her best to make it as straightforward as possible. She did a great final exam review and went out of her way to address every question we had. She has high but fair expectations and wants you to succeed.
kinda shocked that there are people out there who liked this prof. lecture content was super boring and she gave good explanations but nothing extraordinary. she disregards students' concerns and had mistakes in the final exam. her tests are ambiguous as others have said. grading criteria is super strict and unfair & lecture slides are very vague.
Amy was a decent prof. but her lecture slides make absolutely no sense unless u make note of what she says word for word so studying is not easy unless you have it all down. Her midterm was brutal to say the least due to very small time limit but her final (online due to Covid) was a lot better and questions made more sense than those of midterm
Amy gave an extremely difficult midterm (one of the hardest for a first year class), but her final exam was very fair. Her lectures and long and boring and you HAVE to read the book if you want to get a good mark in this class - not everything is covered in lecture. She rounded up grades in the end and turned out being a decent prof
I'm usually a B+ or A- student but I found that keeping up with the coursework made getting a high grade relatively easy. Honestly, if you just do what she says (read the assigned chapters, go to lecture, etc), you're guaranteed a good grade. I really liked her lectures, and my TA (Giovanna) was great! 10/10
Professor Conroy talks fast, but her lectures are very important information wise. She's very professional and transitioned very well to the online format. MAKE SURE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK and know names and dates (prime ministers etc). Overall midterm was difficult and final was cumulative. Her assignments weren't too difficult. Good prof.
Her lecture slides are brief so you will have to come to lectures to pay attention and listen her talk. It is important to attend the lectures because most of the questions on the exams will be from materials she talked about. Pay attention to cases and pictures in her slides cause it is guaranteed she will ask you about those on the exams.
Her midterm was 50 mc questions but gave us only 1 hour to finish the exam. They were long, complex and took time to read the questions. Her average for the midterm was very low so she had to give extra marks to everybody. Her lecture slides had little content so you needed to listen to her but she talked so fast it was hard to follow along.
Ive taken 10 crime classes with different profs, and Amy is by far the worst. She doesnt cover much in lectures, but her exams are hard af. the class average for 135 midterm was 54% after she bumped us up. aviod her at all cost trust me. bless covid19 for getting me out of her class early
Prof Conroy is actually a great prof and I would definitely take one of her classes again. She is super helpful and you can tell she cares about her students. Do the readings know the ins and outs of the cases discussed and show up for lectures and you will be fine. I even got 100% on her exams b/c I did just that! Good luck!
Conroy is so vague about the assignments or papers you have to do. You will never see a criteria sheet in this class, nor the purpose or aim of what you are writing your paper on. No idea why she is so disorganized but this class was not worth it with her. Definitely do not recommend.
Good luck if you take Amy. She gives vague instructions and has no criteria yet marks all the assignments with high unrealistic expectations. For a class that isnt a W class there is a lot of writing that is worth a lot. Careful with this one.

One of the best profs for remote learning She posts recorded lectures and tutorials are asynchronous (on canvas) no awkward zoom calls or presentations Transcribe everything she says in lectures so you can ctrl + F for exams. Make sure to do the readings (even the news articles she mentions in lectures bc those are on exams). Textbook is mandatory.

lectures are posted in podcast form, brief , asynchronous, not the most engaging. Almost get a disinterested feel from Dr. Conroy. Her test's aren't easy either.
take 317 with any prof but amy. i have warned every crim student possible how horrible she is. DO NOT listen to anyone who is rude enough to recommend her unless youre will to sacrifice your gpa and your happiness. she wants you to fail i hate my life rn in her class
The instructions for assignments are not specific enough at all but you will be graded like as if her high expectations were made clear. Her excuses for taking marks away will not align in any way with the grading criteria.

Amy only provides you pre-recorded lectures where she speaks so illiterately fast that it makes it impossible to take accurate notes. She will test you on the tiniest details she verbally mentions in those recordings since there is ZERO info on her slides, meanwhile I cannot grasp a word she is saying. She has a horrible teaching system.
She talks so fast I don't even think she knows what she's saying. I keep her lectures at 0.5x so I actually get down what she is saying (since her tests are literally on everything that she says). It is incredibly difficult to keep up with this prof, and this is the second course I have taken with her, still don't know her expectation.
Exams really easy (95% based on lecture, with some stupid specific Q's), but unclear grading criteria on assignment. Make sure you reply to many people for tutorials or you'll lose many marks. Don't bother with textbook other than to skim for context. Lectures were <50 minutes/week. Didn't get much out of the class. TA was not great either.
She's definitely not an easy professor but she's adapted well to online learning so recorded lectures are posted on time with corresponding slides that are both easy to understand. There's only one assignment and it was graded pretty strictly, but keeping in mind it's a UD course you should not expect to receive freebies. You'll have to work for it
She rambles so much in her lectures that are podcasts. The midterm exam was 20 short answers and 15 multiple choice questions and she expected all of it to be completed in an hour which is ridiculous. If the short answer questions had one-word answers I wouldn't have cared but they required a decent amount of sentences.
The course content is interesting, however, Amy makes it impossible to demonstrate what you learned. The exam was one hour with 15 mc and 20 written where she expected paragraph answers to the written question (the questions themselves were long so it took a minute to even READ the question). I do NOT recommend if you care about your grades.
The tutorial is worth 10% and within this tutorial we had to do a group presentation and every single tutorial you basically writing multi paragraph anwsers and it's only worth 10%. The exams are fairly fast paced so you need to know what you are doing or you wont finish and she asks oddly specific questions for the multiple choice.
Her podcasts are so long yet only 20% of them will be on the exams. There are weekly discussions where you have a group presentation and have to write long paragraphs yet it's only worth 10%. The exams have a one hour time limit and you have to complete many questions within that time frame.
Professor Conroy is one of the best profs to be taught by online. She has adapted better than any other professor I know. She is strict, but clear in her expectations, and doesnt throw you curveballs. You do need to listen to her lectures because the slides dont have much info, so take good notes, and read the text. Shes a reasonable grader :)
Amy expects you to read her mind. Does not give clear instructions for assignments. Does not explain answers to assignments, but expects us to all of a sudden understand the right answer just because she gave us a grade. Not reasonable at all, will argue back with students.
just save your time and money dont take her. words can not describe the pain she will give you. she seems like a nice person but shouldn't be teaching at sfu. There is no proper grading guidelines or rubric. She will give you a case brief and expect you have JD.
Questions and concerns regarding assignments and grading criteria will not be heard or considered by Amy. She emphasized that although the class is online, it will still be treated like a regular class. By this she means, you will not be allowed a rubric for assignments worth like 30% of your grade. Save your money, mental health and grades y'all
Amy has forgotten what it means to be an educator. She gives you no rubric, no help, and does not create a safe space for her students. She is a difficult professor and is not worth your time and money. Instead, you will be left feeling lost and stressed. She also does not listen to students who provide her with feedback on how to improve her ways
I really enjoy her as a professor anyone who critiques her expects to be hand fed information and wants to be treated as if they're still in high school. She posts informative podcasts and opens a discussion board for any questions on assignments/lectures. You have to put in the work none of her classes are "gpa boosters" and they don't claim to be
made this semester harder than it needed to be. Overall course content is not too difficult and its easy to do well but you need to be very organized because Amy is extremely disorganized. If you can time manage well, take only ONE of her courses at a time. I took this with her 335 class and regretted it my entire semester. She gives bonus marks
Make sure to listen to the lectures because that's where most of the examinable material comes from. Dr. Conroy provides writing workshops in lieu of a criteria sheet for term papers. Some of the students were very rude and spent the workshop demanding a rubric for the paper, which was unnecessary because her instructions were clear and precise.
She is not a bad teacher. I like how her class gave many options to earn grades. I disagree with the reviewer that said students were being rude to Professor Conroy for wanting a paper rubric. Every professor I have had has given out a rubric for the paper and it is not very difficult to provide one. She should have provided one for students.
I heard about how bad she was but I wanted to give her a chance and try a course myself. Probably the worst class I've ever taken here because of how rude and inconsistent she was. Refused to give a rubric and I'm sure this is why the TAs were inconsistent with marking. Course isn't hard, but the lectures are useless so use the textbook. AVOID HER
She is not that terrible as anecdotes but she is not a good prof either. She mostly focuses on the textbook makes you feel like you are teaching yourself. The materials are interesting but I don't think she teaches the well and trie to help students comprehend. I need a professor to teach me well rather than just throwing a textbook onto my face...
She was helpful in answering all my questions throughout her course. Her lectures are always released on time and it is expected you go over them and participate in activities within a reasonable time. I found her Final exam interesting. If you enjoy studying different behaviours and personality disorders and their causes you will enjoy her class.

I do not get why everyone hates her so much. I've had her for 4 classes now and every single one was been good. She doesn't put a lot of info in her slides so it means you actually have to pay attention and take notes in her class but like, it university, this is what lectures should be like, anyways just my opinion
People who criticize her lectures/teaching style expect to be treated like theyre still in high school. If you want to do well, pay attention and take notes. she tells you everything you need to know and doesnt throw curve balls as long as you are proactive about your learning.
Dr. Conroy was an amazing prof. If you attend the lectures and pay attention it is not hard to do well in this class. She also offers many opportunities for bonus marks. For example, if you correct what you got wrong she added 3 extra marks to our midterm marks.
If you come to class and pay attention to the slides, you can easily get an A. She does not ask any trick questions. She literally takes questions word for word from lecture material so just pay attention.

This is my first review of a prof in my undergrad degree thus far and I loved how Dr. Conroy and the accompanying TAs delivered this course. Like previous reviews state: pay attention and take notes in lecture. Exams were straightforward and fair, the content was interesting, bonus mark opportunities were plentiful. Overall, super enjoyable course!
You either love her or hate her, although I don'y really understand the criticism. She is incredibly clear in her instructions and the course flows in a very organized way. By far the best prof I've had at SFU and she offers very easy bonus opportunities!
One of my favorite profs! Lectures are engaging with interesting, current events and topics. Readings are dry, but the way the assignments are planned out (short, easy in-class midterm, take-home midterm and final) you don't need to memorize the book.
I found Amy placed a lot of emphasis on topics briefly mentioned during lectures that were not covered much in the textbook on exams, which made it difficult to know what to expect. However, the take home exams were relatively easy to do, and the criteria for all the questions was highly descriptive.
Highly recommend Dr. Conroy! Interesting lectures and gave bonus marks at the end of the course! Textbook heavy, but I found she always reviewed testable material in class. Ignore old poor reviews going in. She has clearly reflected on past criticism and improved her course format and her lecturing style. Favourite crim prof yet!
I will be fair, she is a very well-structured professor. Her intentions with each test are clear and her assignments are usually straight-forward. BUT those are the only positive things if you are not a Crim major-focused student, you MUST and I mean MUST read every single assigned chapter and extra reading in order to get a decent grade.
I enjoyed Amy's class and think her RMP rating should be higher! Amy hosted regular office hours and was very accessible if you needed help. The midterm was straightforward and the assignments allowed you to demonstrate your knowledge without having to write super long papers). The one critique I have is that the guidelines are sometimes too vague.
The slides are photos and she wants you to take notes of what she's saying but speaks extremely quickly therefore, it's unclear what to note. The midterm average was low 60's and the bonus quiz was only worth 3 marks. There was nothing on the review that was asked on the midterm. This professor makes this course harder than it needs to be.
The most boring CRIM class you can ever take at SFU. I don't blame Amy entirely, I feel like anyone who has to teach this course would struggle communicating such dry information to students. However, the textbook she chose to assign is probably the worst written textbook I have ever been forced to read. The TA marks extremely hard.
Good lecturer, but slides are convoluted & often illegible. Assignments are pretty good w/ clear marking. Exams = bad, the MCQ was best answer & hard. For short answer TAs will hammer you with arbitrary semantics deductions. Marking is inconsistent - I checked a classmate. There's bonus opportunity, but the test average was 63%. It's ridiculous.
Midterm was insanely difficult. TAs found any little reason to take marks off from your short answers even if you got it right and overall marked hard in the course. Unclear grading criteria. Puts no information on slides, arguing she prefers to verbalize her information, but proceeds to talk too fast to take accurate notes. AVOID.
Dr. Conroy is the best professor at SFU for legal studies and law-based courses. She makes difficult content easy to understand by slowing down in lectures to cover these topics, and encourages students to participate in lectures. She provides detailed feedback for every assignment and provides bonuses, which no other Crim professors do at SFU.
Amy practically taught the class with an iron fist. She was one of the most unaccommodating, strict professors I have come across in my undergrad. Her exams are designed to trick you, her slides provide NO information for exams and she offers vague answers to your questions in her emails. I strongly suggest to AVOID her classes and look elsewhere.
After taking two classes with Amy, I can say that she is very clear with her grading expectations and creates fair exams. In CRIM 330 she offered multiple opportunities for bonus marks after big assignments. If you put in effort, you will be able to do well in her classes, no need to avoid her.
She knows what she's talking about, and gives clear instructions. Her lectures are hard to follow along with since there's barely any info on the slides and she kinda blabs. The midterm was also hell, MC questions are very wordy and kinda tricky. The final was a take-home and the papers were easy.

course is not structured at all. Hardly any writing on slides for talking points just a bunch of pictures. Is biased with her input and her OPINION seems to be always "right".

Im a 4th year crim student and Amy Conroy is the one name i will look for to make sure to never take a class with her again. You guys know how there are some people who really want to be teachers but just should not for the greater good? She is one of them. I would drop out of SFU before taking a class with her again. Genuinely a bottom tier prof.
I think Amy gets a bad rep from students. She definitely cares about students and lets the final be take home and you can have a cheatsheet during the midterm which is a lifesaver. However, she can be a difficult grader on the first assignment and expect you to know some details you may think are a bit unfair.
Probably the worst professor of my undergrad. I had to take her 3 times so it's not just one course. She is clearly ideologically possessed and is dismissive of challenges to what she says. She will rarely answer a question honestly and will ridicule you or distract you by changing the subject or by using jargon. Also, her slides are useless. 0/10.
Attendance is mandatory and participation is required it will affect the final grade. Exams are extremely easy and study guides are allowed for the midterm. The final is a take home exam. Very easy to pass the course as long as you show up and make a few comments in the discussions. No textbook all readings are free and online.
By far the worst course ive ever taken. Does not care for her students at all. Lacks a clear grading criteria and refuses to show us a grading rubric. Somehow she seems proud of the fact she stresses out all her students and has a class average of %55. Writing to the dean about her because her courses are anything but fair and educational.
Seems like a nice person, but as a professor, she makes it extremely difficult for students to get good marks (And she knows this. Her class average is ALWAYS very low). Even when you've done in-depth work or studying, she is super specific in what she looks for in her assignments and tests. She gives cheat sheets for tests, but doesn't help much.
Avoid this class at all costs! This is by far the hardest class I've taken in my crim undergrad. She is a very tough marker. The lecture slides don't contain anything important. Course material is strictly based on readings and textbooks. The class average is in the low-mid 50s. If you are a Crim student, avoid this class at all costs!
She is always available to answer questions and provide feedback, and she creates a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters engagement and learning. Her knowledgeable material and talent for presenting complex concepts in an accessible way make her an exceptional teacher.
All you are doing is listening and trying to write what she's blabbering about. I wrote the wrong term because she said it only once and that same term was on the test so make sure to really listen clearly. She records her classes otherwise I'm sure everyone would fail. She let us use a cheat sheet for the midterm, yet the average was super low.

never in my 4 years of university have i felt the need to write a review on here, but 2 classes with amy conroy this semester has pushed me to the edge. pls listen to me when i say that i never want to hear the name amy conroy ever again. if you EVER need to take a course with her for some reason - this is your sign to drop out instead
TA SAM WAS THE BEST. This is the most stressed I have ever been in a semester. gives us only 4 days to work on a take home exam which is worth so much of our final grade AND cumulative! some of us cannot book off work and need more than 4 days to complete an exam. took two classes with her this semester and I am honestly fried
Amy teaches you how to pull from readings and find analytical support. From the start of the course it prepares you for the assignments and final. Attending the lectures give a deeper insight where she goes over them and highlights the main focus points. I enjoyed how she used different modes of learning - video & podcast.
Course involves zero creative thinking, If I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars on a course, I expect the course to be explained through differentiating perspectives to gain a complex understanding of the subject. Instead, Amy forces her beliefs onto students in which she only assigns readings (including flawed studies) to support her position.
She is the best prof ever. There are two assignments, one midterm, and a final term paper. She is very detailed, organized, and will help you excel in this class. The final paper has very clear expectations and she helps you a lot. Show up to class and do the readings. The midterm was also very straightforward if you keep up with the readings.
Amy was a good professor and understood the material well. Asked lots of questions in class to keep us engaged. Graded by 2 assignments, a midterm & final exam. All were very easy, for the exams we could have a double sided cheat sheet 8.5x11in and for the assignments we could have a no explanation necessary late submission for one.
Not sure why there's so many bad reviews, not the best but certainly not bad. Gave more than enough time for assignments. Interesting lectures, though she occasionally goes on tangents and repeats herself. We usually got out of class early. Tough grader on papers but did well on the midterm because you were allowed a cheat sheet.
Horrible horrible prof. she just talks nonsense and never comes around to making a point. she loves using words such as "clarity" and "quality" however does not know what they mean or how to put anything into practice. Goes on tangents, and never answers your question. take the class if you want to tank your gpa and like to go in circles.

She words them in such confusing ways, it's like she wants her students to not do well. Save yourself the stress and do not take any class with her. I wish I listened to the reviews on here.
I have taken several classes with Professor Conroy, and her classes are very engaging and I recommend attending the lectures in-person for discussions! She is open to concerns and questions, and provides clear instructions on how to reach the grade you desire. Stay caught up with the readings and lectures if you want to do well and ask questions!
First time I am writing a review because of how bad my experience was. I have previously taken courses with Amy and each time I regret it so much. She always says that the course is hard and that it is hard to get a good grade in her class. But its not because the material is hard but the fact that she can't teach.
Amy does not know how to teach, her lectures are always all over the place, her voice gets really irritating after a while

Lectures never get to the point. Sometimes it's hard to pick out whether what she's saying is relevant or if it's just another tangent. Becomes difficult to listen to after a while. Assigns long readings from the textbook where anything is fair game. Questions are worded confusingly.
This teacher cannot teach to save her life. Very confusing lecturer who never gets to the point. Talks in circles and is not organized cant even bring her own charger to class. Wording on tests is confusing half the class had mistakes in the marking of their midterm. Those who rated 5 is probably Amy commenting on her own.
I don't know why everyone seems to hate her. She is perfectly fine, good even. This course's assignments and exams were very reading focused, the lectures just highlighted things she was more likely to ask on exams etc. went into this course anxious because of the ratings, but it was perfectly fine. don't be scared. you'll do great.
I just finished a course with Amy Conroy and she did a very decent job teaching it. The material was not difficult to understand and she has a lot of knowledge when it comes to the subject matter at hand. If you are in class and do the assigned readings you should be able to do well with her as a professor.
Amy sucked at teaching this course. she was all over the place. only good thing was that some cases overlapped from 335 so those were easy to understand but otherwise I would not recommend taking this course.
Amy tries to make us look at things more critically, and I definitely learned to be more attentive to detail by taking this class, but if English is not your first language or you get distracted easily, her classes are difficult to follow. The slides are useless, she mostly talks (FAST) and that's what your notes will be. Grading can be harsh too.
I will never forget the amount of stress this class caused me. She is an extremely hard grader. I struggled so much in this class. I wish I never took this class with her, my GPA is going to be ruined. Please take any prof besides her. She assigns so many confusing readings and expect you to understand them all in depth. The exams are so hard too.

You just need to pay attention to what she's saying during the lecture to fully understand the readings. The course content itself is hard. But she posts lecture recordings, so you can always go back and review them. I recommend taking classes with Amy.

Amy is a nice prof, allows cheat sheets and extra credit. However, she says that lecture is a class discussion but tends to talk about things that don't really make sense. Beware, her quizzes and midterm are based on class discussion and there is a lot of reading u must do.
Amy made a 200 level course harder than it should have been. LOTS of readings, many real life cases from the textbook and she would not let us know which ones should be focused on. Slides were useless, lecture discussions often led to tangents.
Amy is by far the WORST prof I have ever taken in my four years at SFU. Tough grader, disrespectful when her students need help or ask for clarification, an insane amount of readings. Stopped doing my legal studies certf. because she is the only prof for the crim courses. Has truly caused me so much stress, save your mental health and AVOID!
The negative reviews are exaggerated. Amy is not the best prof but she is not bad at all. There is nothing to prevent you from doing well if you actually study and ask questions if you're confused. The course content is hard, but she posts lecture recordings AND gave the opportunity for extra credit. I put in a normal amount of work and got an A.

I wish I had read the other reviews posted but unfortunately I joined the class as a last minute GPA booster thing and now I'm most probably going to withdraw. In all my 3 years of studying, I have never seen a professor as bad and as hard of a marker as Amy. I only took this as an intro elective class and now I heavily regret it. don't take her.
I would like to preface this with the fact that i took her intro class for a grade booster. She is a wonderful teacher but the coursework has a lot of readings, and she grades pretty hard. If you plan on taking her class as an "easy grade booster", be prepared to put in time and effort.

What overlaps between her slides in the lecture and what is said in the text are guaranteed to be on the exam. She is definitely one of the more strict profs I've had but she is not unreasonable especially if you are putting in the work.

She knows what she's talking about and the tests are pretty easy, also provides a good amount of review material. However, assignment questions are unclear and she often expects you to know things that aren't specifically asked. You might think you're answering the question but she takes off marks because things are "missing"
Amy sucks I genuinely had like 5 mental breakdowns over this class. Her lectures are just her ranting for 2 hours and her slides have no information on them. She tries to start discussions in lectures but nobody speaks because everyone is probably asleep from her tangents. All her content is heavily based on the textbook so make sure you read it
She is a frim feminist. If you challenge feminism, or don't pump it up to a level she is satisfied with, she will punish you with low grades. This was largely discussed in our private student discussions, some praised Feminism just for an A and it worked. Students shouldn't have to share the perspective of their instructors for good grades.
Very poor teaching experience, not clear instructions for test content. Also an insanely hard marker who will never give full credit and only give a 7/10 if 100% of the answer is listed. Constant participation is mandatory, just a horrible professor to have in an intro class.
Very poor teaching style as well as an incredibly hard grader. Amy will only give you close to full credit on an exam question if it is word for word what is in the textbook plus more. Do not take her class unless you are willing to be marked extremely hard on topics that are not even covered in class

Understand how ppl think shes a tough grader but I also think its because the course material is difficult in itself & requires students to put in the work. I liked her. I think if you are engaged with her lectures they make sense and she explains things pretty well. The grading is tough in this class though for all of the assignments and exams.
This was by far one of the worst profs I have ever had Her test & midterm were reasonable but her case law memo assignment was horrible she is not specific enough with what she is looking for I went to her office hours and she told me the class was not for me by just assuming I did good on the midterm but not the assignment which affected my grade
Amy is an amazing professor! Her lectures are engaging and filled with opportunities to participate. 330 is very content heavy, so keep up with the readings. She offers a bonus opportunity and allows cheat sheets for both exams. Amy makes it clear what she is looking for on assignments, but definitely makes you work hard for your mark.

Amy has such a clear passion which made the difficult content easier to digest. Ive never done a rating here but I wanted to express how much she bettered my experience. Her slides dont include the full content, so going to class is very helpful (she does post audio recordings). She explains very clearly and has clear criteria for assignments.
Passionate prof but god are the lectures the worst stuff I have ever sat through in my life. Slides are dull with a few words at most as she talks in circles expecting us to catch every word and come out as experts in the end. Stay away, because this course is basically expected to be self taught through the textbook.
You need to be willing to put in the work. She is very clear in her grading criteria and I honestly like her. For all in class assignments, she explicitly tells you a week in advance what cases you need to look at and she also drops your lowest mark. For midterms she explicitly tells you what to look at and she allows you to have a cheat sheet.
Don't expect to learn in class as it seems like it's expected that you should know everything BEFORE she teaches it in class. In lectures she just yaps about everything and nothing all at once. She makes no sense. She doesn't teach and expects us to read the entire textbook from front to back and learn ourselves.
Amy is a very passionate prof! I think she is a great prof who makes her expectations quite clear from the beginning of the course. She emphasizes that you need to keep up with readings and come to lectures. Her tests are quite reasonable if you have done everything you need to. Marking is tough, but thats the result of the TA, not her!
Amy has NEVER been on time for a single lecture, even for the midterm, which took more time away from the in-class assignments that were extremely rushed to begin with. She doesn't give clear instructions or examples of how she wants us to do things so good luck with the memos. Doesn't give specific feedback so you'll never know what you did wrong!

Would not recommend. She was never on time, and lectures weren't helpful at all. The entire course is taught by the textbook. Her voice is very high pitched yet hoarse, and VERY LOUD, making it hard to listen to lectures.
In-class assignments are really hard to do well on them and the ta's are very hard markers. Her slides are really hard to understand and barely have any info. Interesting course if prof was better at teaching.
Dr. Conroy's course was incredibly frustrating. The assessments lacked clear instructions, and reaching out for help was nearly impossible as she and the TAs were very hard to approach and communicate with. The tutorials were the only helpful aspect, as I had to rely on classmates for support. Overall, extremely disappointing.
Amy Conroy was one of the worst profs I've ever during my experience at SFU so far. She is not suitable to be a professor. Her lectures lack information. She basically expects her students to learn the course by themselves through the textbook.The TA's are even disconnected with her and lack information from Dr Conroy.
Dr. Conroy's lectures lacked information and she expects you to teach the material to yourself via the textbook. If you do not like reading, DO NOT take this class as without reading all chapters of the text book you won't succeed. TA's are okay but lack any communication with Dr. Conroy it seems and can't really answer questions.
Amy was a tough professor because she didn't teach much in the lecture and expected you to read the textbook for every lecture. Her lecture slides were more boring than watching paint dry. She is an on the clock professor and is very stingy with flexibility and constantly replies with “look at the syllabus”. She rarely showed up on time to lecture.

Also, she's openly politically biased and happy to be so because she's "right" and is morally obligated to teach the next generation to think the way she does. People are too critical of Dr. Conroy. Yes, reading the chapter because lecture is a must, but that's because the lectures are meant to supplement and explain the readings further. I loved her class because instead of just reading the lectures slides AT us, she spoke TO us. She is engaging, and seems strict but her class isn't even hard. 10/10 prof
Amy is clearly passionate about both the subject and teaching. Success is determined by keeping up w lecture and regularly reviewing as it is content heavy. I treated the course like a 100 level crim class and failed the midterm. After putting in a bit more effort and attending TA/prof office hours i was able to get a 91 on the final.
I'm not sure why the other reviews on here are so bad. Amy was a good prof who gave decent lectures. People who did bad in the course must not have paid attention/read the textbook because the exams were mainly that based on that The in-class assignments were also on cases from the textbook so if you read that you were good to go.
I loved Amy's class for CRIM 230, hence I took a class with her again. This time around, I did not enjoy her class. She expected us to just teach ourselves using the textbook. Her hybrid lectures covered no proper material; it seemed as if she was unprepared and would keep repeating the same phrase about this being an advanced class.
DO NOT take this class for credits. Her lectures do not contain much material and she relies on the textbook to teach you. She would quite often go on tangents about things unrelated to the subject at hand. On top of that after the final she refused to post my mark and marked me as N until I met with her over zoom even into the following semester.
I've never known a teacher who talks SO FAST???? She rambles and just glazes over the important topics. She's SO rushed. Most of my classes you hear keyboards typing away for notes at any given time but her classes I've heard maybe 5 students type something at some points of the class and the slides are not helpful at all.
Her lectures are completely useless and I think she free balls them. Can only get a good grade if you memorize the textbook like it's the bible. Every written assignment will be based off aboriginal people. Should definitely not be teaching and probably shouldn't be incorporating her own political beliefs into the course as nobody is there for her!

Dr. Conroy is extremely passionate, not only about criminology, but also about teaching. She gives crystal clear guidelines for how to succeed and numerous opportunities to practice core skills before graded assignments. I never felt like I had to teach myself from the textbook. Her lectures reinforced the textbook and included practice activities.

Taken 5 courses with this prof she's a great lecturer (very engaging), has a clear structure & rubrics. Although she can be a hard marker she usually gives extra credit oppurtunities to raise your midterm/assignment grades. Very approachable for questions. Skim readings, go to lecture, take notes, practice qs & recall for tests and you'll do well.
She is a really nice person, but HOLY MOLY does she expect a lot from you. I like her feedback, but the feedback she gives is (in my opinion) way too nitpicky and shouldn't call for such a harsh mark. If you are following the rubric, expect to do triple the work because it will never be enough.
I took Crim 230 with Dr. Conroy last year. It was a hard course but I enjoyed the challenge and ended up with an A in the course. I'm currently taking Crim 332 online, my god. I've been working on the first graded assignment for DAYS and I just keep crying. The instructions make no sense and this is easily the hardest assignment I've ever had to do

The class is basically self-taught through the textbook. You dont get much out of lectures since they dont teach anything, and instead are short summaries of long readings. Instructions are vague, and youre left guessing what she actually wants. also it doesnt help that shes a tough grader - so take at your own risk!

If you want to take this class you have to know everything from the textbook like the back of your hand. If on an assignment or test you write a summary for a case you memorized from google instead of the textbook she will mark it wrong. She includes random questions she asks during lectures on the midterm so don't miss them.

I took CRIM135 with Amy and decided to take 230 with her again. She teaches to the class instead of reading from the slides and she knows what she's talking about, making it easier to grasp. Don't cram this class and do go to lecture because some things she says only during lecture WILL be tested. If you put in the work, you'll do good.

Yes, she's tough. Actively engage with the material, do the readings, and you'll pass. Don't blame your poor grade on the prof if you didn't put in the effort that she tells you to put in. She is intense and her exams/assignments are challenging, but she certainly deserves better than two stars.
Does not set students up for success. Grading criteria is NEVER clear and assignments feel like repetition exercises, not genuine learning. Strict criteria and dry content is expected for 135 and 230, but she made 332 brutal instead of interesting. Feels like shes trying to lower your grade every chance she gets instead of supporting your learning.

Not an easy class, but these comments aren't fair. She was irritated after our midterm because so many students studied with AI and were misinformed. That is why she said she wouldn't change her exam style. You have to really put in the work to understand the content rather than just memorizing. I don't understand how this is a first-level university course. On her midterm, there was a question about a case that was only briefly mentioned and not memorable at all. The question only had the case name. If you want to get an A in this course, you basically have to memorize the entire book front to back. I don't recommend her class to anyone.
i actually like amy! she's definitely tough, and yes you have to read a lot, but i actually learn in her classes. as long as you actually put in effort and do not use chat gpt for your study cheats, you'll do fine. she's just a teacher you actually makes you put in effort. if crim is something that interests you, you will like her.
I like her lectures, but she often loses her train of thought. For example, on the final I recognized a handful of questions that she "went over" in class, but I couldn't remember the answer because she lost her train of thought and never got around to answering the question itself. Her tests are fair though and you get a cheat sheet (which is lowkey unhelpful cuz it's all application based but still it helps) Would not take again. She does not care about her students doing well. There was 2 memos, weekly assignments that required way more effort than what they are worth, a midterm and final. I will say questions on exams are similar to practice quizzes but she marks VERY hard. I would recommended taking a different class with different prof if possible! Not very approachable
I think Amy is an incredibly reasonable prof, as long as you actually read the textbook and apply yourself you will be fine. You have to study and it's not an easy pass but I think the class was interesting and the grading was fair but tough. The assignments and quizzes are easy as long as you prep and she drops your lowest grade.

This is a LAW class; it will be difficult: lots of reading & complex material. If you study, read the textbook, follow instructions, and take your time, it's easy. The class focuses on applying the law; you need to be thorough with your assignments. Amy isn't targeting you, she's lovely who wants students to do well but you need to put in the work.
The 100/200 lvl ratings aren't representative of the OL experience. She gives a 10 min lecture, that's not sufficient on the professors end. You will have to learn all the material on your own, she provides little guidance on the assignments until after the memo is graded.
Conroy is by far the worst prof I've had at SFU she was unorganized, often late, and so unapproachable. Asking for help or feedback always resulted in "did you read the course outline", "did you read the textbook", yes I did lady you're just confusing as hell. Her grading criteria's are very confusing and she does not state everything she wants. NO
Amy is a pretty good prof, yes there is a lot to read but she is clear on her expectations. the grading is not insanely harsh and she provides general feedback on how/why you might have done bad and how you can improve. if you want personal feedback she has office hours
Read the textbook, pay attention during lecture. She will often go off topic during lecture, but somehow the subjects she brushes over will still end up being on the exam. I didn't find her to be as bad as the ratings might suggest, but if you really hate reading then I wouldn't take this course with her. Fairly reasonable with marks at least.
With all the efforts put into reading, I still found the grading criteria for reflection assignments to be unclear and impossibly strict at times. Nevertheless, Amy did an exceptional job in structuring the course in a way that forces you to learn and deserve the grade. Not easy at all, but it was a very, very useful breadth elective.
