Great notes, straightforward about exams and homework, so helpful with everything - especially the final research paper - and fair grading. If you have half a brain and go to class, you'll get an A.
Amy rocks! She is so helpful and personable. The lectures are interesting, notes are straightforward... one of the best professors I've had at UA so far!
Her notes are somewhat difficult to follow and some test questions are ambiguous. But overall its a fairly easy class.
This class is rough. For a Gen Ed it requires too much time and thinking. She does random participation points in lecture, and you are required to go to section class. She puts the lecture up online in podcast and powerpoint, but the notes are tough to follow.
This was the Language INDIV
I found this to be the easiest class of my semester and the most interesting. You will be expected to create your own language. My final project was around 15 pages but it's broken down throughout the semester so by the time it's due you have already done everything. Interesting examples and there are plenty of opportunities for clarification.
the Language course has to be one of the coolest gen-eds offered at UA. be prepared to learn a lot of neat things you have never thought of before, and have an awesome and enthusiastic instructor. furry animal pictures on her powerpoints, and lots of encouragement to go talk to her. she rocks. good class. get a good TA for section though.
good.
Need to attend lectures in order to do well on tests, but the language projects are pretty much the easiest considering she makes a template to follow. You do need a good TA. Jason Ginsburg was really easy but super boring and messed up a lot on grading.
Sometimes it was hard to determine which information was important.
Upper division courses are a walk in the park compared to this class. This was the worst class I've taken thus far. There are so many minute details in all of the assignments, and it's as if she expects you to have no other obligations then fulfilling the work required for her class. Truly awful
This was one of the worst classes that I have ever taken. The class is complete useless, my T.A. completely incompetent. Then, there is this project that you have to do "Invent Your own Language"! It really isn't your language because you are graded on it, it is more of there language. I am trying to warn people don't take this class!!!
SO, it ook this class thinking that I would find it interesting, being that I really like to play with language and stuff. I was completely wrong. Amy Fountain and her obsession with putting stupid animals on all of her slides kind of annoyed me. She was not the worst herself, but not the best by far. The course was terrible though.
She's very passionate about what she teaches, but the lectures are really boring. I fell asleep all too often. It's a really easy class and the assignments seem kind of pointless, but it's not a terrible class. Super easy and super boring.
I love Amy Fountain! She is the sweetest lady you will ever meet. Go to her office hours and she will give you cookies. This class was super easy. Go to lecture to get participation quiz points as well as learn. Go to discussion because you have to. Do your language project and your homework and you will for sure recieve and A!
I loved Dr. Fountain she was a hoot. She made class fun and exciting with her love of all things language. I do however have a warning for those who wish to take a blow off class. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! You have to come to class and do your work. So long as you try you will do good. Go and visit her she'll always help you out.
Amy is the best prof I've ever had. She is enthusiastic, energetic, and really nice. The class had a lot of reading and knew nobody did it, but she still made lectures really interesting and was extremely helpful. The term paper was worth half the grade but was a really liberal grader. My paper deserved a C- but she gave me an A. Not to be missed!
all she talks about is animals. You have to create your own language...not fun at all. and the section instructors are awful
This class is terrible. Grading criteria is ridiculous and reports are generally a waste of time. Too much tedious work for a Tier 1 gen ed. Don't take this class unless you want to spend a lot of time on homework and still possibly receive zero credit for format issues.. Worst Class of the semester!
By far one of the worst Gen Eds available. This should be for Linguistics majors. If you want to devote hours upon hours on the stupid subject matter discussed in this class take it, if not take any other class but this one. And the TA's are awful especially the creepy balding one named Jason.
drop this class, it's HORRIBLE! the homework is ridiculous and takes at least 2-3 hours to do. the material has nothing to do with anythig useful in life unless you want to be a linguist...
Professor Fountain is one of the best teachers in my opinion. Some other people who rated her said there is hours upon hours of homework. This is not true at all. The most difficult assignment all semester is Field Notebook 3, which only takes 3 hours at most. I have not studied for a test all semester and I got A's on both tests so far.
This class is very boring and VERY useless. Its pretty easy but let me say again it is absolutely BORING and attending lecture isnt mandatory all her notes are on d2l
disregard what that person said about attendance. attendance is not required if you want to loose 10% of your total grade. so it is in your best interest to attend class, but you could sleep every through every lecture(as i did) and earn an A. This class is full of BS projects that an 6th grader can do. oh the projects are worth 40% of your grade
oh its me again, and the projects that people below me are crying about took me no longer than an hour to complete. The project requires you to make up an IMAGINARY language. common, you tell me, how long should that take.
I thought this class was going to be interesting, but it definitely does not apply to anything in the real world and is excruciatingly boring!! Don't take it, huge waste of time
Whether or not you enjoy this class really depends on your section instructor. I had an awesome one, so I loved it (Colin Gorrie). There is a lot of work in this class, but it's paced well. If you keep up with it, it's not so bad and the tests are pretty easy. If you go to class and at least skim the readings (use the index!) the class is a breeze.
Boring / Difficult Course. If you are a slacker don't take this class. Most of class time is spent looking at pictures of animals (seriously). If you work hard you'll probably get a "B" Max. Slackers get C's and D's. NOT AN EASY "A".
This class is hard, and it sucks! All you do in class is look at pictures of animals, and come test time, you don't know what is going on!
DROP DROP DROP!!!!!! the most work you will probably ever have for a gen-ed and will never use in real life. i think i learned more about animals than i did about linguistics. i'm an A student but i BARELY got a B in this class.
Whoever doesn't get an A in this class is just a dumbass and didn't pay attention at lectures. There are weekly assignments, so don't fall behind. If you get Colin Gorrie for a section instructor, you are lucky! He's awesome. Do well on the first two exams, and you won't have to take the final!
Amy Fountain is a great linguistics professor however INDV 101 language is a class to be avoided at all costs! I had fun but it was way more work than should be required of a gen. ed. course. I would suggest her other classes but not INDV 101.
This course is very interesting in the beginning of the semester but after the first test, this class just gets even harder. I was able to maintain an A because of the easy lecture, section, hw, and reports. This class is just too much work and almost everyone will not use linguistics in real life unless they are majoring in it.
I loved this class! Amy (yes she lets you call her by her first name) is the sweetest teacher I have had at the U of A! Go to office hours, she will love you for it. I reviewed for the exams maybe for a hour and got an A. This class has a lot of work but it is really easy! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU LIKE TO SLACK OFF YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO THINK!
Awesome teacher! Extremely intelligent. The class is really fun and you learn a lot as well.
Dr. Fountain's class was not interesting at all. I thought that the discussion classes were kinda worthless, and the class I had was way too early to be talking about linguistics. Unless you have a creative imagination the Language Documentation project will be a pain. You must read the book or you will not pass the tests.
Had her last year and i thought it was really easy class. as long as you follow instructions, its a breeze! sometimes, assignments were time consuming... so work ahead! :D
Every single slide she posted had pictures of 'cute' animals that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the class. She likes to push her ideals onto her students and will test you on them (of course reducing your score if you disagree with her). The class had potential to be interesting but all she ever talked about were cute animals. Avoid her.
Fountain is a bit quirky-- she puts pictures of cute fluffy animals on every lecture slideshow. But she is an interesting and VERY helpful professor. Class is easy for the most part. All the lectures are on online podcasts, so you don't have to go...I recommend it though, it's easy and helps. But, CAVEAT: don't take this class if you hate grammar.
Most boring class I've taken at UA
Luckily I dropped this class at the last posible moment. Extrememly boring, uses every possible D2L trinket to give you hw, and there are assignments that are worth more than the exams themselves. Proceed with extreme caution...
Fountian is a nice lady, but the class is not a piece of cake. You actually have to study for the essay exams to do well. The good thing is they drop your lowest grade in every category. I actually liked this class and it is definietly do-able. If you go to SI before the essay exams they help you SO much. I would reccomend this class.

I was kicking myself for talking this class the first 3 weeks but as the semester progresses it gets easier. It isn't the most interesting class, but it's not that bad. It is VERY helpful to have a good TA!
Fountain is very nice and really really enjoys linguistics. She lightens up the class with her Animals of the Day slides and points out the kids in class. I really enjoyed this class, it was REALLY hard though. Yu have to study to get a good grade. Don't take it if you are not interested in linguistics, you won't appreciate her or the class.
I found this class the right amount of work for a gen-ed. Amy (Dr. Fountain) definitely made lectures fun and interesting, and the course was a great introduction to Linguistics. Yes, there are the cute animals on every slide. They rock. If you're looking for a well-organized gen-ed, take this one!:)
I didn't find this class very hard if you do all the work. I think the difficulty of the class mostly depends on which TA you have because they do almost all of the grading. Attendance is not mandatory for the lectures, and she posts all the slides online. Overall, I thought she was a good teacher.
The class can be interesting. Amy is very nice and cares about what she teaches. Sometimes she speaks like she is teaching kindergartners. The quizzes are online and there are discussions, but they are very easy. Another bonus in the class is that for many grade parts the lowest score is dropped. Essay exams aren't too bad.
Very sweet, in a geeky sort of way. Her lectures could be SO boring, especially when you got to sounds. If you do well in class and ok on exams you dont have to take the final. AND she drops the lowest of everything: quzzes, discussions etc. She LOVES little fuzzy animals. Seriously. A pretty easy way to boost GPA.
Fountain is very nice, loves animals (there is somesort of fuzzy animal on every lecture slide!) Lecture is boring otherwise, and this class is so HARD. Do not take this class if you have no interest in linguistics! WAAAAY too hard for a gen-ed!!!
She is the muggle world's equivalent to Professor Trelawney. She is a nut! She loves what she does though, and lectures aren't mandatory. Posts everything online. And quizzes and tests are all open-note and pretty easy, though time-consuming. 3 papers and 3 tests, but drops the lowest of your test scores. Discussion groups are mandatory though
Nice lady. Do the work; if you have questions, ask. Not hard at all. I aced it. This class is nothing to sweat over, so it's a good one to fill that Ged Ed requirement.
Good teacher, sometimes the material is dry but overall a good class. Fairly easy, got an A without too much effort. Go to class, discussion, and do all the readings. The only hard part is the quizzes so be prepared when you take them.
So. This was the least interesting class I've ever taken. If you have no interest in linguistics, do not take the class. The teacher is amazing and extremely helpful and one of the nicest people at the U o A, don't get me wrong, it's just that the material is SO boring.
Amy is extremely nice, understanding, and eager to help. The class itself might introduce some issues, both scientific and philosophical, concerning linguistics to receptive students, but the overall feel of the class and attempts at teaching students to be "scholars" are rudimentary at best. Skip unless absolutely necessary or compelled. 2 stars.
She was great! The class was really easy, I thought. Making up your own language is a piece of cake. You would click your clicker in the beginning of class and you could leave and still get participation points. Section is required but definitely helps you out when it comes down to your assignments. I recommend this class!
She is an interesting and entertaining professor. Her grading is not very fair, it is way to easy to get a 0 on a huge assignment for something not necessary, especially for the amount of work put into it. The assignments took me hours and I still never got 100% She is a good teacher, but the assignments are way to unfair, there are no 2nd chances.
Pretty easy class. Make sure and follow the assignment guidelines exactly and you cant go wrong. I got a zero on 1 assignment because i didn't double check for a header so make sure and review your work. She is passionate and my section instructor Dane Bell is pretty good as well.
This class is honestly just a waste of time. Or maybe I just feel that way because my discussion leader sucks. He is not helpful at all, and I keep scoring lower on my assignments although I spend a lot of time on them. Bad teaching, in my opinion
I think whether or not this class is hard depends on the discussions. When I took it the lecture was super easy. lowest of everything is dropped (I didn't even need to take the last exam) and everything was on D2L anyway. Material can be dry if you're not interested but attendance wasn't mandatory..I normally skipped since I fell asleep anyway
Extremely easy class. If you do work I think it?s hard NOT to get an A. This class is just a bunch of busy work. She drops your lowest quiz and test grade too. I personally found the class a little boring but Dr. Fountain is really nice and passionate about what she?s teaching. This is a great class if you?re looking for an easy A gen ed.
If you can attend class and follow directions, success is easy in this class. Amy is, if a little dry at times, very passionate about her subject matter. The exams are all online and she drops your lowest score. I thought this class was a piece of cake if you show up and do the work. Be sure to follow all instructions for assignments.
AMAZING teacher, SUPER BORING material, at least for me. This class can be very easy if you work hard in the beginning. Honors students.. take the honors section!!! Not much extra effort. Suggestion: Work very hard the 1st half of the semester and attend all lectures so that at the end, you don't have to take the last exam or show up to class.
The class itself can be very boring if you're not interested in the material. It's pretty easy though she just doesn't make the final project really clear and she can be a bit mean when she grades your essays. Since its an online class you can generally get away with an easy A without doing much work
She is a wonderful teacher! She is very enthusiastic about the material, and the class was fun and relatively easy. There is sometimes a lot of work, but it's not hard to get an A. My TA was amazing, too!
Even though I got a B in this class i have to say that it was really hard for me. You have to create your own language with phonetic symbols and explain how you make up sentences and how to pronounce your words so that was hard. But if you're interested learning about language and how it works then take it but expect big projects.
She is a little nutty, and obsessed with animals. The class overall is a little labor intensive, not an easy gen-ed though it is interesting if you like language. There are assignments all year that lead up to the final project, all tests are quizzes you get a week to complete ONLINE. Lecture is mandatory because you have electronic clickers...
Very sweet, offers extra credit, but there is a LOT of homework and projects and reading throughout the semester. All of the quizzes and tests are online, and your lowest of everything gets dropped. Though it is a bit of work the class is very interesting and is worth it if you put in the effort.
Don't be fooled by the 101 section number, this class can be hard if language isn't your thing. There is A LOT of assigned work, and the final paper is somewhere in the range of 18 to 25 pages. Its not as bad as it sounds because you pretty much write it throughout the course of the semester but don't sign up for this class thinking its an easy A.
This was a ridiculously hard class. DO NOT TAKE IT. There is way too much work for a simple tier 1 class. She doesn't teach well, she's crazy and obsessed with animals in a weird way. The lectures are boring and she is just overall not a good teacher. She expects way too much out of kids that aren't even linguistics majors.
This "102" course is no easy A! There is a lot of work that has to be put into this class even for those not even majoring in Linguistics. She does not like people talking in class and she will call you out on it if you do. Her final is like 18-30 pages, not hard, but dont take this class if your not willing to put the effort for a Tier I course.
An amazing teacher. Very fun, intelligent, and passionate about what she teaches. She's not obsessed with animals, she just puts cute animal photos into her slides to be fun. There is a lot of reading and work involved, but it's all to learn valuable and interesting information. A good class for people who actually want to learn something.
Dr. Fountain is a great teacher! She's an animal lover so she incorporates pictures of animals in to all of her slides which is entertaining. Her passion for linguistics and Native American languages is what makes this class so great. I highly recommend this class.
This class was AMAZING! I never knew how fascinating linguistics could be. You do a lot of reading but it is all very helpful. Amy is such a cool professor and she puts animals in her slides. She is really helpful and wants her students to succeed. I would highly recommend this class
This class is useless & hard unless you have a passion for Linguistics. The projects we have to do are insane. You have to invent your own language. I mean it's cool to have some fun in your work, but it's not all that. I don't recommend it.
This class is terrible! Just dont take it and save yourself the trouble. The TA's that she has are terrible as well. Ya they try and help you but they'll screw you over at the same time. Class is extremely boring! Unless you really like linguistics don't take the class...
I really don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about. As long as you do the readings and pay attention in class you will come away with an A. Dr. Fountain is so helpful and loves what she is teaching. Super easy and interesting class that I'd recommend to anyone needing an easy Indv.
She's perfect <3 I hope she teaches all my classes
Dr. Fountain is a great professor, as this was my first linguistics class, she had managed to pull me into the subject. she is also very nice and and sweet, and she cares about your grade. I loved her class,
Dr. Fountain's class was an easy A. Show up to lectures, take notes (or print off slides/listen to her podcasts) and all her slides have cute animals on them! Tests are online, open note and book. The "create your own language" project is fun and interesting (the homework) is light and is due at the end of week. Great teacher and class. 5/5 stars
She's very nice, and a good lecturer! Do the assignments and show up to class and its not hard to get an A. Everything (including tests) is online. How hard the grading is depends on your TA, but she's very clear on what she wants. Class definitely recommended.
Interesting class. Lectures are posted online and are very much the same as the textbook (though take note, attendance is recorded with clickers). She wrote the textbook and presents the material really well. If you think languages are interesting and want an easy gen-ed, take this class.
Literally show up to class and you'll get a large part of your grade. All quizzes and both exams are online, so you won't have a hard time with that. She is a fantastic teacher, but beware the section instructors for the Friday classes. Some are grad students and suck the life out of you.
Professor fountain is super nice but her lectures are pretty boring. Attendance is mandatory and you get participation points for every day. Start each homework assignment early because they take a while. It isn't a hard class but it takes up A LOT of time.
Super easy A for a gen ed requirement, and you actually leave there with a good deal of knowledge about linguistics. All tests are online and open-book, so you can just look up the answers. She makes the class incredibly interesting. I recommend taking this for sure.
class is NOT an esay A it is hard and one of my most difficult gen eds. DONT take it if you dont need it
I hated this class with a passion. I did not find her helpful at all and assignments are ridiculous. You constantly have to use her work which is unclear unless your familiar with the topic. I would not recommend this class!!!
Seems nice, but that is it. Class requires a lot of work. Do not take this class unless you are going into Linguistics. There is sometimes a gap between quizzes/exams and lectures. Two exams and about 10 reading quizzes. Take another GenEd, please.
This class is not hard whatsoever. The book chapters can be long, but it is not necessary to read them. I did every single of my quizzes and essays without reading the chapters and got A's. She is a great person, she knows what she is talking about and is very passionate about it. Plus she loves animals so she has cute pictures in her slides.
This class was definitely one of my easier classes. Attendance is not mandatory but just go, she gives you points. I ended the class with an A. Effort is required for the projects. All the quizzes and exams are open note and online. If you are not lazy and can do easy work, take this class.
This is a really gen. ed! try to attend all lectures because your grade could eventually be higher than 100%. Everything is ONLINE, I, honestly, didn't need to go to lectures to do the assignments or quizzes because it's all online and explained to you.
Dr. Fountain was a great professor! She was clearly enthusiactic about this subject, and had some fantastic real-life examples from her research. She provided an online manuscrpit of her own textbook, which was pretty clear and FREE! Always helpful, and all tests were online. Be sure to show up for lecture.
Most of the time, I didn't pay attention in class because all of the lecture notes are online and quizzes and tests are online, but this class does require some work. The field report is a bit difficult, but you have more than enough resources to succeed. And she offers so much extra credit. You have to try really hard to fail this class...
Dr. Fountain's class was something I was not interested in at all but I found her class to be an easy A. The field notebooks are rather long, but she puts EXACTLY what she wants in them on D2L. She also responds to emails quickly if you have any questions. I never payed attention in lecture and I was fine on the projects. Definitely not hard.
I had her for my honors colloquium and we learned about native american languages in Arizona. She was extremely nice and made it somewhat interesting considering the topic and that it was at 8 am
I took this class online, and it is by far my least favorite class. There is a lot of reading and a lot of work. Don't listen to the previous comments, I did, and I hate myself for it. I wish I had never taken it. She is very specific w/what she wants, but the time required for everything is ridiculous. Summary: WAY TOO MUCH work for a gen ed.
Dr. Fountain is clear and precise. The projects and homeworks are easy. The hardest part of this class is paying attention, unless you have an interest in this subject expect to be bored.
Class is ridiculously boring. It's so boring that you'll never remember what the lectures were about and never learn anything. Very technical stuff. Lots of resources to help out was the only cool thing. But work was incredibly tedious and the readings are about 40 PDF pages on average. NEVER take this class. There are easier.
Good class to take online. What she wants on assignments is very clear. Follow the instructions and you'll get a A. My interest in the subject did increase throughout the course.
Lectures are ridiculously boring and hard to sit through, yet they're mandatory with clicker points. All assignments are online, which is nice, but some of the projects take way more effort than what a gen ed should be. Expect to take a lot of time on the field notebooks and homework.
The class is extremely hard to not sleep in. Mine was in the morning and I could barely stay awake. It's extremely boring. Yet you have to go because she does clicker points, which will screw you in the end if you don't go. Overall, she is pretty easy. The Field Notebooks can take time though
This class really isn't that bad. The only problem are the field notebooks, which can be time consuming. I rarely payed attention in class, only going for the clicker points, and I still pulled off an A. It's a course that pretty much sets everything up so that you get an A. 20+ extra credit points offered as well to help. Take it for honors credit
The class itself is pretty easy. She has field notebooks that aren't hard to do, they're just time consuming. The quizzes are hard because she don't talk about that information in class, therefore, you have to read the text book. Lectures are mandatory because she does clicker attendance, A lot of work for a GenEd.
I love the class, and the homework went along with the final big project. Everything was online, the text, the notes/slides, even class recordings. The only thing I didn't like was she obsession with critiquing student emails. It's rude.
Easy A. Class is 80% freshman, so she teaches like she's teaching kindergarten. Go to class for clicker questions, but you do NOT need to pay attention. All self explanatory, or you can google it. Be aware that all assignments & quizzes are due Friday nights at 10PM, which makes it super easy to forget things are due.
Very nice teacher. The assignments were long, but easy. If you read the assignments online and ask your TA for help, you will get an A. Only needed a 3% for the final, which was online and open note. Very good class and great teacher.
Amy Fountain is funny, insightful and engaging. Her class was a refreshing break in my day.
This class was pretty easy. I was surprised I got a B because there were a few reading quizzes and homeworksI did poorly on.But at the same time, I was just lazy Attending class is mandatory but u can miss a few classes. Field Notebooks were easy but time consuming. Honestly if you want a Gen Ed that isn't too time consuming, DON'T TAKE THIS ONE.
This class is very technical. Besides the reading quizzes, the grade is based on the mid term and final and a create your own language project. The project is very technical! if you pay attention you will pass but the class is not very interesting. I probably wouldn't recommend unless you like being nit-picked on your work...
The lecture is extremely bland. She knows what she's talking about, and is very articulate, but easily puts the class to sleep. A bit more work than the average gen ed but it isn't all too bad. Take this class if you want an A on your transcript but not if you don't want to do very much work. Show up to class for sure.
Best teacher of the semester! She really wants her students to succeed! Tough but fair. Very approachable. Do the reading quizzes with the coinciding class and you can't fail. There is 1 term paper, but she pretty much holds your hand the whole way. She offers extra credit. You have to try hard NOT to get an A.
Attendance isn't mandatory. Overall, an easy A, just a lot of effort required for the Language Project. Exams are all open book and over the course of a week. Kinda boring.
Great class if you need an easy gen ed. It was actually interesting and I barely put in work and got an A. She gives a lot of extra credit and is very helpful and nice.
she's really nice and knows what she's talking about. attendance is mandatory and the class is easy but time consuming, its not worth the effort for a tier 1 gen ed especially if you get a terrible TA. most are nice but there are those few that don't like to give As. quizzes and tests are open book but the project really determines the final grade.
This teacher is very nice. She try's to be entertaining and she is very sweet. Tests are kind of tough but overall the class is very easy and interesting.
This is NOT an english class. It is basically another foreign language credit because none of it is in english. Very lengthy projects due every week so if you have zero long term interest in linguistics, I advise against taking this class.
Long assignments due every week, material isn't that interesting, reading quizzes are ok but those are also every week so it can get tedious. Overall, if you are not going into linguistics as a career, do not take this class; seems more like an upper division than just a gen-ed that freshmen and sophomores would take.
projects hard super confusing due EVERY WEEK long reading assignments with a quiz EVERY WEEK Tests online open note but long and HARD.. the book is NO HELP. Amy is a nice person but a mean teacher, she will not give you the benefit of the doubt Do not work with other people or give them credit SHE WILL GIVE YOU A CODE OF CONDUCT MARK don't take it!
Do not take this class if you are not a Linguistics major and don't need it. Amy is cool but her lectures are a waste of time but you NEED to go for the clicker points. It is wayyyy too much work for a Tier 1 Gen Ed and no where worth the time that you put in it. Also your grade on big projects can depend entirely on if you have a good TA.
Boring subject overall, need to go to class for clicker points, the language project is a lot of work and is very specific. all quizzes and exams are untimed and open note. if you turn in everything, go to lecture and section classes and do all the work and get C's on the field notebooks and exams, youll easily get a B in the class
There are quite a few quizzes and tests, however they are all online, open note. They're easy enough if you take the time to do them. AttendanceParticipation really makes a difference, and I almost got a B because I skipped a lot of classes. Group paper takes some work, but the guidelines were clear enough. She's such a happy professor.
There is a lot of work for this class, but the directions to each assignment are given in detail for everything. Participation points are very important for your grade as well. All tests and quizzes are open note and untimed online. If you do everything that is expected you will easily get at least a B.
Amy is a very nice professor that wants her students to succeed. However, there are A LOT of assignments and quizzes that take up many hours of one's time. The class is very doable but prepare yourself to spend about 3 hours on each field notebook assignment (there are 4 drafts and 4 final drafts). Quizzes and exams are online and open note.
Ms. Fountain is a terrible teacher. She is extremely vague and confusing, and doesn't help at all. I don't recommend taking any classes with her as the teacher.
This class is fairly easy, however, expect to spend a lot of time on her homework assignments as they are pretty lengthy. The tests are open note and she gives you about a week to complete them. Participation points are super important as they often help boost your grade. Overall, Amy is a very nice professor and her class is pretty interesting.
Amy is really nice, but I took her Linguistics class online and I regretted in about a month into the semester. There's a ton of work involved. She has you do this Field Notebook project where you have to make up your own language throughout the semester, it's not hard, but its a lot of work. Don't take this course online.
There is way too much work in this class for a Gen Ed. Projects & quizzes pretty much every week. Pass on this class it was the most annoying class I have ever taken at the UofA. Plus they grade all your assignments very harshly. All the assignments are very weird and confusing as well.
I did not like Amy whatsoever. There was too much work required for this class and it honestly just felt like busy work. She is a harsh grader and has no sympathy for you whatsoever. You would ask for help and she would have a rude tone in her voice and tell you to find it yourself before you ask her. I dropped the class and I am so relieved.
There's just too much work for a gen-ed course. the Field Note Book assignments take a lot of time and it would get confusing at first. To be honest, the in class lecture is OK, she actually gets you to understand the basics of linguistic, but the projects are unnecessary because you don't learn anything from it.
Interesting and easy gen ed. Amy treats everyone with respect. The papers are long, but are not essays. If you follow the rubric, you'll get an A and be done in an hour or so. You create your own language throughout the course of the semester, so have fun with it! Some reading, but all easy. I recommend highly.
Professor Fountain is a very sweet and understanding woman who makes class fun and interesting by doing a lot of interactive stuff. She gives good examples so the content makes a lot more sense after she lectures on it. She assigns a lot of reading.
Mrs. Fountain's class is very difficult. Expect a 8-page report due almost EVERY week. The quizzes are hard and not on the topics we learn in class, only the readings. The readings can range from 10 pages to 45 pages depending on the topic. I suggest you don't take this class if it is not required, it's not worth the learning.
Hardest class I have ever taken, love love love Amy, she's funny and tries very hard to involve the students during lecture, but very tough subject to teach/explain on a level that non linguists will understand. Definitely switch out if placed in this for any reason. Extremely hard.
Amy is a nice lady who cares about her students, but the subject is difficult. I made the mistake of thinking "Oh, linguistics sounds cool!" I wish I had taken some boring africana studies class instead. Not fun.
The class is quite big, but the subject matter is quite interesting. The professor is very ambitious which is inspiring. This class is very fun.
this will be interesting for you only if you like the science of languages or at least okay with it, if you don't then save your time and don't enroll. all quizzes and exams are timeless so it lessens the pressure! you have to put a little bit of your effort tho and don't worry about your grades bc amy is very kind and offers a lot of ECs
Amy is a really sweet, happy person and a great professor. She clearly loves Linguistics a ton, and she's really approachable. Lots of participation points, one large project (broken into manageable pieces) and not an excessive amount of time needed. She made class fun and interesting, I would absolutely take this course with this professor again.
Really interesting class, and amazing teacher. It wasn't too much work, and it was very open ended so you are in charge of your own research project. Amy is incredibly thoughtful, kind, smart, and interesting. She will give you endless feedback and is always constructive. This was my favorite class this semester.
Lectures are extremely entertaining and engaging. All tests online and untimed. Many assignments split throughout semester with drafts and feedback, allowed for lots of creativity. Many extra credit opportunities, If you're not interested at all in language, you probably won't enjoy this class. I thought it was the best class I took this semester.
I really enjoyed have Amy as a professor. She is super kind and respects her students. The topics she talks about can be a little boring at times, but she tries to make her lectures interesting. There is one main project throughout the semester that you work on week by week. It's not difficult though. I would love to take another class with her!
She is always very enthusiastic during lectures and she encourages students to speak up during class. Her grading is very easy and she gives A's on all the homework as long as you put in effort. The big project that is required is fairly simple as long as you know what you want to study. Overall, great teacher. Would highly recommend!
This rating seems way too low. Dr. Fountain is a field-passionate, knowledgeable professor who sets high standards for scholarly work. This class was the most challenging Gen-Ed I've ever taken, but VERY rewarding. Expectations are clear, but intensive. Her love for language and people makes fun out of subject matter that could otherwise be dry.
This was my first class with Amy, and I think she is incredible. I wish I had the time to take more of her courses. She is an excellent, thorough, and thoughtful lecturer. And she seems like a very very kind, intelligent, and interesting woman. She is very passionate about language and it shows.
Prof Fountain loves linguistics so much+that rubs off on her students in lecture. There are only 2 exams: the midterm and the final (both online!). There are a lot of reading quizzes but they're open note with no time limit. Go to class+get TONS of bonus points from clicker questions. Took this class for honors credit+am easily getting an A
Amy is the best! She spreads her love of linguistics to those who may not have otherwise found it interesting. However, do NOT take this class if you're looking for an easy gen ed. It's a ton of work every week, but it's possible to get an A if you really work for it.
Amy is awesome. She is passionate about linguistics, which makes her class interesting. The semester long project is a lot of work, but it taught me way more than I would have learned without it. Amy wants all of her students to succeed and is always available to answer questions. Overall awesome class, just be ready to work for your grade.
Amy is one of the nicest and most entertaining professors I've ever had. Her lectures are always interesting and you can definitely see her passion for linguistics come through! Stay on top of the semester project and you'll easily get an A; Amy is readily available by email and she keeps the D2L materials very well-organized. Definitely recommend!
One of the worst classes I have taken. Lecture is mandatory, but not beneficial. She spent most of lecture taking irrelevant polls and stating random facts. She would then assign very difficult and complicated homework assignments which she spent no time discussing in class. Very difficult assignments with no class time spent explaining them.
Amy was a great professor and her lectures are very entertaining. I love her animal pictures on her lecture slides. For this course, you do long field report about a language that you are going to create yourself. It's a fun project and it makes up the majority of your grade. There are weekly quizzes and two major tests and they are open book.
This class has a lot of assignments; however most take a total of 20 minutes to complete, and they grade very nicely. They offer you so many point opportunities that you can earn over 100% in the class. This is a really fun gen-ed, do not be scared off by lots of assignments because 90% of them are easy :) Also, Amy is very sweet and entertaining.
Amy is one of the best professors I've seen. She's always in a good mood, and she breathes life into a subject that is boring to most students. One of the best parts of this class is she offers the textbook free online. The readings from the textbook are key, but even if you don't read them she explains the concepts well enough in class.
Very easy class. You don't have to buy any books since she wrote the book and gives it to you on D2L. the main grade is a semester long project that is done is stages. the week before a stage is due you have a practice assignment that shows you exactly how to do the stage. midterms are online over several days and open book, open notes. great prof!
So honestly I don't know if it was the class or her that was so boring. She's a nice lady but, she was al over the place and I always drifted off. I never paid attention in lecture but the main project was easy. The midterm and final are online with notes. Take the online quizzes by having the computer scan the pages for key word (saved me hours).
It was a really boring class, she takes attendance by using clickers. TA was a tough grader and barely helped out at all. DONT RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS AT ALL!! there is a semester long project that is really boring and unnecessary.
The lectures are so boring and everyone is either on their phones or sleeping. Your grade depends on whichever TA you've got (most of them grade hard). The class is based on single project , which is difficult to complete. The quizzes and readings take at least two hours to complete. Avoid this class if necessary, had to drop out.
The subject was boring but she was a good lecturer. The grading depends on your TA for the discussion. Class isn't mandatory, but they are for clicker points, so it's easy points if you do go. It is really easy to get an A. There is homework due on the Monday of each week but go to lecture and take that time to work on the hw and you'll be fine.
Homework overload especially for a general education course.
I took LING201 with Dr. Fountain and it was great. The homework is all online, which is nice because you can pace yourself before the due date. She is also fun to talk to.
Dr. Fountain teaches a broad overview of linguistics pretty well and makes it as interesting as she can. No textbook, attendance is mandatory (just go... seriously). Weekly assignments and a really cool semester-long project in which you make your own language. Definitely one of the more fun gen-eds where you'll learn some mindblowing stuff.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. There is definitely a substantial amount of work that goes into it; however, the class is laid out so well that it is very easy to stay on track and get everything done and with good grades. Plus the content is really interesting, even if you're not a linguistics major! She is sure to accommodate us newbies!
Dr. Fountain was a really great professor; the main project was a cumulative creating your own language project, which was really fun and interesting. She's also a really nice and relatable person!
Amy has a bubbly personality which is nice because she is easy to confront, but during lectures sometimes it was hard to follow or pay attention because i felt like i was in an elementary class. She asks for a lot of class participation by asking questions during class about the material.
She is super nice and engaging, but the class is way too demanding for gen ed. The projects are kind of ridiculous and she doesn't give enough time to complete them. The lectures feel very useless. Would NOT recommend this class unless you REALLY love or want to pursue linguistics. Uses clickers for participation.
Prof Fountain is the best teacher/person in the world. She loves her class and genuinely cares about you. A lot of your grade is dependant on the TA, (some discussions will get worse grades than others) but the class is structured gives you plenty of ways to get around a bad TA. Clicker points in class, but she drops plenty so no stress.
Just show up to class and pay half attention. And for the language creation project that is 47% of your grade, just keep up with it and you're good. Easy A. There are also some pretty cool things in linguistics if you're interested even a little bit.
I loved this class, and Amy is a huge part of why. Its designed to help students acclimate to college-level classes from high school, so the main project is very clearly outlined and feedback is regularly provided. A great gen ed, and Amy is so sweet and open, she feels very approachable. Interesting lectures w daily participation points
She's fine. Honestly, it's annoying how she brings her political beliefs in to the class and harps about native american rights and bringing back their language, but what the can I do about it. It's survivable. Just be prepared to hear "native americans were more civilized despite not even having written language," or "why don't we teach cherokee?"
Please do yourself a favorand dont take this class unless you already know you love linguistics. It is a gen-ed, but it doesnt reflect it. extremely difficult for no reason. D2l page hard to navigate. grade depends on TA . just could be so much simpler. huge paper involved aswell. its doable. so many better options for fullfilling this requirement
Wow wow wow! I loved taking LING150A1 with Dr. Fountain. You learn the basics of lingustics by making your own language!! It is challenging and you definitely have to put in the work, but she is very approcable and helpful and the criteria are straightforward at each step. It is a wonderful intro to something we all use but know so little about!
I'm currently in her class and her project is so confusing and it's seriously affecting my mental health trying to figure it out. do not take this class unless you have to. I am so confused in this class
Professor Fountain is really nice in genuine. Downside I have never been so bored in a class in my entire life. Would save yourself the pain just take a different Gen-ed. Material is not really useful in life or school, and does not make sense. Waste of time.
Dr. Fountain is amazing! Her lectures are very informative, and she's an amazing human being. The final project for this class is a paper about a self-created language, and it's tons of fun if you are at all interested in linguistics! Just make sure to write down due dates, you don't want to get too far behind. I cannot recommend this class enough!
Took this class as a gen-ed my first semester and I think it was a really good choice. Amy is an interesting and caring person and great teacher to have. The class is centered around one major project but the directions for the project are very detailed and easy to follow. Amy has options for all types of learners which is great!
Most of your grade in this course is based on one project where you create your own language. Every other week you add to the paper. While some weeks this took me a lot of time, it is not hard. Amy tells you exactly what you need to include and gives you plenty of resources to do so. The class is slightly boring at times, but Amy is great.
Dr. Fountain is great. I did the live online class and it was a breeze. Never really had to worry about the class. There is a discussion post every week which are super easy and sometimes fun. There are also quizzes online which are based off the readings and you get unlimited attempts on them which is a lifesaver. 3-4 papers which arent bad.
Y'all fr complaining about LING150A1. One of the easiest classes I've ever had to take. Everything is laid out for the students, and the directions and expectations are always clear. Love Prof. Fountain - she's super caring and will help students whenever needed.
She was so helpful and polite, she never refused to help if there was any problem. The way she taught was so clear and understandable. I highly recommend to take classes from this professor.
Professor Amy is one of the sweetest professors I had. She was really nice and helpful when it came to the assignments. Although she got off track sometimes, she always got back to the original topic. She is very understanding and accommodating during class time and on class assignments.
I took her course on my freshman year and it was just amazing. Amy is a wonderful person not only as a professor but also as a friend. She is willing to help with her student in-class and out of the class. I went and see her several times after I chose not to do linguistics and she is still supportive. For this class remember to do assignments well
Amy is really caring and truly cares about her students. One assignment a week and a project. Easy class and easy to speak to!
course is revolved around one project which makes it incredibly boring, do not recommend.
This is the most annoying class I have ever taken. Class is based on one project so its a lot of work if you get behind. Material is confusing and is not useful in everyday life. Also so boring. There are so many other easier and more interesting Gen-eds. Don't waste your time. Professor Fountain is great person though.
Amy's lectures were really good! Her discussion leaders are hard graders, and they dock off points for the little things. Amy allows you to get extra credit points near end of the semester.
I like how she sets up the class where you can make it an online course or in person course. Professor Fountain truly cares about the well-being of her students and wants to see us succeed! This class was a little confusing at first, but she is very responsive when you reach out for help. Would recommend to any honors student!
Really great and respectful professor, always willing to help students inside and outside of the classroom. The course was structured so well- I really liked the flex mode of the course, it made it really easy to navigate everything.
Fantastic teacher who is very passionate about her class she is very understanding and very helpful when you don't understand the topic. No midterm, no final only one language project with 5 parts but it's easy since you have the whole semester to do it all. Quizzes are also vey easy multiple attempts and open all semester. Definitely recommended.
Easy gen-ed course with no midterm or final. Quizzes were multiple attempts and open all semester. Amy Fountain is so kind and ill help you with anything!
Such a sweet professor, clear assignments, clear expectations, and she provides an easy to follow timeline. Also very flexible about deadlines and coursework. highly recommend :)
Dr. Amy Fountain is one of the best professors I have ever had. Her lectures are amazing and exciting.
The class revolved around one main project with weekly discussion posts. You received feedback from each step of the project your submitted on time. The lectures were engaging and funny, you really learned a lot from every class. It was an interesting course to take as a gen ed and an easy A as long as you did the assignment.
Dr. Fountain is by far the best professor that I have had so far! She genuinely cares for her students and it shows in her flexible teaching style. She offers class in person, via Zoom, and asynchronously. She is easy to reach and flexible with her deadlines
Highly recommend taking ling150c for gen ed credit, honors obligation also wasn't that much work. Really liked the flex in person model of teaching. Amy is very caring and always willing to answer any questions or help students. Really wants to help. Class is very well organized and fairly straightforward- very interesting too
Professor Fountain is by far my favorite teacher I have had this year. She is very nice, understanding, and even funny. You can tell she cares and knows a lot about linguistics and she made the class very fun and interesting. As long as you complete the assignment and put in effort she rewards you. Her lectures are great and I have learned a lot!!
Some of these reviews are very dramatic and likely written by lazy students. We did one project the whole semester which she does with you in class and is pretty simple to understand if you attend. The feedback from her and the TAs is helpful and although some lectures are boring it is mostly interesting. Her late work policies are very good too!
Do the work and you'll get an A
Passionate about the subjects she teaches, great energy, cares about the students. The classes are fun and interesting. The essays have very specific formatting that is graded seriously, but the instructions are very clear, and the feedback on graded papers is very helpful. The class taught me what I expected to learn, and more.
The hardest part of this class was proper citation formatting because, they use their own style. It is "explained" but still confusing. Amy understands that life happens so, just communicate with her. She's very passionate. This class is nothing but papers and discussion boards, so be ready. Class is definitely interesting, be willing to learn.
Any is a really nice teacher but it made it a little difficult transitioning and teaching linguistics as someone who has never heard of linguistics before this class. In the end, I did enjoy her class as the assignments were not bad and she does projects with you in class. Totally recommend her class!
Beware, it is a semester-long project, but I had gotten over a month behind on the project and still was able to get an A. She really cares about your success.
LOVE THIS WOMAN. Class was easy. Funny videos at the beginning of each class too. Deadlines are so flexible she literally gives you a built-in one-week extension for one out of the two assignments you have to do every week. She's just a homie. Her assignments are fun and if you put in somewhat of an effort, you'll get an A
Super easy grader. Easy A for Sure
Dr. Fountain was approachable and funny! She gave clear expectations and often walked us through exactly what she wanted in the assignments. There was only one major project that was continuously added to and revised throughout semester. Due dates were flexible. You could attend in person, on Zoom, or watch recorded lectures after. Highly recommend
Professor Fountain is engaging and makes the material interesting. The single project is manageable if you stay on top of it. I found Unstuck ai helpful for studying and preparing for class. Would recommend this course.
Took this class for half a semester and it wasn't stressful at all! Very easy material that is genuinely interesting to learn, and the professor is very passionate about it. I highly recommend taking this class as a gen ed.
The final project is done throughout the course of the semester and is graded each week so by the end your final will be an A. The TA for this class was super helpful as well. Attendance honestly did not matter as it didnt really affect the final project. There is a discussion post due each week but they are simple.
Amy was extremely kind and the class was easy. Was able to participate in person, on Zoom, or watch the lecture recordings. She's very passionate about linguistics and made it interesting. Whole class is just working on one project for the whole semester with a few discussion posts mixed in. Overall I loved her.
There are weekly discussion posts, shouldn't take you more than 10min, we work up to the final project the whole semester, make sure you turn eveything in on time, only like 5 assignments can be accepted past the due date.flex class so you don't even need to go to class, there are walk through videos for each step.
I took B, I don't know why? So, don't want to take this professor again
This class is offered hybrid style, I recommend attending the zooms at the beginning of the semester (no need to attend in-person), and then you can just watch the recordings when needed after you start to understand the class format. All semester you work on a paper, feedback is extremely helpful. As long as you don't get behind you will do great!
The requirements for the term project are extremely weird in my opinion, especially the citation format. I discussed with her a few times about her grading rubric, she was nice but did not offer effective solutions. I would not recommend taking her classes.
Very organized, knew exactly what to expect from each session. Professor was very kind and is very clearly passionate about linguistics! Very easy class, would take again.
Amy Fountain is very kind and is knowledgeable about her field. Does not require attendance, but records lectures, which I rarely watched towards the end of the semester. Gives good feedback on papers when you ask for it. Grade discussions and short assignments are not too difficultly.
Dr. Foundation is by far one of the best professors ever! This is my third class with her receiving all A's. Her instructions are very clear and she is always ready to answer your questions. Just make sure you completed the assignments on time and you will be just fine.
Professor Fountain is very lenient with grading and attendance, very understanding, and her teaching style is a lot of fun! Lots of easy points and opportunities to drop assignments you missed (three per discussion post and writing assignment). Very easy class, if you need to take a gen ed, absolutely consider this one!
easy class and attendance isnt mandatory. the whole semester you work on one project and she gives you step by step videos on how to do it. i learned a lot too. if you want an easy gen ed that you can also learn some cool things from, take this class!
Easy class and attendance isn't mandatory since it's a hybrid course. There is a semester long project that you work on during class, multiple steps, easy if you keep up with the work and submit it on time. Her teaching style is fun and you get to learn a lot about languages. Easy class if you need a gen ed.
This class was beyond confusing and hard to felt like I learned anything. Participation isn't required making it hard to show up, leaving me confused and asking frequent questions (she was helpful) or struggling through assignments. Lectures didn't at all correlate to assignments which was confusing. Assignments weren't hard once I figured them out
The class was a bit confusing to understand, but homework was easy and lectures are recorded.
I loved having Amy as a professor, she was very nice and her lectures were pretty easy to understand. The assignments have clear instructions and she posts videos to walk you through each assignment. Attendance is not mandatory as long as you get everything turned in and she was pretty lenient with that as well. If you take this class, have fun!
The whole semester you worked on a project which is very straight forward especially with her step by step videos. It is an easy gen ed as long as you complete the few assignments. Also all of this can really be done without even going to the lectures (which aren't mandatory anyways).
