Gottfried teaches Chem 130 honors. All I can say is that its hell. She gives you "SEA"s which are supposed to be creative projects, but really they are just a waste of your time. This class is very difficult and I would recommend you take regular chem 130 instead of honors for this reason.
Studio chem just sucks. Take regular chem 130, not honors, and spare yourself the horrors. SEAs=waste of time and we're doing a lab on water. seriously now, water? i hate chem 130 more than any other class i'm taking. don't take it! also, the GSIs are fairly dumb. and by fairly i mean extremely.
Chem 130 is tough. But although I am clearly in the minority, I like it a lot. I think it's great that Amy puts all the lessons on her class website. It's great for reviewing before the tests. Some of the projects are a bit weak, as are some of the demonstrations, but overall, I'm satisfied.
Gottfried herself is a fine and adequate teacher- it is the class, and more specifically, the GSIs, that are a travesty. This class is ridiculous and sophomoric beyond belief, and yet, it is still difficult because of the ridiculous grading methods and idiocy of the GSIs. Avoid Studio at any cost.
Dr. Gottfried is very helpful in and out of class. You can tell she cares about the chemistry and the students a lot. The class isn't easy but you shouldn't expect it to be as the "double honors" course. It's a really great learning experience.
This class was the worst class I have taken so far at Michigan. I disagree with any who say that Gottfried is fine, and it's the class that's the proble. Gottfriend made the class, and we were her test subjects, so anything in the class can be attributed to her. Miserable experience.

I was a naive freshman who signed up for this class during summer orientation and wish I never took this class. It is about 2 times harder than regular chem and has much worse grades. SAVE YOURSELF! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
The class is harder than the regular chem 130 and the projects are pretty dumb, but overall Gottfried is a good teacher. She will go out of her way to help a student.
Her projects are pointless. You will learn noting that will could help you in orgo. Freshman avoid this class at all costs. Even postpone taking chem til the next semester. Horrible. Waste of time. Makes you want to hit your head against the wall.
Gottfried is not engaging at all, her lectures are boring, and she has not made chemistry fun at all. Her teaching style was not good for me at all and I felt that she really didn't make an effort to connect to the students and go through the steps of explaining things in detail so people know what was going on.
She is a very poor professor who's teaching abilities are very minimal. Avoid her if at all possible!
Worst teacher I hve ever had. The only good thing about her is that she helped me find out that I can learn organic chemistry all by myself!!!
she's nice..and very enthusiastic..she cares about her student..
She means well, just kind of stupid. At least once every class students have to point out a mistake she's made. Makes you wonder how many mistakes she makes that we don't catch. Just read the book, it's your only friend.
makes at least one mistake every class- it's a guarantee...it's become ridiculous. she's imcompitent and avoid taking Orgo II with her. you have to learn everything on your own because she's no help at all.
doesn't explain well, yet makes her tests hard
She horrible and is very mean.
Very unclear, do not take orgo with her unless you want to work much harder than you have to. She teaches to the chalkboard and does not engage her students.
I didn't take studio chem with her, but I did take the class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She created that monstrosity, which reflects poorly on her.
I hate this beeyotch. Some people are just not meant to be teachers and this lady was at the top of the list. She talks the board and insults her students who are just trying to understand just what the (*&*&! she's talking about. Her tests are super hard so study your butt off, join a study group, and pray to God that the semester end soon.
Tests are actually okay...because I knew a lot of the subject from high school. Projects are ridicoulous..a major drag on the grade. Seriously, I don't think anyone has an A. And did I mention, this 5 credit class takes more time than all my other 12 credits combined.
Although the class was insanely difficult and the exams were really hard, she turned out to be a pretty good professor. She was always willing to answer questions and responded promptly to emails.
Although this is a very time-consuming class, (usually it takes you more than six hours after class to go over the materials) but I promise you that this course is very helpful. You will know what real science is. It is not just reading textbook and doing assignment. The proffesor is always willing to answer any question and full of passion.
She's a good teacher and is willing to help you outside of class if you make an appointment. Unfortunately, you have to teach yourself everything. The coursepack is a waste of time. You spend extreme amounts of time on stupid projects. Don't take this class unless you're asking for a B after giving ++A effort.
I find it hard to pay attention in her lectures, especially when students catch her mistakes on the board. I only went to her lectures to keep track of the material, and then followed up with Copolla's podcasts to clarify her gibberish. Study with others - that's the way to go.
I did not do well in this class.
She is not as bad as every complains about. People make mistakes when they don't copy directly off notes, which would make this class unbearable. She is pregnant and has an outie belly button. If you are taking this class then you probably have to and have no choice, good luck.
I think that most of the people who have commented about her are mainly commenting about the class. Obviously this class sucks, it's a pre-med class and it's not supposed to be easy. If you had Nolta for 211, then you will be somewhat disappointed with Gottfried, but altogether she's not bad. She is definitely not mean and I can follow her notes.
When I first looked her rating up I was scared to take the class. Everyone made her out to be horrible, but after taking the class I realize this is not the case. It's Orgo 2, you can't expect her to hand-feed you but if you take the time to go to her office hours or e-mail her she is very helpful- and nice!
Seems disorganized. She seems to try, but theres a 70% chance that everyday there is something drawn wrong on the board. Going to lecture is better than not though.
Get out, NOW. She's not awful, but she makes lots of mistakes...maybe it was because she was hormonal when I had her (she was pregnant). She does answer questions directly and she assumes that you will know alot of stuff and won't explain something in more detail because "it's all in the textbook." She knows her stuff but can't teach it well. :(
Dr. Gottfried is a wonderful professor! She is extremely helpful; she offers tons of office hours for students to ask questions. She takes a personal interest in her students, and she always ensures that they understand the material. She really helped me understand the concepts of organic chemistry. She made this class very enjoyable for me.
You could do worse. Lectures are best when she's not trying to do "creative" methods, but she is willing to listen to feedback and answer questions. Expect the class to be hard and take good notes.
I think she's a great lecturer, tries to connect with the class, and attempts to come up with creative ways for students to remember reactions. It's not her fault that the material is so hard!
Gottfried was a great professor. She made herself very accessible to students through office hours. She also tried her best to organize the material in creative and helpful ways. It's a tough class with difficult material, but she tried to break it down as much as possible.
Dr. Gottfried was a great teacher! She always took the most important concepts from each section in the textbook and incorporated it into her lectures. Her style of teaching was clear and very helpful. Her exams were moderately hard, but you would do well if you studied properly.
hard to understand
If you think orgo 1 was hard, She makes this class so much harder. Many of the material on the exams came out of nowhere. I attended every lecture and still had a hard time with them. She doesn't like drawing out mechanisms at all, so when there are 30 point questions, you're pretty much lost. Overall, horrible teacher.
Gottfried,,God! She is a Freak!! I can't believe how she comes up with the exam problems.. YES! Organic Chemistry is one of the most challenging courses but she makes it even harder!! Also she makes SO many mistakes (wonder how she got her Ph.D). She is a great person, but not a great instructor.
She is a very nice lady and is very willing to help outside of class, but she is very vague in her lectures and extremely specific on her exams. It is still possible to do well in the class, but not because of her. I strongly suggest reading the book, watching coppola's podcasts and doing the coursepack.
When she talks about the subject matter, she's pretty good with it. However, she tells a lot of useless anecdotes in class. She is completely unable to answer questions, and grading on the exams is completely inconsistent with classwork.
The material she emphasizes in class is rarely stressed on the exams. The grading is often ridiculous, so the averages tend to be low. She often makes mistakes, but usually corrects them eventually. Try to read the book, study with other people, and definately do th coursepack because lecture alone will definately not prepare you for the exams.
This teacher is pretty bad. Lectures are very vague and broad while the exams are too specific. Her lectures don't correlate with the book at all so you basically have to use your vague lecture notes. She makes mistakes more often than most teachers. No discussion section with this class either.
Generally a mess. Seemed to be more concerned with washing the board 5+times during a 50-minute lecture than actually teaching us the material. Notes do NOT correspond to what's on her exam. Be warned. No answers to the coursepack per UM's chem guidelines...that's BS. I'd take this class elsewhere and transfer the credits. Chemistry at UM sucks.
Well here's the thing. She seems like an extremely nice person, and according to some people, helpful in office hours. Well one thing I realized is that, being sweet and being a good lecturer does "NOT" correlate. I go to her lecture and undertstood absolutely nothing. Read the book and try to get a hold of koreeda's lecture notes.
What was Um thinking when they had this woman teach? She is a nice person, no doubt, but definately not up to par with Coppola or Nolta or anyone else for that matter. My pet monkey could have taught this class better.
Nice, and helpful insofar as she will respond to your emails promptly. However, she is a horrible, unclear lecturer and has absolutely no clue how to write exams. Take this with Coppola or Koreeda or...anyone else.
Lectures are rather confusing and hard to follow, and she writes awful tests, but her ridiculous cheeriness makes her hard to hate. You can strongly dislike her and do terribly in her class, but hating her is kind of like punching a kitten in the face... it's just unnecessary.
Let the ratings speak for themselves... Gottfried is a nice person, but I would avoid another lecture with her at all costs.
If you are an independent student, learning outside of class, Gottfried will be ok. But if you are planning on really learning Organic Chemistry, Gottfried is not the professor you want. She often makes mistake during lecture and her exams are terriblely hard. She might be a nice person but she failed as a professor at least for me.
the only reason I passed this class was because I went to Koreeda's office hours for 215 questions (I had him for the 216 lab). she's nice but a horrible teacher. if you can, go to Koreeda for help even if he's not your prof-- he's funny, nice, and an AMAZING teacher and wants you to understand.
I thought she was super nice and not that bad of a teacher once you look past her reputation as a bad professor. She was extremely helpful with my situation as an athlete and showed a great deal of flexibility with my final exam.
Dr. Gottfried is willing to help if students need it, but is not always very clear. I feel that the material would make more sense if presented in a different sequence. Exams were moderately difficult and topics were not really covered in depth. If you've never been exposed to the material, you'll need some help.
Orgo 2 is difficult class no matter who you have, but her exams were just plain excruciating and seemed about 100 times harder than Koreeda's.
Amy Gottfried is one of the worst professors I have ever had. She routinely makes errors during lectures and her exams are incomprehensibly difficult. I ended up withdrawing from the class and taking Orgo 2 with Dr. Coppola, who is a much better professor.
She is willing to help, but is a real tough grader. She will mark you down mercilessly in water project paper/other papers. It wouldn't be a problem if the class was curved, but it is not. Try to avoid, but don't be afraid if you have no other choice.
Prof. Gottfried is a very nice person, but she has this style of teaching that makes you lose focus from her rambling-teenager-talking-to-her-friends manner of speech, along with excessive use of "kinda", "sorta" does this-that in explaining pretty complicated concepts. And she skims over rough concepts a lot. She is always eager to help, though.
Like everyone else whose ever taken her has probably noted she is in general nice... However when it comes to tests she is completely ignorant of the fact that they covers little of the material she teaches. She tests on minute details that have little to do with general organic chem knowledge. When no one (~950 students)gets a 90% somethings wrong
Amy Gottfried is nice, and that is all there is to her. Her exams are incomprehensible and she makes exams that have the lowest averages in chem history. She makes the class extremely hard, and sometimes course pack is not enough. Please reconsider taking it with her. She hurts everyones grades and shows no sympathy, avoid taking this professor.
Don't take Orgo with her. She writes exams that are horribly difficult and exam keys almost never give points for partial credit. She explains things well in lecture, though. But then she puts things on the exams that are WAY harder than anything she teaches you.
she might be helpful outside of class, but her exams are horrible! Although she curved the grades for students who were going to get C and Ds, didn't curve for A and Bs...which is pretty unfair.
She wants to be helpful, but it seems like she likes seeing everyone do badly. I received the worse grade I've ever gotten in a major course in her class. She curves everyone to a B-, so very few people get A's (3 %)
she is pretty nice, but honestly who gives a crap about that when she sucks as a teacher? a class with around 600 students having a 42% average for an exam...enough said.
I honestly don't know how she still has this job
Honestly not that bad. She had a really bad W09 semester, but her Spring09 semester was really good. She's not that bad of a teacher, but her exams can really deviate from the concepts she teaches in lecture
She always answered all of my questions (I had a lot), even when it made her late to appointments. Incredibly helpful, just like Dr. Nolta. Her exams were hard, but every problem put on exams could be done based on what was taught in class; it just requires some critical thinking. The winter exams weren't that hard, either (she posted them onlin
Dr. Gottfried is not as bad of a teacher as everyone says. She is extremely helpful and always responded to my E-mails. However, I would not take my review of her as the norm because she has received a lot of bad reviews in the past and the spring term is not enough to take those away. My experience with her though was a good one.
Nice person. Not the greatest/smartest lecturer.
First time she taught Pchem. Lecture notes make little sense and are poorly organized. HW/Tests reflect lots of material not covered in class and you must use the book. Shes good at responding to emails but not good at explaining much in class. Had her for CHEM 215 too and same problems are still there. She seems smart but is not good at teaching.
her lecture notes were beyond horrible, so basically dont miss class and pay attention when you go. tests were kind of difficult but the final wasnt that bad. shes helpful and responds to emails super quick
This was her first time teaching, and should be her last. And I had her for orgo2. She is disorganized in lecture and cannot explain tough concepts at all. Additionally, her tests cover material she never taught or that was much harder than hw or examples. The final was used to curve the class, but not by enough. Worst professor ever!
Had her for Orgo2, which she was pretty awful at teaching, but for her 1st time teaching PChem, I thought she was fine. She responds to emails quickly and was always willing to meet with me outside of class to clarify difficult concepts--super nice and super helpful! If you study her lecture notes and skim the book, the exams arent bad at all.
I had heard all the rumors, but I found Dr. Gottfried to be very helpful. Attend office hours/open discussion or email if you have trouble..I found her to be very helpful to me when it was 1-on-1. She provides a lot of tools to help you learn the material. Chem isn't one of my strengths, but I managed a B with moderate studying & consistent hw
Absolutely awful professor for Orgo II. Very unclear notes on the board, all over the place. Office hours were helpful and she is a nice lady, but just a bad fit for Orgo II
Dr. Gottfried teaches a difficult chem 230 class, especially in the spring. If you go to lecture, listen, and actually keep up with the class, the workload is completely managable. She offers numerous resources to help you succeed.
Horrible horrible professor. Disorganized notes, not great at explaining things. She would have to refer to a lecture a week before because she had given us the wrong information. She was nice though...but not nice enough to make up for her lack of teaching skills.
Wow, you actually have to go to class, read the book, understand the hw, and use your brain on exams to do well? You guys have got to be kidding me. Dr. Gottfried is SUPER nice and helpful but has the misfortune of teaching a premed-dominated class. Go to the library or something and stop watching House/Greys anatomy. Geez.
Very nice and explained things well enough. Go to office hours if you have questions and she will help you a ton!
Explained the material clearly and completely. Very helpful and genuinely cares about student success. You must attend lectures and put in work to do well, but all the tools are provided for you.
Prof Gottfried's lectures are clear. She's helpful and responds to emails quickly . However, if chemistry is not your strong point, this class will be hard. Practice exams don't look* like actual exams - more like a study guide. Exams will be tough if you don't like chemistry and don't have strong quantitative analysis skills. I'm not pre-med btw.
Gottfried is really helpful and accommodating. If you go to her office hours she takes note and will bump up for final grade. If you put in effort, it is possible to do well even if Chem isn't your strength.
I really like Gottfried. This class is really not that difficult if you're willing to spend a solid three or four days cramming before an exam. Homework is easy and helps you understand the basics. The exams are tricky but if you thoroughly know the lecture concepts you will be fine. Textbook is completely optional.
She's a good professor, but her exams are very difficult. You MUST attend lecture, do homework, study and go to office hours. You will still probably not be able to answer one or two questions on each of the exams, as she's known to throw things in that you haven't seen in the problem bank or practice exams. Show her you're trying, you'll survive.
I honestly don't understand why people hate on Dr. Gottfried so much. As a lecturer for Chem 230 she is very clear and she is VERY willing to help outside of class. Her exams are rather difficult, and make you think critically about the material, but they are manageable. She is a great professor and genuinely cares about her students' success. :)
Very Nice lady and more human than most other pre-med professors. We could be buds in another world. However, her tests are extremely difficult and deviate from the practice tests, course pack, and lectures a ton, which makes the course pretty hard. A's are doable, but u have to be a good test taker and/or lucky.
Dr.Gottfried is one of the best professors I've had in all of my pre-med science classes. She is very clear, organized, and gives you plenty of resources for extra help or practice problems (there's no coursepack). Yes, this class is challenging and the tests are difficult, as are most UM classes. Grade cutoffs are manageable and she curves tests
Gottfried is a great lecturer -- she makes the class really clear and easy to follow. Her exams deviate a lot from the homework and iClicker problems, though, so definitely do the problem bank and practice exams ahead of time.
Dr. Gottfried is one of the nicest profs I've had at michigan. She is also amazing at teaching this course - her lectures are consistently clear and interesting. Even though this is a tough class, she is very helpful and patient if you don't understand something.
The textbook isn't too useful unless you want another reference source. The class is pretty difficult, it's not uncommon to see a problem or 2 on an exam that you don't know the answer to. A's are doable, but it takes a lot of dedication to achieve.
Gottfried is a really good lecturer and a just a generally cool person. The class is very difficult, as the exams look different than the practice problems and practice exams. She is very clear in lecture, and does curve the grades at the end so it's not too bad.
Do you want to feel 100% prepared walking into an exam and walk out like you were taking an exam for the wrong class, that's Gottfried. She's terrible, and when she 'tries to help' she's like oh well didn't you look at my podcast thing... NO! Teach it to us in lecture if you want us to know. Absolutely awful.
Dr. Gottfried is amazing. There are so many resources available to help you succeed in this class. Her lectures are engaging and she is always willing to help. If you post a question on piazza she will respond within a few hours. Her exams are challenging but if you put in the time you can do well in this class. My best pre-med professor.
Lecture, homework and PREP are nothing like the exams. Be prepared for at least a question or two on the exam you dont know how to answer. Lectures arent clear at times, but prof. G is great about meeting up. GO to office hours.
This class sucks. It's SO much work for only 3 credits and is boring. Dr. G seems okay in lecture--very nice lady and seems clear when she teaches. However, exams are absolutely nothing representative of the course or PREP. It doesn't matter how much you study, you're walking out wondering what class you took the exams for....hate this class.
Gottfried is a nice/cool prof, but her exams are pretty tough and her lecture slides are unclear at times. Like other reviews have said, PREP and homework don't really help for her exams. She is really helpful and exams are always curved a little. Also, homework, discussion, and iclickers help out your grade, so in the end, it's not too bad.
This is a difficult pre-med course, especially if you are not majoring in the sciences. However, Dr. Gottfried is wonderful, extremely helpful, and genuinely cares about teaching and her students. Honestly, just ask her for help and you will get it. I improved throughout the semester, did well on my final, and she ended up bumping my grade up!
I don't get why people are so upset with this class and professor. Seriously. The class was remarkably easy if you you remembered anything from Gen chem or AP chem, and even if you didn't, it was taught pretty clearly and effectively during lectures. The exams were also not nearly as bad as people have been saying, they were very fair
I have no idea why people would have anything bad to say about Prof. Gottfried. She is so nice and teaches the material well, I loved her. The class wasn't bad if you did the HW and PREP problems. PREP problems are the way to get through the exams and are very representative of the exams. Overall fair class and not as bad as others are saying.
Gottfried is incredibly helpful, smart, clear, and kind. She goes out of her way to help her students. This isn't even that hard of a class, and if you put the time into it, you'll walk out with an A. Simple as that.
Great lecturer; very helpful in office hours. Exams are challenging but fair.
Not an easy class but not extremely difficult. The exams are pretty challenging, very diff from the hw but do the PREP to prepare. She is really nice and helpful if asked thru Piazza or in person but it's obviously sort of difficult to go to all or most office hours. MUCH better than Orgo I think. She grades in your favor (lots of partial credit)
This class is really hard (worse than Orgo I and II). However, there are tons of resources to do well (recorded lectures, Piazza and PREP problems). Dr. Gottfried is one of the best teachers at the university, with very clear and concise lectures. I would not take this class during spring term. It is a continual onslaught of material.
Dr. Gottfried puts a lot of time into helping the students. Make sure to use Piazza. She answers the questions on there every day and you can pick up a lot of hints from her answers. Also, be sure to work through the entire test prep packet that she gives you beforehand.
Extremely willing to help! Multiple open discussion hours outside of class. Do the prep problems two times before each exam and you should be fine. Exams are much more difficult than in class explanations so doing PREP early and thoroughly is key. A manageable class if you do hw, go to discussion, keep up! Gottfried is a great teacher!!
Dr. Gottfried is amazing! She really tries to help you out, and has a ton of resources too! And she's really fun to talk to outside of class as well :)
Her PREP problems do NOT correlate with exams at all. She also posts past semester's exams and once again don't help you on the actual exam. The homework is completely useless and does not help. The only good thing about this course is discussion. I repeat, her exam questions make no sense and you could study for days and fail it. STAY AWAY
Gottfried is a great lecturer, easily one of the clearest science professors I've had at this school. She's very nice and always approachable. However, she writes exams from hell. This class is brutally difficult.
Gottfried is nice and approachable, but her exams are crazy like everybody else said. They are taken to a whole new level compared with lectures and homework. Not difficult to get a B in, but to get an A you really need to be a chem person. The acid/base stuff is very difficult.
Personally I don't think the material is overwhelmingly difficult, and Dr. Gottfried makes more than enough resources available to ensure even the slowest among us are able to understand any given concept. The problem with this class is the AMOUNT of material. It should be split up into two semesters (like orgo and physics), or be worth 5 credits.
Gottfried is nice and wants students to learn the material. If chem or reasoning isn't your strength then you might struggle quite a bit with the exams. Not hard to get a B, but an A requires a ton of hard work. I felt that trying to learn this much material in a full semester was too much that I would recommend against taking it spring term.
This class is by no means easy, but is manageable. Even if you work through the PREP, you will always see a very difficult question or two on each exam meant to see whose reasoning skills are outstanding. Gottfried is great and makes the material understandable. Pre med wannabes who try to rely on straight memorization may struggle a bit.
To those saying that neither the PREP nor the practice exams prepared them for the real exam, you are correct. However, this is due to the clear and simple fact that this is a class about reasoning, not rote memorization. I barely attended class/did homework: EASY A if you are good at reasoning and logic. Gottfried is clear, but doesn't go in depth
Even if you do all the PREP and all the homework, you may still find the exams to be difficult, as this is not a class about recalling specific examples. You may be given problems where you have never seen anything similar before. This is to see how good your reasoning skills are rather than your ability to "copy steps" from similar problems.
Gottfried is an extremely intelligent and helpful professor - people hate on her because they don't do well on the exams. If you want to do well, attend class/her open discussion. Also - do the prep TWICE and do it properly. Don't look at answers until you've struggled through problems. Do the prep properly twice = A grade no problem.
Dr. Gottfried is probably the most maligned professor. In reality, though, if you keep up & don't miss class, you will do quite well. And go to office hours on the reg; she's very nice & cares about your success. More importantly, she makes it obvious what you definitely must know. When all's said & done, she'll write you a GREAT letter of rec.
Dr. Gottfried is an AMAZING teacher. PChem was such an easy class with her, even in the Spring. I wish I had taken her in a full term because I would have liked more timing on the tests, but aside from that, the class was awesome. Her organization of the curriculum was so much better than the textbook's. Definitely one of the greatest profs around.
Dr. Gottfried is the best professor I have ever had at this university. Her lectures are crystal clear. She also really cares about her students and wants all of them to succeed. She is super helpful in office hours, and she will give you every study resource possible. Even though her exams are difficult, she gives a generous curve.
she's ok
Dr. Gottfried lectures well and is willing to help, but writes some of the hardest chem exams ever. Questions are MUCH harder than what is discussed in class. You can always expect to find a question or two where you may not know how to answer. An A range grade is doable but requires a lot of effort and excellent reasoning skills.
Not the best experience. This class is like gen chem except at least 50x harder. Gottfried writes exam questions where even the smartest student in the class may not be able to answer. She curves each exam a little bit but you will be quite surprised to see some of the statistics. They're obviously still trying to weed out premeds in this class.
I started off the semester pretty rough and went into Gottfried desperate for help moving forward. I was surprised she was willing to meet with me 1 on 1 outside of her open discussion times. She was super helpful and really understanding, and I've done much better as the semester went along. Great professor who keeps Pchem interesting!
Dr. Gottfried is an amazing professor. Yes, the class is difficult! However, she is extremely encouraging and devotes so much time to helping her students. She is definitely one of the better Professors at Michigan.
Really great professor. Leaves no ambiguities, and if she is deciding to cover something, she will COVER it. She goes very in depth, so reviewing lecturesdoing HW is essential, but just look again, its all in there. Tests are very tricky, but she is sympathetic and there to help
Dr. Gottfried definitely broke down complicated chemistry concepts into understandable portions. PCHEM wasn't a breeze, but I learned a lot from her thanks to her engaging and helpful teaching style. Her tests are usually much harder than the prep material, but in the end, it helps you learn and absorb the material learned in class.
I am very conflicted about this class. Professor Gottfried would teach clearly in class and did a good job. Then she would give these exams that are extremely difficult and unclear.
Dr. Gottfried was honestly one of the best lecturers I've ever had. She breaks down the material so well, and is helpful with Piazza questions too, so not understanding material the first time around is definitely no cause for concern. Exams are challenging but an A is definitely doable if you put in the effort and understand not memorize material
It's too bad that she has the monopoly over chem 230. I wish somebody else taught with her to keep her in check. Otherwise the exams she wrote were way too difficult. She curves the exams, but she clearly tries to make them too difficult rather than too easy so that she can achieve a certain score distribution in the end. She is okay in lecture.
Her exams are challenging, but very fair. They really do test your understanding of what is taught in class. If you do all the prep (and you should definitely do all the prep) and go to her with any concepts you do not understand completely (which I recommend cause she teaches college concepts like it's 6th grade science), you will do well.
Toughest exams you will encounter at this university. She will give you 40 pages of practice problems before exams, every page with unique problems. Exams will give you problems you will never have seen before, and it will be a test of your reasoning skills. If you are more of a memorizer than logical reasoner, prepare for a bad time.
Of all my classes, had the most thorough materials. She provides everything you need to get an A and then some. Although it requires work and time, it is very clear what you must do to get an A.
She is very good at teaching, though she makes the test materials much harder than the lecture material (borderline unfair). She answers questions by getting you to think & not give it away, which is annoying. This is much harder than Orgo because her tests are just unnecessary. Lecturesdis are non-mandatory but can help your grade
Dr. Gottfried was awesome for this class. You can tell that she really cares about her students and wants to see them do well. The material is tough but shes willing to help and answer questions. She was always energetic and happy and for an 8 am class this was super important. Best tip for this class is to go to office hours and ask questions!!!
You will not pass this course if you simply try to memorize the PREP questions. You must utilize all of the resources available to you (ie: open discussion, piazza). If you put in the work, Dr. Gottfried WILL reciprocate. She is a brilliant, engaging lecturer who will challenge you to become a better student. Get ready to WORK for your grade.
Gottfried is nice in lecture, but her exams are horrid. Be prepared to have to work extremely hard. A B grade is doable, but you have to work exponentially harder to get an A grade. She wants a certain grade distribution because, like it or not, med schools require that their prospective applicants be ranked in relevant courses.
This is REALLY HARD for a 3 credit class. I probably would have done better if I had not taken 17 credits of all hard science classes. Exams are terribly difficult. This is still a weeder class despite everybody getting through orgo. Too bad Gottfried has the monopoly over this class so nobody can tell her if her exams are unreasonable.
It is very true that Gottfried's tests tend to be a surprise for many students. They are very difficult and require a lot of thinking. However, she is helpful if you ask for help. Teaching a class dominated by grade obsessed premeds is hard. If you put in the expected effort you shouldn't fail to get at least a B. Take advantage of the gimme points
Lectures cover basics, it's up to you to practice and learn it. Do the PREP and you'll easily get A's on exams. Dr. Gottfried makes herself available for questions and office hours better than I've seen any other professor. great class, not as hard as they say, you get what you put in
The only reason why anyone would rate Dr. Gottfried low is cause of hard exams. She's a really good lecturer and of course while exams are obviously a lot tougher than what one would expect, they definitely make me feel more prepared for the MCAT. Tough class but that's what you get for being pre-med
Gottfried is an amazing lecturer. This class had tough exams, but was very good. If you put in consistent effort, you can't do that poorly in this class. Gottfried is extremely helpful during class and in office hours, and is super willing to help make sure you understand everything.
Gottfried isn't a bad lecturer, but her exams are overly difficult. The material itself is not presented poorly, but I think people struggle with this class due to there being too much material crammed into a 3 credit class. This class should either be broken up into two semesters, or made into a 4 if not 5 credit class.
The hardest class that I have taken at the university. With that being said, it is also the most rewarding premed class that I have taken thus far. She has many office hours, so go to them whenever you can. Always is willing to meet with you outside of class if things are unclear. DO THE PREP PACKET TWICE IF NEED BE!
Chem 230 is definitely a challenging course, but you will be so grateful that you took it with Professor Gottfried. She forces you to become an excellent critical thinker in addition to chemistry student.
Dr. Gottfried gives clear and concise lectures. It is clear that she cares about her students and their level of success in and out of her class. She is accessible through piazza. If you don't skip class and take your time to study for at least a week before the exams, the class is very manageable.
Gottfried is the only 230 professor. She taught well but the class was way too hard, and it is her choice to make it that way. The class material was a lot easier than test material. I struggled hard in this class and went to her office hours and it didn't seem to faze her. Studied 24/7. Relied heavily on my GSI. My advice is to take 260 instead.
not a good advisor and not a good professor.
Chem 230 is a tough class but Dr. Gottfried makes it enjoyable and provides lots of resources to aid you throughout the semester. Piazza was very interactive and she would provide immediate feedback (within 24 hours). She also scheduled lots of office hours. As long as you start the PREP 7 days+ prior to the exam, it's very doable.
Gottfried is a very engaging professor. She is willing to help students as she offers a large number of office hours. The class is quite difficult; however, if you go to class and spend enough time, it is definitely doable. Honestly, she is one of my favorite professors at this university.
please i just want to pass p chem :/ her exams are hard but she gives you all the resources. i get stressed during the exams and cried during two of them because they were so hard but she's nice
Dr. Gottfried is probably one of the best and worst professors I've had. When you first meet her you love her and after the first exam you hate her. She teaches the material well and provides ample practice for her exams, however what is in her PREP does not guarantee it will be on her exam. To do well: Go to class, finish PREP, and reread notes.
As others have noted, this is a very difficult class, and for me is the hardest I've taken in undergrad. That said, the exams are still fair. Still, she's an excellent lecturer, is super friendly and will go out her way to help students. Start the PREP ideally 7-14 days in advance, complete it twice and try to time yourself. Learn to problem solve
Great professor, really cares about chemistry and her students. She makes it clear what you have to do to succeed. She writes some tough exam questions, but gives you plenty of practice to prepare. Surprised she doesn't have a higher ranking.
Dr. Gottfried teaches you how to mature in your thinking. Every PChem topic has some key concepts, all of which are relatively easy to learn by doing practice problems, but the exams require you to solve problems of unprecedented difficulty to apply those concepts. She wants you to do well, and you can. Take a deep breath & ask for help if need be
One of my favorite professors at Michigan. She teaches clearly and makes lecture engaging. She provides tons of opportunities to ask questions in person and online, and always makes a point to be thorough, as well as make sure all students have the opportunity to ask their questions. Dr. G's class took heavy commitment but was extremely rewarding.
Gottfried is the only thing that made PChem bearable. She's one of the most committed professors on campus and wants to help her students. Her exams are extremely difficult, but she holds so many office hours to help us understand the material. This would probably be my least favorite course if any other professor taught it.
While Gottfried appears to be nice superficially, her exams are simply too difficult, and the class is even worse than orgo in that she teaches you extremely easy barebones stuff, and you literally teach yourself essentially everything else. There is really no point in paying for this course when I have legitimately taught myself all the material.
She's a stellar professor, and although it's true that the exams will likely push you beyond your limits, you can do well in the class. You get one exam's worth of points for midterm improvement, homework, and discussion as a buffer. Also, PREP is divided into sections by topic, so start the problems as soon as something is discussed in lecture.
Dr. Gottfried is an incredible professor. Although this is debatably the hardest pre-med class at the University of Michigan, she explains everything in a way that makes sense. She seems to genuinely want her students to succeed. That being said, her exams are extremely difficult, but she does curve them. Would not take Pchem with any other prof.
Gottfried is approachable and makes sure you understand the material. There's lots of office hours and if you post on Piazza she responds very quickly. However, her lectures/homework are NOT representative of exams AT ALL. Be prepared to rage while doing the PREP and rage again at the exams because they are wayyyyy harder than any lecture material.
Gottfried's exams are extremely difficult. The material she teaches in lecture gives you the base for what you need to know, then through a lot of PREP practice and self-study you start to learn what she'll ask on exams. She does want everyone to succeed, and she gives a lot of her time for that. Use Piazza and office hours as much as you can!
Yes, the class is time consuming and difficult, but Dr. Gottfried gives amazingly clear lectures. I would 10/10 take a class with her again!
This course is difficult but there is no other instructor that I would have taken this class with except Dr. Gottfried. She is super approachable and really dedicated to helping you do well. She explains the material well but of course wants to challenge you to succeed so don't expect an easy A. Be prepared to work hard and don't give up.
She's alright. Super nice and approachable, but this is honestly one of the hardest classes I've taken here. PREP is the only way to actually prepare for exams. I understand it's difficult to explain such complex concepts, but lectures often felt a bit barebones. You'll learn a lot, just be prepared to work
The lectures cover at most 10% of the material on the exams, so most of exam preparation has to be done on your own. Homework is useless because it is not even 5% as difficult as the exam. By the way there are 7 exams for this one class! She explains material well after class but the exams always have new material that very few know how to solve.
This class is the worst class I've ever endured. There are 7 extremely difficult exams, with the final being cumulative. Gottfried is a good lecturer, but her lecture material is extremely basic compared to her exams and she choses for it to be this way. The stress level created for this class is too much to handle for any student due to the exams.
Lectures are elementary compared to her rigorous exams. I recommend NOT taking this with any other difficult courses. Despite providing a ton of great resources for practice and feedback, a large sum of time is dedicated to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but clicker points can be used for those who don't want their grade to be 100% exam-based.
She's very approachable and her lectures are clear. Since there isn't really a textbook for this class, you have to make an effort to attend the lectures. The exams are pretty hard but she gives you a lot of resources (practice tests, etc.) to study from.
She is one of the best lecturers I've had at this school. Her exams are pretty tough but she gives "improvement" extra credit points, you only need 75% on iClicker, and the class is a curved scale. She records OH and answers literally every single Piazza post. She really wants students to do well. MUST DO PREP SHE POSTS (w/ the key) TO DO WELL.
PChem is a difficult class no doubt. But Dr. Gottfried is always very willing to answer questions, whether in office hours or on Piazza. Her tests are difficult, her coursepack is challenging, but I've learned so much from this experience. You will be trained to work really hard in this class and will be pushed to your limit but you will grow!
Dr. Gottfried is a great lecturer and she puts more time into helping students learn chemistry concepts than any other professor I've had. Lots of people are put off immediately by her exams but that's because they test your reading skills and ability to pull information out just as much as your chemistry knowledge but that's what the PREP is for.
This is the most challenging class I have taken at Michigan. With that said, the work is incredibly rewarding and you will learn chemistry on a deep level. During the class you will be very frustrated at times, but when it is over there is a definite sense of pride and accomplishment for persevering. Make sure to do the PREP!
Dr. Gottfried acknowledges that we all came into PChem expecting the worst, so she works very hard to help us succeed. I really enjoyed the TBL style just because it was more points if you had a bad test (which we did!) but she gives you an option to have it be 100% exam based if you don't want to go to class. GSIs were amazing! Go to office hours!
Honestly pchem totally sucks and it is really hard, but Dr. Gottfried does a great job teaching the material and making you actively learn/practice. The TBL style class can be a lot of work and is a nightmare if you get behind, but I honestly felt like I learned a lot: Great clear videos to watch then having her to help w problems during lecture.
Every review about Dr. Gottfried here is accurate. Her exams are brutal and really test your ability to apply the hardest concepts to new scenarios. Her pre-TBL videos are very clearly taught, and her lecturing style is concise and truly beneficial. She is by far the best STEM professor I've had because she shows a genuine interest in her students.
CHEM230, aside from very basic problem solving on easy concepts, is pretty much a big trivia game. She tests on few practical concepts, choosing to instead make students remember a bunch of random pieces of trivia that would be looked up in any sane working environment. Logic questions are simple while most questions require worthless memorization
This class is made unnecessarily hard. All of the lecture material is info from AP chem and chem130 but the tests have concepts that are much harder. Basically had to pay full tuition for an online class that I had to teach to myself. I would think that a class that tested on hard material would actually teach that material instead of the basics.
I took this class and got an A. No thanks to gottfried though. I stopped watching the lectures after the first week when I realized she wasnt gonna teach anything beyond the most basic concepts. She leaves any and all difficult content to be learned alone. So I started reading her slides briefly before the exams and then doing the rest alone.
On top of attending class to do mandatory TOPS (team based learning) we also have to spend a lot of time out of class watching lectures on our own, doing quizzes, and hw. I spend way too much time on this class for just 3 credits. Tests are really hard too, with lectures not being helpful.
She's clear in explaining material and the course is really organized. She also gives plenty of practice problems in PREPP. These things are good. But this class is just an absurd amount of work for 3 credits. 5 tests + TOPS + PREPP + (optional) discussion + practice exams + modules + module homework is way too much, especially for online
Hardest premed class so far (haven't taken biochem yet tho). You basically have to sell your soul to the chemistry gods for the entire semester to get an A/A+ (but It is doable). IMMENSE amount of work for only 3 credits. She gives "improvement points" which is a massive boost. Tests are BRUTAL not just cuz of difficulty but EXTREME time pressure.
Dr. Gottfried taught the material very clearly and you could tell she genuinely cared for her students even through the Zoom platform we used. A very well organized class. Not always the easiest, but Dr. Gottfried was always helpful.
Okay, this class is INSANELY HARD. There is a TON of homework and the exams are brutal. However, Gottfried is really great. She explains things clearly and genuinely cares about her students. She is just such a mom, she's so sweet and she definitely knows what she's talking about. In office hours, she is willing to go over anything multiple times.
Dr. Gottfried is such a nice person and amazing at explaining problems and concepts so that they really "click". HOWEVER, for a 3 credit course the amount of homework, quizzes, pre-lecture videos and lecture team work, ON TOP of FIVE exams, was insane. I'm taking this class Pass/Fail since it's so hard to keep up with all the work.
Gottfried is really nice and has a great personality, and she never makes you feel dumb. But this was by far the WORST class I have ever taken -- just extremely hard. I had to put in so much time to get an A and never felt more relieved to finish a class. Would take a class with her again, but these topics are just so hard.
Dr. Gottfried was an amazing prof! In a shortened semester, she explained things so well and was always available in OH or through Piazza to answer any questions you may have. Completely disagree with the people that say she only teaches basic conceptsall her exams are very doable; it just depends on if you are willing to put in the work.
Dr. Gottfried was the best lecturer for CHEM130. I found her to be the most clear and concise out of all the professors. She was also really helpful when I attended her office hours. The class is challenging, but having a good lecturer like her makes a difference.
She is an amazing professor that explains hard topics so clearly and makes PCHEM not as hard. Her class is organized so well and it forces you to actually learn the material by giving so many practice problems and in class problem solving. One of the best professors at Michigan
She lacks empathy and sent out the most tasteless email calling it "bravery" to attend class during an active school shooter threat while the suspect isn't even in custody. She also counts attendance. During covid. She doesn't care about you at all, take someone else.
Gottfried honestly was the better of the CHEM130 professor team. She does have a lot of care and compassion for her students and really wants to make a personal connection. The overall coursework is just far too expecting of the students. Most of us have not taken chemistry in several years and there is no room for error in this course.
Professor Gottfried was the best Chem 130 lecturer for the FA2021 semester. She explained concepts very clearly and was very easy to understand in her lectures.
She is a great Professor who cares for every student and she explains the material in a great way so that students understand it. Of course, to get the grade you want, you have to practice constantly, but you would have a lot of feedback and resources !!!!!
Gottfried gives you everything you need to succeed - tons of PREP problems, office hours, clear module videos, relevant quizzes... etc. I ended up liking the flipped classroom setup!Expectations were clear and realistic. She solves problems really thoroughly and doesn't skip steps. She's also really sweet in general!
Absolutely ridiculous amount of work for a 3 credit class. 4 term exams and a cumulative final. 3 weekly quizzes and 3 homework assignments a week. I feel like i was scammed out of tuition money and hours. This class needs a serious rework. Dr. Gottfried is very caring but the class is abysmal.
I took Chem 130 asynchronously in Fall 2021 but Dr. Gottfried was the best lecturer by far and was great at answering questions so I always went to her office hours. She was very kind and genuinely interested in helping you understand concepts.
Dr. Gottfried is a great professor and her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. She is always willing to help students and answer any questions. The class does require a lot of work and some serious dedication to it, but all of the problems given help you understand or clarify the content. Would recommend taking with lighter classes.
I had Dr. Gottfried for chem 230 -- the class was difficult, lecture heavy and she made the work worth it. I was always engaged in her class and she's incredibly nice to her students. It's one of those classes where you get out whatever you put in. Best professor at Umich imo
By far the best science/pre-med professor I've had at this university. While it's certainly difficult material, she explains it in the best/clearest way possible in the simplest terms. Practice problems adequately prepare you for the exams, all of which I found to be very fair and without any curveballs. Easy to tell she wants students to succeed.
Dr. Gottfried is an absolutely phenomenal professor. By far the best professor I have had here at the University of Mich. Not only is Dr. Gottfried so incredibly kind and patient, it is also very clear she knows the material she is teaching inside and out
I LOVE Dr. Gottfried!! Best professor ever at Michigan. She loves teaching and her class is fantastic. Chem 230 is hard but Dr. Gottfried made a so much better! She has a lot of office hours. 5 exams are a bit too much but she is great!! 10/10 recommend.
while she's a nice teacher, this class is WAY too much work for 3 credits. 5 tests, lectures we have to watch on our own time, homework due basically every other day, quizzes before class... and during "lecture" time it's just students problem solving while she rushes through solutions in the last 5 mins. the best prof for 230, but 230 is awful.
Her active learning sessions are SO helpful! By far my favorite professor at Umich.
i had her for chem 125/126 (lab) and her lectures are absolutely useless!! yet she expects you to go to them. they do not help with the lab at all and this class is heavily GSI dependent. avoid if possible
Look: this class is difficult and requires a lot of work/effort. But, I think Dr. Gottfried did a pretty good job and was very accessible during office hours and Piazza. Some of the videos did not go in-depth a I would have hoped, but the TIPS sessions were pretty useful. Also, probably the kindest professor on campus!
What a doll! Her class was HARD, but I learned so much. I'm so glad to have taken her class!
Hard course but great professor. Easiest chemistry professor to understand and ask questions to
Professor Gottfried is so kind and so caring. She makes an effort to get to know you during lab times even though lecture sections are extremely large classes. She is skilled at relaying information and answering questions and makes topics clear and resources accesible.
I found Gottfried to be respectful and caring towards students, though her lectures often felt unimportant.
Chem 230 is hard, but Professor Gottfried made it doable. She is by far the best professor I've had at explaining difficult concepts, super patient, and accessible outside of lecture. She cares about students and makes an effort to get to know people, even though the class is quite large. The workload is insane, but she provides plenty of resources
If you are not good at math you are going to have a hard time in this class. She expects you to already know how to do calculus and does not show sympathy on exams. Theres no way you can even guess on her exams because most of it is calculations and application. She is very dismissive and I would highly recommend taking it somewhere else.
Professor Gottfried is an amazing teacher who makes a tough class doable. Her lectures are clear, and she's super accessible. unstuck study was a huge help for study prep.
Professor Gottfried is the best chemistry professor I have had at umich. The reverse classroom is so helpful and she is very approachable and clearly explains topics and answers questions. The exams are fair and she adds points for improvement to your overall grade. She is very encouraging and makes a difficult class less scary. Love her :)
Dr. Gottfried is the sweetest professor ever. She puts in a TON of effort (6-8 hours of OH a week) and somewhat curves your grade to make it look better. Her lectures are very clear and concise and her explanations are amazing. However, her exams are difficult and her responses on piazza are pretty vague. Ask her questions in person instead.
She is the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. She rarely responded to emails on time and would act like her class was the only one that you were taking. For instance, I had another exam in a different class and she accused me of lying about it then made me reschedule it just so I wouldn't be 10 minutes late to her class.
Amy Gottfried showed very little care or respect for me. She failed to answer emails consistently. Her lectures were mildly interesting however she does not care about her students one bit. At one point, she blamed me for a mistake that she made in her class (forgetting to open a quiz on labflow until during spring break, I got a 0/15). Beware.
CHEM125/126 Her lectures spent the majority of the time exploring broader concepts to the lab, which felt like we didn't even talk about relevant lab info until halfway thru the lecture (so with 20 minutes left.) She also showed important tables needed for the lab for a few seconds before moving on without enough time for us to take note
Chem 125/126 was not a horrible lab. Pre-lab was a lot of busy work but it was not difficult. Labs were kind of boring but 100% doable. The lecturers were helpful for data tables, but the slides were posted, so I stopped going and just used those. The pre-lab protocol was enough information to do the lab well.
CHEM 125/126. Some labs were fun, some were very tedious. She would show up in labs sometimes to answer questions. She can get side tracked in lecture, but slides are posted online so it's not necessary to go. Your GSI is more important for your grade and experience than Dr.Gottfried is, honestly.
Chem 125/126 was overall a interesting course, however Gottfried just made some of the labs tedious with the busy work. However, there was little to no work outside of class beside pre-lab quizzes due before each lab. Labs are also very GSI dependent, my sections GSI was little to no help.
She got stuck herself dealing with a calculation in class. That's truly awful.
I think Professor Gottfried was really nice and was engaging in her lectures for lab. She gives away a lot of information and helpful things for lab during lecture so it's important to write it all down because it makes everything much faster during lab. Your GSI matters and Caroline is the best!!!
Dr Gottfried's lectures were extremely useful for the lab as she provided examples for the majority of calculations. However, sometimes her pace was too slow in lecture and, as a result, not all the material got covered. Strictly speaking content, she did a good job explaining labs
Good teacher for Gen Chem lab, explanations for chem topics were great. Her office hours are also nice to go to if you have questions. I wish the lecture pacing was better and the contents more organized to make the pre-lab less tedious.
I enjoyed having Dr. Gottfried! You could tell that she cared about her students & she genuinely enjoyed teaching. However, we would have to rush through lectures because there was a lot of material being presented. If you aren't paying attention, lab may be hard. Attendance is taken w/ iClicker. Your GSI is important, and I loved my GSI, Sean!
Given the nature of Chem230, it is a tough class to begin with. I truly thought that Dr. Gottfried was a great professor, and made an effort to have office hours multiple times a week. The way the class is graded/curved helped a lot of students, but get ready to put in some hours. Personally, I think that this class was easier than Orgo; goodluck!
loved loved her lectures, i think she's really passionate about chem. my gsi however...
Not a nice person overall! Office hours with her is pretty good, she explains things well, but is not understanding at all whatsoever. You could tell her that your grandma just died and she would give you a zero and say that she won't change it until you bring her the corpse as evidence. Also does not provide feedback or even a dang rubric
The class is very easy. SHE is very difficult. I don't think she likes her students. I pray for her.
Very easy lab, going to lab and the lecture wasn't always fun. But it's an easy A and Dr. Gottfried is very nice and personable.
