Best teacher ever! He is a great teacher, hard grader! Must do work or else you will fall behind in class. Summer course went really fast, but if you "use and abuse" his office hours, that would help with your homework and understanding of what you are learning about. Had quizzes and tests. MUST STUDY!
sorry. i used "he" instead of "she". =/ SHE IS AMAZING!
STAY AWAY iff possible. She doesnt know what shes doing. too fresh of a teacher and she will belittle you and wont help you at all. she singles out student she doesnt like and shuts you down. gets pissed at you for not comming to office hours while you were one of the students standing there trying to get her to actually care about answering your q
had her for 180L, doesn't really know what she's doing. so you have to watch out for yourself. Not very helpful when it comes to lab. she'll try to help you but again she's doesn't know much about 180L so be careful
She is excellent! Best lab teacher ever. Chem 180 Lab is HARD, much harder than 130. If you have good technique, you will do fine. Not sure about the office hours comment below since lab instructors don't even have office hours!
Great teacher!!! I learned more from her in lab than I did from the lecture prof. Really nice and really helpful.
She is a great teacher, had her for lecture...always helpful in aiding with experiments....only a few more months Dr Hellman till you're due, Congrats (if you read this).
Had her for one of Dr. Laux's lab sections. Great teacher. She really knows the labs and is very helpful if you ask. Very picky on technique and calculations, like Dr. Laux (also a great professor!- take his lecture if you can!). Work hard and keep up in lab and you will do fine.
Dr Hellmen is very nice and helpful. She wants you to get a good grade and it shows. She is an exceptional smart woman. She is very hands on. I highly recommend taking her.
chem 180 was alot harder than chem 130 for sure, but dr.hellman made sure that her students knew what they were doing. she was very helpful and extremely nice. one of my favorite teachers at occ. really hoping i have her again. extremely funny too.
she's easier than laux in labs. if you want stress, then take laux for lab. howver, hellman uses the same grading scale as laux so you still have to put into a decent amount of effort to be able to finish the labs. in general lab is self paced and self taught and majority of points are lost from the titration unknown and gas constant.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! All the things we did in the lab helped me prepare for lab in Chem 185. I sometimes go back and visit her; she's that friendly and cool to talk too :)
Great lab professor for 110, she needs to be teaching the lecture course instead of Lab... Frechen is just a horrible lecturer professor... I do feel that she grades a bit stricter than Frechen though. Overall Lab can sometimes take longer than the 3 hr 10 mins & she allows you to stay a bit over if you need to finish up.
She makes u do everything again n again. Hard in grading. Must show alk work. Didnt explain much. U are always "behind". 3 hours lab, I always feel lost n stressful. Her face looks so serious
idk why people say she is better at explaining things. I thought Frechen was a great prof for lecture. She is usually on her phone texting and grades harder. Lab does usually take up the 3 hours. This class stressed me out. I'm glad lecture was more b/c that's what made me keep my A. Overall, she's an ok prof. Ask her all the ?s u need answers to
Great Lab professor. Makes you work hard and very picky but the lab and problem solving techniques I learned from her and Dr Laux in Chem 180 are already helping tons in chem 185 lab! She's very hands on with students and cares about you getting a good grade
she make me do it over and over again!Overall she really nice! But she want me to do everything by myself! I hate lab ! I can't do everything by my self
Professor Hellman is very nice, although she can't always quite explain what's going on in lab or why we're supposed to do an experiment a certain way - she is very kind and kind of dorky.
Prof Hellman provides her students everything they need before the lab starts. The labs can be boring especially at the beginning of the semester, but gets more interesting with the organic chemistry lab :). Overall, Prof Hellman is a great instructor to have for lab. warning though, do not copy your lab mates work that will piss her off :)
I thought I hated chemistry before this class and was avoiding it! Dr. Hellman is a cool teacher and makes the subjects interesting and funny too. She explains things so you can understand and posts quiz and exam outlines so you know what to study. Uses online homework that I didn't like at first but the tutorials and videos are helpful.
Dr. Hellman is a great teacher. She made chemistry fun and interesting. I am not a science major but I really got into this class. Easy A if you don't miss class. Attend all lectures and pay attention so you don't have to read the book. Going to lectures is easier than reading the boring book anyways.
Great class to prepare for the rest of the Chem series. Prof Hellman gives interesting lectures and posts the notes online. She answered every HW question I had. Quizzes every 2 weeks, Online homework is helpful and she gives practice quizzes & outlines to study. Easy to get a good grade in this class if you go to lecture and pay attention.
Dr. Hellman is an awesome professor that should be teaching way more Chem courses at OCC. I was lucky enough to have her for 130 and 180L. She is extremely smart and very nice. I've asked a ton of dumb questions and she was always capable of breaking things down and finding solutions that I could understand. I'm going to miss not having her for 185
Dr. Hellman is one of the best professors I've had at OCC! Chem was so hard in high school but Dr. Hellman made it easy to understand and interesting. She cares about her students and does example problems in class. Do the practice problem sets before exams, go to lecture, ask questions, and you will get an A. Offers extra credit, uses online hw.
Awesome teacher! So helpful and clear with what she wants from her students. You can tell she really cares about her class and is super passionate about chemistry. If you don't understand something all you have to do is ask. She works really hard to make sure your prepared for tests and makes lectures enjoyable!
After I got a admission UC , I just took this class to get an credit. Test is really straight. If you take practice exam on website, you will get an A on test. Lecture is amazing and super easy. There are many hw but just spent 2 hours of a week. Professor Hellen is amazing teacher lol
This is not an easy A class. I tried really hard to get an A on this class. However, the professor is very nice and helpful. She promptly responses to your questions.
provides very easy and clear power point notes lectures!!
Professor Hellman is a great professor. She looks more like a model than a chemistry professor. Her class is one of my favorite elective classes at OCC. Definitely recommend to take her!!!
The best teacher at OCC! Easy to pass, makes the class fun, and is an easy passing grade!
She's clear on what she expects of you. I recommend you to rarely miss class because you get points deducted. Quizzes are every other Thursday they are simple to pass if you study the study guide! Tests are fair and are based on your homework and quizzes. Study guide provided. Homework online and due every week ! Stay on track and you'll be fined
the best. She is very helpful and clearly cares about your learning
Best chemistry teacher ever! Would recommend her to anyone. She makes chem understandable and enjoyable at the same time. She cares deeply about her students. Wish I could take her for every class
Amazing prof. Really enjoyed her class and will definitely make an effort to take her other classes. The lectures are straightforward and the lecture notes are exactly what is on the exams. Show up, print and study the lecture notes and there's no reason you shouldn't pass. Never used the textbook.
The class goes really fast, but with homework and exam guidelines you will be ready for exams.
GIVES GOOD FEEDBACK - always replies to emails SKIP CLASS? YOU AIN'T PASSING FRIEND (sleeping in lecture too won't help either) SOOOO MUCH HMWK - 10% final grade CARING - passionate about chemistry and gets you excited about topics too HILARIOUS - very nerdy and charismatic LECTURE HEAVY - AGAIN DON'T SKIP LECTURE AND DO THE HMWK! You'll be ok :)
The best! Easy A, seriously. She's amazing and always avalible for help. There is a lot of notes, probably 6-8 pages of notes per class, but highly recommend. She gives good analogies when it comes to conceptual things.
Best teacher ever! Hands down. First of all she is beyond easy to look at(; so class is enjoyable. Homework heavy but easy homework. Have a week to do it. Quizzes and test are easy if you study her study guide. She is absolutely phenomenal. TAKE HER!!! Lab is easy and fun and classes are long but she makes them interesting. And shes fuego. (;
This was one of the most challenging classes Ive ever taken, but Hellman gives you all the tools to succeed. Go to lecture and take notes. Do the worksheets and study guides and an A is possible. She made it interesting and fun. Sharma was great for lab.
Prof Hellman is a great professor, she really cares about the success of her students. Although lectures are long, she tries her best them to make them interesting and relatable. If you do all the homework (it's a lot) and ask her questions during office hours or email and you will succeed.
Hellman is AMAZING. Best professor I've had at OCC. She genuinely cares about her students. Do all the homework (quizzes are similar to the homework), study the study guides, go to lab, do the worksheets, go to class, and you'll definitely pass. She makes Chemistry fun. Got a low C in high school but got a high A in her class. Thank you, Hellman!
Almost no memorization req. Hellman responds to emails quickly. 3 exams total, 4 quizzes (not pop quizzes) bout 2-3 hours online HW a week. Book optional. DON'T miss labs but u can skip lectures. (but I don't rec. it). Final NOT cumulative. Multiple choice 4 HW & Exams/Quizzes. Most exam content u need to study is on study guide & prev. quizzes.
Homework load is heavy but if you practice the homework problems and the worksheets, you will get A's on the quizzes/tests. The final was difficult and I bombed it, but thankfully I racked up enough points throughout the semester to still have an A in the class. Final isn't cumulative, lowest quiz/lab/homework scores dropped, & lots of extra credit
Best professor I've ever met! Her lectures are straightforward and all you need to do is online HW assignments and studying them for quizzes and tests. No textbook needed! Total 3 exams and 5-6 quizzes + 1 writing assignment. Just put some effort and you will pass with A :)
interesting and fun class. long lectures and lots of homework but tests are straightforward from the study guide and lecture notes. she is super nice and answered all my questions during lab and office hours.
ONLY A 10 MINUTE BREAK IN A 3 HOUR CLASS NOT FAIR!!!! LOTS OF HOMEWORK one paper not that bad NOT HELPFUL talks so FAST ask her questions and end up more confused
hellman was an understanding & caring prof. although lectures were 2 hr long, she kept it interesting. weekly hw, but not bad if u use notes. exams were a breeze imo if you paid attention in class. i had her for lab and shes very informative n helpful. u can tell shes v passionate abt chemisty. highly recommend her for any chem class.
Professor Hellman does a great job at making chemistry fun! Her lectures are straight forward and she has a very clear grading criteria! Good amount of homework each week but its all online. She also offers tons of opportunities for extra credit! I would highly recommend!
Professor Hellman is really passionate and knowledgable about chemistry. She was always available during office hours and quick to respond to emails. I took an evening class and she was still somehow energetic and upbeat during every lecture (her class is super lecture heavy, so skipping class is not a great idea). Highly recommend for chem!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! She gives plenty of extra credits opportunity throughout the semester. Some include doing extra modules, recycling, meal assignment etc. Has 4 exams and provides study guide/practice ws for every exam/quizzes to help you. Attend her office hours! Test is straightforward/attend all her lectures for extra credit at the end!
Coming from no chem experience what so ever, this was the hardest class I have ever taken. She has office hours, which can be helpful. Sometimes she can be a tad bit intimidating, almost makes you feel bad for not knowing the answer or how to solve the problem. I recommend going to tutoring. Lectures are long and tedious. Generous w/ extra credit.
I wouldve liked her if she wasnt so mean when it comes to not knowing the answer. We are coming her for help but I hate how she makes such disrespect comments. Not only that, but having a lab and lecture back to back with only 10 minutes, Goodluck youre going to be starving.
great profs . Lots of home work ,but most of the questions on the quizes & exams from the home work. offer alot of extra credit !
Great teacher, chem was my first science at OCC and she is a great teacher. Weekly homework and quizes at tutor sesh, which help you alot and you can email her questions so stop by a tutor sesh. I got As on all the exams, and offers a good amount of extra credit. It is chem and there is alot of material, do the hw study and youll pass EZ
Really cares about students understanding the material which is why there's SO MUCH hw, but it helps your grade & prepares you for the exams & quizzes. It's like you don't need to study with all the HW assigned. No tests or quizzes in lab. Follow along and record when she goes over practice questions. Powerpoints are very detailed and help a lot.
Hellman is a really good professor! I took chemistry with another teacher and I passed w/ a C but when I took Hellman I passed the class with an A. Her labs are also pretty easy I always finished early. The tests are really easy as long as you study the worksheets that she gives you.
Come in here if you want a most precise review! 1. Difficulty is a hand downs easy teacher. Amy is 0/5 difficulty. The class its self is 3/5(manageable)+lab 2. Textbook needed? No. Also you have to pay for Wiley +$60(Online HW) 3. Exams: 4 total. 1 is with calculator. BASED ON POWER POINT& HW packet problems from Tutor ses. Easy weekly quiz
Dr. Hellman is an amazing professor, this class has a lot of homework but it helps you be prepared. Since we went online for the spring 2020 semester it was a little difficult to keep up with video lectures, weekly tests and quizzes, and the labs. I think she did better than any other professor I've had I would take her again, highly recommend!
Dr. Hellman is awesome, she's very enthusiastic and gives a lot of extra credit. Homework is 100% online. I took her class in Spring20, due to the pandemic the in-person class was switched to the online type, instead of multiple chapters for 1 exam, she gave us 1 chapter exam per week, and that was super easy!!! Overall easy A.
I am not a chemistry person, but somehow got a 95% in the class. Shes an amazing professor and really cares about the success of her students. She gives a lot of work, but it really helps with understanding the material. She also gives really helpful study guides for her tests. If you work hard, you will do well. She gives you all the resources.
Prof Hellman is a great chemistry professor. She cares for her students and wants them to succeed in the class. She is a down to earth professor and wants you to learn. Since I took this during COVID, for lectures you take notes on videos she makes. If you follow along, take notes, attend sections, I think this is a very passable class.
She's the only reason I survived chemistry and she made it enjoyable too!
Dr Hellman is definitely one of OCC's best. Her class was extremely fun and engaging, especially for a tough online transition. I learned so much and she made this course so easy and fun. If I had another chance to take this class with Dr Hellman, I would take it without hesitation. Take this class with Dr Hellman. You will not regret it!
Dr. Hellman is an awesome teacher. She gave us many opportunities to understand our materials as well as extra credits. I have gained a lot of knowledge about Chemistry after taking her course, and I highly recommend you to take Dr. Hellman's course for your Chemistry class. You will not regret it.
Dr. Hellman is an amazing chemistry professor! She is very straight forward in her lectures and makes chemistry fun for her students. There is quite a bit of homework, but it helps immensely for the quizzes and exams. She cares a lot about helping students succeed and is always willing to chat if we need help. Please take her class!
Her lectures really are what helps you pass along with the homework that she gives contributes to a great amount of the test and quizzes. As long as you do the homework watch the lectures and do notes you will pass, she also is very generous with extra credits.
One of the best professors I've ever had! Dr. Hellman is funny, energetic, kind, and super caring. She really just wants everyone to succeed. Gives out a lot of extra credit. No need to read the textbook because her lectures are enough. Just make sure you watch all her lecture videos, do all your assignments, and attend class and you'll be golden!
She is AMAZING! Really cares about students and made doing this class online a great experience. Normally this is not an online class, but due to covid, it was this fall 2020. I would definitely take her again, her teaching methods are wonderful and she teaches what you need w/ out all the fluff of what you don't. It's work bc it's a 5 unit class.
She is amazing. Everything you need for the weekly quizzes is on the lecture videos and homework. Everything on the homework and quizzes will help for weekly exams. There is never a cumulative final because of weekly quizzes and exams but it's honestly much better this way. She responds fast to emails and you don't need the textbook.
She is super organized, everything you need to succeed is available, lectures are posted so you can watch in your own time. No cumulative exams just tests every week to make sure you understood the topic with clear study guides to help you. She made me want to switch to a Science Major. I HIGHLY recommend taking her class. Best professor I've had.
She's amazing, I am for sure not good at chemistry whatsoever, but she made it manageable for me to pass! Super organized, such a nice and understanding teacher. There are a lot of work, and things to do because it is a 5 credit class. Go to class, do the work and try and you can pass, also offers a lot of extra credit.
Dr. Hellman reminded me why I love my major! Her homework and lectures directly reflect what is on the quizzes and exams. She is super helpful and very relatable. She truly loves what she does and offers tons of extra credit. Though the class is fast-paced and the material is challenging, this class was very manageable.
I have to say Professor Hellman has to be one of the best Professors in Orange County. She truly cares about her students so they understand and be successful in the class. You can tell she really loves her career, she is passionate which is very uncommon to see. I had the pleasure to be her student and I will miss her.
Dr. Hellman is the best professor Ive had in my whole entire college career. Even saying this is an understatement. I took chem @ a diff college and dropped the class bc I was not doing well and it made me have this bad stigma towards chem, but Hellman is AMAZING at her job and made everything understandable and I passed with an A+.TAKE HER!
Dr. Hellman is the BEST professor Ive ever had! Her lectures are amazing, she is truly gifted with being able to teach difficult subject in a way that you will understand. She gives a lot of HW but that is what prepares you for exams. If you put in the time you will do great in her class. I wish all professors where like her!
She treats you like a mother would do with a child which is not surprising since she is a mother who tries to be understanding & give more time if reasonable. She is great and responds to emails quickly & will help you in your future decisions. She will give motivation when needed. Just wished she could live zoom lectors instead of youtube videos
FAVE professor! 4 exams, 1 quiz /week, roughly 2 mastering chem assignments /week (need to buy), 1 prelab & 1 lab /week Grading: exams 50%, quiz 20%, lab 20%, hw 10%. Made chem soo bearable (I use to hate it). Attend lectures or watch online (they're long, 2x/week). Do worksheets, attend skills, study quizzes, study her powerpoints!
Great teacher. Material is difficult but she explains well. Gives a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester. Gives the option to go to lecture in person or watch lecture videos online-Very helpful b/c she goes quickly since there is a lot of material so you can go back and relearn if you missed anything in lecture. Hw due each week. 4 exams
Amy Helman is a gem of a teacher at OCC. I was nervous about taking chem because I was also taking Micro, but her teaching style places emphasis on you actually understanding the material rather than busy work. Her study guides are insanely helpful and are written in a way that the information is easy to digest and stick. Highly recommend.
Professor Hellman was very kind and I have to say I really enjoyed talking with her throughout the semester. She gives quizzes every week in her skills class and the skills class is really good review. I had a lot of fun in her class.
Dr. Hellman makes chemistry fun and interesting. I got a D the first time I took this course with a different professor (not at OCC) and I was devasted. Dr. Hellman is clear with her lectures and explains everything very well. There is a lot of homework but it's material that may be on an exam so its very useful. Highly recommend her class.
Ms. Hellman's lectures are clear and informative. If there's a topic you don't understand, she will work with you to make sure you get it. There's a good amount of homework, but if you pay attention in class, it shouldn't take more than an hour. She's genuinely one of my favorite professors that I've had. Chemistry is fun with her!
Really great teacher who cares about learning and provides EVERYTHING you need to succeed. She makes chemistry easy/manageable! She posts video lectures too so if you miss anything you can rewatch or just ask her in skills or office hours.
I gave Hellman a 2 because although she is a pretty good chemistry teacher, she's not exactly a ball of sunshine. I actually think she's pretty mean. When she lectures, she'll seem down to earth, but when you talk to her one-on one, she's rude. She makes the subject easy to understand, so she's a good teacher. Just prepare for her snarky remarks.
If I had to choose between this chemistry class or falling into a ditch, I would rather fall. She seems to not care for her students' feelings and only thinks this class is a priority. She would definitely pick her favorite students. She's rude and strict, and her lectures are relentless. Choose another professor for chem 110.
I really can't complain about her teaching methods because she provides a lot of resources/office hours to help you understand the concept. She explains everything pretty clearly and doesn't want you to memorize a bunch of stuff. Understanding the concepts and knowing how things react/work is the main goal of this class.
Dr.Hellman is one of the best professors at OCC. You won't regret taking her, I promise. Her exams are extremely straight up if you follow her slides and homework closely. She makes her students feel very welcome and explains everything clearly. You got this!
I didn't understand chem in high school. I had low expectations going into her class, but learned so much. Her lectures are clear and she also provides a recording of it after class for review. Attendance is mandatory. Her labs help you understand the lecture very well and prepare you for test. The study guides are the same as the tests. Recommend!
Very lecture heavy, not a great explainer of the topics and yaps too much.
She doesn't make you unnecessarily memorize anything, she explains things well and does lots of learning checks. I think she's really nice, funny in a quirky way, and clearly just a science nerd. There is a lot of homework and the material is definitely challenging but it is far from impossible to earn a good grade if you put in the effort.
Professor Hellman is a very logical and intelligent teacher, she explained things thoroughly and in depth. Also gave plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions, get help after class (with skills and/or office hours), and just generally seemed like she really cared about our success in the class. The tests were hard, but it is chemistry..
Very good at teaching the material. Her office hours will help you a lot, she gives a lot of quiz hints in there. Loved her during lecture very entertaining and overall an amazing teacher, wish every teacher was like her!
She was honestly awesome
This class was more about understanding the concept than having to do a lot of memorization. She offers tons of content, materials, and support to help get you through each section. She's one of the best teachers I have ever had. f you do the work you will do well and if your not she will be there for you.
Best chemistry teacher
She is a great professor in general, very helpful and generous. There's a quiz or an exam every week, but I thought it was manageable. The skills practice lessons after lectures helped me a lot preparing for the quizzes! Although the content will be heavy in the beginning, her lectures are pretty fun.
She's very nice, helpful, and organized. Her optional worksheets for understanding were super useful and closely matched the quizzes. There's a quiz and exam every week, but the quizzes are easy and straightforward. To prepare for exams, I just reviewed the online homework and skill worksheets. Lots of extra credit, so it's easy to get an A.
I've never taken a Chemistry class before so I was nervous to take this course, but Professor Hellman was awesome. She is very nice and always available to help you in class and has lots of office hours. She clearly explains all material in lecture and goes over it in lab as well. She does lecture fast but she also offers a lot of extra credit.
Dr. Hellman is clear with her lectures &class structure. Her explanations of the material made it easier to understand and relatable. Science is not my cup of tea but she definitely made it more clear to understand and follow along! Do not take another science course with this class! Lots of homework but it helps retain the material. Recommend 100%
Professor Hellman is amazing! Her lectures and exams are outlined perfectly, she created the class where everything really flows well together. In person lectures, youtube video lectures, skills worksheets, exams. Skill worksheets are exactly what you should study for on the quizzes exam. Lots of extra credit, one make up lab opportunity, easy A.
Professor Hellman is an engaging lecturer who breaks down the material well. She provides lots of support through office hours and quiz hints. With consistent effort and using resources like unstuck ai for study prep, you can succeed in this challenging but rewarding class.
Professor Hellman is very helpful and caring. She does give a lot of homework and weekly quizzes but they aren't hard. We had 4 Exams, which were pretty easy I just studied on her worksheets she had and quizzes. She's also pretty funny; would say random jokes in class, which would help make them more fun. labs are really easy and sometimes fun.
She gives extra credit and wants students to succeed. She gets sidetracked, so be ready to learn on your own or through her videos. Don't take her harsh tone personally. Put in effort, practice a lot, and review her skills worksheet—it really helps.
Dr. Hellman has her class down to a "science." She breaks the info into digestible chucks, keeps the material engaging and relates it to real life when possible. She has more office hours than any professor I've had and truly wants to help you succeed. She can only do so much though if you don't show up for yourself. Highly recommend!
Dr. Amy Hellman is the best chemistry professor I've ever had. She's very engaging with her lectures, and will offer a skills lab after her lecture to go over any material. There will be weekly quizzes and homework for this course, and 4 exams in total. In lab, ask her to check your worksheet to avoid getting marked off for points.
Amazing professor! Chem is typically hard, but she makes it easy and offers so much support through practice worksheets, EC, and a skills class, so take advantage. Have her check labs, do the hw, worksheets, go to lecture, and you are set. 4 exams, lots of quizzes but are easy and helpful. Labs are easy, especially with partners. She's the best!
Best Professor ever!! I had never taken Chem before, but she gives you so many opportunities to succeed. Put in the work you will definitely get an A. Be sure to choose lab with her, go to office hours, have her check labs, attend the skills class, and show her that you are willing to work hard. She is also super nice, understanding, and positive.
very easy class, if you watch the videos/ attend lectures you will pass. Professor Hellman is very kind and will help you if you need it. Her lectures are not mandatory after the first two weeks so you can watch the lecture videos she provides instead
very good teacher, her lecture are very easy to understand and the tests are the same with homework like 98% as long as u do the homework you will get an A
