Truly a beautiful human being. Nothing but love for Amy. Super clear explanations and pays attention to details, cares about what students are struggling with, hosts review sessions and many follow up emails before and after tests.
Great professor! It's chem- not exactly "easy" by definition, but her lectures are clear & she is incredibly receptive to students & takes great care to help us w/ things that we may be struggling with. Holds review sessions & always emails to ensure we know what's going. Exams are fair. Study & ask for help when needed & you'll do great!!
Amy breaks down chemistry topics well, in a clear way. She goes through multiple examples of problems and goes through each step. If a student understands chemistry well, lectures can get boring due to the level of breakdown she takes it to.
Nothing but love for Amy. She is kind and funny, will make sure her tests are fair and are graded fairly as well. Exam reviews are usually similar to the actual thing: lectures can be off topic sometimes but she is intelligent and excellent at what she does. Textbook is referenced but not necessary to pass: she'll tell you everything you need.
Amy is truly a great teacher that seems to care about all of her students. While her lectures can get a bit off track, her practice tests certainly are helpful for the real thing. Make sure to go to class and each review session before the test!
Hoeltge is one of the most creative teachers Ive ever had. Shes one of those people who knows her material AND can explain it to those who dont. Chemistry is my most difficult course this semester but when I leave her lecture, I feel confident enough to teach what I learned to someone else. Shes also quick to answer emails, which is nice.
Amy is funny and grows on you quickly but her lectures are not well suited for the exams. She is a great conceptual teacher but really struggles to explain the calculations, which 032 is HEAVY in. She also flies through her notes, often glossing over key details. Take Ruggles if you have the option. You will do much better on the exams with him
Dr Hoeltge is amazing! She incorporates the conceptual stuff into the calculations with the class so we can see how to do the problems in the homework and on the exams. Shes compassionate, funny, and a great role model for me - a woman in science! I would recommend her to anyone.
This has been the hardest but most rewarding class Ive taken. It calculation HEAVY but Amy takes the time to explain not only HOW to do them but also WHY we set them up the way we do. You wont have to memorize anything because she teaches conceptually. She is also very present and listens when you just need to talk. We all need someone like her.
The best prof for Chem 32. This class is HARD but Amy was on top of it. Shes quick, for sure, but if you actually do the homework and visit her with questions, you will be fine. She often opens weekend office hours which is very helpful for those of us with heavy schedules. Amy gets that we have lives and her compassion is endless.
THE BEST! Highly recommend Hoeltge!
I hope UVM knows how valuable this prof is. Amy knows her material and the woman can teach! She is always available outside of class and she really puts a person at ease. At first you might think she is wasting time talking about all the conceptual stuff. Then you realize all of that makes the calculations so much easier to understand.
Holy hell this class was the most difficult thing I have ever done. Her lectures are excellent but visit her office hours because she will have a level conversation with you. She describes chemistry like a story and paints a really clear picture. Plus she listens. I shared a lot and she always just listened. Sometimes you just need that.
I would recommend Hoeltge to anyone for Chem.
CHEM 032 tests were combined with Ruggles and were composed of mostly questions from Ruggles. Amy does do a lot of practice problems in lecture but she moves too quickly to write down everything. Highly reccomend doing practice problems, practice exams, and going to SI sessions.
This class was so hard. I personally found her lectures to be unhelpful and ended up trying to teach myself everything outside of class. She would move so quickly and breeze past some important topics. I didn't like her style of teaching at all but I could tell she was very caring and wanted her students to succeed.
I loved her teaching style. She definitely moves fast but there is a lot of material to cover. She posts all of her notes online so you never miss anything and she saves the calculations to do live with the class. No complaints here!
The class is tough and she makes you work for it but people, this lady can teach! I signed up for her orgo class this summer, too.
Excellent!
Really liked Amy. She makes lectures very straight forward and she is transparent with what is on the test. Chem 031 and Chem 032 are insanely hard classes as a freshman and she makes you work for your grade. You cannot slack off in this class. Tests are primarily how students receive their grades. Definitely better than Ruggles.
Lectures are very straightforward but extremely fast, which is understandable since there was a lot of material to cover. Had her for chem 31 as well and her exams are straightforward. Ruggles wrote majority of the exams for and his approach and exams are very different. Felt like I went in blind for the exams. Felt bad for the first and curved it
Here is a person who can teach! Amy spends a lot of time walking us through conceptual material as it relates to calculations. But you have to keep up with homework or you will die on exams. She was very available outside of class, even on weekends! She cares about our wellbeing, too, which I thought was endearing. I would recommend Amy to anyone.
I could have taken this during the year but Dr H was teaching it this Summer and I knew I wanted her. She is very available, brilliant, and understanding. Organic is known for weeding people out but Dr H has a bunch of different ways to help explain the most confusing stuff (stereochemistry!). Exams are hard but she will not give up on you.
She tries to be funny during lecture which is actually pretty nice because she has a good personality but her teaching isnt good as we just sit and stare at a screen while she talks for 50 minutes and shes extremely fast moving and doesnt seem to care that you as a student have other classes to work on
She is an awesome person, but I feel as though she does not explain very well what she is doing during class. This class is HARD. Ruggles seems to be a hard lecturer but prepares you much better for the exam. Pick your poison, easy lecture or easy exam.
Amy is very smart professor. She speak quickly but will be able to see you for help outside of class anytime. Her exam review prepare very well and she has care for her student. This class is difficult but she is with you and explain whatever you need!
I have Dr. Hoeltge now for CHEM031 and will take her in the Spring for orgo. She is clear about expectations, thorough in class, available outside of class (even on weekends), and very much prepares us for exams. If you show up, take notes, and take the class seriously, you will appreciate this prof!
Dr H is there for all the way from amazing lectures (funny!) to personal office hours to very helpful exam review sessions. She comes in on Sundays to basically deliver a parallel exam. Anyone who has not noticed this has not been paying attention. Highly recommend!!
I am a CE student destined for med school and I found Amy to be very compassionate, respectful, knowledgeable, and freely giving of her time. The course was very difficult and calculation heavy but she had a curious way of teaching the concepts and using the calcs as practical applications. Not going to lie - you MUST do the homework to succeed.
Prof. Hoeltge has a lot to cover and little time to do it in CHEM 031. She is the preferred teacher of all the current instructors, and she makes the lectures bearable. Regardless of your professor, you have to study hard to get a decent grade (5/8 of your grade is from exams), but with her help hopefully you will do okay!
Talks a little fast during lectures, but posts material beforehand. Helpful, nice, and has a sense of humor.
when you are in class and try to comprehend what she is going over you cannot physically pay attention to both her rate of talking and keep up on notes/ doing problems. She often does in-class problems that are helpful, but she doesn't give enough info (conversions rates/molecular weights, etc) so the whole thing is just a brainless copy fest.
When the semester first started I had high hopes for Hoeltge, but I was disappointed. Absolutely flies through lectures. I went to her office hours asking for help because I was struggling, and she was incredibly dismissive. Is giving a mid-term 3 days before finals week starts in addition to a final. Would recommend taking with anyone else.
Hoeltge does speed through the material BUT there is a ton of material to cover in a short amount of time. She is exceedingly available outside of class, very compassionate, and always prepared to explain something from another angle. It's organic chemistry, not basket weaving. I would recommend her to anyone.
She's always available and I really like her teaching style. She's very clear about expectations and she has a big heart. She shared her personal lecture notes with us and she even offered weekend office hours on Teams after COVID closed the school. Last semester was stressful with the sudden move online but Hoeltge never let us down.
Amy Hoeltage is really nice but does not prepare you well for exams. Many things on the exams are not covered in the lectures and I spent most of this course trying to teach myself the material outside of class. She also flies through the material, but she is available outside of class for extra help.
This professor was great, but heavily depended on lectures. I paid attention in class, but felt like I had to teach myself most of the time. I spent 90% each week on this class and felt like I was getting nowhere. She is very nice and goes out of her way to help you and meet outside class! Exams are very difficult, seem easy but are worded oddly.
Amy is awesome! She is a very personable professor and really cares about student success. Every sunday she holds long problem review sessions in addition to lecture for people who want extra chemistry. Her lectures are straightforward. I wish she taught upper level chem because I would love to continue on with her.
Chem is the most difficult class I had, and Amy definitely did a great job in her lectures, I highly recommend, she's definitely the best for CHEM032 and 031
Dr. Hoeltge is a great professor, and she is very knowledgeable about chemistry. I really like the structure of her lectures because she uses a whiteboard to draw and solve problems. Her review sessions before exams are very helpful, and it's easier to do well on exams if you go to those.
Professor Hoeltge is great! She is so accessible outside of class and I really appreciated her help. That being said, it is a HARD class, but you can do well. Definitely give yourself plenty of time to study in advance. Professor Hoeltge is the best option you will have, so go out of your way to get her!
I absolutely love Amy but her teaching style is not for me. I found that her chemistry lectures were way to conceptually based and left me fending for myself when it came to my ability to do chapter problems. I also think it is a disadvantage that she does not make the tests. My friends who took Ruggles felt overall more prepared for the Exams.
Professor Hoeltge is very nice as a person, but as a professor she isn't very good. She absolutely flies through lectures so fast that I can't comprehend any of the material. She explains things in ways the quite honestly don't make sense to me, and when you ask for clarification she's a bit dismissive and unhelpful. Exams are extremely difficult
Honestly the best option for CHEM031/032. Amy is very accessible outside of class, she listens when you just need to talk, gives detailed and informative lectures, and tells us exactly which homework problems to try after each class. I always felt very prepared for exams and I did well. She makes you work for it but thats why were there.
Hoeltge is the best. Her lectures are extremely clear and she includes many examples (a lot of which are right off the exams), which I think is what really helped me succeed in this course compared to my friends with other profs. Homework isn't mandatory, quizzes will boost your grade, and exams are not bad if you're prepared. She's funny af too.
This class will test everything you have. This semester has been so hard and I almost withdrew. Amy encouraged me to stick with it and she promised to help me with the material anytime I needed it. She also promised to listen anytime I needed it. Besties, she has never let me down. Sometimes I think office hours with Amy is better than therapy.
Amy is AMAZING. Her teaching style is that rather than giving you the formula or steps to memorize she explains the why and how so it really makes sense and sticks. I highly suggest reading (or at least skimming) the reading before she goes over the chapter in class, it helped a lot in keeping up with her in lecture. She's kind and genuinely cares.
If you want someone who cares and seriously knows how to teach, pick Amy for 31/32. She goes out of her way to help you and she is very approachable.
Amy cares so much about her students and is always willing to answer any questions. She gives you everything you need to get a good grade in the class I think. Her review and problem solving sessions are so helpful. Do the recommended homework problems!! They help so much. I loved this class and I can't wait until I can take a class with Amy again.
Dr. Hoeltge is THE choice for chem if you want to get through it with your sanity. Sometimes I felt like she was almost more of a counselor or a therapist with the way she listened to me throughout the semester. She is a brilliant chemist and teacher and an even more amazing support. She has immense compassion for her students.
Professor Hoeltge is the best CHEM031 professor at UVM, undoubtedly. She is a solid lecturer, provides extensive help outside of class, and most importantly, actually cares about her students. I'd highly recommend her to any students taking CHEM031 (or any other Chemistry class for that matter).
Professor Hoeltge gives great lectures. She is funny but also upfront and honest. She answers emails fairly quickly and is very helpful. Chemistry is not the easiest class, but Amy made it a good experience. I would definitely take a class with her again.
One of the most entertaining lecturers I've ever had, she very gracefully references life experiences with chemistry which keeps me focused on the material. The grading is a little strict but absolutely fair. She is also exceedingly available for help outside of class.
Shes probably the best choice for Chem Teachers. Good lectures, great grading policies. Take her over any other chem professor if you get the chance
I really liked Professor Hoeltge's teaching style. She kept class interesting, and I really liked that she mainly focused on practice problems and not just general facts. Going to lecture is important because this class is difficult, and she takes the time in class to make sure people understand. Her review sessions are very comprehensive too!
Absolutely love Professor Hoeltge!! I was so nervous to take chem freshmen year but she made it so fun to go to class. She is constantly joking around in a way that makes learning difficult material entertaining. If you are taking chemistry in the future, definitely try to get her as your professor
I honestly really like her and thought that CHEM 042 was fine. She can be unclear at times but honestly it's probably cause the material is difficult. She's cool though.
Dr Hoeltge is the GOAT! She knows her stuff, she can teach, and she really cares. Hit her up for extra help or if you just need someone to listen to you about life. She does expect you to earn your grade but she’s super fair, funny, and patient. A solid choice for Gen Chem or Orgo (I had her for both)
Do yourself a favor and make SURE you take orgo with Amy! She is brilliant, funny, so down to earth for an old lady, and she CARES. Besties, this is huge for a hard class like organic chemistry.
Prof Hoeltge is THE ONE to get for chem! She makes a hard class fun and accessible. Her practice tests are so helpful too.
Even though I'm not doing all that well in Hoetlge's class, or particularly enjoying it, I have to give her credit. She understands how hard her subject is and tries to make it easier. She's super down-to-earth and easy to listen to. The antithesis of the typical STEM professor who thinks they're the best thing since sliced bread.
Very funny and helpful
i absolutely love amy, she is so funny and I never dreaded going to class! her class is not easy, but if you study and take advantage of the resources she gives you you'll do great.
Amy was organized, very accessible, friendly, and compassionate. She never lost her patience with me (even though I asked the same questions multiple times). It was nice to see a woman simply doing amazing work in STEM without making a big deal about being a woman in STEM. I always left her office hours feeling confident and grounded.
If you have to take organic chem, do yourself a favor and take 042 with Amy. She makes a difficult topic so much easier to grasp and she really wants her students to succeed. Also such a funny person-- she was constantly cracking jokes during her lectures, which made the class seem a lot less daunting. Highly recommend!
Amy is nice and likes to joke, which makes class less awful. she was somewhat unclear sometimes and her jokes could get in the way of material we needed to know
Organic chemistry is hard, and Amy is a professor who understands that. She provides opportunities to survive the class by supplying students with many practice exams that reflect the midterms and the final. Grading and proper study technique is laid out very clearly, and she really does want students to succeed. She is very funny, I recommend!
Dr. Hoeltge is a tough cookie and she will make you work for your grade. So do NOT mistake her compassion for naitvete. Still, she is always available, so easy going, and she will help you understand the material rather than memorize. I also appreciated how great she was at listening. Sometimes things get hard and orgo is no picnic.
Currently in her summer organic course. I visit her in-person office hours for extra help and find her to be understanding, wildly brilliant, VERY cool, and approachable. Though a bit of a softie, her boundaries are crystal clear. You MUST put in the work. She will give you her time and attention (and maybe even a plant), and you WILL succeed.
Amy is easily the nicest professor I have ever taken a class with. Do not make the mistake of not meeting with her outside of class. She was so understanding and helped me to pass a class that I was convinced I was going to fail. If you put in the work, she goes out of her way to help you succeed. She is also super funny which is a plus.
The material was tough but she made it fair to all students to get a good grade. Her lectures went pretty fast, and I highly suggest going to them. Although she posts the lecture notes online, it isnt very specific unless you're in class listening. ALL her practice exams looked the same as the actual exam, and quizzes were open note
Chem has a lot of moving parts and the course is challenging af but Amy is very patient and clear. She is super available outside of class for extra help and I appreciate her compassion too. She told me to make sure I take time for self care and that was everything!
Amy is such a great professor, with entertaining lectures. She once blew up a ballon in front of us, and would sometimes reference student drinking in such a funny way. My only issue is not of her but of the CHEM 031 course, that the exams are unbelievably difficult. The class averages around a 65-70%. Its crazy, but I love amy
Nice to see a visible member of the LGBTQA+ fam in her position! Amy is the GOAT. She has a gift for explaining things multiple ways, which makes the material feel more accessible. There is something really grounding about her which is fabulous for a beast of a class like chem. Chill lady... very understanding. Highly recommend.
Kind, compassionate, and brilliant. Cannot recommend Dr. H highly enough!
Professor Hoeltge was an absolute pleasure to have. She is so funny, and compassionate towards her students. All the praise I've seen here for here is 100% deserved. Her in-class teaching is accurate to the material on the tests, her supplemental problems are super useful, and she provides so much of her times toward extra review/study sessions. :)
Amazing person, not a wonderful teacher. Stopped going to lectures halfway through and taught myself the material better. The Monday problem-solving sessions and exam reviews are super helpful, but for everything else, it's like she forgot it's an intro class and uses the phrase "according to data" to back up everything she says rather than teach
Absolutely amazing. She gives clear lectures and answers questions easily even in massive lectures. She is always available during office hours and is incredibly supportive. Always delivers problems to us that she recommends for exam prep, and always has a pre-exam zoom to go over any further questions anyone has before the exam.
So helpful and endlessly available. This is a prof you NEED for a tough course like Chem. Looking forward to orgo with her next semester!
Amy is a laid back professor, who is always willing to help. I found some of her explanations to be long-winded and sometimes the textbook would help me out more, but she is very knowledgeable in what she is doing.
Amy is an absolute GODDESS. Chem 31 can be a really tough class and she is your absolute best bet to get through it. Even though attendance isn't mandatory GO TO LECTURE. She's SUPER responsive to email and truly cares that her students succeed. If you rly want to do well on exams DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS every week even though they aren't graded.
Amy was a great professor for CHEM 031. If you had to choose a professor for this course I would recommend her. Many people have difficulty with this course due to the reasoning and logic needed for it; however, Amy makes herself available for any questions with her office hours. Do the homework questions and quizzes and you'll be fine.
If you have to take chem, Amy is the one to get. She meets your efforts 200% and is kind, patient, and incredibly smart. Expectations are clearly outlined and the work is rigorous but fair. You will learn a lot about chemistry and yourself in this class.
Amy is the best, as you can see from the other glowing reviews. She has an incredible ability to make difficult topics extremely easy to understand. She is also willing to spend massive amounts of time outside of class to help students. Chem 031 is not the easiest class, but Amy honestly made learning the material fun.
Amy's lectures weren't that helpful to me bc I don't like her style of explaining things, so I just read the textbook. The exams are brutal, but you can still get an A even if you get Cs on exams. Do well on the final and in labs and you'll be fine. It's not a very fun class but Amy does send out pics of cats and dogs with her emails.
Amy is a fantastic chem professor. She is very accessible outside of class, and she wants everyone to succeed. The class is test-heavy, but doing practice problems helps a lot. Amy made CHEM 031 much more bearable.
Great lecturer. Information is all clearly delivered and easily absorbed.
Amy is extremely intelligent. She is very funny and hip when it comes to lecturing. She is accessible outside class and offers a lot of different resources for preparing for tests. She is sometimes a bit confusing because she is so smart, if that makes sense. It sometimes took a little decrypting to understand what she means. Class is pretty hard.
Amy is a really sweet professor and her class was amazing. CHEM 031 is a difficult class no matter what professor you have, but from what I've heard about the other professors, Amy is definitely the best for the class.
Currently taking organic chem with Amy after having her for gen chem. Just like gen chem, you have to put in the work (homework mostly). Major chill, grounded vibes with this prof. She communicates clearly and fairly and is available for help all the time.
Absolutely no empathy for her students. Have heard her tell students that they're gonna fail the class and offered no help. Lectures are also unorganized and confusing to follow. She gets mad when people don't understand her. Skipped all her classes and used the textbook, still got an A. Her teaching made it harder to understand the material.
Amy is kind, funny and accessible outside of class. Lectures move quickly and I often left feeling very confused. She will round grades (unlike Ruggles). Do the homework, it helps. It's easy to fall behind. Going to SI sessions helped me with gen chem. Definitely not an easy course. Hardest I have ever worked for a B+.
Amy was one of the kindest professors I've had. She was patient and very available outside of class for extra help. She talked a little fast in class but was always willing to repeat herself and answer questions when people had them. I had several medical issues over the semester and she was very supportive.
Challenging course - great prof! Dr. Hoeltge was clear, fair, compassionate, and kind. Exams are difficult so make sure you keep up with the homework. She is very helpful during office hours and always available.
Organic chemistry is a challenging course and I was terrified going into it. Amy was warm, patient, and kind. She expects you to put in the work behind the scenes but she will meet you where you are and help you succeed. She's also a great listener if you just need support in general. I would recommend this prof to anyone.
This course will put hair on your chest, that's for sure. Hoeltge knows her chem and gives the best lectures. She seems pretty dedicated and her sense of humor helps a lot, too. All around solid prof.
Nothing but love for Amy. Seriously the most understanding prof I've had. Lectures move fast and exams are hard but grading is clear and points are chunked out evenly. 25% lab, 25% final, 25% quizzes, 25% exams. You'll do well if you keep up with the practice problems. I didn't and that's on me.
Amy is the kindest, most understanding prof I've had at UVM. She's clear about expectations, grades fairly, shows up prepared and in good spirits, and holds a warm space for a very large class. If you must take a chem course, try to get her.
Very clear grading criteria, super supportive prof. Amy was available on weekends and evenings, which was very helpful given my full schedule. She was patient and kind and very accommodating. This course will challenge you in many ways but I think every chem class is like that. This prof truly cares about her students and it showed.
Hoeltge clearly knows what she's talking about and is passionate about it but that didn't translate to clear and concise teaching for me. I tried really hard to understand what was happening but boy did those words go in one ear and out the other.
Amy is the best professor ever! Super smart, very passionate, and very accessible for help. Homework is optional, which is a slippery slope, but really puts you in charge of your own learning. I went in to gen chem hating it, and came out with a possible chem minor because I'm so inspired by how much I learned! Definitely go to class and take notes
Although gen chem of itself is a difficult class, Amy taught in a way that made it less scary. Homework was optional, and so was attendance, but I would recommend doing both. This class isn't easy, but if you put in some extra effort and go to Amy outside of class for questions/use the tutoring center, it is definitely doable. I loved having Amy!
Intro chem is going to be one of the hardest classes you take on campus (highest drop out rate and fail rate). So it is definitely a hard class to teach... I found that some of the ways Amy would explain things was more confusing than how I had learned it in the past. She cares a lot about you though and GO TO OFFICE HOURS especially with the TA's!
Lectures well but is unwilling to work with students having genuine, excusable issues. Gave me all zeros for assignments I missed while hospitalized and was unwilling to give extensions because "the syllabus is clear, we don't give those for any reason". Exams were quite difficult and pretty much every student in the class had a miserable time.
worst experience of my entire life
The online program we used is god awful. You could understand 95% of material and consistently get 70s of exams and quizzes because of the program grading system. She's a good teacher but please just write your tests.
I'm taking her class now (CHEM1400) and she is amazing. Very understanding and always available to help. The online program is new for the course and there are a lot of kinks to work out but she is always willing to help and gives us the benefit of the doubt with partial credit. She explains things well and has a kind and very grounded demeanor.
Okay not going to lie general chemistry is a very hard class, however, this would be the case for any professor. Amy is an incredible professor who genuinely respects and cares for her students. She responds to emails impressively fast and holds many different office hours. She also gives a lot of partial credit!
Amy is the most compassionate individual I've ever met. This class is HARD and you have to put in the work but Amy is brilliant and very available for help, gives partial credit, and is open to giving generous extensions for work. She's fr the one to take for chem!
Chem is very demanding but Dr Hoeltge has a way of pushing you toward success while also making you feel validated in the struggle. She's smart, patient, and has a very calm vibe. You can trust this prof.
this class is HARD. the new online platform does suck at grading, and makes the lectures basically useless in that I found it easier to basically self-study the entire course. however, amy is always willing to help you out if you go to office hours, and will give you back many points. would be a strong 5 star rating if not for the online platform.
This woman is a SOLID citizen.
Amy is funny, engaging and energetic in lecture, but sometimes can move very quickly or go on tangents about things outside the scope of the class. There is no graded homework, so tests and quizzes matter a lot, but they're all online and open note/internet. She gives tons of partial credit if you go to her office hours. Overall solid professor!
Use office hours! VERY accessible outside of class and VERY understanding. Online learning platform is awful, but Amy is great. Never attended class and self-studied, was successful. Hard class, but Amy is one of the better professors. Only graded on quizzes/tests, but grading policy is fair. Would rate a 5 if not for online platform. Great person
Amy is a remarkably pleasant person. She has a very grounding energy and explains things clearly. Grading is fair and expectations are fully communicated. I will miss her encouraging class announcements and photos.
I am not a chem person at all but I had to take chem 1 and I am so happy that I got amy. She is amazing and funny and made chemistry enjoyable. Other than labs, the class is only graded on quizzes (drop the worst 2) and tests (worst score is replaced by your best). She did bump me up from an a- to an a just because I improved through the semester!!
Amy is a very unique woman. The course was as hard as I thought it would be but this prof is clear, fair, and very communicative. There's also something magical about her that leaves you feeling calm. It's like my blood pressure dropped a few notches after being around her, which helps in a scary class like chem!
She's allergic to teaching whats on the exams.
Very clear communication and teaching style. You have to put in the work for this course but Amy is very compassionate and available outside of class for extra help. Highly recommend.
Super easy online class structure and tests and quizzes were extremely easy as long as you did the homework! Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend attending lecture as she is sweet, caring, and funny. Overall one of the best professors I've ever had.
This is one of those huge lecture classes so you need to manage your time on your own but she sends out regular reminders, explains things clearly, and is very fair and approachable outside of class. She holds hard boundaries in class but she's a sweetheart if you meet with her during office hours. Definitely the one to take for chem.
Solid prof overall. She's an unusually warm and pleasant individual, and makes orgo feel just a bit less scary. Lectures are in person. She shares her notes online in case you miss class. Office hours are very helpful. Assignments are online and she's flexible with deadlines.
Amy is so awesome I'm a huge fan she's a great teacher and a super cool person. One thing thats important to note though is that you can go to office hours and get points back on online quizzes and tests. this is nice of amy but also very necessary for almost every student to stay on top of because the grading on this platform is very finnicky.
This prof is a SWEETHEART. She is super chill, scary smart, and seems to have endless patience.
This woman teaches huge classes but I never felt like just a number and she was always prepared and very communicative. Office hours are where you will really feel seen and she sets specific time slots aside for each student so you get your time. Loved all her plants too!
Lectures were incredibly hard to follow. She didn't really teach what would be on the quizzes or exams so you have to find that stuff on your own (online). She uses ALEKS which is amazing because the quizzes help a lot for the exams (they provide practice questions with answers SAVE THEM!!)
Amy is the GOAT. The online platform was horrible about grading but you can go to office hours and she will credit you if you got points off unfairly. She shares her lecture notes online which I really appreciate because she would post them the day before class and I could print them out.
Loved Amy. Hated ALEKS.
I'm taking orgo with Amy now and I'm finding it very organized and challenging, just what I was hoping for. Amy is very responsive to emails (the lecture is online) and very compassionate. She is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I'm glad I took this course over Summer so I could focus on just it!
Taking orgo with Amy now. It's a hybrid course with online lectures and in person labs. Honestly, I'd love to take another class on campus with this prof. She's easy going and very helpful during in person office hours. I love the freedom she gives us each week with assignments. I have been able to work full time and manage this course with ease.
Dr. Hoeltge is very articulate, knowledgeable, and organized. Her teaching style very much worked for me and I found her to be warm and kind. Excellent choice for chem.
Amy definitely knows her stuff and communicates in a very clear manner. That should just be expected of any prof, though. What stands out for me about this prof is her compassion, her patience, and her ability to listen. Chem is hard and it's nice to feel seen in that, and helped through it, especially by the prof.
Amy is a real one! Took this course during summer and was really happy with the layout. She's really chill and grounded and her teaching is clear and fair. Unexpected win for a chem prof!
I withdrew from this course for personal reasons. I will retake it again and I will be sure to sign up for Amy's class. She is unbelievably chill, patient, and understanding. Plus, I love her teaching style. You will have to put in work on your own but that's to be expected with a chem course.
Seriously, UVM, why are you making her teach orgo next semester? I want to continue in her class in Chem 2. I never expected a STEM prof to be so connected, understanding, and present. I feel seen and safe in this class and I fear next semester without her!
She seems like a very chill person, but don't expect to get a ton out of the class. Her lectures aren't very clear and she never takes questions. Tests and quizzes are online and open note, so you can easily get a good grade but will really only get anything out of the class if you take the time to do so on your own.
Amy is very kind, but her lectures can be a bit confusing, and she doesn't really take questions. Lectures are optional but I recommend going because they still provide some clarity. All quizzes and exams are online, open-note so it's really easy to get a good grade in this class- highly recommend but only if you don't need to take chem later on.
Dr. Hoeltge is a rare find; a totally unexpected experience for a class like chemistry. Compassion, brilliance, patience, and high standards make for a delicious learning environment. I'm not an A student kissing up. I'm just moved by this woman's influence and I wish she was teaching 1450 next sem.
Amy is a sweetheart. Her lectures are funny and clear, she shares her notes, and office hours are so chill. Exams are totally fair and she gives you a second shot to fix the ones you got wrong. She takes the time to make sure we understand before she moves on and I fr appreciate how she considers that we have other classes going on, not just chem.
If you have to take gen chem, she is the one to get. Her syllabus is crystal clear, she knows her material, and there's something I can't explain about her. You'll just feel better being around her. I don't know how she made it into STEM but I applaud whomever hired her. She's rare, in a great way. When I leave class, I feel like I could teach it.
Amy is great - she explains things clearly and is super helpful in office hours. The online platform can be tricky, but using Unstuck ai along with the ALEKS quizzes really helped me prep for exams. Definitely take this class if you can.
I love Amy shes so funny
Amy is a real one. She understands she's teaching a hard class and that we are stressed af. You will notice her care even if she's light hearted and funny af. She knows her chemistry too. Wish she was teaching chem 2 instead of orgo next sem!
Amy is lovely, best 1400 prof imo. Lectures can be hard, but she explains thoroughly and clearly, shares her notes, and makes sure we understand. Exams and quizzes were online and open note, questions were sometimes difficult because they were generated by ALEKS but could be worse. Amy is funny, nice, and even though I hate chem I loved her class.
Okay, so this class was super easy due to online tests and quizzes and having multiple tries. However, Amy is really hard to follow during lectures and is almost too smart to teach this class. She seems to forget she is teaching people who have no chemistry background. Easy to get an A but hard to learn chem is how I would describe Amy's class.
i love you Amy Hoeltge.
I'm not a chem star but Amy's teaching style worked for me to the point where I felt like I could teach the stuff after every class. Also really appreciated the flexibility with the online quizzes and exams. She seems to get that we have other classes and lives. Would def rec Amy to anyone for chem! And I loved her plants and cats ^..^
LOVE HER. Fair, consistent, empathetic, clear, brilliant, quirky af (in a great way), everything you want in a prof for a big scary chem class!
Amy was amazing and I felt calm and grounded around her. She had great communication and her class was organized and fair. She shares her notes so you don't have to worry if you miss something, and she's very accessible by email. I was scared of this class tbh. I'd take any chem class with her after experiencing this one.
Amy's class is on the easier side with online tests and quizzes. However she is not super helpful in lecture and the notes are a bit confusing. If you have questions though it is easy to go to her after class or during office hours. And she really cares about her students well being.
Amy is easily the coolest professor I've had and she's such a kind person, I just struggled in her class a lot. I didn't love how everything was on ALEKS because it was all math and I felt like I had to teach myself the course using the textbook since her lectures were dense. This course isn't impossible -- just have to stay on top of the notes
I love Amy Hoeltge, her lectures aren't the best because the way she teaches is like we are as smart as she is and the pace and amount of content is a lot. But, shes super helpful and caring and makes it easy to get through Chem 1.
Her lectures can be confusing, but reading the chapter and doing ALEKs helped me understand more. She is a lenient grader, which makes up for the occasional confusion. Even though she's nice with grades you should still rlly go to lecture and pay attention though.
She's a cool person but doesn't go through enough examples in class without the answer already being given to you. When I've asked her for help, she has been impatient and makes me feel stupid which defeats the whole point of teaching. She forgets that it doesn't come naturally to most people and expects that we're crystal clear on prior material.
she doesn't teach what's needed, she posts a half ass pdf and just points at it, doesn't specify what she's talking about so if you're head is down writing you will not know what's happening . she's also so rude, she doesn't care about your accommodations, and will talk down to you for asking. i learn more about her alternative lifestyle than orgo.
Her lectures are all over the place, but unlike Some Other Professors they actually relate to what will be on the test. Some other review says she just thinks everyone is as smart as her which yeah that's true. Super lenient grader.
I took her for gen chem and now for orgo and with amy you either love her or hate her. all the quizzes and tests are online and you have a week to do each one, and if youre good at cheating then you can easily get an A in this class. in lecture around half of whats on the slides and most of what she says doesn't apply, she is probably too smart
I had her for gen chem also and imo she is much better for gen chem than orgo. Left every class feeling more confused than when I got there. For lectures she opens up a pdf and talks about it without actually showing how to do the problems you would see on quizzes. Learned 95% of the content from the ALEKS example button and the textbook.
Orgo is challenging. Amy is kind, helpful, and maybe a little too smart. I appreciate that she posts her lecture notes and that we have flexible quiz deadlines. I don't think I would be doing as well in this kind of class if I didn't have this prof. I'm in it now so I don't know my grade but I'm in the B range.
I'm paying a lot of $$ for my education and I want my profs to be “too smart”! Yes, Amy is brilliant. There probably aren't a lot of stupid ppl in the chem dept. Amy is also warm, friendly, and patient. She posts her notes so we have them before class and she does example problems with us. Grading is fair. Expectations are clearly outlined.
Dr Hoeltge is a great pick for orgo. She's very communicative and well prepared. The course expectations and grading scheme are well outlined and she's very flexible and understanding. Highly recommend any class with this prof.
Amy is the GOAT for chem!
This was a very difficult semester for me (personal stuff). Amy was so patient and kind. I reached out early in the semester and told her I was having personal problems and we worked out a plan that helped me succeed. I'm probably going to get a C in the class but I'll take it! Orgo is HARD but Amy seems to understand. Communication is key!
Big love for Amy. I had to take this dreadful course to graduate and I was petrified. This woman really cares about her students and REALLY knows her chemistry. I appreciated all of the extra help in office hours and her clear, kind communication style. The course isn't easy and she makes us work, and somehow it feels good.
literally one of the nicest humans I've ever met
I'm so glad this class is behind me and I don't think my nervous system would have survived it with any other professor. You don't expect a great scientist to also be a great teacher and you extra don't expect that person to also be a compassionate, caring soul. Amy is a unicorn. What a win!
easiest class ever. online quizzes and exams, you have 2-3 tries per test. shes super engaging in class but attendance will diminish because you really do not need to go
so grateful
Dr. Hoeltge is a rare find. She's warm, quirky, friendly, and weirdly smart about chem, and very skilled at weaving it all together for orgo. You will feel seen, heard, comfortable, and inspired in this class. You won't realize it until midway through and you won't really appreciate it until the end. She's a fabulous professor
For so many reasons, Amy was by far my favorite professor at UVM. If you have the chance to take a class with her, please please do it.
Your grade will be hard earned. At the same time, you will be tremendously supported by this professor. She is warm, kind, and compassionate. Don't be afraid to visit her office hours. It took me half a semester to gather the courage to drop in and it was so well worth it.
Very kind and knowledgeable. Explains difficult things well and was very warm and approachable. Rubric was clear and she followed through on everything. Highly recommend this prof if you must take this scary class.
Amy seems to believe that anyone can do orgo and never gives up on you. She has a very kind, grounding energy in office hours and a unique way of helping you realize your gifts in life. I wasn't expecting to learn more about myself in a chem class but here we are and I'm not mad. You will be grateful to take a class with her.
I took the hybrid class this summer. Amy was very kind and accessible for help both on lab days and on Teams, and she made the content very manageable. I had heard great things about her and I'm grateful to have had this experience. I'm also grateful to be done with organic chemistry!
Such gratitude for this prof! Very clear, fair, and kind.
I left every single lecture more confused; not a good lecturer.
Amy is very clear and kind, provides her personal notes on Brightspace, does extra examples in class, and is very accessible outside of lecture time. I hope to take her again next semester when it fits better in my schedule.
I'm in this class now and I need to say this is a growing up moment. You will put in the time or you will not make it. Period. I just went from a 54% on exam 1 to an 88% on exam 2 taking her advice about homework, rewriting class notes, and doing the practice tests. It works. Suck it up and you will succeed.
Amy is by far my fav prof at UVM. She gives you the tools you need and allows you the space to work for it. If you get lost, she's there and she's kind about it. I think any hate she gets is from ppl who would rather have the info spoon fed to them. Chem isn't like that. This isn't hs anymore.
Dr Hoeltge is always prepared, posts her notes online for free, and does tons of additional problems in class. Math knowledge is required for the course so you need to be on top of that if you want to keep up. She's a genius hippie and that's a bit quirky but I love the class and I wish she was teaching Gen Chem 2!
Attend every lecture but know that you'll have to consistently practice outside of class to do well. Her lectures are fast and full of confusing words and tangents. She has pretty generous grading policies that make it a lot easier to get a good grade in the class. She can be condescending sometimes when you talk to her, but usually friendly
This class moves like train and you need to put in significant time doing homework to keep up but that's just chem. Amy gives practice tests and office hours that are helpful if you get lost. She has a friendly disposition in my opinion.
- the class went back to in person paper exams but she gives you a practice one a week ahead that helps - do the homework - talks fast and is all business in class but drops hints and shares her notes - very pleasant and kind in office hours - fair grading
I like Amy. She explains things well (tho quickly), does extra calcs, and has a pleasant demeanor. She does not like ppl talking in class and if you get caught you will want to crawl into a hole. I don't like chem but she's a solid choice if you have to take it
Tests are difficult but she makes it easy to do well in the class.
This was a very difficult course. I took chemistry in high school, and I believe that is the only reason I passed this class. I would feel bad for anyone who's first time taking chemistry is this course.
She is on a power trip. Save yourself please. DO NOT TAKE HER.
It's a chem course. It's going to be hard. Amy's a solid choice and a great prof.
Multiple choice exams with a practice test given beforehand. Expect to do a lot of homework. Amy is very supportive and explains things well. Grading is very fair and expectations are clear. Labs are fun.
I'm expecting an A- but might end up with an A. It didn't start out that way but I pulled it together after the first exam. This is a challenging course but if you put in the effort, it'll pay off. I'd take Amy again for sure. She's always available, very encouraging, and answers emails quickly.
Amy is compassionate and kind. Her tests are fair and she gets the grades done very quickly so you know how you did. Her practice tests are everything. She gives you everything you need to succeed. The class is hard but if you're signing up for chem, you're already expecting that.
We are the first cohort to take Chemical Herbalism at UVM! We learned the chemistry of herbalism, made plant medicines, and did case studies. The plant journals were such a welcome creative relief. You must have regular access to a kitchen to make the medicines. I loved this course and I would take another class with this prof for sure.
Had to come see what all the fuss was about. I had Amy a few years ago for orgo and am taking her now for chemical herbalism. She has always been well liked and a great teacher. These poor reviews sound like they are coming from one bitter student who probably isn't doing well.
- she is very interseting and engaging - test 3: if you dont have a religon, choose one and start praying - other tests - good, i got 96 on them both - class is understandable if you pay attention and put in the work (lots of work outside class) - TA review sessions had no help to me - textbook saved me
Lectures and expectations are clear. Practice exams are basically the same as the actual test and she posts her notes on brightspace. You have to put in some effort but other than that you can't go wrong with this prof.
None of us know our grades yet but I'm banking on a B+. She lets you swap out your highest exam for your lowest. Practice tests are a huge help. She talks fast but covers everything. You have to go to class even tho she doesn't take attendance bc she gives hints.
great professor! goes into lots of detail and covers content well. very fast paced teaching and exams are difficult, but content isn't too difficult.
Professor Hoeltge was much better when everything was online... now that she has gone back to all in-person exams, buckle up for a challenge. Lectures are not great; they just make everyone more confused, and her exams are much harder than anything covered in lecture or on the practice exams. She is very sweet and kind, though, not bad, not great.
Prof. Hoeltge was incredible! She can move a little fast especially if you haven't taken chem in a while/ever, but she explains things very well and is SUPER helpful in office hours. Attendance wasn't mandatory but I don't see how you could pass without going. She let us bring notes to the last two exams. If you have to take chem TAKE IT WITH HER!
Extremely funny as a person, but her lectures can be incredibly confusing and the exams were super difficult. If you're not willing to study don't take her class. Overall good professor.
Amy is one of the better gen chem professors. She wants everyone to do well and while the material and exams can be difficult it is very doable if you put in the work and if your TA for lab doesn't suck. Lectures were confusing at the start of the year but they improved once she stopped reading off her work and actually did practice problems.
Amy is G R E A T - her lectures are really helpful and she sets you up for success. But this is still a difficult class so make sure you study and practice outside of class.
I really enjoyed this class. It was a nice mix of conceptual and math. Amy was very pleasant and had a great way of making abstract information more relatable by drawing parallels to things we already know in other areas of life. Studying outside of class was expected but it wasn't too bad.
Prof Hoeltge is an amazing professor! Her lectures were always interesting and funny. Our section finished roughly a week before the other sections and we were able to spend the entire last week of classes reviewing for the final exam.
