One of the better ORGO teachers, usually teaches in the off semester...good lecturer, clear notes, nice person.
Excellent teacher, helpful study sessions and guides, teaches in the off semester...by far the best chem teacher I've had.
Howell is a great professor, probably the best i've had at uconn. if you get her as a professor, consider yourself lucky. she makes orgo seem very easy and her tests/quizzes stress everything in lecture, the book and homework in a simple and clear way.
shes a good teacher when the material is easy. once it starts getting difficult she goes fast because she realizes she went to slow on the simple things like naming or spectroscopy. when you go to this lecture you sit and copy notes that she writes out, i didnt use her notes at all, its a lot of self learning with her.

Really clear-cut lectures, if you put in the time you'll get the grade you want. She knows what she's talking about, (and she's not too bad on the eyes either).
Orgo is a weeding out process for med school. She is a great teacher to learn a difficult subject. But it is impossible to curve grades because the class size is so large. Attempt to study all the practice exams and worksheets she provides
I would strongly recommend taking Dr. Smith instead. Everyone does well at first but then when it gets difficult, she decides to rush through the material.
I was lucky to take Orgo with Howell. I dreaded this course, but she made the material understandable and she did a lot for her students. She provided practice tests, review sessions, and extra wrkshts. She writes out notes in class, and her explanations r useful, so going to class is a must. Do all the work provided in order to make an A possible.
Dr. Howell is a great professor. Very helpful in and out of class. She writes the notes in class so attendance is mandatory if you want to do well. Her notes are organized and i still use them for reference. She is not teaching Orgo 2444 this semester and I wish she did! I would definitely recommend her as a teacher!!
Howell is a great instructor. She is very clear when explaining concepts, gives very organized notes, and even keeps the class upbeat with her humor. She holds help sessions all the time, and is more than willing to help you outside of class if you need it. Orgo is tough, but she is making it a very enjoyable experience this semester.
Dr. Howell is an amazing professor. She's well organized and does not rush through the material like some other professors do since she writes out her notes as she lectures. She's also extremely approachable and holds help sessions all the time.
Dr. Howell is an extremely intelligent woman. With that being said, she expects a deep understanding of the material from her students. Though she provides great notes in class, she does not curve or drop the lowest grade like some of the other professors. So, saving your grade at the end with the final is nearly impossible.
While Dr.Howell is easily approachable, her teaching skills are not up to approachable standards. She doesnt explain the material, she just writes her notes, for visual learners this Howells class is not for you as there is no slides no pictures nothing. Not to mention there is no curve or anything at the end of the class.
She is very approachable and will sit down with you if you have any questions. The material gets tough, and towards the end of the semester she speeds though a lot of chapters that need more time explaining. Very organized and to the point. Even though I didn't do too well in the class I still think she is very fair. Best professor ive ever had.
Great professor
She is a great professor. very approachable. I feel like lectures are not mandatory if you can learn the material through the book. she does post up practice exams and study guides for exams and final. she is really fair and does not try to trick you.I think she is great professor. I LOVE HER!!!
She's fantastic. Her class notes are basically the highlights of the book; you won't have to read if you go. She doesn't curve, so if you're reliant on that don't go for it, but she's extremely helpful and friendly. She learns the name and a mini bio about each of her students, which is pretty remarkable with that size lecture.
She appears nice in class and is funny at times, but her exams are very challenging after the second one. She also basically treats you with disrespect if you ask questions in or out of her office. I don't know what to think of her. SHE does give extra credit, though.
She is an amazing professor. Extremely clear. Her lectures are the highlights of everything you need to know. It's not her that makes the class challenging, it's the material. Very willing to meet with her students in and out of class. Take her class.
Great professor! Classes are well structured, and she explains the material well. Her practice exams are similar in format to the actual exam. If you do the assigned homework and worksheets (and understand them), then you should do well. She makes herself available to students out of class. Great lecturer as well. Grades are generally unscaled and uncurved.
Awesome professor! She was very enthusiastic about teaching. Her notes are really organized, easy to follow and supplement the book well. She also offers a lot of extra material to help you do well, and is really accommodating. Exams are straight forward. Do the work and you'll do well!
Professor Howell is the best! Her notes are hand written and highlight the most important details of the topic. You will be fine if just do all the assigned homework problems and the learnsmart problems. You will get an A if u attend class and the worksheet/help sessions.
Best Orgo professor in all of UConn. Tests will be thorough but the material is demonstrated fantastically in lecture. Howell cares greatly for students who work hard and will go the extra mile to help you. Attendance is a must to pass this course. Only complaint is that she doesn't teach orgo 2.
Literally the best professor in all of UConn. I only wish she taught the second half of the course. She genuinely cares about her students and is always willing to help them out even after they leave her class. After leaving the class I felt as though I understood the fundamentals of organic chemistry and was set up to do great in CHEM2444.
She is the best professor at UConn by far. She is so clear, so helpful and actually pretty funny! She is always willing to help and gives a lot of extra credit (up to 16 points on your lowest test). TAKE HER CLASS
Amazing Teacher, her tests are tough but if you put the work in you will do fine.
She knows what she's talking about. However, she spends a lot of time in the semester on the easy things and then FLIES through the hard reactions. I did not understand a lot of things and even with help got a bad grade in the course. She has a great personality though and is very helpdful to those who ask for it.
Amazing professor. Uses clicker questions, so you need to go to class. Gives 6 extra credit quizzes that can add 16 points to your lowest exam. Third and fourth exams are much harder than the first two, so don't mess up early in the class. Gives you two hours for exams, which is very helpful. Exams are quite long though. Does not teach CHEM 2444 :(
Prof Howell is fair but she moves too quickly through the material. She is a strict professor so don't expect any leniency.
Howell DOES NOT CURVE. Let me start with that. If you get below a 70 on an exam, she will think you are incompetent. She does give extra credit with having quizzes out of 4 points and the top 4 quiz grades are added to your lowest exam grade. She writes out her notes, which is helpful and uses clicker questions. DO THE HOMEWORK!
Refuses to curve, even when half the class failed their first midterm. Her exams are hard, seem to come out of nowhere, and are based on the homework and/or obscure things she'll briefly mention in lecture. She tries to be helpful by holding review days, but usually she'll just blast through the problems with no explanation. Very frustrating!
Hands down, the hardest class I have ever taken. There is also no curve. She expects a lot and makes the class unnecessarily difficult. HOWEVER, I have never learned so much in a class. If you want one of the best professors at UCONN, take her. If you care what's on your transcript at the end and chem doesn't come naturally , find someone else!!
The class is as hard as you'd expect it but Prof. Howell does her best to present the material in the clearest possible manner. The exams can be tricky and there isnt a curve, but its doable. She is easily accessible outside of class and genuinely cares about her students. Put in the time, study all her lectures thoroughly, and you'll be fine.
Take orgo with her and you won't regret it. If you go to class, do the assigned readings, and the extra practice problems you will be fine.
While not the best professor, she's the best organic chemistry teacher at UConn so it's best to take it with her. Sometimes her lectures are confusing but I'm not sure I can really blame her considering the difficult content of her class. She definitely cares for her students. The class is really test heavy so make sure you keep up the best you can
She gives four question exams and refuses to post the notes online. You do a lot of reading and the only boost you get is are the extra credit quizzes. Beware. I really don't enjoy this class.
Average for the class is normally a C+. Professor Howell is a great person, but unless you have the time to really devote to reading the textbook and doing the homework assignments you won't do well.
Yearly average for this class is normally a C+. Professor Howell is a great person, but unless you have the time to really devote to reading the textbook and doing the homework assignments you won't do well. Also iClicker grade is worth 6% of your grade so it's worth showing up to lecture.
Course is based off of 4 exams which is graded very harshly, she gives minimum partial credit. She does not post notes and does clicker questions which are worth a lot. The only opportunity she gives to make up extra points is through your best 4 quizzes (can get up to 16 extra credit points) which is rather hard to achieve. Must read textbook
Amy was great. Read the textbook and remember the basics of the different reactions and you'll be fine. I skipped class about once a week, read the textbook and answered practice problems for two days before the exams and did well. She is always available for outside help and answers emails very quickly. TAKE HER FOR ORGO 2
She is one of the best teachers I've had, period. Dr. Howell is committed to student success and learning. Her teaching style is well organized and lectures are interesting. Easily accessible via email and office hours. Her tests are a fair assessment of how well you studied the material, follow her recommendations and do the practice exam.
She's a nice person and a decent teacher at best but her class is literally impossible to pass if you don't already know the material. Her exams are literally the worst thing I've ever encountered in my life. I did every single problem assigned 3 times and studied for hours yet I still couldn't get above a 71 on any of them. Please save yourself.
Dr. Howell was a great professor- caring, accessible, and hand-wrote her notes and explained them well! However, orgo is HARD. Make sure you stay on top of the material and do all of the homework problems. It's a tough class and you need to put in a lot of work to do well.
Took her orgo 1 class during the summer after doing pretty poorly in another orgo 1 class. I would definitely recommend taking her for orgo 1 since she does a great job explaining concepts during class and is highly accessible in and out of class (she will take the time to answer all your questions!) I'm definitely looking forward to orgo 2!
I never understood anything that came out of her mouth. READ THE TEXTBOOK so helpful, but even then it was hard sometimes to grasp her point. She doesn't speak very coherently and it's like she's trying to make multiple points into one and it really doesn't work. I know orgo is hard but she makes it unnecessarily difficult.
Amy Howell was an amazing professor. She hand-wrote her notes, explained concepts well, cared about her students, and was very accessible outside of class. Exams were very fair, and based off of the homework, worksheets, and practice exams. As long as you put in effort and stay on top of assignments you will be ok. Solid choice for orgo.
She is so gifted at teaching Orgo and if you go to lecture and copy her notes to study from, you will do fine. Do the optional textbook practice problems, she takes test questions from there. She is like that sweet fun grandma, but super smart. She cares so much about students and is so helpful. Read the textbook, don't fall behind, use flashcards
She's an amazing lecturer. She actually replies to emails and really seems to care about her students. This is genuinely the hardest class I've ever taken and it literally made me drop pre-med but I loved her.
She was an amazing professor for Orgo 1 and I really wish I took her for Orgo 2. She is so organized and writes her notes along with you in lecture so you have plenty of time to write everything down. Exam are very straightforward and are exactly like the practice exams. SHE'S THE BEST ORGO PROFESSOR
If you do well on the practice tests you will do well on the actual tests. She writes out notes during lectures, lots of example problems. Overall a great teacher. Worksheet sessions super helpful. Easy to reach. Best Orgo professor if you have the chance 100% take it with her.
The prof herself isn't bad but when she grades she does not CURVE at all! she has exams only and just a few worksheets (in class) but no HW. I believe hard classes should give out hw so a student like me can get good grade. The class is tough itself but at some points she didn explain well. kind of like learning urself. I didn like her but ohwell!
Dr. Howell is a great prof. she is very available for questions and presents the material clearly. Practice exams, homework problems, and worksheet sessions are the most useful for studying. This class was not difficult provided you put in a moderate constant effort and did work on time.
The best professor I have ever had. She cares about ALL of her students and will answer questions inside/outside of class. She created a classwide group chat that she was in to easily answer all questions. Quizzes are easy as long as you complete the homeworks/study. The exams are the pract. exams but a little different. Take this course with her!
My favorite course at Uconn because Dr. Howell made orgo fun. She only tests on material she has covered in lectures. If you study/understand the HW and worksheets you will never be blindsided on the exams. Attending office hours is so helpful, she is very kind and genuinely wants her students to succeed. Overall an enjoyable and memorable class!
I liked Dr. Howell as a person but as a professor I struggled to appreciate how this class was run. I did really well in Orgo 1 and found this class immensely difficult for no reason. Exams felt ridiculously specific and unfair, quizzes were based on the homework but 80% of the grade is exams so it did not help me at all. Overall, not a great time.
I thought this would be my hardest class going into the semester, but Dr. Howell made it much easier for me to understand such a hard topic. Very nice, explains things clearly, and genuinely cares for her students to do well. You still have to work to do well, but she truly sets everyone up for success. Take a class with her whenever possible!
Dr. Howell was by far the best professor that I've had at UCONN. As long as you do ALL the homework and review your class notes, you will get an A. Office hours are super helpful and will give you an advantage when it comes to doing well on exams. Also, be sure to rewrite class examples out, it helps.
Dr. Howell was an amazing Orgo professor. As difficult as the class was, she was extremely kind, caring, and fair. You have to study a lot, as with any Orgo class, but all of the exams and quizzes will be things youve seen before, just in different manners. Definitely take orgo with her!
Dr. Howell is one of my favorite professors--she is very understanding and wants the best for her students. As long as you complete the homework and truly understand the class examples, you WILL get an A. She will never give you anything on an exam that you haven't seen before. Attend office hours if you can, definitely gave me a leg-up.
Dr. Howell is AMAZING! She doesn't try to trick you on exams and she understands that orgo is a tough subject. She offers a lot of opportunities to get extra help so make sure to take advantage of everything she offers, especially the WS sessions. Your grade is mostly based on tests but if you study the concepts she says to study they're not bad.
Professor Howell was absolutely amazing! She is extremely caring and compassionate, as well as easily accessible and approachable. Take advantage of extra credit opportunities and attend lectures since participation is a good part of your grade. Her lectures were clear to follow, and her approach to organic chemistry made it easy to understand it.
I really liked Amy as a person but it didn't seem like she cared when some people weren't doing well. I understand this is college and professors can't hold our hand through everything but I wasn't a fan of her teaching style. It felt more like a writing class than an orgo class.
The tests and final make up the majority of your grade. Dr. Howell wants everyone to do as well as they can and has office hours/worksheet sessions to help students. Going to enough worksheet sessions can give you extra credit. Do the homework if you want to do well - it's what the quizzes are based on.
Professor Howell, doesn't care about her students. She makes the exams extremely hard and she is very useless in her office hours. I honestly didn't learn anything from her lectures. I had to go to other organic chemistry professors for help instead. Which is unacceptable.
Organic Chemistry is one of the hardest classes any STEM major can take. Amy's class consists of four exams and a final, with there being credit from participation and 'worksheet sessions'. She teaches through drawing reactions. Like in any orgo class, you must work hard for an A. Only wish for this hard class was to include more extra credit.
Howell is a good professor but you have to put in a ton of work. For orgo do the homework and go to worksheet sessions (you get EC). She also offers exam review sessions. Quiz are HW based and exams are similar to worksheet questions. I had to watch YT lectures to keep up (check out Orgo chem tutor). Office hours help but its a high effort class.
Dr. Howell definitely cares about students that try, but managing Orgo 2 was just incredibly difficult for me. With the course load I had this semester I did the HW infrequently and this is likely why I did poorly. Worksheet sessions were helpful and can boost your overall average by 2%. Tests are 60% of the grade and the final is 20%.
Dr. Howell was extremely caring to her students. She tried to make the material as easy as possible. Definitely take advantage of the Worksheet sessions and office hours if needed.
Amazing professor. She is very, very accessible outside of class and is willing to help her students. She does her lectures with plain paper and a projector, which is really helpful for visualizing drawings. She only teaches off-sequence orgo classes so I'm glad I took them off-sequence.
It is a tough class and I will have to retake it, but have no significant complaints about Dr. Howell. Worksheet sessions weekly for extra credit. Exams are hard but fair. Cares about the students and will meet one on one, but you will be leading the conversation. Wish we did more problems together in class and weren't rushed for time.
Great professor, very kind. Willing to help students and explain materials clearly. Students sometimes complain that the course is a bit hard, but you should do fine once you understand that all reactions in each unit are under a similar mechanism. Personally, I think Orgo II is more straightforward than Orgo I.
the goat
Professor Howell is the greatest professor I have ever had, while Orgo is a difficult subject she makes it very easy to digest and understand. She has office hours and undergraduate peer mentors for extra help. She is the best Orgo professor by far, even if you have to take it off sequence, take it with her, and you will not regret it.
Very kind and caring person. She taught well, but you really need to do the homework and read the textbook to fully understand everything. Quizzes are literally the homework problems and there are practice exams plus many extra tutoring hours. This class is not hard at all, just a lot of work. Her exams are just so hard and I messed up, got a B
Dr. Howell is the best organic chemistry professor. Orgo. is a really hard course but she is always there to help you. She has office hours that you can stop by, extra credits, and student mentors office hours to help you as well. Her quizzes are the exact questions that she post for homework. Highly recommended taking it out of sequence with her!!
Yes, Dr. Howell allows numerous extra help opportunities and openly says she wants to help her students, but the minute you meet with her, you realize it is all an act. She is very condescending, she would rather you drop the course without actually helping a student. Her Exams are totally unfair, I will not be taking the second sequence with her.
Love this woman. Do what she recommends and you'll do great, meaning: do ALL the homework even tho it's not graded, go to ALL the worksheet (extra cred) sessions. Handwrite your notes; she handwrites during lectures so you can follow at her pace. I mean it, keep up with the homework, it's the only way to learn this stuff!
If you are taking orgo on the off sequence, TAKE DR HOWELL. I had to retake Orgo 1 with her and she explains orgo by writing it out and demonstrating, which is way better than many other professors here. She offers many different opportunities to receive extra credit, such as in class exercises and optional discussion sections.
2nd semester with her. Orgo 2 is easier IMO, but honestly I do not like her teaching style of hand writing everything, however, lots of people did. Her exams are hard, so put in the work (do the HW) and go to peer tutor hours when you need help, then you won't be upset with your grade and wont have to blame her.
Amazing professor. Offers lots of opportunities outside of the class like the worksheet sessions to earn extra credit. Very easy to talk to and detailed with her lecture. Orgo 2 is hard in general, but taking it with her made it manageable. Our TAs were amazing, shout out to Brandon and Grace for holding exam review sessions!
Dr. Howell is absolutely amazing and I would suggest taking Organic Chemistry with her over anyone else. She is very accessible outside of class, offers extra credit, and has many study/worksheet sessions to help prepare for exams. The homework is not mandatory, but I HIGHLY suggest doing it. Overall a wonderful professor who wants you to learn.
You def have to work for your grade in the class but its doable. She handwrites the notes in lecture so its easy to keep up and she is quick to respond to emails and slack. she is a tough grader but if you go to her office hours and peer tutoring its so worth it! she offers extra credit and the hw is optional but i highly recommend doing it
The fact that she handwrites her lectures makes the class significantly more approachable compared to other professors teaching Orgo. Attend class, go to ALL extra credit sessions and the class should be easily manageable.
Prof Howell made the material easy to understand and had several opportunities for extra help. She handwrites all the lecture notes, so the pace is easy to keep up. I did none of the readings, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to do the optional homework problems. For the exams, just grind practice problems and you'll do fine.
