Amy is amazing! She is truly the reason that I want to work in the fitness industry. Being an ESS minor, Amy has helped me to find my true passion for fitness and to find direction in my career path. I would recommend taking any of her classes! She's great!
I went to class every time, ran everything she asked me too, and got a NP. Total bullsh*t! I tried contacting her about the grade but she never got back to me and now the grade is permanent because I already graduated. Do not take this class, she is really unprofessional and you are better off running on the beach...
If you are taking ESS 3, it is completely unnecessary to go to class although she says it is mandatory. All assignments are posted on GauchoSpace and are graded on completion. Read the textbook through once and you'll be golden for the midterm and final. Super easy and pretty impossible to fail.
Dont read the book, just go to lecture and try to take notes as fast as humanely possible, she goes WAY too fast to even let you digest what shes saying. But assignments are easy and tests are a regurgitation of lecture. Easy material. Shes not helpful though so dont expect her to help.
Easiest A I've ever gotten. Go to class and pay half attention and she will give you the answers to the midterm and final. She is really enthusiastic about the material and she lives a healthy lifestyle so it's not hypocritical. Take this class if you want an A without any effort involved.
Easy A, just do all your assignments and fill out the study guides. If you go to all the lectures and pay attention then the midterm and final will be a breeze.
As other students said, Amy Jamieson shares a passion for her subject. However, her lectures go by so quickly that you can barely comprehend what she's saying because when you're writing a slide down she's already on the next topic. Be prepared to type or write your heart out Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM.
The lectures are very long, and I never took notes, and got a B at least in class. You must attend every lecture (iClicker points are worth way too much for some reason). Take notes, do the study guides, maybe read (I kinda read half the chapters), and you'll do great on the exams. Homework are REALLY short (less than 15 mins) barely gave any too.
Lectures are very long and dry and you wont stop writing notes until the hour and fifteen minutes is up. I thought her lectures moved way too fast at times and she rushed through as many slides as she could although most of the information was repetitive. As long as you know everything on the study guide, you should do very well on the tests.
She is an average lecturer, but you are more focused on what is on the slides than what she says. She also goes really fast so you're left with incomplete notes. I didn't use the book until studying for the midterm and the final. The homework assignments are super easy and serve to give you points so do them.
easy class, lecture is not mandatory but helps because there is a lot of content. and the test questions are purely from lecture. an A is totally accessible if you actually study and do the readings. no section, just midterm and final
Easiest class ever. Only reason to go to lecture is to get the iclicker points. Her lectures are literally plagiarized from the textbook so you really don't need the book at all, waste of $80+ dollars. Memorize the study guides and you will get and A. Overall, really pointless class as it does not count for anything requirements.
Last quarter I took ESS 3 with Jamieson and absolutely despised how fast she went. I hoped this class would be different in terms of speed, but it was about the same. Just be prepared to type, write, or take photos fast of slides. 1 midterm, 1 group presentation with "research paper" about a chosen topic, and no final during finals week!!!!
Lectures are straight from the book so I didn't even bother buying the book. Super easy assignments that you get credit for as long as you do them. Requires iclicker for lectures, but she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities to make up for missing iclicker points. Midterm and final were straight forward.
Jamieson's a joke. She referred to Alaska as Hawaii for an entire lecture, reads off the slides which she copy and pastes from the textbook, and pulls her exams off of that. Easy, but painful if you have any sense of academic desire.
I don't know how this woman is qualified to teach this course in a university setting. I'm an undergraduate biology major and I could teach this class better than her. She mispronounces everything & on several occasions I've heard hear make statements that were just blatantly incorrect. No need to do the reading, she tests directly from lectures.
I'm still taking her class right now and it's pretty easy. For this quarter, she started to post her powerpoint notes (chapters 4+) online so I just print them out and write down what I'm missing in class. It's true that she goes fast at times but I just take pictures and then write them down later. Class feels long though, so be prepared for that.
Long lectures filled with information. Take good notes and do your best to pay attention and you will likely attain an A, at worst a B. The material is straightforward and any difficulty comes from the fact that there is sometimes a lot to memorize. You can get by without the book if you don't miss lecture.
Please don't take this class if you have any desire to actually learn about nutrition or be even remotely inspired. She bores me to tears. Unless you already know all about nutrition and can skip the painful lectures, do yourself a favor a take a diff. class. I feel like she really has no passion for teaching but she is fit, I'll give her that.
I do not understand how she goes through the slides and talks so quickly. She can easily have 300 words on her slides but spend less than 10 seconds on them. Yet she talks for the entire hour and 15 minutes. She goes way too fast. Overall the class isn't that hard but her lectures are long and painful.
Easy class; Easy A, Go to lecture OR read the book (she does use Clicker so its easier to go to class and take notes than read, plus she tells you what is important for her test, book doesn't) if you attend all lectures & do HW you will get an A. I actually turned in 2 of 4 HW assignments nearly a week late, skipped lecture for 3 weeks, & got a B.
A lot to memorize before midterm and final, even though they are all multiple choices. Lots of extra credit. I got an A even though I got 80 on my final. You don't need a textbook because she put everything on ppt.
This was a pretty easy class. She tests off of her lecture notes only so don't bother buying the textbook and doing the reading because it's the same exact thing as her notes. She uses iClickers so show up to lecture to get the points. Jamieson gives extra credit so not impossible to get an A+.
took this class freshman year first quarter since other classes were full. i don't regret it. although lectures can seem to drag a bit (esp since it's in IV) it definitely helps to be there. you're gonna want to get all the iclicker points. BRING YOUR LAPTOP (way easier for notes). it's really hard not to get an A in this class. tests are fair.
She rushed through unnecessary material (repeating info/slides, info not on tests, etc) to get to the important info at the very 5 mins of the last lecture.. Pretty much sums up her teaching style. Doesn't prepare her lectures and doesn't know what slide comes after what. Easy points for clicker and hw, but don't expect much else. Take for p/np
Super awesome professor who really cares about her students. The information can get pretty scientific at times, but she knows how to break it down so you understand. iClicker points are worth a large portion of your grade, so going to class is a must. If you're looking for an awesome class to take your last quarter, I highly recommend it!
I took this class pass/no pass and because I didn't do ONE homework assignment I didn't pass the class. On the syllabus it said if you tried to do the homework late you had five days to complete it, I asked if I could do it the day after and she told me no.
One of the easiest and more enjoyable A+ I received for a class. Studied the night before for the midterm and final, finished the exams relatively quick, and still did decent. Due to the questions being very straight forward and the answer is so obvious it hurts. Would retake again, I browses the internet during lecture.
Very straight forward, easy A, Study the Study Guide and get an A. Take it, very easy
Very straightforward. Either read the textbook or go to class. Both are completely unnecessary, as the lectures are straight from the book. There is iClicker but I just gave mine to friends every class, read the book, got an A+. Her lectures are clear and precise.
Take this class if you want an easy A. The lectures can be pretty heavy, but the tests are straight forward and she uses her iclicker questions on the test. She also gives you a study guide that is somewhat helpful. Minimal work required for the class!
Easiest class I've taken at UCSB. The test grades really don't effect your grade much (I got a 74 on the midterm and 70 on final and ended with a 93). Even if you miss some of the assignments, before the final she gives you the opportunity to make all of them up for full credit. Really have to try to not get an A.
Her lectures are super heavy but she pulls info straight from the book so if you read the book you could get away with not going to lecture but she does take attendance by iclicker points. Homework every week but I never spent more than 20 min on it a week. Studied for the midterm the night before and got an 88%. Easy A if you pay attention.
This is one of the stupidest and easiest classes you can take at UCSB. There is weekly homework, but it takes about 15 minutes and, if you do it, you get 100% points. You have to show up to the lectures for the clicker points. Your final and midterm are worth about 25% each of your grade, I got a C on both and got a 94% in the class. Easy A.
I got a C on the midterm and a C on the final and ended the class with an A- because of extra credit. She's nice enough, but I hate health/ science so lectures were boring. The book is exactly what she says so if you don't pay attention in class you can just read the book. Or if you pay attention in class you don't need to read the book. EASY hw!
The lectures can be heavy and sometimes boring but show up because attendance is a large percent of the grade. She doesn't post the slides online they are straight from the book so don't bother taking a lot of notes(she talks faaast). Homeworks are easy and the tests straightforward.
This class is an easy A. If you show up and pay attention in lecture, you won't even need the book. The lectures are kind of boring and dry, but you get points for showing up. The homework is short and easy; you get 100% if you finish it. The whole class was pretty straightforward overall. Not too exciting, but not horrible. Meh.
Some lectures were a bit dry but that's just because I don't enjoy health biology. The homework is a third of your grade and it's super easy to get full credit. There are also some EC opportunities. The midterm and final combined are half of your grade, but if you have more than full credit for the rest of the course then you don't have to do well.
Super easy class, no section and barely any homework. Average test grades are low but as long as you do iclicker, homework, and extra credit, super easy A. I barely listened in lecture and it was still super easy, and the information is actually pretty interesting. She give you lots of unnecessary info, weed out what you need.
Easy A. Show up to lectures, take notes, and do all of the homework on time and youll do fine. Midterm and Final are not a surprise at all and they arnt the entire chunk of your grade so make sure to do all of the homework. I got a B- on both the final and midterm and ended the class with a 97%!
Amy made it sound like this class is an easy A. Do NOT listen to anyone that says this. She tests you on several things that she does not put on the study guide. Review your notes as this class seems like cake, but by week 4 it gets confusing. Show up to class every day, iClicker points are a must. Extra credit will save you.
Amy is a nice lady. She is helpful if you ask her questions in office hours. Weekly assignments are not bad as they take about 45 min-1 hr to do. She goes fast in lectures, so you're better off taking pictures of the notes than writing notes. I told her she was going too fast and she still zoomed through everything. An A is doable.
I took this class just to get the 3 units and that was a mistake. You have to attend every lecture and there are time consuming assignments that I didn't see the purpose of. Email correspondence with this professor can be difficult, she does not reply for a very long time if at all. Many 4 unit classes I've taken have been easier than this.
The lectures are very dry/ boring and she does iclickers, so you can't miss class. The tests are ridiculous because they don't correspond with the study guide or the reading. The only thing that saved my grade were all the homework assignments and extra credit. I got C's on both exams and ended up with an A- in the class.
Her slides are straight from the book and she goes through the information way too fast. Final and midterm are confusing and have information that was never discussed (failed both). Weekly assignments, iclickr points, and extra credit saved my grade. (if you just need credits there are easier classes)
Super easy. Lectures were dumb, I just did other homework. Everything seemed like common sense.
This class is mind-blowingly easy. The only two important factors in this class are clicker points and homework. You can literally fail both the midterm and final and as long as you do the homework on time and get your clicker points you'll get an A. She does give extra credit as well.
Professor Jamieson is extremely caring and she genuinely wants students to understand the material and apply the knowledge to daily life. It's really easy to get an A as long as you do the homework and go to class. Definitely recommend ESS 3!
This class is so easy. i-clickers make up a majority of the grade, and she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I got a D+ on the midterm and C on the final and I still got an A-. Beware, tests are relatively hard so make sure you go to class and get those i-clicker points.
super easy class
Most of your grade is Iclicker and homework. Homework takes about 5 min. Class in general is super easy fairly basic nutrition stuff along side some basic biology. Tests were extremely easy and were based on memorization. Basically free units if you read the textbook and somewhat pay attention to the HW.
She's a wonderful lecturer, passionate about her subject and her students learning. The class is super easy if you pay attention in class. The tests are based on lecture. Book is online. I didn't read it because the assignments connected to it are easy and can usually be taken multiple times. The final is noncumulative. Super fun and learned a lot
This isn't a good class if you're into learning something. Half of the questions on the tests were like how many mg of __ is the recommended daily value? I don't remember a single value looking back on it now. Sure it's an easy class, but you are really just wasting your time. It doesn't count towards any requirements so just pick a different class
She was pretty awesome. I learned a lot . The class was not difficult at all. There are iclickers every lecture, and sometimes the lectures feel really long. Overall, easy class. Easy assignments and exams. If you take good notes, and review your notes before the exams you will be fine.
She's not knowledgable at all she reads off power points and goes through everything too fast. Majority of the information in her slides is random unimportant stuff, a headache to memorize. You won't learn anything in this class. There is bunch of great questions to ask on the exam and she'll ask the most unimportant random question.
Amy's done this a million times so she's very well spoken & specific on what matters. Graded by weekly quizzes, a handful of diet analyses, and the midterm/final which are scantrons. iClickers are used. Online txtbook is $70 or so. Be ready for mandatory attendance & paying attention. Don't recommend unless you care about nutrition (can be dry).
Easy class, kind of a lot of memorization but not bad. Jamieson is super enthusiastic and sweet, and there wasn't much homework. Class could be a bit boring but the info is useful and I like the professor so would recommend.
Her lectures are a bit unorganized but she covers almost all the exam contents, so it's fine. but it's still better to read the book if you really wanna learn about nutrition. she gives out study guides before exams, if you follow the study guide, it's really easy to pass.
EZ class, show up, take notes, do iclickers, spend 1 hour each week doing homework, only study b4 exam nights, easy A.
Very caring and passionate even during remote instruction. Study a little for the quizzes and youre set.
this would be considered a good class to take if professor Jamieson was not teaching it. Given we are in the middle of a pandemic, and our classes are enclosed to merely 6 weeks, the workload was quite excessive. Let's try to be understanding toward student's circumstances during these times.
Jamieson is pretty decent! Her class was completely ASYNC this year and she still managed to make sure directions to do well in the class were clear. The lectures were a bit long and heavy, though
Amy is super understanding, especially during the pandemic. Her class mainly consists of doing discussions, assignments, quizzes, and small research on fast food items. There is a midterm and final that uses proctorio, but she allows you to use one sheet of notes. Don't take advantage of her niceness and don't skip over readings, they're useful.
Jamieson was fine, although her lectures were pretty boring but usually not dreadfully long. There is a ton of information you basically have to memorize with this course, but most of what was on the exams she covered in her lectures so just skimming the textbook should be fine. Not a super exciting class but not super hard to get an A.
I took this class during fall 2020 and it was easy. All you have to do is stay on top of textbook readings and complete the busy work assignments. The lectures are super short, but surprisingly informative. I'd recommend this class.
This might be a biased post because I love nutrition already but this class was really fun and informative. She's a kind lady herself and will help you with any concept in office hours. Midterm and Final questions come straight from the lectures so take good notes. Her lectures are short and to the point so it's not dreadful. Take her!
Prof Jamieson is one of the best teachers I have had so far. I loved this class and learned so much I am definitely taking another one of her classes. She mainly focuses on easy to digest lectures and the textbook is supplemental but helpful. I felt well prepared for the midterm and final. Weekly discussions and check your understanding quizzes.
Lots of virtual textbook reading that is hard to digest and a lot of outside-of-class work for a 3 unit class. Lots of homework as well. My 4 and 5 unit classes have much less work - ESS does not even fill any GE's as well...
it has a heavier workload than my 5 units courses. don't take it. prof and TAs never reply emails.
ridiculous prof... she changed the syllabus after the final result came out.
I didn't take the course but my girlfriend did. She got A- because the grade was not rounded. So I come here to rate the professor for her. The workload is not that fair for a 3 credit course. Every weekend I could see my girl working hard for it.
Lectures are the most important.
I didn't mind this class, there was a lot of work, but it was manageable and does not take very long to complete each week compared to other classes. She's a sweet lady and you can tell she enjoys teaching the class. I would recommend it if you enjoy the subject, although it does not fill any requirements.
This class is VERY hard for a 3 unit, lower division class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU REALLY LIKE NUTRITION. There was so much reading and so many little random assignments, as well as an excessive amount of lectures. You also have to buy a $100 online course thing to even take the class after paying for the class itself so thats whack.
This class just has so much homework its hard to even keep track of it all. I felt like I was in high school with the amount of busy work. None of it is very hard but its time consuming for only being a 3 credit course. Not my fav.
3 unit class but took more time than all 3 of my 4 unit classes combined. 25 question quizzes each week. Half of the quiz questions had multiple questions within each question (matching, fill in the blank). The quizzes took me at least an hour to complete each time. Way too much content in this class. She doesn't answer questions in email.
Easiest class I have ever taken at ucsb, she's really passionate about what she teaches and her lectures always kept me awake because they were actually interesting. Only one lecture a week and the rest is online. The only thing I didn't like was that you had to buy an $80 online book to do the homework quizzes but other than that amazing class
There are many words on all the slides and the exact lectures are posted online anyway making it very easy to skip the actual class. Midterms and final are online and open note. It is an easy class but does not fulfill anything and is time consuming because there are weekly assignments.
If you think it's okay for anyone to pay 80 bucks for mcgraw hill for a HEALTH class take this course. It's not even a required class to take, that's not worth it at all... and for all these review I am seeing means it's not a great class either. If you make students pay for an online course you have no heart.
80 bucks for a class. Lazy professor, as seen from her lack awful curriculum. Hardly replies to emails. Pretty hypocritical that she puts in 0 effort into teaching but expects it from her students by assigning unnecessary assignments. Doesn't realize that no one takes her class seriously. 0/5 stars
Professor Jamieson is super passionate about what she teaches. Always enthusiastic and helpful. The material in this course is straightforward and the exams don't hurt your grade too much if you do badly, as long as you complete other work. Some busy work but easy to understand and pass! Would take this course again.
Professor Jamieson is very nice, definitely passionate about what she teaches. Only one lecture per week despite GOLD showed two. Grade was based on two to three homework assignments per week, a midterm and a final (both online), and iclicker. Super easy to get 100% as long as you complete everything with decent quality.
It was not hard to do well in this class you just have to be ready and willing to participate and put effort in.
Very easy asynchronous course, mostly online except for one lecture. Very clear on what is expected from your assignments. Enjoyed taking the course because she was passionate about the material, just a lot of reading, which is perfect to follow along on quizzes, exams, etc. Great personality and a very cheerful professor! Would recommend taking!
Very easy. A few assignments a week. All work and tests online. She was jacked AF. Lowkey didn't go to lectures and didn't read anything and it was still an easy A.
Although GOLD says this is a hybrid course, you truly meet only once a week. Out of the 10 weeks of lecture you have 1 excused absence. She takes attendance through iClicker, and doesn't care if the answers are wrong. Show up to class and do the minimal weekly work (got 100% on every assignment) and you will get an easy A. She doesn't answer emails
the class itself is incredibly easy but she is completely unresponsive to emails
I took ESSW3 as a summer online course and it was easy, but a lot of busy work with at least 3-4 assignments every week + a pop quiz, she would open up two to three modules a week meaning there was about 9 assignments at time and 3 quizzes. Final & midterm are multiple choice and true/false. Overall easy class but she doesn't respond to emails.
Very easy class, I also took her for the Sports Injuries class. However, she does not respond to emails and the course is low quality. She expects you to pay 80 dollars for the learning management textbook system and basically that teaches you everything instead. Lectures are dry.
she does not respond to emails and she put my final grade in gold wrong and took down the canvas course so we no longer had access. i had to go to the dean and the department. my grade was fixed by someone (i dont know who) but she never responded to my emails and was not in her office or accessible at all. very unprofessional.
