Very nice, teaches very well
Professor Karofsky is a brilliant brilliant philosophy professor! She adds so much insight into the reading material that it brings the work to life. She's great.
What a nasty teacher. We went head to head all semester because I kept bringing up religon to prove her wrong and she didnt like it. Accused me of plagiarism and said she would change my grade after I proved her wrong. She still gave me a miserable mark.
i guess she is ok if you agree with all and everything that she says. if she doesnt agree with your point of view or with whatever you have to say you will not do so well. lesson...you can not have your own ideas in her class
she is a great philosphy teacher mainly because she makes the boring material easier to handle. she is a tough grader, but i really learned a lot in her class.
well if u like opinionated professors who are tough graders then you'll like her
I enjoyed this class... it is an easy B, but if you work hard you can pull an A. She allows you to submit your papers early and gives you comments on how to make it better. You'll learn a lot, and may walk out with views you never thought you would have
A good professor. Can be a tough grader on written work, but her tests aren't bad. Her class discussions are interesting and, though she is opinionated, she does a great job backing up her opinions with evidence and is clearly smart.
she can come across as deeply trying to inflame her critics, it is a succesful way to engage students... class notes and papers are very straightfoward, take good notes and pay attention, talk...she is very willing to clarify any doubts or questions..
I enjoyed her class she's Highly opiniated, but supports with a ton of evidence, and she's always willing to listen, and prove wrong :p, any arguments. Work for HUHC was easy, an essay now and then, but mostly just discussion, midterm wasn't anything new
Sure she's opinionated, she's a philosophy professor :P Good teacher, encourages discussion above all else. Fair grader on the tests and give you the opportunity to hand in rought drafts for writing assignments.
Makes info very clear for students and presents in an interesting way. Engages us. Is a tough grader on tests and essays especially. Reasonable though. Takes points into consideration.
Awsome person! Best course i ever took during my whole college years. I can honestly say this class changed my life!!!
Great professor. A little hard. Lots of discussion.
She is the best I love her and her class is very good. Take her as much as possible.
Professor is very un-objective on her teachings. Constantly throws in left-wing rhetoric into her class lessons. Does teach Philosophy well, just don't like her one-sided point of view. Challenge her point of view and it's in one ear and out the other. Not much different from other Hofstra prof's
The class is really interesting. She teaches you things you never would have thought about. The topics can get detailed so therefore be hard to understand and she makes you write a few papers and is very specific about what she wants otherwise she has no problem failing your papers.

Nice and easy
so annoying, you WILL fall asleep in her class... she is really unhelpful with the papers.. everyone just gets up and walks out in the middle... ridiculous
She is the best Professor I have had here at Hofstra- knows the subject thoroughly and makes you feel comfortable when participating in class discussions. Your head will be spinning when leaving class, she makes you think. If you come to class, you will do good in the course. Although she holds different beliefs, she will not impose them on you.
the best teacher ever! she is so great and easy, the class is just fun comversation about life, she's young so she can relate to students point of view, doesn't take atrendence or care if you leave early/come late, i went to seriously very few classes and still got an A in the class, as long as you know your stuff shes cool
Excellent teacher, just read the text and you'll be fine. Tests and papers are easy if you come to class and pay attention. She's one of the best professors i've had at Hofstra.
This class is incredible. Awesome professor, and a cogent lecturer.
This class is sooo boring. It puts me to sleep everytime. I have no clue what is going on in the class. She speaks so fast and I don't feel that she makes everything clear. I am so confused with this class and am not doing well on the papers or exams. Hard concept to grasp. Don't take this course!!
This class was by far the best course that I have taken here at Hofstra! The class was so incredibly interesting and Professor K was amazing! She really cares about all of her students and will help you with everything. Also, you sit back and watch movies all class and talk about them. If you have extra credits to take DEFINITELY take this class!!
HORRIBLE. blabs about bagels and whatnot, cannot clearly define even one term. stay away.
Toughhhhh grader on paper evand a die hard necessatarian ...so if u agree w contingency come w evidence to back your views
Prof K is awesome! Prof K is a genuinely kind, caring, and sweet person who goes above and beyond for her students. She is also a great professor; she will really work with you on your writing and she makes class genuinely fun and interesting. I took Prof K 3 times and each time I was surprised how much I got out of the course. Take her!!!!!!!!!
She's a great prof, and plays devil's advocate really well. She prefers to have class be a discussion instead of a lecture, and this can make class tedious or slow sometimes if people won't move on. She comments heavily on papers in an attempt to improve your work. She's probably the best Phil prof you can take.
She is a genuinely nice person and really wants her students to do well. You can send her as many drafts as you want for papers. If you do the work, then you should be able to do well in her class.
Very nice and VERY helpful when it comes to papers. But the lectures were not interesting, they almost put me to sleep. Participation is really important and will boost your grade. Also, don't let her scare you with the exams: reading the textbook is unnecessary but you DO need to study your notes if you want an A.
Prof K is great. Loved her. The lectures are long, but she lets you get involved and fight/debate with other students on the issues raised in class If you don't like thinking don't take it. The book is referred to but if you take her notes on the board and listen, you don't really need the book. I would def recommend her for your philosophy class.
I took the class on accident and it was the best mistake I could make. She was very helpful on the papers and let me write unlimited ruff drafts before handing in.... Very interesting if you talk to her and very nice. Text book is pointless and tests are easy but STUDY THE NOTES. Take the class put a little in and you will get alot out
This class was very interesting! Professor K is awesome! She makes the class so much fun and is so helpful. Do the rough drafts on the papers she puts a lot of effort into reviewing them and the final result is very rewarding. I took this class for fun and knew nothing about philosophy and I'm so glad I did!
by far the best professor I've ever had. I thought philosophy was stupid and only took it as a distribution credit (intro to philosophy) and now i am in philosophic themes in film and i am thinking about switching my major to it because she teaches most of the classes. She is AWESOME
Prof K is nice. She's a very nice lady. Nice.
Prof K is the best professor I've ever had. She explains all the readings in class. I was undecided planning on going into something in business or film, and because of her I am now a philosophy major. She lets you send her drafts of papers in advanced and will give you an extensions to make your paper that much better.
I have the unique perspective of taking most if not all he courses "Prof K" teach. They are often tons of fun with either the final or midterm, occasionally both, as a take home exam. Her courses are often driven by the students often given a topic or reading to work through, as Prof K. moderates the discussion. Always a blast!
Really enjoyed my freshman seminar atheism class with her. Really fun discussions and very eye-opening. Very understanding and reasonable professor
Really like her teaching style, totally discussion base you will never sit and listen to her lecture. Always helpful, allows you to submit rough drafts of every written assignment as many times as you want so definitely take advantage. Kind of a lot of work- 5 one pg papers and one final paper so pay attention in class. Attendance counts!
Not very difficult for an introductory course. Wants students to succeed and is willing to help them throughout the semester. Very knowledgeable and her lectures were interesting.
She's wonderful
Prof K definitely cares about her students. The best part about her was that she allowed unlimited drafts for both papers, even past the due date. You have to really pay attention in every class to get above an 85 on the midterm and final though. Not too hard for an introductory class
Being a first year student, to get a professor as caring as Karofsky was a real gift. She does a great job at explaining the concepts gone over in the course, and does it in such a way that is genuinely interesting to learn about.
you can tell that she cares about her students and values their opinions. She encourages participation, and is always happy to help and is very chill. Definitely take her!
Prof K is one of the nicest professors you will have. She gives great feedback and you can revise and draft papers as many times as you want before they are due. If you're not into philosophy your head might start to hurt but she makes the class very interesting and prompts you to really think. Overall, very useful class and definitely participate!
Prof. K is by far the best for this course. 3 papers and a final exam that's similar in format. Interesting discussions always come up in this class and you deal with philosophy more than the texts. Make sure you submit your rough drafts early because she reviews them and gives you feedback till it's to her liking. Flex deadlines for final drafts.
Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had in my two years of college and Ive had her twice. With her classes she actually cares about teaching you the material and she will help you understand it if you ask. Shes so unjudgemental, which seems hard to find now a days, but the grade doesnt matter because the class atmosphere is so postiv
Being that I had never taken a Philosophy course before, this class was a lot for me to get used to. Being a psych major, I found it difficult to think as a philosopher would. Regardless, as long as you do the work you'll do well. Was a little boring for me, but prof was nice and you could tell she knows a lot about the topic and is passionate.
She's amazing!! I have taken her twice and she is so helpful and passionate about what she teaches. She lets you send her as many drafts as you please before papers are due, so definitely take advantage of that. I highly recommend taking her!
She has interesting discussions regarding philosophy and is passionate about the topics. Take good notes in her class and utilize those notes for 1 of her 3 papers youll do great. She is lenient on paper deadlines as long as you let her know before. The papers are assigned in advance with optional rough drafts that she will comment on to help you.
Prof K was the best teacher I have had so far. Her classes are always interesting and she knows a lot about philosophy. She is very helpful with papers and encourages great discussions. 10/10 I <3 prof k
Professor Karofsky is extremely thorough and passionate in her lectures. She is able to explain very complex philosophical ideas in very simple ways. If you have anything to say, she'll listen and evaluate it in terms of the conversation - so you have nothing to worry about regarding participation. Lectures are very enjoyable too! Highly recommend!
Professor Karofsky is an amzing professor. She gives insightful lectures and discussions during class and really gets to know the students. 1 to 3 papers are required, but you can send as many drafts as you wish with ample feedback to help improve your paper. She is a definite recommend for anyone taking Culture & Expression.
Professor Karofsky was great in exposing us to the idea of philosophy and philosophical thought. She was always accessible outside of class and promptly answered emails both about class content and essays. Although there is a lot of reading connected to this class, if you just do the work you will be able to succeed.
Literally my favorite professor that semester. She's very energetic, motivating and is willing to help you as long as you meet her halfway. On the whole she's a very valuable teacher that can help you expand your thinking while having a great time. Some readings can be tough but they're worth it. I can't recommend her enough, love ya Prof K!
Oh man what can I say about the best philosophy professor at Hofstra? She's open minded, quick thinking, and down to earth. My first class with her made me want to minor in philosophy (I have friends who said the same!) She is willing to go the extra mile to help you if you are ready to help yourself. Thank you for everything Prof K!
Prof K is an amazing professor! She knows her material very well and wants all her students to succeed. She allows everyone to share their opinion and is very open-minded to different perspectives. She made C&E bearable, so I highly recommend her!
Prof. K cares about her students' success. She does rough drafts for the 4 papers where you she tells you what to improve before handing it in which is an easy 100 every time. She encourages engagement but doesn't force it. Her lectures are very clear and informative. She told us what was going to be on the final the week before. I WOULD RECOMMEND!
Prof K is one of the nicest professors out there! She lets us do rough drafts and gives valuable feedback to improve our writing. She is also very understanding when it comes to midterms and doesn't overload us with assignments. Would take her again!
Prof K is easily one of the best C&E professors. She lets you hand in drafts for each paper so by the time you hand it in it's an A+ paper. Her lectures are always interesting, and you learn a lot about philosophy. The one thing I wish I knew was how much participation counts (a lot). Participation brought my grade down but I still ended with an A.
Professor Karofsky is one of the best professors in Hofstra. She made C&E enjoyable and provided meaningful insight into the readings. She encourages participation, is willing to help with revisions, and even gives comments on how to improve your paper. She cares deeply about her students and wants them to succeed. 10/10 Would recommend taking it.
(Taken fall 2019) Hardest class I have taken in college, barely scraped an A-... Listen in class and participate. She's open to your interpretations if you can argue for them. Other than participation, there are like 3 few papers arguing philosophy. When I took it, her class didn't follow the rest of C&E and went rouge topic wise
Professor Karofsky is the best Hofstra professor you will ever have. She is extremely knowledgeable in philosophy and always keeps her lectures interesting and fun for her students. She is also very understanding and genuinely wants her students to succeed in class. 10/10 would recommend taking her class.
Prof K is really passionate about Philosophy. At first, I was really intimidated by this class but she really makes the content accessible. She only requires you to write 3 essays for the class and averages them together for a final grade along with a midterm and final exam. Write the rough drafts because she will give feedback for you to do well.
PROF K IS AMAZING!!!! She is such a great professor that can explain philosophy extremely well. In the class you have to write at least 3 papers that are then averaged. On top of that there are midterm and final exams which are based on textbook, lectures, etc. Pay attention and participate and you'll be fine. She made me want to minor in phi.
One of the most enjoyable courses I've taken at Hofstra. This was my first philosophy course and she made it extremely fun. She really cares about her students and will engage with you over emails about philosophical topics for as long as you want. If you're looking for a great intro to philosophy, this is the professor for you.
I took philosophy in film with Professor K. The classes are basically open conversations discussing philosophical theories & movies that you have to watch on your own. There's 3 papers you have to write. Don't worry if you don't understand the material, she's very understanding and always willing to work with you on your papers and ideas. Take her!
Professor Karofsky is amazing. She cares about her students, and challenges you to think outside of the box. The class is based on movies. Just watch them and listen in class, and you will be ok. Grading consists of 3 papers, a midterm, and a final. If you want a fun professor who will not bore you with lectures sign up before the class is full.
This entire class is the students reading the material in advance and discussing it in class. Professor K will expand on the material we read for the class. Numerous papers, for which she does not have any hard deadlines. Papers can be a bit difficult. As long as you read the material beforehand and participate she will work with you.
Moderate amount of reading. Class was mostly talking about the reading and discussion by her and other students. She is very nice and caring.
I took Phil of Time Travel and it was a very fun course! Karofsky is enthusiastic about teaching material and strongly encourages group discussion; would def take again :)
All the bad reviews are true. Very harsh critic, very opinionated, stuck within her beliefs. You can't disagree or she'll make you restart. She cut my essay and told me I did not understand the content purely because I disagreed with her. Very closed-minded and forces her beliefs on everyone, if you don't give her what she wants, youll fail.
Prok K teachers really interesting material that makes you care about what she's saying. She gives lots of opportunities for feedback and is not super strict with deadlines, however even with feedback given it's pretty difficult to get a good grade as her grading criteria is not super clear. Still a great professor though, and would recommend!
A great professor. class is very interesting, but it is graded by a few things. 2 exams and 2 papers. all very difficult. even if you are a good student. lots of memorization and understanding. class is enjoyable but makes your GPA go downhill.
Don't get tricked by the overall rating. Prof. Karofsky is an OK teacher, she's super friendly and considerate with her deadlines. However, her grading system wasn't very clear and fair. Speaks fast and expects you to be a whole philosopher. Plus, she's a tough grader and will screw your GPA no matter how much effort you put into her class. Beware!
Prof. K is one of the main reasons I am happy I chose Hofstra for college. As a philosophy student, it is important to me that my professors are dedicated and knowledgeable. Prof. K is exceptional in her knowledge, dedication, and teaching style. Her class is one of the few that I have had where the value extends far beyond the credits I received.
I loved every single thing about Prof. K's class. She is one of the smartest, most understanding, caring, and encouraging professors I've ever encountered. She's a creative thinker and doesn't mind disagreements or debates, in fact, she encourages them. She really understands what students need. Take her course.
Great professor who is very knowledgeable about philosophy! Definitely would take again!
She's incredibly enthusiastic, knows what she's talking about, great discussions and easy enough to catch up on. Very kind and her feedback on essays is honest.
even if ur kinda an ai shill i love u prof k ur so awesome plz be my teacher again one day ok thanks
She's a nice teacher and her class is very easy. I would suggest that anyone take this class for an honors seminar, my only real note would be that she could stand to be more objective when it comes to alternative opinions but she's very open to debate which makes fighting for your own opinion easier. I would take again.
