DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! If you want an easy A, do it... but considering you want to rip your eyeballs out of your face during her lectures, I'd say it's not that easy. The class is a review of common sense and an opinion forum for all the classmates to talk about their ideas. If you want to learn anything, do not take this class
I don't know what the other person was saying. They must have not been interested in the subject. Yes, a lot of it is common knowledge but Dr. Kowal is very clear and her tests arent that difficult. Her lectures are clean and her PP slides help a lot.
Anthro of Religion - easiest class I've ever taken at FSU b/c Dr. Kowal is an easy teacher. I never read the book (do not buy), got an A on every test. Hardly studied but paid attention in class and took notes about the book work. Attendance is necessary for notes and pop quizzes (she drops 2 of 7) & most of these quizzes are just self reflection
Not one of the greatest classes I've ever taken before, but not hard either. She is fair, but sometimes a little crazy. If you just go to class, and study right before the test, you can't help but get at least a B.
A pleasant and relaxing class. The teacher is fair and approachable--no surprises. Lots of office hours, genuinely wants students to do well. She is young but acts oldish and stuffy--bothered me at first but I got used to it--likes to remind everyone she is a 'doctor'. In class pop quizzes mean you should attend. Lots of movies, books are easy.
Pretty easy. Lots of reading is assigned, but you do not have to read the book to do well. Should skim reading for class discussions and a few specific questions on test. Other than that professor was great (constantly insisted we call her doctor) and helpful in office hours. Make sure you attend lectures cause most answers for test are there.
If you're looking for historically incorrect information about the conquest of Mexico given to you by a stuffy, boring woman, this is the class for you. I made an A and didn't learn anything.
I heard this class was an easy A; However, it was a lot more work & time than I was told. lectures are extremely lengthy & usually come to a point where you don't want to listen or take notes any longer. Overall, I'd say if you go to every class & take notes/pay attention its an easy A, but if not the info is a lot & very time consuming on your own
Good teacher, subject could be interesting or boring. Lots of reading and have articles to read and questions to answer for every monday, but very doable. Tests were mostly the lecture notes. Just know the articles and stories and you'll get an easy A on tests. One research paper (8-10 pgs) but graded easily.
Dr. Kowal's classes are always enlightening. There is some moot memorization, but bones brought for display during lectures and movies shown complement the course material well. Take this class with her if it seems interesting or is required, and do not miss her Peoples of the World course for an exceptional educational experience.
Her lectures are terrible, I would literally struggle to keep my eyes open, and it wasn't like I came to class tired, her voice just lulls you to sleep. Combine that with her terrible powerpoints, and you have the reason why about half of the class would be asleep, I would look around during class and see people snoozing. I do not recommend.
DO NOT take religion. Assignments take hours and she's very picky. You have to listen to 50 classmates opinions. She doesn't teach at all. Class is so boring. Waste of time
Yes, this class is hard, and she is very picky about what you write. Don't take class if your lazy and like to skip class. I use and talk about these topics that we talked about in class in my everyday life. The class in general is extremely interesting and eye-opening. GET THE BOOK. You'll want to have the articles for a lifetime!
EASIEST CLASS EVER. Just make sure to show-up to class majority of the time because she does in class assignments. She pulls EVERYTHING from the text book, assignments, quizzes, test questions. If you go to class everyday you'd have to be asleep to make anything lower than an A. Really interesting material as well, enjoyed this class very much!
interesting class if you like anth. However, she is god awful; it's completely discussion based and she does very little lecturing of her own. Also she is by the books, her guidelines for writing papers are ridiculous and tedious. she is a bit condescending and not very helpful outside of class. If someone else it teaching the class, avoid Kowal.
Great teacher. Lots of care for her students. Teaches well and never keeps you overtime. Interesting overall, much more so if you like anthropology. Good teacher.
Class is fairly interesting. 8-10 page paper assigned in place of final. no cumulative tests. homework is assigned each week that takes around 2 hours to complete. she is overall a good teacher and willing to help her students.
This teacher is great when it comes to lectures but the tests are hard. The questions are very broad and they cover a lot of information. She initially said there wasn't a cumulative final but changed her mind during the week of of the final exam. Don't take this teacher!!!!
A little dull, but a very sweet woman. She is always willing to help. The whole class is based off 4 short books, so as long as you thoroughly read them its an easy A.
I love Kowal!! She's an awesome, caring teacher that really wants her students to succeed! If you go to class and do all the homework assignments, there's no way not to get an A. Definitely recommend her.
Dont take this class, especially if youre just taking it to fulfill a credit. The lectures are super boring and people only show up for the tests. The tests as well are slightly difficult. Her suggestions for what to study are way too broad, and dont really help.
This course was terribly boring!! Professor is not fair with grading what so ever. She is so monotone and bores the class to sleep, NO ONE SHOWS UP! She will loose important extra credit material and not grade it making your grade way lower. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! SAVE YOURSELF
Professor Kowal is a great professor. I'll admit that she can be a bit boring, but I learned a great deal from her class. She has you read 4 books throughout the semester, each with accompanying PowerPoint slides. However, pay more attention to her lecturing, it's very helpful. Four papers, four exams with a cumulative final. I loved her class!
Good class! Attendance is NOT mandatory. Hardly ever went to class, just read each individual chapter and printed out the powerpoints. DO the online assignments and you'll be good for the test. The learnsmarts are helpful to prepare for test. There are two extra credits. Overall easy class, NO papers to write either!
Really great professor. You really need to read the book and do the online assignments to get an Apass. The tests are essentially what is on the online assignments and are not difficult if you've done the readings. Her lectures are interesting especially if you enjoy the topic. She is really knowledgeable, I definitely recommend taking this class.
Incredibly dry, rants about random and useless information, and then the tests cover nothing that she rants about. every assignment, test, and paper revolves around heavy textbook memorization, which doesn't help the issue considering it's anthropology. Lectures are useless but you're forced to sit through them so you can turn in assignments.
4 books to read throughout the semester, each with a respective online assignment and test: both are insanely easy if you kept up with the readings. Gives extra credit online through bonus assignments which are worth the 30 minutes it takes to do them, usually less. Lectures seem more supplementary to the reading but she drops good info in class
Really knowledgable teacher and honestly, probably my favorite so far. Im probably going to take another class with her next semester. She makes you read 4 books, but they're not even extremely necessary if you go to every lecture. i got a B on most tests and read only the first book. Would recommend.
All the lectures are posted online so hardly anyone ever went to class. Study the PowerPoints and the online homework assignments to pass the exams. There are three exams and a few extra credit opportunities.
Interesting class on the relations and history of race, racism, and the cultures surrounding common racial themes. LOTS of ppt and lectures, but only 2 tests (mid term and final), so lots of material to remember. Tests are mostly paragraph-style answers... lots of writing. If you remember the key concepts, you'll be fine. 3 or 4 papers also.
Amy Kowal made a seemingly boring class into my favorite at FSU. She knew what she was talking about, she answered emails promptly and always answered my questions in and outside of class. She wants you to do well and give you the opportunities if you do the work.
Attending class is painful because Dr. Kowal is dry when giving lectures. Exams are really hard and confusing because they're worded weird and it's always unclear what she's asking for.
Her lectures are very dry and she gets off track and behind schedule pretty easily. She's vague about what to study for the tests, but she also gives a good amount of extra credit. She posts everything online which is nice.
She was not my favorite prof but it was an easy class. Assignments due every week helped boost your grade and tests weren't too hard. She can be a little repetitive but overall not a bad class
literally could not pay me enough money to take her classes again. lectures are vague and ultimately pointless, tests cover insane amounts of material, heavy reading assignments every week that are time consuming. kind of a harsh grader. got a B, but I had to put in A LOT of work for this ONE class, takes away from other classes. no extra credit.
She is VERY knowledgeable and a great source of knowledge. She's also really open to answering questions and helping you. She also posts lectures online and participation is not necessarily mandatory. Only bad thing is that the tests were super specific and much harder than her lectures.
I'll keep this simple, unless you're majoring in Anthropology do not take this Prof. Literally the worst lectures I've ever attended, so boring , dry with little/no sense of humor. The class shouldn't be overly hard but it tends to be from the lack of interest you'll have after a few lectures.
Doesn't actually grade anything- gives tests and papers to TA who might be messing up people's grades anyway. Doesn't stay on topic during lectures and falls behind constantly. Doesn't review for quizzes unless students beg for help. Mandatory class for anthropology majors and it will tank your GPA for no reason.
Don't take her classes if you don't have to. She doesn't help students who are struggling and purposely stops checking her email right before things are due so if you have questions about something, good luck. She goes off topic and the lectures don't match the textbook. Sad that this is a requirement for anthro majors.
You have to sit through tedious lectures in case she randomly assigns a quiz. Reads verbatim from a Power Point. Any extra material she discusses is about her kids, or how she's not qualified because she's "not a "linguist." Speaks down on students. Actual quote: "If I were from a black neighborhood I'd speak African American English."
WOW! Writing assignments GALORE, and she is not an easy grader. This was the most demanding course I have taken. We read the entire textbook, and wrote papers every week on what we read. She is knowledgeable though and you WILL learn from this course, so she does her job. Yet, I would have enjoyed the material more if she slowed down the pace.
She reads off ppts every lecture but randomly takes attendance for credit. Tests involve rote memorization of the textbook. Chapters don't link together in a cohesive manner. Really difficult to study for b/c of the lack of connections. HW due every Friday at 12am, which is awful. WAY TOO MUCH MATERIAL FOR ONE SEMESTER! Hated this class.
very boring lectures, difficult grader but if you study youll pass
Dr. Kowal is funny if you like her sense of humor. She's easy going but respected, and enjoys teaching anthropology. She is willing to explain if a student doesn't understand a topic, but most of the material is easy. Showing up to class helps, but if you just read the textbooks you'll do fine.
She gives good lectures, tests are good, covers all topics, helpful, and caring. Overall good professor.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Kowal, the other being ANT3141. She's a very solid professor and I've enjoyed my classes with her. Her sense of humor is a bit dry but she grades fairly and is more than willing to answer questions or help you outside class. She's a fair grader and I felt the work was appropriate for the course.
PowerPoints online, attendance is taken every other class by answering a question from the notes (can be submitted online so you can skip & submit from home) 2 three page papers. Shes nice and loves what she teaches -Im taking her twice next semester so highly recommend taking her class! I rented the textbook and never opened it.
This class was pretty straightforward, she has lectures that she posts online. She takes participation after every chapter lecture, (2) 3 page papers that are graded very easy if you follow rubric. 2 exams and a final (not cumulative).
She records her lectures, so you could choose not to come to class. Her tests have several extra credit questions. You read a book throughout the semester and write three papers on it. But it's basically three summary papers. There is also online homework questions that are easy, and a participation assignment each time we finish a chapter.
She's truly a great teacher this is my 3rd class taking with her, she's super easy and clear on what she wants. For this class, there are in class assignments (1 per chapter) that are super easy, 2 3-page papers and 5 easy online quizzes. Easy A if you do the assignments
Dr. Kowal's class, Intro to Cultural Anthropology, is a good class. She is funny and endearing, She always wants to help you if you have a problem. The class is lecture-style. You can get by without going to lectures, but you can't get by without the textbook, which is online & has the assignments built into it. You have 3 essays over the semester.
Gave a zero for not using in text citations.
Professor Kowal is a real gem. I wish I would've attended more of her lectures as they were always extremely enjoyable - she is simply an awesome person! There is a lot of participation but as long as you do it the TAs are fairly lenient with grading. The papers we had to write were a great way to learn more independently.
took 50% of my final paper for turning it in 2 days late, but never specified in the syllabus how much would be taken off for each day. if late submissions are allowed, it might be useful to include the deductions taken off your grade.
Loved this class and Dr. Kowal! 3 multiple choice tests, two papers based on a book you choose, and no final! As long as you answer all parts of the questions and correctly use citations you will get an A on the papers. Doesn't take attendance, but has random in-class extra credit that's added to your final test grade.
If you dont do everything in the individual assignments youre screwed. As well, the TA grades all assignments and grades very harshly. Dont take this class. Youre better off with another anthro class where youll get an easy A. Dont make the same mistake I did.
just read the online book and answer questions on what you read. thats your only hw. discussions here and there and midterm super easy
10/10 recommend Dr. Kowal! I took her online ANT2410 class for an easy A and that's exactly what it is! All tests and quizzes were taken online through connect (does not require voice or video recording!!) Discussions and homework assignments are so simple, it's hard to get anything less than a B. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
The material covered during class in the lecture was not on the test. Her class was not engaging, and although the subject matter is interesting, her monotone voice and basic borrowed slides did not provide sufficient education. She relyed on Connect for the lecture slides, homework assignments, and the recharge for tests (that were not helpful).
five EASY discussion posts, read one ethnography of your choice over the whole semester, easy weekly homework on Connect (30-40Qs from the reading). Three tests with questions directly from the weekly chapter readings. She did make us use Honorlock on test three after corona. But the tests are still easy.
Lectures don't match textbook. Basically have to memorize the textbook. Tests are extremely difficult! No review for tests. Very few points available; miss 1 or 2 points, not assignments, and you lose your A, and she/her TA grade extremely hard. First class I've taken and not gotten an A despite putting in more study and effort than I ever have.
Lot's of reading. Takes off a lot of point for citations and unclear how she wants EVERYTHING cited. Content that is not from reading is on test.
Although I feel like this class would be much easier if it was taught in person, it has been hell for online. Lectures are super long and boring and tests are super difficult. Although her class is hard and the lectures are hard to watch, she is pretty quick to respond to questions. Unless you're into archaeology, I wouldn't recommend this class.
Dr. Kowal is my least favorite professor in the Anthro department at FSU. I am a great student with a dual degree course and she's still is the worst professor I have had. She is so pointlessly meticulous with her essays- she literally takes off points for having an extra space between your first and last name in the heading. Hard tests. Bad prof.
She is really hard and her test questions don't reflect anything in her lectures slides or textbook so it gets really random. She also rarely reads her emails, especially when it comes to essay help and problems with Honorlock.
Lots of lecture notes and videos but if you read them youll pass not many grades for the semester, a tough intro course.
This class has small HW activities, 3 noncumulative exams, and a 2 part book report. Not a difficult class but I thought the exams were unnecessarily specific. For exams, read the long textbook chapters and review the HW questions and even then, you'll get some wrong bc she asks weird specifics. Not a bad professor, not a great one. You'll pass.
ANT-2410 with Dr. Kowal is the hardest online course I have ever taken. If you take this class then prepare to watch online lectures, read chapters, and read powerpoints that all factor into very hard tests. The good part of the course is you can still achieve an A if you don't do well on the tests. 4 EC points (4%) are possible at the end, DO IT.
Took her prehistory class and ended up withdrawing. Her recorded lectures and material were extremely boring. Lots of tests and homework. Choose someone else if you can.
If you are like me and will probably not put extra work into studying than the bare minimum I would not take this class. The tests are super heavy on memorization of a lot of information. She gives very helpful study guides for the test, but if you do not regularly study it is a toughie. The paper is super easy and she gives very clear guidelines.
Dr. Amy Kowal is a good choice for those wanting to take general education courses in the x and y diversity section. She gives feedback and is accessible. However this is for summer, not sure about spring/fall.
Her PowerPoints are really hard to follow along with and take notes. She either spends a lot of time talking about one slide that has little to no information that you can actually write down, or rushes through the content heavy slides.
I took this class because I am a religion major & I thought cultural anthropology would be cool, the professor herself is good, but dont take this class. Its entirely McGraw Hill BS. One of the biggest let downs of my school career. My final straw was the religion section; it made me bored of my own gd major. Find literally anything else
I enjoyed this class. Didn't interact with Dr. Kowal but she seems nice. All we had were homeworks on the textbook that repeated until you got an A. Then 3 exams, all pretty easy if you read/watch her lectures. Also 3 points of extra credit. Her class isn't suited for everyone because its mainly all from the textbook, no real lectures or anything.
I emailed Dr. Kowal a couple of times, she's very nice. Three exams, worth 50%, and you WILL need to study for each exam if you want an A. Do all the extra credit and you'll get 3 points on top of your final grade. There are optional lectures if you want to watch them, but the entire class is just reading the textbook.
If you are genuinely looking to improve as a writer and researcher, Dr. Kowal is a great professor. She is a meticulous grader but gives fantastic feedback. Not an easy A, but well worth the effort.
I really enjoyed my semester with Kowal. All of the assignments were very clear cut and she responded quickly to emails. There were three exams and they were all very fair and based heavily upon the textbook reading and her lecture videos highlight what will be on the test. Great teacher all around and definitely wants every student to succeed.
Dr. Kowal's class was very interesting but very content heavy. Her tests were hard but getting a good grade is fairly doable. I would reccomend taking notes on the lectures and redoing the practice questions until you can answer all of them from memory. Start preparing early
ANT4041 This class completes a mandatory credit by fsu so a lot of students were there for that and not anthropology. that made this class easier but I still enjoyed it. attendance matters, weekly homework, no tests or exams, and one big group project at the end of the term. she took our class on campus field trips and it was fun. she is chill
Easiest class ever. I took it online and there is one homework assignment a week that takes no time. There are 3 exams and they also are super easy. She is really nice and this class is an easy A.
She gives you the resources you need to pass, you just have to utilize them. The exams are all based on the book, so highly recommend reading and taking notes; 3 exams, no final, 1 project, one homework assignment due at the beginning of every week. The project is super easy, not time consuming, overall, she makes the course easy.
Get ready to read and answer textbook questions! But this will be the big chunk of your grade. 3 quizzes and one easy project (750 words). Just a busy work class that's taken online and asynchronously.
Chapters were done on McGraw Hill, 15-30 concepts each chapter. One chapter a week, about 30 minutes of work. Biggest project is an ethnography which was a pain but it's the only major assignment. No exams, just 4 quizzes. Overall, Professor Kowal was easy to email and her class wasn't hard to succeed in.
