She is a fair teacher. The homework is not bad, and the semester I had it the TA worked all the problems at the help session. The test are usually four questions and she will tell you what type of problems will be on the test. If the class average is low she will scale.
HW can be tricky, but there are solution manuals out there to help you out. She tells you what will be on the test so they are easy to prepare for.
Goes very very fast but you can understand what she is saying(speaks English ) seemed fair in grading.
Statics isn't extremely easy but of the three sections, ours has the highest average and it's the largest. She goes quickly but does plenty of examples and limits the written homework to once a week, which is very helpful. I enjoy this class and highly recommend anyone taking statics to be in her class. She has really helped me understand.
She does go fast but she is very clear on what she expects you to know. She gives you an old exam ahead of time and your exam is very similar to that one. Very helpful in grading.
The worst teacher. not very helpful at all. do not take her for any class.
Her research is in Fluid Mechanics. So that should already indicate that she expects you to know the stuff well. The tests are EXTREMELY challenging. I ended up having to retake AEM 311 with another teacher, and my grade ended up being 3 letter grades higher...
Though she is nice, it was extremely tiresome to learn thermo in this class. All she does is work example problems and it doesn't get across very well. Most people had to teach themselves separately outside of class. That being said, some people did really well so i guess it just depends, but if you can get someone else I would suggest it.
Horrible teacher. Her GAs are the only reason I passed this class. She just reads you the solution manual and expects you to be able to work example problems from there.
This class was really bad. Her tests were there hardest of all the sections and the average we never over ~50. If you're looking for As and Bs don't take this class. She basically worked solution manual problems (often incorrectly), didn't explain concepts very well at all, also wasn't very helpful outside of class. I was so disappointed.
One of the worst professors I've had at UA so far. She does not explain the concepts very well. The problems she works are very fast and usually wrong. Must spend a lot of time outside of class to teach yourself.
Absolutely terrible. She can't teach. I'm sure shes extremely inteligent and that might account for why she seemed completely uninterrested. She spent the whole class working problems without ever stating the whole problem so you were always confused where certain numbers came from. Test were awful. Dropped the class and made an A w/ dif. teacher.
Absolutely smart professor but cannot teach at all. Take someone else if at all possible.
She is an awful teacher. She does not explain things reads off the slides given from the book. She does do example problems but doesn't explain how she comes up with the solution. I received a D in her class had to retake it and got a 97 overall with a different teacher... AWFUL
The class is pretty straight-forward. She lets you know exactly what's going to be on the test. Her grading of the tests is extremely fair. She divides the problem up into 10 or 15 separate parts and you get credit for each part. Helps if you don't know what you're doing. There is also usually a 10-15 point curve on all the test.
Really tough tests, but gives an appropriate curve. In-class clicker quizzes aren't "mandatory", but they'll definitely help your grade by being worth 5%.
She is very on top of things which is different from most of my professors. Homework is due about once a week, but there are help sessions with TA's that are very helpful. She gives good curves on tests- we got 20 points on all three so far- some people even got 120s. I had a hard time focusing in class but the homework helped clear things up
Dr. Lang is very knowledgeable of the course material, and she does an adequate job relaying the material. The major downside is that she is very tough. The homework is long and time-consuming, and her tests were impossible to finish in the time given. However, she curves the tests very generously, which saved my grade.
Dr. Lang is very smart, however she has trouble communicating that genius to the class. She makes her class difficult to "challenge even the most earnest students". The class was interesting, but she flies through material at break-neck speed and her tests are very challenging (test averages usually around 55-60 but she scales to a 70-75).
Dr. Lang seems extremely intelligent but certainly cannot convey information to the class. With an average 25pt curve just to get the class average passing-even the best students struggle. She is however, quick to reply to emails. Weekly homework assignments (10% of grade) take upwards of 8 hrs to complete. Wish another professor was offered.
She is incredibly knowledgeable on the topic, but can expect too much out of you. If you keep up, you'll be fine. If not, you'll fall behind very quickly.
Dr. Lang is brilliant. But that does not mean she can TEACH the material. First off she assigns homework from the back of the book then doesn't give feedback on it. Gives a quiz on said homework and doesn't post the solutions until after the quizzes. She purposely makes the exams hard to "challenge" you. Avoid her at all costs!
So here's the deal. She's a nice lady. She's one of those " This class will be challenging so that you actually learn something" teachers. I don't hate her. But I was given a zero on a question when I got the correct answer... so that is upsetting. There are quizzes about every other class, and the tests are crazy hard but she curves. Maybe passed
Dr. Lang is very smart as others mention and the class is very doable. The entire class is based off of one equation and it is the most interesting class I have had so far. The tests are not difficult but the weekly homework quizzes are tricky. Each test got curved so do not worry about passing. Also she's an amazing person and very understanding.
Where to begin... She will bring religion into an engineering class? She scales by 30+ points just to make the class average a 75? I got zero credit on a free response problem on her test because I didn't do the problem the way she taught us in class? Odds are I am going to get an A in her class but I am still saying Do NOT take this teacher.
Dr. Lang is brilliant. Shes very passionate about fluids. However this is definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken in my engineering career so far, so definitely get ready to work. She's a very fair grader but her tests are HARD. You really have to stay on top of things for this class--dont slack off. Huge curves on tests. Youll pass.
The only good part about her class was the artsy extra credit project. However, despite the massive amount of homework and weekly quizzes to help you prepare, her tests are near impossible. The average for our 3rd test this semester was a 75 *after* she added a 30 point curve. She just doesnt get the material across at all, choose someone else.
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU WANT FLUIDS TO BE EASY! Tests consist of problems never seen before by students, as Dr. Lang "wants you to be a better problem solver". The HW quizzes are easy, and you get alot of partial credit. It seems as though she forgets that students have other classes that take time and attention.
Fluids is a hard class anyways, but it's rewarding. If you put in the work you can end up with a really good grade-she curves by a lot. If you actually want to learn something then take Dr. Lang. She truly cares about her students as future engineers. There are weekly quizzes, 3 exams, and the final, no turn in homework. I highly recommend her.
Weekly quizzes where she picks problems from the homwork. The homework is always 25+ questions. It's not worth doing them; better to just attempt it and get a 7 or 8 out of 10. There is a video project at the end worth 30-50 bonus points which can make up for points lost. Avg on exams always super low, but always a curve of 20-35 points.
Dr. Lang does research in the field of fluid dynamics which unfortunately means she teaches this class like a graduate level class. Her tests are very difficult but with big curves to bring the average grade around 75-78 so it is possible have above a 100 average, but not without coming to every class to do all the quizzes and completing the HW's.
Dr. Lang teaching philosophy is very different than traditional professors: She makes the material more difficult, but gives you ample opportunity to earn a grade you want in the class. Her passion for her research and previous studies shows and, after some investment of your time, rubs off on you; a model example of an engineering professor.
While she might get a bad rap, this class is very difficult on its own. Her tests are extremely difficult, but she always curves the final grade around 20 points. There is a huge workload as well. She goes so fast in the lectures that I stopped going cause I ended up teaching myself anyway. Lastly, she does care about her students greatly though.
Personally, I did not do very well in this class but that is more of a reflection of the work I put in than Dr. Lang. Her lectures can get boring at times, but she knows her stuff and seems to want you to learn. The class itself is a very hit or miss class as many kids will think it is super easy, while others will have to retake it.
Class is very involved & takes a lot of time. There are several hw assignments (online & written) and a few projects. Only a midterm & final. Several extra credit opportunities and huge scaling (at least 20 pts). Take Lang if you want to actually learn and retain info. Really helpful and respected. AEM majors: take her whenever possible.
This class is extremely difficult. She focuses the majority of the class points on projects, so those are your real grade savors right there. I failed both the midterm and final with the curves (around 20 points) and I still passed the class. My advice is to not game the homework or projects, try your best to make 100s on those. Class is worth it.
Amy Lang is a great professor; she really cares about giving students a real understanding of aerodynamics, and that shows in her lectures. A lot of people complain about her giving too much homework, but it really is manageable if you put in a little effort. I got an A without too much work. DON'T wait to start the airfoil project though.
I found this class to be difficult to follow at best. Weekly quizzes were fairly difficult, but not nearly as difficult as the midterm which was hardly related to our homework. I feel like she's an alright person, but as a professor I would avoid her at all costs.
Very generous curves. Large percentage of grades from open note quizzes, lots of HW
This class is BRUTAL. TONs of homework/quizzes and the lectures are mind-numbingly boring. Each lecture has at least 15 slides filled with writing and information. Hardest tests I've ever taken, but she curves them very generously. Weekly quizzes are heavily weighted. Make sure to do all the work and youll be fine. Do all the extra credit given
While this class is extremely challenging and Lang will make you work for your grade, it's clear she cares about her students. She recognizes that her class is difficult and does her best to provide resources for everyone to succeed. While her tests are difficult, she outlines what you should know for them and you can count on generous curves.
She gives a lot of homework and expects a lot of time to be put into studying for the class, instead of giving a review for a midterm she sent the class bible quotes and told us to pray. On the other hand, she has a great extra credit project for the class, which is easy and fairly quick.
Dr. Lang is hands down one of the best professors at UA. She does an amazing job at actually teaching students the material rather than just making them memorize things for the exam. Her tests are quite difficult, but you can always be assured that she will give a generous curve. Take Dr. Lang if you want to learn, but be ready to put in the work!
Aerodynamics is a really difficult class, but Dr. Lang makes it relatively easy and digestible. She really cares about the subject and tries to make it as interesting as possible. Her test are notoriously extremely difficult, but she curves them extremely well. I would take her again in a heartbeat if possible. I will say, do your projects early!
Awful. Avoid this professor at all costs. 2-3+ hour HW assignments due 3 nights a week. HW is much harder than anything discussed in class. Exams are worse. Does not explain lectures thoroughly at all.
She gives very hard tests in comparison to other classes. She gives 2 ~5 hour hw's every week while other classes have maybe 2 30 minute ones. You might "learn" more here, but you will have to sacrifice your GPA. I strongly recommend you take anyone else. Read any review on her specifically for statics and this is all you will see. I promise, DONT.
Don't. For your own sake, just don't. The only reason I have an A as my midterm is because I've worked my butt off every week. She assigns multiple 2-3+ (usually takes 3-6) hour homeworks a week. The problems on the homeworks are, as a classmate put it "The problems in class on steroids". Find someone else if you want a life outside of statics.
She gives at least 2+ hours of homework every week, if not more. The lecture problems are nothing like the homework or test, which can cause the homework to take even longer.
The problem is the homework, 2-3 weekly assignments, due on MWF, each taking roughly 4-6 hours to complete on average. The homework is nowhere near representative of in-class examples and tests. Also, we were given a past test to study and told that our test would be comparable. This was simply not true. Lectures are very boring as well.
This professor will make sure that you do NOT have a life outside of statics. You will have homework that's due 2 times a week that takes at least 3 hours to do each. On top of that, there are quizzes every Friday. The questions on the test are going to problems that you have never seen before. It's only her class that has to go through this.
Considering the homework we get, it feels like a six credit hour class.
Never taking it again
She is more of a shower than and teacher. Flies through the work in class where you have hardly anytime to write down or even see the work/thought process. Homework is ridiculously long and challenging and assigned very often. Take another teacher if you can, but if you can't dont worry you can still get an A since her curves are nice on the tests.
I really enjoyed this honors 300 elective. It is easy to get an A if you do the work. The readings can be extensive, but I honestly found most of them interesting. This class opens your mind to a lot of different ideas about the world, and I would recommend.
Dr. Lang does a good job explaining the material in class, and the practice problems done in class are well-chosen. Homework is plentiful and ideal for test prep. Dr. Lang's class is challenging, but her grading policies are generous. If you put the work in, you will gain a thorough understanding of the material and a good grade.
Statics is a difficult class but Dr. Lang makes it very tolerable. She works over plenty of examples in class which help much more than lectures. Quizzes are taken directly from homework and tests are always curved. Other people rating her poorly are the same people I see doing homework the night its due and barely studying/not going to class.
The bad reviews are true. She does do practice problems in class but shows it rather than teaches you. She will be religion into class which is unnecessary and grating. The homework takes 3 hours to do minimum. Beware, She sent us an email practically beginning us to give her a good review. The email was sent on November 9th so be weary.
If you want an easy class dont take Lang. That being said, she will prepare you better than any other statics prof. My only complaint is that Pearsons time estimate on HW is completely off and I think Lang doesnt know (at least from my experience & friends). The tests are hard but she scales reasonably to make up for it-Lang cares for her students!
Sent from teacher before third exam, I do not feel the ratings that have been posted so far for this class are reflective overall of how the class feels as to my instruction. I am not telling you how to rate me, but I would appreciate it very much that if you feel this class has been a positive learning experience to share so on Rate My Professor.
Using the word teacher for her would be generous, she thinks she is teaching but all she does is read off the lecture slides as if she was some robot. She offers no valuable insight of her own. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that her exact lecture slides can be found online. She also preaches religious nonsense in her lectures.
The bad reviews are true. She does not actually teach but instead just shove info and random numbers at you. Beware of the good reviews sent on and after Nov. 9th. She sent us an email practically beginning us to hive her a good review. She is not a good professor and you are better off either getting a new one or taking the class elsewhere.
Lectures are online word for word. More of a reading off slides than actually working examples/explaining. Examples in class are difficult to follow/ do not suffice for exam prep for her tests. So much HW. Exams have EXTREMELY hard written questions worth 65 points of test. Take another professor- heard from many its only her being this difficult.
She is honestly a great professor. Statics is a tough class, but its all stuff you're going to have to know anyways, so mine as well take it with someone who gives lots of extra credit. She really does care and wants you to learn. For statics in general, just be prepared to put the work in, but with Dr. Lang, she makes doing the work worth it!
If you are taking other big engineering classes, do NOT take Amy Lang. There are homwork assignments due typically 2 sometimes 3 times a week and the assignments WILL take over 3 hours to finish. If you actually want to understand the problems it would take bottom line 5 hours. Save yourself some sanity and dont take.
she gives a lot of hw
Dr. Lang is an accomplished academic who (as rare as it is among career academics) shows care for her students that is well beyond what is required of her. Statics is not an easy course. Dr. Lang recognizes this and does not dumb down the content. Her homework load is high, but her exams are graded very generously. I would take her course again.
She gives a lot of homework, and her tests and quizzes are challenging. However, she is very generous with partial credit. This is a difficult class from the start, and this has affected her rating.
Lang is solid for statics. Tests are hard but are curved generously, and the quiz question comes directly from the homework. My only complaint is that she assigns too much homework. Statics is a hard class and many people aren't willing to put the work in and blame her. You will have to put a lot of work in, but Lang will reward you for doing so.
Professor Lang is a good choice for statics. She responds well to emails and was always available for help outside of class. You get out what you put in. There is a lot of homework, and the lectures are fast paced; however, if you put in effort, you can succeed in her class. All quizzes are straight from the homework, and the tests are curved!
UH329 adds perspective in life and has the potential to change your worldview. Weekly HWs take upwards of 3-5 hrs depending on how in-depth you go. Dr. Lang does a good job of mixing philosophy with science to mold your own perspective of reality (mind/matter) and religion. This class is valuable for life but only if you want to put in the work.
hw 2x per week, usually took 4 hours to complete, but plenty of online explanations. Tests are hard and long, generous partial credit & generous curve (5-15 points) very dry lecture, not a very responsive/participatory class, monotone Quizzes once a week That being said, she is fair, helps in office hours, and tests prepare you well for future.
Her lectures are a bit boring but she cares. Most of the info required to pass the class is online. Her test reviews somewhat outline the test. The actual tests are much harder. The last two questions on each test combine to be worth 75 percent of the test and are quite hard. If you don't want a challenge, I recommend one of the easier professors.
Lang is a very serious professor. Class time is spent very efficiently as she uses most of it to solve problems for the class. My only complaints are that her explanation of concepts, particularly the reasoning behind many formulas, can sometimes be quick and overlooked, and her Homeworks usually consist of 10-20 online problems graded on accuracy.
Don't take her if you want any time in your life. Gives at least 2 homework assignments a week that are 4+ hours each. Just be smart and take another teacher, otherwise the infinitely long moment arm of god will banish you to the shadow realm.
Tests are far more difficult than what you are exposed to in class, final was completely out of range of what we should be expected to do. Exams are 60-70 points of written questions- only those who spend at least 12-20 hours a week practicing will understand. Lectures are read straight off slides. The WORST professor and experience I've ever had.
She gives 8 hours of homework a week. Her tests are extremely hard, and she claims to do these things to prepare us for the future. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I wish to never encounter a teacher like this again. Also, beware of some of the reviews after Nov 9. She practically begged our class to give her better reviews because her ratings tanked.
Dr. Lang did well in making sure everyone had the tools to succeed. Her class was hard, but she's not a bad prof. Curves tests. Just manage your time, and start studying the weekend before (or earlier) and you should be fine. She is very accessible in and out of class. Statics is just a hard course with challenging material. Super important though.
Honestly she wasn't terrible. she taught you statics and you definitely learned how to do it at the end of the class. Tests are very hard like hard hard but not impossible. Homework was a lot, but there is a chance she is going to cutback on it in the future. overall challenging but you need a little challenge in your life.
The lectures for online students are done by another professor and recorded in 2015. They get the very basic ideas across, but are lackluster. She stated that online students didn't work hard because her in person students did better, even though she doesn't lecture for online students and sends fairly unhelpful, and painfully short email replies.
Dr. Lang makes this course extremely difficult - but it does prepare you very well for the future. She scales her tests and homework grades very generously. She also does do a great job teaching/explaining/working out problems in class. You MUST put in the work to do well but a good grade is definitely possible if you put the work in.
I would newver take her again. She passes off all questions to her TA's and when you ask her in class she has no idea what is going on. Wants to talk about the bible in her lectures and wastes class time (but I hear she is getting a class for that.)
3 Weekly HW's, 6 total projects, 2 exams and a final. I had more work outside of class than the rest of my courses combined. She is a very kind woman and offers many opportunities for extra credit (it's worth it). Lectures are decent, but it's hard to stay focused for the full 75 mins. Exams are notoriously difficult, but curves average to 78%.
A lot of pointless assignments that she springs up on you without notice.
She gives a lot of homework but for a class like 313 I think it helps you learn the topics. The test are pretty straight forward and she gives you a lot of good study content. 35% of your grade in the class is homework and projects so it's easy to get a relatively good grade without doing great on the test, also lots of extra credit opportunities.
Tons of homework. She also does not make anything clear during lecture at all. It feels like you are looking a different language when she is going over new topics yet, the subjects on the tests are actually understandable. She is super smart but is not a good teacher whatsoever.
Much more homework than other sections, Exams are very difficult compared to other sections and need to be curved accordingly. Would recommend Jennifer before you take Amy.
This professor will give you a lot of homework. Each assignment must be completed on paper and scanned in. I don't think a single assignment took less than 3-4 hours. The tests are also insanely difficult and nothing like the homework you waste time on. She believes that students should know the content inside out. Please avoid at all costs.
Her course was hard and the homework's were hard but there were a bunch of ec opportunities. She also was not a terrible teacher unlike Nicholas pak and AEM 250 as she was actually competent and qualified.
Do not take her. So much homework. Statics is rough enough, but she just makes it harder.
I took this class expecting a fair workload, but the homework volume was overwhelming. Every assignment had to be handwritten, scanned, and submitted, each taking at over 6 hours. Tests were far harder than homework and barely related. Lots of good content covered, but unrealistic course-load.
Absolutely Horrible, be prepared to retake
I recommend avoiding this professor. Her teaching is to give you 20 simple HW problems a week then give you a 3 question exam that is extremely complex. She does give out a study guide but it's multiple choice and filled with definition questions that does not apply. When asks to work out problems she'll email you YouTube videos she found online.
Dr. Lang seems to genuinely care about the coursework she teaches, but not her students. Her lectures are terrible, and she rarely works problems. Skip the lecture, and cram for tests using her example exams provided. Sitting through her class will be of very little help to actually learn the material. 10+ point curves on every test. Work hard.
You'd expect someone so passionate about their subject to be a little bit better at teaching it. Nicest person as can be, but that doesn't translate to good teaching skills.
Lectures were a little boring, but she made learning the material pretty easy and usually told us what would be useful for the exams. Lots of homework and took forever, but if you stay on top of the work, the class is extremely doable. Exams were difficult, but she gave very high curves. Quizzes every week were straight from the homework.
I think most of her bad reviews are due to the nature of engineering being difficult. She was honestly a great teacher and offered lots of E.C. that made the difference between pass/fail. When I emailed with a grading discrepancy, she admitted she made a mistake and fixed it! She is very kind and obviously knows a lot about what she teaches.
Dr. Lang loves the course, but she does little to effectively help her students. Each homework took me at least six hours. There is no in-class review and no way to really know what will be on the tests. I would understand the homework and then get smoked by the test. The test curves will save you; one curve was worth 22 points. Stay on top of work
