She's a little all over the place but she has good intentions. Go to SI sessions they help you understand the material so much.
Shes really nice, but is a horrible lecturer. If you are taking this class to fulfill your science credit for a non- science based major then take another class. I am considering dropping it. I have yet to go to an SI session those may be helpful.
Her notes are unorganized. Regardless of what she may say, her tests are NOT exactly what she says in class. Reading the book helps a bit, but some questions are vague and can be easily misinterpreted. WOULD NOT CALL THIS AN INTRO CLASS. Luckily, I like geology.
Her personality is enjoyable and she clearly explains the material but her tests are very tricky and many have trouble with them.
Dr. Luther is all over the place with her lectures and draws useless pictures all over the board every class. This is not an easy 1001 class, and I would recommend getting a different teacher. Her tests are tricky and some questions do not come from the notes.
she is very unorganized, draws useless diagrams on the board that do nothing but waste time, and doesn't seem to know the material too well. I don't recommend taking her specially if you are looking for an easy A and are taking higher level classes such as calc or physics with it as this class will consume a lot of your time.
All over the place, draws useless pictures, tests are hard, she tries to help but she doesn't even know what she is talking about most of the time. The class is a complete waste of time.
Very unclear and confusing. Tests are very hard
Don't take this class! Not a good teacher and she has no idea what she is talking about.
She is very ditzy, and is very knowledgeable but she has a tough time explaining concepts...
TERRIBLE TEACHER. She does not understand that this is an introductory class. She does not seem to know the answers to half the questions students ask. She makes things much harder than necessary. The tests are extremely tricky. Do not take Amy Luther unless you want to destroy your GPA with a stupid Gen-Ed.
Dr. Luther is a little all over the place sometimes. She does write all of her notes on the board, but they can be a little confusing. She is a very nice lady and will help you when you need it. The tests are hard, because they cover things that weren't on the notes or weren't clear in the notes. The class overall was just okay.
This teacher is all over the place, and makes it clear that she doesn't know, and won't thoroughly teach all the material required for the test. I'm so glad it's over, I studied very hard and still did terrible on the tests because the notes she gives aren't thorough
Professor Luther is a little ditsy but has good intentions. Doesn't always know what she is talking about, and will admit it. Writes her notes on the board, so it is easy to take notes. Very helpful outside of class and gives VERY EASY homework. Class is really not that hard. Study the notes she gives and look at the diagrams and you will do fine.
Tests are very difficult. I would personally to recommend her class.
Her notes are a little all over the place but she is a great teacher. She will help you anytime if you just ask. Is willing to come even not when it is her office hours. Very helpful and nice! Test are hard but not impossible.
Do NOT take this professor. The tests are too difficult and she teaches like she doesn't know the material or what she is doing.
Luther is a very helpful professor. Most of these reviewers are right about the class notes not being adequate to excel on the tests. About 15% of test questions are picked up in class, the rest are completely from the book and often unmentioned in class. Read and take notes from the book and you'll do fine.
She is not a good teacher, class seems easy but the tests are very difficult. Don't expect to learn too much.
I would not recommend this professor. Test were very hard and notes did not cover material that was on the test. Sometimes it seemed like she didn't know what she was talking about. Do the homework because it ends up being worth a large percentage of the final grade. I made a D on the first test and the rest C's. Ended up with a B.
Subject material is fun. She is definitely passionate about geology. Some friends complain about her, but I found this class very easy. Online smart figures from homework are extremely useful in studying for tests. Occasionally has in class assignments. She offers some extra credit. I never needed to talk with her but she is very willing to help.
I dont know what people are talking about her tests are very easy. I made a 95 in the class with little effort. Watch the videos from the homework when studying for her class. She is a great teacher and wants to help all her students
I never went to class and I received an A. We only had to study for about 20 minutes before each test. She is changing her testing style next year so prepare for harder tests. The homework is all online and really easy. The quizzes are also simple.
tests are completely concept sketches, so you don't have to really read entire chapters. she posts possible sketches that could be on the test, so study those and you'll be fine. going to class is a waste of time. there are a lot of assignments online throughout the semester, which will account for 25% all together.
It isn't too hard to get an A. The only reason you need to go to class is for the random bonus assignments. The tests were literally sketches straight from the book, and the rest of the points came from online homework and quizzes. The TA review sessions were way more helpful than anything the professor went over in class.
During the first lecture while handing out the syllabus, she very clearly said you didn't need to attend class. She was right. However, at the end of the semester she sent out an angry email complaining about the lack of attendance. Overall the class was ridiculously easy. There are a lot of online assignment. Make sure to check due dates!
I'm going to be honest, I didn't go to class much but I still managed to make an A. I highly recommend using the SI sessions to your advantage!!!!
Amy Luther knows her stuff! This class was a piece of cake. I could have literally made a 0 on my final and still got an A. As long as you do all of your online homeworkquizzesLeansmarts you will have an easy time. The online Learnsmarts were a pain in the ass but you just have to get through them.
Supper easy!! 4 test and their drawing!! 25% test 25% quiz 25% homework and 25% learnsmart.. just do the online stuff and practice drowning the sketches. easy and would take her class again!
She is a boring lecturer, but my interest in the topic was my motivation for going to class. SUPER easy tests.
EASIEST GEN ED COURSE AT LSU. LECTURES ARE SO BORING. 75% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE IS ONLINE. 4 CONCEPT SKETCH TESTS WORTH 25% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE WHICH ARE AVERAGE DIFFICULTY. THE SI TEST REVIEW GIVES YOU THE ANSWERS SO GO TO THAT. I ATTENDED CLASS 6 TIMES THE WHOLE SEMESTER AND GOT AN A. SKIPPED THE FINAL EXAM WHICH IS THE 4TH TEST AND STILL GOT AN A.
You can go to class or you don't have to. If you miss class it's not a huge deal but sometimes she gives extra credit so you could miss out. Make sure you do the homework, it will help you on the tests!
This is such an easy elective. I literally never went to class, I only went to the SI review sessions before each test. The majority of your grade is online homework, so just do that and you'll do fine.
Pretty easy class. Amy is a good teacher. She does not require attendance except for test days. There were 3 tests which include 2 sketches on each. If you are really good at memorizing sketches you will do well. The homework and quizzes are on Connect and they are very important to do well on. A looseleaf textbook and chegg are really helpful
Class is incredibly easy. Tests are memorizing sketches and drawing them. She adjusts test grades based on the difficulty of the sketch. Going to class is definitely not necessary because all of the quizzes and homework assignments are online. Go to the review sessions and do all the assignments and an A is pretty easy.
After 1 month, told us we don't have to go to class. I stopped going. 65% of grade is online( learnsmart, HW, and Quizzes). The other percent of the grade comes from exams on sketches. Around 10 sketches you need to know for each exam, but only 2 are on the test . Just go to SI session right before exam and get all of them to memorize.
I like this class because the participation, homework, and quizzes are all online. It helps to go to class so you know background knowledge for your hw and quizzes, but you can use your book too since they are online. The exams are concept sketches that she draws in class. There is also an exam review session which is helpful.
She uses an online program for homework and quizzes, and so long as you buy the book (NOT through the program, then you can't open it during quizzes/tests), then she is perfectly fine with you using it. The exams are so easy, it's almost criminal. You have to draw sketches that come straight from the book. I only showed up to class for tests.
This class is SO easy I would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy gen ed. I never ever went to class and ended with a 95. All homework is online & straight from the online book. Also, she tells you exactly what is on the tests. (all you do is draw sketches for the tests....)
For the tests you have to do sketches that are a bit of a headache. I'd rather multiple choice tests but the class was fairly easy. You do have to study but it's not impossible to get an A+. Go to the SI sessions if you don't go to class. And make sure you do the homework! It's a huge chunk of your grade.
Dr. Luther is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. 65% of your grade is online quizzes, homework, and learnsmarts and the other 35% is from the 3 tests you have. As long as you go to class to copy the sketches she gives you, you will definitely get an A. Highly recommend her
You don't have to show up for class just go to the SI sessions before each test and you'll be fine. there was a lot of online homework and quizzes
Class is extremely was extremely easy, perfect for a general ed class, would definitely recommend
Super boring class. The tests were just drawing diagrams we learned about, so all you need to go to are the study sessions the day before. Lots of online homework but it's all in the textbook.
Tests are 65% concept sketches. For each test learn 10 concept sketches, 2 are on test. Online homework heavy. Teach yourself class.
Not a difficult class. I only went to like 2 classes. Hate that the tests are 2 concept sketches and 10 multiple choice when you have to learn like 12 sketches. Lots of online homework every week. She's a super cool person and easy to talk to but I would definitely not take this class again.
Not an awful class but I probably wouldnt take it again. You have to memorize 9 sketches for the tests and only 2 are on the test which is reallt difficult. The online homework and quizes are harder than you would expect. Theres no more SI sessions and the review sessions werent very helpful becuase she makes the class ask questions.
Lectures are ridiculously boring, but attendance is not mandatory. I went to this class about once a month on average. Tests are just sketches that she gives you weeks in advance. There's a lot of online homework every week, but it's not insanely difficult. Even putting in zero effort whatsoever can still earn you a decent grade.
Dr. Luther is really easy. Show up to class copy down some sketches and memorize them and an A is easily attainable. Multiple choice on the tests comes from her lectures but it is very basic material. 3 hours of studying the night before the test should get you an A.
Don't listen to those good ratings anymore because those people had SI sessions which she no longer does. You have to go to class to get the sketches, then you study 9 of them for only 2 to be on there. Its ridiculous. this is no longer an easy elective.
Do not take this class. There are no SI session. This class is STUPID hard. dont recommend.
Tests are ridiculously hard and way too much information. NOT AN EASY CLASS. She is awful, probably due to 90% of the class only showing up on test days
Dr. Luther is actually really good- Im a Mass Com major so i didnt want to do anything with Geology. Super super easy. Take her if you like easy homework for easy credit and if you go to class, EASY A. Her class made me want to take the class again.
Was supposed to be an easy class and could have been, but exams are ridiculously hard. have to learn 10 sketches plus labels but only are given two of them. Definitely would not take again
Literally THE most boring gen ed I've ever taken. Tests are ridiculously difficult to prepare for since you have to memorize how to sketch and label about 7-10 diagrams when you are given two random sketches on the test both worth 32.5 points. Gives extra credit but randomly and in class. If you need a gen ed science sequence, do biology instead.
Her voice annoyed me but I could manage. Her exams are so hard though! You have to memorize about 10 DETAILED sketches for each exam & but only have 2 on your exam. Sketches are where the majority of the pts come from. The multiple choice & short answers are hard. She does some bonus. Lots of connect and LearnSmart homework. I ended up with a B.
This class is complete bull. There's no reason a geology class should be this hard. Ignore all the other reviews because she doesn't have an SI anymore. This class is ridiculously hard. She expects you to remember WAY to much information for only 3 tests (including the final). Would not suggest this or ever take again
There are only 3 tests, random extra credit days, Homework is 60% of your grade. You need to memorize sketches for the tests, they are 65% OF THE TEST GRADE.
The class is easy if you can do busy work and memorize. There are only 3 test, and 65% is sketches you do in class. I f you can keep up with 2 hours of busy homework online each week and memorize some pictures before the tests you should get an A.
Luther thinks her class is more important than it is.
Does tophat every day with questions so attendance is mandatory. Lectures are boring and test are very hard. Would not recommend taking.
She has a strong accent and we do get a lot of assignment but she walk you through it. The quizzes we have to take are only four to 5 questions and she have to take the quizzes post a power-point to review before we take them. There is a lot of work but we do it in groups and its not hard. The class is easy the only challenge is the quizzes.
Amy Luther's grad assistant taught this geology lab and he is amazing! He helps with every problem if you ask and grades things easily. If you show up to every lab and do the pre-lab reading (most of the time isn't long) then you should get an A. There are 5 question quizzes before each lab that moderately difficult.
this is the hardest 1000 level class you will ever take in your life. she expects you to memorize 10 DETAILED page long sketches for every test, which are 65% of the test. she is also EXTREMELY boring, I struggled to stay awake in class. i have a very good memory and remembering the sketches is still ridiculous to me. and theres a ton of homework.
Not sure why she has so many bad ratings on here, but I have made an A+ on every test so far in this class. (And I really don't study too much for them) The sketches are really not as bad as everyone says. Dr. Luther is the nicest teacher ever, and drops a few grades. 100% recommend taking her class!
She gives you 6-8 concept sketches to memorize for each of the 3 test. She only asks for two on the test, but if you know all of the sketches you will absolutely make an A on the exams. Have to go to class to get the sketches, she doesn't post online.
Hardest gen ed class offered here. More than half the exam material is based off 10 or more intricate sketches while only 2-3 actually make it on the exam. Do not recommend this professor if you are looking for an easy geol course, she does not seem to care that students have core classes to devote hours of studying towards instead of drawing.
I'm not sure why some folks are being so humble about this class. It's one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. seriously. She expects you to draw out pictures of diagrams she shows in class perfectly on 3 tests and usually wasn't available after class. I dropped the class and am retaking it. It's stupid hard for a gen ed 1000 course.
Super easy class if you show up everyday and take good notes. I never skipped a class and took decent notes and study a little and the exams are a breeze. She really emphasizes the diagrams of geologic events on exams, so make sure you understand them. All semester, we had 2 homeworks and 2 presentations. Low stress class!
Honestly I got so much hype about this teacher and she really didn't do much for me. Her class was so unnecessarily hard. If you have to take this class, try to get a better teacher if there is. She did let us do packback, which saved my grade. She also curved all our tests which saved my grade. She also let us use a small notecard on the final
This class is unnecessarily difficult. We had to go online because of COVID-19, so that saved by grade exponentially. There are Packback assignments every week which will help your grade out. If theres a different professor available, try to get that one. If not, Dr. Luther won't be the end of the world.
Dr. Luther is a great professor! I had her for SCI 1001, and the class was very easy overall. She did a great job of highlighting due dates and important information about the group project. I had her for SCI 1001 which was not an option to add. I would definitely take this class again!
Dr. Luther is a solid choice. She is very fun and kind. She is able to answer lots of questions and instructs well.
She was just awful. I tried so hard and she wasn't responsive to emails, and wasn't in her office when she was supposed to be there. She just clearly didn't care about her students.
I was in the lab on Wednesdays w the TA Matthew Danielson. We do a quiz based on the previous lecture which is easy if you make a quizlet. You have to buy a lab manual. You also can't miss one lab or ur screwed. The final was kinda hard and you have to id rocks. Helped a lot in my normal GEOL 1001 class, though. Labs were participation
This class was difficult for no reason. Even as a 1000 level course, her tests were so hard and short answer HEAVY. If you miss class, you will not do well on the tests. Material is difficult and she makes it even more difficult. She is very passionate about the subject, but if you don't love geology as much as her, you will dread this class!!
Never once met Professor Luther, so I think the class heavily depends on what TA you get; I had Danielson and he was fantastic. Danielson helped us each week with the labs and the weekly quizzes came straight from the powerpoint he did from the previous week. Tests were a bit loaded, and rock identification was tested on, but everything was doable.
I had her for SCI 1001 and she wasn't really active in the class at all. We had class on Mondays from 3:30-5 and she would come for the first 30 minutes and then leave. Her TA's just talked about themselves for the rest of the class and we weren't allowed to leave. I didn't learn anything in this class and we were only graded on weekly reflections.
I had her for SCI 1001 and she always left in the middle of class and left her TAs to teach the class. She was slightly disrespectful to me and some of the other students. Her instructions were never clear and told us how to do things after the assignment needed to be turned in. Also the TAs I had were terrible and super rude.
She was really passionate about geology and it showed in the lectures. Definitely would take again.
The people complaining most likely didn't put in any effort. This is just like any other lecture class. She posts her powerpoints online but you will get more notes by showing up to class. Went to half her lectures and still got a 100 on almost every exam because I put in the bare minimum of effort. She allows notecards for her exams.
The most boring lecturer I've had. Talks down to the class and takes forever to talk about one point. Hated every second of this course, plus she uses packback. Don't take this class.
She was absolutely awful. Talked down to students and ignored questions. She clearly hates teaching.
Professor Luther is definitely very interested in what she is teaching, and cares about her students passing the class. She does her best with thoroughly explaining what will be presented on exams, and will curve the exams if need be. She does have a weekly homework assignment but it is very simple and a grade booster. I would recommend.
Dr. Luther's lectures lack with clarity or cohesiveness. It genuinely sounds like she's just as confused as we are. I have not learned a single thing from her. She tries to write on the lecture slides to make the class "engaging" but its oftentimes hard to read, takes up class time, and does not make the material any clearer. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I did not enjoy Dr. Amy's class at all. The lectures were always boring, not to mention the fact that she never seems to be sure about the information she is teaching. This class was poorly structured, but you may like it more if you have a passion for Geology. If you don't then I would definitely recommend not taking her.
I honestly have never met her. My TA is Kwabena Poku-Agyemang. He is fantastic and you really cant say that about many TAs. He speaks clearly, and he is very helpful. So hopefully you get a good TA but if you have Kwabena Poku-Agyemang as your TA, you're good. Exams aren't hard if you prepare. DO YOUR READING!!!
Dr. Luther does nothing for these classes, never answers emails, and your grade depends on how motivated your TA is. Grades unfairly.
Let me start off by saying she is extremely kind. The lectures are pretty boring though and attendance is required. If you absolutely need to take a science, I would recommend this over Biology unless you're good at the latter. Exams are pretty hard, but I think that if you study enough you can make it through. PowerPoint's are boring as well.
Amy Luther doesn't teach this class, instead, it's one of her TAs. My TA was Sarah Seale, and she was amazing. Your grade consists of 10 labs, 10 quizzes,1 midterm, and 1 final. Not a hard class but maybe it was because I had a good TA.
Dr. Luther's lectures were dry and unengaging, and she was hard to reach for help. Despite attending almost every class, I felt I learned very little. The test material often didn't reflect the slides, making preparation frustrating. Overall, I struggled to engage with the course due to the lack of clarity and support.
I've had a great experience with Dr Luther. She's very sweet, helpful and was understanding when I messed up on one of my assignments. Her lectures are great but you have to show up to class for the notes as they're not on the powerpoint slides on Moodle. Favorite class of this semester.
Her lectures are often off topic, and sometimes it seems like she doesn't fully understand the material that she is teaching. Her reviews are also long and often unrelated to the content that will be on the test. Attendance is mandatory, and often feels like a waste of time.
Dr. Luther is a kind professor with a clear passion for geology. Her casual, laid-back nature makes lectures enjoyable and interactive. The main advice I will give you is to start early on the final project, as it is incredibly time-consuming if you do not pace yourself. She also allows a double-sided 3x5 notecard on tests. Great professor.
Amy Luther isn't actually teaching, it's a TA. The TA I had for my lab was amazing.
We did not have Amy Luther, our TA was Giancarlo. He is an amazing TA who is a great guide for this class. He has set deadlines that never change, and you know all of the work you have to do for the whole semester on day 1. He is very helpful in answering questions, has a great personality, and makes and is very clear about what will be on exams!
I had Giancarlo as the TA. He was super helpful and graded lightly. The topics were well explained and easy to understand. He was also easily approachable if you needed help. I would recommend 1601 if you're looking for a lab to take.
Depends on TA but I got Giancarlo and he was a great TA. 10 labs with 10 quizzes and midterm/final. Gave study guide for midterm and final. Just attend and study for around 30 minutes to get a great grade.
Amy Luther's lecture classes are phenomenal. I love the way she teaches and it made me genuinely interested in learning science again.
Professor Luther was a great professor! Super thorough and will answer any question you have. She makes review sheets for the exams which tells you exactly what to study, extremely useful. She allowed a notecard for our exams. She always reviews the daily quizzes to make sure we understand. She's great!
