I was in her first set of students that she taught at AN for Sum. 11'. She was VERY clear when speaking. HW is 20%, Tests are 80%. 4 tests. I failed Calc 1, 3 times due to terrible teachers. I passed her Calc 2 class first time through no problem. Show up to class, pay attention and youll do fine no problem. Would recommend to anyone.
She is the best math teacher I've ever had so far. I would take another one of her classes if I had to. She makes everything so clear and easy that you don't really need much studying for her tests if you do your homework. A GREAT teacher.
Good professor but she takes off a lot of points for mistakes. Textbook isn't needed but it's good to have if you need more problems to study.
She is a very clear and organized teacher. She follows the syllabus (except she DOES give extra credit even though she said she wouldn't). She's fair and a great teacher! Great communication and updates grades quickly.
a veryy good teacher...very nice...if you do the HW and attend class an A is not hard...one of the best teachers at nova! alsooo shes kinda cute!!
Not a bad professor, got an easy A, didn't need to use the textbook; but honestly she sounds like Kari from The Incredibles...such an irritating voice to have to listen to at 9:00 am.
This class goes way to fast. I can barely keep up! Apparently we are a day ahead, what is the rush?
Class is fast paced, must take notes quickly or else copy from your fellow classmate. She expects you to know everything from calc 1 becuz she wont review it. class is not interesting at all, but she knows her stuff and teaches clearly following her syllabus.
take her class and you will love it. she explains everything very clearly and gives you extra credit on your tests.
Notes straight from book, it helps to write down. Fast pace note, be prepared. Exams based on homework and much easier than example problems. Final based on exams, subjects not asked on exams won't be on final. Doesn't drop lowest exam but will duplicate final score if its higher than that exam. Easy A class but I literally spaced out every class.
some professors will go above and beyound to help their students learn and understand the material. this is not one of those professors. if you ask questions she will roll her eyes and tell you that's calc 1 stuff she will mock you infront of the class fast pace notes and harsh grader. would not recommend this professor at all try a different one
doesnt' explain her examples that well in clarity, she's pretty much in a hurry idk why.. ok teacher, not the best compared to other math professors
She is AWFUL! she gives you a billion hard examples in class that never help you out on the tests anyways. She rarely gives partial credit. Her tests are 10 questions worth 10 points each so even if you miss 1 and a point on another question it will take you down from an A to a B..don't waste your time!
Dont Take This Professor
She is the worst I am forced to take her because I failed pellerin out of me not doing homework and failing tests. Shes not worth the time or patience she will fail you at all costs.
Top Class Professor who is working on her PHD dissertation. She give extra credits take home problems. This is like project to help motivate you in the field of mathematics. She gives lots of math problems homework because she knows that by doing them....you get a sense of being at "home" within the mathematic world. I will take her for MTH174/277.
If you are reading this then do not take her class. I have always been good at math but she ruined my love for math. She goes way too fast. You have to print out so many pages at home.I cannot keep track of them. She has so many examples that have nothing to do with the test. Goes too fast when explaining them and skips steps so people get confused
if you come to class, study hard, ask questions no matter how easy or hard they are then you are going to get an A. She is very very hard but if you study from her worksheets and practice her problems over and over again you will do fine.
This professor was really good for the subject. She was clear and consistent with the incredible amount of material she went over. Her demeanor is pleasant and it shows that she genuinely likes math. If you plan on taking math seriously then this prof will only compliment your ambitions.
down side: Hard tchr, fast pace class (summer sem), expects you to know almost everything right after she does the lesson, let you print out tons and tons of papers, if you make silly mistakes on the test expect that you won't get a good grade, doesn't give you effort on the test.GOOD SIDE: she gives extra credits (10 pts),no text book required.
Nice Professor, willing to help out, in class or in her office. Very understanding and clarifies the notes.
This professor is very nice and helpful, but...super hard. This is going to be a hard class for you if you don't practice the problems at home. She goes waaayyy to fast, sorta expects for you to already know some the material. You need to print out all the notes, and be prepared for class. Very important that you print them out. SMOKIN HOT prof!
seems strict at first but does care about you understanding the material (if try hard) very helpful but goes through the notes really fast. have to print out notes but worth it! 4 exams not including final but drops lowest test score. assigns hw on mymathlab so really no point of a textbook. overall for my first semester i really enjoyed her class!
Good instructor, my only suggestion is to show more of the graphics using some type of graphing software. Test were fair, review sessions were excellent, and the tutoring center helped me a lot. Thanks to Matthew for all his help.
Do not take her class. She goes through the notes way to fast. She expect for you already know materials really well.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. HORRABLE TEACHER. I have never come across a more cold, impersonal, rigid, & uncaring teacher than Amy Macrina. She has absolutely no people skills & makes taking the class much more difficult then it should be. If you send her an Email and it doesn't have your name, class, day, or time she will simply delete your Email.
She can be tough and intimidating. Definitely not an easy A. However, she is a challenging teacher that has a good teaching style. I learned a lot became a better math student because of her.
Not an easy A at all, but she's a great teacher. If she was available for the next level of math I'm taking, I would take her. Offers bonus points for every test (must be in class or must see her to get this handout). Only a final and 4 other tests. Requires a lot of notes (PRINT ALL OF THEM OUT AND BRING THEM TO CLASS, AND KEEP THEM UNTIL THE END)
She is very clear about the subject, and the class follows a handout she made for each chapter. The handouts are really nice b/c you won't hurt your wrist trying to write down everything other profs write on the board. It has summary for concepts, equations and examples for you to do in the class. Also she looks hot and cute for a professor.
Professor Macrina knows her subject, great at solvin problems step by step so people won't get confused. You can print off class notes from blackboard so you don't have to write so much, make sure you print them out. Hws are all on mymathlab & there are only 4 of em corresponding with 4 exams. The lowest exam grade gets drop. Nvr use the book.
YOU WILL FAIL DON"T TAKE THIS CRAZY LADIE'S CLASS!!! F'S ALL AROUND. IF YOU TAKE IT IN THE SUMMER 6 WEEK YOU ARE MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE DROP NOW AND SIGN UP FRO CWALINA IN THE FALL SHES SO SO GREEDY AND PATICULAR IN GRADING!!!
Took this course with another professor and she is clearly the best of the best. Loves to teach the material. Detailed notes. Mandatory online hw. Explains a problem in many different ways if you still dont get it. Taking 174 with her also.
she's knows the material, class is a bit boring and longgg!! also 90% of what she teach are not in the exams, you have to study the right parts or you'll be screwed.
Took her precalc at annandale nova. Very strict but teaches very well. Alway asks if we have any questions during the lecture. You just have to put your work into it. Study and you'll pass the class. I'd take her class if she taught upper levels
If you are someone good at math, this is the perfect teacher to have. I enrolled in this class and did not use a textbook and got an A. Homework is mandatory . Overall I learned a lot. She's a really good teacher, and you will learn if you attend and listen.Definitely I'll be taking MTH 174 with her.
She just goes over the same examples in the book. Boring class, she does not explain and get nervous whenever s.o asks questions. DON'T TAKE HER.
Go look at how many people are left in her class after the withdrawal date. 80% of the answers right can still give you a D in her class. The only reason she doesn't have a worse rating is because there is no mandatory homework. Try to take math at a different campus. Nobody great at Annandale now. :(
She uses an e-text, which was written by someone she knows. She is completely unsupportive. She does not grade with any leniency. I give her an F as a teacher. She could go back to wherever she learned to be so harsh, and stay there. Anything I learned was learned through trial and error. I learned NOTHING from her.
Teacher's not that helpful...and not very good at explaining concepts. Homework is online. Wouldn't recommend her if you're not that good at math.
Worst math prof I have took in my life She makes us print out all the notes for her class, nothing from the notes are in the exam it's like she gets the questions from another world.she grades very harsh, even if you have all the steps right but answer wrong she will -10 points everyone is failing her class DO NOT TAKE HER she is horrible
Although I am getting an A, I really hate her grading. She nitpicks a lot at your steps on exams. You better find another professor. Avoid her.
Horrible professor, she grades horribly, stay away from her,she killed my GPA.she is cold and has no people skill. Save your life, dont live a miserable life with her like i did. I truly regret taking her.
she explains well sometimes, sometimes she does not know how to explain the concept she makes it more confusing.her lec. are ok.Her exams are terrible, and her grading is absolutely ridiculous, she takes off points for no reason. Avoid her.
gives easy examples on projector. textbook needed for HW, but doesn't collect HW. If you don't do HW, your exam will reflect it. exams are difficult compared to other profs. she will use calc 1&2 materials on exams. very hard grader. I can thank her for making me study hard to become the genius i am now. my brain grew twice it's size. brain muscle!
DO NOT TAKE HER. VERY HARD GRADER. I REGRET TAKING HER. AVOID HER IF YOU CAN , YOU WILL SAVE YOUR GPA
She is a super hard grader. takes off points on ever little thing ever. Don't take her, especially if you are taking a summer 6 weeks course. It's condensed materials and she doesn't account for the small time frame. Bombards us with too much information to recollect in such a small time frame. Don't take her. GPA ruiner.
I did not like taking this class at all. She is so bad at everything. Her tests are really different from the stuff she teaches. DOn't take her.
took it with her, failed the class, very hard grader. The tests are way different than what she teaches in class, not even related to what we took. Do not take it with her, you will save your life and GPA
if you can take it with another prof. that would be better, her tests and grading are very hard.
Super hard grader. Avoid her
I got to be honest, Prof Macrina was a strict math grader but she taught well. She will post packets on blackboard that we need to print out to take notes on. Although, she went fast pace on lecturing so if you're the best note taking person, I suggest taking her. Homework is a MUST DO or you won't pass the class. You'll have daily quizes.
Must do Classwork Notes to pass
I you enjoy teaching yourself tough math concepts you should take her class. Your grade is entirely dependant on exam scores. The problems that she puts on the test are typically much harder than the ones in the book and she is a very picky grader.
Professor MacRina teaches extremely well. But, unfortunately, I dropped out of her class because I was failing. And the reason I failed was because the overall class grade was highly dependent on the tests, and the tests were really hard, and she is a tough grader. And also, no calculators, whatsoever. Made life miserable.
professor macrina is a very tough grader. even though on the syllabus she says no extra credit, there is a bonus problem for every test! she drops lowest quiz grade and replaces lowest test score with final exam. She is very picky but if you do the lecture notes and the MML then you will pass. went from a c to an A because of the final!
Not an easy A, but a great teacher. Can seem a little stern, but to the point, and helpful during office hours. PRINT OUT THE SHEETS SHE POSTS ON BLACKBOARD. Show up for class, do the HW(it's online, you can do the problems till you get 100), ask questions, study for the tests and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT(it can add like 10 points). Def would take again
THIS IS A SELF-TAUGHT CLASS. She does not use blackboard collaborate, so she does not lecture you in any way. All she does is grade your quizzes and tests. While "no lectures" sounds great , it's not. In lectures, even virtual lectures, professors can explain the topics and answer questions immediately. Here you are completely on your own.
No lecture material, not there to help. Glorified grader. And an unreasonable one at that. Shes does not care about her students at all, and it shows. It's teach yourself, and only 4 grades make up 80 percent of your grade. Avoid her at all costs. I would even wait until another semester just to get another teacher if it came down to it.
I have taken MTH 173 & 174 online & passed it with B's, but do not take MTH 277 online with her. She is a tough grader, expect 5 points taken off your questions. Very picky ! I dropped her on time in the spring 2015 semester before my GPA had to be ruined.
She goes fast
All class was notes and examples, do the MML and review the notes from class and youll be okay. She is pretty clear and will do extra examples if asked. Her tests are pretty straightforward, as long as you try you will do fine. She drops the lowest test grade and replaces it with your final exam grade.
I've taken several math courses in NVCC and this professor's teaching method works the best for me Hand Down. I'm a visual learner and professor MacRina clearly writes and explains every single problem that would ever be on the exam so that you can learn step by step what's going on instead of giving long sloppy lectures like other math teachers
Just finished this class last week and honestly Amy was extremely helpful the entire semester. Granted you cannot simply "get an A", undoubtedly you will work for it. Any one that complains about their grade either didn't show up to class or never tried. 4 exams and a final along with 10 points of possible extra credit per test. TAKE IT.
Very organized! She really knows the material well. Whenever you have questions, she can always answer you quickly. Tests are not hard if you study her notes. Do not really use the textbook for MTH-174. Great professor overall.
Took her online mth 173 class. Honestly, it was relatively easy. There are four exams and a quiz almost weekly. I barely did any of the homework does not count. would learn most of the material prior to exams and did pretty well on them. I failed one exam because I did not even look at one section so I missed a few questions. There are only 10 ?s
Calc III - the course is tough, but she does a good job of explaining the material. You need to do the optional homework. Provides notes packets to fill in along. No fluff points: your grade is based on four tests and the final. Nice professor, but she doesn't like really dumb questions (understandably).
You have to print atleast 20 pages of notes every week. You also have a quiz every week, and they're not easy. She goes over notes very fast so it's hard to understand the material. She doesn't explain the notes very well either.
You have to print atleast 20 pages of notes every week. You also have a quiz every week, and they're not easy.
Grades horribly. If you have the correct answer she marks it as wrong, unless its written w/explanation. She never goes over the test when its handed back. I have never failed a class before, I'm dropping it. You have a quiz every week, which is harder then class. She is horrible at communicating, I went to her office once and she was no help.
She is an extremely tough grader and I don't always understand why she marks things wrong. There are quizzes every week that are fine IF YOU STUDY. Every lecture consists of her working out the problems in the notes. The amount of printing you have to do is insane. However, I have managed to get over 100 on all the exams. Expect to STUDY!
I really loved her class. Great lectures and she posts the notes that you can fill in online before class. Her tests are from the homework and practice problems. Homework is optional. She gives a bonus question before each test that is worth up to 10 points on the test. She is a great professor.
I took the honors section of Calc 1. 18 people started the class but only 9 showed up for the final. Of those 9, I think 3-5 passed the class (and most of them had already taken calculus in one form or another). If you want to pass this class you need to be ready to dedicate some serious time and effort to doing so.
She's unnecessarily harsh with grading and does not explain or go over the tests at all. Her attitude is that it's not her problem to teach you (or respond to emails). When she did respond she was rude and standoffish. I got the sense that she enjoyed giving bad grades - like she hates her job and her students. Take Abdelbaki - the best!
I took MTH 173 honors and i thought she was really easy. The test don't have any new material, everything that she teaches has a reason. make sure to understand everything from beginning because youll need it to do better towards the end. Expect to spend hours. she's not really helpful yet if you ask individually she will be.
first off, there is never going to be an "easy" math class, period. She's really nice, will answer your questions with no hesitation, she will personally email you if she notices you are not doing well and will offer strategies to do better and pass! She teaches super well, she goes over a lot of examples so you get the hang of it. complete hwpass
I took math 163 with her last year. We started with 25 or so students were left with 9 students and 3 or 4 people pass the class. I have straight A's but I barely pulled a C in her class. She take off points for things you won't even know about and play the card that she want you to be successful. By being hard grader.
I took an online class with her and failed the class. I never failed a class before. Some of the reviews are spot on my class started with 23 or some students and their were 4 of us left. If your assignments are one minute late it's 0. You will be surprised on how bad your grade will be on her tests. Questions are not from material you review.
She is very understandable and very straight forward when it comes to the lecture. All homework and textbook help are online which also helps you to figure out the concept. Would recommend her.
I just finished Math 152 online with her. I saw some reviews about extra credit when I asked her about extra credit there was none. If the homework and quiz is not done by due dates you get a 0. Exams were very hard and grades come in 50% to 60%. Class start with around 30 students and their was 8 of us left. Don't take her .
on the first day of class... I have never done so much work! I was already so overwhelmed! She goes over the material way too fast... and why go over new material before taking a quiz, this class was stressful and it was only week 2.
She is nice and asks people if they have questions, but I am not very good at math so I still dont understand what she says. She is very boring too because she justs makes us practice and expects us work for 2 hours straight. Her tests are not hard, I just scored 70's on every one even though I put studied an hour each day for this class. Not good.
I took Dr. Macrina for 173 and again for 277. She is a wonderful professor. Her notes are extremely easy to understand and she assigns relevant homework problems. The tests come directly from the notes and homework. She also gives extra credit problems on the tests up to 10 percent. Extremely nice professor. Would recommend her to anyone!
Do not take this class if you want to do so much work. Quizzes every week and a bunch if exams. Hard class and I'm barely passing.
Dr. Macrina isn't the best teacher out there but she isn't horrible. Exams are hard because she asks logical questions like its physics and you can't even use a graphing calculator. There's a lot of homework which barely effects your grade, thus exams are important and you need study EVERYTHING. But she knows the material. Luckily, passed with a B
I like math because you don't have to analyze much, with her you have. Her classes are easy to understand because the whole class is solve problems from a worksheet but in the test you have to explain things, graphs FOR EVERYTHING. She does not give extra credit or help. If you are really good at math it won't be a problem but if you are average...
Great teacher, unnecessarily hard. Do not take her. Can teach the material really well, so you will actually learn it. Come test time, the test is on steroids and is so much harder, without a calculator lol. You can never use a calculator on an exam, but in class she uses it to do problems.
She's definitely a harder professor, but she is willing to help you if you ask. Tests make up 90% of your grade (maybe 80% if you're in honors), so you need to study for those! The only extra credit opportunities are attached to the end of your tests (like bonus questions), so make sure you leave time at the end to complete or at least attempt them
She is not a bad teacher. She grades the test really hard. Her exams are not hard if you actually understand Calculus. She doesn't curve tests or give extra credits. She gives lots and lots of examples in class which helps your practice. The homework has 100 questions counts as 20% and 5 tests counts as 80%. I got nothing higher than 75 on her test
She is very knowledgeable in calculus and when you get to higher level maths, that is the most important thing in a professor. You learn from worksheets and the grade is completely on tests that are challenging. You need to practice and understand the concepts. I didn't put in as much effort as I should've and got a D but you should take her.
Ms. Macrina was the best math professor I have ever taken. She has guided notes during the lecture. You have to do a ton of math labs as graded homework. The tests are challenging, but if you do the review, go over sections from mymathlab you don't understand, you will do just fine.
She doesn't explain the lesson very well, and the exercises were not helpful at all, I was not prepared for the exams, and I failed. Which sucks, I guess if you can understand math even with a professor that gives out terrible exams than you will be ok. My advice? Take her only if there are no other professors available.
This professor does not care, she linked khan academy and didn't teach the entire time. She doesn't give extensions regardless of circumstance and does not explain very well when you email her for help. Only reason to take her is there isn't a better option.
It's a tough class, that should be obvious. You're going to have to put in work. If you don't understand something you have every opportunity to ask for help during or after class. Go look on YouTube if you have to but asking is the best way explain what you're having trouble with. I see a lot of reviews that sound like they didn't even try to ask.
You can tell that all the students that didn't do well or show initiative in/out of class and probably failed gave all the people who gave good reviews a thumbs down. She's a pretty good professor that goes over the subject material thoroughly. If you're going to have this much trouble at NOVA with a class that requires some work, oh boy.
What can I say, she is not too good at teaching calculus. I have been using Doctrina videos which have been really helpful and that's how I have been learning how to do some of the problems. She is not very good at using zoom and sometimes it's hard to read her writing.
Since this was an 8wk online class, I did not have Dr. Macrina give lectures but she responded to emails in a timely manner and made sure if I needed help she tried. BEWARE THIS CLASS IS HARD. Barely passed even though taken precalc in high school and gotten an easy A. Take it as full semester as there's lots of hw & 3 hard tests, and NO EXTRA CRED
I took this class over the summer hoping to get ahead on my fall courses. It was an 8wk async class. That being said, imo Dr. Macrina did the bare minimum. She had office hours one day a week, and expectations for upcoming tests/quizzes were very unclear. No extra credit. No lectures, just unhelpful youtube videos and powerpoints.
Took this class expecting it to be great but oh I was wrong. This professor was literally useless this whole entire time. Be ready to do everything yourself and teaching yourself. It seemed at times there was not even a professor for this class.
I went into this course knowing that it would be tough because it was an asynchronous online course with only 3 exams that make up 60% of your grade. The professor is utterly useless in providing feedback on assignments or exams. I could go on with how little she help with assignments. I'm surprised she's even paid for this.
She became my calculus II professor because the original professor had to leave for an emergency, but I noticed that she was a much harsher grader and would not post corrections, but she is willing to give feedback if you emailed her. I would have failed this class if I had her at the beginning of the semester. If you can choose another professor.
Not much to say, just a terrible class to be in. This is going to be the first class I will fail.
She is a terrible professor please do not take her I should have checked the review before taking this class this is my first time failing a math class.
She is rude. She has no problem giving you 0's on Hm and exams. In fact, the worst prof I have ever seen at NOVA Math department. Please stay away form this prof.
I'll be honest with you and tell you not to take this teacher if you want to have peace of mind. This is my first ever review and I can tell you that she as a teacher and a mentor is bad. This is a self study class so you're kind of on your own, but having understanding of students and being lenient is not qualities she has. So PLEASE DON'T DO IT!!
Exams are worth 60% of your grade, if you fail one say goodbye to your high gpa. She grades really harshly and gives no extra credit whatsoever, I failed my first exam and when asked about it gave trash feedback. Turned in a discussion post and because the title was wrong gave me 0's(final). Waste of time and money, TRUST ME, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER
would not except my
If I could go back in time, I would only change one thing about my educational career, and that is to not take this professor.
Took Calc II with her for an online summer course... I regret it. Insanely tough grader, no remorse or leniency for grading. Literally nitpicked all my assignments and gave no feedback. Seems like she doesn't want to help or teach at all. Had to withdraw. If you're left with not being able to take math or taking her, wait next semester for dif prof
I took her online class and I gives directions how to name files and when you do so she complains and does not provide her information so you can't even ask questions and she is a tough grader gives you 6 homework in a week with a Quiz (one handwritten and one on webassign) She is very test heavy, takes your points and does not explain why. SO bad
she's so rude and not helpful at all. a mistake like not submitting a paper the way she wants will cost you 50% of your grade on the assignment. so ruthless for what man???? like are you here to help me or torture me ???
Worst professor I've ever had in my life.
If you need an excuse to drop of out college, this is it.
Took her asynchronous- so I can't rate her lecture quality. Seemed like she curves tests by about 10%, and is a pretty lenient grader. However, she made effort to avoid communicating with students. She placed office hours at really inconvenient times on Monday. Be prepared to take Diff Eq with a friend - you'll especially need it for this class.
Never taking an asynchronous math class again. The exams were extremely difficult for no reason, especially the midterm. No amount studying would have been sufficient to prepare for it. No curves as far as I could tell. Ended with a C but was three quarters of a percent of getting a B :( The professor was responsive to emails.
Took this class online and it was a nightmare. The professor is a harsh grader with no leniency. Exams are 60% of the grade, and feedback is practically non-existent. Thankfully, unstuck AI helped me prepare and stay on top of the material.
Be careful Taking her, EXAMS ARE WORTH 70% OF YOUR GRADE. She is very merciful in some aspects. Tests are taken through honor lock. If you need feedback good luck. never got any feedback on my exams and you will have to self teach. HW HEAVY AND TEST heavy through aleks. quiz on aleks that r kinda easy.
