Really nice prof. A little unclear about what she wants out of assignments. Way too much required for the class. Between class, papers, and tutoring you seem to never have time for the readings.
Somewhat unclear expectations. Biggest issue: she thinks her way of thinking is the ONLY way of thinking which can interfere with a preservice teacher's ability to form their own opinions. Pushes back assignments for more time as necessary.
She is a very nice and helpful professor, but also unclear about what she expects from you in assignments. There is quite a bit of work, but she gives you great ideas that you can use later. I would recommend
Very unclear about assignments, but pushes back due dates when needed.... she has her favorites, and singles out students
I think she's great. She's enthusiastic, nice, funny, and knows a lot about what she does. Is kind of biased w/ her approaches sometimes and can be unclear about grading but i'd definitely sign up for her again, i think she has alot of good stufftoteach
new teacher at GV, very opinionated, if you do the work you will be fine, offers opportunities for revision on papers, unclear about assignments, kind of spaced out at times
She is a nice lady, but somewhat lazy. She is always moving due dates and grading large papers while in class. Very opinated, and unclear. On the other hand she prepairs you for life as a teacher. Filled with great ideas and teaching tips. Spaces out!
Super nice and willing to push back due dates if the class is having trouble. good teacher although as everyone else has said, it unclear what exactly she wants for a lot of assignments
She's a joke. If you aren't a favorite, forget it. She'll accuse you of things you haven't done and leave you with no way out. Biased, opinionated and extremely unprofessional. I'd kill myself before taking her again.
Very mixed opinion - very nice lady, and I got a lot of great ideas about teaching from her....however, she isn't very clear, and the class is a LOT of work on top of the tutoring. I also think she plays favorites, and I don't think I was one of them.
Very informative class, but unclear in her expectations. Must do really good on every assignment to get an A.
She definitely plays favorites. Expects way too much work ontop of the tutoring. I would not suggest her class.
YUCK!
she's a very nice lady. terribly easy grader. not much work, hardly any homework. BUT she plays favorites alot! I really got ticked off alot with her blatant fav. picking. She'd give a better grade to people she liked...no joke! take her for the A.
boring boring boring. not an easy grader. but she is very helpful and nice.
Easy grader for me = A-, but I think I was a favorite. If you arent, watch out. And She does not like questions and can make you feel dumb in front of class. Kinda fun class, but pointless
nice lady. easy grader...but she is very picky. make sure you show her work a few days before it is due..to make sure it is what she is looking for. i don't agree with her having "favorites", she liked everyone in our class just the same!!
One of the best profs I've had! Lots of work - but you learn a lot! Excellent ideas for the classroom. Also teaches you to write better yourself. Very helpful on papers/assignments. Hint: participate in class discussions.
Amy is a great prof! She knows exactly what she's teaching-and really prepares her students to be good teachers. If you keep up on the assignments she gives, you will be fine. If you try, you'll get an A while also getting alot from the class.
Amy is a good prof who really has a ton of knowledge to share! Research paper was scary but actually went very well. I enjoyed it onmce I had to do it. Start early if possible! Do your musings and field notes often! It's too easy to fall behind.
Obviously played favorites and her comments on her grading didn't match the grade she gave.
thinks hers is the only class your taking all semester.
Plays favorites. If you aren't fav. she doesn't have the time of day for you. She will blow you off. Thinks her class is the only class you are taking. Very easy to fall behind in if you don't stay on top of the assignments. To get a good grade speak up alot in class discussions. Get your name known
Her research paper is ridiculous! Its graduate level work in an undergrad class. She's uncaring toward students and piles the work on even during teacher assisting. She's rude, plays favorites and thinks her class is the only one people have. Do yourself a favor-take Sumner. Her paper is way easier!
Ugg, this class was the only bad thing about TA-ing. All the things ppl mentioned (plays favs, etc) are true. Its been nearly 4 months & she still doesnt seem to remember my name! Plus, she thinks she is an expert on Everything, thus she will rip your papers apart if it isn't what SHE thinks! AVOID!
Expects a lot, but has a lot of good information to pass along. Gives you a lot of ideas to use in teaching writing. You don't have to read for the class, but you do have to write a lot. Very nice and helpful.
250 pages of reading per week, a 20 page paper, and she DOES NOT GIVE A's.
Horrible, horrible. She seems nice, but don't let her fool you. Unless you kiss up every day, you'll be lucky ot get a B. She is very biased and pushes back due dates so she can grade in class. Very lazy. Not a good role model. If she doesn't like you, watch out, she'll find a way to make you suffer. :(
For all you future teachers out there, this class is pretty helpful. The book is kind of pointless and didn't really relate to what we did in class. She has some good teaching ideas though. The assignments and stuff aren't too hard; my paper was total BS and I got an A on it.
Class not that hard. Really nice lady who doesn't give you lots of assignments. She seems to have some favorites, which was fine by me, but may bother some of you.
If you do the work the class is not too difficult. Be sure to do all of your observation and tutoring hours because she does check to make sure you do them. She's good but if you can get another professor for this class take them instead.
She is not helpful and makes you feel stupid. She plays favorites...but is EASY if you are on her good side...if not BEWARE
Amy Masko is the worst professor to walk to face of this earth. She is completely unfair. You will tell her something and then she'll screw you later because she says that you did not tell her anything. She plays favorites. DO NOT take her, you will regret it!
Extremely unclear on expectations for assignments. Opinionated. Her class was more a glorified book club then a class.
Knows a great deal about writing theory, but didn't seem to understand the ghastly amount she expected of us in a Spring/Summer term. Was not extremely clear with assignment expectations. I worked about 30 hours per week OUTSIDE of class to do my best. It was tough. And lastly...not extremely personable.
I really liked this prof. She is knowledgeable about the field and very helpful. The one complaint I had was how hard she graded. I often felt like her grading was overly harsh. Oh, and attendance is mandatory. Not a bad prof if you have to take this class.
The only people who don't like Prof. Masko are people who don't get into the subject. 392 is "language and power" and we had a great time. I think she did like people who had visited her and talked in class, but those are not overly high expectations and the grading was reasonable. Take her- she is super sweet.
Amy was pretty helpful and wanted to teach the students in her class. Her assignments were kind of vague sometimes. It was a lot to pack into 6 weeks!! We did not get to a lot of things because we just ran out of time... She was pretty quick at getting papers back. Overall, pretty good way to start my Master's Program.
LOVE loved loved Amy as a prof. She made you do the work and do the reading, but I learned so much in her class. I took her for several classes because I really enjoy the way she teaches. I'd recommend YOU to take her as well!
Lots of work but you get a lot of great ideas. Helpful and kind.
Aweful teacher, stay away from her. She has her favorites and it will reflect on your grade. I advise you to pick another teacher for english 308.
Amy is incredibly personable in class, but her standards for projects are nearly impossible. There is always something wrong with what you turn in. She assigns loads of projects and homework. I think she forgets her students are taking other classes! If you ask a lot of questions and turn everything in on time, you should do okay.
Masko was very friendly and funny, learned a lot of useful information from her class. She is quite a hard grader though, there is always something wrong with what you turn in. If you are okay with that, you'll do fine. I would probably take her again.
Very nice lady, but hard grader. Would recommend, bc I learned a lot of useful info.
I thought Masko was a great prof. Very knowledgeable & gives you a lot of good ideas for when you're a teacher. If you follow her grading rubrics you will have no problem getting A's. Not as hard of a grader as everyone says. Doesnt choose favorites if you volunteer a thought or idea once in a while. Take her for 308.
Awesome professor! This class was a blast! You are allowed 2 absences (excused or unexcused), but you won't need them because you'll want to be in class every day. There is a lot of reading but it never felt overwhelming. You will need all of the books. Easy grader. Midterm is a paper and final is half open-note/open-book. Take this class!
She expects you to be there no excuse is accepable however she canceled class 2 hours before because her daughter was sick and for inauguration. If you expect your students to show up you need to show up as well. She has good ideas but her idea is alway the right one no room for anyone else to have a good idea.
Amy is the best professor I have had at Grand Valley. She is very friendly and has some great ideas for students going into teaching. Make sure you pick a good group for your group projects because she does tend to grade pretty hard on those. Take her if you can!!!
nice person but I'm still not sure how I feel about her teaching style. She is very knowledgeable about her field. Could go either way on recommendation...
Master students have high expectations for professors-WELL FORGET IT WITH THIS ONE. She?s completely unknowledgeable, unprepared, unprofessional, simple-minded, and biased. This was a writing class, but all we talked about were black/white issues. She had her favorites (the brown nosers that were too scared to question her idiotic thinking).
THE WORSE PROFESSOR I EVER HAD-She had no idea what or how to teach. She was never prepared and taught about whatever she wanted-didn?t follow syllabus. I learned nothing-WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY! Never take her-unless you want to hear about multi-cultural issues(not what class was about either). BAD
I liked Amy, even though I got an F in her class because I missed 7 class periods. She isn't very understanding in that aspect but I guess who could blame her. The books we used are dumb but I feel like that's a given with any ENG307 teacher. She tells funny personal stories. Fairly tough grader. Interesting lady though.
Fantastic professor, but hard grader. I learned so much in this class! We read great books and had great discussions. Knows her field!
The class is not that hard, but it is a lot of work! She expects you to write a ton. This should be a SWS class. Funny professor. Very helpful, and interesting. I really liked this class. And I'm a better writer than when I started. And she expects you to use theory.
Loved, loved, loved this class! I learned so much and read so many great books. Prof. is nice.
Unorganized. Syllabus goes out the window after the first couple weeks. Extremely unclear about expectations for any given assignment. Unfair grader.
I was looking forward to this class, but after taking it I feel like I learned nothing. She has you read 100 pages for every class, and then we don't discuss it. The syllabus doesn't apply after the first couple of weeks, and she doesn't make any connections to anything else we've learned in class. VERY DISORGANIZED!!!
The syllabus was not very helpful. Did not bother reading the books after the first two weeks. I left everyday annoyed and wondered what we did for 50 mins. Easy grade received just have to put up with the boring classes.
Masko teaches similar material in each of her classes. I was disappointed with what she covered in class because it didn't match the syllabus or the class description in the course catalog. I would not take her again. Went to every class, got all A's, and she still gave me a B+. She has very strong opinions and will tell you them!
Not the most organized professor which makes her class aggravating.
Super easy class - no tests! A few group projects and individual assignments, but they are spaced out throughout the semester so they are easy. There are a ton of reading assignments, but you can get an A in the class without reading a single one of them. Prof is disorganized, never comes to class prepared and repeats the same big ideas each class.
Amy Masko isn't the most organized teacher but she does show emotion to her students. Every day before the class begin she will ask how is everyone transitioning into college. Going off her syllabus will have you confuse because she constantly extending due dates. However if your not proficient in reading or analyzing texts take Amy's class!
I had Amy for my freshmen year and i was glad i did. Showed that she cared about you and your future, not only your academic, which made the class's environment very friendly and open. However, not an organized professor. Be sure to check the syllabus often and remind her
Masko is the type of professor that you either love or hate. She is disorganized and sometimes unclear, but she is knowledgeable and enthusiastic and caring. There is a lot of reading and you don't get quizzed on the readings weekly, but the books are actually super helpful and informative, and the final is based off of them.
This professor is great at her job! She is very understanding and will help you with anything if you reach out. For example, when I slept through my final she let me retake it after class. You can really tell she cares about her students. She also makes sure to connect her class teachings with real-life situations. Organization could be better thou
One of the most disorganized professors i have ever had. She decided to change the final exam 3 weeks before the end of the semester and gave us little to no instruction on what to do for it. She also added a "quiz" that was supposed to be the week before finals and decided to change it to the day of our final along with another project.
Professor Masko is really caring about her students and shows it. She would motivate students and start off the class with a stretch excercise. She is more on the organized side. We did not stick to her syllabus. Sometimes things were not explained well. Overall she is a good caring teacher, she is just unorganized
There are a few of good qualities about Masko, her knowledge about AAE students being one of them. However the class was intended to be focused on culture diversity yet you will only hear one side, one culture & if you disagree or challenge anything, you will be wrong. There are also few points total, and she marks down on everything!
Maybe it was because we were online, but I really liked her. She had things mostly organized, but some things could have been more clear with expectations. It was a lot of work, but it was a 6 wk class. The group projects were a nightmare in an online setting, and she always picked grades apart. But she was nice and responsive and knew her info!
Dr. Masko is such an amazing professor and will help anyone if they ask. In all of her emails, she stated that she wants to help so we get this material. Since this class was online, it was different than in person. But if you have her for online, she is very organized with weekly checklists. I would definitely take her again, I enjoyed her class
I am halfway through the semester with her and she is the most unorganized and irritating prof I have ever had. She makes AT LEAST 3 mistakes EVERY WEEK when posting things on Blackboard. If she doesn't post an assignment on time, she doesn't even extend the due date to give us a fair amount of time to get it done. She's a mess of a professor.
The most unorganized professor I have ever had. Gets pretty rude if you ask for clarifications, especially over email. Someone has to email her every week because she always has errors in everything. Also, she has told us that she gives us 1/3, 2/3 on assignments not bc we deserve that grade but bc she wants us to read her comments... fair, right?
This professor was so incredibly unorganized and demeaning towards students. If you have a question good luck! She gets upset when students are confused and will normally respond with a rude email that belittles you. No matter what, she is always right and the student is always wrong. The only thing I learned in this course was how not to teach.
If you can take another professor make sure you do. She assigns an insane amount of work and is so unorganized. She had to be reminded to post things we needed for the week every single week. Her expectations are high and the work load is overwhelming & she doesn't seem to care that students are taking classes other than just hers in a semester.
Taking your capstone during a pandemic completely online is no joke. We barely got to meet but every time we did she was so helpful and emphasized how proud she was of us all the time. You can tell how passionate she is about English and education and equality and literacy. She instilled confidence in me that I needed for this class.
Very unorganized and failed to post multiple assignments without reminders. She talked lots about her workload this semester and how she had lots going on completely disregarding that many of us were also taking other classes. Assignments were due on Sundays, and some weeks weren't posted until Thursday. Didn't put any grades in until the last week
Dr. Masko shows she cares for you in her class however she is very disorganized. She makes it hard to follow what she expects. She expects a lot of reading to be done and makes you buy so many books that you never use. It was her first time teaching this class, so I do think she did a good job, especially given her personal life.
Dr. Masko was a great prof. The content was clear and understood. Homework was more than manageable. Textbooks were a waste as they were not needed. She also has not entered even 1/2 our grades and it's finals week- so I don't have a true understanding of what my grade is. Given her personal life it's understanding, but frustrating.
Amy tried her best in my class, however, she made us buy over $200 worth of textbooks and books that we maybe used twice at most. She was very scatter brained and used pre-recorded videos from being online in 2020. She did not grade anything until after finals as well.
Dr. Masko is a mess. I understand that it is her first time teaching this course, but she is completely disorganized in every class. She takes so long to grade all assignments (had to wait until midterms to see anything in Blackboard)
I previously rated this professor much lower but am reevaluating. I felt that she gave us assignments and expected us to just know how to do things without any direct instruction. If you hate poor organization, don't take her. However, the assignments did give me useful skills. I would not take her again, however, because it was very stressful.
Do not take her. I took her for 201 and thought she was the most unorganized but since I got an A I decided to take her for 301. She explained nothing and expected the class to know everything. She had nothing in the grade book till this week and gave me lots of 0's on things I reached out to her about. She wrote me a nasty comment on an assignment
I was honestly scared to take this class based on reviews but she was not bad at all. Yes she does make you buy a lot of books and you use them for a short time but I did get a lot out of this class. She is a little unorganized here and there but if you are transparent with her it works out in your favor. It was easy and informative.
Only 2 absences were allowed in this class before your grade was affected but nothing useful was ever taught in lectures. There's not too many homework assignments, but each one takes an extremely long time to do. Required readings every single week. She is not understanding at all if you need to miss class either.
Overall the class was good, but there was a breakdown in communication. The comments on papers were borderline mean and grading criteria didn't always reflect what was on the syllabus. She was very passionate and I did learn, just felt like I was jumping through alot of unnecessary hoops, and alot of the time lectures were long personal tangents.
Very unprofessional and would leaves rude comments when grading. Unclear expectations and would blame you for it.
very rude and not understanding at all. Made many students late to their next class because tutoring went too long. She is not nice and expects students to just know what do do, and doesn't explain anything. Don't take any class with her.
Our professor passed away and she took over with only four weeks left in the semester and changed everything and we were all completely unprepared. She's a good teacher but she's incredibly rude and completely disregards the individual pace or needs of all her students.
Given the circumstances of the class, I wouldve expected a little more leniency. Prof Masko was very demanding and nitpicky. She also never responded to my emails when I needed help. She would pick on people who were talking, which made me feel like I was back in high school, and that is the last thing I want from a college professor.
Dr. Masko was an excellent professor and carries much knowledge in the area of English. If you are a good student who is on top of your work, you'll do great as well as she will work with you. Her lectures are beneficial and I feel like I have learned a lot. Many of the negative reviews surprise me, but then again, you need to be willing to learn.
took eng 401 for my summer course. it was 6 weeks of absolute torture. the amount of work is ridiculous and only a select handful of the readings and homework were useful . never have I ever cried over a english class before but do yourself a favor and do not take this class in the summer and don't take this professor.
