Nice lady but the monotone has got to go! Lots of reading but an interesting class.
Really nice and tries to give examples from her own experience. Interesting class, but boy is it hard to stay awake in her class. I wouldn't recommend it. She has such a monotone, relaxing voice and she just reads from her power points. So ridiculous.
Good class. Take her if you can.
good teacher and good class. not a lot of work- just a little bit of reading. study powerpoints a little bit and tests will be easy. it is actually an interesting subject. i recomend this class.
So easy...you just have to go to class and the test comes straight from the notes. Easiest gen ed...must take this!
very nice lady and willing to help. pretty interesting class.A lot of reading, but study powerpoints and skim the reading before test. Fairly easy GenEd.
boring....very boring...interesting subject, yet it's still boring....
Tests you on obscure details, must bascially memorize all the readings and notes to do get an A on the tests, other than that she is a nice lady but she speaks monotone and it gets pretty boring sometimes, altough it is an interseting topic.
This is my most boring class! I fall asleep many days due to her extreme monotone voice. It is very hard for me to wake up and want to go to this boring class. Tests do come from notes and readings. Sometimes she appears to have no idea what she is talking about and simply spits out definitions.
Interesting material but...BORING textbook...lots of reading...monotone voice...in-class films...a recipe for a good nap! and it's so politically correct it makes me want to gag. but it's not hard!
I only took this course for the cluster 4 gen ed, but it turned out to be very interesting. Lots of reading, but the articles are very interesting. Tests are multiple choice/True-false. Fair. Class discussion on topics is encouraged. If you have an interest in other cultures at all, take this class
Nice lady, and loves her job but has an extremely monotone voice which leads to nap time every class. Lots of reading but not necessary. Books are boring as hell. As long as you copy her powerpoints, tests are def A or B. Exams are not cummulative. Overall she's a pretty good teacher/easy class.
this was my first class of the day, so i had to sit up front to stay awake. monotone voice and doesn't take attendance, but the slideshows aren't on blackboard and the tests reflect them. good amount of reading. films are really interesting. the class was more interesting than i thought--def take it
Dr. Paugh is very helpful and interesting. You learn about her own work in Dominica too. Very interesting class.
the class is pretty interesting- films, lectures, class discussions contribute to variety. the readings are pretty good. the tests aren't that bad, most are pretty much guaranteed atleast a B. i would recommend her.
Study the notes and skim the readings before tests and you are fine. She is approachable and easy to understand. Sometimes the class is interesting. Provides lots of random facts. Fairly easy GenEd
Good class. Lectures are the basis of the tests. Study notes and and skim chapters before tests and you'll do fine.
She's a good teacher. She doesnt have an attendance policy, but it's worth it to go to class 'cause the tests are right from her notes. Keep up with the readings; there's a book you have to read, I just waited until she gave the descusion questions to read it. I'd recommend her. Easyily I have a B.
really really miserably boring class. had it at 8 am and fell asleep during all of the movies. still, she is a good professor and knows her stuff. her tests are reasonable but there is a LOT of reading (loong articles). i would def recommend her especially if you are interested in anthropology.
The most boring class EVER. It's very very difficult to stay awake. But, it's a reasonable amount of work and the tests aren't bad. You don't need to even buy the textbook, the tests are straight from the notes. BUT she doesn't post her notes online, so go to class. Nice lady though.
Come to class! Tests are word for word from her notes and readings, so do the readings too. She's pretty easy if you're willing to do the work and study. Try not to take the 8AM she turns down the lights practically asking you to sleep through her class.

Really interesting class. it was hard at 8 in the morning in grafton stoval theater, no desks and big room. but she really knows her stuff and talks about her own research. tests are very fair. good class overall.
TAKE HER! She is awesome! She is so happy about everything. She takes notes for you and posts study guides for just about everything on blackboard. Very Easy. Only 3 exams including the final! There is a book that you have to read. It's about 250 pages, but it's interesting. Have fun with he
Had her at 12:30 and still fell asleep in class....very nice lady, interesting subject matter...put in minimal work and got a B...her own feild work was VERY interesting
Horrible way of teaching, makes class boring
i loved her! shes knows her stuff and while class can be boring (esp at 8am) its sooooooooo easy. dont buy the book, just go to class and take the notes...tests are straight from the power points...impossible not to get a B.
Talks to you like you're a five year old, lots of notes, lots of power point. Knows her stuff, though, and the class is relatively painless. She's one of the better gened teachers out there, take the class with a friend.
Great professor, class is half boring half interesting, depending on what you like. She's a sweet lady and prepares you extremely well for tests. No problem getting a B+, just follow the study guides.
Really good teacher who knows what she is talking about. Her notes are clear, and her tests aren't bad although you do need to study. If you read the book (no need to take notes on reading) and take notes an A is possible. Go to class though because she does in class assignments.
Dr. Paugh is very sweet and really great when you go to her office hours. Her class isn't the easiest, but all in all she is a fair grader and she really wants her students to love anthropology - she loves to talk about her own field work which was interesting...take her, she's good.
Great professor! Her class isnt easy but if you like the subject and pay attention in class you'll be okay. She is very helpful if you go to her during her office hours!
Very sweet professor--knowledgeable and tries to make it interesting. I would definitely recommend her
Really really sweet professor. Interesting lectures. GO TO CLASS and you will definately pass the class. Fun movies. Great speaker. Tells about research in Dominican Republic.
Prof Paugh is a great teacher! She has powerpoint slide to take notes from so you don't miss anything she says. The reading she assigns is really important becasue it will show up on the test regardless of whether it was discussed in class. Her tests are very fair, but you need to study. Classes are intersting and not too boring.
awesome professor!! reallt knows what she is talking about and explains this everything. SHe is really sweet and easy going. you have to go to class because she doesnt post her slides and she gives exercises in class, but she makes the material really interesting!! she know her stuff, I highly recommend her!
She does an amazing job of making assignments and grading clear. She is very knowledgable about the topic, she has first hand experience, and she has a good personality (aka not boring). Homeworks aren't bad. Attendance is randomly taken via in class exercises, which are easy. Tests are straight forward. A good prof, take her.
I took this class as a junior for some extra credits. She might as well have held up a sign on the first day that said "Welcome freshmen, have a free A." And she's nice and funny to boot.
I love Amy! She's a great prof. I took her ganth class and one of her special topics classes. Amazing classes. I definitely recommend her to anyone interested in Anth or anyone who wants a pretty simple gen ed.
Extremely nice and no attendence policy. It's a relatively easy class but I couldn't stand taking it as late as I did. Pretty interesting material; definitely recommend.
She is an excellent professor! Not only is she fair, but her classes are interesting, and all the notes are put on PowerPoint so it is easy to follow & take notes. Tests are multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and things like that- but they are easy if you go to class & take notes. I loved her & her class overall.
She really knows her stuff and her class is great. I learned a lot and this was one of the most interesting classes i've taken at JMU. You watch a lot of movies, lots of readings..basically homework every night but it's definitely worth it.
Professor Paugh is awesome, and always willing to help students! Attendance isn't mandatory but she has group activities worth points, and doesn't post power points so you NEED to go to class. Keep up with the material/readings and you should get at least a B. She has a lot of field experience, and the class is pretty interesting!
Professor Paugh talks on topics that should only take 3 minutes to cover but somehow she finds a way to turn that into 10 minutes of rambling. Make sure to bring something like suduko to lectures to keep you from falling asleep. Her class is based on all memorization,no analytical thinking... Pretty much taught at a high school level course.
Amy is a very good teacher. She knows what she is talking about. There are assigned readings from the book and articles online. There are easy assignments. The notes are all powerpoint. Movies are frequent. There is no attendence policy, however there are in-class assignments that count towards participation points. The tests are pretty easy.
Really liked her to start with, then progressively less as the class went on. Don't clash with her personal opinion or she'll lower your grade because of it. Tests started out easy, then got harder pretty fast. One of the readings is awful, but the others are interesting.
she is very nice and you think you're going to get like a 100 in her class and then you take the first exam and you're like wtf. she makes her exams A LOT harder than they need to be for a gen ed. you actually have to read and go to class not an easy A but doable.
Really nice and encourages discussion. Must do the readings to do well on the assignments and exams. Projects were interesting and worth the effort to take the time to do. Attendance mandatory in order to get participation credit. Overall a really great professor and an interesting class.
Worthless teacher at JMU. Study guides are worthless, her discussions in class are worthless. The only good thing about the class is that we get to watch movies. Just read the book and articles. Tests are way too difficult for a GENED course.
She's very nice, I recommend. Powerpoints are not posted so take very god notes. Always fill out exam study guides. Don't miss class because she does in-class assignments that count toward participation. Make sure you keep up with the readings because the exams focus on them. Always go to office hours because she is very approachable and helpful.
She's a nice teacher and not extremely difficult. Tests are tough and I spend a lot more time on this class than I would like for a gen ed compared to my major classes. It is fairly interesting but be prepared to read a lot. Tests are very about very precise info despite covering a lot of material. Make sure you answer questions very specifically.
would not recommend this class. it was way too hard for a gened. paugh is very nice and the class is very interesting and although I did enjoy it, I spent so long studying and barely made a B. if you're looking for an easy A, do not take this class. she also will give random in class assignments and if you're not there you get a 0 for participation
Dr. Paugh is an amazing professor she knows a lot about linguistic anthropology and is an exceptionally nice person. She doesn't let you walk all over her but she's so nice and intelligent and her lectures were always interesting. I definitely recommend this class.
Dr. Paugh is super nice and knows a lot about what she teaches. There is a lot of reading and you have to study to get a good grade on tests but I would definitely taking this class.
Her lectures weren't hard but you do have to go to get the notes because her lecture doesn't follow the textbook and she doesn't post her powerpoints. She does care and puts real effort into the class and is willing to help. The tests weren't hard but a lot of "pick the best answer". She has a couple simple projects that help boost grades.
Grades: 3 exams, 3 homework assignments, 1 (easy) project, 1 quiz, handful of in-class assignments graded for completion. Posts study guides for tests and TA's host review sessions before test. Assigned reading and lectures can vary sometimes. Rules: laptop use allowed. Personality: passionate about subject, especially linguistic aspects.
Dr. Paugh is such a sweet woman. She gives 3 tests, 3 homework assignments, and 1 quiz. They rarely come up in class, but you do need to do the extra readings from the textbook and from canvas because they are mentioned on exams. As long as you read and review your notes the exams are easy. She's a great lady and this class is a pretty easy A
Dr. Paugh is a very kind, caring professor. Her passion for her work makes learning so much easier, and I personally found the material really interesting. If you do the readings, you'll be fine. Tests are straightforward, as are homework assignments, so no surprises there. I would love to take her for anything else she teaches, she's that good!
She is an amazing professor. If you need to take ANTH 195 take her. I never skipped a class and maintained a A/B all semester. Very easy class. There are 3 tests, a few homework assignments that take up to an hour, and 1 quiz on a book that I got an A on by just skimming the chapters. Take her!
This isn't a show up and pass class, but if you put in some effort you will do just fine. If you do the readings you should get an A or B. The class is 3 tests (not cumulative) and a quiz on a book you read that is pretty easy. Overall she is a great teacher that is passionate and loves what she does. But you will have to read for each class.
Really liked Professor Paugh. I felt very comfortable expressing my questions and opinions in the class environment she created, and very comfortable when talking with her. Her class was very interesting, as she explained concepts really well and was always in a positive mood. Tests & homework were fair. Want to go to Dominica with her!
This class was so easy... I honestly wish it was a little more challenging. I barely did any of the readings and still got an A on her midterm, which was fill-in-the-blank and short answer. Short papers, simple enough projects. Easy grader, sweet person.
Great teacher and person but its ridicously hard to get an A for a Gen ed......... Tests were very hard even after studying the study guide. She gets really off track and the class can get so boring. This class is NOT AN EASY A.
Professor Paugh is great! She has very clear lectures and notes and although attendance isn't mandatory, she occasionally has participation exercises and the notes are all from class. Some reading but the chosen books aren't dry so they aren't too bad to get through. As long as you get the notes and read when necessary you should do well!
Maybe its just because I took her for a gened, but it was almost annoying how she assumed we all cared about the really niche groups when most people were only in the class to get gened credit
Professor Paugh was beyond interesting. Her fieldwork and her lectures really makes you care about the class, even though it is a gen-ed. She picks super interesting groups to study but READ THE TEXTBOOK because she will put word for word questions on the test about the books. She is really caring passionate and it makes the class fun.
The class isn't super hard, but you definitely need to have an interest in it if you're going to do well. You have to work for an A-- Paugh expects you to know your stuff. Need to go to class and do the readings to do well on the discussion questions. Dr. Paugh is super nice and friendly and clearly has a passion for the course.
Dr. Paugh is amazing an passionate about her subject. Although I don't always agree with her grading, she is extremely friendly and all you have to do is talk with her. I expected it to be an easier class, but I definitely had to work hard for the grade I wanted. I would recommend her to anyone, whether they are looking for an easy prof.
Dr. Paugh is one of the BEST professors I have ever had. Her class on language and culture is super interesting, the lectures are interesting, and there's only a slightly above average amount of homework. She is funny and really easy to learn from. Cannot recommend her enough! Good for a gen ed
Professor Paugh makes you work for a good grade. Not an easy gen ed at all. She grades very hard on the homework. You have three tests that are 25% each of your grade and if you do bad on one of them good luck on trying to bring your grade up. Very nice professor who is passionate about her job, but a very hard course to get an A.
Dr. Paugh's class is very organized. The average on the tests were not extremely high, hovering around a 80 for each test, but I have no idea why the averages were so low. If you do the short readings and come to class there is no way you should get less than a 90%. She explains things very clearly and its a fun class! Def take her.
Makes you work for it, not an easy gen ed. Caring professor and definitely knows what shes talking about, but makes the tests too hard.
Mrs. Paugh is very laid back and chill, but she's a very firm believer in lectures and reading the textbook. Her lectures get boring sometimes because she has a monotone voice and talks A LOT. Remember to read the textbook pages assigned because those questions will be on the tests.
Paugh is so nice and helpful, and all the work tells you exactly what you need to do to get a 100%. She made the subject really interesting and obviously cares about her students a lot. She answers emails quickly and encourages students to email her any questions they have, whether about hw or before tests. Would definitely recommend.
Taken in four weeks in the summer and spent about 6 hours a day on it. Readings almost daily, with guiding questions provided (common with this professor). She makes very clear what you need to know and what the requirements are on the tests, projects, and discussion posts. Even w/o online lectures she was very engaging and the class was worth it.
I really do not understand her grading criteria. I feel like she takes off random points which can be frustrating. Otherwise, since it was online it was generally easy but have to put in the work if you want to get an A. Interesting class though, she is super nice and accommodating for online class.
I enjoyed this Prof and found this class interesting. I took it online and we had the same stuff due every week: watch a short lecture, read from the textbook, take a five question quiz, watch a video, and do a discussion post. The tests are straight from the readings and videos, and Prof Paugh is very knowledgable on the topic. A very sweet lady.
Very kind and there to help you succeed in any way she can. Very knowledgable. Lots of reading and content but assignments are not too hard. Very understanding and more than willing to work with/help us with pandemic related obstacles during the semester.
Prof Paugh is really sweet and understanding. You will pass as long as you read and watch the vids. Dont be afraid to reach out to her if you dont understand something. Every monday there was a quiz and discussion board post due which would come from readings and or videos.
Professor Paugh was a great professor to have for an online gen ed. She made it so we could do our work asynchronously but also offered synchronous meetings for those who wanted/needed more in depth conversation. This class was also pretty interesting and the books have a lot of good info to open your eyes to different global perspectives!
Dr. Paugh and this class are the reason I might switch my major to Anthropology. The class was incredibly interesting, so easy to understand, and challenged my view of the world. Quizzes and exams are easy if you put in a bit of effort. Dr. Paugh is incredibly passionate, always eager to discuss the material, and so knowledgable. A must take.
Dr. Paugh is super kind and her course is really interesting. There's some assigned textbook reading, and an ethnographical book to read towards the end of the semester. She makes the material super easy to understand, and her tests are super straight-forward. There are small in-class activities she grades on, and regardless I recommend showing up!
Her lectures are important for tests but can be boring at times, there are in-class graded activities (she excuses 1), the chapter readings aren't hard, test is 50/50 lectures and textbook material. Take her if you have the chance, the material is interesting and she tries to incorporate class discussion. It's a very relaxed setting.
Dr. Paugh is a gracious professor who presents opportunities for questions and asks for feedback about how to improve classes. There are weekly textbook readings and quizzes, three exams (no final), and the class is lecture-heavy which can get tedious but the material is very interesting! Class activities and documentaries were also enjoyable.
Professor Paugh is one of the sweetest faculty members I've met so far. However, If you do not retain information very well just by listening it may be hard to keep up in class without writing down every single word that is said. I definitely think her teaching and overall care for her students is worth the extra work though.
Dr. Paugh's class is not as great as everyone says she is. You have to listen to every word of the lecture to even have a shot at passing her exams and the weekly reading quizzes are impossible to find in the textbook. Spontaneous in class group activities are challenging and most of the students genuinely do not care about the class.
sweet person BUT has very high expectations for a level 2 class. has weekly chapter quizzes and some weeks it's up to three chapters. not only did she have a final paper, BUT she also had a final presentation and final essay exam. lectures were super boring, her ppt had very little info on them and it seemed like the class was pretty repetitive.
This class is incredibly boring, to no fault of her own. Exams were online, but incredibly hard. Most of the questions are not related to what she lectured. If you like applied courses, then this one's for you.
This professor was so easy she was super sweet, lecture heavy but it does not really pertain to much to the quizzes and exams. Everything is online and open note, also attendance is not mandatory just make sure to check the syllabus for activity days, "in person only".
super fun and easy class to take. primarily online with the exams and quizzes. I would take it 100 percent again, and there is no attendance. She's super caring and easy to reach out to if needed
Took asynchronously. Professor Paugh is super nice! I didn't get to sit in class with her, but her lectures were accessible and she made sure to provide transcripts. She communicates well and gets back with grades pretty fast, which is nice in an online class. If anthropology isn't your jam, I recommend this class since she makes it interesting!
Professor Paugh's class is an interesting yet relaxed experience. The lectures can be dry, but the textbook readings and in-class activities make up for it. For study prep, unstuck ai is a great tool alongside the free textbook.
She is super caring and passionate about what she is teaching however the topics can be a bit boring. Had a quiz every week but in the last two weeks we started reading a new book and there was 8 quizzes, 4 were due on one day and 4 on another, it felt like a bit much. Overall this was a easy class to take for a gen ed.
Nothing special to say, typical summer class. literally only quizzes and discussion posts. There is one activity thats a family tree as well If you turn everything in on time, youll be fine. I took this to raise my GPA over the summer. I would recommend.
Dr.Paugh was a very kind professor!! She gave study guides/guiding questions for EVERYTHING which really helps you study for her exams. Her exams are at home with lockdown browser + webcam but as long as you study properly they are very easy. She is very passionate about what she teaches and her class was very entertaining!
This professor is one of my favorites at JMU!! She gives out study guides for everything which is SUPER helpful. As long as you keep up with the textbook + study guides you will do well. The subject is also very entertaining.
Professor Paugh is very caring and wants her students to succeed, which is clear from the way she teaches. Although the subject can sometimes be a bit boring, she makes her classes enjoyable. Most of your grade comes from the exams, as the in class activities aren't weighted, so your final grade really depends on how well you do on those tests.
i thought this class would be easy... no this class is not. save yourself and don't take. this is not an easy gen ed
Professor Paugh's class is easy; it's just very boring and test-heavy. Her exams are at home with the lockdown browser + webcam. Your grade is based on how you do on the test rather than how you do on one in-class assignment. The in-class assignments are basically how she does her attendance.
Professor Paugh is amazing. Three tests, two book quizzes, and in class assignments, so the amount of work is not a lot at all. Make sure to pay attention during the lectures and read the textbook, if you do that you will get a good grade.
