She's pretty bad at teaching. Just follows the textbook completely. Though, I did like that she uses worksheets to help you get concepts. If you can understand how to do the homework, then you pretty much get an A in the class. She also gives extra credit for attendance.
She made a few mistakes/corrections during a few lectures but she's only human. She's very helpful if you visit her during her office hours and often gives subtle hints as to what might be on the test. I got an A in the class. The book is no fun reading, but with good notes and practice problems you should be fine. A LOT of extra credit chances!!!!
She is an easy teacher, she is friendly and helpful. I will say the class may be TOO easy. If you have the cojones to sit in the front two rows, you will ace.
By far my favorite teacher at north texas. She drops the lowest test grade at the end. She gives HW but you dont turn it in. (if you can do the HW, you can do the test EASY.) The material is still as easy as any chem but she really makes it simple. LOVE her.
Great teacher if you go to class and do the homework you will ace this class
Great teacher! She makes the class easy and explains everything very well. If you do the worksheets and homework she gives, it is very easy to get a good grade.
Amazing teacher. Tells you everything on the test before the test. Classy is optional but go for your benefit. I will never forget her. She made chemistry easy for me.
Seriously one of the best teachers you will ever have. If you show up and pay attention in class, she will do everything in her power to help you succeed. Very fair grader as well, will give you 9/10 points on short answer even if you get an entire part wrong. Wish I was a science major so I could take more of her classes.
She's a great professor. Easy A class. She makes chemistry very easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory, but it's extremely helpful because the tests are based on her lectures. She also gives out extra credit answers during lectures.
I absolutely LOVE Dr.Petros. I was never really taught Chem in H.S. so I was lost, but believe me when I say she will literally hand you the opportunity for an A. Shes amazing & is more than willing to help. She made me enjoy Chem. Def take her, you wont regret it!!
Dr. Petros is very bubbly and always excited which helps with the class atmosphere. This is def NOT an 'Easy A' class; it's CHEMISTRY for crying out loud! But she def has extra credit opportunities and SI Sessions to advocate an A. (I got an A by the way) The material is tough but you have to put it upon yourself to WANT to pass. It won't be given
Dr. Petros is a great professor. She actually makes chemistry easier to understand and her lectures are not boring. She also offers some extra credit opportunities. I got an A in this class and I thought it was pretty easy.
SPEECHLESS. What a great professor!! Took Chem 1420 in the spring n got an B! This class is a little difficult I must say but Dr. Petros makes it really exciting. Just make sure to get the book and take interest in the chapters and do everything she assigns(hw practice) and you my friend will get an A. Wish I would have tried harder bc its easy!!
VERY clear in lectures. Funny and entertaining. Always helps when someone needs it. She made Chemistry fun and I'm the kind of person who's usually stronger with Math as opposed to concepts! Made an A in the class and I will miss having her as a teacher! A joy to be around and makes even non-Chemistry majors understand Chemistry so well!
I definitely recommend her. She is an awesome teacher and really cares about her students. It's not a blowoff class but hard work should definitely get you an A.
I had Dr. Petros for both semesters of gen chem. I HIGHLY recommend taking her! She is enthusiastic, understanding, and truly cares about her students. If you attend the lectures, do the hw problems, and stay on top of the material, you can easily make an A. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a positive impact Dr. Petros left on me. Take her!!
Thoroughly enjoyed the class.
She's great! Really enjoyed her class even though it was at 8 AM. Take her class, study, and you'll get an A for sure.
She scared me one day when I left class and she said bye to me, by name, she genuinely cares about her students. AMAZING teacher, her blackboard is the best of any class I've had with the information she posts. Practice the equations, memorize the scholars who created them. Gives a lot of extra credit. Recommend. (Just don't assume it's an easy A.)
If you're a science major required to suffer through chemistry, take Petros' class. She'll make it as fun as one possibly can. Although, this is not an easy A. You have to actually take the time to learn the material, but she's there to help if you want help.
Took her for both CHEM 1410 and 1420. She explains everything as simple and straightforward as possible! Made an A in both classes and it's not easy, but she is hands down my favorite professor at UNT. PLEASE take her if you ever get the chance. Read the book if you need it, do the homework problems, ATTEND class and the tests will be a breeze.
Overall great professor. She takes the time to make sure that you are really where you need to be. The class isn't easy, but you actually learn. Overall, I would definitely recommend her.
To me she was very easy to understand. I wish I would've taken her for Chem 2 or whatever number it is. :P
I love her.Clear, concise, helpful.Makes lectures & class as fun as she can. Cares about students.Works hard to give outside resources, videos, it's endless. And cute to boot! ;D Appreciate her for working so hard to help students succeed. If every professor were more like her, college would be a far more pleasant experience.
I took her a couple of years ago for gen chem 1. Probably one of the best professors I've had at UNT! As long as you go to class and take notes there is NO reason not to get an A. I studied my class notes for every test and probably used the textbook twice and made an A on every test. And I never went to recitation. Amazing professor!
Great professor! If you attend classes regularly and do the assigned hw problems(plus some reading), you will be fine. She also gives extra credit opportunities through SI sessions and recitations. She was very helpful and her lectures were easy to understand.
Took Organic chemistry I & II in the summer session so it went by fast. It was her first time teaching organic, so she really didn't go over every concept and mechanism in lecture. You have to immerse yourself in the podcasts and do all the homework and group assignments to know what you're doing. Tests and grading are fair. Lots of EC.
I was struggling at the beginning of the semester then after the drop date when everyone dropped the class became so much easier. I attended most of the SI sessions. Josh Lackey is such a great SI and I don't think I would've gotten an A if I did not attend the SI sessions. I recommend going throughout the semester!
Great teacher, very available friendly and helpful, with a good sense of humor in her lectures as well. Do the selected homework problems each week and you'll be fine. The SI classes and recitations are helpful and worth 10 pts extra credit a piece if you attend 10 throughout the semester .
She's the best gen chem professor at UNT. She explains everything thoroughly, and if you need any help she's more than willing to help. She gives a good amount of extra credit. Overall i really liked her lecture class.
She doesn't use powerpoints which was really tricky for me. It's a really tough subject so attendance is crucial
Dr. Petros was anything I could have ever wished for in a professor. There are 4 tests (she drops your lowest) and a cumulative final. She assigns non-mandatory homework, but it really gives you sense of how questions will be asked on the test. Don't mistake this for an easy A. I love Chemistry, but I still studied my lecture notesHW to get an A.
Wonderful Professor. tests were easy if you read and she gives 20 extra credit points for going to recitations and SI sessions. I would absolutely take her again
The lectures are the best part of the class, makes them very interesting and entertaining. 30 bonus points possible, really saves your grade. She is always there to answer questions and help out. All the information she taught was information needed for the MCAT Chemistry seection. Pre Med or not, take this professor for a great learning experience
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Lectures are engaging and she teaches by working out the problems with us. Homework is not graded, but you must put in work in order to pass. She gives you TONS of resources, and is more than happy to help you in her office hours or via e-mail. I dreaded taking this class, but now I enjoy going to her lectures.
Dr. Petros is an amazing teacher who really takes the time to make sure you understand the material. I am taking her again next semester for Gen Chem 2. Shes such a great teacher.
She is an amazing professor, but the exams can really mess you up. Doing the homework really helps.
Would recommend, Helpful.
Petros is the best Gen Chem professor that one can get. Her lectures are interesting and not boring. As long as you go to class, and do the homework, the class is easy. She make chemistry easy.
Very intelligent professor, very tough tests. She is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. Barely, just barely passed the semester.
Dr. Petros is AMAZING! I loved her 8am Gen Chem class! Go to office hours she is so helpful! Really cares about her students! Definitely recommend her for science majors
Dr Petros was a very good teacher. She helps her students a lot! I had an 89.4 after the final and ended up getting an A in the class. The attendance grade is what saved me. This class is not easy. Test #2 the average was around a 50. Can drop one test. Put in the effort and you will see the results.
Dr. Petros loves chemistry and wants you to pass! If you put forth an effort you will pass. She doesn't assign homework for grades but gives you problems to work to help prepare for the test. Do them! Test are simple, she doesn't try to trick you. Recitation is mandatory.
Dr. Amy Petros is the best professor I've taken in quite a long time. She encourages students to come to office hours, and is incredibly patient with endless questions. She explains material clearly in lectures (come to everything), grades entirely on tests that have tight time limits, but you won't pass them unless you do the textbook hw. Gives EC
She wants her students to succeed. Lectures are recorded and is often available in her office. Always willing to help. Don't take her class lightly though! Show up, take notes, ask for help if you need it, and don't get behind. Tough, but fair.
If you want a good grade in chemistry DO NOT take her. Her test are the complete opposite of what you learn in class.
Dr. Petros is a very good lecturer. She records her lectures so you won't miss much if you can't make it to class. She offers ways to get more points in class and she cares about her students. I strongly recommend her for chemistry classes.
Professor Petros is an awesome teacher. She is very caring and very willing to help if you reach out. This is just a tough class Your grade is all exam based. She gives some extra credit for straight attendance (10pts) and SI sessions (10pts for 10 or more sessions) but that's IT! These pts are given on a all or nothing scale. keep up with the hmwK
I LOVED her class. She has great lectures that are easy to follow along with. She does not take attendance, and records her lectures. She has homework from the book that is assigned, but not turned in or graded. I recommend you do it though to get the most out of the class. She is really straight forward with what she test over. Would take again.
Dr. Petros is an amazingly smart teacher who understands what she is doing and that students are busy. She is extremely helpful and loves her job! Would definitely recommend her to anyone
I took Dr. Petros for General Chemistry 1410 and 1420. She is a great professor and very passionate about chemistry! She assigns homework out of the book that is not graded, but necessary to prepare for her tests. There is extra credit for SI sessions and recitation! Definitely recommend taking her!
Great professor overall, the only problem with this class is that the tests is the only grade you get besides extra credit. If you pass the tests and not so good on the final (final is 40% of the grade) you have a chance of failing. Homework is not for a grade and it demotivates you to do it so I wish it would be at least extra credit.
Best Teacher ever! She did a great job on telling you what to focus on. The problems we went over in class strongly resemble the questions on the tests. She reviews a ton!! Its great. I took her for 1410 and 1420 and I had no chemistry experience before, and got A's in both.
Probably one of the best professors at UNT! Amazing lectures and is very patient with question that you ask her. Wish she had more work sheets for grades but your grade depends on 3 test plus a final! And she records lectures! Wish she had a Ochem class, I would definitely take it.
Great professor
Honestly i cant stand this teacher she teaches as if everyone is very familiar with chemistry and it just really threw me off. She doesnt curve her tests or give out reviews and her lectures only cover basic examples and nothing like whats on the actual test. Wish I would have picked a different chemistry teacher.
Dr. Petros is the most amazing chemistry professor at UNT. She constantly shows how much she cares for her student. Her class is not the easiest but with her help and as long as you study you can get an A. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to actually understand chemistry.
Dr. Petros is an AMAZING professor! The best way to learn in this class is to be willing to learn. There is homework that should be done for your benefit but its not mandatory. In this course you'll find a lot of "not mandatory" but you paid for the course might as well put in the effort to understand the information or you'll behind in the future
SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!
Petros is great, I wish I could take her for every chem class. She is so sweet, cares about her students, and loves chemistry. I was worried about taking chem because I suck at it, but she really made it easy to understand. She is THE BEST. The textbook problems are more difficult than the test, sometimes they helped and sometimes they confused me.
3 test and a final that accounts for 40% of your overall grade. Petros assigns HW weekly but it's not turned in. To pass this class I strongly recommend doing the HW it helps a ton as well as the supplemental HW which provides questions similar to the test (all 20 questions). One complaint is petros only goes over simple problems in class.
I had Dr. P for Chem one and she was great, however a lot of her policies have changed since then. She added a group pop quiz every single week. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I hate group work. I used to love her, but why change what wasn't broken in the first place?
Okay well most reviews here are given by people who are on a bandwagon for this lady. Don't get me wrong here but this class can be as difficult as you make it. If you don't do the homework you will struggle HARD. First exam is easy but just gets harder after that. I've heard other professors are a ton easier. This class can be tough.
Petros is an amazing teacher and has the ability to teach difficult subjects easily. She's patient and hilarious, and very passionate about what she teaches. I would definitely take her again, she got me excited about learning chemistry.
Dr.P has been my favorite professor so far. She's pretty quirky and fun and makes the class interesting. She explains the topics very well and gives lots of information (although she sticks to what will be tested or tells you if she goes off topic). She records her lectures so you can go back and review. She really goes above and beyond
Chem 1410 was so much fun and easy with this professor but she changed the entire format for her class in Chem 1420. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will definitely fail if you don't show up because she does group assignments/individual quizzes throughout the week. Was hard to understand in Chem 1420 , but I would take her again for Chem 1410
I was so worried about taking chem! but honestly professor petros is amazing! she is super passionate about the subject and test are fairly easy. I came into this class not knowing any chemistry and still passed with an A. As for tests, I'd suggest finding people with old exams SO HELPFUL!!! some question are even recycled!
She goes above and beyond. A lot of people in don't like the new group work/quizzes but I don't mind them. She drops four of each and they don't count for very much. Something to keep in mind is that Chem 2 is quite harder than Chem 1. DO THE HOMEWORK, rework group assignments, etc And go to her office hours. She is very forgiving and explains well
I hated this class. If your foundation in chem isn't strong be ready to struggle and go to SI session
Too scatterbrained. Gives new material the day of exams. Very confusing lectures by bouncing around between different methods.
Petros is amazing, I intentionally took her again for 1420. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I failed the first exam in 1420 but still got an A, it was hard but not impossible. Favorite professor I've ever had. You really learn the material and she makes it so accessible with recorded lectures online. Take her!!!
She is super captivating and genuinely cares about her students! She gives lots of opportunities to learn more about concepts you don't understand. I'm purposely taking her again next semester for Gen Chem II.
Dr. Petros knows chemistry but can't teach it. Don't take this class unless you've heavily reviewed basic chemistry beforehand. Textbooks are only used for optional homework. If you read the chapters before class you'll actually understand what she's talking about, though. Attendance only matters during recitations and group activities.
Dr Petros is an amazing professor! She is reasonable with the amount of work she gives. She also records her lectures so you can go back if you missed anything. One of my favorite professors at UNT. HIGHLY recommend!!
She's a great teacher and person. Grading was easy. However, I struggled in this course mainly because of myself. I only passed one exam and managed to get a C in the end. Do examples like she says, go to SI sessions, and you'll be fine. She's very approachable.
Dr. Petros goes above & beyond for her students! She is approachable and will know your name after talking to you once. She offers a lot of extra credit and review sessions. Her old tests are great study tools and offer good example questions. I am purposefully taking her again for Gen Chem II
Great lectures, taught the material well, exams were fair.
If you came to college with a strong chemistry background this class will be fine, otherwise take a different proffessor. Mcaffey is still difficult but I would recommend his class instead. Ive heard the other Chem teachers are easier. Its hard to prepare for tests and her course content is cluttered with videos that dont help you.
Was overall a good professor, she is very passionate about Chemistry and knows a lot. Personally, her teaching style did not appeal to my learning style. She does not have any powerpoints and teaches only through examples. Her tests were difficult but fair, I was able to pass all of them. Final is worth twice as much as every other test.
She is not a good teacher at all. I would never take this class again as she is very unfair and says things that do not make sense. It is an easy A but she can take that away very easily as she is unfair and quite frankly not nice.
Easy class, however, the teacher is horrible. She has a horrible personality as well.
She is a horrible teacher and she can not teach people the material well, however, if you self study then it is easy and you can earn an A.
Even though the labs are taught by a TA, all of the labs and quizzes are set up by Dr. Petros. The quizzes are online and are due the night before the lab, they're easy 100s. There are 2 lab reports which are prep for Organic Chemistry and are due towards the end. The material is set up well and the labs are interesting.
Ive had a very frustrating time with this professor. She does have office hours, but because she does not teach the material well there is usually a line of 15-20 students. She sees 1-2 students at a time. Ive been late to my following class several times trying to get access to her. Her lectures are not useful. Better teach yourself.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not know how to teach at all and honestly looks a little scary as well. She doesn't care about her students and shouldn't be teaching something she doesn't care about.
Dr. Petros was very organized in lecture and made the class very accessible. Her expectations were clear as far as what students needed to know on exams. The exams weren't difficult as long as you did the homework and showed up to class. That being said, she wasn't accessible outside of class and it seems like she dislikes students who miss class.
Dr. Petros is very knowledgeable in chemistry, but teaching not so much... I didn't like her teaching style and sometimes she wasn't very clear. You can go to her office hours but there's always a line of people so my advice is to teach yourself.. I would not recommend taking her for chemistry.
She's an OK teacher, and generally teaches at an understandable pace. Major plus: she records her lectures, so you don't have to show up. Exams can be a little rough, but there are enough resources to make at least a high B easily. You don't have to tryhard, but just attending a review session or two before the exam can be enough.
Best Chemistry teacher at UNT (and my favorite teacher at UNT.) She really cares and she teaches her students like they are smart and can grasp concepts that they once thought out of their reach. Dr. Petros wants every one to get a good grade as well and gives quizes and homework to bump up grade and drops the lowest ones. SHE's THE BEST
Dr. Petros has got to be the most amazing professor i've ever had. She recorded her lectures which was awesome i could back and review materials. There are 3 exams and a final, she drops an exam. She had SIs and a review with her on fridays which helped a lot. She really cares about her students and is very knowledgable in her field.
I tried to go to her office hours because I was hospitalized and missed two lectures. She treated me like a lazy student who skipped class and refused to help me because I missed class so I cant expect her to help me.
A+ professor. Lectures are not boring and the best part is she records all of them so it's okay even if you miss or just don't want to wake up at 8 am. Class was graded by 4 exams, no homework. Exams are not hard and should be easy if you paid even slight attention to her lectures. Book not required.
Amy Petros is an ok teacher. Goes from 0-100 and once you accidentally fall behind, there is no way to catch up. I heard she is rude to students during office hours. Her recitation is group work. Does not "believe" in curves. Tests are super hard and have short answers. I did not do well in the beginning and dropped before I screwed up my gpa.
I took Dr. Petros for both general chemistry 1&2. She gives good lectures that she records and posts on canvas, however, she has some of the most questionable exam writing strategies ever. Don't be surprised when there is at least one trick question per test or when you rewatch a lecture and she makes a mistake that makes the problem unsolvable
Petros was good in the first semester I took with her in gen chem 1. She was great in the first semester actually, when she was doing paper test. I ended up with an A+ (97). But now she is doing online test in the computer lab and her question are difficult. Some will have 12 free response and others will have 2. VERY UNFAIR. I now have a C.
Professor was very disrespectful and when asked for help, acted like I was annoying her. Test were hard and not always over what we talked about in class, I felt as if she wanted me to fail. Lecture was interesting to listen to but hard to understand because lecture notes were very messy and unorganized. Would not take again!!
5 exams final count 200, she drop one of the first 4, very disorganized material, very rude to answer email and sometimes it feel like she really did not read them. good thing classes are entertaining and she record the classes so you can go over it. she does not do any review for any exam. no equation sheets for exams.
She really doesnt care about her students. Shes quite lovely in person, but once you get to know her, you can tell its an act. UNT is already an academically-disadvantaged school, so getting a professor that makes your life worse than it already is really hurts. Dont take her. I hope she moves on to better things for her. I am so disappointed.
I asked her for help over an optional worksheet posted online, and she told me to stop skipping recitation. I have never skipped her recitation in my life. She makes her students feel below her. I do not like her attitude. If you enjoy being mistreated, she is the one for you! Ive never gotten a C in my life and Ive taken 100 credit hours. Beware
Dont take her. Honestly, just dont do it.
Im so sad. I cant believe I took her. Please dont put yourself in my position. I am honestly so depressed. Do not take her. EVER. Terrible professor.
I really enjoyed her class/grade layout from last semester. However, she decided to change everything up this semester. I also never liked how her exams are computer based and she uses a test bank. Its really unfair that some people get more/less short answer questions based on luck. I studied very hard, but still struggled.
Starting this semester she used a flipped classroom method, where one listens to lectures online and learns the material by yourself and then in class uses what you learned to complete assignments where your grade comes from. While some topics are covered more than others, if you just do the work outside of class you will easily pass.
Get ready to teach yourself. It is going to be a lot of work to get an A in the class. Her teaching style was very different and hard to fully learn the material.
Dont do it
This woman is LAZY. It's amazing how she still has a job. She NEVER taught a single class throughout the semester. You have to watch videos at home, take notes, then do group work that is significantly more difficult than the video notes. Sometimes the videos don't even cover the material on the worksheets. The tests are super difficult. SI helps
This was my 3rd time taking chem (mcafee 2x)Everyone who rated her poorly didn't care to study & are lazy. Videos & textbook were clear& covered assignments. She's a nice prof, understanding, & NOT lazy. The flipped course was what made the class easier. I'm glad she taught the class they way she did bc it forced you to study and learn the material
A lot of people rate this professor poorly but dont realize that this class is just extremely difficult on its own and is going to take a lot of time outside of class. She used a flipped or inverted class so all of our notes were done outside of class and we worked through problems in groups in class which made things 100x easier to understand.
The class is hard. Most people who think it is easy are taking it for a 2nd or 3rd time. She does an ok job explaining concepts in her videos, but she is ruthless if you miss class or are 10 minutes late. Grading scale is horrid. You can get 100s on all your test and still not get an A if you miss class. Shes an ok teacher but a difficult person.
Amy Petros is a good teacher. You do the lectures online during your own time, and during class you do the actual graded assignments with small groups. If you go to the PLTL and SI sessions, she will give you 20 extra credit point. The SI sessions are really good reviews for all the exams. If you work diligently, you will pass the class.
Dr. Petros has a flipped class (only come to class 2 times instead of 4) but you have to take notes before. During class, you work in groups to solve a worksheet which solidifies the info and helps you understand the material. She cares so much about her students, you just have to study and the exams will be straight forward. Go to the SI/PLTL!!
It's flipped classroom, watch lecture/take notes outside of class, come do assignments for your grade. You work with a group of 4 other people. 1420 lectures covered less than her 1410 lectures so theres some confusion on stuff she didn't cover that shows up in the papers. GO TO PLTL! Its 10 points at the end of semester really helps understanding
She is awful. She doesn't teach at all and just gives videos that don't even help. For chemistry lab, her videos never help. Don't take her class.
Im the review before this, her transition to online due to Corona pandemic was almost seamless. Out of all my professors she was the 1st to tell us whats going on and how we're gonna handle it. Her online version is the best out of all of my classes after they had to switch. Gave us info as she got it, very caring about us.
Honestly, she's a really nice person, but she thinks she has things figured out and she doesn't. Her students are constantly struggling and she takes is as a sign of their lack of effort, despite most students completing all assignments. Truthfully, I think is has to do with her "flipped" classroom style. Her online lectures are old and not good.
What even was this class?? "Flipped classroom" not done efficiently. Exams are not easy and everything goes by so fast with that course. 10/10 would not recommend.
I heard Petros was a good teacher, but this year she switched to "flipped classroom." No lectures, just online videos and notes, and you come to every class to do group work. Her 'studies' on this flipped classroom (which she liked to show everyday) did not match the failing test grades and students' cries for help. She did nothing. Do not take her
I am good at chemistry, however the flipped classroom made it a real struggle to learn. For this class, you watch videos she's already made, then show up and do only group work. There isn't much homework. The tests are a little confusing at times. On some quizzes, there were a few questions that covered material that wasn't mentioned in lectures
She lacks the most basic human decency to be a professor. Especially during a pandemic. She is a horrible teacher, and anything her students confront her about, she blames on them not studying enough. She raises the questions on the exam while giving less time so you get a 50? Must've not studied enough. She is the reason I stopped going for premed
This semester was terrible. I studied a min. of 30 hrs/week & got a C. Dr. P tried the flipped classroom, & instead of seeing how it hurt students, would go against them, say they weren't studying as much as claimed, her videos you need to learn are nowhere near what you need to know for exams, etc. Don't take this class if you struggle with chem.
The assignments weren't difficult, the real issue was the exams and her inconsideration to student's feedback. The exams (blanks & mc) were significantly more difficult than the assignments. She failed to teach her students by sticking with an inverted class, & was blindfolded to the fact that if most students are struggling it's on her not them.
Ahh Amy Petros. I have always had teachers who change what they are doing when students arent successful. She decided that when she has failing averages (50-60s) she thinks its a great idea to make them even harder. We sure proved that flipped classroom doesn't work. Her notes are too long and I suggest you save yourself and find a different class
Her tests were extremely difficult and material was pulled from topics never covered in class and she didnt even teach the class herself, everything was online like I cant learn chemistry from videos that always black out, are in random order and just do not work.
Initially, Dr. Petros seems to have a lot of good reviews when I decided to take her class. However, I was not prepared for a "flipped" course. (Notes taken out-of-class, group assignments done in-class, show up to 2 lectures) She can be very snarky when responding to students' concerns and made no adjustments except "open-note" during quarantine.
Professor Petros truly believes that her class should take #1 priority above all else, even during a pandemic. Her flipped class double the amount of work, and she expects us to be studying 20+ hours a week for her class. While she does provide necessary resources, she doesn't teach. Very unsympathetic to any situation and unwilling to accommodate
This lady pretends to be loving and accessible but does not actually listen to any student feedback or want us to do well. Her flipped lectures are garbage and only teach basic concepts, while exams are ridiculously difficult in comparison. Someone said "i could tell her my mom died and she'd say 'come to office hours to do practice problems'" lol.
Only take her class if you're willing and able to do a lot of work on your own to bridge the gap between her flipped lecture videos (featuring only the most basic examples) and the problems you have to do on your own. And even then, be prepared for test questions on random things in none of the modules, confused TAs, key errors, and typos galore!
She uses the flipped-class method which can be hard for some students to transition to. She disregarded student concerns and did not care much about how our grades were suffering throughout the pandemic. Getting an A was not easy, but it wasn't impossible. I had to put in a lot of my time dedicated to this class, she made it harder than it was.
Petros started off by showing one stat about flipped classrooms working and didn't care when students did poorly with it in place. Her lecture modules sometimes had about 4 hours of content from previous years which sometimes didn't match what we needed to know. She has no mercy and doesn't understand why we can't slave away for her chem class.
She teaches in a flipped classroom. She's very passive-aggressive when responding to student emails and she doesn't lay out grading criteria in her syllabus. The lecture videos she uses are 3+ years old and are very chopped up. So be aware a video could end in the middle of her sentence and they are not always in order. TAs are not on the same page
Her lecture videos are years old and chopped up. Her videos do not teach what is on her quizzes or exams. She pretends that she cares about her students, but refuses to ever curve grades as "she wrote the test," but her avg. test grades are in the 50's. Her TA's never know what is going on. Overall awful prof. as she doesn't teach nor care.
Ive taken Petros the past 2 semesters and I actually liked her the first semester. However, she made it as difficult as possible for you to succeed in the class this semester. The tests were very hard to finish during the online portion of the semester because she added questions and there was a time limit. I do not recommend
Fine for 1410, shes awful for 1420. Videos are years old, choppy, don't cover whats on assignments. TAs have no idea what is going on (in both 1410/1420). Whenever she makes mistakes (often) she won't tell you what they are and lets them affect your grade. had problems that the TAs had no clue how to do. not curving b/c of ec opps. Regret taking.
The tests are 10x harder than the videos and the group work. She frequently makes grading mistakes and REFUSES to fix them, thus negatively affecting your grade. The ONLY way to pass is going to office hours, PLTL, and SI. You will have to diverge all of your attention away from other courses just to focus on this one! She's NOT a good professor.
Goes out of her way to make this course needlessly difficult. Lots of homework that doesn't carry over to the tests. She likes to act like she is super sweet and caring but it's all feigned. No curves. No extra credit. She gets failing averages on nearly every exam and blames the students for not putting in the work. Avoid if possible.
Use Dr. Petros knowledge of chemistry to your advantage. If you ask for help she will not hesitate to give it to you! Dont rely on the book or homework questions for test prep - use her notes, videos, and reviews primarily. Pay attention to minor details in lectures. The first exam was by far the hardest. Time consuming course but doable!
I had Dr. Petros for CHEM 1420 and dont think will take her classes again. You have to get familiar with the huge lecture material on your own, then come to the class and take a group quiz. This is basically how the class works. She doesnt teach at all, you just have to watch a 10 y.o videos of her poorly explaining the material. Tricky exam Qs!
Sigh, I wouldn't say she's a horrible professor, I just think she makes the class unnecessarily hard for no reason. The course is pretty tough so if you don't have good study habits, pls don't do it. As far as the professor herself, she's pretty solid. she rubs me the wrong way a bit but that may be personal.
Free textbook but will never use. She uses lectures that she created when dinosaurs were walking on the grounds we live on. Lectures are pretty short and straight to the point, but half of what she talks about in her lectures just makes no sense. HW is easy. Class time is used for a group quiz. Tests are WAAAAAAY harder than HW and group quizzes.
My lowest course grade is on her class. The way she teaches depends heavily on you learning lessons on your own with her 2+ year old videos and very few notes she gives. This forces you to go over lots of YouTube videos and show up to multiple of her SI or PLTI sessions to make a good grade. The HW she gives are not hard but her tests are 3x that.
An incredible professor but you have to put in the work. She's super helpful and a great mentor.
Dont. Take. Her. Believe everyone when they say her tests are HARD. Hw & group-work is easy, but dont reflect the tests at all. Students usually fail the first 2 test (her words) & she just giggles about it. She seems nice but she is not sympathetic to your situation at all. So much I could say on why you should avoid her but theres a char limit.
I will be unbiased and truthful in this review. I studied everything I possibly could for this class. I went to every SI and PLTL, I stayed after almost every class and asked Dr.P to test my knowledge by giving me a very difficult problem, you name it, I did it. Her exams are a trap, I failed every exam. Almost failed the class. Dont take her.
I acknowledge & respect Petros as a knowledgeable Chem prof. However, I would not take her class again: -slow/anxiety test-takers BEWARE; strict time constraints -hw and group asgmts are too easy; don't reflect test difficulty -don't expect an A unless you're willing to figure out untaught course material that appears on tests
She is sweet, but doesn't respond quick. Assignments don't reflect the tests and tends to say that you need more practice. Attended PLTL sessions, but they're only for practice problems. Group assignments are done on zoom and it's a hit or miss for a good group. Stay after zoom for questions, and exams are hard. Lowest grades and exams are dropped.
She make you take her exams in the testing center which increased my anxiety like crazy. The material goes by fast and she covers everything, but her exams are something else. Her exams were mostly free response on the computer in the testing center. Dropped the class after the first exam, glad i saved myself
She has a nice personality, but doesn't actually teach in class (seriously, the most live teaching she did was in the final review). Her lecture videos are unorganized and hard to follow. The assignments she gives and example problems she works through are not at all reflective of the test content. If you're not a chemistry major, do not take her.
The assignments and reviews are nothing like the tests, so it's so hard to prepare. The class average for the exams was consistently in the high 50's, and the average for the final was 50.25. And she teaches like you're already super familiar with the material. She's nice and all, but I don't feel like I understood any of the material.
Shes a nice person but doesnt teach well. She teaches almost as if we should already know the information. If she notices a mistake on a test she lowers your grade or raises. Her class averages are really low but doesnt seem to make a change. She also makes up symbols and elements whit makes working out problems more difficult.
Do NOT take Professor Petros. She does not teach well at all. I switched professors hoping that I would do better, but nope. The final is worth 25% of your grade. The exam averages are terrible, and there are NO curves. I am lucky that I passed this class but I'm still very disappointed.
Dr. Petros is an amazing professor. Chem is a really hard class, she explains things simply and is always there for extra help or to reiterate when you need it. She really loves teaching and as a student it is very obvious.
Dr. Petros cares about what she teaches but she makes many mistakes. There were errors on every exam that we took this semester and she made calculation mistakes in many of her lecture videos and homework assignments. The class overall wasn't too difficult or unfair but there are better professors out there. If you can, take someone else.
The classroom is "flipped" meaning you're expected to do all of the TEACHING on your own time which takes 1-2 hours +1 hour for attending class + 1 hour for PLTL (optional) This class assumes that you have too much time and is tailored to require the professor to teach as little as possible. You might as well take it online or choose another prof.
Petros is kind but her class is hard. Class time is group worksheets. Lectures either in person or recordings on canvas. Recordings are outdated usually so recitation is the better option. Class size is so large it is hard to get help from Petros. Online quizzes for each subject. It is a hard class but with the right resources you might do well.
In this class you basically teach yourself. She does have videos on each topic however if you didn't watch it or take notes your screwed. She doesn't allow you to look up how to solve the problem either show you have to sit there and ask around. Overall you teach yourself and hope for the best.
Majority of grades come from the group assignments completed in class, and it's a flipped classroom so you do the lectures on your own time before you come to class or you won't know what's happening. Offers about 5% extra credit which is nice, also provides study groups and opportunities.
Dr. Petros cares but her teaching method isn't for everyone. It's hybrid meaning you have to watch her videos online prior to class and just mainly doing group assignments in class w/small explanation of subject. Extra credit given for PLTL/student sessions but not the best times scheduled for that. Tons of weekly hw/quiz.
She doesn't go into depth during class, you need to contact outside of class if confused about the subject. Tons of hw/quiz every week. Group assignment everyday. She uses the hybrid method. Pre-recorded videos of her explain problems and summary of the topic for in-person and online. Great teacher, not the method for everyone.
Dr. Petros uses a flipped classroom style to structure this course. At first I was apprehensive, but she really did an amazing job teaching high yield content online and testing our problem solving skills in person. You can get an A in this course if you 1) show up 2) work as a team 3) meet regularly with the prof. BTW PLTL is your friend!!
The class I took was hybrid-- we met MW for an hour. Lectures were online and mostly videos ranging from 2-15 minutes. My best advice is to make sure you keep up with the lectures, TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS, and reach out to the professor if you need help. Dr. Petros will answer quickly and reach out if you need help.
Dr. Petros is amazing, her class is hybrid, half online, half in-person. Most of the assignments are during class in a group setting. She is very caring and definitely wants you to succeed. If you can't do online classes, I suggest not taking her though, since most of her lectures are online.
Exam were fair, SI session extra credit, and every week group assignment during class.
I took Professor Petros for CHEM 1410 my freshman year. I am currently taking her for CHEM 1420 and I think she is amazing. She utilizes flipped classroom so all of her lectures are recorded, they're about 10-20 min and you watch them before class. She has office hours and is so ready to help you. It is not the easiest class but she cares a lot :)
Dr. Petros is a nice enough person but her class is awful. The homework and group assignments are easy but the tests are always extremely hard. I have never felt like a professor was actively trying to trick students until taking this class. Each test feels like she designed it to make you do poorly and she never curves or gives extra credit.
She was a very nice and caring teacher, great person. However the way she taught her class isn't for everyone, its a half online half in person so you kind of have to teach yourself the material just by watching some old videos she has. Then you do group work in class, it is hard to really grasp the material and her test are kind of hard
Dr. Petros teachings a flipped hybrid class. Meaning you watch her lecture videos before class, and during class you work on group assignments. Dr. Petros is a very caring, and nice person, and cares for her students. The tests are hard, and often have questions you haven't seen before though. I recommend either PLTL or study sessions to do well.
Dr. Petros is so sweet! Although the class style might not be for everyone, you have to be able to adapt. Go to PLTL and office hours, and ask questions! The lecture videos are short, so there is plenty of time to watch, and you get 3 tries for homework! Use homework and practice exams to study and the group assignments, and you will be golden.
Easily my easiest class which is kinda crazy since I had always struggled with chemistry in the past. She's very thoroughly explains things in the online lectures. It's a hybrid class so it has a mix of online lectures and in person assignments. What I recommend is to just watch the lectures and do the assignments, with that you'll pass no problem.
1410 is a hybrid course for Dr. Petros so only 2 hours is in person instruction and 2 is online. Her class is setup very well she uses a free textbook and all assignments are through canvas so you'll never have to pay for any resources in her class. Every assignment and new section online has all the lectures, textbook chapters & extra videos.
hybrid class with an amazing professor, always open to feedback. instructions are super clear and there's tons of support available. attending PLTL sessions and attending class almost guarantees a good grade in the class.
Taken both General Chemistry courses with Dr. Petros now. Her course structure and flow is extremely good and easy to get a hang of. Do not forget to watch the lecture videos before each class or you will not do well, as well prepare for exams with the provided practice problems and exams and you will do perfectly fine.
Although Dr. Petros is caring of her students, the class structure is lacking. The lecture videos provided for the hybrid course are not always easy to follow and do not provide enough examples for what we see on tests. If you do not get the material and you are in a class group who goes too fast, you will struggle in this class.
I LOVED this class. She made gen chem so easy and accessible. Hybrid learning isn't for everyone I'm sure but the style of class is highly organized. It's really difficult to get lost unless you really just don't understand the concepts, but Dr. Petros is super approachable. Would definitely take any class taught by her!
Professor Petros' class is a bit unconventional, but if you're willing to adapt, it can be a great learning experience. The lecture videos and group work are helpful, and using unstuckstudy along with PLTL sessions can make all the difference.
She was honestly one of the most supportive professors I've ever met at UNT. She really does care about her students, and if you put in the work she will work with you.
great, intelligible, caring professor. she won't baby you because she respects you. office hours are top-notch, highly recommend.
I am currently taking her, and despite my low grade (81 as of right now—my own fault since I didn't study very well for the first exam), she is an AMAZING professor. She does assign quite a bit of lecture vids, but she is incredibly detailed and very good at explaining this subject. She is hilarious and sweet. Awesome teacher!! 1000/10 recommend.
Dr. Petros is a good teacher, the hybrid lectures are ok, but the in-person class is all group work. My biggest complaint is that there is a divide between what we learn from the lectures and how the tests are laid out. Do the problem sets, do the extra work, and make sure you talk to classmates, PLTL sessions, and office hours if you want to pass.
She's a nice lady and the hybrid structure was ok, there are just a lot of videos and material to digest on your own and then you have to work it out on an assignment with your group. Best thing would be to just go to the Chemistry Resource Center as often as you can, I was always with Haiyan and he's an amazing teacher and the only reason I passed
I loved Dr. P. She was so kind. I had her for Gen Chem. She lets you work in groups and does her lectures online. It's a tough subject but she gives you the tools to succeed.
this was a "flipped classroom" style of class, do not take it if you don't know what you're getting into! you take notes before the "lecture" and spend class time doing practice problems with your group. you may not interact much with dr petros herself but she's very friendly, funny, and loves to help students. just don't be atraid to reach out
Be warned that this classroom is a flipped classroom. If you have little knowledge of chemistry i would stay away as you are expected to teach yourself chemistry. She also locked extra credit behind age requirements or time requirements which aren't available to everyone.
The classroom doesn't have a recitation, which I didn't think much of until it actually started. She expects you to thoroughly look at her videos (which are outdated; 2020), and come prepared to class. She doesn't lecture unless people are having trouble or it's the day after the exam. The videos were unreliable for me; I did a lot of self study.
I had her as a lab instructor in a CURE lab that I did not choose to be a part of. She had no outline of what we were doing; there were vague instructions given, and the whole class stayed confused. We were in the lab for on average 2 hours, and overall, I have no idea what our lab purpose was. This class made me miss Labflow.
While she is a good person and very understanding, I didn't like how her class was taught. It was heavily based on watching videos before class and taking notes on them. In addition, we had to work in groups to solve problems based on the videos. One thing that was really helpful, though, was the PLTL sessions
We watch videos outside of class and apply what we learned to a group assignment in class. She chooses the groups of 4 people total. Just started the class this is the 2nd week, so can't say much. I will update at the end of the semester.
I don't recommend this professor because her type of "teaching" isn't good for this type of class. She calls it a "hybrid" learning class because we take notes at home by watching her old lecture videos. When we're in class, the group assignments very rarely correlate with the notes we have taken. Also, the notes are broad and don't go in-depth.
As the other review said, it was a flipped class even though it did not say that during enrollment. She has videos from 2018 as her "lectures". The "lecture" videos barely match up to our whiteboard assignments during class, which is the entire class. I could write a lot but I hit the character count. Avoid this witch at all costs. NO EXTRA CREDIT.
Okay, look. Dr. Petros can be a little disorganized sometimes, but she explains difficult concepts SO effectively. She is knowledgeable and approachable. She has been working hard to replace the old lecture videos with better, shorter video clips. If you do the work, you will be very successful. Just stay organized, and go to her office hours.
