She moves quickly and class is confusing. She needs to start specifying her percise expectations before she gives the assignment...not when she's marking it. I had her the first time she ever taught the course and 3/4 of the class failed the first midterm. She tries very hard, and is improving though. She is helpful when you go to see her.
She is amazing. She has such a good way of explaining things and relates well to her students. She is willing ot help, show up early to class or emails work great and it is important to try, but what class doesn't expect that. She was an AWESOME lab instructor!
She needs to start putting more care into what she does. Completely unorganized, degrades other professions and sciences. She is new and it shows. Don't take her class if you don't need to.
Amy is actually fairly good. she DOES explain things clearly, and in as many ways as she can that willmake u understand.but she is very helpful, and not too picky of a marker.she actually always told us exactly how she wants us to do things (before assignments)you just have to take good notes and write down everything she says while she explains it
One of those TAs you could like IF they managed lab time well and their explanations weren't so one-way, one-method, no deviations and forget about questions asking for clarification. Nice person, but I want effective if I'm being graded, not just nice.
She makes sure you do the questions in the lab book, but then rarely goes over them (so you can know whether or not you did them right)! She gives quizzes on labs that she has not even once discussed. If you ask too many questions in class, she gets angry and raises her voice. Quiz #1 (5%): EASY; Quiz #2 (5%): RIDICULOUSLY HARD. No consistency.
Unfortunately first year students dont know good profs when they have them. Amy is very thorough. She does lots of review and makes sure every single person in her class knows the content. She is an easy marker to boot. When the lab final comes around, her class is usually the first one finished and the only one which thought it was easy. good prof
I loved biology before having her as a lab professor. Once in her class I felt her reluctant to go into detail about how to do things and not very willing to help. For assignments she would be very particular about what she was looking for but didn't go into detail about how to do it (as mentioned above). I regret having her as a prof.
The labs are extremely hard to begin with and she takes on the "independent student" approach. Didn't find her very helpful and the quizzes were extremely difficult which resulted in the extremely low CA. Nice person but i would still prefer more than a nice person if its going to be 40% of my grade.
Nice lady but doesn't know how to teach; like other reviewer said, believes in "independent student" approach. CA of 59% and 62% for the first two midterms attest to this. She is disorganized and it feels like she makes up her lectures as she goes. Her BlackBoard notes are useless - just pictures from textbook. If you haven't taken BIO 30, avoid!!!
Professor Tessier is very scattered when she teaches. She teaches archaic information that's no longer valid. Her BB notes are useless and contain no information. The only saving graces of Professor Tessier is that she marks her exams quickly and that she is willing to give one-on-one time to students requiring help. My advise don't take her class!
Notes are all over the place, not very coherent, power points online are completely useless. As another rater said, it seems she makes the lesson up as she goes along. Tough marker as well. Definitely would not recommend.
Hard marker but explained things well, very busy well her personal life. Decent lab instructor
She is the hardest marker I ever had. Literally, our class average for the lab reports were so low; the highest mark was 60% for our first one.
I assume the reason Amy is getting so many bad reviews is because of a bunch of disgruntled 1st year students who didn't do as well as they hoped. She was awesome. She was really helpful in the labs and during office hours. I would take another lab with Amy in a heart beat. Her quizzes were hard, but she grades fairly.
She is a nice lady, but an incredibly tough marker for the assignments. She's got really high expectations for intro level students. Also, she doesn't consistently go over the questions at the end of labs so you know if you did them right or not. Besides that, she's pretty helpful when doing labs though.
She thinks the lab is a lecture. She spends over an hour reviewing material unnecessary for the actual lab. While other students from other labs finish within an hour, we are always taking up the entire 3 hour lab component. .. She a nice lady doe
Amy is not the best lab instructor for first year students. She's good at explaining difficult concepts but still wants you to learn most of it on your own . She was NEVER available outside of class and tells students to come to her office to pick up assignemnts but doesn't show up. So unprofessional. She's definelty too busy with her own life.
Amy is a seasoned lab sessional at the time of this writing. She may have a busy personal life, but when she's there, it would be wise to see her for clarification on assignments and exams. She makes her expectations clear, and spends a good portion of our labs explaining the lab content. Rigorous marker. Don't hesitate to ask questions, and study.
Amy is a good lab instructor, however she does expect a lot from you and thinks you should go the extra mile. Lab reports need to be very well done in order to get above a 70 on the. Her quizzes are challenging to, you do actually need to study for them.
Really liked her as a lab instructor. Need to study for the quizzes. She usually always takes the full class time so don't expect to get out early. Ask questions about the papers to fully understand what is expected.
Not sure why everyone says she is such a tough marker. She provides clear expectations for lab reports, so if you follow the rubric you'll be fine. Amy's high expectations prepare you for higher level courses, you'll thank her for pushing you. She really cares about her students and their success. Would take a lab with her again in a heartbeat!
Amy is very helpful in the lab. I found the lab reports hard. My lab grade was similar to my lecture grade. She lectures very fast, so it is a bit hard to keep up. Her lab quizzes were very similar to the lab final.
Worst lab intrusctor i've ever had. Hardest market, and very bias. Very rude would never take another lab/class with her again. Very hard marker and DOES NOT care about her students at all.
She shows no care for her students, her quizes are impossible. She goes over useless information and makes you stay the full 3 hours for the lab. To busy with her own life. Don't recommend taking her if you want to pass.
Amy is a great lab instructor for 108, she has the kindest and sweetest heart and really does care about her students. Her test were tough, but they were fair. Make sure you go over the lab manual because somethings she will not cover in lecture will be on the quizzes or final. The test are quite long for the short amount of time given (final).
Not going to lie she does give hard quizzes but as long as you prepare for them you're fine! Her quizzes do reflect what the final is like. She's very caring if you show you're working hard for the grade you want! She doesn't explain things very well in class but if you go into her office hours definitely helps with understanding content as well!
Amy is the toughest marker that I have experienced. It seemed impossible to get a mark over 85 on the lab reports and the quizzes were extremely difficult (which was actually helpful for the final). She is sweet but I would not take a class with her again as she is unorganized and hard to reach.
I received my lab report mark back and she made some marking mistakes and when I asked her about it, she corrected her mistakes BUT she did not change my mark - I missed out on 15% because of her because she said the one thing that I messed up was extremely important, even though I got 4/5 of them right, she still gave me a 0 on the one little part
She's nice but a really tough marker - hard to do well in her class.
She helps during the labs but is a really tough marker and takes forever to mark things.
Amy is ... she is a hard one. I had her for my first (Ever) university lab. I really appreciate her teaching style and hard marking now that I am in higher level bio classes. She is awesome. She knows her stuff and she will definitely help you out when you need it. You have to put in effort, though. It's not high school; you have to earn your grade
Amy knows the content well, but doesn't relay the material as effectively to her students to the extent that it would be considered helpful. She would rush through info. while students were still doing labs making everything seem rushed and students not really knowing what to do. If you're not that good at biology, I suggest you don't take her.
Amy is a nice person and is always ready to help students during her office ours. The con part about Amy is that she is a tough marker and on top of that her quizzes are EXTREMELY HARD.
Most difficult marker I've ever had... Made it hard to succeed or even like biology.
Some reviews are actually ridiculous, people expect material to be handed to them. Amy is an outstanding lab prof that cares about her students if they show they care about their education. Yes she is a hard marker. However, it prepares you for the final exam for sure! If you are having troubles going to see her, she is more than willing to help!
Amy is a very genuine prof! She explains concepts well and is always willing to help! Bit of a tough marker but all in all a good professor, would definitely take her class again!
Amy is a decent person, she is just a very hard marker also her exams and quizzes are extremely difficult. I would not recommend her to any person. Only if desperate. Good luck...
Amy is a great professor! Yes she does mark hard for a first year class. However, being in my third year now I appreciate how hard she makes you work for your grades! She is ALWAYS willing to go over and above to help you succeed! I still go to her for help even though I'm not in her class. Highly recommend! Just ask for help if you need it!
She is very helpful when it comes to questions and makes sure everyone is understanding the material
Amy is an absolutely amazing prof! She made all concepts very clear and was very reliable answering questions outside of class. On the lab report, she took the time to add many comments in the margins for improvement. She is very passionate, knows her stuff and cares about the success of her students.
Amy really cares about her student. Her lectures for every lab were amazing and in full details. She is really helpful and provides good feed back for the lab report and the quiz.
Her exams can be tough if you aren't prepared, but other than that she is an excellent lab instructor. Provided a LOT of feedback on assignments to help us see where we went wrong. Willing to assist you when you need help.
Amy states that her tests are the most difficult out of all other lab profs, and when speaking to other lab instructors they agree that Amy's class is generally the most difficult. She is way to difficult for first years, and the lab is actually harder then the lecture. I'd strongly recommend Reem Skeik, amazing first year prof, super helpful.
She's nice and answers all you're questions. But her quizzes are hard only because she wants to prepare you for the final. She doesn't give your marks back fast. I'm still waiting on a lab report that I wrote a month ago.
I took this class with Amy in my first year, and it was the worst decision of my life. She is genuinely a nice person but lacks heavily in her teaching style. She expected the students to understand the material completely during the lab, and was vague when you asked question. A very overwhelming class for a first year student. Do not recommend.
Amy definetly makes you work for your grade. She is a really hard marker and definetly sticks to the rubric to a T. I would try to avoid her if you can, if you cant make sure you know the lab manual 100%
By far the worst lab prof at Macewan University, trust me when I say this; IF YOURE A FIRST YEAR DO NOT TAKE HER! She will make you hate the labs and make going to class a chore even though you have to show up. She marks super hard as well and her teaching style is just plain bad. Just avoid her at all costs if you want a decent gpa.
She's quite helpful when you need help on trying to understand a concept, she's also very helpful in the lab sessions. She's very tough on marking, she'd dock marks of very easily especially in the writing assignments. Very tough grader.
Great lab instructor, would recommend for any first year biology student. She's very nice and wants to see you do well. That being said you will have to put the effort in as she can be a hard marker. Provides extra practice questions and uses kahoot as a pre lab to make sure you're prepared. Overall really good prof!
Amy was a good lab prof! She was pretty thorough with explaining the labs which were pretty straight forward. Throughout the term she would mention key procedures or facts that could come up on the exams She always started the lab with a KAHOOT to recall what we learned last week and what we'd do in the current lab, which was fun and informative.
Extremely tough marker, not always available during officer hours. Tends to forget to mention things because she's already done the same lab during the week. Does not give a lot of feedback for the lab reports.
Amy is the toughest marker in histories of tough markers. She isn't completely thorough with the labs because she tends to forget things. She makes the quizzes extremely hard an long (imagine writing a 10 page quiz under 45 minutes). I feel like she finds any excuse to fail her students. She's terrible. Don't recommend.
Amy was so unfair with marking. She gave me a 0.9/2 on one of the assignments because my gel did not work. kids from other classes had the same problem as me (gel did not work) but got higher marks than me.
DO NOT TAKE AMY for first year, or even at all. I loved bio going into uni but she made me hate it, and I only had her for lab. Avoid her at all costs; if you are able to take other lab profs DO IT. She marks as if we're phD students (toughest marker & worst lab prof in all of macewan). Thats facts.
Toughest grader, to the point that it's unnecessary. Gives little feedback on your assignments so you have to go see her after every assignment which is very inconvenient. She isn't always there during office hours.
She's a really hard marker compared to most bio 107 lab profs, makes you work for every percent which isn't really that nice when its a first year course, just increased the stress. However, she's really good at teaching the labs no question and she's passionate about what she does. Go to her for constant feedback and you'll see improvement.
The devil incarnate, she marks like we're not first years but that we're 3 years into our degree. She's convinced marking hard is a "learning" experience for her students, spoiler alert: its not when it counts for 40% of your bio mark. TAKE ANYONE ELSE.
As a person, Amy by far one of the kindest professors out there. As a professor, she's pretty much garbage. She believes marking extremely hard creates a "learning experience" but that's really unfortunate because grades are 40% of your mark. You never know what she wants from you with assignments and you don't get enough time on tests either.
Amy is fabulous, super patient and kind. Shell never make you feel like youve asked a dumb question, even if you have. Goes out of her way to answer all questions and makes the lab processes clear. Very knowledgeable and wants her students to succeed.
Usually one to get on average B+ or higher. But this Lab instructor is seriously difficult to get ANY good marks, never got a grade higher than a B- She is seriously a tough marker that becomes annoyingly frustrating and straight up just unfair Its a FIRST YEAR class we ARE NOT USE TO THIS. This is the only prof ive rated something needs to be said
Building good rapport with any professor is important, but especially with Amy. It's true that she is a tough grader, but that being said, she gives clear expectations and is willing to offer help during office hours. Don't stress too much about the quizzes - just know they'll be challenging. Read the labs in advance and make a flow chart!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! (especially if its for online learning) Her assignments are not clear, everything is messy, marks way too hard, and gives the same feedback for everyone. She expects first-year students to know everything, which is even harder right now because were online. I would not recommend her to anyone.
She is one of the best lab professors I've ever had. I also had her for Bio 108 and recommend to anyone if you see her name, enroll!! She is so sweet and passionate about what she does and will help you with every step, and any questions.
Amy was available via email quite a bit. However, the whole course was a mess and they provided very minimal feedback and help for first-year students for online classes. The criteria for assignments were very unclear and overall the teaching style and assignment expectations were delivered in a very disorganized manner. VERY HARD MARKER.
I had the worst experience with this prof. She loves what she does and is very nice, but she is the hardest marker I have ever had. Going into this course she assured us that even if we have never written a scientific paper before she would give lots of feedback and try and help as much as possible. She lied. I was constantly docked marks! Unfair
I really loved Amy! she was amazing and so very helpful especially during covid. I had never written a scientific paper before but she made it a very good experience. The way the lab was designed was really enjoyable because we got to work in groups!! She is a tough marker but gives really good feedback! I 100% recommend her as a prof!
VERY TOUGH GRADER. Will give you a terrible mark but provides little to no useful feedback. Wrote my first scientific paragraph EVER and she marked it as if I was a scientist with 20 years of experience with lizards. Avoid.
Horrible marker doesnt tell you what she wants on there and provides no feedback, says is a hard marker to make you a better writer now Im at uofa writing 400lv course papers getting 90s none of her hard marking has helped me no reason for her marking being that unfair. Will tell you the rubric is for a 50% why not just tell us what you want?
I personally loved Dr. Tessier. She always provided helpful feedback and also provided tons of information before each assignment. She is very passionate about cell biology and I always had fun during her labs. She was always super helpful during the labs and never made you feel stupid when you asked a question. I would recommend her for 107!!
Great professor. Wish I also had her for cell bio. She explains everything very well and is kind. Willing to help any time during the labs, and I always had trouble with the microscopes, even as a second year. I honestly don't understand all the negative reviews. I won't be taking any more bio classes but I definitely recommend her.
Amy was by far the toughest grader I had in my first year at MacEwan. Poured my heart and soul into the 7-page lab reports we had to do and she graded us like we've been doing this for 20 years. On the bright side, she is very good at instructing the labs and is very accessible outside of class.
Rough marker for a 100-level course. Get serious, Amy.
Such a great lab instructor. Although she is quite a tough marker, her feedback on assignments is constructive. She explains the lab procedure very in-depth and is accessible if you have any questions about assignments.
Amy taught my first ever uni lab. Although she is a nice person, what was expected of us was ridiculous. Every lab was confusing, and nobody knew what was going on or what to do. The assignments were not appropriate for a first year course. Also, the lecture videos she narrates are so annoying. Speaks like she has a script and uses a weird tone
Amy is a very kind and caring professor. However, she marks you as if you are in your 5th year PhD studies. The grades given for reports and assignments are very unfair because she is such a tough grader for no reason. She expects too much for a 200 level class. Avoid her at all costs unless you want your grade to suffer.
I have her for Micrbiology.Honestly the class has not ended yet however I feel like I have analyzed her enough to write this. Amy marks the pre lab quizzes like we have a phd. She nit picks little things and writes passive aggressive comments and gives you a 0. It is so hard to get a decent mark. Her overall behaviour is really passive aggressive.
Professor Tessier is very kind and engaging with her students. She is a bit of a difficult marker but she explains concepts and any questions you have very well. She is very encouraging and I enjoyed her lab!
Her lab lectures are pretty hard and she isn't great at explaining things in the lab but she is easily reachable via email. You do a lot of partner work in this lab and it can be super annoying but I don't think that it is her fault. If I had another option I probably wouldn't take her.
Omg shes amazing. Like i was scared bc of all these other reviews but (at least in spring) the way everything is structured makes it so easy. Like the lab instructions are very straight forward, the lab manuals are near copies of the post-lab assignments, encourages students to NOT answer questions in lab. Just amazing, I have no negative comments.
Nice prof, good at explaining concepts in lab, willing to help. I found the post-labs annoying and some questions unclear. Pre-labs were do-able if you pay attention and prepare for them. practical was easy for the most part, lab final wasn't too bad (focus on reviewing the slides she gives). Would take her again, but keep in mind she marks hard.
She was a pretty good prof I would recommend her, she goes into a little bit of depth when talking about the concepts of the lab which is nice. The tests can be pretty hard and the last assignment in Bio 107 is quite difficult but shes helpful with some of the stuff on it. She also is pretty accessible.
Not sure why she has a low rating....I really enjoyed her as a prof. She is extremely caring and always, always helpful when I went to see her or asked questions in class....she takes the time to show you and explain. If you have questions, go and see her...not her job to follow you and make sure you understand. Would definitely take her again.
Was kind and helped if needed but she's an overly difficult marker. For an intro class, expectations were too high and it's reflected in the class averages. I'd recommend her only if you already have some sort of experience in the lab.
Very nice lady, and cares for the students. Her lab lectures are heavy, but she explains it well. Very accessible, and helpful too. Very tough marker tho, her tests and assignments are hard(don't do Tetrahymena for the portfolio unless you hate yourself) Besides her being a tough marker, she is a lovely lady and I have no other complaints.
