this teacher definitly had favorites, and she graded very hard, i wouldnt reccomend taking this class for 3 hours, but twice a week isnt too bad. your grade is based mostly upon attendance and about 4 pretty easy papers.
Ms. Towne is a tough grader but, she is extremely helpful. I took comp1 at another school and Ms. Towne is 100 times better. She actually seems to care if we write well in class. I highly recommend you take her classes, she will help you be a better communicator!

Very disapointed in her honustley. She was very cool but she gave no leway at all. I have to retake the course becuase she gave me a c- on my final paper. I have very sour feeling about her. She is cool but wow! She definatley picks favoriots so i recommend just paying attention in class and dont make friends.

Awesome teacher. She teaches in ways that relate to the students. Grades hard, but she is very helpful and if you use all of the techniques she gives then it's a breeze. Overall an awesome teacher
Really cool teacher, doesn't grade to easy but she will really help you if you ask for it. Just ask questions and be involved with class discussions, but I would reccomend her.
Excellent professor with a great sense of humor. Challenging course but definately worth it. She grades tough, but you get plenty of chances to improve. I would definately recommend this class.

Hard class but it does improve your writing. She is a lil hard to get a hold of and she has a sour sense of sarcasm. She doesn't really teach a lot, you just do group stuff all the time. Wouldn't recommend her unless you wanna work hard and do group stuff all the time.
Poor teacher, she picks favorites.Not a very fair grader, extremely hard to pass and she loves to take smoke breaks and cuss. Only good thing is that she may improve your writing a bit, but that's what the Writing Center is for.

If your looking for an easy A don't take her. She is nice but she grades very harshly. If your good a writing you may do well. I'm not a good writer so I struggled a lot.
Her assignments are way to difficult and she expects WAY too much from students. Classes are boring, but she can make you laugh.
I highly recommend no one take any course with Amy Towne. She is completely unfit for teaching and is incompetent on all levels. She makes racially charged statements which demean entire cultures. She is also extremely lazy when it comes to course material. We watch films in class that she has not yet viewed and she makes stuff up on the spot.
Insanely tough/unfair grader! Additionally, she was featured on a television news report about her 'racially' charged comments. I would reconmend everyone stay away from taking her course.
She is hard but very down to earth. She will work with you about due dates and late assignments. If you dont mind working hard you will like her. Just stay on top of your work and you will be fine!
Do not take her!! Very blatantly favors the loud obnoxious students who have already had her. Does not give clear directions on an assignment until it has already been turned in. Makes racial/religious comments. I have never gotten below an A in any english course and am barely passing with a C in this class.
If you want to spend hour after hour writing useless papers for such a useless class, go head. She's a great person and seems to have a lot of experience. Her grading is extremely tough and her sarcasm becomes annoying. DON'T DO IT!

Amy knows her stuff. Shes very fair and is easy to reach outside of class. I enjoyed it. It's not an easy "A" but who cares. It's intresting!
I took her for comp II. Extremely nice teacher! Excessive writing expected. If you do your work & pay attention to her instructions, easy grade. Marks on papers due throughout the semester will show you exactly what she expects on the final. I received A's on most my papers, & an A+ on my research paper. Strong writers only should take this class
Worst class ever. Professor Towne sucks as a teacher and her class is boring. The literature was based around African American lit even though she was white. She is a prejudice person and states things that she dislikes about the other races. Makes class a little uncomfortable sometimes. Would not recommend for anyone to take.
She is extremely unorganized, is usually late and easily sidetracked. She uses a lot of favoritism.

LOTS of group work. Just about every class you get into groups, its really easy stuff though. She grades pretty tough on essays but if you go to the writing center you'll be fine. Shes pretty cool, just come to class, do the readings and work hard on the essays
Some people should not be teachers and Ms. Towne is one of them. While she might posses the knowledge required to teach the subject, she lacks the personal skills that create a great learning environment for students. I have always enjoyed subjects related to english, but I am miserable in this class.Her grading is harsh and very unforgiving.AVOID!
Not only is professor Towne a very poor teacher, shes's just plain unfriendly. Avoid this class at all cost. I'm serious, very serious. She's a damn nut.
A lot of students state that this teacher is unfriendly or does not create a good work environment. Tough luck. It is time everyone got there head out of the gutter and embraced the real world. She prepares you for things to come. Personally one of my favorite teachers because I know that anything that I am taught will be used again in my lifetime

Mrs. Towne's style of teaching is a style of its' own. In this class she was teaching us how to write a proper argumentative paper which we would see all through college. This teaching helped me understand the process and now I can write a 5-10 page paper easily! If you are looking for a challenge and aren't afraid to work hard, Choose Towne!!
Not easy and be ready for sarcasm but doses of reality and preparation for the real world. One of my favorites!
I'm taking this class now and I hate it. I thought she was going to be a good teacher but after I got my grade back for my essay, I realized that I was wrong. I did everything she asked on my draft and she said I had a good start, but then I get a D. She says my paper doesn't make sense. She is really hard, I don't suggest taking this class.
I am taking this class now and she is the worst professor ive ever had. She constantly critizes about writing but doesnt help fix the problems. And as far as emailing her, forget it, its like writing an email to the president. and she will tell u something is good then turn around and give u a bad grade... DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
be prepaired to think way out side the box. she expects you to write a paper how a professor would write it. she doesn't care is you know how to do a basic 5 paragraph essay. SHE WILL WANT MORE!!!! expect to go into detail on everything you write about for each paragraph. She doesn't care how hard you try, she only cares if you do it right.
I think Ms. Towne was a great teacher! It is a literature class, so be prepared to go into great depth analyzing short fiction, poetry and drama, but she helps you understand the literature and really makes you think. Bring your book to class and be prepared to write many essays/reading responses and do a group presentation.
It's not the professor that is the problem, it's the lazy students. Yes, the teacher is an extremely hard grader. But, if you go to the writing center she knows and you'll get a better grade. This is a class that separates the weak from the strong and shows you high school easy was a thing of the past.
I'd rather sit on a hot fire stoker than be face to face with this woman for another 5 minutes of my life. "When starting to write a paper, write down the first 5 ideas that come to you ...then throw them away because that's where they belong. I don't want to grade papers that all look alike." Fantastic idea for her, not as helpful for TEACHING.
I'll admit that she is a boring teacher, but you just have to answer her questions and time goes fast. She is an extremely hard grader. Dont try to make your papers sound smart, she just gives you f's. Just write what you think it means and you should do fine. She is also pretty lazy and you really dont do much but talk in the class.
not that hard if you take the time to actually do the assignments to the best of your ability. I like the comment further down about "separating the weak from the strong". THIS CLASS IS NOT HARD. its pretty much an intro level class.
As an English Major, I expected to do well in this class. I was rather surprised when my 1st draft of the research paper got a D and the 2nd got a 0. She accused me of plagiarising, didn't bother to give proof, and wouldn't listen. Another student had the same problem, even after going to the writing center and completely rewriting the paper.
She's very helpful in every way. She's a pretty tough grader, but you know where you stand. If you do the work then you will do well. Class is interesting and relevant, and you can learn a lot here.
She's a great teacher! If you take notes and do the work its an easy class. She likes students who participate, If you show effort she'll like you and you'll get a good grade.
i had her during summer B so 6 weeks to write over 4 papers was difficult and she is a tough grader, but great teach and very fair. i had to work hard and had limited time but managed to get an A :)
Ms. Towne does not respond to emails pertaining to the online class promptly. Does not post grades until weeks after an assignment was due, and is possibly the harshest grader I have ever had. I enjoy writing and have always tried my best in previous classes and received wonderful feedback from my professors, but Ms. Towne is far too critical.
Grades very harsh. Recommends the writing lab where the staff is not familiar with her teaching styles. Offer draft drop box, once recommended corrections are done papers are barely passing.
To get a good grade in her class your essays must be perfect and reviewed multiple times. Also, make sure to add everything she tells you to add to your essay. Overall she is a very difficult teacher to have.

She is an English language snob. I am a perpetual A+ student and am not lazy by any means. Trust me when I say you are better off with another professor. My sister who is an English major helped me with some of professor Towne's assignments and I managed to pass with a B. Honestly if it wasnt for that I would have failed the course. RUN & RUN FAST!
A writing class should not be the most difficult class of the semester. The amount of work is fine, but her grading harshness is unreal. I suggest another professor.
Taking the class now. By far the most awful teacher at FGCU. Literature is supposed to be a class where you can interpret what you think the writing means if you can back it up. She is a very her way or the highway lady. She will not help you. Do not take her unless you want to fail.
By far the least friendliest person I've ever met. She never smiles, laughs, or jokes around it's like she's seriously running a boot camp. Everything has to be done her way or it's just completely wrong you have no opinion in this class.
It is not the teacher that is the problem, it is the lazy students. It's not an easy class but you will actually learn things that are useful later on. It's nice to have a required course that's not a waste of time FOR A CHANGE.
She grades so hard! Not nice, she gives zeros like its going out of style. DO NOT TAKE HER! I work full time and send emails and letters on a daily basis, never have I ever received such bad grades before this teacher.... and I am a finance major.
While she is a tough grader, Mrs. Towne is probably the best professor for this class. She is sarcastic, very funny, and she's tough when she needs to be. Her papers can be a bit boring but she strives to improve your writing. I'd recommend her to anyone who's up for the challenge. USE OFFICE HOURS!
Really hard class. This is a beginner writing class for freshman, she should not be grading papers as if we are graduate students. Very boring, only fun part was watching the movie in her class. But the paper we had to write for it sucked. She needs to realize she is teaching people who are in college for the first time.

AVOID this professor! At all costs! I regret not listening to my fellow students who posted before me. She is a tough grader, I am an A paper writer and I did not get anything above a C. She isn't very clear and doesn't like helping. When asked a question she will give you the run around, which wastes her time and the students time.
She is such a hard grader! Quizzes are easy if you read, tests are not too hard but the papers will kill you! I went to the writing center and STILL got a c-!!!! she gives you no explanation on what she wants from you and gives you no slack on the papers.

If you can't drop the class, prove to her that you're putting in effort. Class got easier for me after she realized how hard I was trying. It IS possible to get an A, but it's damn difficult and it has a lot to do with how much she likes you. Sucking up will backfire; be genuine and talk to her outside of class, and you'll have an easier time.
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had. Gives vague instructions and makes you read from the book, but then gives you snappy responses when giving feedback on papers essentially saying she wanted it her way rather than what we learned from the text. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Professor Towne is a tough teacher. If you don't show up to her class you will fail. The essay's are very challenging and I personally went to the writing center more than I could count, but be prepared to work hard for your grade. Other than that she is nice and helpful if you go to her office hours or after class for questions.
I've always been a strong writer, or so I've been told. Nearly cried when I saw I got a "C" on my first paper. TOUGH GRADER INDEED. Tests are fairly easy if you read the things she tells you to, but prepare to re-re-re-do every paper and go to the writing center every day. Very snappy at some points so beware her attitude.

This is the absolute worst teacher I've ever had since kindergarten. Instructions are very unclear and vague. Finds mistakes is everything you say or do. Class is a waste of time because she is lazy. Very mean and unhelpful lady. I haven't learned a single thing in that class. She makes me hate writing. STAY AWAY PLEASE
It seems as she enjoys watching her students fail. Never has anything nice to say and gives extremely vague directions on what she wants, then says you aren't doing it how she wanted. No matter how hard you try it won't change anything, she'll still shut down every paper you write. I should have listened to the reviews before I took this class..
I think the one thing you should know before taking her class is she does not care about you, I really do not think she cares about herself. She decided to give me a 0 on something I did and refused to accept a late hard copy despite the fact I had turned it in online a week before. She also just doesn't respond to emails concerning grades.
You have to go into her class having knowledge of how to read and interpret HER way, which makes her assignments very hard to pass. You have a quiz every class after 2 readings every week, then after she explains to the class what the ACTUAL theme is which then gives the class terrible grades. The class goes on for centuries. No real breaks.
Initially it seemed like a great class. She was very understanding and lenient. Starting with the second to last paper she completely changed. She expected complete perfection. What was correct or not mentioned in the first assignments were now causing you to fail with two weeks left in the semester. Does not seem like she wants to teach.
Ugh. Towne is the worst. She does not care if you do not understand the material and expects you to know how to analyze themes without teaching you how to dot it. If you dont have the same opinion as her, youre wrong.
For Intro to Lit, she was so unorganized, quizzes every class, lots of readings for hw and unclear about assignments, due dates, etc. Your answers for quizzes/exams will never satisfy her. She talks in a monotone voice and comments rudely on your thinking. You won't ever leave class early but you will stay late!
I don't know where to start. She is bad in the sort that she doesn't tell you what to do and expects it to be done. She talks in a very monotone voice that is very boring but will raise her voice at you if you have a different opinion than her. She is unorganized and strict. If you want a high GPA don't take this class. I had her for LIt 2000
Very tough grader, if you ask for more feedback on your paper she will just tell you to look at her comments and figure it out why you got the grade you got. Super vague responses to anything you ask. If you do everything she asks you will still do horrible. I regret taking her class immensely!!!! DONT DO IT. SHE WILL RUIN YOUR GPA AND SELF ESTEEM

Gave me a 0 out of 50 on a paper because I used too many "online sources", granted my topic is super current and therefore the only resources available on it were online. Also gave me a 1 on a good assignment and told me that trying to save my grade was pointless. Very rude human
Literally the worst professor Ive ever encountered. So rude, refuses to help. I considered studying journalism & had many essay scholarships, Im a pretty decent writer. This lady wouldnt approve any of my thesis statements & when I messaged asking for help, she told me to refer back to the assignment instructions. Save your money, shes awful.
BIg no, would recommend take a different professor for Comp 1. Towne is not accessible outside of class and is very picky when it comes to how papers are written. She made this class far more difficult than it needed to be.
Very unorganized. Has random things due on random days. Due dates change and are confusing. Class set up online confusing. She grades writing very harshly and specifically. Needs to be perfect. Get ready to write a lot and find a ton of sources.
She is very passive with her words and is a tough grader because she is never very clear on what she wants to be done. We had assigned readings from the book and she only tested us once on it. Cancels class with only 20-30 minutes before. once even had us sitting there for 40 minutes because she didn't show up before we decided to leave as a class.
This is probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Does not respond to emails. Takes three weeks to grade assignments and provides literally zero feedback... The class average is usually around 72% or lower. If you ask for help, she will give you reasons why she cant help. Honestly, she wants you to fail, does not care about the success of students

this teacher is very hard to converse with, half the time I have no idea what she's talking about. gets frustrated when students are confused and barely ever responds when a student needs help. gives quizzes on material we don't know anything about because she's unclear in her instruction on what she wants us to do. worst class, bad professor. 0/10
Gives little to no instruction on assignments, and when you fail the assignment, she tells you that you did not try hard enough. Also deletes assignment submission and gives a 0, then proceeds to tell you that you never turned it in.
Professor Towne is very interesting and opinionated. The class can be confusing and unorganized but if you do all the work you should be fine. If you like things more structured I wouldnt take her class.
Unorganized from the start. Will change essay requirements last minute and act like we knew she changed it. She confuses her classes with other classes. She will post a submission box on canvas and it will not let anyone submit to it and she wont change it until last minute before due date. Good thing is, if you do the work and show up you are fine
Professor Towne will be your best friend and look out for you as long as you are attentive in class and show effort. She is harsh when it comes to due dates but these are all things you should already follow so besides that she can get a bit confusing when it comes to topics on assignments but is will answer your questions

If you dare put the word "I" in your paper she will take points off and say "AcAdeMiC wRiTinG iS reQUir3d"
You do not want to have this teacher for many reasons. First off she takes forever to answer emails every time and she is very vague with her answers. The group break rooms we do tend to be pointless and most of her assignments are pointless. She is unorganized and always changes her rubric. If you miss one class you are screwed.
the way she wants her papers written is very specific& different, but if you follow her rubrics you will get at least an 85. don't have to go to every class but if you skip a lot you will be very confused. very little homework and she has students revise the paper multiple times to get a better grade. if you do it the way she likes it its an easy A

She is a very difficult grader and you have to be very careful to ensure that everything is grammatically correct and follows the guidelines. One thing I did like is that she was willing to work with you and she had a 24 hour late policy for all assignments. I would take her again.
I liked Prof. Towne but I can see where people don't like her as much. She's definitely not an "easy A" kind of teacher but she teaches proper formatting and grammar and it definitely has helped me moving on. Im in the nursing program and have to use APA formatting and with her being so specific on it, it has definitely helped.
Hated this class! Also Professor Towne is available if you ever need help but her emails come off as harsh and she grades tough. Just beware of this class. If you keep up in the class too you will be fine
Prof. Towne has a specific writing style she prefers, but if you engage with it, you can do well. Use Unstuckstudy and avoid 'I' for best results.
Awful, awful teacher... I was in her online class. She graded the wrong attempt of a quiz, I asked her why, and she proceeded to lie about leaving specific comments about the quiz (that she didn't leave) and about me not answering question 6. When confronted with proof against her claims, she ghosted me. Students, drop out now before it's too late.
If you want to be lazy than skip this class for sure. If you want to learn something worthwhile than take it. She doesn't play games and she doesn't fall for BS, but if you're trying she ill help you and you will get a good grade.
- was very unorganized -first 3 weeks of class she was quizzing us on last editions textbook even when the syllabus stated the new one was needed -syllabus rarely matched up with what took place throughout the course -quizzes were often incomplete or incorrect -would then say she meant to change them and did not like if you worked ahead.
Please avoid at all costs. Comp 2 should NOT be this difficult. DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. the good reviews are lies and the only reason you EVER wanna end up with this teacher is if you absolutely hate your life, you had your warning.
She's a strict grader but always clear about her expectations. Materials and resources are easy to access. Each week she gives a short open-note quiz on that week's assignments for extra points if you stay current. She's very accessible and direct—often blunt, but consistently fair. Highly recommend!
