She doesnt understand what she's teaching
ecxellent professor very kind and helpful makes course interesting
excellent professor, very helpful and kind, very knowledgeable. she sometimes tries to make things more simple for us than they really are, but i think many students expect this
her assignments are definately slighlty hard but she is not a bad prof, the material is itself hard and she makes it ineresting.also she is very helpful and explains well
Like most classes, if you show up and pay attention, you'll find minimal difficulty.
5 Quizzes, she drops one. 2 Papers worth 45% and one final worth 15%. The final was cumulative, but were just slight variations from past quizzes. She provides a study sheet, so if you take good notes and study from the sheet, you should do fine on the quizzes. The papers were a bit off, I'm not sure what she's looking for.
Hardest course I've ever taken. Notes do not match the material on quizzes. You must read the material numerous times to understand. She knows what she's teaching, but it's hard for a student to understand. Not recommended for an intro class.
DO NOT TAKE. She makes quizzes way too complicated and tricky. One question was so easy most everyone missed it because thats just how her quizzes are. She thinks, "C's and B's are good grades" actual quote. She needed to make one of the exams communal (every one could talk to anyone during the test) because too many people were falling them. BAD
Not horrible. She knows the subject, but does not know how to pass the knowledge to her students. I would not take her again.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!She struggles to explain the materials. She does not know how to teach and explain things. She makes us more confused.I don't understand why she's teaching the course.Quiz every week(it's ridiculous ans acummalative exam (crazy!!).The book is super borring and super hard to understand!!
I liker her classes and think shes one smart lady. Weekly quizzes a bit of a pain but they'r helping me learn!!
She is a good professor. I think the weekly quizes were very helpful especially to study for the final which is work very little only 15 %. She tries to explain everything so that everyone understands. Not easy buttt def. anyone can get an A if u come everyday and try
Got an A without buying text book. Don't need to take notes, just listen and remember for final. Prof has photographic memory. Quizzes are hard, but you get 50 points just for taking them. Final is rehash of old quizzes. One paper + rewrite. Easy A if you try - B- if you don't.
Hard but very good
She is a good professor. You dont need to buy the txtbook. try 2 atend the classes n u r done!!
She's a nice lady, but it was truly a struggle to stay awake during her class. We had a lot of quizzes, which were all multiple choice, and two papers. She's a pretty hard grader for the papers, but the quizzes are pretty much drawn from what she says during class. It's not an easy A class, but it's also not impossible.
Easy quizzes to build up your grade. 15 quizzes that make up 65% of your grade, 35% final and a pass/fail paper. Just attend class and ace the quizzes. Don't need textbook.
Save your GPA DON'T take her please Save yourself the time and the pain. The person below me DOESN'T is LYING to you. You can work your butt off and still get a bad grade. Quizzes are given almost every class. Forgot to mention 1 paper that is pass/fail. Each day your paper has a failing grade it's -2% of your FINAL GRADE. Fair huh ? Thanks alot !
Extremly easy class!!! no need to buy textbook. just listen and take notes. 15 quizzes drops the lowest 2. Final is not hard at all. An easy A.
Don't take her. She has way too much quizzes and very bad at explaining the material. The class is extremly boring.
To be honest, I was asleep for the most part of the class every day. I attained a B in this class without the textbook and without trying. And I'm not that smart of a dude. She gives weekly quizzes. The best part about that is that she pretty much uses the same questions on the final. Very nice and helpgul teacher. She also knows what she's saying.
She is a nice person and she is comical, but her class is boring. I have spent a few classes napping just because it doesnt keep my interest. In the beginning, its fun, but later its boring. She gives weekly quizzes, a pass/fail paper(which isnt that easy), and a final thats multiple choice. I sort of recommend her.Eh. Not the best. Not the worst.
She is an awesome teacher, she has a great personality. Shes quite helpful too. Just quizzes every week, 1 paper assignment, no midterm, and final has only multiple choice! loved her.
Just take notes and u'll be fine. DONT buy textbook, you can find materials on the web. Gives weekly quizzes (final has the same questions as quizzes) 1 paper Pass/fail bases (she didnt fail anyone.Easy class. Very sweet prof.
Don't need a book, though need good class notes. Take all the quizes. Very easy A. The paper is easy 2 pages pass/fail.
Shes pretty passionate about her teaching and what she's teaching. Definitely knows her stuff. She gives quizzes for attendance record but she always answers questions you have before giving the quiz. She is funny and makes the subject interesting. Great artist~! Just read the materials (not alot) on blackboard and you'll be fine.
She's funny and passionate about her teaching and what she's teaching. Quizzes are easy if you read the material(not a lot) and she answers any questions prior to quizzes.
she is not a easy prof.its very hard to get PASS in the pass/fail paper, lec are boring, its very easy to get C in this course because she gives some free points in every quizes but its really really hard to bet B+ n above.i m not recommending her.
shes a nice lady but tough grader for paper. -1% for each day late. random quizzes on readings but gives free points. she'll tell you if she's giving a quiz in the beginning of class and you can ask questions. classes get pretty boring sometimes. dont really recommend. not best, not worst. hard A but probably not impossible.
She's easy, doesn't grade paper(just pass/fail) quizzes (drops the lowest scores) and one exam. Very easy class and she's a generous grader. Cant believe ppl are complaining.
It was a privilege to be in her memory and mind capstone course. She is one of the best professors at Baruch college. There were no surprises, she is very fair when it comes to grading. Class was boring at times but it was mostly due to the material. Her class really makes you think philosophically. Thanks for a wonderful semester Amy. -Ron
An Amazing professor was very helpful and I can't believe how she explains thing, just makes it so understandable and clear. There is no txtbook so you save money there and she makes the class interesting and her examples are the best totally worth it to take her. Take this from a person who hated philosophy until he took her.
not really easy. she's not a mean teacher either. she's really nice, but very bouncy and can't really stay on a topic. she doesnt give good examples at all. her classes are soo boring, and if one person gets it, then she thinks everyone get's it.
Really nice professor. Energetic & passionate about philosophy. Material is a bit boring and concepts are a bit hard to grasp, but she's really intelligent. It's hard to stay awake in her class, but do the readings and take down notes and you'll do fine. The quizzes are good for refreshing your memory, and she drops the lowest quiz grade.
Very nice, but difficult. Quiz every week, 10 mult. choice but don't let that fool you; they're extremely difficult. One paper (that I got an A on, don't ask me how) where you have to prove a philosophical argument, and a mult. choice final. She's sort of a pseudo intellect, but nice. I just had no interest in PHI whatsoever, so it bored me.
Easy and fun professor to take. Very bouncy and lively, gives amazing examples and its just so easy to understand the material. Quizzes every week are extremely easy, easy final paper with a rewrite. Overall a fun teacher to have. Loved every minute of taking her class, participate and she gives free 3% on your grade. Take her for a good time.
she is the best professor ever!she is clear, gives a lot of examples during the lecture, and funny.you won't fall asleep as long as you keep up with her and try to absorb what she's saying.she's trying to make material as easy as she can.15 quizzes, free points (3-4 of 10) just for statistical questions, 1 paper, 1 final similar to quizzes.take her!!!
She gives 1-2 pop quizzes a week so attendance is mandatory. She is a really good professor and encourages everyone to give their opinions, even if it puts the class off schedule. Show up, participate and take excellent notes and you will do fine. No textbook required.
Great Professor!!! textbook is not required. No midterm. just weekly quizes, which are exactly from the notes in class, and 1 Paper. Final is curved. I highly recommend her! TAKE HER.
If you are an internationanl student.. don't take her class.
This class seems a little intimating at first. You know Phil is hard to digest and absorb. However, I really like Prof. Amy's personality and passion about teaching phil. She's a great teach but subject is just uneasy and boring. Weekly quiz is crucial part of your grade, one 3page paper, and a cumulative final.
Probably the most boring class I've ever taken in my life. Even calculus wasn't as bad. She's a friendly teacher, but she does the same thing EVERY DAY. Talking for and hour and 15 minutes every day about Descartes is absolutely dreadful. The weekly quizzes are relatively simple, but are annoying to do. She NEVER ends class early, either.
She has a corky but not out of the ordinary personality. The workload is light and if you spend time on the readings you'll pass the 3 tests and the final. Lord bless her she tries to be clear, but the readings are better for understanding the material.
few quizs, one final essay and one final, if you take the note in the class, u will pass the quiz and final easily, and the essay i dont think it's hard, because i got an A, and i am an international student, i coudnt even believe it when i got the grade. I think she is pretty good, and if you can work hard then choose her.
one of the most boring classes ever. The only good thing was that you don't have to buy books. She is really nice but the way she explain things is just extremely boring. laptops are not allowed.
She's a really nice professor, and tries to make the subject easy and understandable for everyone. Just put some effort in and you should be fine
At first I was not interested at all to take this class. Professor made the class very easy and clear. There are 10 quizzes and a couple of essays. I did very well in her class
I was distraught after taking her class because I thought philosophy would open my mind and understanding to certain unresolved topics. But I realized that it's a fantasy & was discouraged from engaging in meaningful conversation after realizing that her counterargument were mostly begging the question and her essay remarks weren't helpful either.
Nice professor, but many little jokes that sometimes make lectures confusing - you constantly have to pay close attention to what she is saying. Also, to some extent she has her own ideas about how a paper should be structured. I never really knew what kind of criticism I would receive on my work, and what would be 'good' or 'bad' in her view.
horrible professor, so much work for an intro course
Professor Trautwein has a great sense of humor which makes her classes very enjoyable. She does not make you feel like there is only one way about things (as some Philosophy professors might). She will explain anything that you ask her to and does not belittle any questions or responses. To top things off, she is VERY knowledgable and well-rounded.
Professor Trautwein is very nice and very knowledgable in her area of study. She gives at least one quiz a week along with 8 short assignments a term paper and a final. Fair grader. Class can get confusing but she is always willing to answer questions
Trautwein is a great prof. She is very intelligent, and will challenge you. If you're looking for an easy A this might not be the class, but if you're genuinely interested in philosophy you'll love her class. Short Quizzes every week, short arguments and evaluation, 1 paper, and a final. She's a fair grader, and gives points for taking the quiz.
I took Trautwein my first semester and she was great. Her classes can be a bit long cause it's a lecture and review of our readings, but she can make it pretty fun. She's really approachable, so if you have any questions, she can usually answer them. No textbook, just beware of weekly pop quizzes. They're easy, but reading assignments help.
She clearly knows her stuff but is very disorganized regarding notes, expectations, and how students are evaluated/graded. She is a harsh grader. Save yourself the frustration and take something else.
Its an easy class if and only if you can keep it. Its pretty disorganized and she's a tough grader. Readings were given so thats a plus and one less text book to buy. But do invest time into it
I was excited for my first philosophy class but after thisI don't think I will take it again. Maybe it's because she wont be teaching again next semester and didnt care but this class was a pain and I feel liek I should have gotten a higher grade.
Honestly, I wouldn't take the class again if I didn't have to but this was class was fairly interesting. I thought I wouldn't like it but I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. She is a tough grader and there is a LOT of reading and weekly quizzes BUT there are not midterms/finals which I found more helpful for me. Participation helps a lot!
You come into this course hoping for the best, and after the first two classes, you automatically feel obligated to drop the course. Unorganized notes based on readings she basically goes over in class. Extreme amount of writing for this course and also surprise quizzes so you basically need to go to every class.
Her lectures are really interesting and she has alot of good arguments that defend what she says in class and gives you a practical way about thinking about philosophy. But her tests and quizes are really hard because you really dont know what is going to be on them. This was one of the hardest intro classes i have ever taken.
Amy is a good teacher but she hardly ever explains her reasoning behind the arguments in the class. My whole class was confused the whole time and then she tests on things that were never explained thoroughly. Her exams are super difficult as well since everything is blurry. Really boring as well. Dont take this class it killed my GPA!
Shes a good professor because she knows her work. She gives quizzes often but there worth only 5%. I think she is logical on how she grades because of how its structured. Take alot of notes and just do good on her test. She gives as much feedback you need. A fast grader so she doesn't make you wait. You know where you are at in her class
She's an okay professor. Worked my butt off and didn't get the grade I wanted. Got higher than 90's on all of her tests but still managed to get a B+. You have to put in work for this class, and pay attention every day. Tests can get confusing. I was so sure I was going to get an A, she disappointed and doesn't realize that we are not philosophers
If you're a slacker don't take this class. If you're looking for an easy A with little to no work don't take this class. If you're interested in learning and engaging in dialogue that will foster a new way of thinking I highly recommend her. There's a method to her madness and if you're genuinely interested you won't regret taking her. Recommend.
I would avoid this professor and would take it with someone else. She makes the lectures very confusing and the subject hard to understand. She gives 3 exams and a final which are all multiple choice. Each worth 15% percent. Also she assigns one paper for the entire semester.
Really intelligent professor. I felt like I learned a lot from the class and she really expanded my mind. No big tests, so as long as you do your work you will get an A.
Absolutely fantastic professor. Made the class engaging and facilitated some really deep discussions. No tests, 1-2 pop quizzes a week, 2 5 page essays. PARTICIPATE. She'll recognize the effort you're putting into the class and reward you accordingly. Would 100% take again.
She gives about 1 to 2 quizzes a week and they are extremely wordy. The whole class consisted of her speaking about a topic in philosophy along with a specific philosopher and class discussion. As a person who did not like philosophy to begin with, this class just made me dislike it even more.
Very knowledgeable about large realms of philosophy. Impressive depth to her classes. She lectures at a relatively high level so make sure to keep extensive notes in case you can't logically follow the lecture. Ask questions and participate, she recognizes this. Makes it easy to study and provides lots of material in Blackboard. Responds to emails.
Never had a more horrible experience before. Maybe because I had high expectations about a person that is supposed to be very insightful in philosophy, but all she could use as an example in philosophy was her red water bottle. Awful exams, awful reading materials. Didn't learn anything interesting.
Her entire class is just lectures. The class was a drag for me. I felt like not going multiple times... and I didn't. So i was lost for most of the year. Not a fun class. You will most likely hate it. And guess what? You will have a POP QUIZ every week. This is supposed to be an easy extra class but all it did was destroy my GPA.
She lectures all day every day and it's extremely boring. Be prepared to do a lot of boring reading and have pop quizzes frequently- but always when you least expect it. Expects you to master topics after one class (during the class) and gives quizzes directly after the lesson. Compares every philosophical topic to her red water bottle.
Very long lectures that I felt went on for HOURS. I thought philosophy was going to be a really cool class but it was the complete opposite. My high school philosophy class was more engaging and excited. Terrible essays and evaluations and what not
Don't take, GPA killer. The final grade average is 75.
Makes you feel uncomfortable. One of those classes that you think you wont have to study for but sneaks up on you when you start getting bad grades. Pop quizzes every few classes. Boring lectures that will make you want to jump out the window, I personally timed the lighting of the MetLife building sign... 5 O'Clock... in the fall
Yes, there will be a good amount of reading (welcome to baruch). If you want an "easy A" perhaps you should look elsewhere. If you enjoy philosophy and like to participate in class discussions then you should take her class. Participate, read, and show up and you'll do fine. She is one of the few professors that actually cares about her students.
Professor Trautwein is a very quirky happy professor even though the class is rigorous. She lets you make up 2 quizzes in the semester, one in the first half and one in the second half. Prepare for one to two quizzes every week. Quizzes right after the lecture, so you have to pay attention to the lecture because questions are all based on that.
Trautwein is okay. She is very knowledgeable about philosophy. This semester I felt that the class was disorganized and some of us were confused about the concepts. 4 tests in total, 2 assignments and participation is your grade. Each test is 15 percent and 15 percent for the assignments. It is a ethical theories and fallacies class. Hard A, easy B
Terrible Experience. Boring class. Disorganized. Have to be in class. Pop-quizzes. Easy grade if you do well on quizzes and papers. Kills me to sit here for the hour and 15 minutes though. Class is dragged out.
I didn't enjoy the class. Papers, pop quizes, exams, boring lectures, LONG readings, Name it all. I love discussing philosophy and was considering a major. But not anymore. If this is what the other philosophy classes are going to me like, im out.
It was a good class and she's really nice but the lecture can be super draining. 1 hour and 15 minutes of nothing but talking in a silent room. Not really engaging. No final or midterm. 4 options of assignments throughout the semester and you only have to complete 2. Easy A but boring.
She really doesnt like trump. We got that on the first day but she uses him in the trolly example lmao. Class is boring af and she gives pop quizzes. I didnt do the readings and did well, just pay attention and take good notes you should be fine.
Prof Trautwein is very boring, but she cares about her students. No final/midterm, 2 essays (1 P/F, 1 graded), 4 exams. Drops lowest exam score. Accessible outside of class. Lots of reading. PARTICIPATE! Curves exam grades. Make sure to take good notes.
Professor Trautwein is alright overall. Her lectures are very long and admittedly quite boring at times, but her tests are relatively straight forward. Study from her notes and you'll pass. Try not to skip class either. The only issue is that it can get hard to pay attention sometimes because she rambles on for the entire class period.
Really great professor! Each class was super interesting and she's super kind. She didn't give too much reading, and not many tests. Highly recommend!
I don't know what is wrong with people who complain about the lectures and her classes in general. An incredibly intelligent, friendly professor who is passionate about philosophy and cares about her students. Just read the required readings and you will be glad to be in her class
She has no idea what she is teaching or saying half the time. She starts rambling constantly about unrelated things. She assigns three tests for which she does not post any of the notes for. She genuinely does not teach what she puts on the tests. She expects you to sit there thinking for hours. She assigns 2 papers for which she grades harshly.
Professor Trautwein gives 3 short arguments and write reviews to your peers, 3 exams, but can take a make-up exam if you have a very low score to replace it. Lots of reading to do. Lectures are very important for the exams. No final. Professor is good and cares for us to pass.
The Professor seems like she cares about her students. Her office hours are helpful! Three total tests. Tests take up to 51% of your grade so make sure to go to all the classes. Her classes can be boring sometimes but she uses real situations to help make it interesting. Also she takes plagiarism very seriously so make sure to cite everything!!
The class could use more class interaction and the information we need for exams and papers are kind of thrown in throughout the lecture. If you do not take notes and do not plan on attending class this is not the class for you. Definitely not and easy A, especially if Philosophy is not your major.
She is a really nice professor, cares about her students and funny. Lectures get boring and talks the entire class time but you have to take notes because test is based on the lectures. Short arguments are very easy. I recommend this class.
Her lectures are all talking and conversation with no slideshows or anything. She just writes on the whiteboard the whole time so definitely take your own notes. The short arguments are easy, and as long as you make an honest effort you'll be okay. She is very nice and I like that she goes over the test answers right after everyone finishes!
Amazing person, participation is encouraged as it helps run the class (no cold calling or forced participation which is nice). My concern is that her explanations are a little hard to follow and her note-taking is a little messy. Gives good curves and no final, has optional 4th test to replace lowest test grade. gives answers to test right after
Professor Trautwein is a good professor, but her lectures are often all over the place. She is funny and caring, but writes very small on the board and is very hard to follow during class. Be prepared to teach yourself certain terms if you decide to not go to office hours. Overall I had an OK experience and learned a bit.
Most of her lectures were rambling even though she does write important points on the board. Our grade was mainly based just on 3 papers and 3 exams. A lot of reading and no extra credit. Not an easy A but if you turn everything in on time and participate you'll be fine.
shes ok, rambles and writes a lot of stuff on a whiteboard and moves kinda quick. the concepts are not hard but its hard to pay attention cuz shes just so boring and she also gives a lot of pop quizzes. shes really strict about plagiarism so dont plagiarize LOOL. love the lady though shes sweet i just wouldnt take her again though
She doesn't check for attendance, but she gives a quiz nearly every class so u should kinda show up. Agreed with the other points, she does talk a lot and doesn't write everything on the board. SO as long you get used to listening to her all class, you'll do fine on the quizzes. If you take notes on what she says, you'll do fine on the final paper.
She is a great professor, she writes everything on the board, so just pay attention and pop quizzes will be easy.
She is an excellent professor in general; but, you must pay attention and attend every class since she assigns pop quizzes, which, contrary to popular belief, do improve the grade point average. Because you are given all of the answers in the lecture. She is informative. But tends to talk a lot, so class will be VERY BORING if not participating.
Amy requires you to read through perusall. The readings are hard to understand but as long as you get 5 high grades for your annotations that's all she will be grading. She also grades based off of your top 3 scores on your quizzes. About 14 quizzes in total. She talks the whole entire class and writes on the board. No final exam just a final paper
Very good and concise lectures. A lot of quizzes and a final essay based on in-class discussed topics. Overall easy and interesting
She is honestly an amazing teacher. She's nice and answers any questions you may have about anything she talks about. She does give quite a bit of quizzes but they are all very easy if you pay attention to her and write notes as well. Talks a lot and could get a little boring from time to time BUT it's necessary to pay attention!
Amy mostly talks all period and writes notes on the board, she gives random quizzes very often so its in your best interest to pay attention/take notes in class. Theres no final, just a paper, but she gives plenty of time to write. She assigns a ton of readings on perusall, all you have to do is comment. Shes sweet though, wouldnt mind taking again.
The professor is constantly rambling, making lectures difficult to understand. Quizzes every week based on her "lectures" and readings. She constantly targets students and assumes that everyone uses AI if they write a good paper. Half of the students in my class were sent to her office for "academic integrity" even though their essays were good.
I will never recommend her to anyone. This is 1000 course and she is making it seem like it's 3-4k course. Assumes that everyone is cheating. Please, never take her. Otherwise, you will hate yourself.
I would not recommend taking this class, be aware of having a pop quiz every class. She rambles all through class and doesn't keep the class involved/interested. Her lectures are all over the place so be prepared to teach yourself. She loses track constantly, avoid taking this professor if possible.
truly so passionate ab what she teaches. quiz at the end of almost every class but insanely easy, straightforward questions just pay attention n take notes during lecture. drops 2-3 lowest quiz grades. 1 final paper thats straightforward-15% of grade. light workload light class incredibly nice and caring teacher take for easy A
I don't recommend taking this class at all. If you're not interested in philosophy, avoid it. If you are going to take it, then I HIGHLY suggest taking it with a different professor. This professor believes everything you write is AI and questions your intelligence throughout the semester. She gives a lot of readings and quizzes for every class.
Professor Trautwein's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but engage with her teaching style and you'll do well. Lots of pop quizzes, so attendance is key. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for preparing for exams.
The answers of the quizzes given in class are explained during the lecture, but because the question may be hard to comprehend due to the limited time she gives it can be very easy to get it wrong. You'll need to put a lot of effort in this class, but you will get to read very interesting stuff!
she's vv passionate abt the course, if ur into philosophy she's great. 3 tests, final (no midterm), 1 paper, easy writing prompts every other class. hw is lots of reading/annotating(online). class discussions, every class is a lecture. take notes NO slides. understanding abt grades, if u show u care she helps. everything curved! some stuff dropped.
Professor Trautwein is very passionate about philosophy. There are a lot of readings before classes. 3 tests plus 1 final exam and a in-class. Additionally, the class was put into groups to talk about ideas for an essay we had to write in class. She is available during office hours and is helpful. But sometimes, she only views ideas her own way.
