way too many hand gestures!!! she expects a lot out of you for a gen ed course!
For a required GenEd class, a better teacher is required. She uses autobiographies as absolute truth to support her opinions, which are usually questionable. To do well in the class, you have to answer exactly what she wants. Take another class instead of this if you can.
Very hard grader. But her midterm and final were cool because it was take home. Long paper at end of class.
True, she is an EXTREMELY hard grader, but i enjoyed the class GREATLY. it was the only class i actually looked forward to going to. i would recommend her to someone who wants to learn about american cultures... to someone who just wants to take the easiest gen ed's possible, take a different class.
She is a very unfair grader, multiple problems throughout the semester with her grading on quizzes. She uses way to many hand gestures and she uses the word autonomy in every other sentence.
Wow this class is so boring! I sleep everyday. this is one of those classes where you can't miss any lecture or you are screwed because you have a quiz every thursday and two papers and two exams. But she does give a lot of extra credit, but then again her quizzes are rigged. She stinks!
I hated this class and the way she taught it. She does not prep you very well for tests or quizzes. I would not suggest taking this course and I would definitely not suggest taking ANY class with her teaching it.
This was a summer class and so it was shorter, but she makes class interesting and even uses videos. It wasn't difficult, but she does expect you to think about what you are reading. Way less reading than most history teachers give in a 300 level class. Expect to have to make comments in class because it is part of the grade, but no big deal.
Based on the previous ratings I do not think people realize that they are in college. College is meant to be a challenge, & challenging courses show just how intelligent people are. The class & teacher will definitely challenge you, so bring your "A" game if your up for it.
Dr. Wood is a great teacher I have had her twice one for slavery and the old south and am currently in His 309. She is very helpful and wants you to succeed. she grades hard but thats because she wants to challenge you. She is extremely interesting and very knowledgeable. I recommend taking her!
She is an excellent professor, but grades pretty tough. If you go into it knowing that you are going to be critiqued heavily on your papers, then you will be fine. She is real helpful and easy to get along with. She really cares about the subject matter and the students. I recommend her definitely.
Wood was a pretty horrific prof. she graded based on your effort, not the quality of your work. her grading on the tests is insanely hard, and for some questions she will take off points for not answering using information that she didnt' even ask for, and overall she was definitely my least favorite prof i've had in college
Professor Wood is a very challenging professor but I like her. She is a tough grader but I feel that I am learning a lot in that class, although it is a gen ed class.
Professor Wood is a good professor - knows a lot about American culture. Her lectures are basically just powerpoints, with extra information, the powerpoints are available on blackboard. She has weekly quizzes every thursday, and if you don't go to lecture/read the novels, you're pretty much screwed.
Best teacher I have ever had. I laugh at the comments on her, "expects you to come to class," "tests are hard." Of course, it is college, it isn't supposed to be easy.
Dr. Wood is a very good professor. She knows what she's talking about and is pretty clear on explanations. This is not an easy gen ed though so if you don't want to put in the effort don't take it. She grades hard on papers but you only really need to read the novels that you write your paper on, I spark noted the rest and got an A in the class.
Anyone that says she is an awesome teacher is an idiot. If your not a history major its impossible to get an A. she expects you to remember the entire book in her exams (which are all in depth essay questions)she grades your other papers even harder. if your a non history major or normal person don't take this worthless class.
Dr. Wood is the best professor I've had, and I'm not a history major. The person below clearly didn't want to do any work and probably shouldn't be in college. Dr. Wood is a great speaker and she engages the class really well. I learned a ton.
Good class. Dr. Wood is great. She really helped me when I went to see her. She knows her stuff.
Professor Wood knows her stuff, but expects way too much out of her students for a 100 level class. I agree if you are not interested in History it is not worth taking. Her lectures are informational for exams but very boring. I have a 3.2 GPA but got a C putting in good effort. I dont see how its possible to get an A dont take this class.
Professor Wood expects way too much out of the students for a 100 level class. She talks way too fast and cannot write down all the notes. She is one of the worst professors I have had. She thinks everyone is a history major when they are not. Her exams are impossible. I would not suggest taking this class unless you are a history major.
There are two papers each worth alot of points, a midterm and a final each worth alot of points, and I think 13 weekly online exams. As long as you go to every single class and take very good notes the class isn't too bad.
Prof. Wood is a really great professor. Her standards are high, but you learn! (something these other commenters clearly didn't want to do) She cares and she'll help you. I'll definitely take another class with her.
Amy Wood was by far the worst teacher I ever had in college. She treats everyone like they are a history and its a 100 level class. She grades really hard and marks off points for the stupidest things. She talks way to fast to take any real notes. Do whatever it takes to avoid taking this teacher, I wish I did.
Although her course was tough for a 100 level, it taught me way more than just history. Dr. Wood's style of teaching taught me how to take good & effective notes. Her essay-based tests and other papers helped improve my writing skills and prepare me for my major classes. If you put forth the effort, you WILL receive an A.
Dr. Wood is an amazing professor. It is not an easy class, but its not supposed to be. Her lectures are clear and very helpful. She is a tough grader but you can get easy points by taking the weekly quizzes and attending movie nights. She is also very helpful and willing to work with you. If you put in the time and effort you can get an A.
Very hard grader but she is a very sweet person. I suggest not taking this class unless you are truly interested in history and are up for a challenge. There are weekly online assessments, two movie screenings, two 3-5 page papers and a midterm and a test. She doesn't take attendance but if you want to do well i suggest going to class.
Very tough course. Most of the time on homework I would copy exactly what she said in lecture and still get a half a point taken off. I think it's impossible to get full credit in her class. She is also extremely liberal, so if you are somewhat conservative then you'll probably sit in the back and shake your head at some of the things she says.
You learn a lot in this class - it made me like History for the first time. She's a great lecturer and does lots of discussion. I don't know what the person below meant -- I'm a Republican, but found her really even-handed. She's just explaining different points of view from the past. Lots of extra credit points available for those who try.
Amy Wood expects a lot from students, but she keeps the lectures pretty interesting. Its an easy B if you just do the work, but I suggest going in for her office ours and the TA's if you can when writing the paper, that's where I lost the majority of points. She's tough but overall I enjoyed the class
I moderately enjoy history but this was one of the best classes I have taken. The information is pretty neat and she explains it so well. If you do the reading and go to class, the tests are a breeze. She is a tough grader, though, and almost everything is essay (tests, 2 papers, and half the quiz points weekly). I hate writing and got through.
I saw some negative reviews on her before taking the class but out of all my professors, Dr. Wood is the one I know best. She sincerely cares about me in her class and is very helpful whenever I need it. I can sometimes get distracted during her lectures but still do very well on the quizzes and essays. She is a harsh grader but not too bad.
If i had a beer every time she said "kind of" or "sort of" during her unintelligent lectures, I would have alcohol poisoning. She doesn't explain what she wants out of her students at all and is a sad lame excuse for a "teacher" not sure how she got the job even. She sucks, don't take this class she picks class favorites as if it's high school.
She jumps around from time periods and no one has any idea what is going on in her lectures. She is the toughest grader and does not tell you what she wants even if you explain exactly what she said. I am a History minor and officially hate history because of her. She legit it the worst teacher I have ever had. DONT TAKE HER EVER!!!!!
I'm taking 200 and 300 level classes in other departments that are less challenging. Her expectations on the papers and weekly online quizzes are absolutely ridiculous, and her set of classroom rules takes me back to high school (no phones, laptops, etc. in a large lecture hall). Tests are short answeressay. You WILL NOT get 100% on anything
Professor Wood grades this class like a 300 level course and it's ridiculous. The weekly quizzes wouldn't be bad but she expects loads of detail in a 30minute time period. I don't think anyone in my class got over a 95 on any exam or paper.
Class is held in a large lecture hall, but she enforces her no laptopcellphone policy strictly. You won't get 100% on the tests or quizzes even if you give thorough answers. Lectures are very boring and she does little to keep the class engaged. Must go to class to have any hope of passing. I wouldn't take a course with her again if you paid me.
She hates giving out good grades and even if you have detailed answers, she will not give you an A. I have to retake this course because of her. The only C I have had in college is because of this lady treating this class like a 300 level course when a majority are not history majors.
DO NOT TAKE IF NON HISTORY MAJOR! She is an extremely tough grader and expects a lot from her students but she is a fabulous teacher. I am a history major and her lectures were very interesting to me. Weekly online open-note quizzes, two papers, mid term and final exam. If you skip class you will 100% not pass. Excellent teacher for his majors
Fantastic teacher. Passionate and knowledgeable about what she teaches. Her classes are definitely challenging, but you will gain so much out of them. Very friendly and goes out of her way to help her students. For the history buffs (or Good Will Hunting fans, I suppose), she is the daughter of Gordon Wood, History Professor at Brown University
I'm not even a history major but I absolutely loved coming to her HIS 136 class. Her lectures were long, but very interesting. You MUST attend class because her tests are all based on what she goes over in class and that material only. Papers were difficult but she is more than willing to help if you ask. Overall loved this class.
I had a lovehate relationship with this class. I loved how much I learned about American history and felt like I got a lot out of it. I hated how difficult of a grader she was for a 100 level class. She treats this class as the Super Bowl and takes it very seriously. I felt as if I was in a 300 level course. There are quizzes every week, not fun.
Amy is very knowledgable but she should not be teaching a 100 level course. Way too difficult of a grader, especially for non-history majors. Students who say she gives a lot of help must of been favorites because I got little help and would constantly ask.
Dr. Wood is possibly the best professor I have had at ISU. She has taught me so much about history. She has also taught me so much about my writing. She really cares for her students and she wants you to succeed. Put in the work, show you're trying, and talk to her during office hours. If you really want to do well in her class, you will.
She has lots of credit/no-credit and in-class writing assignments and if you miss them, you are basically screwed. You can only miss two in-class assignments and one credit/no-credit assignment, she's a very tough grader on her papers and you need to be willing to read and work for it. The quizzes are not too bad, but you need to write well.
I have taken three classes by her and loved them all. they were supper interesting and helpful. She has a lot of reading and work which is to be expected because its COLLEGE! she has helped me to be a better writer and thinker. If you want an easy class go with something else.
Way too hard of a grader. As hard as you try on quizzes or homework, she always finds a way to take points off. Do not take this class unless you have to. I regret it. Lectures are long, quizzes every week, and tests are short answers. Good luck.
Professor wood seems like a wonderful person and she really knows her history, but I would not take this class again. It was taught as though we were all history majors but I am not. Midterm and final are really tough and the weekly quizzes are graded very harshly. Going to class will really help your grade.
She was knowledgeable with History and proves to know what she is talking about. However, she treats a 100level class like everyone is a History major and clearly shows favoritism to others. I attempted to get help on multiple occasions but I was either put off or blamed for it being my fault with no help or explanation.
Her lectures are 2 hours of her talking, and you cannot use your laptop to take notes. She talks fast so be ready to write fast. Her quizzes are full of short answers and she grades them incredibly hard. She is the most knowledgeable person about history, but treats the class like we know just as much as her.
I WOULD NOT SUGGEST HER UNLESS YOU ARE A HISTORY MAJOR. Wood talks so fast during lectures it's impossible to write everything down. There are quizzes online out of class EVERY week; 2 papers, a midterm and the final but she is THE HARSHEST GRADER EVER. This is a gen ed level 100 course and it is taught like a 300 course. An A is impossible.
Professor Wood's is very knowledgeable in what she teaches& is very nice but, she is the hardest grading professor I have ever come across during my time here at ISU. It is almost impossible to receive an A in her class,no matter how hard you work. This is not a professor you slack off around because, if you do, you have a good chance of doing poor
Dr. Wood expects students in this class to be passionate about history. Her lectures are just her talking for the whole time. Online quizzes every week are graded VERY harshly, and she expects expert level work on the 2 papers. Must attend every class or you won't know what's going on for the quizzes. Do not take unless willing to work very hard
Do the readings. Do the readings. DO THE READINGS. Take notes during lectures, cause there are plenty of ReggieNet quizzes. I learned a lot from Professor Wood. She does not test you on the textbook, so make sure you focus on readings and lectures for the two exams. Papers and quizzes are your grade; pay attention and take notes and youll be fine!
Dr. Wood was so passionate about what she was teaching, which made the course subject interesting to engage in, but her expectations were far to high for this being a general education history class. I do have to thank her though because she rounded me in the end to the higher grade. Just be ready for a lot of reading and a lot of hard work!
Grades in this class consist of quizzes, papers, and only two exams. No lecture material is available outside of class.
Weekly quizzes, two papers and two exams. Go to class, her lectures are horrible and boring but necessary to pass. Grades everything super harsh as if the class was a 300 level. First day she said "I make it hard bc that's how I learned best". Choose any other professor. Impossible to get an A in the class.
Taking this as a general education course was a mistake. She grades this course like it is a 300 level class and does not give good feedback in order for you to try and improve. This will be my first D ive ever gotten in my life. Not for lack of trying, I took the quizzes, showed up for test review, got extra credit, ect. Impossible to get an A
Grades everything way to hard for 100 course. Avoid.
I absolutely loved Dr. Wood. The class is hard and she makes you work for it for sure, but her lectures are very interesting if you really pay attention. Read the book and take lots of notes. She is always available outside of class and actually wants her students to succeed. Would definitely take her again.
class was easy but she graded so hard it was very unnecessary. Ive never got a D in my life and this class destroyed me DO NOT TAKE IT
HORRIBLE. Do not take this class with her as your professor. I hated every minute of it.
Dr. Wood will make you work for your grade however she is the best teacher of content I've ever had. She makes you work hard so you understand the content, and she will make you a better writer by the end of her course whether you like it or not.
She gives detailed timed quizzes every week and you better have a photographic memory because she will quiz you on all of the content no matter how small. She speaks way too fast and makes it your fault if you don't understand. HIS 136 is interesting but GET A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!! Save yourself the stress because she is too much.
If you do not have a photographic memory you will be failing this class. She quizzes on the tiniest things and is never lenient. Class is not mandatory BUT if you don't go you wont know anything. She is the worst teacher ever I WOULD NOT recommend taking her class I have honestly thought about dropping it.
Amy was very approachable, and she always gave very specific feedback and would let you know what to add or fix before things were due, but she could be a tough grader at times. Her lectures were very interesting and she always valued class participation even over zoom. If you read the textbook and go to class you should be fine
HARDEST CLASS I HAVE TAKEN AT ISU. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!! Her grading is incredibly harsh. I have never struggled in any classes but this one was horrible.
This was by far one of the hardest classes ive ever taken. She grades so insanely hard for no reason, even when you feel like you understand the material. I definitely do not recommend taking class from her!!
Super nice lady but super hard grader. Not lenient whatsoever- feels like she is looking for very specific things. Says she doesn't require you to know important dates but quizzes you on the smallest of details. Go to class and try to take notes as best you can, she talks fast. No tests but 2 major papers and weekly quizzes.
Professor Wood really knows the content and delivers it with great enthusiasm. If you take notes and prepare for a weekly quiz you will do just fine in this class. I appreciate that she shot it down the middle like a historian should, no bias. She leaves the class to form their own opinions with the information she provides. Great professor!
I learned so much in this class. Dr.Wood is incredible and hands down one of my favorite professors I've had. She isn't difficult you just need to take good notes in class to do well on the quizzes. She is encouraging and kind, most of the bad reviews are kids who didn't go or thought they would pass without trying. don't be scared of the reviews
Hardest grader my roommate and I have ever encountered. Will probably never get a 100 on a single assignment, will nitpick everything in your essays/written responses. Quizzes are timed every week and will probably stress you out. Doesn't post notes so make sure to attend class. Also doesn't post your grade so you'll never know what you have.
She is a very tough grader, hard to get 100s on anything. her PowerPoints only have pictures on it so if you learn better by visually seeing notes/content do not take her. There's no final but 12 timed quizzes and two papers which are super annoying. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go you will fail the quizzes and basically fail.
Pretty nice but weirdly strict on phones and going to the bathroom, kinda annoying. Pretty tough grader, looks for specific things on every written assignment. Try to write down as much as you can during lecture because that's what's on the quizzes. Overall easy class if you listen and take good notes.
She's very rude and inconsiderate. One day in class she yelled at a female student for getting up and going to the bathroom during class and "interrupting her". The only interruption was her stopping class to tell the girl to come talk to her after class since she felt the need to interrupt her lecture. Would highly suggest avoiding her class.
Prof Wood is nice but VERY weirdly strict on bathrooms + electronics? Shes very big on timed assessments (timed quizzes and in class writings) which is stressful and makes things harder considering she grades pretty harshly. Attendance isn't mandatory but she doesn't post anything but pictures on the slides so if u want to pass u need to go.
Prof Wood Is an AMAZING lecturer. Her lectures left me thinking about them for the rest of the week. She expects you to be very engaged in class but its not hard to accomplish that. She really wants you to be show your comprehension and application skills and that will get you the A! No phones or getting up in class very strict about disruption!
Takes points off for going to the bathroom and tweaks out if you do not apologize for going. It's a gen ed class nobody needs and she acts like she is teaching something you can not learn on YouTube in about 2 hours because she wants to feel like an actual accomplished adult. Acts like that one teacher in high school who hates you to everybody.
Writing this bc I saw her writing a good review on here to herself behind her desk when I went up to talk to her. I am a junior who took this class to fill in worthless credit and she is the worst prof I have seen so far teaching and acting towards students. She gets mad n makes a scene in front of class if one goes to the bathroom in class of 100.
I'm currently in the class and all I have to say is that its AWFUL. Lectures are just her talking, no slides to show key terms or events, doesn't allow the use of laptops unless you sit in the back, and way too much writing. I DO NOT NEED THIS MUCH STRESS IN MY LIFE RN. You better pay CLOSE ATTENTION because she never post any heads up on canvas.
DO NOT TAKE! She finds bs reasons to give you a lower grade even if you answer every single question right. I do not think she realizes she is teaching a gen ed people only take to fill in credits. I feel bad for her husband and kids if she even has any acting the way she does.
Amy is a very nice person! You call tell she loves what she's teaching, but unfortunately, she grades way too hard! Even if you think you answered a question thoroughly, she'll take off points for little things. But like I said she is very nice. There is one huge extra credit project that will help you a bunch. Be ready to critically think!
This class was ridiculously hard for a gen-ed. She graded harshly and almost never gave 100%s. There was so much writing involved, and it got very overwhelming. While attendance isn't mandatory, it is crucial in order to get all of the info because she doesn't post the slides. There are only online unit quizzes and no tests/finals, which was nice.
she polices students about using restrooms. in other classes since we are adults we can use the restrooms freely. but as a student got up to do so because it was an emergency she stopped her own lecture and interrogated the student on why she had to use the restroom.
