She's from Costa Rica so she has a small accent, but it's easy to understand. She writes everything on the white board as well as running a powerpoint. As long as you write everything she writes down, and study it before the test, it's an easy A. She has group work about every other week, but it's just small worksheets you could basically do alone.
Dr. A's teaching style is pretty clear cut. The only thing she tests on is what she has talked about in class. Take notes and go to the SI exam reviews and you should be fine!
Dr. A is nice enough, but she is not clear on her material. She goes over the material on the test after you've taken it. Quiz every week, 4 exams in the semester, and 'tutorials' (extremely long and boring "study tools" which are mandatory) every week. Very hard class, would not recommend.
She is very clear over the material. She takes notes in front of you. She really tries to teach you the material.
I felt like the class was too structured. I felt like the atmosphere of the classroom was, "I am the teacher and you are to be here in my class for 75 minutes. We are going to learn as much material in those 75 minutes as we can." Though A is definitely do-able, it's HARD. I found the material interesting, but still hard for me.
I hated her as a teacher. Her voice was very annoying and her exams were extremely hard.
Very passive aggressive person, makes you feel dumb when asking a question. Not specific on her notes; not a very good professor.
Dr. A is very explicit in what she expects. This class is for non majors and as a result I found it difficult. IT skims over many important topics in Biology and so can leave you with alot of unanswered questions when we moved onto a new topic. However Dr. A is very available for office hours and after class for further discussion.
She is very dry in lectures and has a hard time getting here thoughts out clearly. The language barrier is very evident and makes lecture periods twice as hard as they have to be. Her SI/TA instructional times were very inconvenient, which makes the class impossible.
Dr. A was a great teacher. If you attend class, go to SI sessions and talk to her at her office hours she will see that you are trying indefinitely and she will do everything to help you. She is very nice, sweet and understanding. Just talk to her.
She is a very respected woman, and I don't think she gets enough credit. Yes, she is from Costa Rica. Yes, there is some language barrier, but she was one of the best Biology teachers I have ever had. Her lectures are based off the book, but she gives examples relative to every day life, to help clarify the information. Like I said, she's great!
She has an accent so sometimes she has to take longer to explain concepts, but has a metaphor for everything. She writes everything on the board that you should write in your notes. The class isn't hard if you do the extra credit and do ok on exams
I am a freshman student athlete and SI sessions are pretty impossible for me but I getting an A isn't. I'm specifically choosing her for my next semester because she is amazing! She cares a lot about her students and after getting a C on my first exam I talked to her about my exam and took her studying advice I got an A on my last exam.
Dr. A is very straight forward but never revisits a topic after she's talked about it. If you ask her questions she does make you feel dumb and most times wont explain why you're wrong. The homework (due weekly on fri) rarely correlates with what will be on the tests and most things we never went over in class. Quizlet was my hero during this class
Bio on its own is really hard. Her lectures in class are okay. I like the fact that she takes the notes with us in class. The only things i dislike about her class was that we have homework due every friday which have nothing to do with what we are learning in class so that can be tedious. Quizzes are given every meeting and the tests are difficult
Dr. A is great! She can seem a bit tough, but is totally willing to help you in office hours and holds study sessions once a week. The class is pretty difficult and you have to work extremely hard to get the grade you want, but it is doable! She writes down everything on the projector that you need to know, so make sure to study your notes!
Cares about how successful her students are. Some group work, quizzes ever class, tutorials due weekly and quite a bit of lecture notes. Not much extra credit but as long as you do well on all the little assignment and attend SI sessions if possible, it's not difficult to pass.
Dr. A is very strict. She is a tough grader but if you go to SI's and study, you'll be okay. Take advantage of every study opportunity she offers. She is nice and holds study sessions that are very helpful and if you go to her office hours she might quiz you which is also extremely helpful. She is tough, but I'm really glad I took bio 181 with her.
She is a really great teacher, but you have to put in the work to get a good grade. I have taken the equivalent of BIO 181 in high school but the credit didn't transfer so it was fairly easy for me. Just be ready to work.
SI's, study sessions, and office hours are your friends in this class! Tests can be tricky, but you just have to put in a little extra effort to get the grade you want.
Dr. A is really a good teacher and the online homework is easy! Majority of your grade is based on tests and she will drop the lowest one! She kind of talks in a monotone voice that can put you to sleep or gets off topic during lectures. Besides that, study and you will get a good grade! Never went to II/Office hours but still got a good grade!
Absolutely terrible. Monotone voice that puts you straight to sleep, there is a quiz every class meeting, barely any extra credit, and she is not friendly. She is not approachable. A kid in my class for an A on a test and she told our whole class she didn't think he actually worked for it and that it was a fluke. It was very rude.
Dr. A is not an easy teacher. She is a tough grader and will make you work for an A. She tries to be scary and mean but is honestly really caring if you are actually working hard in her class. 181 is a very dense course and she will make you learn it very in depth. Everyone mentions her accent but I never noticed it once. Her english is perfect
I didn't like Dr.A when I took 181 with her. I thought she was very condescending. However, this completely changed when I took her for BIO 182. Her teaching style is very traditional which I liked, she treats you like an adult, and she makes you put in the effort to get a good grade. I would definitely recommend taking her!
Dr. A is a tough professor. Her notes are easy enough to take because she takes them with you but her tests are insanely hard.
She is nice but there are a lot of requirements
I took BIO 181 my first year with W Johnson and it was awful. He isn't an awful person, he was just bad at teaching. I ended up failing his class and had to take BIO 181 next semester with Dr. A. Best decision I've ever made. She's a wonderful teacher who wants you to pass her class. I love how she writes notes with the class! My favorite professor
Dr. A is awesome! This course demands that you put in work and apply yourself. As this class is not an easy A it is still very possible. Tests can be hard but manageable. Weekly homework is very easy as well. I would highly recommend taking this difficult course with Dr. A cause she makes it bearable!
She's a great lecturer and gives great notes that really help for tests. However, she doesn't do extra credit or anything in the area. She is strict but believes you can pass the class but you really have to work for it. Slacking doesn't work in this class.
Dr. A expects massive amount of effort in her course. I felt as if I could never follow her lectures or understand what she was teaching. Her tests require an advanced understanding of all material and are very twisted and tricky. I also felt she wasn't a very accessible resource in her own course. Study sessions are essential if you want to pass.
Her exam questions came directly out of her notes; none of her questions came from material outside of the notes (including required textbook readings, which you don't really have to do because she goes over it in class). She doesn't put her ppt lectures online so you have to show up to class to get her notes. Exam questions were worded confusingly
Dr. A is an amazing professor! She will seem scary at first, but trust me she cares about each and every student. She wants you to succeed, but she also wants you to understand that good things do not come easy. You have to work for what you want. She writes notes with you, which is very helpful. Also, going to SI's will help a lot.
Hard first college-level science class and she doesn't try and go easy on you. She does, however, drop your lowest exam which helped me a lot considering I got a 66% on the first one and A's on all the rest. Go to SI sessions and really making studying for this class a priority.
The first day of class might be intimidating but I am glad I experienced her my first year. She is super understanding as she allows you to drop one exam, one quiz, one homework assignment, etc. All of the exams are ONLY from the content that is presented during the lecture notes, there are no surprises. I am absolutely taking again.
Dr. A is a great teacher but you must work for your grade. She makes it explicit from the beginning that she isnt going to hold your hand! She is very helpful if you go to her office hours and it is very important you pay attention to lectures. Study the lectures - not the book for the test. Class requires lots of attention but you learn a lot!
She is such an amazing woman. She truly cares about her students success. Do visit her in office hours when you can. There is no extra credit. Tests are difficult, you must put in the work. Attend SI sessions!
Prof. Anchetta is a phenomenal instructor. She goes through the content without you and does not rely by reading off the material. Rather, she will hand-write the notes with students and always takes the time to make sure students understand the content.
I loved Dr. A! Her class was very hard but she was explicit about what was expected. She was very open to any questions & had a lot of office house. The class was heavily lecture based and tests were hard. Always pay attention and ask questions! The grade in the grade book doesn't reflect your actual grade, so be careful!
I have taken Dr. A for Bio 181 and 182. She was a really good choice. She takes the notes with you on her iPad. The way she explains concepts is very helpful. Most of the work is done through the online textbook and there are a few worksheet assignments.
Super sweet and easy to understand
I loved Dr. A! I took BIO 181 and 182 with her and i would definetly say she is more invested in 181 but she still is awesome and is super helpful. She's tough but a good tough. And she writes down everything that you need to know which is so great
Dr. A is a relatively kind and friendly lady, however the way she ran her Bio 182 course was terrible. She would write notes with you in lecture, but expect you to write everything that she says, even if she stops taking notes herself. A huge chunk of your grade comes from her 3 exams, which are NOTHING like the notes she goes over in lecture.
Dr. A is very careful in explaining the basics in biology. Follow and STUDY only HER NOTES (ebook stuff are EXTRA. That's just some cushion for learnsmart), and the MCQs in the exam are gonna be the easiest ever. Get your iClickers, since she does questions through that (in every class). She is one of the nicest professors I've ever met at NAU.
This class was extremely difficult. I showed up to every single class and I got a C in the class. I would take lecture notes and attend SI sessions and still do poorly on the test. The exams basically had nothing from the lecture notes on the tests. I do not recommend this professor if you want to get a good grade in BIO 181.
Dr. A is a really pleasant professor. She's funny, caring, and dedicated. She does have a thick accent but you get used to it, English wasn't her first language and its apparent at times but she takes good in class notes. Her tests can be hard but as long as you go to class and pay attention to the assigned reading you'll do fine.
This class was okay. Dr. A is very funny and tries her best to keep her lectures lively. There was a heavy amount of homework with this course, and if you miss even one assignment it can hurt your grade badly. Seek help as soon as you feel yourself falling behind because if you don't understand one thing then the rest of the class will be terrible
Its simple, show up and she will not test you on anything she does not state in class. It may be difficult transitioning into this college environment but you will be so grateful for a professor like her later on. I do highly suggest SIs because she moves fast, she has to. If you put in the effort to study and attend an SI, youll get an A
Despite the heavy workload, Dr. A is a great professor. She breaks down all of the material and office hours will help! The many homework assignments are not worth a lot, but the points do add up so stay on top of it. She drops all of your lowest scores, including your lowest exam, and she has the highest test average of any other professor.
Professor A sometimes gets a bad reputation, but she really is an awesome professor. If you do not do your homework.. then DO NOT take this class. Lots of homework and weekly assignments, but they are not super difficult. GO TO SI SESSIONS. The tests are easy if you are prepared and study for them. She tells you exactly what to study for the exams.
This class has tons of homework (half of your grade is homework)! Keeping up on homework is key to passing this class. She does not post notes online so attendance is important. The tests can be hard if you don't study. Attend SI's! There are quizzes almost every week and tests are every 2-2.5 weeks, she drops your lowest scores for both.
I love Dr. A so much. She is the sweetest human being on this planet. She gives a lot of homework, and she gives 5 exams. I had no background of biology and I still got an A in this class. She'll always help you get an A, and go to SI's!! She really loves her students, and she is amazing. Keep Dr. A as your professor!
this professor cares about her students, but it is very lecture heavy and she does not get to the point with things. it is three days a week and class goes by fast but this class was meant for freshman being introduced to college with a wave of homework . i would have up to 8 assignments due in two days.
She is tiny, but mighty. She is so sweet, but very intimidating. Her class is centered around lecture and online textbook work. This course is very difficult and you will not pass is you do not put effort into it. This course definitely taught me how to study and the BIO 181 course is not a joke. Good luck in BIO 181!
I really enjoyed Dr. A's class. She truly cares about each of her students and thoroughly prepared us for each exam. The way she taught bio 181 is like no other professor and I really loved how she hand wrote the notes in each class. She definitely makes you earn and work for your grade, but all of the hard work really pays off!!!
She is a fantastic professor. Her lectures are packed full of information. She has fill in the blank notes for you to print. A lot of homework, usually an assignment due every day. Tests are extremely difficult if you do not study properly, but moderately difficult if you study well. Learning outcomes help a lot, but are not in depth like the tests
Dr. A is great as long as you do the work. Has small assignments do pretty much every night but is basically participation points. She gives you the exact notes in class and as long as you go to an SI before the tests you will do fine. Lots of extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester.
I really enjoyed Bio 181 with Dr. A. I was really nervous going into the class but as long as you keep up with homework, study, and go to class youll be fine. Definitely learned a lot from the course including some great study skills.
You have to attend class otherwise you won't pass. The exams and in-class quizzes are based on the lectures which take the entire class with the notes. You will have a lot of homework, sometimes 6 assignments in one night. She does try to make the class interesting by telling some jokes but will tell you to leave if you are talking. GO TO SI
Dr. A is an amazing professor. She is much better than the other professors I have heard about. She gives out great material to help you succeed. There is a lot of homework but it makes the exams much easier. Great professor.
She uses BIO 181 as a way to "weave out students". She says that "if you can't pass my tests then there is no way you can pass the tests to get into nursing school, grad school etc." (the class average for her first exam was a D).
Dr. A is amazing!! I was nervous in the beginning but her note style is extremely helpful for visual learners! There are a lot of online assignments but they really help you to understand the material. If you study hard for tests and do the homework you will be fine! Go to office hours! She's super nice and is really good about helping one on one!
She wrote out her notes in class, so if you miss a day, you miss a whole day worth of notes that unless you know someone in the class, you won't get from her. Furthermore, her final is set up so that 70% of the final test is on the hardest subject from the course, so her study guide for the final wasn't very accurate to study from.
Dr. Anchetta was not a very caring person. She made the lectures unnecessarily confusing and would always scold us for being bad students for not knowing the answers to the questions she asked. The material she covered in class was usually never on the exam, she would random stuff on the exams and expect us to still pass. I highly do not recommend.
A lot of her notes come directly out of the book so I would recommend to do the readings and hw since they also account for points. She has good lectures and puts together note packets for you to print and use (i use my comp. to download and write notes using Xodo). If you study you'll be fine on the tests.
Dr. Anchetta is a very nice, caring professor. She hand writes her notes as she lectures and pauses to make sure the class understands. She makes learning outcomes with chapters and the exams are based off of them. Although biology is not my favorite lecture, her method of lecturing was entertaining, and she often told stories of her studies.
Funny during lectures and really wants to see you succeed.
I absolutely love Dr.A. Yes, her class is a lot of work, but it's not hard work. You literally do a reading assignment and a post-lecture homework assignment every week. She also will only test you on things she talked about in class. Use the learning outcomes that you took notes on as a study guide and go to SI! Would take any class she teaches!!!
Greatest professor ever! Very funny and cares if you pass the class too. It's easy if you love and understand biology like I do, but the SI leaders are also great helps too and send out study guides for the tests. 10/10 loved this class so much!
You will learn how to study in this class. She is very friendly and greets every student on the first day. Clickers are necessary. There's a few extra credit options. Dr. A will always answer your questions, even during the middle of a lecture. 10/10 would recommend.
I started off this course on the wrong foot but once I attended her office hours after exams, her class got easier. Even if you do not struggle in this class, go to her office hours! There are frequent exams but if you study over the entire course it is an easy A.
I love her teaching style, especially that she takes notes with you on the board. It's BIO181, it's going to be a challenge if you don't put the work in, but Ana wants you to succeed.
If you are going to take BIO 181, you should take Dr.A. This course is going to be difficult no matter what, but she offers extra credit opportunities and does her best to help her students succeed. Out of all of the BIO 181 professors I have heard about, she is the best.
Dr. A is very good at explaining everything and is respectful if you have questions. Great notes and lectures and if you come to class and pay attention it is fairly easy to get a good grade.
Dr. A is an amazing professor! I was told the class was challenging going into it, but if you pay attention, come to class, and figure out the homework assignment on your own, you will be totally fine. Her tests are challenging, but not impossible. Her style of note taking is extremely helpful and is the main reason the material stuck with me.
This class was really difficult for me, but not because Dr. A is a bad teacher. She is a very nice woman, but I found it difficult to learn this topic in such a large class. If I was to do this class again, I would study more and really take advantage of SI sessions. It isn't impossible to do well, but you really have to work for your grade.
Dr. A is a very knowledgeable professor. Her lectures are always very content heavy, and her printouts for notes can be helpful if youve never really taken biology before. Seriously though, you might think its fine to skip a few homework assignments here and there, theyre only 5 points, but trust me when I say theyll add up.
Dr. A is a very good professor. The class is difficult, and the homework is somewhat heavy but not too overwhelming. I highly recommend doing all homework assignments (usually worth 5 points) as it definitely adds up in the end. SI sessions are also very useful as well as office hours! I definitely recommend Dr. A for Bio 181.
BIO 181 is a class that is homework heavy, regardless of who you get as a professor. Dr. A makes her lectures easy to follow and makes things easier to remember.
Clickers are a big part of lectures as well as group work. She gives a lot of guided notes and homework to help understand material. Ana is a nice person that will give you some assistance but you have to work for the grade
I only heard good things about Mrs. A from my friends that had her for 181 and 182 but having her for BIO 240 was not great. She is not good at explaining things, her "help" doesn't actually help you. When you ask her questions she tends to confuse student's more. Her online pre-lectures don't teach you, it almost seems as if she is tutoring you.
This was I believe her first year teaching Bio240 but it was awful, she didn't do actual lectures meaning all of them were online and very vague. She answered questions very vaguely and had a belittling demeanor towards other peers so I never wanted to ask questions except to the TAs.
Dr. A is kind and willing to help, but it seems that she just doesn't know how to help. She can be condescending when answering questions. She sometimes misspeaks or will start a sentence and not finish it, which makes it very hard to learn. All lectures were online videos, most of the assignments were easy. You don't really need the book.
I had heard amazing things about Dr. A from other previous students. However, I felt that her online lectures and in class worksheets did little to help me actually learn the content. I was very often confused and when I would ask her for help she really didn't do much other than be condescending and make me feel like an idiot. AWFUL!
Dr. A is my favorite professor at NAU! Shes incredibly smart & cares so much for her students. Her class is difficult if youre not paying attention. Make sure you read the book, she pulls all her test questions from the book, not from the lectures. Would highly recommend taking her class.
She sucks dont even bother
She is a good teacher, she might confuse you when asking a question. However, watch the lecture videos and learn the definitions and you'll be fine in the test (70-100% score most of the time).
Dr. Ancheta is lecture heavy, but not the kind of lecture that you'll fall asleep to. She switches lectures to asking questions, continue so that you're not left in the dark! Instead of mid-term grades, theres bi-weekly quizzes which are a bit hard... DO GOOD ON THEM. You won't have to take the final if your average for bi-weekly quizzes is 90%+!
I love this teacher. She is really inspiring for me and makes me enjoy Biology even more. Biology classes do have a lot of work in general, so dont think you can get by skipping assignments, but with a teacher like Ana, everything was amazing to learn about.
Hard class for a first year.
I was not a fan of how Professor A taught. She overcomplicates the simplest things and it made me more confused than I already was. Though I didn't click with how she taught, my grade reflected my efforts well.
Buy the book ASAP!! Dont wait, price will 2x. Organized well, each week you have 5-6 homework assignments. Every other week is a quiz, do well on them!!! If you average an 90% on quizzes you are excused from the final. Lectures arent very useful. Reading assignments take forever. Not a bad class, just lots of work. Recommend her over the other
Dr. A is one of my favorite professors at NAU. She gives extra credit but there is a lot of homework. Overall she's the best BIO181 professor. Go to class and pay attention and you will pass.
Dr. A was a great professor in my experience taking BIO181. Because of COVID, a lot of things were different this year & Dr. A did an incredible job at adapting to online teaching! This class is definitely difficult and will challenge you, but as long as you get a routine and pay attention during lectures youll do great, especially with Dr. A!
Shes a very thoughtful professor who tried her hardest to relate to her students to make the course easier for them. It was an easy A and I had a great time in her lessons. Would definitely have her again!
Dr. A is very sweet and tries her best to make the online course as easy and clear to navigate as possible. There is a lot of work, but if you get a routine down it really isn't that hard to manage. She is very understanding and will work with you to ensure you have the best chance possible to succeed in her class. I would recommend her!
This teacher does not specify when half of the homework is due. In my case I was never even informed about where the final is and it was not on here calendar either. Dr. Anchetta also never responds to emails. It took me three weeks to get ahold of her after getting through numerous people higher up she finally responded in a lack luster way.
Terrible teacher, isn't clear about whats due or the expectations for the class.
Mrs. Anchetta does not post all the work that is due on her calendar only some of it. So if you end up taking this class look forward to missing assignments that you didn't know were due.
Lots of busy work! Most things are automatically graded with multiple attempts so don't worry too much about reading and memorizing everything. Bi-weekly quizzes can be tough, Quizlet will be your best friend.
She is very sweet, makes semi-funny analogies and her class is not unbearable. First week may be extremely overwhelming, it gets easier. A lot of work every week, not hard just a lot. Do the work and pay attention to the lecture videos and class, GO TO SI for the biweekly quizzes!!!! you'll do fine. It's a good class :)
There is a lot of work but if you spend a minimal amount of time looking at BBLearn you will figure it out and know when things are due. Learning outcomes are really clear and quizzes are really predictable if you study from them. Its 181 so its not the easiest class you'll take but its super doable. All the assignments are free points which helps
Dr. A is amazing and you should take her class if given the chance. If you do the readings and pay slight attention in class you will pass. She drops the lowest test from your score, lets you skip the final if you average 90% on tests (easier said then done sometimes) and offers extra credit. Dr. A is super sweet as well.
I have always been pretty ok with bio classes, but her class made me feel like an idiot. The lectures are confusing if you don't take careful notes of everything that she is saying. Your overall grade is based on the bi-weekly quizzes which were somewhat difficult. If you do take her class I would recommend going to SI and tutoring .
This class was my final Bio class and I regret it. If you aren't planning to read 50 pages per week and fully memorize every single word that is written, I do not advise taking this class. The structure of the class does not make sense in the assignments given. My emails were not responded too and overall was very disappointed in the class.
Dr A truly cares about her students' success. She starts out most of her classes with a mini motivational pep talk. There is a LOT of homework in this course, but most of it is just copying the notes she gives you. If you do the homework, you'll be fine. The stories she tells about her daughter are great too.
I absolutely adored Dr. A during my time in her class. It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot and she cares so much about her students. She seems a bit intimidating at first, but shes so nice and really funny. I had her pre-covid, so there was quite a bit of group work back then. Lecture heavy, notes are fill in the blank.
She's a very sweet professor and you can tell she cares about her students. There is A LOT of material but as long as you stay on top of it, you should be fine. She gives quizzes every other week but there are plenty of resources to help you prepare. Take good notes and ask questions and you'll be successful.
Dr. A was very nice, but went on tangents and seemed confused when she was teaching lectures. She didn't really answer questions fully. All of her concept map quizzes and quizzes have unlimited tries and are fairly easy. Her biweekly quizzes are more difficult, but if you study you'll be fine. I recommend going to SI sessions and going to lecture.
Dr A. is AWESOME! It is super important to go to the lectures since that is where you'll get the clearest explanation on what you're learning. Be sure to buy a planner though! There are about 4 assignments a week: readings due mon/tues., and then a worksheet, vocab quiz, and a concept map due that weekend. Dr. A shows she cares. Would take again!!
Dr. A is truly an amazing BIO 181 teacher! There are a lot of assignments but once you get into the habit, they are helpful for taking the biweekly quizzes. If you ask her to go over your biweekly quiz she is very helpful and accommodating. She is a very sweet and genuine person who cares about her students! (what she says is noteworthy!)
Dr.A is wonderful. How BIO181 is structured, if you put the effort into the quizzes and get a 90% average you don't take the final. Dr.A makes it easy to get good grades on the quizzes, she teaches passionately and does a good job reviewing things that aren' clear. There is a fair bit of reading you need to do, I urge you to do it. It helps a lot.
Dr. Araya-Anchetta seems like she is an expert in the field of biology, however she does not excel in teaching the course. She was diligent in reminding students of learning outcomes, however never really tied the content together to form the big picture. Additionally, the lectures are slow paced, which I didn't enjoy.
Attend class, take notes and you will be fine :)
Okay professor. I wasn't really into this class but she was the better choice for bio181. There is a lot of work for what feels like little payout but that is the course structure, not her. Overall, very kind, and okay class.
Class structure was great with clear grading criteria. As long as you keep up with the assignments which are always evenly spaced out, you will do well. She is rather boring but clearly explains all topics.
Definitely show up to Dr. A's lectures. If you want an amazing grade, watch her learning outcomes videos (which are repetitive from lectures, but you'll do amazing on the bi-weekly quizzes). A great professor, but sometimes, I felt as if she didn't really care about students. Still, if you want to learn and one less final, take Dr. A!
Her lectures are very boring, slow, and confusing. She hand writes the notes in class which is a waste of time and frustrating. I learned more going to SI once a week than actually attending her class. Save yourself and choose a different professor for bio 181.
Lectures the entire class essentially and still cannot make it through the material for each week. Would only recommend taking because of how easy her work is. However, be warned the tests are harder than the homework and she words it like a middle schooler who just read a thesaurus. Study hard and do the homework and you'll get an easy A.
She was a good professor I liked how she set up her lectures, but the homework assignments took hours to do and her exams are very difficult.
This class was by no means bad, but I would never take it again. Class is the teacher taking notes and us copying them. She has openly said that the tests are going to ask questions that we did not cover in class. Studying for this class is so difficult because you simply need to study everything. Literally. Also attending SI is very helpful.
This course with Dr. A has extremely unfair tests. The questions are specific and are designed to trick you. Some of the content on exams is not found in the notes or even the book. Her lectures are painfully slow and boring. Also, there are hours of homework a week. I would not recommend taking this professor at all.
Dr. A is intelligent and clear of what the expectations are. I enjoyed how she did the notes with us to help show us exactly what she wanted us to take from it. There is a lot of homework, but that also means a lot of extra buffer points. There was multiple extra credit opportunities. Her exams are more difficult than the lecture. Overall, good.
Dr. A is great at what she does. Her lectures are clear, concise, and easy to follow along. She is able to simplify the material in the most practical manner possible. Great professor!
I loved Dr. A. Her class was super easy, all you have to do is pay attention to the lecture and you're set for the tests. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and the homework is easy. Sometimes she is a bit unclear during lectures but she is always up for answering questions as long as you ask.
What she teaches in class is barely on the tests, she give you the learning outcomes that will be on the test but in order to get a good grade on the tests you basically have to have a PhD in the subject to get a B or higher. The readings teach you absolutely nothing and take hours.
Dr. A was a great professor! Take notes during lectures + do all of the homework and you'll be fine. The hw can be a lot, make sure to stay on top of it. Also, tests can be worded confusingly since she wants you to apply what you have learned to different scenarios. She's also very kind, if you're confused just reach out or attend SI sessions :)
Dr. A was so nice, very accessible in office hours. There is lots of homework but not difficult.
Make sure to go to lectures even if attendance isn't mandatory. She doesn't give out exam reviews unless your there in person.
Dr.A is a good teacher, but only in comparison to the other BIO 181 teachers. Reality is she is a very difficult teacher that expects you to study the content well, if not, you will NOT do well on her exams. If you take the class you have to put in the work, that means studying until the content is memorized. If you take her, be prepared.
Very nice and respectful professor, don't skip lectures. Assignments/Tests are pretty easy as long as you pay attention and take good notes.
Dr. A is kind but not very engaging, which is probably a product of the class size, but unfortunate. She often shushes the few students who regularly try to answer her in class. You can't see your tests after grading unless you attend office hours, which makes it hard to learn from mistakes. Attend lectures and take good notes. SI is a good idea.
I loved this professor. She explains concepts well whereas the book is full of fancy words that mean nothing. She does stutter often but she really is a sweet lady. As long as you pay attention and think critically, you'll be ok. Attendance is mandatory so I suggest getting a buddy or two in the class just in case if you miss class.
Her exams are incredibly difficult which was proven by our little over 50% average on every single one. Very little extra credit opportunities, and her lectures are hard to follow. Wouldn't recommend taking her unless you have to. Very unlikely you'll get a good grade in this class unless you have a PhD in Biology.
Do not take this class! Her exams are extremely hard and all of it is lecture based and even if you do the reading from the online textbook does not help. She never offered extra credit and if she did, it was someone else that came to her class for a survey. I absolutely hated this class. I would never take this professor EVER again.
ALWAYS, always, go to the lectures or else you will not understand what is happening. She refuses to post the notes online, so if you must miss a class make sure you have someone in class who has the notes. If you miss a test, you get a zero, but she does drop the lowest test score at the end of the semester.
Ana is a super sweet lady, but she is a tough grader and her class is 100% lectures. There is a lot of homework and her tests are really hard. She usually does curve the test grades but if you don't pay attention it is a hard class to get an A in.
This teacher was honestly one of the worst I have had in a while. She is what I describe as 'deceptive', parading niceties to us and I believed her, until on a day of an exam I got got sick and was throwing up all morning - she informed me I could not reschedule my exam and would give me a zero if I didn't show up and said it was 'my choice'.
Dr A was a very knowledgable professor and was clearly confident in her teaching. Classes were all lecture and notes. There was a concept map, reading assignment on McGraw, and vocab quiz every week. We took 4 exams and they were extremely difficult without thorough studying. All exams are in person and the other professors are online.
Though Anchetta did start off great it really went downhill once exams started. There was no study guide for them & they had proven to be time and time again to be very difficult. I spent many hours studying and barely made it out with an A. Would not recommend.
Dr. A is a great professor for freshmen with a team of dedicated teacher assistants who host regular SI meetings. Advice from someone who could have done better: - Show up to all lectures, sit in the back, and wear a mask if you're sick - Complete ALL homework and ALL extra credit - Don't settle for 3/5 or anything below a B on assignments
Dr. A is okay. She talks a lot and tries to be helpful. She doesn't post anything (study guide ect.) that could assist in studying besides the topics. She doesn't post notes. Her tests are very difficult and unless you are 100% confidant on your knowledge you won't get a high grade.
Dr. A was an excellent professor. The lectures were very good. Everything that was on the exams we went over in class, all you had to do was review class notes. There is a decent amount of homework but if you do it all without cheating, it sets you up for success. My only issue with her was she would say some political things in the class.
I do not recommend taking this class with this professor. Her lectures are not bad however, that's all the material you're given. For tests there are no study guides or reviews besides the SI sessions which are usually just Jeopardy games. I wish I did not switch to this professor.
Her lectures are way too fast and she is extremely hard to understand. She is very scattered and unorganized. I struggled with her tests and went to SI sessions as well as going to several of her office hours and she did not even attempt to help me. Take another professor.
Dr. was great overall, make sure to study the learning outcomes gone over class and you'll be fine for the exams.
Dr. A is definitely the best option out of the BIO 181 professors. The tests are based of learning outcomes that are gone over in class but many times things are included on tests that you wouldn't be able to conclude by using the notes. I do like how she does notes with us, but she fell behind often.
She's a great professor but the class is very lecture-heavy. Attendance is mandatory but she uses iClicker and gives extra points so you can miss a couple classes. She does not give out study guides for tests but if you study the learning outcomes from the slides she presents then you should be fine.
Treated us like 7 year olds, really rude and lacking in empathy. I got food poisoning the night before an exam and she tole me I couldn't reschedule and that she would give me an F if I didn't show. Would never take this class ever again.
I would suggest taking any professor other than Dr. A. She gets very off topic in class and doesn't care too much about students. She is hard to follow and doesn't post the notes she goes over in class. I would only take her class if she was the last choice as a professor #trust
I wish I had any other professor for this class. My peers make the content more understandable than she does. It's hard to follow along with her in class which makes her tests even worse, so far I haven't seen a class average above a 60. I would not recommend taking this class with her.
Pick another
I have never once struggled in a science course, until it came to this class in specific due to Dr. A. I learn more from teaching myself and with help from my peers because the way she teaches is very erratic and hard to follow. She is all over the place with her words and I have had a hard time succeeding in her class.
The professor is knowledgeable, but the class is very lecture-heavy. Attendance is mandatory, and the tests cover a lot of material not explicitly covered in class notes. Unstuckstudy and study groups helped me prepare effectively.
Science isn't really my thing, and it didn't help having Dr. A. She's so confusing, she often goes on long tangents that don't make any sense or have anything to do with what we're learning. The exams had stuff that wasn't covered in the lectures, and we had so much homework assignments.
Dr. A is such a wholesome person. Professor wise, she may come off as a little harsh but it is for the benefit of becoming a better student. Your grade heavily weighs on exam scores, but lecture notes and the other assignments she assigns for us to do helped me get high test scores.
Dr. A was definitely the best BIO 181 professor out of all three and she was always very clear with the content. She even had a great team of TAs to help with review sessions and office hours for additional support. Jacob specifically made a great impact on me so if you can get into his class, you are super lucky, he was always very helpful!
There are 5 exams throughout the semester which include the final. Each exam covers things that were not thought in our lectures, leading me and other students to always feeling unprepared regardless of how much we studied and a very low class average score. Also like many others said Dr.A can be very disorganized and hard to follow.
She was an overall okay teacher. The class is very much lecture based, and she takes attendance through iclicker so it's best to try not to miss any classes. When it comes to her teaching style, she just talks at us the whole time and writes over the PowerPoint. Shes pretty monotone and a semi slow talker but you get used to it.
Make sure to take good notes in lecture and study them. Bio itself is a hard class, but she made it very easy to do well. So much extra credit ended with a 101 and didn't have to take the final. As long as you try you will be fine. Shes pretty funny too. Does notes fast.
As long as you try your best, take good notes, study. You should be good. I went to a few SIs and she gave us extra credit for it. I think she was pretty easy on us and she was very nice. She actually seems like she cares about her students and roots for your success. I'm honestly surprised she doesn't have a higher rating...
Took her for bio181 and loved her. She's friendly and cares about your success just as much as you do. She's lecture heavy but gives good, informative, and clear lectures imo. Everything that will be on an exam is clearly outlined in the modules allowing you to study/learn online in further detail if you didn't attend or understand the lecture.
Dr. A's class felt very disorganized and behind the other classes. My friends with other professors often had to explain material to me because I was so lost and. If you review on your own and attend SI sessions you can achieve the grade you want, however I wouldn't recommend taking her class if you're like me and need structure in your lectures.
Her lectures felt very all over the place and unorganized. She also does not do a review day the class before the exam, instead she goes over new content that will not be on the exam 2 days later which is SUPER UNHELPFUL. Also no study guides for the exams which just sucks. Some homework and exam questions are worded super poorly and confusing.
Anchetta is a sweet professor who cares about her students. However, she isn't great at teaching and will often get distracted. I would highly recommend attending SI or TA hours.
Great professor overall, the exams had very specific content, so you have to study everything possible.
Dr. A is very kind. She believes everyone in her class can succeed and belongs there. Sometimes her class can be slow, and she usually gets behind on material, but she always gets everything taught in time for the exams. She didn't do it my semester, but she usually offers no final if you get A's on all 4 of her exams. She also cracks dad jokes.
She ain't Buschmann I can tell you that much
Ana is a fine professor. She makes good slides and wants to help her students a lot. On the other hand, she gets confused a lot during lectures and gets side-tracked often. Not bad but not outstanding. Class is easy enough as long as you always attend.
Dr. A is a good professor if you are sitting front and center and if your eyes can read chicken scratch. She teaches well however she can leave you on cliffhangers and expect you to know/find things that you have NO knowledge on. She's not bad, she is very kind but her teaching methods aren't the best.
Dr. A was the sweetest lady and really cares about her students. Her lectures can be a little boring at times but she conveys clearly what she expects you to learn and was fantastic at answering questions. I loved taking her class.
She is really hard to understand and take notes from. Really not great at explaining things and I felt like I had to teach myself the class
I personally wouldn't take this class again, it's already a hard class and my class was a week behind on notes, which ment that the smartbook didn't align with the notes in class or they were over the same unit but farther than what had been gone over.
Our class was a week behind on notes which ment the smartbook didn't align with the notes, either we went over future material in the smartbook or half of the material covered in class, which made me feel like i was behind in learning the material and had to play catch up.
She is very difficult to even understand, and her lectures move a million miles an hour with nothing being posted so if you miss a lecture or miss a slide of the lecture, you'd better hope someone else has it. She is rude and yells at students when they don't participate, but you can not understand what she is saying.
I really liked this class and professor. She's straight to business, but her lectures are very chill and clear. (I don't get people saying you cant understand her?) She also gives around 3 extra credit opportunities which are very easy. She also drops your lowest exam. As long as you do the smartbooks and study correctly you'll get an A no problem!
Overall, I really liked her. At the beginning of the semester I thought I would be miserable but in reality, she's not harsh on you, she's just true. Sure, some policies she has are a bit over the top. Please, don't skip class if you can help it. it's just important to do the readings, take advantage of SI, and pay attention to lectures.
Dr. A teaches in a way that is perfect for a mind like mine. I understand her teaching style may not be for everyone, but you get attendance points, extra credit for SI and TA sessions. The class is straight forward, and most assignments will be posted far enough ahead of time. I would definitely take one of her courses again in the future.
Dr. A is a super caring professor. Her exams are detailed, but they feel very manageable if you attend class and actually engage with the textbook homework rather than just completing it for the grade. She also offers multiple opportunities for extra credit and drops the lowest grade in each assignment category, including exams.
Anchetta was a super caring person but she was not the best at teaching. I didnt underdstand what she was saying half the time and didn't get the lectures. This class was hard for me because I didnt take chemistry and all together was just a tough class. But the professor is super caring and sweet. She just needs to work on her teaching methods.
Anchetta is a very sweet lady, however her teaching isn't great. She goes off on tangents about unrelated things, and gets confused with what she's saying. If you take detailed notes and study a good amount, getting an A is absolutely doable. Long story short, was she awful? No. But was she great? Also no.
Dr. A is a very kind person. I really enjoyed her class but it was difficult. She writes small and sometimes her wording is confusing. I would show up to class early and get a spot in the front and it made a really big difference. I also took notes on my ipad so I could label everything that she posted on canvas. AND GO TO SI!!!
Dr. A is very hard to follow. She's nice, but she gets side-tracked a lot and doesn't explain things well. She moved very fast, but I aced every exam by studying outside of class. I wouldn't take her again unless I had to. However, she does offer good extra credit opportunities.
She's a kind caring teacher and she truly does love biology. I think the best advice I can give is pay attention and don't get into side conversations since she doesn't appreciate being interrupted. If you attend the class, take clear notes and go to SI which can also give extra credit you'll do well!
all my friends took bio, just diff teachers, & we all agreed Dr.A was the most confusing one. shes really sweet, but can make the lectures more confusing then they should be. she will randomly go fast on the notes but will refuse to go back or share her notes so friends in this class is a must. its lecture heavy, so show up everyday and study a lot
I enjoyed her class. She does go on tangents a lot which can mess up timing but we always caught up at some point. If you do not like her or her teaching style early, please I beg of you, SWITCH PROFESSORS. Do not be the kid in the back whining about her when you can switch out and change professors. Nobody likes those kids.
