I have always struggled with math but coming into her class and listening to her explain lectures has made everything more understandable. She is very enthusiastic about teaching and goes over examples for every single topic/subtopic.
Doesn't give part marks on the midterm and final exam like other professors. So even though your steps through the question are correct but the final answer is off by a couple decimal points, you'll get a zero.
Shes good at what she does, but really hard marker and teacher. Doesn't give part marks. If you don't do the written part for the myitlab she wont give you marks for the assignment. She definitely does make math more understandable with real life experience.
Tough grader, will not give partial marks, even if you show work and make silly mistakes like getting decimals wrong you get a 0. Claims "in the real word, you wont get part marks"..... ok? Real world everything is done in a software, if you understand the concept you're good. w/e Actively looks at ways of reducing your grade.
Ms. Duff is a very sweet woman who aims to bring up her students whether it be grade wise, or as a person overall. She makes it clear that without effort, even the minimum grades are hard to attain so effort is really everything. She's amazing!
I've had Dr. Duff in BUSI1915 & BUSI1916 and she is great at what she does. What you get in this course all comes down to you practicing outside of class and of course if you don't understand you can always ask her!
Great prof who really cares about her students!
Great prof who really cares about her students, also willing to help outside of class
Very good professor who clearly cares and knows what she is doing
Calc prof - No time on quizzes leading to students rushing and making mistakes - the profs marking critera is TERRIBLE, extremely strict -always going over the lecture time making students late to other classes - one of those professors who thinks that her class is the only important
To give you an idea what kinda prof she is, even though I had her for an online only course and all of our marks are uploaded onto canvas she won't turn on the final grade total (that canvas has built in) because she wants us to calculate our final grade ourselves because it's a math course and then email her to see if we calculated it properly.
Shes just the worst
She's a really nice person and she explains things in her lectures very well, but she's tough with the online format. Harsh deadlines to submit things and her grading is pretty tough too. But overall if you do the work I think she's a good prof
very difficult prof! not enough time on quizzes and tests
Made online class as hard as possible and it was the first year she was teaching it. I knew at least 10 people who failed and got their grades boosted to pass. Weekly reading summaries that didnt help, weekly quizzes that just showed you how much you were failing, not to mention how we got 10 mins to do a quiz, and 1 min to hand it in or u failed.
I am fighting for my life this class
Gives very less time for quizzes.
Amazing professor. Such a nice person and so helpful.
She's the worst. Doesn't give enough time for quiz's and tests. Very tough grader and refuses to give part marks.
She makes other students answer questions and blames them for not answering them during class and that they're the reason if all material isn't covered in the lecture as opposed to her time managing like she lectures us to do. And she doesn't let students see their marks or let them go back on questions for tests, which is ridiculous.
If I could take every course of Anas, I would. Amazing, kind, available outside of class. I cant even tell you how much she went above and beyond if you ask for help and Ive had her twice. She teaches some hard classes, but I definitely couldnt have gotten a great mark if it wasnt for her help.
She goes way too fast and never explains it. She just ends up scribbling a bunch of jot notes that you have to copy down for marks even though you have no clue what she just wrote. Don't take this prof.
Probably the toughest online teacher, we barely get any time on quizzes, only just enough to finish the question and rush to type the answer in with only 2 seconds left. She says that its timing based on how well you know but it's ridiculous. Plus she refuses to tell students anything because of "course policy" that doesn't exist.
Definitely one of the hardest professors in the school. A very tough grader and goes through too fast with barely any explanations. You miss a class you are doomed!
Their by-the-book teaching style makes things more difficult than they need to be especially when it comes to quizzes and tests. Some activities in the course curriculum such as the weekly summary of textbook chapters just seem out of place in a math course. If you are not confident in your math abilities and just want to pass, avoid this prof.
If I could give a 0 I would! She is the worst, she is not understanding at all and gives out weekly quizzes with 10 mins to finish it.
Worst professor I have ever had AVOID AT ALL COSTS
The absolute hardest professor I've ever had. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She doesn't record lectures, she gives weekly 10 minute quizzes that have 30min worth of work needed. She makes this course terribly difficult when it doesn't need to be. If you're in her class DROP IT.
try to avoid taking her class. she is the literal worst. take Asifa's business math class instead!!!!
very tough prof and a very tough grader pointless weekly readings and 10-minute quizzes which isn't enough time at all and never answers any type of emails also. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS
Worst prof I've ever had. Everything had to be handwritten for some reason and you're not allowed to use the same device you use to take the quiz for writing the quiz. If for whatever reason canvas thinks you switched windows or your computer went to sleep IT'S AN AUTOMATIC ZERO. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS!!
She is great at teaching but quiz/test time is awful. AVOID!!!
Strict on so many things for no reason. Course is terribly designed. Lectures are good, everything else about her has been the absolute worst learning experience I've ever had. Designs the course to be PURPOSEFULLY stressful and isn't open to feedback. Nice person, absolutely horrible professor.
obviously knows what shes trying to teach, but is very bad at explaining it if you dont pick it up as she's teaching, she will just keep asking you the question so that you can get to it yourself even if you dont know it.
She was so bad, I wanted to give her a zero. But thats not possible. So, I give her a 1.
Waste of money drop her class
absolutely worst prof/teacher ive ever seen. expects you to do a test in 45 minutes that covers 3 chapters. more than half the class was complaining to her at the same time in the google meet, however she disregarded our concerns. definitely taking this up with the university...
UOIT is known to have the best profs, but not her. not fair doesn't listen to her students arrogant PLEASE TAKE ANOTHER PROF 80% of my class is failing atm
She talked a lot at the beginning then had to rush through the class. The quizzes were a lot with only 15 mins. Her answers were vague when you email her. Must take notes during class and submit them right after. Very strict
The worst teacher I've ever had, and I've had too many horrible teachers in my life. She makes us write notes and submit it at the end of class or else we don't get marks, we get quizzes that we're supposed to do within 15 minutes, but it virtually is not possible to do, and she disregards those who oppose her and try to reason with her. Avoid her!
Goes off topic too much
This professor marks terribly hard. 100% would not take again.
Pretty much a useless prof, Disregards feedback, wastes time and teaches not related to what will be tested. Alot of time needs to be sunk studying outside of class which I'm sure not everyone has. It seems to be very easy for her to give 0s She values her knowledge too much and is very arrogant. Need more time for quizzes. Lost hope in class
Dr. Duff was an amazing professor. You must work hard and learn to work under pressure. However, she is willing to take the time to make sure you succeed even offering optional 6 hour preparation sessions for tests. Her teaching style provides real world application and she ensures you fully understand concepts by having you recite it at times.
First off, she's very kind, jovial/lively (besides the point). ASSESSMENTS are WAY TOO SHORT and you CANNOT BACKTRACK (online)/questions are extremely difficult/MARKS EXTREMELY HARD. For 'Introductory calculus' she makes it harder than AP calculus (High school, speaking from experience). Dont bother asking her to change her methods (She wont).
Actually just an awful teacher. She talks way too fast and goes through the content without explaining it. For the quizzes, you are only allowed 15 minutes to do 3 questions and take pictures of all your answers and upload it online. Very bad class avoid at all costs.
Awful teacher. Is disrespectful and extremely arrogant. She gives tests and project with little to no time to complete it. Quizes every week with a 10 minute time limit. She would then do these exact questions in the class and take 30 minutes to do it.
Oh gosh get ready for this class. If you have a loaded semester make sure you drop this, her teaching is the equivalent of taking 3 courses. She has tests on Saturday morning.YES SATURDAY MORNING AT 9AM! she makes you submit lecture notes handwritten. How crazy can she be, so psycho she even decided to scrap the schools textbook and make her own.
Ana Duff is the type of professor that will make you hate not only math but life in general. she applies backwards thinking regularly and you either do things her way which means a lot of unnecessary steps or you fail.
Dr. Duff has the harshest and worst grading schemes I have ever seen in my life. Marks were lost for capital letters and placements of equal signs. 10-minute weekly quizzes that no one could finish in time. Rushes through content like a knife through butter. AVOID her at all costs if you can
Worst professor at OTU, she doesn't care if her students fail. She gives you literally 10 minutes for quizzes and that's not nearly enough time for 5 questions. Avoid her at all costs, speaking from experience.. wait to take the course with another prof.
A very poor experience taking her class. She gives nowhere near enough time to complete quizzes and tests. In our class everyone was complaining that it wasn't possible to do the quizzes in her outrageous timeframes. she attempted to prove us wrong by doing some example questions herself, and even she couldn't do it in time, and its her material.
Dr. Duff made this course incredibly difficult with her teaching style. She also gave weekly quizzes with very little time to complete them. She wasted a large portion of time in her lectures talking about irrelevant topics. Honestly, drop her class to save yourself from the suffering.
I believe she genuinely cares about what she's teaching and wants her students to learn and succeed by grading rather harshly. However, I think she tends to forget these are not the students' ONLY classes and not everyone has time for office hours weekly with an already packed schedule. We can't even see our quizzes without going to the office.
Uses a time wasting approach to questions and will deduct marks if you don't follow it to the most minute detail. She does not give nearly enough time to complete quizzes or tests. Wastes time in lectures constantly and won't even let us see our overall grade. We have to calculate it ourselves. Do not take her class.
The most worst and hardest grader ever.
Worst teacher drop her course and never take it
Worst professor/teacher I have ever had. Grades extremely harshly and you have to spend more time explaining the way she wants it or she doesn't give marks. Most of the time doesn't cover all the topics in lectures and wastes time in them. Avoid at all costs if you can.
Worst teacher i have ever had in my life.
Dr Ana Duff, Is a good teacher don't get me wrong but she is a very harsh marker, this course is mandatory and there was no other teacher at the time of writing this that teaching this course. Not to mention the Weekly 10 mins quizzes are good but I wish it wasn't worth for marks because they are really hard to do in 10 mins.
- hard grader, cares about the most absurd things - homework heavy class - need to study even for the quizzes - can be exempt from the final exam if you get 70% or above on all of the term tests - she's not a mean prof just super stuck in her ways - would recommend taking this with a different prof however it is doable with the right mindset
just don't do it \trust your bro.
Professor Ana Duff's math class didn't meet my expectations. The excessive workload, unorthodox teaching style, and negative attitude created a disappointing learning experience. Students deserve better.
If you have Ana Duff, be ready for the worst semester of your life. She gives quizzes every Monday, with a 15 minute timer for 4-6 questions, which is not a lot of time to do a 5 question math quiz. I recommend dropping the course if not buckle up your in for a ride. Oh also she does tests on Saturdays, yes Saturdays!
What kind of teacher makes tests on Saturdays, makes note-taking mandatory, and only allows 15 minutes for quizzes on early Monday mornings without exceptions? Ana Duff does.
Ana Duff is undoubtedly my worst professor to date. I study a lot but since she "wrote" the textbook, it's just as confusing as her lectures. Her meticulous yet unclear expectations, disregard for students' time, and habit of rushing through complex topics makes this class much more difficult than it needs to be. Steer clear of this class.
Stay away, drop it please. It isn't worth it chose a different prof
Do not take any class Duff is teaching. I have been to countless peer tutors, academic advisors, PASS classes, even all the tutorials and they still don't help to get a successful passing grade acceptable for your GPA. Ana Duff is by far the worst teacher, her lectures make no sense, and there is a high chance you won't pass her class first try.
Worst professor. Such a negative attitude and gets off by seeing students fail which creates an unwelcoming learning environment.15 minute quizzes every Monday, TESTS on SATURDAY's (you can't leave early) and it is impossible to do well on any graded assignment bc everything has to be done HER way or no way. Stay far away from this professor.
Honestly, Dr. Duff isn't as difficult. You just gotta put in the effort and you'll do okay. I don't enjoy her teaching style as she gets off track and emphasizes on irrelevant details. My tip is to do practice questions each day until you understand the concepts. Her lectures tend to be boring, if you don't enjoy math, don't take it with her.
Dr. Duff is one of the most caring professors I have ever had. She truly does want all her students to succeed (especially if you go to her office hours). The course itself is hard but I don't believe that Dr. Duff makes it any harder than it would be with a different professor. Study hard and see her when you have questions.
This class is by far the toughest course in my first semester. However, it has helped me develop some great habits for university. ! MAKE SURE YOU GO FOR QUIZ AND TEST REVIEWS ! KEEP UP WITH THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS! DO NOT MISS LECTURES/TUTORIALS Professor Duff is a tough cookie, but she really care for the ones who want to succeed.
Worst math teacher, please switch to\ Asifa if possible. Duff's class requires a min of 70% on all. 3 unit tests (not 70% avg, 70% EACH TEST) in order to opt out of exam. Asifa only needs 50%. Too many quizzes in duff's, no multiple choice. Strict Marker.
Very Versatile
Terrible teacher gives no time on tests and does the easiest questions in class and puts the hardest on tests
She's not even bad. Yes, she could be a pain sometimes but that's because she's pushing you to do better, that's all. If you practice what she teaches, attend lectures & tutorials, and go to her to get feedback in office hours, you'll end up fine 100%.
Her marking style is different, but she's just preparing us for when calculating a number isn't good enough. You have to explain your entire thought process. She wants you to succeed, that's why she's always advertising her office hours, which you SHOULD GO TO. Out of all my classes, I feel I learned the most here, more than just the math.
The lectures are brutal if you don't write fast, because you'll have to choose between writing marked notes or actually pay attention to an extremely slow and tangent filled lecture. Oh and everything has to be handwritten, she'll actively make you put away your devices. Overall treats the students like they're kids.
If Ana Duff is your professor RUN AWAY. This professor is an absolute narcissist who ONLY wants things done her way. There are quizzes at the start of EVERY class. She only gives 15 minutes yet expects an outrageous amount of detail for the answers. She doesn't curve or reveal averages as she claims that "it doesn't matter". Save your GPA and drop.
Dr. Ana Duff is intelligent. Unfortunately her people skills are lacking. While she understands the material and can teach one on one well, her marking style is merciless. I learned logical skills from her courses, but nothing that makes putting up with her destruction grading style worthwhile, nor safe. From a serious student; RUN. Good luck.
Dr. Duff is a highly intelligent professor who struggles with social skills. Dr. Duff put a graph on screen that showed where her students scored on their tests. (no names shown) majority of us were failing by the first test, and most did not make it through the semester with a passing grade. Avoid duff and take math with Asifa instead. Dangerous.
Dr. Duff has been very challenging. After one month, most of the class is failing because of her deliberately hard weekly quizzes and unit tests. Quizzes are short answer only and given every class. She offers no formula sheets or support, expressing disappointment without providing any help. Demands tons of detail, beyond normal math work.
baddddddddd
all i gotta say is good luck, shorty jus yaps non sense
You'll hear she's a tough grader, and it's true. However, if you attend her office hours, she'll guide you to the level of calculus she expects. Her lectures are excellent, and focusing on them will help you pass. My only issue is that her quiz grading rubric was unclear, which made the assessments confusing.
Horrible prof, would NOT recommend. The course material is easy and so are the quizzes and tests, however she does too much and marks them extremely tough. Doesn't matter if you answer everything correct, she will fail you for not doing stuff the way she EXACTLY wants it. Never expect full marks. Lectures the crap out of you. Do it her way or don't
Meant to put a 5 difficulty on the last review!!!! The class is tough!!!
does not teach well and makes things difficulty. if you don't do it her way she take marks off even if your answer is right
If you are not able to be accustomed to her teaching style before the full refund deadline, drop it and take it with another professor. Her course content is quite simple, but do not let that fool you, as when you see your first quiz your life will flip.
she does not promote learning whatsoever
Unfortunately, I found this class challenging due to the instructor's teaching style. The lectures sometimes went off-topic, making it hard to stay engaged and follow the material. Additionally, the atmosphere in the classroom didn't feel supportive, which impacted my learning experience.
Don't take her course
I dont undertand how the Ontario tech even allows a course to be this difficult
Honestly I have no clue how this teacher is even allowed to teach in University (Arguably one of the most important stages of your life). She almost never explains anything properly, all her quizzes and tests feel hard for no reason, and she as a professor doesn't seem to care that much about helping other students. If you can, DO NOT TAKE HER!
Honestly everyone complaining about her probably do not pay attention in class, and do not take the time to study. she is honestly a very kind teacher, show up to her office hours and study for her class and you WILL be fine. I only got a low mark because I didn't realize that I had to do any of that first year
if you want to be happy do not take this class with Ana Duff, she is a heavy grader and doesn't give you criteria of how she grades. Class content is super easy (grade 11 math) but makes it feel like I'm taking calc. She has no mercy in grading and honestly made me feel hopeless about passing her class. her office hours are useless as well.
As a professor: She is a very very tough grader and isn't going to hide the fact that if you do not do it EXACTLY as she does, she will give you a bad mark (even if the math is right, that doesn't mean you get full marks. You may not even get any marks). Her teaching method is hard to understand as she often overcomplicates a topic. Quiz every week
The toughest part of this class is learning her marking rather then the math. Go to office hours and learn how she marks and go to lectures/tutorials and you'll be chilling. Also do the application questions she posts since those are most common on tests and quizzes. Goodluck yall.
do not take this class with her.
She is a good person, but she is superrrr nit-picky with her grading. I could not pass this class for my life, and it was very depressing. I got Dean's list but still barely passed this class. The content is not hard, but the grading is ridiculous. Please take Asifa Amir if possible, you will thank me for it.
This is going to be one of the toughest classes in first year, so buckle up and get ready to learn. Although Dr. Duff possesses substantial mathematical prowess, she unfortunately lacks common understanding of student needs / abilities and only accepts work done her way.
She's a tough grader but she teaches well. If you go to her office hours, your chances off passing increases.
I put a lot of effort into this class but in the end it wasn't enough, Do yourself a favor and take this class with another teacher or take it on its own. You are not only going to have to learn the math, but also the very specific way it is graded. I learned a lot, but in the end it was just too much.
Before taking the course I saw the reviews and I was intimidated. I quickly learned that to be successful you may have to adapt your approach to problems. She teaches you her way, and to excel you need to execute your work in the way she teaches it. With math, practise problems are your best friend and she definitely emphasizes it.
I came in not really knowing what to expect. She's a super nice teacher, and puts a lot of effort into her work. Do the practice questions, and u will do fine. Practice, Practice, practice! It's a lot of work but you get what you put into it.
Math shouldn't be this hard. Duff made general algebra concepts unnecessarily complex. She doesn't accept different approaches, even if it's right, but it isn't her method. please please take another prof for math
good luck!
course contributed to my mental health battle!
even through studying, tutor help, office hours and more........failed with a F!? insane level of difficulty!
heads up. take another teacher if you can. and get your hands dirty in the course if you want to do well
if u see this class on the transcript, uh oh
course makes me wonder why tuition is $5,000 a pop
typa course that make you pick up a trade
after a lecture of singing and why you should move to the back of the bus...... Math takes place also!
Horrible professor overall
Worst Prof at Ontario Tech
The professor herself is awesome. Dr. Duff makes sure that students understand the concept and if they do not, they can come to any of her office hour sessions and get the help they need. She is a tough grader but she never wants her students to fail. There are weekly quizzes at the beginning of class but those can be used to review for the tests!
very nice lady that is highly proficient in the area of calculus but unfortunately lacks people's skills and is not the best teacher, she usually goes off topic on random stories during lectures then proceeds to rush the last 10 minutes, she turns simple concepts into complex ones by adding her way of doing things, she is a very tuff grader...
The calc teacher marks terribly, demanding everything be done exactly her way, even if the answer is correct. Practice questions give a false sense of preparation, while tests and quizzes feel like they're designed to trip students up.
She marks terribly, demanding everything be done exactly her way, even if the answer is correct which was hilarious to me.The classes were so boring i stopped attending after a week. She inspired me to continue not taking university serious. I tutored other students so that the dont fail the class. President's List again. Im so bored at this place.
Just don't bro, just don't.
whoever gives this professor anything other than a 1 is LYING. Worst professor I've ever taken. With the lack of social skills this professor has it blows my mind she became a teacher.
You will not pass a course with her unless you attend ALL of her office hours and ALL classes/tutorials, if you have no prior knowledge of calculus, then your chances of passing are even worse. Will never bell curve even if 90% of the class is failing. Horrifically strict with grading (a single missing word can make you lose 70-80% of your marks).
This professor turned a basic math course into the most work-intensive class in the entire business program. It felt more like a personal development course, pushing me to become an academic machine. It completely transformed how I study, and every course I took afterward felt easy in comparison. Do your homework and go to her office hours.
Poorly teaches students, you'll learn more from outside resources and tutorials than you ever will in her lectures, grades extremly strictly
Truly unfathomable. Her lectures are littered with off-topic tangents. Any and all criticism is met with defensiveness. Her self-authored textbook lacks answers. Tests are overtly tedious in design, while quizzes are nearly impossible to complete in time. No clear grading rubric is provided; positive rapport feels crucial to be graded fairly.
Worst teacher I've ever had. I usually get high grades but this class was impossible to pass. Quizzes every week, she marks extremely hard, she does not start with the basics and goes too fast. If you do not do it perfectly and in her way, you will get no marks. I failed this class and took it again with a different teacher and currently have 95%
go to her office hours and put in the effort you'll do well. attend tutorials, take notes in class, and always do the readings before class. she's very caring and will spend time helping you understand. review your quizzes with her too. she genuinely wants you to succeed and will support you.
Really bad prof. Had her last year and dropped her.
