Professor Longo is clearly a good person, but her lectures does not match the exam at all. She teaches the Evolution portion of Biology 1 and while her notes and powerpoints was very general, the exam was so specific. There's no study guide and clearly doing the notes and getting smokin notes didn't help either.
Professor Longo is super sweet, but her exam for the evolution portion of bio 1 was surprisingly specific. Though her lectures were short, she specifically referenced lots of material from the lectures in her exam that she did not emphasize, so it is important that you know EVERYTHING that she talks about. Do not underestimate this exam!
Very nice and caring teacher during the pandemic. Evolution test for bio1 was awful - had a 15% curve since people did so bad and it was unrepresentative of the content she taught. She meant well but didn't prepare us well. Great at responding to emails and a genuinely nice person.
Dr. Longo was my favorite lecturer of the 3 units. She explains everything clearly and concisely with many examples. However, her exam was poorly written with questions different from anything we'd seen in the class before. The exam ended up being curved so everything turned out alright. Her lectures and SmokinNotes were the best study sources.
Although she was a caring professor, her exam did not reflect the information in her lectures or activities. After listening to all of her lectures, finishing her posted activities, and the LC from the class, the exam was 10x harder. For such an easy unit, she created a monstrous exam. The exam curve was so high that people passed, but still unfair
I really enjoyed disease ecology & evolution w/ Dr. Longo! She makes the course engaging and interactive. The content is interesting and she doesn't assign too much work but you do participate a lot in class with group activities but it's low stress and you end up learning a lot. No exams when I took it, just quizzes, HWs, and a final project.
The information she covers about evolution is so easy and simple, yet she somehow found a way to make the test hard. The wording was bad, the grammar was bad, and the questions were overall vague. She gives you no study guide or practice test, and she's good at lecturing, but the depth of her material isn't laid out like the tests you on.
The worst of the three. I studied for 3 weeks and got 100% on all smokin notes quizzes consistently and got a C on the exam. The exam did not represent what was taught and was horribly written. Avoid at all costs.
I really do not understand how the test was so hard compared to the content she lectured on. By far the worst out of the 3 profs I had for this course. Her exam was significantly harder than the rest.
Dr. Longo was easily the worst Bio prof of the three. Her exam was poorly written, and the questions were oddly specific and not really relevant to biology as a subject. Her lectures were pretty useless, and I stopped watching them pretty early on. Unfortunately, you can't avoid her if you need bio so just plan on doing well on the first 2 exams.
BSC 2010 is separated into three sections, all taught by different professors. After just finishing our last section (evolution) with Longo, I believe she should not be teaching evolutin. She does not even come close to the other two professors, and we were tested on things that were never spoken about. She has a heavy accent, and bad grammar.
Other reviews are too harsh, her accent is fine. She understands the subjects and is easy to contact about questions, but her exam/adherence to the textbook do not make sense. The questions on the exam did not cover many of the modules/skills we learned through the textbook. The questions were almost entirely lecture-fact based.
She sucks. Her lectures contain little information. Her sentences are grammatically incorrect which information hard to learn when you can't figure out what she is trying to say as this is unfamiliar information to students. She goes over stuff in lecture that are not even relevant to exams. Be prepared to be asked obscure & arbitrary information.
Other reviews are too harsh on her accent, which was not the issue. The issue was the questions that she elected to put on the exam, which represented a history course more than a biology course. Questions were worded poorly and overall super confusing. If the whole class does poorly, it is more reflective on the professor than the students.
never again
One of the worst professors that I have ever encountered. Study for three weeks? That doesn't matter on the exam. You will spend most of your time rereading the questions trying to decipher what it is saying than actually answering the questions. She clearly demonstrated a lack of care for her students and was extremely lazy.
The other two professors were by far better than Professor Longo. She failed to prepare us for the last exam and omitted most of the information that you would learn by reading the book, which means that most of the questions I would have not known even if I studied harder. The exam was confusing and poorly written. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER.
She was an OK lecturer, but her exam absolutely did not reflect what she taught. Even though the material was easy, the questions were confusing and did not fairly test our knowledge. If you are taking BSC2010, be very wary of her! Make sure you do well on the other profs' exams, as Longo's tests are very unfair. You have been warned!
There is a great disparity between Longos lecture and exam. She does not truly teach us how to apply the concepts as she expected us to on the exam. Some of the greatest mysteries of life include the existence of god, the meaning of life, and, of course, how one could prepare for Longos exam. The last mystery is the hardest to solve. Good luck...
Honestly, I enjoyed her lectures the most out of all of the professors from Spring 2021, but she provided so little preparation/guidance for the exam. The questions were incredibly random compared to the major aspects of evolution and was not a good representation of what we were taught (class average around a 65), even with help from Smokin' Notes
Loved the unit, leading to the exam I was confident on my knowledge of evolution... then I took the exam. The exam was not an assessment of knowledge but more of your ability to understand the question and look past the abundance of grammatical errors. Would never take her again and I am so glad to be done with Bio.
Dr. Longos exam was a nightmare. I studied and felt confident. The exam had weirdly worded questions with deep application expected. There was also a significant amount of history questions. Just weird. Do not recommend Dr. Longo if you have a choice.
I didn't find Dr. Longo's lectures to be too bad. I actually liked how visually engaging they were. However, her exam was really not that reflective of the content that was taught. The wording was confusing at times and the averages were in the mid 60s across all sections. **Tip: Use the first two exams as your buffer!!!
Test is absolutely nothing like any lectures or homework. Avoid longo at all costs if you can
Here lectures were not bad (and her accent isnt bad or her fault either), she even included some memes, but her exams were nothing like her lectures. They were poorly written and very confusing. She is not teaching because she wants to, she is teaching because it funds her research... In other words, shes a researcher, not a professor.
This lady makes the weirdest evolution exam for bsc2010. I studied hard, did well on the other exams from the other two professors, and got a 60 on her exam. I think the class average was around there. Why not just make a fair exam? Especially when we're all learning online in a pandemic. The questions she writes are ridiculous.
Test not representative of the material, good luck studying for the exam!!!
Her lectures are about as worthless as she is, but she'll make sure that you go into the exam thinking you know something, and then flip the script. Your grade is basically only based on the exams and half her tests have nothing to do with her lectures. stay away.
Her test did not compare to the lectures she gave. I studied way harder for this test than the other two in hopes to get an A in this one but no. It didnt lower my grade too much only b/c of how I did on the other tests. When asked for practice tests, study guides etc, she said knowing the learning objectives were enough. Clearly not.
Dr. Longo is not a terrible professor. Her lectures cover everything you need to know, but her exam is not representative of her lectures. Her exam focused heavily on the first few lectures, and had almost no content regarding the last 2-3 lectures. I recommend reading the textbook, especially the pages she discusses in the textbook.
The evolution material was relatively straightforward. I dedicated time each week to reading the textbook, going over my notes, reviewing her lectures, and working to understand the material. Yet, it didn't matter because Dr. Longo's exam was IMPOSSIBLE and did not reflect much of what we learned. The questions were ridiculous and unfair.
I watched every lecture, took notes, went to basically every one of her office hours, even had smokin notes. Her exam was unrepresentative of what she taught, and she provides little resources to her students
There are a lot of reviews here that may be over exaggerated. Dr. Longo strengths include 1) easy to follow lectures 2) organized materials that coincides with the reading 3) not very difficult homework. On the other hand, her weaknesses lie in her ability to 1) answer questions and clarify points of confusion 2) evenly test lecture material.
There are many other reviews on this page that are not fair to Dr. Longo. Students flooded Rate My Professor after failing the exam, which is more a way for them to express their anger than honestly evaluating the professor. Dr. Longo taught evolution very well, there werent too many assignments or lectures, and it is totally feasible to get an A.
Studied very hard for the final biology rxam and the test was not reflective of the material learned.
People on here failed her exam and are giving her awful ratings that she doesn't deserve. Honestly I liked her lectures and her exam was not hard. She doesn't help you prepare though. The learning objectives are literally everything that's on the exam. Study those and you're fine.
People may give her a bad review because they did not do well on the final exam but the reality is she is a good teacher. Everything she covered in lecture was on the exam. I did study a good amount for the final and did well. I know many students did not and have reflected that on their reviews of her. Realistically, she is a pretty good teacher.
Her lectures were extremely important and should be reviewed. I didn't review as much as I should've, so I got a B on the test, however, I got an A overall. The test had some oddly specific application questions but it wasn't as bad as people say. It isn't super easy, but she was passionate. Take the low score with a grain of salt. It's college.
Dr. Longo's exam was by far the hardest out of all 3 professors. Do well on the first 2 exams and you will be fine. I got a C on her exam and very high A's on the prior 2 so I did end with an A, but her exam was very tough. The material was not hard, but the way the exam was written made the content harder than it actually was. Good luck!
Dr. Longo is a teacher who only puts in the minimal efforts. Asking her questions and help clearing up concepts is difficult, and she does not seem to enjoy supporting her students. The concepts are not terrible, but her level of commitment is lacking in helping her students understanding. Just make sure that you truly understand before taking exam
While the evolution material in itself is not difficult, this professor makes her exams impossible to study for, and impossible to understand the questions. She wants her students to study from the learning objectives, and makes her final exam a history test about Darwin's life. No matter how much you study, be prepared to not get a good grade.
I got high A's on the other two exams, but for this exam I did awful. I studied about 2x as much for this exam as the other two exams and was 100% confident with the material, but the test was NOT representative of the material. Even the people who studied for weeks didn't do too well. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Longo was a fair professor and gave us everything we needed to pass the class. We literally had 8 lectures for the last exam and I didnt watch 3 and still did well on that exam and got an A in the class. I also enjoyed the animal crossing references she put in the test lol, but yea a pretty normal bio class dont know why ppl are trippin
The exam was very specific to her lectures and poorly worded, and she didn't provide a study guide. Still, all I did to study was rewatch her lectures at 1.5 speed near the exam and I got an A, and that's w/o a curve. Her lectures were by far the easiest and fastest to watch. She's not great, but also not as bad as people are saying.
She seemed passionate about what she was teaching, but her exam was extremely confusing and worded oddly: a lot of the possible answers sounded more opinionated than factual, which confused me greatly. I studied hard for her test and didn't do as well as I hoped. A lot of the questions were "most correct" instead of only one being correct
I personally thought Dr. Longo was a pretty good teacher who was passionate about the material. I just rewatched her lectures, reviewed the notes I took on lecture slides, & memorized the few things she told us to know for the exam. The exam was very specific, but everything you need to know is in her lectures.
I honestly enjoyed learning from Longo. Her lectures were to the point and I liked the small jokes and memes she included. However; her exam was oddly specific and the wording was confusing; it did not reflect what we had learned that well. If you study you should be fine, but if you don't pay attention to detail you won't do well with her.
Professor Longo seems like she has her students best interests at heart, however her final exam didn't really show that. The topics she told us to study were barely covered, and instead she quizzed you on random facts of knowledge, like who Darwin's favorite scientist was. Her lectures were informational but they were not set up for the exam.
easiest material but provides no study guide or practice, then refuses to curve the exam
Despite exam 3 having the lowest average, Dr. Longo did not provide a curve. The exam had oddly specific questions many of which were worded poorly. In one of the class sections, the highest grade was a 93 and she said that "we got perfect scores" so there would be no curve. Avoid at all costs.

She is not giving us a curve even though her exam was the lowest average out of the three (66.1). Her reasoning was that it was because people got perfect scores, but in one of her sections the highest was a 93 and she is not going to give them a curve either so her logic does not add up.
I think many reviews here are unfair to Dr. Longo as people posted them after being upset about the exam. I found the exam to be very fair and lecture-based. I watched lectures on 2x speed the day before, studied 5 days in advance, and did very well. Dr. Longo is available in office hours which I recommend if confused, and is overall a good person.
Ok besties I take back what I said before. I still think her lectures were the easiest, but she refused to curve exam 3 even though the average was terrible thanks to its poor wording and ridiculous specificity. Still not the worst since the class was easy overall, but the exam was ridiculous and she's unwilling to compromise with her students.
Lectures were okay but were not representative of her exam as evidenced by the average which was a D. She also did not provide any practice questions or study guide, and her exam was full of vague questions and grammatical errors. She is unwilling to compromise and provide any kind of curve, despite her exam average being the lowest of the three.
As far as day to day work goes this class isn't difficult. Compared to the other lectures in this class, hers were pretty good. However, her exam was extremely vague, and had ambiguous questions with multiple technically correct answers. I studied a lot, but the class average was a 60, and she refused to curve even tho its in the syllabus
She is not considerate of her students. She does not teach in her lectures, and even if you read the textbook and do the learning objectives it is hard. She pulls the exam questions out of her butt. The exam average was a 66 and she is not going to curve it. Not a good professor. Dont take her if youre going to take bio!
I personally thought evolution was the most interesting topic in bio, however Longo's exam didn't correlate with her lectures or what I studied in the book. I got an A on the first two exams, and failed Longo's exam despite studying for a week. Very upsetting since I enjoyed this topic the most and one badly written test ruined my grade.
Terrible. Didnt curve the exam even though the syllabus said she would because she was pissed about all the bad reviews on ratemyprofessor. She shouldnt be teaching at UF. Im convinced she wrote the positive reviews herself. Would give 0/5 stars if I could.
I really enjoyed her lectures; they were concise and interesting. Her exam wasn't standardized though. The honest truth is that even most who got As on the first two exams did much worse on this one. The few exceptions to the rule don't change that fact. Entitlement is not the root of people's concerns. That aside, getting an A overall is possible.
horrible teacher, she said she would curve exam 3 and then she didnt. The average was a 64 (that says something about her teaching). She gave no review material/study guide for the exam and her exam questions were extremely specific and some of the things we didnt even go over in lecture.
Her lectures are terribly boring, and the exam is unreasonably specific to minor points mentioned in passing. She is very unhelpful and so are her slides. She provided no study material other than a brief video (which just said to rewatch the lectures), so there was no way to prepare for her question types other than outside resources.
Avoid Dr. Longo at all costs. She clearly does NOT have her students' best interest at heart and does not care about teaching material.
People are being very harsh to her as a direct result of the Spring 2021 exam. I thought her lectures were really interesting and her teaching style was easy to follow. That being said, the exam was poorly worded and when the TAs predicted a 10 point curve, we got nothing. She does not care about students' success, but hey, welcome to college.
Final exam was worded terribly. The questions were very wordy and hard to read. We were also given about 50 minutes for 30 questions, which is typically a good amount of time, however 30 questions with about 100 words each can be a bit daunting to look at on a final. Teacher did not curve the exam, even though she said she would about 30 min before
Very disappointed in this professor. Unfair treatment and lack of empathy. I would not recommend having a class with her for anyone. How are you not going to give a curve to the last exam when the average was a D?!
Don't be scared off by the negative reviews following the 2021 spring exam 3. Dr. Longo had detailed lectures, lots of reading (as did the other three profs) and a difficult test but overall not too bad if you studied the learning objectives. Ppl retaliated bc they got a bad grade, doesn't reflect the prof. If u can't handle bio1, hope ur not STEM.
Dr. Longo is not compassionate for her students who recently were forced to endure a 15 week semester with no break during a global pandemic. Her exam was not reflective of the material emphasized during the lectures and the average was below a 65% with no curve.
Longo doesnt get the credit she deserves. Yes, some of her questions were specific, but it was all in her slides and as long as you fully understand the material, look/listen to the lecture slides, read the book you will be ok. I got my best grade in this exam. Smokin notes helped drill the info, asking her questions helped clarify anything.
Dr. Longo is not a bad professor in terms of lecturing but I do think her exam was poorly written. We were not provided with any study materials other than a summary video which was just a repeat of the lecture slides. This is unfair considering the other two professors provided these materials.
In all of BSC2010, Dr Longo was the hardest professor. She graded harshly with little feedback and never offered extra credit unless required by administration. Her exam was poorly worded and there was no curve. She is very clearly a researcher who teaches solely for funding.
Really nice lady who knows her stuff, but she has a bit of a hard time explaining it in a way for others to understand. Lectures aren't as long as they were for unit 1, but still take some time. Rewatched all of her lectures and studied for her exam, and despite feeling good about it, I ended up bombing. Questions were much harder than expected.
Out of the three BSC2010, I actually liked Dr. Longo the best. She taught us like adults and was thorough with lectures. For the test, you MUST know the lectures in and out. The questions were straight from her lectures. If you go to her office hours, she can sometimes be confusing when explaining things. I recommend forming a study group.
Dr. Longo does such an amazing job at making this class very engaging and interesting. She is clearly very passionate about the subject and I genuinely learned so much from this class. Class grade is made up of occasional assignments, quizzes, and a final project, all of which were very manageable.
Dr. Longo definitely constructed her section of the course in a way that I was not used to. There wasn't a linear flow to things, and the content was pretty much scattered from random topics that shared a loose connection to the general topic at hand. I had to memorize the most minute of details from her lectures, as that was what was tested.
fast paced, goes through a lot of information in a single lecture and has learning catalytic questions in between so it is very important to pay attention the whole time,
Dr. Longo can't teach. The only contribution she made was reading off slides. Posted an exam review a day before the exam. When students asked questions on the review day about a topic she just said to go back to the slides that were already confusing enough. Too much information, and not enough explanation. Was vague about the exam content.
She often misspeaks without correcting, giving varying info to people. She IS easy to contact. She doesnt answer questions well, saying read the book / ignoring the difficult part of the question. She didnt set reasonable expectations for her unit, never once finishing lecture / giving four times the amount of learning objectives as the plants
dr longo was very passionate and had a lot of care for her students. she is great at responding to emails and discussion comments. her lectures were very informative, albeit a little fast paced. the animals unit is itself fast paced so cant blame her too much. if i had one critique it would be i wish she explained concepts a little more in depth
She really wasn't that bad. Sure, her lectures were information heavy but that's just how it is at UF. I felt that she respected her students and cared about our learning. Honestly, people were complaining more than was warranted as the exam was quite easy and the median score was 80, plus a generous curve and 2 points of extra credit.
She was fine for the animal unit. Her lectures are very fast paced that I stopped going to class and just took notes off the powerpoints she posted and participated in the learning catalytics. Exam was moderately difficult, but had a generous curve and easy extra credit question. Overall, if you put in the work, an A is very attainable.
Professor Longo is not a bad lecturer but she doesn't know how to make it easier for students. She covered so many unnecessary content for the animal unit that's not useful for the exam. She also talks way too fast in the lecture, making it impossible to follow and actually learn anything in class.
She's not that bad for bsc2011, it was her first time teaching and the average was not bad (plus there was a curve). She was a little fast at the beginning but ultimately slowed down when asked. Her Iclicker questions were the hardest but the test was all from the powerpoint so just study that and you'll be fine.
Awful lecturer, would go through around 60 slides a lecture and spoke so fast it was extremely difficult to take notes. Her exam wasn't awful but definitely had questions that were oddly specific. Gave us a bonus question on the exam she promised would be super easy so many people got it wrong that she had to give the points to everyone.
Dr. Longo was a fairly good lecturer, but could definitely slow down to enhance understanding. Her test was specific and challenging. I got a high C with smokin' notes. iClicker questions were unnecessarily hard, but I still got all those points. Overall not bad, but could be better. You'll be fine if you pay attention and participate.
Bio 2 is divided into 3 segments with an exam for each. No final. Professor Longo taught the 2nd segment. She was my 2nd favorite. She was a really good instructor but she put a lot of extra info on the slides, so it was difficult to know what to study.
I had her for the second segment of BSC 2011. Her lectures made me feel like I was listening to a med school physiology lecture - way too much information for an introductory biology class!!! Studying for this exam was a pain, but doable if you're willing to memorize nearly everything on the slides.
Study her lecture slides. Memorize every word on those slides. The entire exam is just her slides. She's very organized and to the point. Easy extra credit, although its only 2 points. Manageable if you memorize everything on her slides. Did I mention her powerpoint slides?
Dr. Longo has a clear passion for animal physiology and made the lectures very detailed. The exam questions were pretty specific so using smokin notes to study was the most useful thing.
I actually loved Dr. Longo for the animal section. Her lectures are informative and fun;If you attended class and studied the slides, that's literally all you need for her exam. It was very fair and had biology jokes at the end to ease nerves. She is not nearly as difficult as her RMP makes her out to be, just put in the work, and you will be fine.
Dr. Longo is very efficient with lecture time—she starts right on time and jumps straight into the content. However, she covers a lot of material in each lecture, making it hard to know what to focus on for exams. She doesn't clearly specify what to study, so I found resources like Smokin' Notes much more helpful in narrowing things down.
Dr Longo taught us more information than required. It was beyond what was in the textbook. When it came to the exam, she used the things she emphasized against us to trick us with very subtle differences in the wording which is hard to discern when she emphasized a topic specifically. Do not take it with her.
If you want a decent exam grade use Smoking Notes, the amount of info each lecture went through was far too much and the exam itself asked tricky questions just to mess with you. Also unlike other semesters where there was a plentiful curve, there was no curve even after the professor herself said not to ask her because there will be one. AVOID!
There was no curve and everyone did horribly. Smokin notes was very helpful but not enough to do well on the exam. Worked so hard over spring break because this exam was the tuesday right after and did not do well. Wasted my time, money, and energy for no reason.
Did not give a curve when the exam was insanely specific and class did not do well. She lacks compassion for her students and was not interested in how they did.
She is your average professor when it comes to lecturing. Many of the questions on the exams were worded poorly and she tries to trick you. I would not recommend.
Her lectures are DENSE, and her delivery doesn't make it better. However, she'd usually tell us what graphs/tables we'd need to know for the exam and what we didn't need to memorize. The exam was almost entirely based on the PowerPoint slides, so there weren't any real surprises. The avg score was a 75, so we didn't get a curve. Not the worst.
Dr. Longo was a fun professor who is clearly very passionate about amphibians and I really liked her unit on Animals. The lectures are very dense and I used smokin notes to help study for the exam and that worked out pretty good for me. But as long as you show up to class and take/review notes, you should know everything you need to.
Her lectures were hard to follow through and the slides were poorly organized. She's a tough grader, does not have a curve and overall was the worst professor of the three professors for this course. Beware of taking her exam, you really want to do well.
Her lectures were rough, she tried to pack a lot of information into each session with not nearly enough time. Her iClicker questions were the hardest, and while the test wasn't too bad, there were questions that were actively trying to trick you. Some questions on the exam were material she had quickly gone over the day prior.
Lectures are either too fast paced or too long, course deviates from syllabus so attend class. iClicker closely follows lectures and not very tricky. Her exam (animals) felt surface level compared to the depth of content in class, but it definitely covered all of the topics. If you have HS bio/physiology experience, class is way easier
She is probably the worst of the 3 bio professors (Dutton and Douglas being the others). She has a lot of content packed into her lectures and had some trick questions on the exam. Additionally, she gave no study resources or curve on her test.
She was your average college professor, she was there to read the slides but ultimately left us on our own to learn and study everything. Smoking notes not necessary for this exam but you need to memorize all of her slides to do well on her exam.
Her slides have a lot of information, which is nice if you miss a lecture, but not when studying for the exam, since her questions are very specific about the material on her lecture slides. A lot of the exam questions purposely tried to trick you. She didn't give us a curve. She spoke very fast, and her lectures were full of too much information.
All I learned from her lectures were that she loves frogs. She was a boring lecturer and did not prepare me well for the exam.
To be successful on the exam, you need to memorize everything in her slides, which are almost 80 slides per lecture. She said there would be a curve on the exam, but she gave us a curve of a 0/0 so take that as you will. Worst section of BSC2011 imo, and she goes way too fast over slides to actually take good notes.
Lectures are okay, not particularly interesting and not the MOST informative; Test wasn't terrible if you really studied (Would HIGHLY rec smokin' notes for this course); Kind but tended to rush certain end of lecture; Ridiculous asks for readings
