She is the BEST teacher I have EVER had. She is smart & really involved with her students, she learns everyones names. It is not easy but u will actually learn something from this class. Ms. Vargas ROCKS! Not to mention that she's SUPER organized. Anyways u have to take her cuz she'll make u a better person or as she'd say a more "ethical" one:)
She is a great teacher. She takes her job seriously, and does the best to help students. She is more than willing to help via e-mail to insure you succeed. Her grading is pretty fair, and her expectations are VERY clear. This however is not to say that her class is easy. Her class is challenging, and I suggest studying for her tests.
She is a very wonderful teacher. She was organized and well prepared. There were no supprises and all you have to do is everythings she says. Warning: make sure you do your speech early and have it prepared If you dont finish your speech early it will bite you in the butt. She helps you get over speech fears. Great teacher! Shes very pretty!
She was wonderful and very helpful. I still go back just to say hello and Im not that type of person. Very easy on the eyes and enjoyed every single class meeting. Just do what is asked and youll be fine. Take good notes on the limited lectures, tests weighted heavily.
hsrd class nice woman
She is amazing! You learn so much in her class and she is so approachable and SUPER organized with her lectures. She really relatese the material to our lives but this is not to say that her class is easy but it is worth is. Ms. Vargas truly was stellar:)
shes a nice woman, very helpful, and an all around great teacher. she does give a TON of work though
She just got married so I think her name has changed but find the right name and take her class. Her class is just fun listeing because she is always energetic and fun. However her exams hard. But it is a speech class so as long as you do your speeches, you will pass the class no matter what.because I'm sure I had a "D" but she gave me a "C"
She is a very nice and young teacher. She gives quite a few speech assigments which arent hard if you dont procrastinate! All her exams and midterms are based on LECTURED NOTES so make sure you take good ones, she doesn't even give reveiw before exam or midterm. She is very clear and very approachable! I recommend her
She is very clear and makes all students feel welcome. She tries hard to make a safe atmosphere, which makes presenting a lot easier and just makes life overall easier. She teachers her subject well, and takes something that would normally be awkward and makes it easier. It does require some work though!
She got married so she's now Mrs. Olaerts. I liked her off the bat because we have the exact same first names. She's extremely friendly and always makes her students feel comfortable. The activities in class are always fun and help a lot with the speeches. I learned a lot and it's honestly NOT a hard class. Just do your work and it's an easy A.
I really liked her she was nice and she was fair. She made speeaking in public not so scary. Just stick with it and you'll do fine!
The class is an easy A -- just STUDY STUDY STUDY for the exams! Her grades are very generous with the papers and presentations. She also keeps the learning as entertaining as possible :)
she is a nice teacher but is hard. she gives a lot of notes but her test are mosty on how to speak and the terms she lets you know what will be on the test so that is what is easy. the actual speeches are what is hard she takes them very seriously and grades hard if you take the class pay attention to how many points you have cuz if you have an 89
Excellent teacher and very organized
Mrs. Olaerts is an amazing instructor. I have taken her for both public speaking & interpersonal comm., and have decided to take intercultural with her this semester. She is by no means an "easy A", but if you are willing to put in the work and really want to learn somthing, she is the instructor for you. Good lecture notes are a must!
I heard a lot about how hard her class is but it's really not too bad. She gives excellent notes that are extremely helpful in exams so take advantage of it. She's very helpful and provides a lot of useful examples. I have to say she's a very beautiful woman inside and out, extremely kind and pleasant all the time. Her class is so worth taking!
Absolutely take detailed notes! Very little use of the book. Write down her examples because that's what she uses on the tests! She makes the learning experience fun and interesting. She's tough on grading and her exams are hard if you don't take notes.
There was nothing INTERPERSONAL about her speech 9 class. It was basically a speech 1 class. You had to present in front of the class just like a speech 1 class. She doesn't prepare you well enough for anything really. Don't worry though I doubt she'll ever teach a SPE-9 class ever again.
Yikes! Sounds like the person below is BITTER & learned nothing at all. Looking at ALL other scores who she has a 5/5 in helpfulness/clarity. I grew ALOT in her class & believe I am better person for it. I'm taking another class from her this sem. public and believe me its very different. Its a shame to see students bash such an amazing professor

Ms. Olaerts is an awesome prof. Her class is easy but at the same time its not. Yo u have to be in class, not that she cares, but if you miss, youre screwing yourself. It was ALOT of fun. Shes good with the notes, very detailed, not too much on the book. I enjoyed her class and recommend her. Im taking 2 more of her classes in spring.
If you are a man don't bother taking her class. She is totally OCD with everything. I think that she is a good person but she lacks real world experience. Her class was helpful for some things but her tests are really odd. She doesn't review, and all her questions are worded really funny to try and trick you. Not a fun class at all.
I love her! It is because of her that I voted and am now going to transfer to a UC. She really is inspiring. I have to say that it felt good to actually work for a grade again because I have not done it in sooo long!!!She cares and challenges you to see what you are capable of. Best professor!!!
She's a great teacher. She truely cares about her students and wants to see them succeed. She is very supportive, especially in public speeaking, considering that to be a hard thing for most people. She is also very approachable. If you get a chance, take her class. You'll walk away with more than just public speaking skills.
She is an awesome person. Her class is no joke though. You must attend and be a good note taker although she is helpful and always willing to help you. If you need help go to her office and it will make things better. Her tests are hard but projects will help.
I have now taken 3 of mrs. olaerts' classes and each time it is a great experience. she is a great teacher, her classes are challenging, however, you get a lot out of them. i took her pub. speak, interpersonal, and debate classes, all very fun and interesting. attendance is not mandatory, but HIGHLY recommended, because you will miss A LOT.
Awesome instructor!
Best teacher I've had. Knows her sh*t and teaches very well, I enjoyed it. Super sweet but she does not play. Her class is not a walk in the park.
Overall great professor. Listen to my advice when I say she makes you feel empowered and confident in your speaking abilities. Made me want to be come a speech major. Possibly changed my life for the better. Class isn't easy, but it isn't hard. Take clear notes. Don't procrastinate and you'll be fine.
I took this class as my very first RCC/ College Class as a Jr. in High School. She is a wonderful teacher, and if you need help just ask. She is always willing to help you understand and don't be afraid to ask questions. We had the political year so it was fun to learn more about candidates. My personal Advice is don't wait to write ur speeches!!!
she was a good teacher overall..but shes a straight A professor and thats all she expects from you...so if you dont do what she thinks is A work no matter how hard you work expect a D or F. she also doesnt really prepare you enough for the work thats expected which doesnt help your grade either..
The best! You learn sooooo much! Very helpful but her office hours are always filled with students so I suggest making an appointment with her because one time I waited for 40 minutes. Not the easiest class but it IS worth it:)
Olaerts is an engaging, dynamic professor. There is considerable depth to her education, so she incorporates ethical, political, and social issues into her discussions. This, along with a fast, high-energy pace, keeps you fixated and class time flies by. Not particularly easy to get an A; however, she is beautiful and charismatic.
Really great teacher. Take good notes because her tests are based off of them. I never used my book, she lets you purchase an older version which is like $12. Make sure you study for the midterm because that's were i screwed up and couldn't get an A.I recommend seeing her during her office hours before presenting speeches, very helpful!! Overall fu
Great person ~ tough class! Worked my butt off...got a "C". I personally feel she should be teaching at University level...that's what she expects from speech newbies! Great person though...just tough!
Best prof. i've ever had. Taken 4 of her courses! If you're looking for an easy A, don't come to Ms. Olaerts, she makes you work for it, but it is worth every second! you learn so much from her classes and she's always willing to help!take advantage of office hours and attend class or you will fall behind!
I absolutely LOVED her class! She is highly knowledgable in every topic you throw at her, easy to pay attention to because she is naturally intriguing, & her energy and intelligence are infectious. You will learn so much more in her class than just the subject material. Not an easy A, so don't be lazy.
she was a fun, fresh teacher, but when it came to what she was teaching, she made it very confusing. her tests wern't even on speeches, just on the notes. she made it very difficult to get an A on the speeches.
I have taken speech 13 and currently speech 12 with her. She is such an amazing instructor. Shes creates her own exams off her notes. Attendance is mandatory if you want to do well though she can care less if you show up or not.Her tests are mostly exmaples.Lectures are fun since she's very funny. She has me cracking up 87% of the time! lol Very fu
One of the best professors that Norco has! Makes speech really interesting and useful in every day life and other classes. She is so educated in many topics. DON'T TRY TO PROCRASTINATE! You will do very bad on your speeches. Pay very close attention to the structure of each speech and you will do great! Not easy but a GREAT teacher! TAKE HER!
She's a pretty fun teacher. Class isn't that easy but she tries to help as much as she can and is pretty clear on what she expects of you. As long as you show up, pay attention, do your work, and study you'll do alright.
She is one of the best teachers I have had at RCC. I LOVED her. Dont bother reading or buying the textbook you will only bring it to class and use it once. The exams are exactly from her lectures. Take EXCELLENT notes! Do not procrastinate on practicing speeches!
Her class was super hard. For the group projects, she'd mark you off for the most trivial details and the tests were beyond knit-picky. She went on maternity leave 3 months into the semester and at that time the highest grade in the class was a B- and there were only 2 of them. Thank god her replacement was better!
She is super helpful!! You can get a good grade if you put the effort into it. Book use is minimal but make sure to take good notes!! If you go to her office hours she will help a lot!
I recently just took another one of Ms. Olaerts again this past semester and i loved the class. She is very fun and upbeat but her class is extremely hard!!! I had to work my butt of for a B!!! Her test are based off of her notes but she is very particular so try and go in during her office time to review for her test. Good luck :)
Fails to stick to the right material. Teaches Public Speech in Interpersonal Communication Class. Lectures not consistant with text. Talks to Fast/Expects perfection. Ninja Public Speaking assignments in Interpersonal Com. class. Group Project Presentation. Don't take if not wanting Public Speech class.
Mrs. O is the most organized/helpful teacher that I've ever had. There is 1 group pres on a theory but you get the assignment with PLENTY of time! She was on point with the text; 1 chapter she used an old edition (which she announced)I personally learned so much and loved her! This is a class for REAL students not slackers!
Olaerts is no joke but very interesting. If you're lazy, don't take her class. I worked my butt off for my B. She's great at what she does but she is EXTREMELY DETAILED. Take great notes and keep up on your reading. Do ALL her assignments! The 3 and 5 point assignments add up fast. Don't slack on the group presentation!
Perhaps I'm just a good student b/c I found her class very enjoyable & really helpful in my personal life. I took excellent notes, was never absent, & read the book and I got an A. It's true that the little assignments add up fast so do take them seriously. She's been my favorite professor b/c I always looked forward to going & always left thinking
I love olaerts! I am now getting my masters in med school and I still call and ask her help. Take notes and don't be afraid to ask her questions. She is a great at teaching you what college in higher levels and the real world is like. She expects the best from students and offers the best in return I've taken all her classes! Very interesting!
She is such a cute lady! I left feeling in love with her. She is passionate about what she teachers and the material was mostly interesting. Make sure you read the book. And there is a giant project as a group at the end as a final. She is super helpful so go to her office hours.
She is a great teacher and a great person. She cares about helping her students get ahead and her energy is amazing. She always takes time to say hi if she sees you around campus and she has ample office hours to help you get ahead. I highly recommend her.
I was not looking forward to taking this course. This professor has great energy every single day, she makes you want to attend class. She is very clear on what she wants which is very helpful and if followed gets you an excellent grade. Speeches are not too difficult because of structure and two tests are simple if you take notes. Not an easy A
I took this class because I had to in order to fulfill my GE requirements. She is definitely not an easy A! Her energy is amazing and will help you if you go to her office hours. Speeches are not difficult and make sure you take VERY GOOD NOTES so you do well on her tests. ATTEND ALL CLASS DATES! And remember, that EVERY POINT COUNTS!
I absolutely loved Mrs.Olaerts. she is such a cute lady! She is one of those "happy people all the time" but it isn't annoying with her at all. She is so sweet and will help you anytime. She made class fun and would use personal experiences whichwere always funny. ALL BASED ON EXAMPLES ON TEST. READ THE BOOK. She is amazing. TAKE HER CLASS(:
This is one of the only class I don't dread coming to. Mrs. O is one of those sweet, peppie kind of person, and I usually get annoyed by cheery people like that, but she is just so loveable and knows when to be serious and when to be fun. She's very clear on what she wants and how she wants it, so pay attention. Super organized and fun overall.
Great teacher with enthusiasm for her subject. Her test are difficult, and she is a tough grader. However when you get a good grade, it feels earned. Very helpful and organized. Willing to meet before/after class, and by email. Even though you don't need the book, I felt that it helped. Definitely take good notes and show up consistently.
She is by far, the best interpersonal communications professor to take at Norco College but you will have to work your butt off for a good grade. A lot of assignments, they add up so dont miss any! 3 exams, and they're difficult, you would be best memorizing the notes. Very friendly professor, but I was so relieved once the semester ended.
Please take this negative review seriously. Olaerts is not a real teacher, nor does she understand communication apart from a textbook. She's the kind of person who became a teacher to have a decent job. She does not value creativity in the slightest. If you deviate from her speech rubric, she will punish you, even if your speech is awesome.
I loved Mrs. Olaerts! I would definitely take her again. You do need to work your butt off though, especially with the tests. Test questions are based completely on examples, therefore you must really understand the material and come up with examples that tie back in with it. I never read the book and still passed with a B.
By far the best online teacher I've ever had. I wouldn't say the class was easy as it does require a lot of time on your part to study but she gives amazing feedback and is very clear about what you can do to improve your work. She responds to questions quickly and is very helpful if you ask for help.
Amazing instructor I would definitely take again, she brings a lot of energy to the classroom is very passionate about her job and always willing to help students in need or who seek her help. Best of the best!
Very tough professor, makes you hate communication. If you do not mind a hard and heavy work load, take her. If you are looking for something easy, keep looking. She is the nicest lady, but when it comes to grading, she is very tough. Good luck.
Plenty of speeches coming your way and requires really deep research done... Not very flexible with speech dates though, she suggests you ask other professors to arrange their test dates rather than her give you the next speech date available..
Professor Olaerts made public speaking such an interesting class. She gave us all the necessary tools to succeed. Attend class, listen carefully, and take really good notes. On the first day, I was wondering what I got myself into, but looking back, I am so glad I took on the challenge. My public speaking abilities have soared with this professor
This professor gives great feedback, but you do have to WORK for your grade. On average either a discussion post or paper once a week in the online class, worth 10-15 points, but the content is required to substantive! Make sure you do ALL of the reading, tests really question your knowledge of the subject matter.
COM 12 Online Took this during winter session. You need to read and understand the material. You need to know the material. Test are somewhat situational so you need to know the terms. Use of study guides and outlines. You need to work for your grade. Gives good feedback and grades moderately hard.
This class was challenging be ready to read read and read! the tests are difficult, so make sure you understand the chapters to its core. Don't try to wing the class without buying the book. Be ready to learn, and get your money's worth. She is definitely a great teacher and is making sure she's doing her part by teaching.
A great professor! Make sure to copy every single word on her lecture slides because even a statistic may appear on an exam. If you want to pass you need to put the effort in your speeches and especially the group project!
Least flexible professor ever! It seems as though she believes that her class is your only one and should be ur priority! You are tell her that you may not be able to show up for a speech and ask her to give you a different date she will not budge and will ask you to ask your other professors to move their test dates instead! #dropped
Great professor! She is a tough grader, but she will do her best to make sure you do good. She is an honors professor and I believe she treats her regular classes as if they were one to. Practice and go over the textbook for exams.
Amazing Professor! Would definitely take another class with her. She is straight forward in what she expects from her students. The class is definitely intimidating but you definitely leave with better public speaking skills. Just stay on top of your work, pay attention, and show up to class.
Tests are difficult & the speeches were nerve racking!
Very helpful. Course is very do-able if you really work hard to earn your grade. Her strong feedback allowed my success in this course. Four speeches with two group projects. One midterm and one final. Do read the textbook for the tests because very specific information is on tests. This course will definitely help you with several others courses.
Sooo.... I took this Com class thinking it would be one of the easier classes in my course load. Yeah, no. I had to work sooooo hard. Professor Oalerts is honestly one of the most challenging Professors I've ever had, but I am grateful for it. Her feedback and expectations will prepare the student for what's to come at a 4 year university.
This teacher makes you hate comm. If you want to fail or pass with C take her. NOT Supportive, responds her email after 3 days, exams are from her lecture and her examples not from book, lectures are confusing mixing every subject in her examples and expect 100% . load of work an Homework, doesn't meet you in her office. dumps every thing on you..
Trust me, if you take only one class then take her, if you have other classes too to focus then please take this msg serious and DONT take her class. You will fail!!! you will be expected to have same knowledge as she does..... NOT helpfull, flexible teacher.
she is cute, but her teaching style is the worse. the most difficult teacher I have ever seen. not flexible, not supportive, not kind, not easy, no care, be ready to get c or fail!
I really liked mrs olaerts, she's kind of a tough grader but she gives good feedback. you HAVE to read the book and honestly if you do the work, you will pass. the class itself is not that hard, just a lot of reading and a big project at the end. she really knows what shes doing and can give endless examples of the lecture material,
She has a really nice personality, but her class itself is too overwhelming. Its only worth a total of 270 points and her test score average is about 60%. SO if you bomb 2/3 tests, might as well drop the class. She told us that the class transfers to UCLA so she will teach it as... which is very overwhelming and not necessary at all.
Knows her stuff very well, but she lectures VERY fast to the point where it is not possible to both listen and write, so you better be able to listen and write fast at the same time. Her tests are out of this world hard. Make sure you READ THE BOOK and write down the examples she gives. There is a group project OR you can write the 8 page paper.
I really liked Professor Olaerts as a person but not really as a professor. Shes very intelligent and explains the material very well but reeeaaallly makes you work for your grade. I worked my butt off in this class and I still got just a B. I enjoyed her lectures but she grades way too hard on any assignments.
she expect you to have same level of knowledge as herself. never available for students. very very though grader. and very unfair. I have passed my eng1A and 1B wih A. but I got a c in her class.
Professor Olaerts is AMAZING! She has so much energy and makes her lectures fun and interesting! Her passion for communications is clear amd reflects in her teaching. She does however grade very tough. I have taken a few of her classes and received a B each time, and I am a straight A student. I prefer her classes though because she is that great!
hardest class I've EVER HAD! I have straight A's and this was the only C on my transcript. Exams are all examples and the answers are so similar. Pay attention to her examples in lecture. NO STUDY GUIDES. She doesn't respond to email if it's not her office hours. only a few points extra credit. Grading is SO tough. give her exactly what she asks.
Olaerts is the nicest lady; she really seems to know what shes talking about. But she is very inaccessible outside of class and vague on her criteria for projects. If you fail the first exam I would recommend that you drop; its not worth the stress to try and get your grade up. I am a 4.0 student; this was my hardest class.
Olaerts is a very tough grader. Had her for public speaking. You can memorize your whole speech, no stutters but somehow youll get an 80% on it. Its her way or no way. If you dont show up to class shes rude about when you ask for papers. Midterm/Final HARD. Recommend a more lenient professor for public speaking
She is great at communication If you need help you just have to ask and she will help. She is a tough grader but she doesnt leave you in the blue she tells you exactly what she wants and always teaches. Great Professor and I recommend her if youre ready to work. If you can do her class and get a B on every speech youll succeed in her class.
Shes very nice, but a bad professor. Never answers emails when you need clarification and is a very tough grader.
If you are just trying to fill a requirement I would not recommend this class. You go in being told that most will not pass and that tests will be difficult. Very lecture heavy. She was not supportive during my presentation and that didnt make me feel good AT ALL. Out of all my classes at Norco this class was the least enjoyable.
Prof O was great! She always answered my emails right away and was very helpful. I really liked the writing assignments. You definitely need your textbook, you have to cite a lot from it so make sure you get the book. I learned a lot about myself in this class
I enrolled in her class for spring 2022 and she is super strict. No late work at all! 50 question exam within 55 mintues. Exam wasn't specified for which chapters it will include. Super tough grader when it comes to essays. Most of the homework is based on definitions. I recommend Prof Kristopher Acevedo.
Online class was half semester; we had more homework. Was all asynch, no lectures. Lots of quizzes with answers ripped from textbook (probably one per chapter) so take good notes. No retakes on quizzes or tests. She's very strict on citing in papers and discussion posts, but grading was very clear.
No retakes on quizzes or tests. Very strict on citing in papers and discussion posts, but grading is clear. No book=fail. Make sure to revisit her syllabus to stay on top of things. If you do everything posted, you should be fine.
This class of difficult. She is very tough when it comes to grading. Since I took the online course, you don't have a grade that other professors start you off with. You have to work hard. I don't recommend her class.
Doesn't allow retakes or extensions on assignments. She assigns tiny quizzes weekly which doesn't seem much, but were actually very difficult and can impact your grade a bit much :/ She also won't give you full points unless if you do the assignments her way. I've done exactly what she asked for discussion assignments and I still lost points.
Professor O knows her you know what. She has clear expectations but will help anyone anytime. Her lectures really brings everyine in. i appreciate how she alwasy wants to here from us. Get ready to learn about APA too
For anyone in the military, I highly recommend Professor Olaerts. Ive had to manage school and my drill training and she has always been very accommodating. I have to do this for all of my classes this semester, but Professor Olaerts always ends with "thank you for your service" which means a lot to me. No other professor has done that.
I really enjoyed taking this class. She explains everything perfectly in the weekly videos. She also provides another lecture video to further explain the weeks topic.
Olaerts is great at lecturing, but a hard grader. I've taken this class 2 times, and got a D both times. The problem is that I'm terrible at time management, and the exams are worth soooo much. They're only open for a 3 day-window which completely throws off my sense of time. I missed 1 exam each time, and got a D, despite doing everything else.
I was scared to take Prof Os class cus there were many comments about how hard she is. To me it was ez! I think it comes down to if ur organized or not. She's very clear with her expectations. Her class was accelerated so u need to stay on top of things. butttttt if u do its an ez pass. she responds back quickly so if u have questions jus email her
Tough but fair grading. Lots of weekly quizzes that can impact your grade. Try using unstuck ai alongside the textbook to prepare. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
Pros: NO LOCKDOWN BROWSER, NO PROCTOR. 1 essay Ez 5 page. 1 assignment, long discussion or ez quizzes. 2 test I believe were easy. Cons: Wants alot of textbook citations that takes a while but fun class. Take this professor its an easy pass or A if you actually try and not copy and paste AI like everyone in the discussions hahaha, what do you expec
so rude and doesn't respond to emails! emailed her 5 times and she responded to none of them! my friend emailed her once and she replied right away. Wouldn't take her again.
