She is an awesome lecturer but he tests are hard and she requires 4 "Position Papers" on govt topic where we state our opinions without using I or Me. She is extremely strict on what TIME your papers are turned in. Have to use APA style format for all 4 papers. A 68 on a test is good for her class, yet she does not curve?
I find her lectures and powerpoints to be inconsistent with her tests. Lack of preparation for the lesson is obvious when she lectures.

She's a handful, but a great teacher. Extremely intense so people drop like flies. The 4 position papers are very important for a good grade. Each paper is 10 percent of your grade and they're not exactly easy. They're the hardest part of the class by far. Tests are split between multiple choice & 2 big essays. Good notes & attendance are required.
She is hard her test are super hard and her noted dont help worth squat on the test. She grades like a militant. I dont reccomend her at all.
I took her US Govt. Very hard test are impossible to pass. She is a hard grader. Dont take her!
She likes to challenge her students. If you are looking for an easy A do not take her class. She doesn't care about attendance, but if you do not show up your exam grades will suck. Her exams are all definitions, short answer, and essay. Exams do come from her lectures, which do cover all the material. She is a great teacher but is more harder.
This teacher is hard but if you show up to class and study it is easier to pass - she makes you work for your grade. She does talk fast but I go to her office hours and she goes over what I missed. She also gives extra credit if you don't do well on an exam and drops you lowest test grade. Her lectures are usually interesting, not boring.
I took this class in a 5 week course and would not recommend it to anyone taking any other class or working. There are 4 essays and 4 exams(in 5 weeks) that are graded very harshly for length, sources, grammar, and content (probably in that order). Studying for the exams and researching for the papers will consume ALL of your time. Take the 16 week
I just want to say... I don't recommend her at all.. EXTREMELY HARD.
Professora Rivera, has the hardest test ever, however, she will teach you so much that you think you already know but you dont. She is one of the BEST TEACHERS i have ever had. Although i didnt receive the grade i wanted, i understood that it was my fault and not hers, i remember everything though from her class, everything, she's there to help if y
This professor is sassy, but to the point. She makes class interesting and if you go you will have everything you need for the tests-you barely need the book! To get an A you definitely have to study and do all the "position papers" but she drops 1 test and 1 paper at the end so she gives you a chance to understand her grading system!
First thing is first. A very tough class. That being said, I suggest taking US history with Professor Rivera if you are interested in actually learning and being engaged in class. The tests are especially difficult but if you can succeed on the essays then you should be fine.
I took her for 2306 and then came back for 2305. Even though she is tougher than a lot of professors at ACC she also keep things very interesting. She is also creative - she uses Facebook for extra credit by posting current events which really helped if you needed it. If you want easy, don't take her.
If you want a professor that will teach you like she would a 4 university student - take her! Like some of the other posts said she has you do 4 exams and 4 papers, but you can drop your lowest grade of each. She talks fast though and gives a lot of notes. Even though I never went I heard that if you do a study group she will go.
She has an attitude and expected us to know the information as she did. I've had better professors.
AMAZING TEACHER! She made me passionate about government. If you really want to get a wonderful education, take her govt classes. She teaches both. 4 tests 4 paper and you drop each lowest grade, her tests are HARD but if you attend class you will pass and learn a whole lot!!
This teacher was amazing! Usually gov can be very dull and boring but she makes it so interesting. If you want an easy teacher she is definitely not that. She teaches as St. Ed's and UT and gives the exact same test and papers. But you will definitely learn something. As for her test, if you listen to what she says and take notes you pass.
She is an interesting techer and loves what she does but the class is really hard:/
She is an awesome teacher. I absolutely hate gov but she made it really interesting. BUT if you want an easy A this is NOT your class. She talks from start to finish. Your test will be over everything she talked about and nothing more. They are very hard though. And there is no review. Papers are difficult as well. But I love this class!
Her classes are interesting and easy to attend she keeps it fun and welcomes all questions, if you have little study time or a heavy class load do not take her, her exams are beastly and her papers difficult but she is a lot of fun.
Got a 40 on my first test. Most of the class failed. Does not provide guidelines for test. Everything is on the table. Does not return research paper or grades in a timely manner. Not available during office hours. Test are super hard. Wasted money and time in taking this class.
I had this professor for Spring 2012 and I had to because of the way she was teaching her class. You're not allowed to bring a recorder and on top she is a very fast speaker which can be a problem. Her tests are extremely hard and so are her research papers. She is a hard grader and will take years to give back grades! You will have to be on top it
Best professor I've ever had. Yeah, her tests are hard and so are the research papers, but they're not impossible if you study and pay attention to her critiques and lessons. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass, but she'll make you want to be there. I highly recommend her if you want to actually learn something in college.
Extremely difficult grading. Not a fun class unless you're a poli-sci major or very passionate about government. She speaks 1000 words a minute and expects you to retain all of that information without any voice recording allowed. Do not take her. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Everything you need to know for test will be summed up in her lectures where she talks way to fast to comprehend. No text book needed save your money.. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the class for you. If you do end up taking the class i wish you the best of luck, it will be needed!
This professor needs a reality check. Her expectations are extremely high (sometimes, unreasonable), yet she can't take the time to respond to emails or get grades back in a timely manner. I am so so sorry I've taken this course with her. You have to scribble notes so quickly and get everything down because its all fair game for the test.
She doesn't fully explain exerything, and speaks extremely fast. I left the first test feeling like I already needed a Ph.D in Political Science to pass it.Tests and papers are not returned in a timely manner. If you are taking full time hours, I would not take her class in that mix, the tests and papers are very demanding.
Don't take this course if you are not a political science major. DONT DO IT!!!
I LOVED this class! She is a hard teacher but she knows her stuff! Attendence is MANDATORY, her test are complete lecture based. I thought I was gonna hate that class but walking out on the last day I had realized how much I had learned. She is hard and a hardass but you learn ALOT!
It's the end of the semester and I am so sad that I can't take professor rivera again for Texas - already took it :( She was amazing! Super smart but like some other comments mentioned doesn't take any crap. She is strict with her rules but also fair. The best thing about this class is that you ACTUALLY learn! Would recommend!
Professor Rivera is an amazing teacher, her class is hard and you have to work for your grade, but I enjoyed going to her class, you learn a lot. So sad I can't take her again....but ! deff recommend her
She REALLY needs a reality check. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS INSTRUCTOR. grades everything VERY hard. tests take way more time than one class period that you are given. She talks extremely fast, and you cant get all of the notes down that you NEED to pass the exams. 60% essay questions no test reviews. tons of research papers that are graded intense
Very knowledgeable professor but needs to slow down. She rattles of 1000 words a minute and expects you to write down everything like a court reporter. 1st week of class my hand was sore from trying to keep up. She rarely uses powerpoints so its all word of mouth. Tests are way too detailed. Absolutely NO study guide. And paper are rough. GOOD LUCK
3 tests and 3 four page essays. She gives Amazing lectures, which is great because everything on the tests is lecture based. You get to learn a lot from this class and professor . You have to work very hard to get an A in the class, but it is possible. The extra credit moves you up a letter grade. This class is worth taking! Awesome Professor

The papers are definitely easy-A's. The tests are multiple choice and essay, but not hard if you paid attention and took decent notes. She will challenge you on your political decision regardless of which party you align yourself with. Also a mention that the book for this class is online and free. She will answer any questions you have. Awesome!
Great Professor, she may seem intense and in your face on certain issues but some issues should be intense in your face. Take good notes and SI tutoring helped alot. I recomend taking a class from her.
Prof Rivera gives interesting lectures and discussions are thought provoking. However she has been 15+ mins late to class, cancelled class only 30 mins before it begins, and informed us about room changes only 30 mins prior (and no note on door!). She is a hard ass but doesn't respect students' time. She's also a slow grader.
She is a great tutor. She is a angle
Prepare to take good notes and study hard. Most of the grade is tests, which are primarily essay-based. Also, you can drop your lowest test. She offers extra credit, which can raise you a letter grade. She's a very passionate and intelligent professor, and made something I initially had no interest in, fascinating! Also, no hwtextbook reading!
Rivera doesn't understand that this is an intro class. She teaches like she were teaching a major Political Science class. There were 40 students in the class when it started and by the end of the semester there were only 5 students that courageously stayed... all got an "F". She thinks she is rich, smart and superior to all and degrades people.
two 6 page double spaced papers, amazing lectures, and would take again! LOVE HER!!!
Professor Rivera cares immensely about her students learning. She doesn't dumb down anything but instead insists you rise to the challenge. She wants you to succeed but will not just give you a passing grade. If you are not ready to try do not take this class. BUT, if you would like to have your mind blown on a regular basis TAKE THIS CLASS!
She is awesome! I love her lectures but I do think her grading are tough!
I took her TX GOV class in the summer, 6 weeks. For a class that most students are trying to get out of the way, Rivera expects too much. I would have taken this class at my university if I had known how difficult Rivera's class was. You have to know EVERYTHING for her exams. Studying required at least three days of solid 4 hours of work.
There are a lot of cry babies posting here. Took her for the first my first time being back in 10 yrs - what I learned is that there are a lot of lazy students who good grades but not do the work. It's not that hard. Three tests, you can drop your lowest one, two 5 pg research papers, extra credit, and easy course participation. Loved the class.
For this class you must be an extremely good note-taker! I walked away with approx 90 pages of notes for each session... And there were 3 sessions! Exams are essay style and challenging! covering about 15% of notes. Test results are slow! She's Passionate about the subject but a Potty Mouth also! Govt 2305 Class feels More like "Political Science"
This professor is good at communicating and helping students understand the how government works with real examples. I really enjoyed her lectures. I haven't taken a college course in years and she was my first class back and I am so glad I took her. Her passion is evident, her lectures are always interesting, and she cares about helping students.
If you can pass her class you can pass any lecture class in college! The main thing is copying down everything she says. Everything she says is what you will need to know for the test. Read your notes over and over until 100% memorized. She gives only two essays and 4 tests. She is a fast talker so just ask her to repeat anything you miss.
Lectures are good but frequently go off topic, and very little of the test material is actually covered in class, so you are better off just reading the textbook. If you are a student who thrives with accommodations, do not take her as she will do whatever she can to deny them. In addition, she is overly opinionated & rude to anyone who disagrees.
Her class is super duper hard. She explains the material well, but she talks super fast in lecture and expect you to keep up with her when writing down notes. Her exams are essay based and she makes it really hard. She also requires two research paper, which I think is way too much. I wouldn't recommend taking her for Government.
I have took this class last semester and it was hard taking notes and asking questions is the best way to pass. Also, make sure to use the after hours if you have problems. Use your free time wisely and you will pass no problem. I failed the first two test and still past with a B, simply don't give up cause we all know school is just a test.
If you show up, pay attention and participate- you now college-like stuff, you'll do just fine. She's very accessible-late office hours and tutors at the learning lab. She'll help with papers, and go over exams if you ask. I wish all professors treated education like Professor Rivera does. Would highly recommend.
Not your average professor, but she's great! Very passionate and knows lots of information. Be attentive (because she talks really fast) and prepared for class discussions.
I took this class during summer, 3 tests and 2 research papers. She truly cares about her students and gives amazing lectures, I enjoyed coming to class. The tests are 15 multiple choice, 5 short answers and 2 essay based. I missed one test due to sickness and gave me a 0. She's amazing but her class is truly difficult. A lot of us struggled.
I took her during the summer session. Be prepared to note really fast as she is a fast-speaker. But she is available during the office hours if you require her help. 2 research papers, 3 exams and extra credit opportunities. To ace the tests memorize her notes fully, no need of textbooks. Slow grader though. Class participation needed.
Professor Rivera is very clear about what is expected and she is serious about education. Time flies because her lectures are interesting. If you need help go see her during office hours and she will totally help you. The only complaint I have is she did not get our scores for exams or research paper grades back in a timely manner.
Despite what rumors say about professor Rivera, she's truly one of the best professors ACC could've gotten their hands on. She's passionate about the subject she teaches and beckons you to open you views and think about your preconceptions of everything in government. She loves her students and expects no less than what an Ivy League would expect.
She's a very good professor, don't get me wrong. She's passionate about this subject, but be ready to write a lot of notes. She talks really fast, and excepts you to get it all down. The test are half multiple choice and other free write. She requires two essays, and takes her time to get back to you on the grades.
I normally enjoy government classes, but not this one. Rivera is very knowledgeable on the subject, yet doesn't seem to care whether or not her students are actually learning. She talks extremely fast and will not slow down for anyone. Also, the tests are extremely hard. SHE DOES NOT GIVE A STUDY GUIDE! If you miss just one day you might not pass.
Shes a fantastic professor in the sense that you will get everything you need to know about TX government that you possibly can in a semester. Her tests are tough, youll definitely need study partners to help go over what she emphasizes in class. She keeps you woke. Honestly, I wish I could take the class again for informations sake.
ADORE Professor Rivera. Amazing lectures. If u want a good grade, u REALLY need to put in the work. I managed a B juggling 2 jobs & 4 classes. 3 exams composed of multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions. She drops your lowest exam score. 2 five-page research papers. She may offer extra credit. Dont miss class & take good notes!
She assigned a 5 page paper with unclear questions/thesis. Her lectures are all over the place and it's hard to follow along
Great teacher, but I was not prepared for this class what so ever. The tests are difficult and the lectures are heavy. The teacher is quite intelligent, and if government is something you love, then I would recommend this class. But for me, this class was the hardest class I have ever taken.
She is a great professor. 2 Research Papers, 3 test grades with multiple choice and open ended question. Be ready to take a lot of notes.
She gives 3 tests and 2 papers. Showing up is basically your grade, because the lectures are heavy in material, and missing 1 day could result in having a test score possible of 100, to possible of 65 just because theres so much connection between them. But, showing up means youll get you questions answered properly and in detail.
Took her class during the summer. Took lots of notes. Two papers and three tests.
A lot of people like her, a lot of people don't. It really depends on how you learn. Note that she never passes back any work, including the tests, so how she grades is a mystery until she uploads final grades.
Great professor but you don't know what the test will be about get ready to take a lot of notes.(fast writer) interesting class discussions, she is very knowledgeable and she can be tough. Not a class where you can slack off
If you really want to learn about how government works, this class is THE class to take. Each lecture is filled with all types of ways to remember the content (shes smart and sets up her lesson plans perfectly). If you miss one class, since there is no textbook, you miss a good percent of the tests. She gives information to last forever.
She is great although her class is extremely hard it is also super interesting if you are into government I would completely recommend it. she talks very fast and sometimes it might be hard to follow her lectures but I really enjoyed the class.
She is an amazing professor! 10/10 would recommend
Professor Rivera is VERY knowledgeable. However, her style of teaching isn't concrete... sometimes it is a lecture aided by powerpoint (preferable), while MOST others are "off-the-cuff" and take wild tangents. Her delivery is very fast and the inaccessibility to review a powerpoint after classes to supplement the notes you missed makes it tough
Professor Rivera knows a lot and asks if we have questions every class and answers them the next day. We had to write every day in class and attendance every day matters to her. The biggest disappointment was her not passing back any grades ever. It is now the end of the semester and no one in the class knows their grades.
She's can be a real serious and seem a bit scary at first because she's a no joke professor. Her classes consist of 3 tests (she drops the lowest one at the end of the semester) and 2 research papers plus participation. I would only take her class if your willing to work for your grade. But she will answer any questions you have and help you.
Don't take her if you're just in it for a gov credit. This class took up much more of my time than I anticipated because the exams are lengthy and require memorizing everything in detail. The effort to get even a B was not worth it for a class I don't care about.
Didnt like her or her teaching style, good luck if you take her
She's amazing. I love going to her class. She requires a book but you'll almost never use it the tests are 100% from lectures. She talks really fast and you can't use a laptop in her class. In other words, be ready for your hand to fall off. You actually get to learn things from her.
This has been my favorite professor so far. Extra credit available. People who failed this class stayed through the semester just to attend lecture, seriously. Love her or hate her. She's fair and she makes you work for it. The lectures are exciting and engaging. Extremely good at delivering her points and making the material animated.
This professor did get straight to the point. She was a good professor to have fun with but during the start of the semester she was kinda mean to the class. There were two major essays that are 40% of the grade and three exams but only two count towards your grade. Don't take this class if you have alot on your plate it will only make it worse
Had to take online, forcing your students to use a system like Voice Thread is ridiculous. If you arent comfortable with a webcam, sucks to be you. Research Papers are too difficult when there is no relatable substance from class material and lectures. This teacher tends to push her own political views in these papers.
Does not submit grades till after withdraw date passed. Hardly any grades submitted even a few days before end of class.
I really loved this class! It's coming from a Student that got a D final grade. Not so memorable, however, completely worth it. Her class was so interesting, I never got bored, and she continually proved she knew what she was talking about. Respect for her, and her brain!
Professor Rivera would teach good in person instead of online. The organization of the classroom was very unorganized and certain assignments werent visible. Takes a long time to submit grades so you wont know what your grade is prior to the withdrawal date. It WILL take a while to receive feedback on something, so beware of that. Good luck.
My class was taken amid COVID-19 so that may have affected her teaching, but this was my experience. Through 10 weeks, we maybe had access to lectures and any homework, 2-3 days before due. If you sent her an email with a question, expect a week delay, if you ask for feedback on a paper or hw assignment, accept the fact she will NOT answer ever.
5 week, online summer class. She had poor communication skills, as it took the first week for her to respond to students. No grades where put in until the day grades where do, so we had no way of knowing if we where doing assignments right. Tests tested specific details in the book. Not a good asynchronous prof. Maybe she's better in person
HORRIBLE professor. She is VERY opinionated and does not accommodate students requests. Class is very fast paste and the exams are NOTHING like the info we go over in class. Shes very tough on grading and NEVER responds to emails. Told a student that they were getting defensive and in her feels bc they asked her to explain the content better.
Passionate! Her lectures are awesome and very interesting. teaches info in a relatable fasion. Two research papers, had 8 weeks 4 each. Is responsive if you reach out to her. Dont be lazy and blame her for your lack of note taking, like a student did in class. No review but take notes and you good. Minute papers cool. I feel ready for university
First time online, tough. Professor Rivera is unique, very interesting lectures, smart. Her tests are no joke and her lectures are intense. two required papers, only 4 pages, not too bad. I enjoy the animation she brings to her lectures, which keeps me interested. Take good notes, need to, I scored a 73 on first exam. Never liked govt until now..
Tough cookie! Awesome lectures, knows her stuff. Most demanding class, dont know if Im passing. Enjoy watching lectures, but must take notes. Exams are written mostly, so need to study. Group studying helped me due to sharing notes, 1st test. Shes awesome and passionate and doesnt hand out grades. Dont be lazy take good notes and good luck!
For a comm. college, felt like I was attending Law School. MUST LOVE POLITICS. Very knowledgeable, but extremely rude and has a "know-it-all" attitude. Very time consuming class, takes away from my major classes, for fear of failing. Tests are mainly essays and uses Lockdown Browser for tests. She's all over the place with lectures.
I would advise you to not take this class unless you are already well versed in politics. I didnt like the no study guides for exams, "you should just know it" attitude. The Exams were killer, and she would test you on very specific material from hundreds of pages of readings, never said in lectures or mini lectures. She takes time to grade.
Do not take this class if you are trying to learn something. the lectures never had content for the tests, and every week there was an essay-like assignment due, which was sometimes posted later in the week. she also wouldnt grade things until at least 4+ weeks after its turned in. Overall challenging class I would not recommend
Prof Rivera has possibly been the most real and raw professor I have ever had. And Im honestly it is a PRIVILEGE to be taught by someone so passionate and educated on the subject. If you dont know whats going on outside of lecture it is YOUR responsibility to study and educate yourself further because YOU ARE AN ADULT. Dont waste HER time <3
You would be mental to take her class. Her expectations are that of a person who thinks this class is the end all be all of your education and career. 10+ pages of notes for 1 exam that requires complete memorization. She takes pride in being tough, sassy, and head strong, which does not make for a good learning exp. Don't even think about it.
Do not take this class if you want an easy A. She takes attendance and class work very seriously. I enjoyed her because she got me interested in things and taught me stuff I remember to this day. A good class to take if you want to learn and be challenged. Dont take this class if you just want the credit. Also shes hilarious and very relatable.
NOT WORTH IT. Exams were extremely hard and she didn't grade ANYTHING. We had four grades in the grade book after doing many assignments. Meaning, we did not know our grades. She then sent out an email the last week of class saying "she was doing us a favor" by not grading the rest of the assignments because she was LAZY.
Shes really funny and down to earth. I think shes a really great professor but her lectures are really fast paced and she doesnt ever go over anything twice. She will also berate you in class if you answer a question wrong or are doing something off topic. Shes great but not for everyone.
She has 3 exams. I was ill-prepared for the first one, so this was the first exam I ever failed. The first research paper was due 10/15 and I still have not received it back (11/22). The final drop date is 11/18; she did not return any valuable assignment grades before then. Regardless, her teaching style is very clear and organized, praising Q's.
Professor Rivera is overall a great professor. Her lectures are very clear and organized. However, she takes forever to grade. I haven't gotten back a single major grade and the semester is almost over. If you don't study for the tests you probably won't pass. She only gives 2 papers and 3 tests, so there isn't much room for error.
No study guide on exams. but instead random essay questions over vast amount of lecture material that count for 50+ % of every exam score. No understanding of outside circumstances even after a hospital visit wouldnt accept late work by even 1 day. takes forever to grade so you never know where you. very intelligent professor but good luck passing
Professor Rivera is a truly amazing professor. Her class lectures are interesting, engaging, funny, and will make you really think. the whole class lectures but I think it works great. Two small papers and three exams. This class is a challenge but if you make the effort you can walk out with so much knowledge you can use for the rest of your life.
Prof Rivera was amazing. She is hilarious and is super kind. If you want to pass, you have to come to class, you have to pay attention, and you have to take good notes. Tests are only hard if you didn't study for them. She says the textbook is required but I never used it. She is always up for a debate and is great at answering questions.
Yes! She is a tough teacher! But that's what makes her amazing! She is very clear with what she expects from you and if you take notes in class it shouldn't be difficult to succeed. She's HILARIOUS and I would take her class again in a heartbeat. Tough material but she answers anonymous questions every class so don't be afraid to ask questions.
Professor Rivera is hands down the best professor I have ever had. If you are looking for an easy way to get a gov. credit this class is not for you. She is a professor you will not forget and you will come out with so much knowledge about both state and fed government. Study groups are the way to go and start research for papers asap.
Anaka Rivera is condescending to students and lies to the class and individuals harming their potential to succeed in class. She has repeatedly lied about grading assignments. Two days before the end of class and after deadline to withdraw she still hasn't put a single grade in. I wouldn't recommend even if she's the only option you have.
Great teacher definitely has a unique way of teaching but it works. Lots of lectures. If you don't try you won't pass. She makes the class interesting and may seem very strict(which she is) but she does care about her students. Favorite class I took at ACC.
Professor Rivera knows her stuff! Straight forward and will tell you how it is. Hands down my favorite professor! You have 2 Research papers and 3 Exams, as long as you take notes on how she explains it...you'll pass. Attendance is mandatory too.
I encounters a lot of pleasant experiences with professors at ACC, where they genuinely want to help each student so to be successful, and Anaka Rivera is defiantly NOT one of those. I do not recommend taking her course unless you are desperate for the credit and there is no one else to pick from.
Not a hard class reading is expected for a gov. class so those things are okay. Consists of 3 tests, 2 papers, and homework. Biggest issue-we are 1 wk from end of class & nothing has been graded. 2 tests & 1 paper submitted w/ another test & paper due & NO feedback on anything. How do we know where to improve if we don't know how we've done so far
I took an 8 week course which had 2 papers, 3 exams, and weekly homework. Main issue is she did not grade a single thing until the semester was over and grades were do for transcripts. I had technical issues with an exam which I emailed her about and I never received a response and she put in a failing grade for an exam I never got to complete.
She does not respond to emails. She did not grade anything until the day grades were due Her syllabus was wrong the entire session. She had vague and overly wordy directions that made little sense and had grammatical errors. Unprofessional as she is unable to respond to emails or grade tests and papers in a timely manner.
During the first week of class, orientation quiz and hw weren't working for the entire class. Took her a few days to respond to my email with 'consider it completed'. Suddenly I'm withdrawn from the class for reason "Other". When I asked, she said it was because I hadn't completed the orientation. I asked to be added back, and she never responded.
She sent out an announcement stating there would be 70 multiple choice questions and 1 essay question. She lied the exam contained around 11 or so written questions. She also only gives 1 and a half hours to complete that. She just hands out grades with zero feedback. Although, I had an easier time contacting her, but I might be an outlier here.
This professor never updated any grades during the entire summer session. The only reason why I have a high A right now is that she never graded any of the exams or research papers at all. It is the summer session's final week, and I have no idea how well I am doing in her class. She can also get angry when talking about politics
She messed up my disability accommodations on every single exam. I am honestly wondering if I am going to have pursue legal action against the school with how severe this was. Don't take her, she doesn't respond in a timely manner, and if you're really unlucky, she might cause you a whole legal issue.
She still hasn't removed a failed exam. After she even told the class it was her fault. The stress she caused was completely avoidable. Her lectures are unbearable. Final grades still haven't been updated correctly. I'm honestly at a loss for words on how she's even considered a professor. Jarring and unpleasant personality. The list is endless.
I have never encountered a professor that has preyed on their students' downfall as much as Prof Rivera. Entirely refused to grade my essay worth 15% of the grade because it was less than half a page too short. Included a ":(" in the message as well which honestly, felt more disrespectful than the 0. Lectures were nearly impossible to follow too.
1st, the wrong book at the bookstore and on the syllabus. The book has an online quiz that switches wording to make it difficult to find answers. Text is timed with random essay questions in the middle of multiple choices-- no going back to change answers. Refuses to answer on blackboard email. Keep the "A," stay away. The textbook was a good read!
I took a summer asynchronous course that consisted of 3 exams(although one didn't count because she messed up the exam format) and two research papers. It was honestly ok, the only thing I would say is that she takes forever to grade the assignments so I didn't know if I was doing good or bad in her class.
I hate to say that it was her, but it was mostly the online testing. It was a great book with a terrible test that tried to mirror Jeopardy. The test changed words so that you could not search the answer, easily. Set up for failure, not for success. No pre-test preparation for the 72 question test about 3-5 chapters. It's her lack of help abt test.
Awesome
This insturcor is filling in for another instructor in this class and can't seem to keep up with the work. She has also not asked for assitance to het the grading done. With 9 weeks into the sesssion, I have 6 papers that have not been graded. I feel that ACC has not done a good job of getting a person to substitue teach this class.
I see her as a representation of the education system's flaws. While she may excel in some areas, teaching, mentoring, and guiding students aren't her strengths. I hope ACC evaluates its professors more carefully and removes those who are unfit for the role, like Anika Rivera.
I believe Professor Rivera means well, but literally every paper was left with no grade all the way up until it was time for grades to be submitted. The only thing that was actually graded on time were the automated grades from Vimeo submissions. It was super frustrating not knowing where you were academically in her class.
She gave 71 question tests, 70 questions were 1 point, and the last question was an "essay" worth the remaining 30 points which seemed a bit unfair. The questions were also changed in a way that the answers couldn't be searched. Taking notes on her Vimeo lectures was somewhat helpful. She also never put in grades until the semester was over.
First, the bookstore has a book for her class, which I bought, and when we started the semester, she informed us of the specific book she wanted. The textbook was really good though. Then, she would take forever to grade assignments so you never know how you did before doing the next one. Her tests had awful timing, structure, and point allocations
If you're looking for a government class that is an easy A, this is not the course for you. Professor Rivera is well-spoken and her lectures are very engaging. Notes are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT because the topics will not be written out for you. All of that aside, I loved both the class and Professor Rivera and I learned so much in this class.
Never experienced a professor who was so harsh and plainly rude. The amount of work expected in this basic pre requisite class is insane.
HARD! I stressed so much bc of how excessive this class was. I do not recommend this teacher if you want something more self paced.
This is the first rating for a professor on Rate My Professor I have ever done and probably will ever do. That should be warning enough to NOT take any course by Anaka Rivera. She is the most cold and unsympathetic professor I have ever had. Long story short, she changed the format of her exams mid-semester, I couldnt take exam 2, and she failed me
Um... she does not put all the grades in and ended up only putting in one assignment total for me for the entire semester. I got lucky it was a paper because I am a strong writer but I wouldn't want to take that chance again. Learned a lot from lectures though
EXTREAMLY AND LONG COURSE 14 CHAPTERS AND IN EACH A LITERALLY quiz in each of 20 questions but that unless you get 100 score you have to keep re taking plus the actual 3 exams and 2 5000 word essays Do not take this course is absurd
The majority of essays and tests submitted will not be graded until after the end of the semester. After leaving students clueless on how they're progressing, she provides zero feedback upon finally grading. I'm disappointed with ACC for allowing this.
It was really hard course and the test were super hard. 2 really long research papers due.
This is a very difficult class, not even because the information is difficult but the professor is heavily reliant on you reading you emails and you have to schedule your exams, chapters every week are due and also 5+ page papers. I was always frustrated and felt like I really never knew when anything was due because nothing was on blackboard.
The class was challenging, with a demanding workload and unstable grading policies. But the textbook was helpful, and engaging with Unstuck study for study prep made a difference. Overall, a tough but worthwhile experience.
Would delete the test preps because she didn't want the kids who didn't do it to have a chance to do it late. It made it so you couldn't study either though
Im not even done with her class but this has to but the worst class I have ever taken. Not only are her tests horrible long but she takes her sweet time grading. This is my first ever review on a professor, so the fact that I took time out of my day to write this should tell you enough. SAVE YOURSELF DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Should of read reviews before taking. Tests are pretty long. If you read the chapters you'll at least be able to do well on them. My biggest problem is the time it takes for them to grade. Our first exam and paper wasn't graded until April 23rd when the class started in February. Which is also the last week to drop the class.
Extremely biased. Research papers are definitely designed for you to back up her beliefs on a topic rather than present your own. Still has not submitted grades for first essay that was due in March and the semester is almost over, with the 2nd papers due in less than a week. Pass/fail rides on the paper she hasn't graded due over 2 mths ago.
Not sure how a professor can hold off on submitting grades until after the semester is over. Discussion board answers are submitted in video format, which is just generally annoying. Tests are extremely long, and there is no way to keep up with your grade, as she does not grade in a timely fashion. Take ANY other gov class to avoid her.
Took this course online. Weekly assignments are easy worth 25%; 3 exams and 2 papers are difficult and are worth 75% of your grade. Exams include essays and are live-proctored. Research papers are long with strict grading. No extra credit or late work. Grading is super slow and many still need to be graded late in the semester. Wouldn't recommend.
Interesting lectures but brutal class. No study guides, 3 proctored exams w/ very specific questions and 1 incredibly difficult essay question. 2 research papers, no excused absences, no late work, no extra credit. Slow grading + replies. Weekly work is easy, but tests WILL humble you. Wouldn't recommend this class unless you like pain.
There's a lot of work. The research papers are long, and you can't procrastinate on them. The tests are long with very specific questions, and the fact that 1 essay question is worth 30 points of your test grade is appalling. She provides no study guides and closes the quizzes so you can't study with those. I'll be lucky to get a B at this point...
This is honestly one of the most difficult professors. She will give you no mercy even if you're dying. No extensions, no late work, no accommodations whatsoever even if you try to communicate. Save your time and energy, do not take her as a professor.
just simply do not waste your time with this professor- she has a mindset of nobody is perfect and so that means nobody will receive an A. Keep in mind that I am a straight A student and have never had any difficulties with any professors except her.
I hope that ACC looks at this professor a second time because she doesn't take anything into consideration. No make up work, and if you didn't complete an assignment correctly she will give you a 0 for it no matter how small the mistake was. I'll would've been lucky to get a D so I had to drop. Find another professor, and you'll thank me.
i seriously don't write reviews but this one had to have been necessary because she is the most difficult professor i've ever had. DO NOT TAKE ANAKA RIVERA EVEN IF IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD
This professor, has a grading and late work policy that has no leniancy or exceptions. She is not very open to other people's difficulty of schedule as she both does not allow extensions nor doing work early, even in a class that was described to be fully asyncronous self paced. She also gave near zero feedback for where she took points off.
TBD was listed as the professor name when I registered so I was trapped. I'm pretty liberal but she is so biased in her paper prompts alone I was laughing. For the summer online class she requires two five page papers, three tests, and lots of homework. You're required to show your face and record yourself talking 1-2 a week. Not worth your time.
I just dropped Texas and local government after the first exam, the exam is so hard, I do not know where she finds so difficult questions, they never appear in the weekly assignments and quizlet, so you don't know how to prepare for the exam.
Professor Rivera had engaging lectures, but that's where the good things about this class end. This was a summer class, so everything is coming at you like a firehose. Very little communication, no way to communicate with other classmates, extremely strict on grading, slow at grading, and strict on following the arbitrary rules in the syllabus.
This teacher has no flexibility whatsoever. Do not take her classes ever if you are considering to do so. Her lectures are good, but thats the only pro against the horribly long list of cons.
Professor Rivera is a professor that you do not want. She brings no feedback, she severly lacks communication and has severe grading where she takes off points without describing where they were taken off. Education should be made to learn, not to create stress towards students, and Professor Rivera symbolizes the opposite of that ideal.
this class was probably the most challenging online class I have taken. i had an A for the entire class until the last week, where she graded stuff from the first week of class. you have about 20 quizzes that make up 5% of the grade then she grades the important stuff last and her syallbus rules she changes them everyday and never responds to help
Failed the entire class on the last day grades were able to be submitted. The advisor I spoke with stated that she is under review as there are multiple students who are disputing their final grade. Was making a 100 the entire semester
the worst class I have taken in college. by far. not even close. nothing is wrong with her as a person, but her grading is... something. the tests are structured to be 70 multiple choice questions and one essay question worth 30 points. you fail the essay portion and get 5-6 multiple choice wrong? you fail the test. oh and tests are 45% :)
Do not take her class! Many students have had similar experiences, she is very difficult. She literally sent out an email saying she would give us feedback b4 we start on our second research paper but this woman didn't grade or give me feedback which caused me to fail. She also has 70+ questions exams but only gives you ONE HOUR to complete.
Great lectures. But too much material if you're carrying a full load. Not recommended for practical knowledge or going into social work. It feels aimed at people who want to become professors in the same field. Very tough grader. Lots of instructions for how she wants things. Very intense.
Grading is horrible. The teacher has no leniency and will not make any exceptions. Do not take this professor if you have a job, kids, or any other responsibilities outside of her class. The exams are 45 percent of your grade, and you have 5-page essays. If the essay is not done 100 percent her way, she will not look at it and will give you a 0.
one of my favorite classes so far. Her lectures are very engaging and teaches things that will actually be useful in real life and to improve your self. I would highly recommend her if you want to learn to be a better and more engaged student but if you want an easy A or don't like your own beliefs being challenged the find another professor
Don't waste your time with this professor, even if you're taking an asynchronous class expect to still be on camera. No make-ups, no leniency or mercy for any student going through issues in their personal life. I resent this professor wholeheartedly, save yourself
Professor Rivera is an amazing and inspirational teacher. She is wholeheartedly compassionate and has taken great pride in knowing her subject(s). Her class can be very intimidating at first, but please trust the process. She cares for every student (contrary to other reviews), and is the funniest teacher I've had. Love you if you see this. -JP
This professor demonstrates an extreme lack of communication and transparency. Instructions are consistently unclear, emails are ignored until after deadlines, and feedback is unhelpful. Grades are misleading due to selective posting of poorly graded work, making this the worst courses I've taken.
For starters, I have emails between us and to our class stating she would do x,y,z, and never did. Didn't grade anything until after the semester ended. She hid behind her personal issues and used those as an excuse for not grading anything. Her “lectures” were YouTube clips of other people. DO NOT waste your time
