Good: She's very intelligent and knows the material. She's cheerful, and she loves class discussion. Bad: She' really picky. She refuses to use any visuals like overheads or powerpoints, and if you miss the class? You are s**t out of luck unless you know someone in the class, because you NEED the notes to do well. Overall, I'd recommend her.
I would not recommend her. Along with 2 midterms and a ridiculous research paper, she likes to throw in mandatory 'supplementary articles" every chapter that are deathly boring. Keep in mind this was only a 200 level course! Attendance is mandatory - no powerpoint or even whiteboard - get ready to write. very quickly.
Brutal.Absolutely no notes/powerpoints,very picky marker, often taking away marks for not mentioning things that were not part of the question.Overall, with her brutally slow and picky marking, overly intense exams, excessive and boring supplementary readings and a ridiculously demanding paper for a 200 level class, this is the worst prof ive ever had.
This professor is terrible..
I don't recommend her... mainly because of the same reasons mentioned below. Run away and don't look back!!!
She need to use more aids like powerpoints or notes of some kind, but overall I really enjoyed the class. She loves class discussions and monitors them really well. Attendance is mandatory but if you're not going to go to class get out of college.
she just took marks off my paper for the littlest reason. this paper would have been an 80 if marked by any other prof and she gave me a 40 for the LITTLEST reasons.
She just re-teaches what was learned in SOCI 100, with less detail and clarity. BRUTALLY slow marker, very little social skills and experience for a sociology prof, she does not understand the concept of THEORIES & tired of hearing about her endless supply of "friends"...
terrible prof. loves to hear herself talk. no use of any technology (does not use blackboard at all). overly picky, looks to take away marks. brutal research papers, random questions for marks throughout term. absolutely boring useless class. only attended in order not to miss a question. worst class ive ever had due to the professor.
One of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. She accuses 3rd and 4th year students of plagiarism with no proof, and threatens to give 0's unless you take a "mandatory" class on how to reference. Picky, likes to hear herself speak, and extremely rude to her students. Her in class questions are also a joke. No purpose.
It was the most ridiculous class i have ever taken in my life. It is a second level course you have to pass the first year in order to get into this class, asking us to re-write a textbook is ridiculous i dont know what she thinks we are. Then to accuse us of plagerism is offensive when most of us are 4th year students
I found her really condescending and rude. I was really looking forward to this class but I would have loved a different prof. I think she is too demanding and the fact that she docks marks for lateness when she herself was late is really unfair.
Ok,so she showed favourites...however overall she was well informed of her material....Did deduct marks on papers for Plagiarism ,which only 5 out of 60 did correctly :( was not clear with directions for papers...ugh...was condescending towards certain people....overall though, very smart & encouraged further learning! Young so has some**** tolear
She is a very hard marker, she is extremely hard on marking even when it's a morning class. She's not fair, stay away!
This was an awful class, I had to force myself to come to every morning. She always accused students of plagerism.. I am a third year student and did NOT plagerize, though she would like to beg differ. I strongly suggest NOT going to her class. She marked hard and ruined sociology for me. There were no tests just papers... its not an english coarse
She is not an easy grader, that said, if you read your textbook and have a brain you are going to do fine.
WORST PROF EVERRR. Just because we walked into class at 2:05, instead of 2:00 she took 10% off of our essays. Not only that, she is extremely picky at marking, and thought my own thesis was a authors and had to be cited. I would say drop her class if it is your first sociology class. Sociology 100 was supposed to good, not like a nightmare...
I would not recommend this class for first year students. She's extremely picky on papers, she accuses everyone of plagerizing. Very rude and does not explain things very well. In class questions are unless and it seems she only wants to hear her own views. No midterms just papers. Unfair favoritism with students I would never take her class again.
She was mediocre. The class was good as she based it mostly on discussion and examples, making it easy to understand the basics. She challenges students to think, which is a nice change. She does come off rather arrogant when lecturing though, and speaks quietly at times. She is a hard marker, but will help you if you ask.
Terrible prof. Like others said, I received zeros TWICE for "plagarism"...which consisted of a small error in one secondary in-text source citation. I had to take a course on proper citations and then meet with her to discuss my plagaristic ways to get my mark back. She also marked extremely hard and unfairly when she wasn't busy handing out zeros.
She knows her stuff and expects you to be willing to learn. Also, for her papers, she expects you to cite properly... know ASA or APA, and don't rush it. She is a new-ish instructor and still finding her stride. Talk with her in a reasonable tone and you will be able to come to some accomodation but if you come at her, she will hold her ground.
COMPLETELY USELESS!! run!! she thinks this is an english class. very hard marker. accuses everyone of plagiarism, i completely lost interest in sociology because of her.
An awful teacher....most likely an often human being. Very condescending. Acts like she is the smartest person in the world. Is probably taking out her "losernish" on students.
After 3 2000+ word papers (one of which she compained was "too long"...wtf?), 2 plagiarism accusations, a plagiarism workshop, countless "supplementary readings" that were actually mandatory and a take home final that was truly another 2000+ word essay, I can safely tell you that if you have any self preservation at all, you will run far far away.
For an introductory Sociology course there is a ridiculous amount of work. Almost daily homework questions are assigned which are expected to have a lot of detail as well as three, three page papers are due on top of a midterm. Incredibly hard marker who likes to give out zeros.
She is a very hard maker! She has daily homework assignments, that in total are worth 2% of your final grade. 3 (2000 word) "research" papers (given topics- comparing and contrasting from other articles.) Half of my class failed the 1st essay. Like I said *****VERY HARD MARKER!!!!!******
Terrible teacher. I learned nothing from her. Her poor attitude and demeanor make me question how others can learn.
Way too much homework for a simple first year sociology class. Really hard marker on assignments and pretty sure she has a bias against science students. Nobody finished her midterm because there was too much to do in such little time. Just barely passed and ruined my GPA.
Too much work :S
In three years of university, she is easily the worst instructor I have had. Half the class receives a 0 on any given assignment. She is extremely condescending and rude. The best advice I can give is for you to drop any class where she is the instructor. She will single handily put your GPA in the toilet.
Okay people save yourselves! If you want to keep your GPA DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. I usually get Aâ??s; in this class, I am struggling just to get a D. She gives SO much work but does not give you good marks, most people got 0â??s. I have done more work for this class than any other class that I have ever done, yet will probably just pass?!!!!?!?!
Don’t be scared away by all the negative comments! She was one of the most intelligent and organized profs I’ve had. She is a tough marker but if you go to class/pay attention you'll do fine. I got an A+, trust me, it’s possible. You should be expected to work hard and know the material - WELCOME TO UNIVERSITY.
Way to much work. Chapter assignments, weekly homework assignments, 3 different papers that combine to make the term paper, model seminars and readings that don't even necessarily relate well to lecture. She is, however, quite organized. Very picky on citing, will give you a zero for minor mistakes unless you go to a citations workshop.
Teacher marked way too hard, I have never had a problem with citations but suddenly i have many! lots of assignments- the homework after class will take many hours and is hark work for small mark you get.
She is a super hard marker. The amount of homework was unreal. Such little marks given to big assignments. I would never recommend her. Awful.
SUCH a horrible prof. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. I have never worked so hard in a class for such little marks. Notorious for handing out zeros on little mistakes and SLOW AT HANDING BACK ASSIGNMENTS. Class is assignment based with 3 essays and 7 assignments and homework questions everyday! RUN WHILE YOU CAN!
Terrible teacher. I wonder if she even got her degree to teach at grant Mac. I caught her making grading mistakes on several papers! When I confronted her with challenging my grades, she folded. She is late providing feedback and she grades more on spelling than content. Terrible teacher, avoid her classes altogether.
I read these reviews on her at the start of my semester and decided to ignore all the negative reviews and give it a try. She is extremely rude, no help at all, she barely gives any lectures, her classes are just fellow students explaining what they got from reading the text book. She handed out 0's to everyone in the class. DO NOT RUIN YOUR GPA!
You will have to work your butt of to get a good grade but it can be done. Very stressful to get all the assignments done on time. Go to write and cite before you hand in any assignments, or she will fail you. Do as many model seminars as you can. They are easy marks. I didn't mind the lectures. She takes a long time to mark. Tough class but doable
Unless you only have one class a semester, DO NOT take this course with her. I am so upset I did not read her reviews before taking this class. I was so interested in the course and she made me hate it with her ridiculous high expectations in the amount of work assigned to students. 3 essays, 3 orals, 3 assignments, and weekly page long homework ?s
Experimental grading system is a little weird, but can save your ass if you have a bad test. Don't expect easy marks, but you'll actually learn something.
She gives you a grade planning tool and you put in the estimated grade to figure out what assignments you will do. What she doesn't tell you is that she grades 20% below what you would normally get. I am in my 4th year, I have a 3.9 GPA and these are the consistently lowest marks I've had in a class.
k I think everyone needs to calm down about this professor. Yes she marks SO hard but the more work you do the better you mark is ! you don't suffer all semester because of one bad grade. she has taught me more about proper writing and citing than any other proff! one of my favorite classes all semester!!
Great teacher, learned a lot from her class. Average of A- in all other courses, failed this course. You will learn a lot about Social Psych, but you won't do as well as your other courses. Gave great and helpful feedback on assignments, and gave us a chance at extra credit when plenty of people did poorly on the midterm.
I should have listened to the reviews - what an awful prof! Her lectures are nonsensical & confusing. Her notes/visual aids suck. Midterm was 50 minutes, nobody finished on time, didn't prepare us for the questions. Won't help you if you go to see her during office hours. GPA killer, I had to drop mid-way through the semester to salvage my 4.0.
Anastasia Kulpa is a terrible professor. She bombarded us with history in Soci 101, and did not discuss relevant sociological theories at all. She is rude towards her students and has an arrogant attitude. I get the impression she enjoys hearing herself talk more than whether or not her students understand. I should have listened to the reviews.
Anastasia admits that Soci 101 is not clearly represented in the course catalog; however, I think she still could have done a better job of making the course material digestible. She absolutely bombarded us with history, and I was lost throughout most of the course. She is somewhat helpful during office hours, but it still went over my head.
To date I've done fairly well in this course. However, if I attended more, I'd be sitting top-shelf. Show up, listen, participate (if capable) and engage. Do that, you should be fine. She is fiery about the topic, and although it seems to be more history than sociology, she gets her points across. It's university, not elementary school, prepare!
Kulpa is very vague in her lectures, and oddly specific for exams and papers. She frequently asks pertinent information as a question, leaving you feeling like you have to figure out the material yourself. The grading criteria for papers is very open-ended, yet she grades on specifics. Even with extra help its hard to know what she wants.
She is definitely a tough marker and makes you work for the mark you get, but she also goes out of her way to make things understandable, clear and enjoyable. I really wanted to do well in this class because of the way she taught.
She is an unnecessarily tough marker! On the first case study paper the whole class was worried and complained when we received our marks because some failed and majority did poorly. I usually receive A's on my papers however in her class I was shocked at my low grades. Avoid this prof If you want fair grades and a good GPA.
Impossible marker. Had a 4.0 in every other class I've taken all academic year, she sabotaged my GPA. Pretty sure she failed majority of the class on a paper only worth 10%. Would absolutely never taken her class again. Switch profs while you have the chance ... I wish I listened to the reviews on here. Also waay too many readings. 0/10
One of the worst profs at Macewan. I've never been graded so harshly on my written work. Even on a questionnaire for bonus marks pertaining to our personal opinions on our essay, progress she critiqued my answers. I didn't know a prof I barely knew could know more about myself and my thoughts than I do. Not afraid to fail her class. Avoid this one!
Bad at replying to emails, slow at grading, when you finally receive your grades prepare to amazed at how poorly you did because she gets off on giving low marks. No matter how great you do in your other courses if she is your prof you will have a low grade and your GPA will be ruined.
She's a very smart person but she was a very tough marker and her lectures weren't clear. The midterm was open book, and I got 75% on it. I'm usually an A- or B+ student until I took her class. I got a C in her class. Would not recommend taking her class. This was also a 100 level course. I'm in my 4th year...
Open book tests but don't let that fool you. Her tests are impossible and you barely have time to finish after guessing all the answers because the lecture wasn't clear. Good luck if your taking and may god have soul.
Her powerpoints on blackboard have max 60 words on them. She talks all 50 minutes of lecture & yet doesn't give you definite points to write down. Exams are open book but that doesn't help you. Exams are long. I didn't even finish my midterm & we had extra time. Written assignments are marked hard. Entire class failed an assignment. I dropped it.
Extremely difficult marker. The outlines were specific enough to make you nervous, but vague enough that you had to email her to clarify - not that that helped. Her lectures aren't specific, and the powerpoints had next to nothing on them. She also looks for 'input' from students in lecture, so you learn the students' families instead of content.
Anastasia seems like a nice person but as a teacher she is awful. It is December 1st and we still don't know the format of our final exam for this class. I am usually an A+ student and I'm maybe at a B. I work hard as this is my 3rd year and its so unprofessional the way she teaches. you don't get ur grades back for weeks. save urself, bless up
Before taking this class I read these reviews but decided to have an open mind about her. I should have never done that. She is a nice lady, but I have never seen such a hard marker in my life. I worked my ass off for this class, but my effort was never reflected in the grades I received. Half my class dropped, take with caution
As many of the above reviews said this is definitely a class to avoid. I don't usually write reviews but thought you guys should know everyone is right about her. Extremely tough marker evident in the fact that I can get 90s on my multiple choice then completely fail my written. I regret taking this class and advise to avoid at all costs!
Anastasia is a nice woman, however the sarcasm is unreal. It is not clear as to what is expected of you to do well. Her lectures do not correspond to the textbook. Her midterms are written (lecture) and MC (text). Hope you're lucky enough to finish! I worked my butt of for a B+. Know the work that's coming your way! I wish you luck. God bless.
With many of the other reviews, mine follow the same style. Anastsia Kulpa shows no consideration for having a set format when it comes to teaching and or grading assignments. Her classes are unstructured and dont provide clear content. Save yourselves the hastle and find yourselves a more suitable professor.
Open ended questions are given in assignments, but are marked extremely hard- seemingly by her own set of standards. Would refer to her as an overly picky marker. Her liberal bias in class also makes you take everything she says with a grain of salt.
random unclear assignments. horribly boring and confusing lectures. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
seems like a friend, grades like a senior class
She goes off on a tangent for half the class and doesn't give clear answers to anything. Don't get fooled by the open book exams, her grading is just as messy as her class structure. It's pure stress fam.
I should have paid attention to the reviews.. like another I chose to giver her a chance. She does not teach the material clearly, it is a theory based course and she does not give clear examples of what she is talking about. I met with her after failing 3! take home exercise sheets and am still not clear on what EXACTLY she wanted to see.
Very intelligent prof. Involves the class in amazing discussions and very thought provoking. Marks CRAZY hard though! I always average 80+ on papers but I got in the 60-70with her. Its the way she words her questions, you have to answer things she didnt ask for. She has 5 learning activities which I found enjoyable though. And she was very helpful
I was expecting radical feminist vibes at first, but it didn't end up being a problem. She however, was unclear about the assignments she gave. Some of her assignments aren't marked, but she won't tell you which ones are/aren't - so do them all, lol. Ambiguous questions, so just copycat the things she says in class to do well.
She sarcastic and makes you feel like garbage
simply the worst sociology prof.... overcomplicates everything. assigns group projects in the middle of a pandemic when there is no possible way to actually meet your group members. If you don't over engage with the material you will not meet her standards of "substantive contributions" and you will lose a lot of marks. I would give a 0 if I could
Professor Kulpa is very intelligent but the questions she gives for major assignments are unclear and she marks very hard. I did not feel as though she cared about how her students did in her class, and I found this class to be quite overwhelming. She is much more lenient when grading discussion posts, which saved my grade.
Her expectations for assignments are not clear ... she gives way to much for a online course... long unnecessary group projects makes it very difficult to understand what she even wants her answers to questions are vague so dont bother asking! Would never take her again
save yourself the trouble and avoid this prof. she is unclear on assignments and gives horrible feedback. she seems to enjoy arguing. i would give a 0 if i could.
The class is pretty easy with just the module quizzes and three papers. However, I get that she is having family problems . But being MIA in the last week of the semester with quizzes and a paper needed to be done is very stressful to every students.
Really enjoyed her as a person. Very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter, but very disorganized which made the class difficult for me.
Final is tomorrow and I haven't heard from her in 2 weeks. She consistently pushes back due dates for the modules because she doesn't give us access to it when we are supposed to be doing it. The papers were really easy though and the bonus assignment was simply sending her a YouTube video of a topic we learned about.
If you want to save your GPA, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She was very disorganized, doesn't respond to emails, pushes back deadlines, doesn't provide proper resources to ensure the students' success, and has repeatedly gone MIA on us throughout the class. This was the worst class ever; I didn't learn a single thing from her.
She wasn't able to finish the course, which I can't judge her on that, but taking her asynchronous class was so stressful. Everything was based on the textbook readings. Even though I read each chapter, the quizzes still felt extremely difficult and there were a lot of questions that were not even mentioned in the textbook. She was disorganized.
Kulpa was not able to finish the course and another instructor was assigned to the course; which I can't blame her for. The class structure was very unorganized and the assigned readings did not match the quizzes and tests. Modules were posted late/not at all. She was also difficult to contact if she did respond.
She obviously had something going on in the fall sem 2021 because it was awful. The course itself was already difficult. SO much reading, yet I found the tests to be unrelated. And then getting your marks back on assignments took forever. I didn't even know what I had in the class until after the final. Disorganized, wouldn't recommend ever.
Her lectures were often boring and uninspiring, making it difficult to remain focused and motivated. The perception that the opinions and contributions of international students were not as valuable as those of domestic students led to a hostile learning environment and a widening gap between the student body.
