Good professor, very friendly... take her class. =)
She is a good professor, but can be a bit boring at times. Her exams are pretty straight forward for the most part. Overall enthusiastic and i enjoyed the class. Make sure you attend , hard to grasp some concepts without hearing the lectures.
Her lectures are a bit boring. She isnt as organized in her lecture, but knows what she is talking about. Ask questions when you dont get it otherwise she will keep going and you will be lost. Go to all classes, take great notes, and stay awake
This lady is unorganized! Notes are all over the place & lecture is worse! She has taken >10 days to grade & still hasn't posted exam scores. That gives us <3 days to decide to study for the final (tests are best 2/3). She makes the class hard by being so unorganized. Test Qs cover things she only mentions in passing; you have to learn it yourself!
OMG, I keep asking myself why did I ever take this class. This class is dual taught; 1/2 bacteria & 1/2 virus. She teaches the 2nd 1/2 on virus; put 1/2 of the class to sleep; hard to stay on track; she posts her notes few days after the lectures; unorganized; goes off tangent often; doesn't follow scheduled guidlines so I can't read before hand.
You will be frustrated with her if you take a course from her...so heed all warnings of her and don't take her if you don't have to...
Horrible teacher and laughable tests. She does not know how to write short answer questions for her tests. You have to attend every class and be a genius just to understand what the questions are asking. And it took her two weeks to post the final grade.
this lady is worthless. I can't believe SDSU allows her to teach. I was sorely disappointed
Lectures were incomprehensible, jumped around from subject to subject w/o any plan, didn't stick to the syllabus, tests were hard to study for because they weren't comprehensive. Cancelled class a lot, took a while to grade homeworks, in general was not a good teacher at all. Don't take any classes with her unless you have to.
Anca is not an easy professor and this is not an easy class, but she is very helpful and wants you to do well. Go to her office hours and go to class. She will take the time to help you understand. She challenges you to think, not just memorize and in the end, you will find that you learned a lot.
I hate this class. It should NOT take almost a month to post grades for a 30 question exam!!! So annoying because you can drop one test grade, but what's the point if you're going to tell us our last grade when there's one lecture left to go to. You're not doing anyone any favors!! Lecture's pointless, teach yourself from the book
Extremely unorganized. Material in book and lecture slides were completely different from test question and the majority would get low Cs or Ds on the tests. She gave extra credit and said she would curve but then said everyone had an 80% and she wouldn't curve (obviously incorrect info about test %). Avoid her if you can.
She is over-qualified to be teaching an intro-level microbiology course, and it showed. She did not know how to teach merely the basics of the course, but it was as though she was teaching graduate students who already had a background in the subject. Luckily, she offered enough extra credit that most people ended up with decent grades.
She is the absolute worst teacher at SDSU. She is unorganized, scatterbrained and only cares about her lab. She makes me want to change my major, and this my last semester. She is a useless teacher who should be banned from the classroom and only be allowed to conduct research.
Prob the worst teacher I've ever had. Completely unorganized notes and lecture. Youll need a recorder if you really want to try learning. Thinks we know what she's talking about but definately not. Avoid at all costs because you don't even want to see what the tests are like one midterm one final
Extremely unorganized. Lectures are all over the place and it is very hard to take notes. She is a nice lady but cannot teach.
She doesn't have powerpoints and it is almost impossible to take notes on a daily basis. Buy a recorder and take notes from it later. This is an interesting class but i feel it is impossible to pass from the way she presents the material. Very unorganized and leaves a lot to be desired. STEAR CLEAR if possible!
This class is pointless! :( I read the book, it didnt help. I memorized her ppts and it didnt work either. The thing that helps is paying attention in lab cz thats where I got most of my points on exams. Way too much info for an intro class. Good luck! Oh get Kelly Tait as TA, shes the best! :)
TERRIBLE teacher. You can tell she understands the subject well, but as for getting it across to her students, terrible. Easy to get in contact with, but doesn't usually answer your questions well with her response. The lab is excellent and most of the T.A.'s are great, unfortunately it isn't a combined grade.
Segall knows her stuff, but when it comes to teaching it...she blows. There were four exams(lowest one is dropped) and there was one online quiz for each exam. Class was a complete waste of time and the powerpoints don't help that much. Just teach yourself from the book
She tries to go over three chapters in one class period. Use her powerpoints as a guide, but don't rely on them for her tests. You're better off just reading the textbook than going to class. Study the objectives in the book. The online quizzes were easy. Don't stress out too much because there's a huge curve at the end.
Loved Anca she knows her stuff. But be prepared to work though.
I am a solid student, so you can take this review seriously. Lectures were boring and not very helpful. Usually she went way too fast and covered way too much info for one lecture. I still got an A in the class, but I did not get the quality of teaching I paid for. Exams are too short, and over small range of info, VERY difficult to study for.
Liked her to begin with, but as the semester went on liked less and less. Lectures were extremely boring yet too fast paced. She couldn't get the clickers to work and half the time she took 15 minutes to get set up. Not a good teacher at all. Knows her stuff, just shouldn't be teaching.
Material isnt that hard but doesnt help that prof.segall skips through 75% of the slides to have you do on your own, each test is curved so that helps seeing as how 90% of the class usually gets Cs on her tests, def buy the textbook to go over stuff on your own..ended up giving a lot of extra credit at the end so ended up getting an A:)
Took her online class. She is hard to reach, her tests are difficult, poorly worded and written, and would have been impossible if not for a study group. She is obviously very knowledgeable, but is terrible at teaching/lecturing in a lower-division setting. Good luck in her class & go in with friends!
Online class was pretty hard. I suggest taking the class with Ripken instead. If you are taking the online version, take it with friends because you probably won't pass otherwise.
This class is much harder than a 200 level class should be. I was able to get an A, but I had to watch her online lectures multiple times, read the book word for word multiple times, and find outside sources to clarify. So yes, it is possible to get an A but it took me over 20 hours a week of studying to do it. Honestly, take Bizzoco.
This was the worst online course I have ever taken. She was in another country for 34 of the semester, RARELY responded to emails, didn't post lecture materialtests in a timely manner, and was inconsistent with due dates, assignments and lacked a structured syllabus. Quizzesexams were always graded wrong. Avoid at all costs!!!
This class was the most disorganized online course I have ever taken. Prof was unresponsive, inconsistent, had an unclear syllabus, and her quizzestests often marked right answers wrong. Her lectures are old and boring, like 2010 old. No curve, but she gives a few points of extra credit (what a joke). Would definitely not recommend.
Here we go: Toughest tests I've ever taken. Written, incomprehensible, 3 multi-part q's. She's unorganized. Scatterbrained. Never grades things (only 1st exam). No agenda; never knew what we'd be learning. No resources for help (textbook). Only took class bc required; thought I could handle it after reading reviews... what a joke. I want Dr. Maloy.
This course was terrible. The exam questions were insanely specific making her exams pretty tough. Her lectures were useless as they gave very general information that would be of no use during the exams. She was also very hard to reach. I would not suggest you take this course with her.
Anca didn't respond to any of my emails. The tests are ridiculous. Half of them had material in them that was from previous or future modules. There are so many restrictions on them to prevent cheating that it makes them impossible. Going to office hours landed me a B- in the class. First time I've received lower than an A-.
You should not take this class. Never provided a syllabus, barely made an outline of the lectures to be covered. She posts lectures and study guides from 2009, but then writes new tests, so you fail bc what you studied 2009 lectures. Had three tests in total, all fill in, usually 3 questions worth a lot, so if you dont know a question you fail.
She never once replied to my emails. I hate to say it but i have never had such an unhelpful teacher in my life. I read the textbook chapters and listened to her online lectures and still got C's and D's on most tests. AVOID THIS TEACHER IF POSSIBLE.
She is very unorganized but expects us to be organized. Very unresponsive, but when she does reply it is very unfriendly. Didn't learn much from her lectures. They were prerecorded and very boring so it was hard to keep interest in the topic.
Worst online class I have ever taken. She is unorganized and rude. I sent her multiple emails but she never responds to them. The lectures and tests do not correlate at all. I had to teach myself everything because she is no help at all. Avoid her at all costs!
If you try and communicate with her, SHE WILL communicate back. Her deadlines are confusing, but just stay up to date with blackboard. The tests are incredibly hard and there is a reason for that. It's online and Microbiology is a very INTENSE and HARD subject. People that complain don't understand that this is a hard subject.
As I was once told, some teachers are here to teach and some are here to research. She seems like she would be an amazing researcher. She should not be teaching. The class was going to be online, she released the syllabus after the Add/drop deadline and told students the tests were no longer online and scheduled the tests during other classes.
By far THE WORST PROF. AT SDSU. She does not usually respond to emails, and when she does she is rude and degrading. Gave the syllabus way after the add/drop period and did not even follow it whatsoever. Her class was only based on tests that were not even related the her lecture material. So rude and has no people skills. Avoid her classes!!!
THE WORST Prof I had ever had my whole college experience There was no structure to her classes, or lab or experiments. Her tests and quizzes are the worst because she just came up with those 5 hours before the class AVOID AT ALL COST
She does not follow her syllabus. She waits until the last minute to do everything. When going over the exams she did not know the correct answers and students had to correct her. Tests are inconsistent.
Dr. Segall is absolutely the most unorganized professor at this school. For out first exam she left the country two weeks before the test. She didn't post updated lecture slides until THE DAY BEFORE the exam and didn't answer any emails. Tests have so many typos and since she doesn't administer them we can't ask questions to clarify what she means.
Worst prof at SDSU. Most unhelpful, rude, careless, unorganized professor ive had. does the absolute bare minimum but expects us to know every minute detail. exams were detailed but she said to know general topics. avoid at all costs. had no other choice but to take her and she was the worst part of my T/TH. lots of students took her the dept.
Dr. Segall does not care about any of her students. Most unorganized professor I've ever had. For our first exam she left town and left her husband in charge. She didn't upload the ppt slides until the day before the exam, didn't answer emails and wrote the test the night before the exam. So many typos she had to get rid of 1/5 of the test.
For Spring 2020, Anca Segall was scheduled to teach the second half of the semester for BIO 203. Classes were moved online from Corona exactly when we transitioned to Professor Segall and she has been so accommodating. She canceled our exams and does homework and quizzes per chapter. I can't speak for the regular semester, but she was great online.
She doesn't care. She'll probably handout her exam syllabus and study guide a day before the exam. Knows how to screw over her students and not help them pass during such difficult times.
Taking her biol351 class I was super excited about the topic. And then after two weeks of her lecturing I was already miserable and hating it. Prepare to teach yourself everything, going above and beyond, and still failing your exams. Quizzes every week that are poorly written and extremely difficult that will drag you grade down. do. not. take.
Dr. Segall has actually been one of my favorite professors this far. She is extremely nice, and genuinely wants her students to succeed. Sometimes she is late posting the study guides, but honestly its very straightforward what you will need to study (there is not a ridiculous amount of content anyways). 10/10.
Very smart but probably the worst teacher I have had. Lectures are very unorganized & just pictures of diagrams from the textbook. Only in the past weeks has she wrote some of what she is saying. Her exams are worded weird and the I was successful by reading & taking detailed textbook notes. She doesn't follow the lecture reading schedule though
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She seems very intelligent but is not able to communicate topics well to students. Very unorganized and deviates from the syllabus without warning quite a bit. Overall kind of lazy and does not seem to care about students actually learning the material. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Biochem 2 was one of the top 3 most difficult courses I've ever taken at SDSU, but I learned more in one semester than I have in my entire undergrad degree. Anca is brilliant, receptive, and helpful if you ask for help. Don't expect to skip class and pass. Tests are very difficult and require critical thinking on top of memorization.
Literally worst professor i've had. Very unorganized, half the semester she didn't write anything for activity so we sat in class with nothing to do. 4 exams all worded weirdly, 3 of them held on fridays when we didn't have class but had to make time to take them. Classes cancelled and moved to zoom the day of. She stressed me out all semester.
Worst professor I've ever had. An unorganized catastrophe of a class. Exams were terribly worded and difficult to make sense of. She did not respond to any of my e-mails. Just a complete disaster. I only got the grade I did because I am a great student. Take a different instructor if you value your education.
Weirdest biology class I have ever taken, and in a bad way. Class finished a couple of days ago and she has only posted our syllabus quiz grade despite having multiple homework assignments, two exams, and a group project. All in all, the class was extremely unorganized from start to end. Don't expect much from this class.
Professor is really nice but still the worst I've ever had. Never followed the syllabus schedule so I never knew what to expect in class. Exams are tough(the mean grade for every test was either an F or D) and made me consider if I know how to read because they always have typos and mistakes. Idk why this school can't ever have a good microbio prof
Words can not explain how terrible of a professor she is. The exams make absolutely no sense and she is horrible at communication. She does not want her students to succeed. She is the worst professor of ALL TIME. Wish I could say avoid her class but I am pretty sure she is the only professor for BIO 211.
She's a way better researcher than a professor. Her office hours are more helpful than her lectures. Other than that, it's she's kind of all over the place, offers a lot of extra credit, and exams are worded horribly.
Lectures are not mandatory. I am surprised that the department did not intervene halfway through. Avg exam score was usually an F. Exams were worded weirdly and was full of typos. Be ready to SELF STUDY this class by reading the textbook. Syllabus was posted 1/3 way through semester and it ended up not being followed at all.
Worst professor, was honestly comedic. She taught half the course with another professor who was competent, but Segall seemed like an amatuer? Didn't follow syllabus, her own schedule, exam study guides she created. Her exams tanked grades because it tested content that was discussed in one sentence. She's knowledgable, not instructor material.
How did I get a 93% on the exam taught by the other co-professor, and a 64% on the exam taught by Segall? Her lectures make sense, but it's not what she tests on. Heavy on the "go over this on your own time". Kind person, but really needs to learn to stick to a schedule and actually lecture about what you're going to test on.
I'm sitting in lecture right now writing this. She is genuinely a horrible professor. She is so so so unbelievably rude to the whole lecture. She practically makes fun of us and I've never come across such a rude professor or person in general at sdsu until I enrolled in this class. Please don't take her if you don't need to. Save urself PLS
Professor Segall is extremely disorganized and a poor instructor. Her slides have minimal information on them and she rambles on about stuff we "don't have to worry about" so learning from her lectures is practically impossible. Save yourself the time and teach yourself from the textbook instead of wasting your time in lecture.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. She is terrible at teaching. Her slides are just pictures with no information and all she does is say the information out loud and expects us to be able to write down everything and understand. Definitely take someone else if you can.
Despite posting her slideshows and giving a study guide, as well as outlining what we need to read, her tests were nothing like the material that we were supposed to study. Her lectures consist of her going on irrelevant tangents. Overall, choose a different professor if given the chance, or take the class outside of SDSU.
Anca is the worst Microbiology professor at SDSU. Her exams are only 20 questions max and consist of knowledge beyond her lectures/textbook. She tells you topics are "important" during lecture and not once do they appear on the exam. You get a one page cheat sheet which does nothing despite writing down most of the textbook/lecture material.
Exams had little to no content from lecture OR textbook. I read and studied the textbook for the exam, making a full cheat sheet, and ended up looking at it maybe twice. Many terms/questions on the exam were foreign and not present on her lecture/textbook. She doesn't finish her thoughts/sentences during lecture, making it hard to follow along.
This professor will curve exams in a very unfair way, and makes mistakes in her grading. I had a high grade in exam and then she curves it and grades go down. She is very unorganized, her lectures are very difficult to sit through as she doesn't know how to teach. Her exams are horribly worded and very hard. Horrible professor.
Professor Segall is extremely unorganized, having poor preparation for class from the start of the semester and teaching the content very poorly. The first unit test consisted of material largely not found in either the lectures or the textbook, despite her always insisting that reading the textbook and attending lectures is absolutely necessary.
Run and never look back! if u are reading this its already too, late drop this class or change ur major if u have to I entered this class full of ambition and hope I leave every class broken. she grades us like she's punishing us for our sins we committed in our past life. DO NOT ENROLL! SAVE YOURSELF!
I honestly do not know how to express my frustration in writing. I generally like biology but this class was the most frustrating thing. I have no idea how she was hired. The tests were not based on the lectures or the textbook. The main feeling was just annoyed. I would recommend taking microbiology online at a community college over the summer
She is so rude she just told our class that we do not have a heart or a brain. She rambles about non sense the whole class and nothing of it is on the exam. She messed up the first exam grading legit 3x has no idea what shes doing and is very unorganized. Also a girl just left class and she goes "bye" to be rude.
The class is composed of 4 exams worth 75% of your grade and 10 quizzes worth the other 25%. I failed every exam despite doing 30+ hours of studying. Avoid if possible. Exams are extremely unfair and full of tricky questions. Went to office hours and talked to her many times had no improvement. She wont tell you the curve until the end of the year.
Don't take this class if you can avoid it. I unfortunately had no choice, and I'm about to get my first ever non A grade because of this class. She is confusing, rude, and not helpful in any way. I'm not usually someone who skips, but I started just listening to the lecture on 2x speed so I didn't have to listen to her for as long.
When you think of microbiology, what do you think of? Not about a volcano and whether it's gram - or gram+ even though it's straight up FIRE! She regraded the test about three times; she doesn't know how to teach, let alone how to make a test. She's passive-aggressive, disorganized, and the reason why so many students are on the verge of failing.
There are few good things on God's green earth, and Segall is not one of them. The devil couldn't reach us, so they sent her. This class is the same as AP Bio, YET I am struggling like there is no tomorrow. This is one of the most frustrating classes that I have taken. She is rude and takes pride in the fact that no one is doing good in her class.
Run. Don't look back. Save yourselves.
Emphasizes the need to attend lectures and read the textbook, but that is not what's the test. Very difficult to figure out what the expectations are. Studied 2 wks before exam and received D's and F's (even with a full page cheat sheet). "Hw" assignments were often in person quizzes. Test scores were always below passing, which she took pride in.
Very very disorganized. Struggles to grade properly. Exams are very disorganized. Lectures do not tie into what the exam questions are asking. Exams are so hard. You can use a one sided paper for the exam and have word for word her slides...and have nothing be useful. Her advice is not useful. Take class somewhere else or with a diff professor
This class specifically, 549, was not too bad. Easy even. Don't get scared by the oral final exam. 4 HW assignments (Easy) 0 Quizzes 0 Tests 1 Presentation (Medium Difficulty) 1 Bioinformatic Assignment (easy) 1 Oral Exam (Easy, just understand the prompt) Participation (Depends on if you ask questions or answer them)
This class has been a absolute nightmare. This class should not be this hard. Her exams are NOTHING like what she presents in class and I have literally failed every exam. The final is today and I am crying inside because I need to pass this class and she is the worst. She is rude, no help, and doesn't care if you pass. Don't take this class
IF YOURE READING THIS DONT TAKE HER CLASS WAIT A SEMESTER TO TAKE IT WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR. Tests were on stuff that wasn't even talked about and were written awfully. The lectures are insufferable and she thinks she's a comedian.
I do not respect this professor. I had a 96% in the lab and I got a 77% in the lecture. Many other people I know did a lot worse. She told our entire 300 person lecture that she knows everyone hates her and that we will have to deal with it. Everything on the test was nothing I studied for/ material in the slides. I sincerely hope she gets fired.
Such a bad professor, your grade is completely based on the tests and quizzes. You can use a cheat sheet on the exams which are useless because the lecture is not what she tests on. I watched every lecture and used her study guides and still failed the tests. Take this class anywhere else u can.
Her tests do not reflect what she teaches at all. You can study her slides for 10 hours and still fail her exams because she doesn't test on what she teaches.
SHE. IS. TERRIBLE. I went to every single one of her lectures, took notes, and tried reading some of the textbook. Her tests are NOTHING like the content. I understand the content, then I take the tests and it doesn't align with anything in lecture. This is an INTRO CLASS! Her test questions are obscure and hella specific. AVOID IF YOU CAN🫡
Unfortunately, all the ratings u see are right. She is horrible. Exams are worth 75% of the class and are nothing like what we learn. I read the textbook, took notes, watched lectures, asked ChatGPT for help, and used her study guides. I understood the content, but the exams were nothing like it. If you're taking this class, good luck!! praying 4 u
I don't usually leave negative reviews but this class was not enjoyable. 4 exams w/cheat sheet, 2 by her 2 by the other(better) prof. Her exams had obscure questions on stuff not in the lectures or textbook. If she's the only prof available, self-study and just do your best. While not impossible, her class made 211 much harder than it needed to be.
holy moly this class was my first C and its clear why. Professor Segall constantly goes off topic in all of her lectures and does not communicate to students what material will be on the tests. I would avoid taking microbio with this professor at all costs. The class averages were constantly below 60%.
I would take ochem calc and physics at the same time before taking her again. Worst prof I have ever had and failed me, stating that my grade reflected my effort. Meanwhile, her tests did not reflect her teachings. She somehow created the world's most boring class. If you want a prof who doesn't care about you, then look no further!
