Bleh, bleh, bleh.
Great professor. Funny, knows her stuff. She's enthusiastic and sometimes that freaks people out, but I like her. Cool activities.

i've never had a professor keep my attention like this one. very interesting teaching style, very interactive, and open. it kicked my butt, but i loved the class.
super interesting and you have to actually use your head. not too hard but not easy either really. she can be a little disorgainized but is extremely passionate and straighforward. good teacher.
A major jerk. Talks about students to other students. Lies to students. Can't stand her. Worst teacher that I have ever had.
terrible, arrogant, basically a "femi-nazi" (to use her own terms) I wouldnt take her again
She is very passionate about what she teaches and would go out of her way in a heart beat to help a student. She is very self assured and will push you to be the same way. Her classes are amazing and she always has good real life exampes and antidotes. Her classes will challenge and fascinate you.
not the easiest class but i learned a lot!!!!! she's really passionate about teaching and bends over backwards to help students get it. she gives clear expectations. if you're a slacker she'll respect that, but don't expect an easy A. still, pretty fun, overall.
Fun...makes good effort to get points across..NOT A ****!!
awesome class, awesome prof. learned a lot.
This class wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Dr S tells you exactly what's expected and she really understands all the other crap that you have going on. You need to show up to class prepared to get the most out of class. Her sense of humor and relaxed class atmosphere really helped.
Absolutely rude, unhelpful, condescending and mean. Horrible to students in front of class. Made several students in class cry. Horrible woman.
She amazing. Sure, she is opinionated, plays devil's advocate, and she's a bit of a feminist, but if you hold your, engage yourself, and participate, it will be one of the most amazing classes and teachers you will have at BU
One of the best professors I have had at Belmont, and this is my senior year. She truly made the subject extremely interesting and fun. She has clear expectations and is very helpful. She also is someone that I feel comfortable coming to with personal i
andi is a true asset to belmont!!!! she is fantastic, inspires students, and keeps things real.
Wonderful teacher and very challenging. She is so passionate about her work and really wants the best for her students. I learned so much in her class and you will too. She is a great teacher.
I am loving this class...and Dr S. She really cares about students and bends over backwards to help them. She brings in news clips, videos, music, and does a lot of discussion. I am *never* bored. Clear on what's expected so it's not difficult. Met with me several times for test prep.
Class is great. There's lots of info, but she Andi makes it relevant. Plus, she really cares about her students. She sends us "inspirational" emails all the time and has emailed me a few private emails to check in on me. She has a day blocked off in the syllabus to check in with how everyone's doing, too. Treats everyone fairly.
This class is very difficult!! You must do web CT posts 2 times a week. There is a lot of reading and the tests are very difficult. 2/3 of the semester the class is boring, the only part I found interesting was the last section. Very hard!
Without a doubt, this was one of the most challenging GND classes that I've taken - but I learned so much! It takes a while to get used to her antics but she kinda grows on you. her passion for the course is infectious. very engaging & made sociology relevant for us. make sure you do read before the tests though.
best prof i've had at belmont. really cares about students. doesn't just lecture...tries to get everyone involved and hear everyone's ideas. we had lots of discussion, activities, and a couple of films. reading is about right for college but if you don't like to read, this class isn't for you. am considering a change in major to soc.
I had her for about four class sessions before I realized how rude and condescending she was and never went again.
Class is interesting but pretty hard.
andi really cares about her students and goes out of her way to help you - handouts, meetings w you. passionate about the subject matter and funny. Fast paced classes so you need to be ready for class. its interesting and not a heavy load if you manage your time well. learned a lot. helps you form your own opinions. also v helpful on papers
She is very worthy of respect for the amount of work she accomplished to get where she is, but she is extremely condescending and not easy to work for. I only wanted an introduction, not an upper level course!
Andi is a great prof who kept my interest and who cares about students. Lot of reading but not difficult. High energy level and humor help a lot--esp in the a.m.
She is really into what she does, however that doesn't make her any less rude or hard to work with. If you ever have a problem don't expect her to try and help you out. She cried in our class and told us we were the worst class she had ever had. I felt like telling her she was the worst professor I'd ever had!
it's the start of the semester and i actually miss stepnick's class from fall. she's so passionate about what she does and knows so much it's unreal. class is intense but laid back at the time if that makes sense. trust her when she says "trust me" re grades - it seemed to work for me but read, do the work, ask questions as needed.
This class blew me away. It’s the class I’ve been waiting for. Andi is a great professor.
She's cool when just discussing things but sometimes it's pretty one sided in her favor. It's all talk and no solutions it seems. I'm not a fan of the material but most of it is fairly interesting. She seems to need positive sanctions constantly too.
Andi is a very deep thinker. Her class is only for those who are willing to think deeply as well. If you go into her class prepared to learn somthing useful, you will. Her class has changed my view of society drasticly. Andi can be overwhelming, but just tell her how you're feeling, and she'll help the whole class out. She really knows her stuff.
HORRIBLE. absolutely worst teacher I have encountered. Immature, not professional on any level. STAY FAR FAR AWAY.
This class, by far, is the best class I’ve had this semester. The way Dr. Stepnick teaches is very effective.... comedic and relatable, yet powerful at the same time. Addresses world's problems and how we can help in a variety of ways. she helped me become more aware of things around me that i'd never thought of until now. very passionate.
Loved this class. Yes, you have 2 group exams but 2 wks to do them. Easy & less pressure than having exams during class time. You can do final on your own, but *nobody* in our class took this option. Andi gives 100s on a few small papers and wkly reading - if you *do* them. That takes off the pressure. Fun class. Application not all lecture.
i can see why andi could be viewed as immature, however, she is simply living life and having fun. she cares about her students, and if you are willing to care about her class and the material presented you and your grade will benefit. i loved it.
I took a link w Dr Stepnick & Dr. Thomas. There was work, but overall it was a lot of fun. Dr S uses a lot of approaches - video, lecture, discussion, news articles, activities. Very passionate and wants you to learn. It was overwhelming at times but Dr S helped us de-stress & really cared. Group projects turned out to be fun & meant less work.
This has been one of my favorite classes at Belmont so far. Dr. Stepnick is really passionate about what she does & it made me excited & want to do well. She offers a lot of help. Be prepared not just to read but to write and think about what you're reading. The class is pretty relaxed, though. I definately think about things differently now.
Andi's gender class rocked. At first, I didn't have any idea what was going on but she said to stick with it and I'd eventually "get it." She was right! From then, I could see what she was trying to get us to do and I could finally relax. Weekly papers to help us analyze the readings plus big research project. Discussion based class.
scatterbrained. hard to understand. bad at assigning things clearly. hard to keep up.
LOVE THIS CLASS!!! Dr. S strives hard to keep students' attention and to actively engage everyone. She takes the time to care about each individual. Her primary goal in the class is for us to learn and apply sociology to our own lives and she has succeeded for me. She is so passionate about what she does that it is contagious!
Dr S does a good job getting us to share our ideas and different perspectives. A few people in my class don't get the sociological perspective *at all* but she patiently listens to them. She's done extra handouts for us, etc to try to help us understand. I'm in business and think this info will be helpful for work later on.
Best teacher at Belmont. I didn't care about sociology before but her class has greatly enhanced my thinking. She comes off as mean at times but one can tell she definitely has love in her heart. Advice: Do the reading assignments! They suck to get through but it's very important to understanding anything inthe class.Pay Attention, easy A or B.
Run away! Run, run away.
This class really took my critical/SOC thinking to a new level. Dr S is both intense *and* laid back. The class is fast-paced so read and take good notes *beforehand*. Dr S uses films, lecture, discussion, activities, etc to get the point across but you need to be ready to go. Community service was amazing. One of the best teachers at Belmont.
Intro to Soc was one of the best experiences of my college career. Dr.S has high expectations for her students, but she provides the encouragement and motivation necessary for success. Don't skip out on the readings, that's definitely bad news.
Run, run away. This class is not for anyone who thinks for themselves. And God forbid you have opinions contrary to Stepnick's. Thank God she's there to tell you just how wrong you are. Nancy Reagan was halfway right when she said Just Say No. She just needed to apply it to all things Stepnick instead of drugs.
Great professora. Intense, but this is a good thing. Should probably keep her personal imput on situations within her classroom though.
Agree with the other rater. Dr S. is intense! Class is still kind of relaxed although fast paced. You *have* to be prepared or you'll be lost. Very open to differing opinions but you need to back up what you say with evidence or she'll call you on it.
Don't mistake challenges for personal persecution. She wants you to think clearly and with an open mind. The class isn't 'hard.' It is taught like you are expected to read, learn, and think critically. I loved this class. Andi is great!
This class was the best of my college career. Dr. Stepnick is passionate about Sociology and that makes me more excited about it, too. She'll go out of her way to help you as long as you are doing the basic work that's required. A little goofy, a little intense but worth it!
I took the soc/bio link. This class sucked! It is an opinionated class that she expects everyone to take a multiple choice test. She says that she is giving 'love gifts' but she is actually just trying to not get on your bad side (didn't work). When she says it is easy, she lies. RUN FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!!
I cannot begin to explain how great this class was. I learned more from this class than any class I have ever taken. Not only did I gain book knowledge but I gained a better understanding of a population of individuals who are shunned and left out in todays society. I was able to go into their world and I gained so much insight.
Dr. S's class was INTENSE. You HAVE to do your reading before hand, & take notes before coming to class. She practically demands that you speak up in class with opinions, but just don't have a different opinion than hers. I thought the class was EXTREMELY difficult & struggled.
She is nice, but I'm telling you...this woman LOVES Sociology. It is a ridiculously intense class. You HAVE to read (and there is tons of it each night), you HAVE to post on Blackboard, and you HAVE to be in class. If you do, you will make an ok grade. This class takes so much out of you. If you like Sociology, she would be a great teacher for you.
She's really nice but this class is intense and is the source of most of my stress about school
This class was an amazing experience. Clearly, Dr. Stepnick invests all of her time & energy into her classes. She is incredibly respectful to her students. I feel that she values us as individuals and motivates us to do our absolute best, in school and in our lives. I am so thankful for this experience and would recommend it to anyone.
She is rude, loves to make you look like an ass in front of the entire class, she is always right so don't even try to be, she is a very mean lady who ruined my day. Every teacher I've encountered at Belmont has been very nice, but this woman ruins that. If you like to feel stupid, belittled, and very insecure, then this teacher is perfect for you.
She's ridiculous. If you're unlucky enough to get stuck in a class that she doesn't like, you'll be treated horribly. She asked for our feedback once and, humiliating most of us, she read the anonymous comments out loud and instead of taking constructive criticism, she made it seem like it was our fault. You can't win in her class. Ever.
The comments below this are absolutely ridiculous, and make me so sad and angry to see. Dr. Stepnick is a GOOD teacher, and because she is such a good teacher, naturally, her class IS challenging. But it's such a fun time and she really cares about her students!!!She puts so much effort into making things easier for us...I love her and you will too
I adored this class. Dr. Stepnick was an amazing professor. Yes, she was hard, but she really loves her field and she wants her students to realize just how relevant it is to their lives. She cares about her students and those who don't see that are blind. If you're willing to work hard I would highly recommend taking Stepnick's course.
Dr. S cares about her students. Lots of chances to earn grades & ex cred. Does a lot to make class relevant like analyzing music videos. She asked for feedback a few times although doesn't have to. She does it cuz she wants us to learn & like class! She read comments 1x to show that what some liked others didn't & to find solutions to problems.
Dr. S is a nice teacher who seems to really care if students do well in her class. She is a little intense sometimes, and sometimes just doesn't make that much sense. She does give lots of extra credit though and seems like she wants students to do well. I had the bio/soc linkage and saw a lot of linkages I would have otherwise. It was intweresting
I loved this class!!! There were times I would get frustrated and realized it was usually my own fault for not being prepared. She wants you to do well and is very supportive of every student. FOR EXAMS: USE THE STUDY GUIDE! Fill it out, take the time, learn from my mistake!
She was very nice and helpful, but will not give you the answer to anything. You are totally in charge of your own grade in the class. I didn't study for a test and got a 58.. study, study, study!
Dr. Stepnick is Belmont's best professor. She is a supremely talented teacher and a true intellectual. There's even something a little entrancing about her; many professors can't make a 50 minute class bearable, but she can hold your attention for a three hour class. Very challenging but overwhelmingly rewarding.
Time for a more recent review of Stepnick! She can be hilarious but also a pain. She values how well you learn above what grade you make. LOTS of class participation. Overall she's not as bad or hard as others say. She ligitly wants everyone to do well and makes herself very available to help as well as gives lots of examples and activities.
Andi is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered. Her rules and expectations could not be any clearer on the 1st day. She will help you outside of class as much you want, but you have to put effort into it. It's about learning the material, not forming your own opinions based of readings (very important) Do what she asks, get an A.
worst teacher to ever exist. has no idea what she's talking about at all, but if you even make a facial expression showing you have a different view, expect your grade to drop. pretend to idolize her, expect your grade rise. she loves to ridicule her students in front of the rest of the class. don't you dare forget your name tag!
She is the sole reason I'm stuck unable to transfer out of Belmont. She forced me to withdraw from her class simply because she felt like it. I didn't even break a single rule. So now I have a withdraw from the intro course to my major meaning no school will take me, and I had to pay for it anyway and was unable to switch into another class. -____-
You have to do responses to readings often..they are not hard, just consuming and eventually she just gives you credit for doing it. I wasn't doing well(the tests suck! mostly MC), but she is willing to talk outside of class..once I talked to her she would give me "hints" to help my grade. Just talk to her 3 times she will like you..I promise!
Very difficult. She doesn't use powerpoints much. Discussion based,so if you don't talk much.. good luck. I was confused most the course. Lots of reading to do especially at the beginning.
Thought-provoking!
I was not looking forward to this class but in the end I loved it.I learned more from this class than any other I've taken at Belmont.Yes it's a little challenging but that's why I'm in school.Learning can be challenging.I've had much harder classes that's for sure.I loved the discussion! I also loved the Powerpoint she used in EVERY SINGLE CLASS.
Andi comes off very strong in class, you need to get to know her OUTSIDE of class. Take an interest in the course. Visit her office and drink tea with her. Intro to Soc is very very hard, and you must commit a lot of time to this class. But Andi is not as bad as everyone says she is.
not too exited to take this class but it ended up being my favorite at Belmont so far. Dr S gives study guides, sample test questions, & lot of handouts if you want them. Tests aren't hard but you need to read before class -- it's lecture & some discussion. She wants students to learn & do well. Super enthusiastic. No phones in class tho.
So intense. For an elective, I had more homework in it than any other class. She's nice, mostly fair on tests, but reading 50-75 pages every 2 days gets old really quickly.
Andi is great. She is a little intense but seriously goes out of her way to help you out. There is a lot of reading and discussion but she is so enthusiastic and passionate. She really does all she can to help her students enjoy the class. She is respectful and does her best not to make anyone feel stupid even if they're wrong. Wonderful professor!
Dr. Stepnick is difficult and there's a lot of reading, but you'll leave her class knowing something useful. She's happy to help with whatever you need clarified. Just be prepared: there's a lot of reading in this course, and it's pretty hard for an intro level class.
Her assignments are like she assumes you don't have any other classes to study for. be prepared to do a lot of reading hour long videos for homework! She rewrites the syllabus and sends it in emails that don't make it to you until after the fact, then won't post revised syllabus on bb because its too difficult so done with this class.
Her "peppy" attitude made me initially excited about this class, but I was proven horribly wrong. If you don't participate, she'll assume you could care less about the class and begin to ignore you or challenge you in weird ways. If you don't do the reading, that's also a death wish. THE TESTS. oh, the tests. Don't take this class.
BEST class yet! There are four tests the entire semester. We right four papers which are graded with good faith effort. If you do not plagiarize, and you properly site you get a 100% on EVERY paper. She has never assigned more than ten pages of reading in a week, and she is way down to work with you outside of class. Extra credit assignments!!
Test are super hard
Dr. Stepnick is very intelligent and keeps class interesting! However, I really struggled with her tests! They were pretty difficult, but she gives extra credit opportunities that helped me. Reading is a huge part of the class.
She's passionate and obviously intelligent. My problem was that a lot of the kids in my class never read or showed up, and I felt like she was assuming that none of us cared even though I did. The class began to slow down/topics would get skipped and she kept everything brief and basic. Too much time "talking to your neighbor" which was a waste.
She's a good professor who leads interesting discussions and obviously cares a lot about sociology. A lot of time is spent on class discussion rather than going over the book stuff (which is what's on tests) which made tests hard. You have to read to pass tests. She shows cute youtube videos at the start of each class which is always a fun time.
I liked powerpoint to review concepts from the books, but I'm glad we had a lot of discussion so we could apply it to what's going on in our lives or society. If you read before class you should do pretty well. Otherwise you'll be lost. Learning how to deep read was huge for me. It's so easy to just blank out when reading. See Dr S for help!
Probably one of the easiest professors at Belmont. Only 4 grades the entire semester, though--4 tests that get harder throughout the semester. Very liberal and lets you know it. Doesn't have much time for other perspectives. Why should a sociology class be political?
Prof Stepnick had high expectations, but never really followed through with them. If you do the reading for the class, you will have no problem on the discussions or tests. That being said, if you don't, you will not do well.
She seems nice at first - she made us tea on the first day of class - but she's actually quite terrible. She has high expectations, but like, her expectations are that we know everything before she teaches it. She's a caring person, but she's a nightmare as a professor. Don't take her unless you have to. It's passable (barely), but not worth it.
Very very smart lady, but I did not enjoy her class. She would get mad if we did not understand things that we had not gone over, and most of what I learned in the class I taught myself. I had her for a linked class, and some of the papers I would make A's in the other class on, she would give me a C at best. Test are hard but bearable if you study
If you do the homework (mostly readings from the textbook/articles and watching videos) you should do fine. At times, her teaching style is very hard to understand, and I wish she had done more to link the course to our other LLC. She was very understanding of deadlines though and often times extended them. Overall, I didn't enjoy her class
Very enthusiastic. One of the best professors I've had. Now I see things totally differently. I felt comfortable in this class because Dr. S made it a supportive environment. So amazing. A tough workload but worth it. Weekly papers graded 100% if you follow the directions so easy A for that part.
Doesn't actually define terms or explain things to students, instead she has students participate in discussions about what they think ideas mean and she either says "Not really." or "What does the next student think?" We read the chapters but she go over nothing about within the book. Instead, we link random things to sociology. SHE'S THE WORST.
Dr. Stepnick is extremely intelligent but seems to overlook student's needs to learn the material. She has in-class discussions daily that do not link with key terms and leaves all of the commenting up to students and never explains. Her PowerPoints are never useful and the tests are extremely difficult. Class with her must be self-taught.
Loved her as a person but for an entry level class this one was pretty tough. I would recommend her for sociology majors and those really interested in sociology but if you are looking for a blow-off class do not take her course.
This class can be really easy if you read the chapters along the way and follow along with the syllabus. She's really passionate about sociology and her students. She gives TONS of extra credit. (Like most of your assignments and quizzes will be extra credit) You don't really have to come to class but she's fun and shows cute animal videos.
I never write reviews but never take sociology with Stepnick. Worse class I have taken at belmont. Treats students like middle schoolers and is not clear about class work or material. Feel belittled as a student in her class and did not feel prepared for any of her exams even after completing the homework and reading the textbook.
Class mostly girls. I pretty much am the only male to raise my hand daily. She will not call on me. She probably called on my a total of 3 times. She loves to hear what the ladies have to say. I pay to sit in class and not get to participate and that's wrong. Guys. Do not take this class. Ladies. You will love her. Sad I didn't check this site b4.
Wasn't sure about this class at first, but really came to like it and appreciate Dr. Stepnick. She really cares about students as people and wants class to be useful to you. Powerpoints were helpful, but I enjoyed discussions & activities more. Do the reading. Use the online material. Lots of bonus points. Coming away w/ more than I expected to.
Dr. S is absolutely fantastic! Enthusiastic about what she's teaching and always open to hear ideas no matter how off-topic they sometimes get. When they do get off topic she is quick to bring the conversation back in! DO THE READING!!! It is so so helpful. She is very open to meeting with students if you need help. Highly recommend!!
This class was excellent. I think Dr. Stepnick may be the best professor I've had at Belmont so far. She really is very smart and I learned SO MUCH from her. This class really exposed me to so much I didn't have a clue about. Just do the work and come to class prepared and you will be really happy you took this class.
She is very enthusiastic about the material and genuinely wants her students to learn and succeed. If you prefer a very structured powerpoint based class, she is NOT the professor for you, class is largely discussion based off the day's readings. Overall grade is test-heavy, but tests are very manageable. Bad test-taker? She is very compassionate
She is very passionate about teaching the material however, there are little to no lectures. Most of the class is spent talking about our opinions on the topics we read. She NEVER gives you a straight answer about anything, she will make others in the class tell you what you think. The tests are also very confusing because of her wording.
Dr. S uses a mix of teaching styles. Some lecture with powerpoint, discussion, activities. She tells you waht to focus on when you read. Homework is an easy A. Tests are challenging, but reasonable. I study about 2 hours a week and have an A. Starts class with a cute video. Brings snacks on exam days. Cares about students.
Not a bad professor. If you're looking for an easy A I would not recommend. She makes you work for your grade and her test questions can be confusing. Listen carefully for her advice because it will help you. I definitely learned a lot from her and she has fun activities that make the class better. GO TO CLASS. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE.
I loved this class. Dr. S challenged me to look at the world w/ a new lens. I have learned so much in a short time. You can tell she cares about her students and that she wants you to understand the material. Read for class and it's not hard. Class is organized & new material builds on prior info -- so keep up. Listen to her advice. Take her!
I have never rated a teacher before- but I am writing to warn you underclassmen who have to take SOC. Take from a different teacher. She treats the class like third graders. She took the clock off the wall- you're not allowed to wear apple watches or use phones. Tests are still hard even after doing all the hmwrk. I dread coming to this class.
Dr. S is great. She care about you & wants you to do well. She encourages participation & treats everyone w/ respect. If you do the homework, you earn 100%! Tests make you think, but their reasonable. I've had some problems this semester & Dr. S was always willing to help me. No phones in class which is hard at first but helps you focus.
Andi is a great woman overall. Her class is very difficult and you have to go in expecting to read a lot. I didn't get the hang of her tests until it was too late. She tries very hard to incorporate all learning styles that it just didn't work very well for me. She has some different perspectives, but she makes you find your own
andi's really passionate about sociology. you need to read, but weekly hw isnt bad. pretty much like my other classes but if you do it, you get 100% which brought my grade up. plus there are bonuses. i met w/ her to review an exam & she was helpful (plus you get tea & snacks). she wants you to do well & has lots of extra stuff in blackboard.
At first, I hated this class/teacher. 5 weeks in, realized I was seeing the world differently & seeing people differently. As a Christian, it helped me see that I was judgeing people based on assumptions/stereotypes. It took me a while to DrS really cared about us & our learning. Became my favorite class & prof. but you do have to study/learn it.
Prof. Stepnick is a really great person and her class is interesting, however, her tests are extremely challenging. Most test questions are made to trick you, and cover difficult topics to understand.
This was an intro class, yet it's way more difficult than it has to be. She claims to cater to introverted students, yet the entirety of her class is discussion-based. In one instance, she embedded her grievances with another class into an exam question, which I found very immature. There are easier sociology classes; don't take this one.
She's an amazing sociologist & the most caring professor at Belmont! She puts in so much extra work to make sure you're catered to. Brings snacks and drinks to class! Please participate--Homework is easy, helpful, but class is discussion-based. She doesn't want to disrespect introverts so she won't force you, but you'll have a better experience.
Avoid taking this professor at all costs. She is does not prepare you for her tests, and she does not prepare the tests until the night before. She is rude, vindictive, and unfair to her students. I cannot believe that a $50000/year college would hire such an unprofessional professor.
Love! She really loves teaching & students. Let us vote on topics & assignments which was cool. Good balance between tests, hw, participation, etc. Mix of lecture, discussion, activities. Blew 1st exam & freaked out. Meeting w/ her helped a lot. Started using study guides. Went from D- to A-!! Funny. Brings snacks on exam days. Recommend.
she's great. passionate. funny. seriously smart. just read, think, do the hw, and you'll be fine
This was an introduction class, and was way harder than it needed to be. The tests are really hard and feels like they are made to trick you. The class is entirely made of reading and honestly I didnt gain anything from her lectures. I felt like I had to teach myself everything... extremely disliked
If you want to take a Sociology class from a professor that has spent her life educating herself so that she can help others explore the interesting science of Sociology, take Dr Stepnicks class. She is never boring. Her lectures are not spoon-fed to her students, simply because part of the experience is to ponder her topics. Take her class!
Andi Stepnick is one of the best profs you'll ever take at Belmont. She is kind, caring, and has a real drive and passion for teaching soc. She challenges you to think deeply in the best way possible and works hard to make sure her students are succeeding. Every reading is thought our for the purpose of learning. Best prof ever!!! You won't regret!
Ive never had a teacher that was so disorganized with her communication to students after the transitioning to online classes. You basically have to teach the material yourself. Too many instructions/emails for small assignments. Sometimes rude/snide comments sent to students and overall lack of professionalism. Please seriously do NOT take her!
DrS is the best. cancelled our last 2 exams & basically gave us all As for showing up which is good b/c I just could *not* motivate all month. id wait til the last min. to do everything which made the semester 20x worse. she was always trying to help & i wouldn't have passed w/out all the extensions. Never thought i'd miss going to class.
Andis passionate about Soc. Shes approachable & tries to make us think. She surveyd us about what we wanted to learn & how we wanted to do online classes. I had to think more than w/ in person but learned a ton. Super flexible w deadlines. She put thought & effort into giving us as much info about assignments as needed. Super helpful syllabus.
Dr Stepnick basically thinks she knows everything and will make you feel stupid if you don't know anything. She thinks she is all high and mighty because she has written several books and has received several awards from Belmont for her "excellent teaching". She is very annoying and rarely tells you anything that you could take notes on to study.
I always give professors 5's until I had her. She was scattered, overwhelmed, and occasionally unprofessional or rude. She'd send long, rambling emails where she complained about her life and you had to dig for actual info about HW. Basically had to teach myself this class. Makes it much harder than it needs to be. Asking for help was a nightmare.
Dude, this class is wild. She is such a kind person but I'm genuinely so confused no matter how much prep I do, and classes are always very awkward and uncomfortable. She'll ask questions constantly and go off on tangents. Quizzes and tests are pretty hard, participation is weirdly difficult, and I'm not even really learning much. Don't do it.
DrS is nice & wants you to learn. Pretty easy A. HW is 100 if you do it. Multiple tries on quizzes. Tests are reasonabe and she gives you study guides. Lots extra credit! She asks thought provoking questions so you need to read to participate. Stays after every class to help anyone who wants it. Favorite prof so far.
Love Dr. S. Her style is different & I had to get used to it. She doesn't lecture at you, she expects you to work w/ the reading & then help you think critically by asking questions. She always asks if everyone understands / has questions before moving on. Passionate about sociology & taught me to be more aware of the world. 10/10 would take aagain
She's very passionate about her field. I had zero interest in sociology until I took her class. She had me looking forward to learning. I had to ask for some help (I was struggling with all of my classes) and she was so nice and so caring. She was just very kind to me. I had to work but I learned more in this class than I did in any others.
I loved this class! Although it was on Zoom, I learned so much! DrS always has a plan but is flexible, too. She really cares about students & always asked how we're doing & how class was going. I loved her detailed syllabus & assignments because I like knowing whats expected! She asks really good questions. Weekly reflections were helpful.
Dr. Stepnick is one of the most intentional professors Ive ever had. Her love for students is evident how she approaches every class. She helped me grow in empathy toward others and taught me to set time to deeply read. I retain so much more info when I print hard copies & mark on the pages. I definitely continue to do that! Always willing to help
I've read some of the past reviews around her and, to the low reviews, I believe she has adapted her teaching style over the whole pandemic thing. Online class went smoothly for me, we only had to participate via chat, and she made assignments clear. Good class once you get going, do the readings, great teacher. She's educated and educative.
All she does is lectures that class is so boring but she is nice and cares about her students the homework load is not too bad but there will be required assignments that take a decent amount of time but she grades them super easy she is hard to reach outside of class and is not great at communicating what is due and how she wants things completed
I was scared of Andi at 1st because she's so passionate about soc & learning. After a while, I realized she really cared about me as a person, not just a student. She'd end every class w/ "thank you" & reminded people that she was there to help. Reading before class is essential. She'll teach you how to really read & retain info. Helpful! 10/10.
Dr. Stepnick really cares about her students and makes sure to listen to their needs. It was tough to be engaged in the class because it was online but it was otherwise fine. There is a lot of reading but no textbook and everything you read is helpful and beneficial.
A good example of the "smart person but bad teacher" persona we often toss around. She'll talk ears off about things that have nothing to do with class content just to make sure you know how woke she is. I wish she taught by a textbook. I would log off class with a headache thinking "what was the point of that?" She leaves reviews here too LOL!
The material in this class is interesting, but the lectures can be boring. This might be to the fault of being on zoom 3 times a week for this class, so if you are thinking of registering for Andi IN PERSON - do it! She is caring, considerate, and a fair grader. Participation matters so make sure you answer questions even if you think you're wrong.
Andi is a fantastic professor. Helpful and truly wants us to succeed. She is passionate about sociology & positively impacting students lives. She inspired me be a better learner and person. Listen to her tips. They help! Grades based on good faith. Basically do it on time & earn 100%. Plus so much extra credit.
DrS was a really good professor. She had high expectations for her students but is understanding, respectful, and had grace for us. I never felt like I was just another student. I could tell DrS wanted what was best for us as people not just students. She offers tons of resources. She related class to real life and I defiantly learned a lot!
Dr. Stepnick is an amazing person and professor, I just felt as if this intro class is a little bit too much work (exam wise). The questions are really tricky on any work that you complete. She does really care and helps out a lot though. Her Blackboard set up is really confusing as well. An ok choice for a gen-ed if needed.
Dr. S was flexible, She made sure that everyone got the chance to learn what they needed to & adapted the schedule if we needed more time. HW is always 100% if you do it on time. Multiple tries on quizzes. Flexible participation credit. That 60% of your grade is an easy A. Exams were challenging, but ok & she gave us study guides. Interesting.
I'm only 4weeks into her class,I hate it. She excessively emails us, is never clear on assignments,& scattered all the time. Trying to get help from her is difficult. Has high expectations, her assignments/homework rules are unreasonable. She cares/tires make students feel comfortable but this class is difficult to navigate, especially as a freshman.
Andi knows what she's talking about and wants you to understand. Homework is an easy A. Same assignment each week on a diff topic. defiantly do the extra credit. Andi is kind. Ask for help if you need it or just show up for office hours. Class is a mix of lecture, discussion and activities. So not for everyone but I like it. Interesting topics.
Dr. Stepnick is all over the place, she never is clear on any assignments. She also doesn't let you use your computers, her lectures are all over the place, and she has a very confusing syllabus. Coming to class makes content more confusing than skipping, I honestly can't stand being in class. DO NOT TAKE.
Do not take this class. Dr. Stepnick is a great person but a bad teacher, I hate saying it but she is all over the place. Her syllabus makes no sense, the homework is hard to comprehend and she excessively emails us. Love her as a person but I can't stand the class, at all.
Her lectures are all over the place. Not much was learned and her teaching is not very effective no matter how many studies she quotes. Not very responsive to emails and does not grade. Great person bad instructor.
Loved Dr Andi. Weekly homework is 100% if you do it on time. Basically you're working on the exam study guide. Quizzes have 3 tries each and lots of time. 2 exams on class materials. The study guides help and they're in BB day 1. A lot of pople liked the powerpoints but i liked discussion more. Dr Andi cares about her students and it shows.
You can easily pass this class. Homework is graded on effort. Lectures are sometimes difficult to comprehend, so read the textbook outside of class. She's also available to help students outside of class if they need help. Lectures are also heavily based on open- discussions and participation but they can be interesting. Most students should pass.
She makes no instructions clear and will want one thing and ask for another in assignments.
Took for my ILC. wasn't looking forward to it but she's great. Weekly HW assignment is the same each week. Easy. Get 100% each time. 2 tests are harder but doable. ILC project wasn't easy but not hard. Clear expectations. Interesting lectures/discussions. Learned a lot. Kind. Extra credit. Assessible outside of class. Cute videos each day!
Had Dr.S for intro. which felt intense because I didn't have to study in high school. She was helpful and clearly cares about you as a person. She taught me to believe in myself. Took 2 more classes w/ her. She designs class based on what students want to learn! She helped me get better at research, thinking and writing and seeing diff perspectives
Took as part of the ILC w nursing. Interesting topics. Weekly homework and quizzes but easy. 2 tests and the ILC project. Met w/ Dr. S about that twice and she was really helpful. Did 4 of the extra credits which boosted my exam grade about 12 points. More formal structure and NUR but easy to understand and you know what's expected.
-will ask you for one thing in an assignment and then grade it as if it is wrong -does not give clear definitions of topics -her explanations are confusing -assigns a lot of homework
Took w/ .nursing ILC. Interesting topics. Nice professor. Easy to understand w lots of examples. 1 homework each chapter defining concepts and applying them to life. Easy. 2 tests. Not bad. Group presentation on a topic of our choice on video so we could do multiple takes or edit. much less stressful than in front of class!! Cares about students.
Interesting class and professor. Easy to understand. Lots of examples and discussion. Study guides and tons of extra credit. Caring and funny.
Don't let it fool you that I got an A. The only explanation was I was just a good guesser. Someone needs to tell her that her personal life and opinions are not part of sociology objectives. There was nothing more miserable than going to this class. She did not speak a word that was relevant to sociology and was entirely inappropriate.
homework and quizzes are graded super easy and are a huge part of your grade. lots of opportunities for extra credit. tests are doable. nice lady. very understanding of students lives and mental health. learned a lot.
Wasn't sure what I'd get out of this class but it's been pretty useful. There's weekly homework and quizzes but they're easy As. The tests are ok and she has study guides. She really cares about you and it shows. She wants you to do well.
Dr. Stepnick was a great professor with a lot of enthusiasm. She really cares about her students. It was necessary to read before class, but this made me develop discipline. This course also taught me to be mindfully skeptical of unsupported claims, generalizations, stereotyping, and oversimplification. Glad I took it.
She is very sweet and caring, but the lectures often felt long and repetitive. Since she mentioned that the textbook essentially covers the lecture content, it sometimes made attending class feel unnecessary. She also rambles in class sometimes which makes it hard to pay attention. Her class is easy though.
This professor makes the class engaging and manageable. The weekly homework and quizzes are straightforward, and the tests are reasonable if you study the provided guides. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a caring instructor who wants students to succeed.
She's a really funny and engaging person. Her classes are usually more fun than most because she very expressive and always has a story to tell. She wants people participating but doesn't force anyone. Sometimes her classes feel excessive cause everything we get graded on is in the book. She kinda rambles sometimes and does a bit much. Overall, good.
Dr. Stepnick really helped to shape my views on gender and the things that go along with it like heteronormativity. Without this class, I'm not sure I would have the understanding of the world that I do now.
