He is pretty good. He's really into chemistry and likes teaching it. The material is not that easy but he tries to help you understand the best he can. He's not the greatest at answering questions, but overall a pretty decent teacher. I like how he does demos too.
Does a good job at explaining topics. Sometimes ran out of time to finish lectures. Practice on your own and in discussion is necessary. Lot's of people complained about this course, but they likely weren't using all resources that were available. With a few more years of experience, I expect him to be a very good (also funny) professor.
Had him for a lab, it was very unorganized and he was never clear about what we were supposed to be doing.
I thought my high school AP chem teacher was bad, but Prof. Andino is on another level. He is always unorganized in lecture, often repeating the same basic concepts over and over, when there are a lot more difficult topics to cover. Test and quiz questions come out of nowhere, and he's a master of expectingyou to study one thing and apply another.
His can't explain relevant information. During lecture he will go over one problem which will take the majority of the time. He often repeats the same simple concepts over and over. The homework and tests are nothing like what is gone over in lecture. He uses a previous prof's pre-lecture videos to teach most of the material. Do your best to avoid.
Really, really bad teacher. EXTREMELY unorganized. There is no structure to his class. Andino is constantly jumping all over the place.
Mock exams really help!
I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about Andino. I've gone to every lecture and paid attention to what he has said and I've been doing fine. If I was confused about something I could go to his office hours and he'd explain everything nicely. It's not his job to baby you through the material. This is college.
Andino started out really awful, but it's only his first year teaching, so I understand. He quickly adapted his lectures to fit our needs. Although he does skip around sometimes, if you pay attentions and ask questions, you'll do fine. He's very kind and open to questions during lecture.
His lectures were kind of pointless and he wasn't always clear about what he was trying to say
I actually enjoy Andino. Now that he's gotten into the groove of things, I definitely think hes a worthy professor. He does a good job of letting us know what is going to be on the exam and gives us more than enough practice material. Office hours are worthwhile too. He really tries to make sure you understand the material.
It's a bit unfortunate that I enrolled in his class. Miserably bad teacher, prepare to learn most of the material on your own. Also, there's little correlation between lectures and quiz material
Nothing learn from the class, but you need to go for participation points. Funny thing is, he gave full participation points for all students at end of the semester, ignoring the students who attended every class. Exam is not Chemistry exam but similar to the Math exam. Just take Marvile's class. She teaches better, exam is much more balanced.
He is a very disorganized teacher. He also changes the grading of the class as he goes on (he's a new teacher, this was his second semester teaching) such as making clicker points based on participation not accuracy. However, despite two of the exams and the final having 66% averages, he did not curve the class. Would not recommend.
Really disorganized and his teaching methods assumes you know certain things that he never went over. Lectures were never clear and I didn't learn anything from this class. The one positive is that his grading pretty forgiving in that I had plenty of chances to raise my grade.
Really awful teacher as of fall 2015. Practice exams Andino gives are literally from Dr. Rays class, and they are nothing like Andinos exams. Lectures are spent discussing previous days assignined "prelecure" problems. Ray gives instructional videos to help with these, Andino does not. The book is your only friend in his class.
No room for mistakes and very harsh (e.g. failed a whole lab for 800 students because of one messy balance), but passionate about the subject. On the bright side, the TAs are great.
Andino was very frustrating for me as a student. He's a nice guy, really is. But his lectures don't seem to cover his exams. I'll nearly ace the mock exams and practice lecture problems, and get a very poor exam score. The grading system is generous, but the class was a huge morale dump for me at times.
He gives you all this material to prepare for exams, and then the tests are a complete blindside. Don't expect a curve on these ridiculous exams either. He believes it's better to "curve the class at the end". Hope you're okay with the class average on the exams being a failing grade. Everyone says the textbook is essential, yet its not required.
One of the worst professors I've ever had at UIUC. Nice guy, really approachable, and knows the material, but he is a terrible teacher. Practice exams are nothing like the real exam. Lectures are terribly organized, spends 30 minutes reviewing and then rushing through important material. The exams do not coincide well with lecture either. BEWARE!!!
Professor Andino was a very intuitive professor who knew what he was talking about all the time. On the other hand, we noticed that he had a hard time communicating his vast knowledge unless we went to office hours. Overall, very nice lecturer.
Andino's lectures are not very informative as he tends to go through his lecture slides which he posts online afterwards. He will send emails reminding you of due dates for online quizzes and such which is helpful if you miss a lecture. Office hours are very frequent and very helpful for specific questions. Take Andino
He's a great person, and loves to help, but lectures are boring. The first exam is pretty easy, the second one is really hard, and the third was alright. I like the structure of Andino's class better than Ray's, but I like how Ray does more practice problems in class. If you can, take Ray, because Kell for organic chem is the worst teacher ever.
Andino was super nice and wanted to help when students asked questions, but he was not a good lecturer. He was so confusing during lectures and I could understand maybe 60% of lectures. We always had homework on stuff we didn't learn yet and exams were tough.
Absolutely terrible lecturer. Be prepared to read chemwiki his sldeshows make no sense. lectures are pointless
Andino is a great guy but his lectures are very boring and almost seemingly pointless to go to. Tests are very hard. He gives practice exams, but they are from another teacher and are nothing like his exams.
lectures are very confusing and not worth going, his exams and quizzes are 100X harder than homework and what is discussed in class
Professor Andino is a great guy. He's really nice and you can tell that he cares about his students. Go to office hours!
Before taking this class, I heard so many bad things about Andino, but they are all wrong! He is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. He is always available for office hours and wants all of his students to succeed. The exams are challenging but definitely manageable by attending his review sessions and going to office hours! TAKE HIM!
Andino is passionate about the subject and really wants you to learn. That being said, he is very available and helpful during office hours. Lectures are generally pretty interesting, but not always very easily understood. Tests are usually harder than homework, but they're still manageable. Overall, would definitely recommend!
HE IS THE ALL TIME WORST. I HAVE LEARNED NOTHING. NOTHING IN HIS LECTURES IS IN THE HOMEWORK HE ASSIGNS OR THE WORKSHEETS IN DISCUSSION. DROP OUT.
Just soso
Really bad at explaining concepts, so you practically have to teach yourself everything. Tests, quizzes, and homework don't often reflect what you concentrated on in lecture so sometimes you'll have many questions on a test covering a topic you went over very briefly in lecture. TAs not great either.
Lectures are pretty much useless. He goes extremely slowly at the start and rushes through all the slides during the end. Moreover, the slides are pretty much the textbook. His tests are pretty hard as just 2 mistakes can get you down to a B.
I didn't go to any lectures because slides are online and he doesn't teach much. I taught myself everything without the textbook; I only used the assignments and Google. Tests are hard but padded by all the hw. The timed quizzes are representative of the questions you can expect on the midterms. In all, turned out better than I thought it would.
Andino really cares about teaching, but is more of a "it happens because it happens" kind of guy. See him after class if you really want to understand the meaning of something. Overall, lectures are not super useful and tests are pretty straightforward.
If you need to take Chem and only are in it for the GPA, take Andino. His tests I found were much easier than what i've heard from other students with different professors. Also, you can retake exams online and gain back 30% of what you missed. Not a bad lecturer either, you still need to work for your grade though.
Honestly, Andino wasn't that great of a teacher. He constantly rushed lectures towards the end, extremely disorganized, and not great at explaining. He knows his material, so if you go to office hours, he is useful one on one. Otherwise, you learn the material by pure repetition or by actually using the book (which I didn't)
Dr. Adino is very passionate about teaching the students and gives great examples in class to help us understand the concepts. He might be a little disorganized and uptight, but he is always there to help the students. He also makes ice cream for the highest scoring section and student, so that is a plus :)
Andino was an okay teacher. All the lecture material was put online and material that was covered in lecture was in the book. For me, the book explained things a lot better than the demos. Clicker questions were worth points and were not extra credit, so I went to lecture just to get clicker points.
made chemistry enjoyable. amazing professor and person. make use of office hours he really wants to help you. retake quizzes helped boost exam grades and exams are pretty straightforward. take andino
Andino is a great guy! He truly cares about making his students understand the material. If you care about the topic and show that you want to put effort into his class, then he will put effort into making sure you do well. Don't go on your phone/laptop in class bc he will roast you for it and it's disrespectful. I have learned so much from him
When in lecture he doesn't know how to teach Sometimes I leave more confused then when I walked in. Also will kick you out of lecture if he sees you on your phone.
Need to go to class to get iClicker points (not extra credit). Barely gives any review materials to prepare for midterms/final. Good luck if you screw up on one midterm because most of your grade depends on it. Lectures are useless and homework has nothing to do with what is on the exam. Do not take his class.
Very knowledgable and explains concepts very thoroughly. Sometimes falls behind in lecture and you have to teach yourself. Some curve balls on exams. Overall good professor though
This man used a SCOOTER BOARD in class!
Lecture is clicker but its only two percent of total grade. Lecture is a good resource but you so a lot of developing on your own. Homework is good practice, it creates a bigger understanding. Midterms are repetitive, and are very easy to fail so its important to double check your work (cbtf). Do all homework or you'll kill your grade.
I was not a fan of the online exams. There were 15 questions with 50 min given. I did not do well on the second exam because I was rushed for time which affected my grade by a lot. The material was't bad, but it was frustrating when topics that were brushed over in class were the ones that were on the exam. Would not take this class again.
Unlike most chemistry professors testing you on your knowledge of an overall concept, he tests on very minuscule examples that were shown in lecture for a brief moment. So even if you understand a concept you might not do well if you don't memorize every little detail of homework and lecture slides.
I read many of bad reviews about Professor Andino before taking the class and got pretty discouraged. However, after nearly finishing the semester, I am confused as to why so many people dislike him. Put in the effort and you'll get the result you want. I've learned a lot from his class. Great lecturer and very engaging.
I heard that Andino was a tough professor, but I had a great time in chem 104. I have an extremely high grade and feel like exams and homework weren't bad at all. He responded to emails quickly and answered questions well. Overall, he was very kind and wanted his classes to succeed!
Good teacher and explains things well in lecture and unlike most chem professors his exams are very straightforward and very similar to the homework. Exams are only 15 questions however so if you get a few wrong your grade drops tremendously and hes not lenient with curving or anything so be careful
Overall he was very good at teaching us the information we needed and was very accessible both through email and by having lot of office hours. He does however, make you work for all the points you get but if you do the homework, the extra credit assignment (an additional 2.5%), go to lecture, and ask questions, you should do well.
This guy gets pissy for every little thing. I've never seen such a frail personality that greatly affects classroom instruction the way I saw here.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. With school being online you would think he would try to help but no this man is literally an awful professor who should not have a job
Honestly speaking, hes not a bad lecturer, but in terms of exam grading he was horrendous. The semester I had him the exam average was poor - below 56% I believe. When asked if there would be a curve, he stated that some people got 100% and said that since some students got those grades everybody can. No curve and can be rather petty.
Absolutely horrid professor. Gives the easiest homework and then throws extremely difficult quizzes and exams at you. Class test averages regularly score at or below 50%. Answers he gives in lectures are poor and lack depth. Never have I had such an awful experience. Avoid at all costs.
Heard hes awful for 104 and avoiding him next semester. As for 203 he would just expect you to know when lab lecture is and never tell you when or give a schedule. Shallow depth of material but good speaker. If you have him for 203 or lab youre fine.
Andino gets a bad rep man. His lectures are directly correlated to the homework and the homework is directly correlated with exams which I think is more than what most profs even do. You can get up to 10% more on exams with the ratakes which are unproctored. Make sure to practice a lotttttt. You can tell he loves his job & chemistry, very inspiring
Lectures are very easy to follow but there is a lot of work. Honestly the fairest of UIUC chem prof. And I've taken classes with 3 of them
People believe his lectures are good. They are only good for those who have a strong understanding of chem if you dont GOOD LUCK. No real explaining of the fundamentals of each topic and seems to think his students already have an idea of the topic. Test are like prairie learn. If you need more teaching to do better TAKE RAY!!!
Rambles on during lectures and never finishes the material planned for the day so we end up rushing through it the next lecture, then repeat. Noticed several typos on exams and he forgot to provide critical information on questions. Left 2 of the same correct answer choice on the final, so it was a 50/50 guess as to which was the real one.
Dr Andino cares students a lot with lots of office hours. He presents lectures clearly with practice problems to help review and do homework. Homework and Pre-lectures are due on the last day, giving more time to finish. Exams and quizzes are tricky, but Prairie-learn tells you answers and grades immediately after finishing it. Always Practice!
My experience with Dr. Andino was good, granted I took him Spring 2021 so, my lectures were online and I chose to do Merit for the class, which gave me extra practice out of class. I would recommend doing all of the homework because the the exams are very similar and be very careful because they are only 15 questions long.
This professor explains things quite clearly in his lecture, but most (i would say 70%) of the work is done by TA. Also, the slides and other relevant resources he offers are not quite good. Well, i think he is an average professor
Andino was very helpful this semester. i met with him privately every week for personal office hours and i found that he explained topics so much better during these hours. we had great conversations that went beyond chemistry and i learned that he not only is passionate about his job but is also a great person. he truly wants everyone to pass.
Lectures are not the most useful, but you can understand the material pretty easily on your own. Easy exams where the questions are just like homework. Have exam retakes. Quizzes are collaborative Just do the homework and you will be fine.
Chem 104 is a very math heavy course which can be difficult, but there are so many resources at your disposal which helps when navigating topics. As long as you pay attention in discussion and do all of the homework you will do pretty well in the class. Lectures are pretty engaging and if you miss one they are uploaded online after.
Appeared to be on a perpetual power trip. Hostile learning environment. In 2019, he singled out 1 student on their phone in a 300 person lecture to reprimand his intelligence, accuse him of distracting everyone, and yell at him to get out. Nobody noticed the student until Andino went out of his way to take several minutes putting him in place.
If you're on your phone he calls you out in the middle of class & asks for your name & writes it down so he can keep track. If you get called out more than once, you have to leave lecture. If someone is choosing to be on their phone instead, that's on them. Don't interrupt the entire class for something so small. This isn't kindergarten.
Andino recently changed the exam structure so that there were no second attempts (no partial credit). The content is easy to understand, but because you have to input the answer yourself, if you get one step wrong or input a wrong number, you just lose 8 or 6 points. No curve either, just a retake that doesn't do much except add a few points.
Please for the love of God choose a different professor, if the average on a exam is a 34% you know something is wrong. Sure, you can say the students our lazy but a day before the final exam my man straight up removed a the whole course so you couldn't even study he fixes it (without providing an explanation) and then it happens again!
GOOD LUCK TO FUTURE STUDENTS! This class had me contemplating withdrawing from school and checking myself into a mental institution. Be prepared to immerse yourself into the wonderful world of self-hatred and low self esteem. Unless you have nothing else to do but spend your entire day at the CLC then don't expect anything better than a C.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Averages for all the exams have been Fs. He refuses to implement curves because points should be earned which is fair BUT when your averages are BELOW 30%, there is a problem. Up until the final, the TAs told us that less than 1/3 of the class was even PASSING. I will probably have to retake the class bc of him.
He isn't as bad as people are saying. The lectures are not that great but the exams are exactly like the homework so I always felt prepared. Plus, the retake he gives is super helpful to make up extra points since there is no time limit and you take it at home.
Since he changed the structure of the class, our whole class did terribly compared to previous semesters. Averages were around 50% or below, and the retakes only added on a few more points. The grading of the class was very confusing and caused a lot of uncertainty. The PrarieLearn grading system was unreliable and frustrating.
Andino is a competent instructor who can convey the information well if you have a solid foundation in chem. I struggled more with this class than any other course I've taken in my college career thus far, and while I was able to get out with a passing score, I recognize now how heavily it affected my mental health. I would avoid if possible.
Andino is not a bad professor but the class did feel unnecessarily tough. I get it's a weed-out but more/better resources could have been provided to help students succeed in this class.
he is a solid lecturer and helpful + accessible at office hours. but exam avgs were insanely low. he provides ways to make up pts but cbtf exams where u don't get partial credit for ur work makes the exams unfair. he would also include questions on the midterms that the syllabus said wouldn't be covered in that midterm (orgo in electrochem exam)
There is homework and prelecture video due every lecture that you HAVE TO WATCH to understand what is going on during lecture. All the tests are in the CBTF and he makes the tests representative of the homeworks and practice tests. You really have to pay attention, but he offers 5% extra credit overall and lets you earn back points on tests.
I really don't understand why andino has such a low rating. Exams were exactly like the HW and lectures were always entertaining, so I don't think exam averages really reflected his way of teaching.Extra credit also helps if you don't do too well on an exam. Definitely recommend andino for 104.
Andino's class was very easy if you understand chemistry and are willing to sit down and grind a lab report on mediocre dining hall food and willpower. Hopefully you get a good TA because its pretty much luck of the draw and will be the main impact of your grade.
Great professor, difficult exams. His lectures were very entertaining! I would definitely take him again. Be prepared to spend half your time studying though.
Great professor - cares about his students. Make use of your TA's office hours because they're the ones that grade your reports. Lab reports take anywhere between 5 and 12 hours and there's one due every week
Doesn't teach content well. Tests are not too difficult. Be prepared to self-learn most content
Basically all the scores come from the lab report, and this score is determined by your TA. Therefore, if you get a good TA, you will think this course is okay. The content of his lectures is average. Many key points are different from what the TA wants to see. If you encounter any difficulties, ask your TA for help, not Andino.
I actually really liked him. Andino is a rlly good professor. His test averages are low, but the tests are not weighted that much in the gradebook so people usually get a letter grade ish or more in the class than their test average. Take notes on the prelecture videos so during class you can add small things he talks about. SO much extra credit.
Andino is really a nice guy but unfortunately the material he teaches can be difficult to grasp. This semester all his exams were exactly like the homework problems and its very easy to memorize how to do these problems then apply that to the exams.
Dr. Andino is very approachable and caring. Exams are very much like the homework, practice homeworks, and practice exams. Go to office hours! Don't wait until the last week to get the bonus, I beg (it gets very crowded). The final exam is 30%, which brought my grade from an A to a B+, so prioritize it if you could.
Dr. Andino is the professor you want to take CHEM 104 with. His lectures are entertaining and thought provoking, while still addressing the core principles and concepts of the material at hand. He also provides you with all the resources you need to succeed. Additionally, his tests are very fair. There are no trick questions.
Andino was a very good chemistry professor and spoke in a way that made understanding the topics very clear. The tests can be kind of difficult, but they are very similar in style to the practice problems/homework that he gives on PraireLearn and the practice reviews that take place in discussion.
Professor Andino is a good lecturer and cares about his students. He assigns fair and manageable homework. However his exam grading is unfair. CBTF with no partial credit, his exam averages are 50s-60s. He said there'd likely be a curve for the final if everyone did bad (average was same as the midterms), but he didn't curve. Grade went from A to B
His teaching ability is exactly average, not remarkably amazing or awful. If you pay attention to the prelectures/lectures, you should understand the brunt of the material. There is no partial credit on the exams which can be tough considering the very large or very small numbers you are calculating.
Andino is a pretty good professor. He is able to lecture well and is accessible outside of class frequently during office hours. His tests are challenging due to being in the CBTF and offering no partial credit, but they aren't impossible to do. No major complaints, nothing done exceptionally well. Just overall a pretty good professor.
Everything he taught was disconnected, I never knew what was going on and I never missed a lecture or discussion. His office hours aren't worth it, you'll get one question in and he will barely help you and move on to the next person and never come back to you. On the other hand, he loves discussing things with his students and is very supportive.
I would pray before an exam that CBTF would burn down with me in it
Tests were some what hard and no partial credit was given for the first two tests. He switched it mid way so that we'd get partial credit for exam 3 and the final. He is not that good at explaining concepts, and makes me confused on content that I already knew.
Do not take him. His exams are not similar to homework like everyone says. He seems like a nice guy but never answers emails when you need help. He does not care and does not care if you do bad. Please avoid if you want a grade higher than a B.
first two tests there were no partial credit 1/4MCQ and avg was less than a 60 with a little to no curve. the only thing that got me through that class were prayers and substances on the weekends when I wasn't at the CBTF trying not to $%!. couldn't answer ? directly in lecture and would often get his own ? wrong during class, VERY disorganized.
His exams were very difficult, and all of his averages were failing. He does not provide a curve either which makes it even more difficult. The homework and pre lecture assignments help on the exams. If you can get a different professor do so.
