THIS IS THE BEST CLASS EVER!!! Take it take it take it! It's kind of an inconvenient time (7-9:30) but it flies by! You won't be disappointed!!!
He is CrAzY, so entertaining!! I didn't feel like I was in class and he is very upfront about what will be on his exams. Fun Class
This is awsome class, taught by an awsome teacher. Really entertaining, upfront about demands for papers and exams. Great stories. Really knows his stuff.
Great teacher! He's a Juliard graduate and frequently plays piano in his class (very well). Very funny and exciting classes. Try to get at least one class with Andre Gribou during your studies at OU!
A fun energetic teacher who knows how to keep to keep things interesting.
very interesting class, wonderful teacher. NOT an easy 'A'. you actually have to study for his exams, be prepared to work, even tho its only a 3 credit class one day a week
Very interesting class, but not an easy A. Took a very long time to grade papers and midterm, but that can be expected in a class of 250 people.
Entertaining class, the guy knows his stuff. However, he does come off as being very smug at times. You must study the songs to do well on his tests, and do not bother to buy the book. Fun class if you like feeling clueless about music.
Best class ever. He is so awesome. If you are interested in the subject, it will be great. If not, it will probably suck because it's definitely not an easy 'A'. Lots of studying necessary. It's so worth it though. I'd stay in his class for 3 hours everyday if I could.
Andre is an incredible piano player/composer and is one of the best teachers at OU

ANDRE GRIBOU IS AMAZING! History of Rock is the best class I've ever taken.
Best class I've taken at Ohio. He managed to keep classes interesting for a full 2.5 hours (even when he said "historical perspective"). Take the class if you want some great insight to where popular music came from
Dr. Gribou makes class so much fun! It's not an easy class though. You have two tests and a paper so make them count!
Class is very interesting and it is amazing how much he knows his stuff. If you love learning about music this is the class for you. The only complaints I have is that he takes forever to grade papers and you never get your papers back. You basically will never know what you have in that class until you get your report card.
How can you not love this guy? A great teacher that knows the material and knows how to get students interested in musical styles. Not an easy class, but it won't kill you, either.
BEST PROF @ OU! He has studied at amazing places, played with the best and is still so down to earth. He doesn't want you to puke up info, but really learn stuff that will stay with you. He knows we are kids that don't have to be in class so he tries to make you want to be there and it works! Someone I could learn from over and over again.
Really hard exams where you have to know the whole name (spelled right) of 10-20 pieces of music. Also have to complete a couple concert reviews.
he is a great professor--he seems to know everything and he is funny. he has no problem going off on a tangent and answering questions. you listen to a lot of music and class goes by fast. he is more interested in you being interested and understanding than in testing that you know facts. he is older but still oddly attractive
Andre rocks! He's been my private piano teacher for 6 years and it's been the best experience of my life. You should totally take his history of rock or musical styles class. OU is extremely lucky to have this talented man.
Gribou knows rock and he makes class interesting even for people that don't. But as an instructor his policies are very strict, he isn't helpful, and class material has no direct correlation to the tests. Class is absolutely manadory but nothing you learn is class is on the exam; the exam is all outside study.
Experimental course so he kept changing his mind about assignments halfway thru... kind of unclear. Far too many songs to know for the final considering he only posted them 6 days before the test. Fun in class, though.
What class did the previous reviewer take? If you pay attention and take decent notes, you hardly have to do outside study, except listen to the songs!Every question on the exam is about subjects that were a big part of the class lectures!Class is mandatory because it only meets once a week for 9 weeks. There are always students asking questions af
There isn't enough room on here to express how much I love him! I had him for three classes and loved all of them. He makes things that I wouldn't normally care about so interesting. He's an amazing pianist. He has so much knowledge about music it's astounding! I can't get enough of him! As long as you go to class you'll be fine
Fun class, you listen to a lot of great music, some I'd never heard before, you only get up to the late 70's/early 80's though so I suggest taking MUS 224 for the full experience!
Goes more into depth that 124, more prog rock and other weird stuff like that, I was expecting like 80's hair bands, metal, and maybe get into 90's grunge and alternative but we ended up spending two weeks listening to Yanni and monks... it was still ok but the final was harder than I expected
One word AMAZING! He is great. I loved his class so much. Every class is different and interesting. I took the class thinking it would be really easy, which isn't the case. You have to work, but it really isn't bad. He keeps you interested and as long as you go to class you will know your stuff. The only time I ever use my text book is for a test.
Gribou I'm sure is a great guy but as a teacher NO. His writing assignments are very abstract with no format. The only good thing is you get to listen to some good music. But he didn't keep my attention and his jokes are lame. DONT BUY THE BOOK a complete waste of money, we didn't use it at all. I wanted to kill my self after every class
Amazing amazing amazing. So funny & nice. We didn't use the textbook. You don't even need to take notes because the exams are just memorizing songs. He's older than my parents but I think every girl had a crush on him by the end of class...
I abo****ely LOVED this class. We listened to great music every day, and I learned a lot about rock and roll. Gribou is an amazing teacher, and he really makes sure that you understand everything that he is talking about before moving on. If you have a question, ask it. He loves it. DONT BUY THE BOOK. You'll get all your info from his notes.
He was an interesting and articulate teacher. I had little appreciation for popular music in general at the time, and this deepened my understanding of U.S. Rock and Roll.
Smart, talented, sexy man --an ingratiating professor with a fine sense of humor. Class was interesting and engaging -- great listening and great fun. One of the best courses I've taken so far ... highly recommended!
although he is in fact very knowledgeable on the subject of rock history, he is not as cool as he thinks he is. he thinks he is esteban for the piano, he is not. going to class is mandatory, but completely pointless. ive learned nothing but 'useless information' and his grading is ridiculously hard. he needs to realize its a 100 level class
The class itself is interesting but can be difficult. You have a midterm which is worth 40% of your grade, a paper 10% and the final is worth 50%. He is a talented man who loves what he is teaching. Only take this class if you care about the history of rock. If your looking for an easy A youve come to the wrong Prof
I loveddd this class. Definitely don't take it if you're looking for an easy A because it is NOT an easy A, but I thought this class and the professor were both fascinating. The midterm and final aren't that hard if you actually study.
This class seemed like itd be awesome even though I heard it wasnt an easy A. I love music but the music we listen to is horrible. All he does is play Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the piano. Hes a great player but its annoying. I honestly never thought that rock music could be miserable but apparently 1950's rock was. Stay away from Andre
This professor is interesting and insightful but his class is far to hard for the 3 credits you receive. The grades are based upon a 40% midterm 50% final and 10% paper As of Fall 2009. The final is a list of songs he plays a bit of each and you must identify Title, Artist, Release date and whether it is a cover or not. Way too intense IMO.
The only bad thing about this prof is that he teaches at OU where students expect A's for showing up. Intense, fun&informed. You listen to Berry,Holly,Elvis,L.Richard and so many others. What's wrong with some of these people? He demonstrated Over Rainbow twice for 30 sec!He deserves to be at a better school, one where students actually like to read.

I wouldnt say this is an easy A but if you put a little work into it you'll be fine. I am not a huge fan of rock music, but he tells you exactly which songs to identify so it's pretty easy. Even though it's 2.5 hours long, he's a really entertaining guy and makes sarcastic comments. I'd highly recommend him. Don't buy the book; there's no homework.
Class is way too hard for a 100 level class. Rock and roll has never been so boring. Attendance is mandatory but completely useless. Went into it thinking it would be cool, ended up being my hardest and most dreaded class.
Really interesting class. Only two exams and a paper. Midterm you have to write 2 long essays and ID some songs. Final is all song IDs. Take good notes until the midterm because you'll need that info for the essays. After it doesn't really matter since you just need to know the songs for the final. Book is cheap, but don't bother buying it.
Not Hard at all you just have to spend sometime studying like a week before you take the test, most classes tend to drag on though.
aundre is awesome! he cares about his students, and know what he's teaching about. you won't regret taking this class, or any of his! it's worth your time. he makes class interesting and exciting. and he always has an impressive story to tell
Way too hard for a 100 level class. Imagine taking Study of Rock at Harvard except the teacher is Santa Clause in skinny jeans.
He is an awesome teacher! Very FUNNY and is a boss at the piano. Class can get dull at times, but he will always try to get the class involved or excited by blasting some music or playing something on his piano - plus, class is only one day a week. He gives the essay questions a week before the exam so there is no reason to not be prepared fo
Excellent prof! Amazingly talented and super entertaining!
Not a fan of his, it seems like much of his lecture was rambling. Class is mandatory and I got the impression he thinks very highly of himself. Class was long but manageable
Gribou is definitely now one of my favorite professors at OU. He has a passion for what he teaches and is very helpful outside of class. He actively engages the entire class room and can be pretty funny. He's very laid back and is a master at the piano. TAKE HIS CLASS you won't regret it!
I don't understand anyone with any grievances about this man. He always manages to keep his lectures interesting for an entire period and not only exudes knowledge but also passion. Loved every second of class. And if you're complaining about listening tests, then you're just lazy because they're the easiest thing a college professor can give you.
A phenomenal course, and a phenomenal professor. He threatens you with the textbook a lot but I never used it. I listen to a lot of 60s rock music, so I came in with a bit of an advantage, but if you pay attention in class and listen to the playlists he gives you shouldn't have any trouble passing.
I personally loved this class. Professor Gribou is excellent and I highly recommend him as a professor
This was the most fun class I've taken at OU so far. Dr. Gribou makes the material very interesting. And the listening to music a lot in class made the experience that much better. He is very knowledgeable in his field. His tests are easy, but graded stiffly. But overall, fantastic professor!
Great guy, hilarious. Hates electronics & will call you out if you're using them. Lectures are so long, it's insane. This is NOT AN EASY A. I seriously had to study for these exams & I got points off for spelling. You write a paper and instructions are vague. Midterm seemed easy, but was not. Do not take if you're looking for a blow off class!!
Gribou is passionate about the subject, knows exactly what he's talking about. Go to class, once a week. Listening test (identify song title and artist), midterm (write a few sentences about each of 25-30 people or recording studios that he goes over thoroughly in class), final (listening test). He is engaging, very sarcastic. Recommend this class.
If you aren't particularly interested in history of Rock n' roll then this class isnt going to be easy. He is a funny and passionate guy. He makes class really fun by playing piano. There was two listening tests (not as easy as they sound) and one written test. Make sure you study alot or its hard to bring your grade up, other than that, good class
Such a fun class but make sure you care about the subject.
He is an engaging guy and his lecture for Rock and Roll part 2 is really upbeat and fast paced
Professor Gribou is very passionate about rock n roll history and makes the class so fun! I planned on dropping after the first day, since it was a Monday night class, but he was so interesting and fun that it didn't matter at all that we were there until 9:30pm on a Monday. This is NOT a cake class. You will have to study. Take it seriously!
Professor Gribou is my favorite professor that I have had so far. He is very knowledgeable in the music field and shows that he knows what he is talking about. He is also very passionate about music and expresses that through his lectures. I would definitely request everyone to take his class!
Skipping class will drop your grade 1/3. Lectures are somewhat long but he is an awesome professor who is very passionate about this, which makes the class bearable.
LOVED HIM! My favorite professor so far. Gribou is super engaging and obviously very passionate about the material. He's absolutely hilarious, super sarcastic and keeps the class interesting. Must do the readings and study if you want to do well. Not a difficult class but not an easy A. Don't skip and pay attention, he will call you out for it.
Most entertaining professor I've had yet in any class.
Fantastic Professor overall, is very passionate about the content in his class, the course itself is very interesting (if you're a fan of rock n roll or music in general). The course requires a textbook that covers some of the information of the course but mostly lecture based, yet he makes learning the information fun! Would definitely take again
Pretty funny which makes class entertaining. After a while classes started to drag on and he kind of became a jerk. Calls you out for being on phone/laptop in front of whole class, makes the class way harder than it needs to be but its really not too bad. Tough grader, takes points off for spelling. If you're not passionate about rock dont take it
This class is really entertaining and a ton of fun but do not take it if you plan on slacking off and taking it just because it sounds fun. He really makes you work for your grade. Very passionate about the subject which makes the 2 hour lectures worth it but he never tested over any in class material even with mandatory attendance.
This class and part one of History of Rock Music are easily my two favorite classes that I have taken. He is very passionate about the subject and it shows in his lectures. One midterm and the final were both listening exams. I recommend this class to everyone, regardless of major.
This dude teaches with a style meant for people growing up in the 60s. the lack of powerpoints is huge considering you cannot study outside of class, what was exactly discusssed in class. Also the old-age style of teaching makes him use the chalk board, which you obviously cant read or follow. Hes very picky and will admit that out loud in class.
DO NOT take this class if you want to LEARN about the history of rock, if you already know about the history then take it! Should be good for you, but I took it to learn something and I havent learned a single thing.
he expects us to know who and what hes talking about and I easily get lost and leaves me uninterested and lost for the next 2 hours. I studied and read for the test, failed. This class is demanding! It is not a class Id take again considering this has nothing to do with my major and yet it is the most demanding and also the one Im failing.
You don't have to buy the book which is a big plus, however this is not an easy credit. I took this as an easy A for fine arts and it was not easy. You will have to put in actual work for this class. You can't skip a class, NO ELECTRONICS ALLOWED.
I took this because I thought it would be easy, I was wrong. This was my hardest class last semester. However, as someone who likes the history of rock, it was a very enjoyable 2 hr, once a week. Dont take it with him if you are looking for an easy A. And study really hard if youre looking to pass, hes a very tough grader.
Professor Gribou clearly has a passion for this class and for teaching. The lecture is entertaining and educational. The writing assignments get you thinking and allow you to put your knowledge to work. Pay attention to the grading criteria for the assignments, a good grade must be earned and 100%'s are not handed out to everyone.
I tried to give this professor the benefit of the doubt with this class being online, Although Andre is a very smart man, all assignments- no matter how much effort you put into them- he rudely comments about why your opinion on the matter is wrong. I found myself trying to go along with his thoughts on the material rather than my own.
This man is very interesting. He has a clear passion for music, but this is not an easy A class. You have to put in the time and effort to watch his multiple video lectures, 25+ pages of reading a week, and take time to write out discussions and journals. Sometimes it felt that my opinion on things was wrong because it did not agree with his.
Tons of homework and reading. He grades insanely hard and marks points off just for having a different opinion than him. The journals and discussions have a minimum 3-5 sentence requirement, but I realized about halfway through the course that you'll only get an A on them if you write 4+ paragraphs. Also, he has a different grade scale and its ruff
In person he used to be great. Due to covid the class is now online and he is not happy about it. Grading is HARSH. If it says minimum 4 sentences write at least 2 paragraphs to get maybe a B+. Quizes are not from lectures but from opinionated articles he posts. If you follow the posted rubric you will get a C and a B if your option agrees with his
This man creates assignments to make you feel stupid. He thinks you should be living and breathing music while listening to his upwards of two hours of lecturing and reading endless pages, only to make quizzes that are made to trick you. Don't make the mistake of taking this class if you are a non-music major.
Good luck getting perfect scores on any discussion posts. You could answer anything perfectly and not get all the points. Always wanted more than 100% for everything and never explained why you got partial credit!
Thought this would be an easier course load as it is offered online. This course is an 1000 level course be prepared to do 3 times the work. Lecture heavy, no power points. When lecturing he uses language that is complex and if you don't have a stronger knowledge of music don't bother taking this course.,
I took this class because I like the genre of music. The lectures are super interesting but the quizzes are quite difficult.
Great professor. Pretty funny.
A lot of people tell you to beware of MUS 1240 with Gribou, but if you put in a tiny bit of effort, it isn't difficult to get an okay grade. There is a lot of material to get through in each module, but the due dates are very spaced out, which allows ample time to get through everything. The recorded lectures are very engaging and informative.
I actually learned less from him after taking the course than before. He just word-blabs with piano performances with a turn like he's about to bow. I wish he said anything intelligent, relevant to the subject, useful or even just entertaining. He can't even answer questions! His class is undoubtedly the worst taught course I have ever taken.
Andre was a very difficult professor; did not provide grading criteria, did not utilize Blackboard for grading or assignment feedback, and said we would only be graded on assignment participation as long as we did the work. There are other things specifically surrounding the way he lectures and being very unclear when asking the students questions.
I absolutely loved Prof. Gribou. His lectures are long but interesting, gives the class new playlists every week. He IS a tough grader, but only if you do the bare minimum. Quizzes are tough for sure, but get good grades on everything else and they don't matter too much. Half sem class if you take it online. Take the class if you like to write.
Lectures were very informative and you can really tell that he is passionate about music as a whole. He can be a little tough with grading, but he gives extremely clear feedback so as long as you are putting an effort in you'll do fine. Quizzes were a little tricky but even if you don't do well on them it's easy to end with a good grade.
