One of the best - he brings history alive. Great speaker, take questions, shows relavant videos and encourages class disscussion. Exams are usually short essay, but he makes it clear what you need to know.
Amazing teacher, amazing lecture. You will leave feeling the world of history bearing down on your shoulders and you will love it! Very hard grader, essays have to be perfect to get a B+ but well worth it. He loves his colorful shirts too!

The hardest class I have taken so far but it was also my favorite. Very hard grader but an awsome teacher.
The quintessential history professor; he brings the material to life with passion rarely found in a junior college setting and is skilled in engaging the class in meaningful dialogue and analysis.
This teacher is horrible. I am an Honor Student with a 4.0 GPA last semester. The reviews he gives for his essays are pathetic. He is terribly unlear. If you want or need to take HIST 21, take another teacher. He gives good students bad grades and thinks it is amusing.
Very nice professor, engaging and easy to talk to.
Awesome instructor! Not an easy course, but wonderfully informative. Real history comes alive. He expects alot of his students, but if you study hard, take good notes, and pay attention -- no problem.Very available and supportive.
He is a nice guy, however this class sucks. He is horribly unclear with what he wants, he grades way to hard all becuase "his class transfers to berkley". I say who cares, he takes a somewhat interesting history curriculum and turns it into boring torture. Don't take!!!
One of the best teachers I have experienced. Great lecturer. Tough on the essay grading. Brush up on your writing skills. This course is very eye opening and is a more realistic way to teach history. He made it fun and made you want to know more. He's easy on the eyes too.
Has ways of making you think about what happened and how it came through with some or no change to today. One gets angry when thinking of Columbus day and other celebrations....Columbus was immorral. Who would celebrate. Mr Larue has issues about "race" and feels it needs to stay defined....
An excellent teacher, I have never been so interested in a history class before.Essay writting was pretty hard since they had to be completed in class. All in all I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to get a different perspective about history than what we have been getting over the yrs.
pros...doesn't take attendance and no hw besides reading. cons...grade is based on 4 in class essays that are very hardly graded. he's not very clear with what he wants. final is very heavily weighted and my grade was heavily dependent on how i did on it.
i don't like this class because i personally don't like his style. he's nice and the material is interesting, but i get bored when teachers do nothing but just sit there and lecture. he rarely gives visuals, and we do NO assignments aside from essay exams. not a style i can easily work with
This class is for those interested in real history - as in the Truth. You should also be a good writer (taken Eng1A already)as your grade is based on essay exams. If you want to expand your mind take LaRue, if you want an easy no brainer class look elsewhere.
Andre LaRue is the greatest teacher in the history of teachers. He is straight forward about what you need to know to pass his class. You can get an A with out reading your book as long as you take good notes, and can write a coherent essay. He grades hard but he's fair. He doesn't usually use mult choice, just essays, mult choice is for idiots
Mr. Larue is the best history teacher I've ever had. He is very clear on what you need to know for the essay exams. The best thing to do is to take good notes and study from those notes.
what a jerk ! so egotistical !
Fantastic history teacher, probably one of the best SRJC has to offer. His lectures are extremely informative and interesting. His tests are very fair, so you really can't lose.

Pompous, relativist teacher that will downgrade a full letter grade on term papers if the bibliography format is incorrect. Can be an interesting lecturer, but a tenured professor with no personal interest in his students. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
LaRue is one of the best teachers i have ever had. he is so interesting and he knows so much. He got me so interested in cultural history. his class is hard but this is college. just study and ask him questions, he is very helpful.
I enjoyed his class back in 98. I remember reading "The Olone way". He made the class interesting and enjoyable.
This guy is funny, interesting, intelligent, one of the best history teachers I've had. He's definately not for everyone...your grade is based almost entirely on exams. Recommended if you enjoy the subject of history.
I enjoyed his class. I think he is very good teacher and very interesting.
This guy is a great teacher. He's fun, clear, well spoken, & makes the class interesting. Grades are only on the tests but the tests aren't that hard. And if you have 70% avg or higher on the 1st 3 tests, you don't have to take the final if you're happy with a C or better. If you decide to take the final, it will only improve the grade.
He has good films to understand the history of races. He's a great storyteller.
Andre is an awesome teacher. He knows his history inside and out. We explored a number of topics and issues. The final grade is the total of four in class essays. The class requires a lot of note taking and some dednse reading but you learn a lot and the class is way fun. He is always in a good mood and happy to answer any questions.
I am American NDN. We had major disagreements about the text. Author has the "OFFICIAL" American NDN history covered. What if the writer's wrong or talking out his A@@? R white anthros or authors ALWAYS right about other peeps? NO! I was very insulted that a white book author's word is taken for gospel when I'm telling Larue the truth. What a dis!
Wasn't looking forward to this class but he made it fun and enjoyable and I learned alot from him. Just make sure you remember details for essays.
He is a bit of a snob and a pompous ass at times, but he really is knowledgeable and an excellent lecturer. This class should be required of all students. if you aren't a blinking idiot, you will take away a whole new perception of this glorious country of ours.
I took a bunch of classes with Andre - love him! He is a hard grader but the topics are so interesting I didn't mind the loads of notes. He's got a great personality. The only thing I didn't like about him is this disfluency he has where he says "quite frankly" all the time. But that is so minor when you consider how great he is at teaching!
Andre LaRue is by far the best History professor I've ever had. He knows his stuff, and will help anyone who asks! Mostly essay tests, and make sure you add lots of details!
Definitely a history class for those that do not like history. His class made me start to actually like history! A. is a fabulous teacher- very clear and helpful if you have any confusion. No assignments or projects other than doing about forty to fifty pages of reading per week. The essay exams are not that harsh- only a bit daunting at first.
Professor Larue is a great teacher. He is somewhat of a hard grader but if you keep up with the reading and make sure that your tests (which are all essays) are detailed than you should not have a prob in attaining a high grade. At the end of the semester he gave us the option (if we had a 70% or better) to not take the final!!!! TAKE THIS CLASS!
i really really enjoyed his class. there was one book that was no that helpful. but he is a great lecture teacher. in my opinion he does grade really hard. i tried really hard and studdied really hard but i still was getting low "c" grades. so he does need to lighten up on how he grades but by far the best teacher and great personality
I really enjoyed his class. His lectures were fun and interesting. He really made me interested in the reading. Essays were not hard if you read. I recommend him to everyone I know!
LaRue is fair, knowledgable about his subject and a great lecturer. A+ for clarity. If you score high on the first three exams you get to take a walk on the final. Good Luck.
Wow. That was a tough class. One of the greatest teachers ever, he really pushes you, and is a vault of knowledge on U.S. history. His lectures are absolutely fascinating.
Extremely intelligent with an exceptional interest in his subject. Class is based only upon essay tests, but if you listen to lectures (although they are sometimes tidious) and read the books, you shouldn't have any problems. Just stuff as many details as possible into your essays, and you'll do fine.
Larue is very smart and obviously loves history. The lectures are a bit boring and the grade is based on only test. If you like your grade you dont have to take the final. The key to getting go grades on the test is going to the books website at the back of each chapter and using the study guide. It made the tests so much easier. Good class.
Amazing lecturer. He'll give the topic for the day, start somewhere that seems wholly unrelated, but by the end of class you understand perfectly and are well-informed about what really happened in our country's history. He even manages to make questions flow with his lectures. Very detail-oriented essay tests, but not too bad. Amazing professor!
Very smart man, and good teacher. Class is pretty hard though. If you read everything your supposed to and take notes everyday it should be pretty easy to do test. Grade is based soely on test, and the test are only essay questions.
this class is tough you will have to take good lecture notes and read the book to pass the class however larue is a good professor although he swears a lot
Larue was an amazing professor. I didnt start out the class very enthusiastic but the way he lectured made listening and taking notes WAY easier. He would start a lecture from some random place but by the end of class he will have tied it to the topic and you'll realize you FULLY understand it. Prepare for tests and you'll do fine.
I would never take him again. Grades essays ridicioulsly hard and wants unimaginable detail. Bases total grade on your essay answer. I got a B, but it was not worth all the effort and stress. The best part of the class is that you can skip the final if you have a c or better.
Very interesting class and teacher, but hard for those who aren't very good at writing essays since your grade is only based on that. He lets you drop the final if you have a c or better in his class, and if you bomb that, it wont effect your grade, which is a good thing. If you really want an interesting class then this is the one for you.
Cool guy. Read the books! Only work is reading and tests are 3 in class essays. Not much from in class lectures are on the tests. He only takes role for the first few weeks. Only have to take final if you aren't happy with your grade.
Very nice guy, funny too. He grades really hard on the essay tests, and wants A LOT of detail. As for his lectures they are a bit dry... he just talks and doesn't write anything or use over heads that much. But you do learn a lot, if you take him you won't be regret it, but be prepared for kind of a boring class.
Great teacher. Tests are mostly bluebook essays. He grades tough but he is very fair. Lectures allot but still makes the subject interesting. He asks the class for their opinions and doesn't shoot anyones answer down. I highly recommend taking this class!
Had this class for summer school. A bit hard; but if you read your books thoroughly, you'll do great. This class requires DETAILED essay writing tests; so if you're not good at that, it might be a bit challenging. Since there are only 3 tests that determines your grade, getting at least a low "A" on each tests will help you get an "A" in the class.
Great Teacher! Homework includes lots of reading!!! But that's it for homework. All tests are essays and from the reading. very informative, and interesting class!
This teacher really knows his stuff. if you enjoy history you will love his class, unfortunately i don't, so i found myself quite bored, often. tests are mostly essays, which he expects great detail and he grades a little tough. but he is a great history teacher, if you like history. lots of reading.
great teacher, made you interested in the topic. relateable, read the books he assigns because it will help you tons on the test! i would definetly reccomend this class
I took Hist 21 with Larue and he made it really interesting. Most of the class is just lecturing about the reading. You definitely need to read the books. It was a fun class, but it was not an easy A. I suggest taking notes on the reading or at least highlighting. Great teacher though. Funny.
Not an easy class, but I actually learned something! I enjoyed lecture because Larue is such a fab teacher... Hate history but would take a history class him again, provided I didn't have to go through with the exams... those aren't fun. He really is possibly the best teacher I've had. Not my favourite, due to the subject, but quality-wise... A+.
Larue is one of the most intellectual, intelligent, and thought provoking professors I have had. You must complete all the reading and know how to write an analytical essay if you want to succeed in this challenging class. The material was very interesting and I absorbed a lot. Larue makes himself available outside of class if you make the effort.
Great instructor that makes students connect with history and the materials he requires you to read. He really makes you analyze the subjects and as a result I retained much of what I learned. He is a kind professor, but doesn't allow for an BS. If you show up and apply yourself you should get at least a "B". Top SRJC professor in my opinion.
Larue is a great professor! He is by far one of the best teachers I had. I never hesitated to go to his class this semester. He lectures all class but you actually learn something from it. Tests are 3 essays with multiple choice. He is very funny and knows what he's talking about!
He is a nice person, but he grades way too hard. If you are not go at taking test, you might not get a good grade. he will not give you extra credit. It was hard to understand the main book. choose carefully
He is a very approachable and kind. He lectures the entire class period and can be boring at times. His tests dont't reflect his lectures. So make sure you read the texts thoroughly if you want to pass each test.
Larue is a great teacher. He is clear and will help any student that has a question. The one problem with him is that he grades very hard. It is hard to get up to his standards of writing, but he will give you a C on your tests and papers if you really try but still don't meet his standards. The books are absolutely mandatory to pass this class.
It is nice to find a professor in a junior college that meets the standards of an university instructor. If you enjoy lectures and respect intelligence, Larue is a fantastic choice. He is not merciful when it comes to grading essays but after I feel my writing has greatly improved. Great eye opening class, both in history and structure.
Great lecturer, hard grader. I LOVED this class. I especially recommend it for students who are really interested in the subject. LaRue's lectures are interesting and truly engaging. You will learn a lot, just be willing to work. If you are just looking for an easy A, this is probably not the teacher for you.
Larue has interesting and insightful lectures. He definitely is very knowledgeable. He does however have very high expectations. So this is a good class if you plan on transferring. He's a hard grader, especially on the essays. ALWAYS READ THE ASSIGNED READINGS. Some questions are from the books and not his lecture.
Andre is very intelligent and engaging. He really makes the subject interesting and I learned so much from this class. I would recommend if you can take it P/NP because he does grade hard but there isnt really much homework just reading and a couple of tests which he grades really hard. I would recommend this class just not if you want an A
Truly insightful class. Remarkably intelligent professor, surprised he's teaching at a Junior college. His test are as follows: you will not get an A. I had a 4.2 GPA in HS and passed with a low B. You'd take this class to further your views on life, so take the P/NP option.
Mr. Larue is an amazing teacher. He is very intelligent and insightful. I learned so much in this class. It is not an easy class though. I received an A but he REALLY makes you work for it. Be as specific as possible in your essays and give a lot of examples. He is a very good teacher. I highly recommend him!
Mr. LaRue is an amazing teacher! I adored his classes, his lectures, and insight. He kindly integrates your comments into his lectures. He was very knowledgeable on the subject matter and made us all equally interested. Tests are tough-mostly straight essays, so make sure your writing skill are up.
Larue is really hard. He's a super hard essay grader, and the readings take a lot of time. That being said, he is a really good teacher. He is sometimes pretty funny in class and he makes his lectures interesting. His point system makes it to where it's actually hard to fail, as long as you try. If you actually read, you'll be fine.
I am very impressed with him. He's very fair with everything. You learn a lot of great things about American History. He's very understanding. Love him!
Do not take this class if you are taking a lot of units. It is an insightful class however there are so many in class essays and you have to memorize boring history and ALOT of it, off the top of your head. The class kinda sucked.
Tests were mainly essay based. I thought I would breeze by cuz I consider myself a strong writer but he is a TOUGH grader. He lectures all class, doesn't write any notes on the board or have slides which I didn't like. On the plus side he never takes attendance. You need to read all the books tho cuz tests are based on the reading
For students who want to do work. LaRue is excellent.
REALLY tough grader and challenging class. Tests are based on the book reading so make sure you read it and memorize names, events, etc. Most of points for test are from in class essays. There are also out of class essays.
If you have a chance take this class! It is purely amazing. Larue will totally challenge your writing. He teaches this class at a true university level...it's truly refreshing! I took so much away from this class! You definitely need to do the reading, attend class, and plan on filling up a whole blue book if you want the A though!
He is a hard grader that gives little feed back on papers. There is no way to improve if you do not know what you did wrong. I read all the books and went to every lecture and still barely passed the class. I do not recommend this class.
LaRue has a lot of swag. As a teacher he's pretty good with his lectures but his in-class essays are quite difficult. If you don't have the time to read the dry history book veery week and don't thoroughly understand it then I would recommend an easier teacher.
The tests are based off a combination of his lectures and the textbook reading. It's a lot of material. But his lectures (mostly) mirror the book so if you take solid notes from both you're fine. He grades pretty tough and gives little feedback. I never missed a single class, took great notes and got a B.
I would recommend his class :)
Good teacher, usually lets you out of class early.
His lectures aren't dry, and he gives us guidelines on what the tests and essays will be on, and what we need to read for it. I'm not sure why people are saying he's a tough grader, considering I got a 34/35 on a paper I finished 5 mins before class. Listen to what he wants us to learn and study accordingly, it's not that hard.
This class was a pleasure to take-and quite easy as well. Mr. Larue is good at keeping the class engaged in his lectures and is flexible with make up tests and quizzes. The homework is beyond easy, and the exams are as well. You have to memorize stuff, and put in effort to learn like with any class. The material is very intriguing and interesting.
Mr. Larue is an awesome teacher! His lectures are amazing, he speaks with such grace and impact. He is a tough grader but, his class is worth the challenge. You don't have to read the text but, it is strongly recommended to keep up. He is so educated in all aspects of history. Mr. Larue's lectures are so intriguing that you will not want to miss.
There were only lectures everyday and reading throughout the whole semester. There was only essays and quizzes and no extra homework to bring up your grade. If you wanna pass, read the books and get a lot of detail in your essays.
