Professor Silva is really understanding and always available to explain any topics. The assignments were actually fun and very doable. You learn a lot about research. Impossible to get anything lower than an A.
Prof. Silva is the literally the best professor I have taken at FIU. He does his best to make the lecture super interesting and engaging. It is a GREAT class to take if you are interested in research even in the slightest bit.
Take this class.
Professor Silva is very kind and compassionate with his students. Like any other college course, you have to put in your part to get a good grade, but he is always there to help if you have questions or doubts. I 10/10 recommend this course and professor!! Also, the class is quite interesting!
Class is actually interesting from the lectures to the assessments with live mosquitos. The slides of his lectures are available online as well. The professor is caring and will answer any questions that you may have. There is also an emphasis on research which is great for pre-meds.
Great professor. As an active researcher, he gives you great insight into this world and is able to give you a great perspective on it. I totally recommend this professor for this class, specially if you are interest in disease transmission through mosquitoes.
Extremely interesting curriculum. I'm grateful for the experience, and it is segwaying my career into research. Great and caring professor, and really wants his students to pass. Want to wrangle mosquitos? Take this class.
Dr. Silva is fantastic. His lectures are great and straight to the point. You definitely need to go to class to do well in his exams, but the class is worth it! In just a couple of weeks I learned so much about mosquitoes and vector ecology. I never knew these tiny animals could be so interesting. Take this class if you want to learn and get an A!
Professor Andre has been by far one of the best professors I have ever had! He is extremely well versed in his field and has motivated me to learn more about mosquitoes outside of the scope of the course. Professor Andre is extremely caring about his students and is always available to help. I would take this professor again and again if I could!
Professor Andre is very understanding and works with you to ensure you excel. I took him for summer C and would race from work to attend class. Clear instructions and always prepared with interactive assessments. this course is being offered fall '19, I highly recommend.
Solid professor. He's very earnest and willing to listen and answer any question you may have. Put in a decent effort and you'll get a good grade.
I took professor Andre the first semester he taught this course (spring 2019) and it was a great experience! He's quick to answer emails, cares about the students, and is a genuinely nice person. I enjoyed taking this course. Highly recommend!!!
Dr. Silva is perhaps the best professor Ive had so far at FIU. He is extremely kind and cares about his students. He always asks the class how they feel about certain aspects such as assignments and tests. He even asked us how we would like our exams to be. No textbook as all the lectures are from PowerPoints that he made from experience.
Professor Silva is GREAT! His class is about mosquitoes and upon entering you think it is going to be extremely boring, it isn't! It is very interesting and very cool. The only downside to this class was the number of group projects, I hate relying on people and he has multiple (3-4). I still highly recommend.
Great Teacher , just show up
Great teacher
He was the BEST!! TAKE HIM. Just be sure to attend class every lecture and everything else will come easy. He is a super nice guy who simply wants you to LEARN and do WELL. This class was so much fun with lots of activities to enforce learning. Definitely learned a ton about mosquito control, suppression, anatomy, and also where research is today.
Prof Silva is a great person. Really cares about the students and their feedback when it comes to the class. There are two exams; one midterm and the final and each one is based heavily on the lecture notes. Go to every class and take additional notes since the ppt presentations aren't always enough. He also gives in class assessments.
The lecture slides have few words on them so you need to be present in order to get all of the information necessary, but the class is very straightforward and he gives hands on exercises in order to better understand the material
Professor Silva is super nice and understanding. The course required you to set mosquito egg traps weekly but its really easy to do. Attendance is taken by check-in and the lectures are powerpoints while he explains the slides, take notes. Super straightforward class and interesting. He is super nice, take him!!
Class was not interesting& very stressful. VERY lecture heavy and not as hands on so the material is harder to learn.
He is one of the nicest professors I have ever encountered at FIU. He cares for your grades and builds a connection with the students. We had to set out weekly traps, do weekly in class assignments, and attendance is mandatory. The only downside is the difficulty of the final/midterm exam!
The professor is very respectful and nice. Super organized with his lectures. The one thing that's annoying is the group projects. You have like 3-6 activities with a group (2 presentations and 1 debate activity plus in class group discussions). Not the worst but for sure can be horrible depending on who you're paired with. Overall ok.
Prof. Silva was a really great professor. He is super knowledgeable about the topics of mosquitoes and really cares about his students succeeding. Go to class and work on the group projects and you will do well. If you don't go to class though then you won't be able to make a great grade. The projects were cool and the lecture was very insightful.
Highly knowledgeable, eager to teach, and super approachable. Ask questions! The subject is surprisingly interesting. Along with a midterm and final there are in-class assessments and group projects. Group projects are the major downside, and he can sometimes ask very specific questions on exams. The class is otherwise not difficult.
Really cool, doesn't make you stress, but also makes you work for the grade, well balanced course
Professor Dacosta was a great professor. Most of the material is practical and connected to real life applications. The information provided was very clear and cares for the students to learn and understand the material instead of just the grade. The grade you get in this class is mostly on you.
He is a pretty good professor. You will learn a lot about mosquitoes. Had a ton of fun at his class. Do take him.
Very good professor, takes his work very seriously, is engaged in his research and loves what he does.
Professor Da Costa Silva is an amazing professor who is always wiilling to help as much as you need. The class is not hard to understand as long as attend class and pay attention to the Lectures. Although the exams do count for a lot they are extremely fair, and will get an A if you study, or ask him questions if you need. He is extremely caring!!!
The class is pretty to the point, and he's very knowledgeable about the subject. There's very few group activities but they're pretty worth it. Overall a pretty good professor.
Hands on examples in class, willing to help students and genuinely cares about the subject.
Very interesting and enjoyable class. There are a lot of group projects and participation, although he does not grade them very harsh. This does require some work outside of the classroom (egg collections). All in all definitely recommend to take him if you need an elective or are interested in mosquitoes.
Really enjoyed this class. Make sure you participate and do your assignments and that's it. This class is an easy A, one of the best professors at FIU.
Decent professor, but not that strict.
Dr. Silva is a very kind and caring professor. He will help you excel in his class. I enjoyed this class. There is a midterm and a final exam only. Attendance is graded and there is a graded debate. Very fun and easy class as long as you put an effort.
very understanding, he teaches with passion and nothing less, he knows his information so he will teach it. uses group work a lot so thats good exam are easy but grades hard but curves just want to see what you know dont that that grade hard
Silva is DOPEEE. He is super nice and his class is awesome! As long as you submit your assignments and come to class no reason you shouldn't get an A. Honestly, he's a cool Brazilian guy who loves mosquitos, you're going 2 learn some cool stuff, Not stressful like other classes are but still equally insightful and important. OVERALL AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Good class
He's one of the best professors I've had. He takes his work seriously and motivates you to learn and engage in class activities. He is always available for extra help and responds to e-mails quickly. Make sure to show up to class as his exams are not cookie cutter and you will need to know HOW to apply the information to real scenarios!
Hes a great professor! Honestly you just need to come to class and pay attention!
Professor Silva is super caring and does his best to make lectures interesting with stories about his mosquito research. He's very relaxed and cares about student opinions/participation. There's a few group projects but they're very easy. Just make sure you keep up with the mosquito collections and go to class and you should get an A.
Great professor and a nice course. Very interesting subjects were covered. One midterm and a final. I would take any class by Him. You wont regret it.
The professor was lenient and cared about all the students. I took the course for summer C but the pandemic occurred and i was working during lecture so he was very communicative and helpful whenever I would have to make an assignment up. Would take again if i could.
weekly mosquito egg collections and a few group assignments accompanied by a midterm and final. overall not a bad course.
Great professor
Good professor. Provides powerpoints but has basically no information on the slides. You have to pay full attention during class to know exam material.
Andre Silva is a wonderful instructor. He is very passionate about the subject and his research and it is quite admirable considering it is a class mostly about mosquitoes - He is always attentive to his students and wants everyone to pass and understand the material. Great instructor!
The class was interesting to say the least. If you love mosquitoes this is the class for you! Gives lots of opportunities for you to raise grade.
Easy class just come to class and take notes.
Participate and youll be ok. He really cares about his students and wants to engage with everyone.
Interesting class must listen to lecture to understand
Amazing lectures
awesome professor easy A
The class is mandatory and he asks you to keep your camera on (remote class). The class is lecture "heavy" and he does several assignments but they're all due before the end of class. There are also a few group assignment but it's nothing extremely hard. I never used the book, only his lectures. He is really nice and understanding.
Real nice guy, helpful. 2 Exams total with a few quizzes (non-pop), group projects. This is from an online class perspective cause you know Covid
Professor Silvia is one of the nicest professors I've had. He really cares about you learning the material so most of the class is lecture based ( you have to either attend lectures or watch them to pass) but there is no homework. The class is not hard if you pay attention and review.
Dr. Da Costa Da Silva is a really nice instructor. He knows the class material very well and is always prepared for class. Aside from the fact that he grades based on participation and attendance, the lectures are really helpful to the class. Actually, the lectures will be beneficial to doing well on the exams. Show up and it wont be hard to pass.
Professor Silva is a great professor who is attentive to the needs of his students and focuses on making them understand the material. He assignments arent tough but they are easier to those who listen and participate. Overall, a very good class.
Took him in the summer during COVID PCB4717. Being on zoom he requires that cameras are on. Students must participate in the class. There are two exams a midterm and final. The exams combined are 50% of your grade. This class Is all about mosquitoes. This class isnt an easy A, but he works with you to help you understand if you ask for help.
I'm currently taking PCB 4717 with this professor and he is very caring and understanding towards his students. You also learn some pretty interesting things in this class.
Honestly the class took me by surprise it created an interest in the subject in question.
Dr. Silva is a really caring respectful professor. It is an easy elective that will get you an A in the class. Show up and do the assignments and listen to the power points lectures.
Dr. Silva is very kind and caring! He does his best to engage students despite the remote learning environment. Attend lectures, do class activities, and pay attention and you should be fine. Midterm is written and I found it kind of difficult, not sure about final yet.
Dr. Silva is a great professor! The course was very interesting and had many hands-on activities and group projects. Information is straightforward and comes from the lectures. Definitely recommend taking his course!
Professor Silva is a sweet man and cares about his students. Hes also kind of funny in his own way. He has a bit of an accent because hes from Brazil but you get used to it (its not that bad at all). The course consisted of lecture, small group projects, quizzes, a midterm & a final. Throughout the course, mosquito eggs collection are done too.
Really eazy class if you do the little assignments and go to class.
Solid professor but the course is not actually on physiology or biochemistry. It focuses on mosquitoes.
The best professor I've had at FIU. Professor Silva cares about his students understanding the subject and it was a very interactive course even through this pandemic.
A very caring and understanding professor.
Prof. De Silva is super nice! Because of covid our class was online. Zoom meetings were not mandatory but it is worth % of your grade and some assignments come from group work done during the meetings. The class does contain alot of information in the lectures, therefore pay attention.
This prof makes everything very clear and is very well versed with the course content. You will be doing weekly collections of mosquito eggs, which was rather interesting and a new experience for me. He has to exams in the course along with some group assignments and small writing assignments, and as long as you're paying attention you'll do fine.
professor has a good heart but has an accent & talks very slow and takes up whole class time for no reason. his slides are just pictures so you have to pay attention. content of the course is a bit extra but can be learned, easier if youve taken genetics and biotechnology beforehand though. bit boring but an easy A/B depending on how much you try
Very kind professor, he is very understanding and is very passionate about what he teaches. Would have preferred to take this class in person as having to do things via zoom led to some isssues
Professor Andre respects all his students. His lectures about mosquitoes were very interesting. There are group projects/presentations and short writing assignments. The midterm and final were slightly difficult, but fair.
One of my favorite professors at FIU. He is very knowledgable on the topic he teaches which makes it very interesting for those in the course. If you really participate in class and try to understand every lecture or group discussion you will do extremely well on the exams. Definitely take this professor if you have the chance!
I never thought Id ever learn about mosquitoes so in depth how I have, but because of Silva, now I will carry my knowledge about mosquitoes forever. Hes so nice. Take notes on his lectures and itll be your ticket to an A on the exams. The assignments are so easy. He makes everything about this class interesting and easy to learn. Take him!!
Professor Silva is so nice! He was willing to help me with assignments outside of class, and is available any time. I'm glad I took this class because I found it really interesting. His lectures and explanations made the material easy to digest. I would recommend!
LITERALLY THE BEST PROFESSOR IN FIU. he is so understanding and its super obvious that hes passionate about what he teaches. Im so glad I took this class because I learned a lot . Not an easy A but if you study a bit, it wont be hard.
The professor is great! He's really understanding and explains concepts thoroughly. Gives reviews before exams! He really cares about his students.
Professor Andre is a great professor. He really wants everyone to learn and has great assessments. Few quizzes and 1 midterm and 1 final.
The exams are difficult if you are not paying attention in class. I have any online class but he makes things fair, and create group projects to give you a chance to raise your grade.
Professor Silva is so excited about the material in this class that he makes class (kinda) fun. Overall, pretty easy A. Attendance is mandatory but he's a really lenient grader.
Professor Silva is very nice and caring, his class material is very interesting but it's a lot of information. As long as you study, you'll do good in the class.
The course content was interesting and easy to follow along, especially since Professor Silva is always available outside of class and responds to emails very quickly. There are group projects that are directly correlated to course content and definitely help in learning and applying concepts. Definitely, would take again.
The professor is amazing, sympathetic, and caring. He really wants you to learn, so take your time to study mosquitoes. There is only 2 test which is 50% of your final grade, so make sure you're prepared. Most of the questions come from lectures, and they are not as easy as you may think.
This professor has been the best one I have taken an FIU. He is very enthusiastic with his class and loves group projects and participating on them. Hes always available outside classes and makes you feel confident with the course. Excellent preparation and knowledge of the material. I would recommend him 100%.
He is an excellent professor. He provides a lot of doable assignments. The lectures are super easy to follow. Most importantly the exams are based on the lectures so it is best to revisit them when midterms and finals come around. There is only one midterm and a final but the final is not accumulative. There are some group projects but it's fun.
Professor Silva is amazing! Highly recommend this course if you are looking for one. He teaches you everything you will need for the exams and is very clear. He cares about his students and will make sure everyone understands the lectures. Very sweet professor and interesting course. I learned A LOT.
He's an amazing and respectable professor. He teaches everything in such a calm nature that despite not doing so well in the course, I love attended the lectures as it used to zoom out all of stress and workload as everything he explained was so much easier to understand. I never felt a bit of pressure in this class, 10/10 to you proff !
Took him for my final undergrad semester and he is extremely friendly as well as understanding. He always tries to help you and encourages participation. no regrets !
really really nice and fair, content can be difficult but dr. silva is very open to helping in any way.
Very fun professor who makes mosquitoes interesting.
Reviews for exams have nothing useful for the actual exam.
Great professor, would take him again for any biology class.
As long as you pay attention and do your part you won't fail.
He's really good and enthusiastic about the content. He has 1st hand experience with some of the things he talked about in class, so he was able to go into more detail. He treats us fairly and has a sense of humor.
He give a couple of assessments that are usually watch a video and answer the questions while tying in the lectures from his class. His makes the class really fun and chill while learning about mosquitoes. There are 2 or 3 group projects but they're not difficult at all. Overall, I highly recommend this professor and would take him again.
Course is based on scientific research articles published by entomologists .
Exams are directly from the lectures, if you take notes you'll do well in this class.
An amazing professor and hes extremely passionate about the course. You'll really enjoy the material and learn a lot. The class is not hard, the course work is is manageable and his quiz are easy. THE EXAMS... EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!! Completely different from the quizzes. Despite not doing well in the course, Ill take him again. Wonderful lecture!
Professor Silva is so amazing! I definitely recommend him to everyone. He is a very understanding professor and wants you to learn the material but with the assignments he gives you will be able to get the hang of it.
I had him online due to COVID. Hes monotone and that makes it hard to focus on his lectures. You have to go to class and take lots of notes because its not in written in his ppt - his way of making you come to class. Exam reviews have nothing to do with the exams, so theyre pointless. No extra credit & no curve. Hard to get an A.
He is very nice and understanding.
He's very nice, very approachable. If you ever need to email him about anything, he always responds. Just pay attention in class and you will pass!
Dr. Silva is a really nice and sweet guy who you can talk to easily. He strives to teach the class all about mosquitoes and is very knowledgeable about the field. Participate in class, he appreciates it. Make sure to go lecture and write down notes of what he says in class. Looking over my notes really helped me prepare for the 2 exams we had.
This course had a lot of work to it.. its important to attend all lectures.. but he is a very nice teacher..
Great and straightforward class .
Amazing Professor!
This class is very unusual but in a good way! It was totally not what I expected but I really enjoyed it. The professor deeply cares about the success of his students. This class was very hands-on and the powerpoints were full of info, but the tests were extremely fair. Go to class as it's important for your success!
Dr. Silva is the best professor you will find at FIU! I learned so much in his course just by paying attention! I barely needed to study because his lectures are just that good! I have never learned material this easily. Everyone was so motivated to go to class and participate! He is very respectful and cares for his students. You will love him! :)
Professor Silva was so accommodating the semester and he really truly cares about his students you are going to learn a lot in this class I will highly recommend it it is not a hard course you just have to pay attention in class and also participate in the assignments! Overall I will definitely be taking him again in the future if possible!
Although the Professor is very engaged with making his students learn, the content itself is very boring. I wish there were more activities involved during class instead of just listening to the lecture. Midterm was 10 questions, multiple choice and free response ( its not that bad); however, the final was harder, 20 multiple choice questions.
Very caring and understanding. Going to class make things a lot easier when its comes time to take quizzes and exams. A few group projects, a few quizzes. Midterm is short response final is 20 multiple choice questions.
Dr. Silva is a professor that truly enjoys teaching this subject. He has an extensive background in the study of mosquitoes and he enjoys giving the knowledge of this subject to others.
Attendance is mandatory. Pay attention is class because is PowerPoints do not contain any notes, only pictures and articles.
Professor Silva is great, he really enjoys teaching and makes students enjoy the lecture. Take him!
Excellent professor.
Really sweet professor, really passionate with what he does, I kid you not this is an easy course, just pay attention and attend to class. You learn new things about mosquitoes which is pretty cool! Ill take this course again blind folded. (No homework) (theres a few group projects but they are fun)
Great professor!! Made all the lectures very interesting and has a fair grading system
The professor is extremely caring for his students. If you show up to each class and take notes, you will have no problem with the quizzes and exams.
Good Professor
The one problem I had with his course is the debate he made us do. 10 people had to debate against each other while the rest of the class asked questions. This was extremely unfair. In the midst of finals week, you have students balancing tests and working on their debate while other students just got to come to class and ask 1-3 questions.
A very knowledgable professor that always knows the answers to every question a student can have. His class is a class you have to show up for in order to get a good grade. Class participation and the in class assessments are important in the course.
Did a lot of group work. Gives midterm which is fill in responses and multiple choice. Final is multiple choice and we were given 2 attempts. This class was centered ln learning abt mosquitoes and we had to collect them every week for grading. Is not s difficult course you just have to make sure you listen to lecture bc ppt is mostly pictures.
Pay attention to the lectures and you'll do fine in the quizzes and tests. Multiple group projects but they are fairly simple and easy.
This class has a lot of group projects, relatively easy as well as one debate. The quizzes are straight forwards and 3 attempts allowed. The professor is very nice and understanding.
This is a class for people in the last year. It is very comprehensive on its content.
Dr. Silva is a great professor. Hes really sociable and makes you want to come to class. Attendance IS mandatory and group work is required, but its nothing too intense and though he wants to see you engaged and trying when it comes to work, its not super intense and you dont feel an insane pressure. It just feels like a fun group activity.
Take him. Do everything and you will do great
Professor Silva is a great professor, very knowledgeable, and helpful. His class is very applicable to real-world issues. It is interesting and not too hard.
Professor da Costa is the best professor at FIU I took so far. He cares for his students deeply and always tries to accommodate if you can't come to class or missed a quiz. He always gives you more attempts for quizzes and if you come to class, you won't have a problem!
Dr. Andre Silva is one of the most caring and knowledgable professors I have had the pleasure to meet at FIU. Although attendance is not mandatory, it is a portion of your grade and the lectures are vital for understanding the content. There are several group assignments that make the topics more interesting, and very little homework is assigned :)
One of the most interesting and overall fun experiences I've ever had in an upper division biology course. There are multiple straightforward group assignments that make you apply the content learned in the course via epidemic simulations, debates, field studies, demonstrations, etc. THE PROFESSOR IS AMAZING!!!
Cool upper-division biology elective! Attendance is part of the grade, there are two exams which are a midterm and final, a few easy quizzes/assignments, set up weekly ovitraps, and multiple group projects. The exams/quizzes have more than 1 attempt. Take notes and pay attention. Caring, helpful, and knowledgeable professor, one of the best!!
Overall and very interesting course and very great professor, very understanding. Participate and pay attention and you should end up with an A
Professor da Silva is one of the most caring and humble professors I have ever had in college. He is a fair grader, gives plenty of opportunities to participate, his class is very interactive and the projects are always interesting. PLEASE take his class! you will not regret it !
Professor Silva was one of the best professors I have had by far at FIU. He cares about his students and his profession deeply while making it a nice and fun environment. He is kind and responds to emails in a timely manner, and will help with any questions or concerns. Highly recommend professor Silva if your planning on taking this course!
He explains the material very well and makes us all participate and feel engaged during class. There is a midterm and a final, and a lot of group seminars (they really are interesting). 100% recommend
Dr. Silva is an amazing professor. He is so enthusiastic about the material that he makes you want to learn it. Hes also extremely nice and very understanding. Attendance is mandatory as its part of your grade, but even if attendance was not mandatory, I would still go. Grade based on a midterm and a non-cumulative final. 100% recommend!!
Dr. Silva is an amazing professor. He cares deeply about his students and his profession. His lectures are amazing and very interesting. I highly recommend you to take his class, you will not regret!
He is an amazing and caring professor. willing to help you out when needed. definitely would take again
Dr. Silva is a professor that you have to trust. He's great and has a different teaching style, but if you put in the work, you will learn. You'll also learn to not "micromanage" your grade but I promise you that in the end, it will make sense. Just try your best and you will see you you'll end up with a great grade.
quizzes every class. nice but get ready to study.
Dr.Silva was a very caring and understanding professor. He was extremely easy to talk to and would help with any problems you may be concerned with. In terms of the course, it is not the easiest but I recommend to go over the lecture powerpoints
He is a great Professor, cares about his students, will help you pass if you put in the work, it is a heavy subject so you do have to learn in the outside but overall great, would take him again.
He is an awesome professor, wiling to help you understand the concepts and help with your grades. It is a hard subject so you must study by yourself as well
Great professor, the chapter are long but if you study with time you will do great, lectures help a lot and he is very passionate about the subject
Professor Da Silva is a nice instructor. He is very approachable and respects every student eventhough some students do not act in their best behavior. Prof Da Silva acts in the best interest of the students. There were reading quizzes, 5 exams and homework for each module that helped understing them.
This professor was extremely caring and understanding towards his students. The course is heavy so be ready to read the textbook and complete Achieve assignments. Toward the end, one of the most helpful activities was to draw/visualize the Glycolysis pathway, citric acid cycle, etc. Overall, a kind professor who was passionate about teaching.
65% Test average and still passed with an 89%. Just do the completion-based homework and the in-class quizzes.
Do the homework, iclickers, and do good on quizzes. Averaged 65% on tests and passed the class with a 91%.
The professor was very passionate about biochemistry and showed dedication in learning new ways to improve his teaching style. Is very fair in his grading style and gives many extra credit points as well as dropping multiple assignments throughout the year and having a balanced grade book to boost up the overall grade, not only tests.
The class is hard, but the professor cares a lot about his students and makes a good effort to help students understand the concepts of biochemistry. There's plenty of extra credit opportunities so do not get discouraged by a bad test score. It is really important to actively study everyday because the course tends to get overwhelming pretty fast.
Biochem is a hard class, so you need to get ready to read and study a lot, but Pr. Da Silva is really nice and gives a lot of extra-credit. I would definitely take him again.
Nice professor and cares for the students
He is a good person; he cares about the students. It was the first time he taught this course. I would not take this class with him again since I ended up teaching myself, but I could take a class with him again if it is a course in which he already has experience.
take him, he definitely cares for his students
Biochem is dense.. but Pros: he replies very promptly via email and grading is fair with much opportunity to improve via iclicker, hw, & extra credit. Cons: speech/lecture is poor. not so confident, & does not get straight to the point for what is expected of you Prepare to study heavy PowerPoints that are also worded poorly.
It was his first time teaching this class, but he was passionate about it and made it as interactive as possible. He gave extra credit after each exam as well as a review of each test during the class. Overall, he did his best since it was his first time teaching the class, and he tried to make every student achieve the best grade they could get.
The class is very well structured with a clear rubric in the syllabus that is very fair and the Professor is flexible. The professor is extremely nice and kind. He will make changes if he finds things that are incorrect and will also make sure you understand the overall topic rather than hyperspecific details.
He is a wonderful person and truly cares for the students success. He was not prepared for such a difficult class. You WILL learn on your own, there is an abundance of extra credit opportunity, if you do not have a strong bio background this class will be difficult.
The prof was extremely caring and truly tried to make the best of biochem as possible. With that being said you can definitely tell that it was his first time teaching biochem. He gives ample opportunities to boost your grade (iclickers, extra credit) but the structure on how to prepare for exams was confusing and the tests followed suit.
This professor is very nice. He really cares for the students. There are quizzes at the beginning of most classes, but the three lowest grades get dropped. There are iclickers throughout the lectures. The professor answers emails very quickly.
This was Professor Silva's first semester teaching biochemistry. Despite some challenges throughout the semester, he was extremely caring and clear on what he expected. Reading the textbook, paying attention in class, and preparing for quizzes were all weekly methods for us to prepare. All things considered, I believe I learned through this class.
This professor did a really good job in trying to understand our concerns for the class. He was always asking for ways he could improve the class and really seemed to care about us. He also gave many extra credit opportunities to help your grade. Would recommend!
I really liked the set-up of this class. We had PowerPoints and homework for each chapter that isn't difficult. There are quizzes almost every class based off the reading of the PowerPoints, mostly, and the homework. 1 exam, 3 quizzes, 3 homework assignments, and iclicker questions are dropped. The professor is very understanding. Extra credit!
He is a very nice person, but you have to study hard. He gives extra credits, iclicker, and class activity that help you a lot with your grade.
He is a very nice person, and help you a lot giving you extra credits, iclicker and class activity to help your overall grade.
He is a really good person, and help a lot giving you extra credits, iclickers and class activity to get a good grade. Biochem is difficult, but if you read his power points and see ak lecture videos + his classes, you are gonna have a good grade.
Very sweet and funny professor. Quizzes almost every class based on the material learned in the last lecture and he made the concepts fun and simple to learn.
Professor Silva is extremely caring and wants to make the information as understandable as possible. Biochem is not the easiest subject, but he tries to make it doable.
Professor Silva is an exceptional biochemistry professor who truly cares about the success and well-being of his students. He was very dedicated to teaching through out the whole semester. I recommend to anyone to take him. You can tell his passion for teaching, making his lectures engaging and fun.
The professor cares a lot about the subject and the students, doesn't take away from the fact that it's a material heavy course that should be reviewed in class and at home. 5 exams and one is dropped (same with other assignments), and there's post lecture quizzes almost each class; he ends up giving a lot of extra credit though. Good prof overall!
Professor Silva is passionate about Biology, and a very caring professor. Gives a ton of extra credit opportunity. Great guy.
Prof Andre Silva is a really good person and funny in class. His lectures are not that heavy but you need to go to class for iclicker questions since it counts as participation. For the exams it consists in 5 Master Assigments of 30 questions each (multiple choice) and in class quizzes almost every week. I would take him again for future classes.
Dr. Silva is a caring professor who wants the students to succeed.
Biochemistry is not easy, you have to put a lot of effort in order to pass. Andre Silva is a caring professor, always trying to help his students to succeed, despite this class was his first time teaching Biochem, he tried his best.
He drops the lowest test grade but often the test averages were around 60%. There are 5 exams and there is no cumulative final.
The only problem we had with this professor was that this was his first time teaching biochemistry, so he was learning along with us. He is a really nice guy, and he is not interested in failing us. However, this class is very lecture-heavy since we cover PowerPoints of even 100 slides in one class. Study hard and be prepared for quizzes.
Very nice and caring professor. However, biochemistry is already a lot of material and he lectures a lot but doesn't teach the material well. His PowerPoints weren't terrible but not good either. The tests would have stuff we didn't even learn sometimes. Thankfully, his grading was lenient and helped. I received an A, but I still had to work hard.
Very nice and caring professor, not interested in failing anybody. You should take him. However, know a few things before. He knows his stuff but still needs to make some adjustments to his teaching. The tests would have stuff we didn't even learn sometimes. His grading however was lenient and helped, I received an A+. Offers much extra credit.
His first semester ever teaching Biochemistry. One of the most caring professors I've had. Constantly requested and adapted feedback from students and was flexible on IClickers/Quizzes/Exam questions that were ambiguous. Exams were fair, almost completely lecture and power point based. Class requires considerable time, would take Prof again.
Extremely caring professor, offers a lot of extra credit. He reiterates every class that his main goal is for students to learn the big picture of Biochemistry and not be stressed about their grades. Exams were lecture and PP based, required considerable amount of studying but overall fair. Finished with A. Would take prof. Silva again.
I think professor Da Silva is very caring and understanding that this is not an easy course. The powerpoints provide information needed for the test but it is still good to watch the AK lectures he provides.Overall, he is nice and this class requires a sufficient amount of studying.
Lots of quizzes. 5 exams and lots of achieve hw. You will have to teach yourself the material
You will have to teach yourself the material. lots of weekly quizzes 5 exams and achieve hw. Drops lowest grade
He is a very nice person, very funny during lectures. Take lots of notes. and study all of the materials. Be ready to study 3-4 hours after class of before class.
The professor is good overall. He is very caring and works hard to be as fair as possible when grading. I just feel the class was not as engaging as other classes I have taken.
Professor Silva is very nice and caring about the students in his class and their performance in the course. Biochemistry is a hard class regardless of who you take it with so I understand the negative reviews as those are common with any hard class, I think this class is very manageable but you will need to come to class and study, obviously.
Professor Silva is a great person overall; however, it was his first time teaching a difficult course which he carried out well. Personally, I ended up with an A in the class because I put time outside of class to study the powerpoint and AK lecture videos. This is not an easy course, YOU MUST spend time studying to understand.
Dr.Silva was an incredibly caring and knowledgeable professor who truly cares about his student's understanding of the topics discussed. From writing out mechanisms with us to going through the exam question by question, the class was great and he was very helpful.
The tests are pretty similar to the exams but be prepared to study content on your own because there is a lot of information to cover and it is difficult. There were five exams but Professor Silva drops one and has extra credit opportunities to help as much as he can. He is available to speak after class and is understanding.
I think that Dr. Silva is overall a good professor and really cares about the success of his students. He is willing to take extra time with his students to ensure that they understand the class material. The only negative aspect of this class is that we had a quiz almost every class which was stressful, but at least they weren't pop quizzes.
His exams are mainly PPT based with random information. Gives a lot of extra credit so it's hard to fail this course.
You need to study otherwise you stand no chance.
This was the professor's first time teaching general biochemistry, he is a very kind professor and will work with you, but you need to communicate things. The exams are not very difficult and a good grade is pretty easy to obtain in the course.
He's a good professor
Professor was a nice guy. It was his first time teaching Biochem but he is obviously a very knowledgeable person. My only complaint is other students in class made it difficult to concentrate and pay attention to material being taught. The class itself is difficult because of the material but professor tries to make it as digestible as possible.
I think that Dr. Silva is overall a good professor and really cares about the success of his students
Be wary of reviews since ec was given for them. Hard class it was his first time teaching it. We spent most the semester on dna replication and then did the 3 cycles in one week. 200+ slides per test with little emphasis on material. Nice guy but this class was a struggle. Grading scale makes it passable though so u can do it for sure.
This professor is super sweet but lacks experience. He gave out lots of extra credit but even then it was a lot of work to pass his class as its very content heavy and his powerpoints lack detail unlike his test. To be able to do good on his exams you have to read the textbook on top of studying the powerpoints.
This was Professor Silva's first time teaching biochem so a lot of the class was teaching yourself. His grading rubric was great because other assignments outweighed your bad exam scores. I did very mid on all the exam and still ended with an A from going to class and doing the homework. He is very kind and cares about improving his teaching.
Professor Silva is a great professor, he is sweet and cares for his students and teaching. Took him for his first semester teaching Biochem, he did well teaching the subject, however as it was his first semester there are a few things that need improvement. There was a quiz almost every class on previous chapter and 5 exams and gave extra credit.
Professor Silva is great. He cares for his students and is very sweet. Took him on his semester teaching Biochem, and a few things can be improved but nonetheless, it was fine. There was a quiz almost every class and a total of 5 exams with extra credit and homework.
Cares about his students and their understanding of the material, but his teaching style could use work. The classes felt unorganized, and communication of the material wasn't as very clear as hoped for such a high-level course. He gives plenty of extra credit and chances to save your grade. It was his first semester so keep this in mind, however.
Instructor was very nice, respectful and answered questions students had during lectures. Lectures were long, but lots of material to cover. Offers extra credit which was very helpful & always sent resources for topics covered in lectures.
The professor was great and did he's best to make everyone get a good grade
Biochem is not known as an easy course but Professor Silva would make it as easy as possible. Lectures are great and even though they are not mandatory, I recommend you don't miss any. Hearing the lecture and reading the PP at home is all you need to pass this class easily. I would 100% retake his class!
Overall, it was an okay class. It was his first time teaching a difficult course but he was very open with admitting and asking for feedback. The lectures were dense so was material and quizzes are very frequent. Considering that, he was very nice & understanding navigating the course for the first time and gave so many ec opportunities.
the professor is super nice and really cares about his students and their success. while the explanations are not the best, he does try and always asks for feedback on how to improve. i think biochem is overall hard & i feel the best way to learn is by watching the ak lectures he sends. he also provides lots of extra credit opportunities
Be FULLY aware, current rating is masked. Rating was used as extracred!t. The bar is extremely low, take MORA you will learn, if not take the chem heavy biochem, you will not learn anything. The MOST important cycles in biochem were taught in 1 week.(25% of the MCAT BTW)You will more than likely have to self teach. Good luck and good riddance.
Great professor and incredibly caring. Attendance is really important and will get you a lot of points. He gives extra credit and provides an extensive amount of resources to study and understand the material.
bad lecturer good heart first time teaching biochem, room for improvement very sweet and caring
Dr.Silva is a great lecturer. This is his first-semester teaching biochemistry. He is willing to hear feedback from his students and gives opportunities for extra credit. Very informed, concise, and kind. I trust his course will only become better in the coming semester.
This was used as extra credit so the true rating is masked. He barely knew what he was talking about, on the exams it was something he talked about once, or you had to read the book to understand because lectures were not clear. Do not take him if there is someone else available.
He was a nice guy and respected all his students, but this was his first time teaching this course and you could tell. He attempted to speed lecture through all the material which was not helpful for retaining any information. If you didn't dedicate time to study outside of class, you will definitely struggle.
Dr Silva was a good professor as a first-year teacher. Quizzes and tests were tough but it is manageable if you put in the time and the AK lectures is what was helpful to learn. We fell behind the syllabus and we did not go over every chapter, so if you plan on taking the MCAT, you are on your own.
This was one of his first classes that he was teaching at FIU so he was fairly new. He was an overall nice professor. He was easily accessible outside of school by email. For this class, we had 5 exams and 1 was dropped. Overall it was a good class if you are willing to learn by yourself sometimes using the AK lectures.
Need to give more visual content z
Professor Silva truly cares about his student's their opinions and how they are doing. He was always looking for opportunities to improve and make his students feel for comfortable.
He didn't know biochemistry and was learning with the class which made it hard to learn the material through him, If you take this course all the material will be learned through self-study.
He was nice, the material was hard. But he does his best, even with other students that may be disrespectful in class.
This was his first time teaching this course so it was bit of a learning process for both him and the students. However he is approachable and always willing to help if you reach out to him. He gives Extra credit for every exam and also drops one. Reading the text book for helped me a lot.
Dr. SIlva has potential to be a good Professor, but he was unprepared for his first year as one and needs a lot of improvement. Nonetheless, he has all the right motives to develop into a good professor.
He is a good professor, lectures were heavy on material but he provides sources outside of the classroom to help you study and pass! Gives lots of opportunities to better your grade! i would def take him again. Only little problem is that i dont believe i learned a lot on the chemistry side of biochem it was more biology and genetics.
Professor Silva was great at giving clear feedback on what to expect on exams, as well as reviewing exams with the class afterward, deducting any questions that most of the class got wrong. He gives lots of extra credit so if you do badly on an exam or two it won't drop your grade drastically. He is also very kind and cares a lot about his students
He mainly lectures and bases his reading quizzes and tests on the lectures and PowerPoint. If you read the textbook, and the PowerPoint, and pay attention to the lecture you'll be fine. He also offers a lot of extra credit.
He is a very kind professor and cares, quizzes in the beginning of most classes, usually gives extra credit after most exams that help a lot.
Professor Silva is a really caring teacher and will help out students with points towards their grade.
The pro
Professor Silva is a very understanding instructor who has one mission, help his students succeed. He is very approachable and you can tell he cares about his students as people and as students.
I liked this professor. I learned a lot.
It was his first time teaching our biochemistry course, I believe he can do better in the future.
You will have to study the powerpoints well because there will be a lot of specific information in some of the questions. Also there are often in class quizzes.
very nice and caring, it was his first time teaching the course so it was a mess at times, heavy on quizzes and exams, & gives extra credit. exams were very difficult and content heavy.
We found out it was his first time teaching this course. He is genuinely a really nice person and cares for the students. Just like all other FlU classes... you have to teach yourself everything. There were quizzes just about every class. The exams were pretty difficult, but one is dropped. If you're taking the MCAT, this class will not help you.
Very caring and respectful professor. Since it was his first time teaching the course, it was a learning process but I hope he'll be better in future semesters. The class is heavy in content and goes by fast. Make sure to do your readings and watch the AK lectures he provides, they are very helpful.
Great Professor if you attend lectures and read material you will pass
Dr. Silva is really friendly and values what students have to say about his lectures and class. Just a heads up, there might be quite a bit of reading and studying involved because he likes to quiz you. But hey, he's got your back-- he drops the lowest score out of 5 exams and even offers extra credit opportunities.
Overall, the professor seems to enjoy teaching and cares for students. He gives extra credit opportunities and listens when students struggle with test questions. There is a quiz at the beginning of almost every class. Tests and quizzes are based on lectures and PowerPoint slides. Video links are provided for more information on chapters covered.
This professor is new to teaching so his lecture skills aren't the best so taking him can be difficult. He is a caring professor but since he's new, his lectures will sometimes get confusing. The class grade is evenly distributed by 4 Tests and an optional final (cumulative), in-class assignments, online homework and in-class iclicker sessions.
Communicate
Tough curriculum, kind professor. The way he lectured got better toward the end
Communicate and communicate, that is the best way to succeed in this class. go to the lectures and make friends.
He is very passionate about Biochemistry and mosquitoes.
Very nice and caring!!! Lectures using Powerpoints. In-class online multiple-choice quiz sometimes on previous material. Several multiple-choice-question assignments on Achieve throughout the semester. 5 multiple-choice exams. Final exam only for students who missed a previous exam. Tip: study the AK lecture videos on Canvas. Offers extra credit.
Lectures consists of powerpoints and weekly quizzes. Quizzes help a lot with the test
Caring but be self disciplined. Watch biochemistry AK lectures (YouTube) and read biochemistry tenth edition by Jeremy m berg lecture slides before you take class. During class, try to understand lecture based off of the prep you did. Homework assignments are lengthy. A lot of quizes and there are 5 test, last one during finals
Prof. Andre Silva is a great professor. I think that being his first time teaching, it was awesome. Prof. Silva has a lot of knowledge and helps you understand why each topic is important and how amazing is life in the biochemical level. He is caring and genuinely wants you to LEARN. This is a hard class so be prepared to use all your resources.
He is a relatively new professor so he is still learning how to teach a class. Tests have 3 step verification. There is a quiz nearly every class. Online homework due every class. Powerpoint chapters are very big so you got to memorize a lot. There are 5 exams total.
Prof. Silva is a passionate teacher. The class is challenging, but the weekly quizzes and practice materials like unstuckstudy ai help a lot. Attend lectures, communicate with classmates, and you'll do well.
