My major is NOT economics but he assumes that everyone is a grad student. His tests are impossible and he doesn't care about students. He gets angry when you realize he makes a mistake. Class average is a C and he doesn't care to curve. Do NOT take!!!!
He is really helpful. Tough grader but the way he teaches is amazing. He is very intelligent and always ready to help. Teaches through slides which can get boring in a big class.
He expects every student to be a genius and gives you bad look if you don't do well in class. He never cares about your grade.
All he does in the class is reading slides, which gets extremely boring. His tests are the hardest I have ever done.
His lectures are boring and hard to pay attention to. He doesn't explain well during lecture and his tests are very hard. Prepare to have to learn the material outside of class.
The lectures are a reading of the slides with the occasional commentary about current events. The tests are tough especially if you missed a number on a test, like not knowing the exact current US debt. However, if you go to office hours, he is a nice guy. Originally, I had a huge interest in econ, but this class has made me reconsider.
he ruins everyone's interest to Econ. his class is a nightmare.
His exam is full of surprise & excitement
Professor Switala was a great teacher and really knew his stuff. His knowledge of derivations amazed me and I would recommend him to anyone who really wants to understand Econ-Stats. The exams are tough because of the time crunch, but he allows for a cheat sheet. Overall, great class.
He seems to be a nice person, and he makes some funny jokes in class. However, his lectures are very long, and he goes through material too quickly. He teaches his introductory class like a higher level economics class, so he is hard to follow. His exams are difficult and some of the questions require you to do your own research outside of class.
Switala is a horrible professor. Avoid him at all costs. Not only is he unfair, but he is also rude, condescending, and pretentious. I came into the class excited to learn because I have a passion for Econ, but it is safe to say Switala has changed my perspective towards it. WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Although he made the tests hard, was, in my opinon, good, as it really distinguished between the people who worked hard and were smart from those who didn't work hard and such. (This is with the assumption that harder tests more score range) For reference, my raw score in the class was a 88%, but he curved it into an A+
Switala is a great professor. He is able to teach in a crystal clear way all the material and to apply it to the real world, making examples and informing the class about current economic information. Furthermore, his tests are not that difficult, and if you show up to class you'll probably get an A.
Very clear in explaining concepts. Always available outside class. Discussions in the class are very helpful. Relates every concept to the real world .
Amazing professor. If you're taking for class because you like Economics or plan on majoring in Economics then you'll love him. His tests are tough but if you work hard you can get an A. If you want to take the class for credit then choose another section. People complaining about how bad he is are just lazy students who never come to class.
Amazing Professor! very very clear with the explanations of the topics. I have taken 2 classes so far and taking the 3rd now, loved his way of teaching. Can't ask for a better economics professor.
Would not take this professor again. He goes through material too quickly, never explains concepts but only shows the algebra. No one in class dares to ask questions even if they don't understand. Lectures are long and boring, exams are hard. Take another professor if you don't want to study everything outside of class just in order to pass.
This is the hardest class I've ever take for stat. If you're not confident with math, avoid with this class. The lecture is long and tedious. Too many formulas need to memorize and he moves too quickly. You really have to have good fundation for stat. The tests are hard and formula sheet is not that useful. The textbook is used is so unclear.
fair grader, and always available
This class was very challenging with him, but still, if you're taking EC303 instead of 203 you know what you're expecting. His lectures are maths based which is a good thing for an economist. He is funny and his lectures are interesting (if you care to follow) and detailed. The book wasn't really useful but he said it's the closest thing he found.
Hard and tricky exams. He explains things well during lectures but make it way harder during the tests.
Both lecture and discussion attendance is not mandatory. He really knows his stuff and his lectures are very clear, but he does go quite fast. If you've never taken any econ class, I'd suggest that you prepare beforehand. Tests account for 80% of the grade, so get ready to study! He also applies informative contemporary issues to the course.
SO HARD. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. THE MOST DIFFICULT PROF IN BU.
BE PREPARED FOR HARD WORK AND CHALLENGE WHEN YOU TAKE THIS CLASS. Really makes you learn a lot but not a good GPA booster in no ways. The class is heavily math-based. Also be prepared to learn about current world and put a lot of time into economics. He is sometimes hilarious depend on if there's someone can make him laugh(saw some non-smile review
Prof Switala is very good at applying econ to the real world and he is very clear in his lectures, but I would advise taking notes by hand as it is very easy to get distracted on a laptop in a large lecture hall and the material isn't so easily learned without listening to lecture. As long as you pay attention it is an easy class.
I have taken two of his classes. I don't like to be too critical, but in this case I gotta say he's a poor teacher. His lectures are boring and he reads from slides which are word-for-word sentences pulled from the textbook. You won't learn anything from him that you can't learn from the textbook. Just not a great teacher.
If you are interested in learning macroeconomics well & getting a good grade, DO NOT take his class. The reason most people do terribly in his class is because he simply does not know how to connect with his students. He stares at the floor during lectures and covers material in tests that are not covered in the book or his lectures. Save yourself.
The tests are difficult but he'll curve the letter grade at the end of the semester.
Not a good lecturer, he is so boring. His material isn't super hard though and tests are pretty straightforward. Have to get myeconlab access and do weekly homeworks, and they were kind of difficult compared to EC101 problem sets. Study from his slides and you'll do well. Use textbook as a supplement.
Took EC1O2 in Fall 2017 and got A from his class. But he is very condescending and aloof during office hours. Weekly homework on MindTap App is extremely inconvenient and unhelpful. Midterms and Finals are multiple choice ONLY! He taught too fast. Test random facts in test. If you look forward more than an A on transcript, don't take his class.
He makes this class too difficult. He has tons of slides per chapter which are totally useless. The tests were very tricky! You cannot imagine what kind of questions he may ask because he may ask you everything!!!! NEVER take his class if you want to get a good grade.
His tests are difficult, but, if you read and do your work. you should be fine. Attendance is not mandatory. I didn't go to a single class since the first one and I still managed to do well simply reading the book, reviewing his slides, and going over the hw.
Tough but great professor
He is a knowledgeable professor but seems to rush through his lectures to stay on schedule. He seems like a nice guy but could be a bit arrogant. He really makes you work for a good grade but you end up learning a lot in this class because of how hard he is.
No need to go to lectures. Just read the lecture slides on your own since that's what Switala does during his classes.
I took his 202 before so I think I can do a fair comparison. To me, I think his teaching style improved a lot over the past few years as he is much more hilarious and welcoming for questions(he does allow questions before but not as openly stated).Very knowledgeable about what he does, really makes you work for your grade. Would take again.
It is a hard class, some students just not smart enough to pass the class. I walk away with a easy A. Inspirational professor, really care about education, great.
NO. NO. NO. have a good grade in the class but not without a lot of work. He adds random facts that are not in the textbook. Goes on confusing tangents in the lecture. He also has really hard tests where he includes random small details that are irrelevant. If you want a good grade, go to another class.
Lecture presentations generally distill the information from the textbook well which makes reading the textbook a supplement rather than necessity. Professor makes effort to provide context as to why macro has implications for students in our everyday lives. Tests can be challenging, Adaptive Test Prep through MindTap is an excellent study tool.
He has a lot of knowledge, but doesn't realize his students don't have a phd, so he teaches too in depth, meaning you won't really understand a single concept. Get ready to memorize hundreds of equations and derivations
He has really dense, fast paced lectures that are extremely dry. It's basically just him writing a bunch of equations on the board and expecting to you to understand it as he says it. Going over the lecture notes he posts online is essential to understanding the material, because there he writes all of the economic intuition you need to know.
A lot of the higher level EC course reviews seem negative, but for EC102, he was, in my opinion, a great professor. Interesting lectures with cool anecdotes, very straight to the point, and humorous. Not an econ major but would definitely take a class with him again if I could. Also as a heads up theres no point in going to the discussions.
Really good professor who gives very interesting real life examples that help relate economics to the real world. Is a tough grader but great professor! Would definitely take again.
He delivers fair lectures but absolutely makes this course harder than it should be. The course material he covers is just basic economics principles. However, he tests lots of details on his real exams, which are quite different and harder than his practice exams. For ec102, I recommend taking other professors classes.
His lectures you honestly can sleep through, I just played on my phone during every lecture myself, however he is rather accessible after class for 15 minutes or so which I used to ask questions that would further clarify my understanding. His exams are easy, and don't require much effort to prepare (ie I got an A on the final without studying.)
Switala doesn't deserve the negative reputation, with 30ish students taking his 250 seat class. The material is dry, but he uses current news to make concepts clearer/interesting. There is not much hw required, and he has tons of office hours, even more around exams. Tests are MC and pretty fair, just read the book and actively listen in class
Not sure why Switala gets ragged on so much. People on here say he's mean/cold but he's not. He's just straight forward, his job isn't to coddle kids. He's passionate about econ and brings up real world examples to make the class more interesting. Tests aren't a breeze but just do the cengage tesp prep and practice exams and you'll do fine
The material was quite simple theoretically, but the exams were very difficult. Problem sets were easy. Exams often required additional reading in the textbook in order to perform at the bare minimum. Provides a very interesting perspective to the material, but exams were more than difficult. Course and exams were highly scaled.
- lectures the whole time. content can sometimes be dry, but he adds in real-world examples to make things more relevant - you can definitely tell that he has a passion for econ - can be funny during lecture - talks about his own economic views a bit - tests are difficult, make sure to review the slides and/or sample exams that he posts!
I took his EC202 class in the Summer. He explains the concepts really well and has very clear slides. Definitely do take his class if you have a passion for econ. Includes real life examples and tries to make a class less dry. Look at the problem sets, read the slide shows carefully before a test and you're good to go. No need to use the textbook.
Switalas lectures were very straightforward and sometimes dull, usually being read directly from the slides. However, his commentary and unique perspective coming from East Germany make him quite the interesting character. Hes an outspoken conservative economist, which is quite the welcome change from what one would usually expect at BU.
I took Switala for both 102 and 202. For both classes, the key to success is paying careful attention to his lectures; Switala likes to make small comments about the material that end up on the midterms and finals. As long as you pay attention and review the annotated slides that he posts, you should be fine. Also, in 202, the textbook is not neede
Prof. Switala is very knowledgeable in the field of economics, and it shows in his lectures. He discusses a lot on current economic topics and focuses a lot on statistics. However, he teaches this class as if we're in grad school. The tests are really hard and not that similar to the homework, but at least there's a curve.
Switala is not anything these complains are about, and if you complain about him, you either don't do the work, or you are just not an Econ guy and maybe you need to consider another major. He does his job right, and the workload is proper. Tests are the best I've seen that reflects the learning material. Take him! If you want to learn something.
Prof Switala is probably one the most knowledge person in the department and he is always eager to help students. Also, the class is not hard and it is one of the few econ classes in BU that you get to talk about real life and have discussions. Take this class!
the exams are super hard and if u don't pay attention in class you're screwed. then again it's super difficult to pay attention in class because no offense but he is not a very interesting speaker. good luck
Professor Switala is a great professor who really explains the lecture material and is more than ready to answer doubts and clarify them well. His grading criteria is a bit strict but excellent lecturer, one of the best at BU!
Prof. Switala teaches much faster than any other econ professor I've had, and I STRONGLY recommend taking really good notes while you're trying to keep up. He's very theoretical and will throw a lot of equations at you, but he also makes sure to explain the intuition for each new concept, and he seems to really enjoy answering questions in lecture.
Dr. Switala is very knowledgeable and his content is clear. However, the class progresses very fast so it is recommended you attend and work through the presentations. He sets a pset once every two weeks which is quite manageable but quite hard. He is also very understanding and helped me when I faced a personal issue.
Hes an okay professor. I understand some of the comments here because he rely makes you work for that grade. His exams are quite difficult. I took it during summer and his finals really made me wanna die. However, he likes to relate to current events and anecdotes to make the class more interesting. Overall, the class is not as bad as I thought.
RUN. RUN. RUN.
This is my second class with him (ec202 fall 2020). Hes a smart professor that challenges students to think hard about the assumptions and impacts of the models he teaches. He applies current scenarios to famous models that allow students to view our economy through a clearer lens. Make sure everything he writes on the board is in your notes.
His lecture's were extremely fast and confusing but they are recorded so you can always go back and study what you do not understand. He related what we were learning to current events which was interesting. Tests are extremely hard so be ready to study. Class will require a lot of self teaching if you are up for the task. Overall difficult class.
He is by far the worst professor I have ver taken. Very rude and condescending. The exams are hard sometimes. The lectures are very disorganized.
Switala's class is stressful, but isn't the worst. His tests are insanely hard but he will curve the class average around a B for each exam so as long as you keep up you'll be totally fine. Completely lecture based exams, copy down everything. His personal conservative anecdotes can get mildly annoying to listen to if you are politically inclined.
This class should really only be for upper-class men and/or Econ majors. He says everything once and assumes that you immediately understand every new piece of information given to you. The lectures are long and I had to watch the screen recording of each class at least twice because he will test you on the smallest details. Do not take his class.
Very knowledgable, but a niche professor. You will either love or hate him. For EC102 you really need to make sure to listen to lecture and read the textbook so that you get everything you need. Overall a good experience.
Very knowledgeable professor and slides have all the information you need for midterms. Lecture can get dry at times but he also does not make it mandatory as there are recordings. Grade is very dependent on midterms and final which are always MC questions that come from info on the slides.
This class was way more interesting than micro and switala makes it interesting by talking about current events. Sometimes the lectures get off topic but are not mandatory and the textbook used made it easy to get extra practice. If you study a little outside of class and follow along with general world econ you will do fine
Professor Switala is extremely knowledgable; I felt like the material in EC102 was too elementary for him personally so he weaved in a lot of complex ideas that we really didn't have to know/didn't have the capacity to understand since this is an intro course. But it was very interesting and I appreciated his perspective on policies & econ overall.
Very rude and condescending. Not fair to impose political views in class. Does not care about students. SAVE YOURSELFFFF!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Not recommended at all cuz this lecturer just gives a whole lotta words on the slides and talk about them. Nothing is really useful and the tests are super hard.
Unlike other professors, he is very dismissive and doesn't care about your learning. Good thing is you will find other profs extremely helpful and humble after working with him! If you have to take it, DON'T FORGET to minimize the difficulty of all of the rest courses in your course schedule! His lecture is applicable, but you are on your own.
I'm an Econ major and this professor was difficult. Didn't like his lectures. He's easy to access in office hours, but the tests are extremely difficult, and in my opinion not enough like the practice tests. Also, the class wasn't curved until after the final exam, so sometimes it was hard to tell where I stood (I had a C- before curve).
His class was information-dense and challenging, but I learned a lot. Grades are only based on hw/tests, meaning you are in charge of your own learning (teaches you a lot abt how to study for college). lectures r fast-paced and every piece of info he covers might show up on tests. Sounds scary but all you have to do is study the recordings
challenging and information-dense, but learned a lot abt how to study for college. every piece of info in lectures matters but he records them so just study them. he offers his views on current events which helps me connect econ theories and real world events. i don't always agree with his views but he also don't impose them on students
Long Lectures that are difficult to understand. Make sure you can understand the slides. and apply the concepts for exams.
Professor Switala's lecture was extremely helpful. The problem sets and exams were not easy but he was clear and knowledgeable about each macroeconomic topic in class. His lecture notes were structured, clear and easy to follow too. Do attend lecture and ask questions!
Switala is definitely the worst prof I've ever had. His lectures are super boring and difficult to follow. He is definitely a harsh grader.
Professor Switala makes EC 202 a challenging class. Extensive review of his slides and notes is required to do well in this class. Listening to his lectures also helps with understanding the material better. Generous curve.
worst professor ever! isn't a nice person and def a harsh grader. exams are harder than class materials
low key, prof makes class hard. the tutors at the erc, especially bhimraj saved my ass in understanding ec202 content (super passionate tutor)
Take this class and he will make you want to transfer out of this school. I used to pay $0.00 to attend Bu but thanks to this guy I now lost all my aid and scholarship. he is so awful. the class average was so bad and he still said "I want to make the next exam harder even though you guys didn't do well" who does this?? take this class and see
Ive been a 4.0 astute student all my life. Ive never seen a teacher with such eagerness to ruin someones grades and make ones life difficult. He is a very harsh guy. His methods of teaching are awful. Exams couldn't get much harder. This person is ruthless. He couldn't care the slightest bit about you or how well you do. His reviews match. All true
The content he covers a week before the exam isn't even relevant to the actual exam. His exams are beyond hard and no amount of preparation can do any good. It's almost as if he wants his students to fail. If you ask for help or guidance, he just refers to his class slides....RIDICULOUS. If you're looking for an easy F, take his class for sure.
He is harsh and rude. His lectures are very boring and hard to follow. He is especially rude during office hours as he expects you to know everything just from attending lecture alone. Don't take him and if you do I am so sorry for you.
It is not easy, but it is more than doable. Doing the textbook readings and problem sets will get you further than lecture content alone. People that say he wants you to fail are lying. He is not rude either. I wouldn't expect the lectures to be particularly interesting but that isn't Switala's fault.
If there is any person in the world that thrives on seeing me fail its him. Avoid at all costs.
If you want to find a person who can inspire you to drop out look no further than this guy. Run.
His exams make STEM weed-out courses look like a joke. Your life will be ruined.
Worst class ever
This man will make your life miserable. Don't take any of his classes.
He certainly isn't the worst, but he still is not a good professor. His stale lectures and textbook question homeworks do not prepare you for the difficulty of exams. On syllabus day he even boasted about the lengths students have gone to pass the class. I don't understand why teachers make exams that the course materials will not prepare you for.
His class was incredibly difficult, given that you're graded on two midterms, homework, and then a cumulative final, but it definitely isn't unachievable to get an A. His practice exams are pretty similar to the questions you will see on the actual exam. As long as you show up to lecture, study, and ask questions you'll be ok.
If you want to waste your money and time take this class. Worst ever.
If you're looking for an easy F, take his class.
His exams are extremely difficult and lectures are nothing relevant to his exam. He makes this class unreasonably difficult.
Switala is definitely the worst professor I've ever had. Do not take his course.
I would not recommend him as an instructor for anyone looking to gain a solid understanding.
His exams are extremely difficult, and the course was lecture-heavy, making it challenging for students to grasp the material effectively. Do not take his class.
His class is extremely difficult, and the course was excessively lecture-heavy, making it challenging for students to grasp the material effectively.
Tough exams, but have class recordings. Just listen again to class recordings and most questions can be solved. If you study there's fair chance not to fail.
bad lectures that are boring and make no sense, 2nd midterm had a 61% avg with low standard deviation and he chose to blame the students rather than his teaching. was very rude about graduate students on strike, could not follow him at all in lecture. the only thing that got me through this course was yt do liam malloy he goes over the same txtbook
Absolutely nothing from HW is translatable to the exam. Average midterm was a 60% which he blames the students for. If students are failing the exams it should be a clue to how the class is taught. i will say he is great at answering questions but overall RUN AWAY PLEASE
Made sexist remarks about women in Econ, do not take his class if you value your GPA
Super terrible. If you want to do tons of meaningless calculations in HW that are totally irrelevant to exams, if you want to listen to Western-centric or colonization views from a person with ZERO academic pub, if you want to challenge your GPA by getting a random grade, go to his class.
Nope, worst HW, lectures and exams are totally irrelevant. He always establishes that students who have learned something and encountered it in class would not explain it. Still, he doesn't realize that not all students have taken the prerequisite that he teaches and that each student learns more or less differently from one professor to another.
Best macroeconomic theory professor. Clear lecture. Clear lecture notes. Challenging problem sets. Challenging but fair exams. A rare professor that is able to efficiently teach the materials and getting students to understand theories without dumbing it down.
Took his class in summer so the pace is VERY fast but I'm also forced to pay close attention. His class is hard, lectures are content heavy and anything he says in lectures could show up on exams, so try to get above class average. Be aware that when the average is low the average letter grade is also low (B-). But you do learn a lot in his class.
Hard to reach via email. Knowledgeable professor and teaches very well. If you put the work in you will succeed but you may not end with a high grade because of the curves.
Honestly would not recommend. He is rude even during office hours and soooo hard to reach out to via emails or even at his office. Classes are too lecture heavy, tests are NOTHING RELATED TO THE LECTURE so be careful if you are picking him for your econ class. he just wants you to fail or drop out
Had Switala for EC202 and again for EC392 (int'l macro). Exams are the same situation, practice test that seems inviting but the actual exam leaves you confused. The curve is in your favour here. Probably due to a smaller class size, he seemed a bit more down to earth and relaxed, so a nice shift in vibe. He's better in smaller doses.
Bad job explaing, goes on tangents and all sorts of junk. Be ready to study almost everything on your own. the lecture recordings are HUGE. He does not know how to reply to emails. Tests are not that bad if you manage to separate all the useless info in his lectures. Funny guy but he makes a hard class harder take the other prof...
The professor is bad at communication and actually shows little care if students actually understand what he is teaching! almost everybody in my class wanted to switch to another professor is that was available. The test are super hard and he grades them very strictly
Had him for 202 as well. Exams are extremely extremely difficult and you never know what to expect with the curve until the very end. However, he is extremely knowledgeable and you will for sure learn a tremendous amount.
This class is no easy feat, but using resources like Unstuck study and reviewing lecture recordings can help you get through it. The content is dense, but putting in the effort can lead to solid learning.
You might as well just take this class and never show up to a single lecture, and just teach yourself. The only decent thing this guy does is give you practice exams. also, read the discussion section problems, they are helpful.
Professor said that he would teach an intermediate econ class as a graduate level course on the first day of class. lectures are super boring. makes easy concepts very complicated to understand. ended up dropping the class. would not recommend at all.
0/10; lectures have zero energy, I lost faith in studying this subject further after this class. Definitely seek a different profession.
awful run away as far as you can.
Seems to lack general empathy. Also the most boring econ lecturer in my time at BU (and that says a lot). Would not recommend.
Just try to avoid him. A lot of the topics he aims to cover are avoidable and unnecessary for an EC 202 course. His deep dive in to some concepts didn't really allow for a general understanding of macroeconomics which an INTERMEDIATE course should aim for.
The class itself could be so much easier if he actually tried to teach. He is the most boring teacher you'll ever have and gives no mind to if you're learning or not. Gives super hard exams, posts recordings so late, and just doesn't care. You'll do fine by watching the recordings and being above class average. I'm just praying for a curve atp.
Do not take.
boring class
Be prepared for very DIFFICULT exams
Though prof. Too many people hate on him, he's tough because the material is hard. Make sure to know how to draw all the graphs-- this is like 80% of the exam. Literally draw exactly what he did in class and you will get full marks. Rewatch lectures, textbook useless. Exams ridiculously difficult but he grades fairly and curve was veryyyy generous!
The professor doesn't show enthusiasm, and he just reads off the slides. I had to teach the whole course by myself, but the lecture recordings are useful. He goes through the content really fast, so stay on top of your work. But personally, I wouldn't recommend.
The class is so difficult mostly bc of the professor. Lectures are confusing, slide-heavy, and fast-paced. You are better off teaching yourself all of the content, which is what most students do. Exam averages are crazy low, but exam curves are generous to be fair. Weekly review and self-teaching content is required to stay caught up.
Good professor, lectures can be boring but he explains topics well.
Avoid Switala at all costs. His lectures are painfully dry, the material is outdated, and he's openly hostile to students who ask questions. The entire grade rests on a couple of exams with questions that have nothing to do with what was taught. He seems to care more about being intimidating than teaching.
Amazing professor. Does really know about the ongoing economic affairs, and does convey them in digestible manner to undergraduate student. His lectures can be dry and soporific oftentimes, but if you appreciate the knowledge he presents and purely are interested on economics (especially monetary policies), Prof. Switala is one of the best.
He's awesome if you genuinely enjoy macro. He's got dry humor but you can tell he loves econ. This is the kind of class where you get what you put into it. Also, a bunch of midterm questions are literally verbatim to previous ones.
great lecturer, always bringing current news. pay attention and attend lecture. it is a bit of extra work but he makes it so you take away a lot from the class other than the grade. people who say he's hard are just not trying hard enough. if you don't understand something go to OH, he will help you. ask questions. hard tests but extremely fair.
He is clearly knowledgeable, but is bad at explaining the concepts. it is a shame, because there are so many important foundational concepts taught in this course and you need to know them to pursue economics.
No academic background, hostile to questions and puts really difficult tests.
