Dr. B was the best lecturer I've had at Ohio State. Organic is fundamentally a HARD class, and the averages show that--her exams are difficult, but also pretty fair. Take advantage of her availability in office hours (I wish I had), do the practice probs, GO TO LECTURE!! You can gauge how you're doing based on averages. The class is curved!
Dr. Baldwin is an amazing woman and professor. Her class was very, very fair. If you do not end up with the grade you wanted, trust me, that's on you. She provides lots of resources. You put in the time, you will do very well. Her exams are difficult, as are all ochem exams, but fair. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. Curve is a godsend
Important info: Exam 1 - 128/200 (avg 118), Exam 2- 100/200 (avg 79) Final 164/300 (avg 134), 10 total quizzes two lowest dropped, above average on 8/8 of those quizzes. STUDY 4 THESE LIKE THEY ARE A TEST. They will help keep you afloat. Ended the class with a 61.5% and ended with a B in the class. Insanely hard professor but you WILL learn a lot.
One of the best professor's in OSU! Her problem sets are extremely helpful and her lectures are clear and informative. She is also really funny too! She has us students engage in the lecture and has a lot of office hours. Her class is hard but she prepares you well for future chemistry courses. Study from previous years quizzes and exams too!
Attendance in lecture isn't required but you won't get information anywhere else, plus she gives extra credit for attendance a few times. Admittedly she is a difficult professor, but the class is super doable if you put in the work. Biggest advice, don't get lazy after midterm 1 and MAKE THE REACTION NOTEBOOK WHEN SHE SAYS! It saved me on the final
Do all of her problem sets. Pay attention in lecture and take clear notes to study from. She is extremely organized which is in. Pay attention, do problem sets, do the old quizzes and exams. Just stay on top of the work and you'll be fine Baldwin is a good professor.
I had to retake organic chemistry, due to getting a bad grade. Dr. Baldwin's course was about equal in difficulty, but it was much better taught. She's extremely organized, providing all the material you could possibly dream of. Doing her problem sets and attending lectures is crucial to your success. Follow her advice and you'll do well.
Eh, Baldwin is a difficult professor and she doesn't always explain things in a way that is helpful to many students, her class is extremely dependent on her midterms that hare really really hard. Make sure you take your time on her quizzes and study for them so they can boost your grade. Do the problem sets they are helpful.
There was talk about how Baldwin was evil before I took her, but that was far from the case. She is very smart and well organized, and she actually cares about her students. However, the tests are very difficult, and it's necessary that you stay on top of the problem sets. It's a ton of work, but compared to my OChem 2 teacher, she was great.
Dr. Baldwin is by far the best professor I have ever had at OSU. She truly gives her all to her students & makes lectures not only engaging but fun. Her no excuses attitude necessary for this course. Her class taught me the value of hard work & pushed me to do my best. She is such a caring woman & truly wants all her students to do well.
Beneath all the color-coded notes and additional resources is a somewhat disorderly presentation of information. Topics are introduced before the fundamentals are set, and examples are given before the concepts are fully understood. That being said, she gives you plenty of practice problems. Those are a must. Lectures are a maybe.
Dr. Baldwin is definitely amazing, and her class was my favorite at OSU! Highly recommend to take her if you are taking ochem 1. She provides everything you need to be successful in her class, including a ton of practice problems.
A good teacher blames himself for being unclear. A bad teacher blames her students for not asking enough questions.
Her exams are difficult and the averages are around 50%, but that's normal for any OChem 1 course. She may come off as unapproachable, but she's very nice and caring. She provides SOO many practice problems and clearly explains her expectations. She teaches you everything you need to know in her lectures, and OChem 2 will be easier if you had her.
Ochem is hard, and Baldwin has high expectations. The good thing is that her expectations don't really matter because the class is curved regardless, and she has a ton of practice material. She can be intimidating to approach but is very willing to help once you get over that. Her reputation is a little overblown so just study and you'll be fine.
She was an amazing professor for a combined Ochem 1 & 2 class. She did a great job making concepts very clear and giving examples. She gives out a lot of handouts online and helpful practice problems. If you put in the time and effort, you should easily be able to at least get a B if not an A in her class.
Dr. B is the most organized professor and she responds very quickly to students who reach out to her. She can be intimidating to approach, but she genuinely wants to help you. Shes funny, gives good notes, and offers lots of extra credit and practice materials. Its challenging and stressful most of the time, but overall its a rewarding course.
Dr. B is amazing. Take her and you will learn O chem well even though it is hard. She taught me way more than I thought I could learn in a semester and I always knew she had faith in me as a student. She sees all her students potential and truly is a gem. I wish she was teaching 2520. Go to her office hours!!
I loved having Dr. B for ochem. She is super knowledgeable and provides lots of helpful resources. Do the problem sets and attend office hours! Provides extra credit for attendance and a few quizes.
Dr. Baldwin was my favorite professor I had at Ohio State. Even though ochem was hard, she didnt lower her expectations and forced you to know the material inside and out. Everything you need, she gives you, including practice quizzes and exams. Lectures are interactive and engaging. Prepared me so much for 2520
Dr. Baldwin is an amazing organic chemistry professor at OSU. She can be a really tough grader, but she leaves excellent feedback so you learn from your mistakes. She's also extremely good at explaining mechanisms which is super important in understanding these new concepts.
she sucks at her job
Best professor at OSU is an understatement. She provides practice materials from previous semesters, is super organized, and has frequent office hours. Its inherently a tough course but she makes you LEARN IT and you can tell she cares about your success. Put in the work and get out the rewards-- its really that simple. 110% would recommend!
Do not take her for 2520 unless you had her for 2510 because a lot of the exam problems are from her ochem 1 material which I never learned in my class. Also her exams are extremely difficult with the averages being around 40%.
She is incredibly knowledgeable. It is clear that chemistry is her passion. That said, I can't recommend this professor to anyone. Dr. Baldwin will give you problem sets and most of the test problems will be nothing like them whatsoever. She might say the test is on Ch. 15-17, and then a third of it will be on Ch. 8 without telling you. Be careful
Yeah dont take ochem with her if you can help it. She really sucks. And now, that Ive retaken the course with Dr. Turner (who is excellent btw) I can confirm that there are good Ochem profs out there. Really she just makes it harder than it needs to bethe crazy chalkboard notes she does, whats that about? Theres a better way- DONT TAKE HER
Rushes through content. Expects us to know the small details of every concept she talks about. Asks exam questions that include reagents weve never used before. Lots of study material but not enough time to go through all of it with 5 other classes. She gets mad at the fact the averages are 40%. Ive learned ochem1 through YouTube , not her.
Dr. Baldwin is a great professor. Do not take her if you are taking any other difficult classes because it will just make your life miserable. The exams are hard (and tbh kind of unfair). Weekly CHALLENGING problems, tons of (optional) problem sets, weekly quizzes. Get ready to work! :I
She seems to really enjoy how low her class averages are, almost bragging about it. She goes through the material so fast and expects you to learn everything on your own. She doesn't really seem to care much about helping students and makes her exams unnecessarily hard. Do yourself and your GPA a favor and please take someone else.
This teacher I would not recommend to anyone planning on taking organic chemistry. Do not take her class. If you take her class during the off-season please wait for the next because she is not it. She again IS NOT IT!!!!!!! She is very inconsiderate, especially since the COVID-19 outbreak. She is very arrogant, she should not be a teacher.
Dr. B is very tough. She expects you to know the material in & out. You will not see an exact problem you've gotten in practices/hw's on the exam. Ok. listen to me. Stop memorizing every "rule". Every single rule in this class has an exception. If you look for cut and dry if a then b, and if b then d not c, you will not succeed. be a problem solver
Dr. Baldwin is the WORST professor I have ever had. She shows a tremendous lack of empathy towards her students and is incredibly arrogant. She is very unapproachable and she does a good job of making you feel stupid if you ask a question. She is such a hard grader and her exams gave me so much anxiety. Good luck if you have her!
Dr. Baldwin is the worst professor I've had at Ohio State. During my Spring 2020 semester, she made the course-load exponentially more challenging, magnifying her lack of empathy towards students undergoing trauma as a result of quarantine. While she may know her stuff, you will come out of this class having endured severe depression. DO NOT TAKE
Baldwin is by far the worst professor ever. Her class was impossible and expectations were unreachable. Material on assignments/tests was way more difficult than anything mentioned in lecture. Averages on tests were in the low 40's which she gloated about in snarky emails. Showed no consideration for any students, even during a full-scale pandemic.
Worst professor I've ever had. She is way too arrogant to be teaching such a hard, complex class. She makes the class impossibly hard with class averages in the D/E category for every exam/assignment. When the entire class fails, it's the professor's fault, not the students. There are plenty of great professors at OSU. Please take a different one.
Dr. B is a very tough professor. That said, she gives you all the materials you need to succeed in a very hard class. She is accessible outside of lecture and is willing to help with anything. She will make you work for your grade. Provided 3 semesters of quizzes and exams with answers and 34 problem sets for various topics. She is also very caring
Probably the worst professor I've had. She gives you a ton of materials to aid with studying but none of it applies to what is actually asked on the exams and quizzes. She honestly doesn't care about her students at all. She loves how much harder she makes your life. Please take any other professor for o-chem.
She is by far the worst professor at Ohio State. She gives off the vibe of actually wanting her students to fail. She is more concerned with submitting students to the Committee of Academic Misconduct than she is working on a lecture plan that will actually help students learn. Do not take her.
Balwin has a scary reputation but she really is a very great professor in the way that she is passionate about teaching. Don't let the bad reviews on here scare you. I too was scared to take this class and I was able to earn an A by really putting the time in and attending TA office hours. I cannot stress it enough how helpful TA office hours are!
Horrible professor. She has no clue how to teach and is super cocky. The exams and quizzes are full of things you have never seen before and she makes them overly difficult for no reason other than the enjoyment of failing students. She tries too hard to make herself seem smarter than everyone else. Please take a different professor.
Probably the worst professor I've had at Ohio State. Belittled students during office hours when asking questions and acted like she enjoyed seeing her students fail. Exams and quizzes were unnecessarily difficult; sometimes testing us on material she said wouldn't be on there. OChem is a hard course. Don't make your life miserable by taking her.
As an alumni I can say that this course was my worst class experience by far in my entire career. Organic chemistry is an inherently challenging subject, but she belittles students, speeds through lectures, and provides a lot of material however it's overwhelming and not streamlined for exam content. Save yourself a potential retake. <3
Baldwin is a good lecturer but rude to her students and tests are very difficult. Had her when school switched to online, her online lectures were very organized and even better than her in person ones. However, she provided no flexibility to students regardless of work schedules or sickness (including COVID).Demeaning when questions are asked. Rude.
had her for o chem 1 lab and she made her own final instead of using the standardized one and the average was legit a 40%. tests way harder than you get prepared for. also she says she does partial credit but by that she means like 1/20 if you mess up :/
Dr. Baldwin is very intelligent and good at Organic Chemistry. That being said, I cannot say that she is good at teaching Organic Chemistry. She merely reads off of her powerpoints and goes ridiculously fast, not explaining concepts in depth or giving good explanations. During office hours, she can be kind of snippy when responding to questions.
Barely covers a concept and then exams and quizzes it on you harder than she teaches it. Calls students who are struggling immature and gives "reality checks" at office hours (in front of other students) instead of helping or admitting she isn't teaching well enough for the majority of her students to keep up. 50-60% exam averages, sometimes lower.
She has got to be one of the worst professors at OSU. She is OBSESSED with sending students to Academic misconduct meetings, probably to boost her huge ego. She will ridicule you for not understanding easy concepts (things that are easy to her, a Doctorate in Chemistry, are expected to be easy to undergrad students who have little experience)
Awful professor
Her empathy seems low. other professors seemed to understand this was a tough time for students, not a vacation, but Baldwin really made things harder than necessary and raised our anxiety making us wonder if we were committing misconduct all the time. ochem is hard but tutors and other chem profs called her exams extreme when I showed them.
Please do yourself a favor and do not take any classes with her. Her lectures are very simple and make the content feel easy however she ramps up the difficulty on assignments and expects a lot. I learned more from YouTube than her lectures. She is very hard to negotiate with. If you want to have a fair chance at passing, AVOID HER.
She does do anything with online classes, she just posts videos and expects you to learn ORGANIC chemistry by yourself. The average for tests are 50% and she curves her grades to make her average a C. Shes the worst.
Hello Dr. Baldwin I love organic chemistry, but you makes me understand how stupid I am on organic chemistry. I tell the truth, I used my all efforts on this class, but I still not make anything. I am very impressed and appreciated on your strictness, hardness, seriousness on teaching, and the respect on chemistry. I'll take your class again!
Takes any chance she can to screw over her students. A good teacher but not a good person.
worst professor I have ever had my entire time at uni.
She is the least understand professor I have ever had. Once the pandemic started, she began grading even harder while giving less lecture information. She will take off points for things that have nothing to do with the content of the assignment (using notability features to draw molecules, asking a question that you didnt see on the syllabus).
I wish I could rate higher, but I honestly feel like she grades maliciously. I had to fight so hard for my grade, but so many kids I know ended up failing. She doesn't care about her students even during a pandemic. Do not take her, she does not care about your future and she grades maliciously.
pros: good lecture videos cons: everything else. she is a horrible human being. i dont normally trust rate my professor ratings because i know students can be lazy. but jesus christ. dude. anyone deciding if they should take her or wait a semester. wait the semester. its not worth your mental health. she does not care about you.
The worst professor I have ever had. Impossible exams. Obsessed with COAM. Absolutely unhelpful and super rude. Seemed to just want to brag about how good she was at o chem rather than help students. Continuously told us what we were bad at and then made every graded assignment about it without trying to help us get better. Also, no curve.
Her lectures were informative, bus shes passive aggressive in office hours and grades hard. you can get coamed for copying and pasting a structure. I spent most of my time hoping I would pass the class instead of learning. If youre planning on applying to med school or grad school, avoid the stress and bad grade and pick someone else.
A horrible teacher and an even worse human being. Shes too worried about sounding smart than actually teaching. Her exams are impossibly hard. I would advise taking anyone else so that you actually have a chance to learn and enjoy o chem.
This is my third year in college and she is the worse professor I've ever had. She goes out of her way to ruin your college experience. She will COAM you for any and everything. Her lectures are useless on her obnoxiously hard exams. I'll pray for future Ochem students who take her.
Loved this class online. Lectures are short and so helpful. Im good at ochem to be fair, but even with hard tests I knew what to expect and what she would look for. She gave practice exams and quizzes and recitation & TA OH were so helpful. Quizzes werent bad at all. Highly recommend her online. Also homework was fine with OH help.
I took this class last semester and I cried every night because of this woman. Do not take. My GPA dropped SO MUCH because of her. Avoid her at all cost.
The reason Im no longer pre-med. Tanked my GPA. Watch out.
Hide ya kids, hide ya wife before she COAMs them too. Awful, AWFUL prof. Just take it at C state and transfer it over, it's way easier there anyways.
Do not take this class. I'm quite literally in the middle of my first midterm and i have never felt more stupid. She did not prepare us for the difficulty of this exam. I would like to cry right now but I am doing this instead. Do not put yourself through this pain, take anyone else. A sock with a smily face drawn on would be a better teacher.
I took her for chemistry 2510 (as a chemistry major) and got a C- after the curve. Wanted a redo so I retook it with Dr. Callam and got an A. All of the same exact material, just taught well. She actually got mad at our class because we didn't read or something and gave us 10 min quizzes at the end of every lecture. They were impossible. No good.
I have so many good things to say about Dr. Baldwin. I was TERRIFIED going into the semester, and she made ochem SO accessible for everyone to succeed in. I never felt afraid to ask questions. She gives extra credit and TONS (hundreds!!!) of practice problems. Practice midterms are identical style to exams. Really hoping I get her for 2520!!
Ugh...... I signed up on RMP today just to write this review! My goodness! You wont believe how relieved Im knowing she is on maternity leave from today on and Dr. Callam is taking over for the remainder of the class! My experience with Dr. B is like Im so stupid I cant even write a poem after having learned just ABCs
By far the worst professor I have ever had. She is clearly intelligent and she definitely knows her o chem. However, she is condescending af and her tests are impossible and she threatens to COAM absolutely everyone, which is stressful and stupid. Her tests are insanely difficult, do not take. It will save you so much pain
Worst professor I have ever had. I don't get why OSU even keeps her on staff knowing how much the students hate her. She makes you completely hate the material. Do yourself a favor and take literally any other professor.
Dr. Baldwin is a great professor but not a nice person. Her teaching style is amazing and I learned so much in this class, but she does not care about her students. Even the ones who go to her office hours every day and try so hard (and do well) - she is cold to the point of unprofessional. Take the class but don't try to get to know her.
She gives extra credit which is cool, but that's assuming you even understand the topic to get the credit. I had to watch Youtube videos to comprehend what she was saying. I tried SO hard to understand this material and it just didn't always stick. It made me feel worthless and stupid. She omitted crucial explanations to the material which stunk
Took her online class. Lectures were easy to follow but her exams/quizzes just did not match. Exams/quizzes and assignments were extremely difficult. Went on maternal leave and had Dr. Callam take over and he actually cared. The only class I ever failed. Take him or someone else.
Solid teacher. Lots of example problems/quizzes/exams. Just have to really put the time into the class. She's crazy about potential cheating but she's approachable and willing to help unless she knows you are putting in the effort.
One of the worst profs Ive had. Do better osu
Dr Baldwin is the worse teacher or professor Ive ever had. I dropped after the second midterm, took it with another professor and got an A no problem. Save yourself the trouble and just get another teacher.
Worst professor I have ever had. Having a professor like her at OSU makes me lose respect for both the Chemistry department and the University. How can a prestigious place like OSU keep a professor like her on the faculty when so many students hate her so much. Please, take O-chem/Lab from any other professor.
Dr. Baldwin is very sweet and definitely overprepares for exams. However, she can be kind of condescending and students often feel underprepared for quizzes and lecture. Also, it is reverse classroom so we have between 2-5 hours of videos to watch every week plus a recitation and 3 classes (which you basically need to go to if you want to pass).
Has been one of the worst professors I've had. She expects her students to understand so much information with little time. Another thing that I had to mention was that after our first exam she celebrated that the average out of all the 2510 professors was a 60%. Why celebrate that you failed half of your students and are a bad professor?
Rude/unfriendly at times. Expects you to grasp concepts right away even though it's an intro course. Many recent quiz averages are F's & only a couple are dropped from the whole semester. Watch lecture vids b4 class (which take 2+ hours to take notes on at times), do lecture checks, problem sets, rxn notebook, & come to in-person lectures to pass:/
Dr. Baldwin is a really difficult professor to have especially for an introductory course like organic chemistry. Would definitely recommend anyone but her if you want to save your GPA.
I saw her ratings before I took her class and I should have listened. Every person I told I had Baldwin told me to switch. The workload she expects you to put in to get a decent grade is absolutely bonkers and unrealistic. She is rude and if you ask a question for clarity, get ready for her to make you feel stupid and embarrassed.
this is the worst professor i have ever had in my life. she is passive aggressive and genuinely does not want her students to succeed. she is truly the reason i am switching majors. if you have her, please switch out. she will make you lose your passion you have for science and ruin your social life too.
She is the worst prof I have ever had her lectures cover insane amount of material that won't show up on the exams. she is very condescending and doesn't care about her students mental health. Take it with anyone except her.
She marked an answer wrong on one of the weekly quizzes when it was actually right & refused to give us our point back saying "I've offered enough bonus points this semester" (not rlly) and "one point shouldn't affect your grade." I don't care that it was one point. It's just bad morals and unfair of her to not give us the point that we got right.
Dr. Baldwin told us the first week of class that she includes an "impossible" question on every midterm. She would constantly say verbatim "this is why this class sucks" when prompted with difficult questions. To be fair, I think that was supposed to be encouraging, but given the class as a whole you can probably do better when it comes to OChem.
Provides more than enough information for exam. The main thing is to really understand the concepts rather than memorizing mechanism. If OChem does common exams again, shes the best professor to take for it.
If you want to learn ochem 1 well, take it with Baldwin and put in the work. It seems like she gives way more resources than the other professors. With common exams, Baldwins students were much more prepared. Baldwin can be strict and intimidating, but shes actually really nice! Answers emails quickly and is always willing to answer questions.
Professor Baldwin is the most knowledgeable you will have in your college career. The course is difficult and she will move class along at an uncomfortable pace. She wants you to be uncomfortable because she wants you to actually learn. Lots of resources. People who complain are people who are typically people who are not cut out for it.
If you are passionate about science, take Baldwin.I always tell people that she is like the teacher in high school that favors the smart kids. Class will be geared more towards advanced critical thinkers & people like to use Dr. B as a scape goat. If you use the resources provided, then you will be over-prepared for exams and love class with Dr. B.
Ochem is hard. She teaches very fast, can be rude, and her lectures often go way more in depth than necessary. Prepares you well for exams- lots of practice-but seems to care more about averages and beating other sections. Course is taught as flipped classroom style too.
Teaches very fast but the split classroom approach made it much more manageable. Dropped lots of your lowest grades, including 3 of 13 quizzes. If you keep up with the class and work hard you will have a great understanding of organic chemistry.
Dr. Baldwin is disliked by many but only because she pushes students to excel. Most of the people caught complaining are the ones who are not willing to put in the work to succeed in one of the hardest classes in college. Excellent teacher that prepared us perfectly for the common exam.
While organic chemistry is a difficult course by nature, Dr. Baldwin was effective in teaching the subject. She has explicitly strict, high expectations, which she makes clear by her teaching style and interactions with students. The common exams were beneficial, but Im not sure that theyre returning in the future, so prepare for difficult exams.
Many take their frustration of the class out on the professor. I truly enjoyed Baldwins class and I feel like from what I heard about the other lecturers teaching the same course, I was much more prepared. Yes, the assignments and quizzes she gives are much harder than the common exams we took this semester but it made the exams that much easier.
Let me start off by saying this class gave me stress constipation (which I had never experienced before). The subject matter is tough but has the potential to be very cool and interesting. However, Baldwin gives unnecessary stress to her students by giving outrageously hard quizzes. Lectures are nice but not comparable to her quizzes.
WHAT A HORRIBLE professor. Do you guys remember the time she got an answer wrong on the quiz, and then refused to give us all the point back because she was too lazy and her ego was too high to support her students? There arent enough characters to describe her as a professor. Go to Chang if you need someone who cares about your success!
While this class has been one of the most difficult classes I've taken; having to put many many hours into studying and understanding the material, Baldwin is not as bad as people make her out to be. Her problem sets are EXTREMELY helpful, and yes while some of the quizzes were difficult, if you put the work in, you will be prepared for the exams.
I struggled in this class. My mental health was awful this semester. I would take a different professor if I could. Lots of quizzes and homework. The lectures did not correlate with the hw. Exams were very difficult, usually the exam averages were low 60s. I had to put in a lot of time and effort just for a C.
Organic chemistry is extremely difficult, therefore it is important to have a good professor teaching you this material. Dr. B provided me with a great foundation during lecture and plenty of problem sets and homework to practice. Yes the tests and quizzes were hard, but if you put the work in you will be fine.
Here's how you do well in Baldy's class: Complete problem sets correlating to the upcoming quiz at least 2 days in advance to quiz; Go to office hours the day of your quiz to get any questions answered (Never saw anyone there until the day of exams); Spam her (her responses were always informative and concise); Take SOLID notes on vid lecs.
Here's how to ace Baldy's class P2 (Exams): Do 10 day study plan, redo PSets, redo past quizzes from your semester pertaining to upcoming exam, make QA sheet so you do not have to keep asking the same Q's, if common exams: Baldwin past exams were not very helpful. If non-common: take them fs. Office hours for smart Q's, email for dumb Q's.
How to get a B. Take notes, lots of them. Study a decent amount. Stress. Repeat. Her PS are intimidating but prep you for the exam very well. They make the exam look like a joke. I always struggled with the MC and found those problems to be the trickiest because she does not give a lot of practice for those. Everything is hard. Breathe. You'll live
She isnt very understanding or willing to help. I attended office hours many times and she was rude and wouldn't help students actually understand the material. Also, there are an excessive amount of lecture checks and quizzes for this class. She makes this class way more difficult than it needs to be
Organic Chemistry is a tough subject overall, but Dr. Baldwin did a decent job of teaching it. Has an excellent grasp of the material and an understanding of how to succeed in the course. She gives lots of required and optional homework, all of which is necessary to grasp the material. Lecture attendance, while optional, is necessary to do well.
Avoid! Went into ochem expecting it to be tough. Obvi, it was. But what I didn't expect was the lack of compassion from a prof. She would often make plain rude comments to students whether in office hours or in class. She acted superior. I have never felt like a prof was so unapproachable. And I say this genuinely, not just b/c the class was tough.
Didnt have an issue with her until I had to talk to her 1 on 1 to ask a question. Is so rude and doesnt help whatsoever and just makes you feel stupid for asking her a question in the first place. On the bright side she does give you a lot of resources to succeed but it can get very frustrating especially when you get stuck.
Dr. Baldwin may teach the material fine, but appears to lack compassion and empathy for others. If you fall behind or otherwise need help, you will find yourself reluctant to ask for it. Her condescending and superior attitude makes for an environment that is not conducive to learning.
Gets a really bad rep but I think it is because she teaches tough material at the level of difficulty needed. Of all my friends who had other professors, I was always the most prepared. Her tests are hard, but if you study and pay attention, you will be fine. She is really nice and cares for her students, gives the most resources. Best professor
I should have listened to these reviews. She's the worst.
I saw her reviews here but took the class anyways. I refuse to judge without my own experience. I engaged in lecture appropriately, went to office hours with relevance, and emailed her respectfully. I was met with disrespect and disinterest. I received no help 80% of the time. She is not a proper professor.
Dr. Baldwin is the type of person to promote herself and her teaching style, but all that's going on is us teaching ourselves. Ochem is not the course to do a flipped classroom strategy. I'm trying to pass the class and never deal with this material ever again thank you. Dr. Baldwin is not for you if you agree.
Avoid at all costs! Don't be fooled for the appealing time she has her lectures, it is not even close to a bargain. All other ochem professors record lectures or copy notes so missing class is not a big deal. Baldwin is the type of prof to make sure there are some students really struggling in the class. A B- is above the average in this class.
We are currently on SB, a time meant for us students to relax and wind down and destress from professors like Baldwin. She tells us right before SB that we will all fail the next midterm, which is scheduled shortly after break ends. She expects us to study for her class and do extra work over break. Why? And she's too lazy to do simple things.
Dr. Baldwin clearly understands the material, but lacks respect for students in her class. Why someone would enter the teaching profession only to have such blatant contempt for students is beyond me. You can read these reviews and consider that "hard" does not necessarily mean "bad", however, Dr. Baldwin appears to be purposefully cruel.
Dr. Baldwin is no more an educator than my dog. I don't learn much from my dog but at least my dog makes me feel good and listens. Idk how she has above a 2.0 rating, I'm drowning in this class.
I heard how hard ochem is. I played my cards right and now I take 3 easy GEs and ochem. I should be able to do well in ochem given the amount of time I can spend on it, right? So I thought. 50 hours in one week spent studying the material for the upcoming exam, and I bomb. No help given, lectures are terrible. Oh, and she answered 0/3 of my emails!
I leave this review on behalf of all my peers who also have Dr. Baldwin. It is unanimous that she is destroying our mental states, our overall well-beings, and our lives. None of us have learned anything in the class, even with countless hours spent attempting to study the material. Please take the class with someone else.
I'm taking very hard engineering classes as well as OCHEM and I have trouble balancing time. There's a large expectation to be able to do her long problem sets during the week but I can't. I do not attend lecture and learn purely from her problem sets, lecture videos and group study sessions and have been managing well. I would not recommend her
My parents both have PhDs in OCHEM and they admit Baldwin's teaching style is all over the place. She teaches from a standpoint that assumes we students know and have mastered everything. There are better professors here. I'd only recommend Baldwin when there's a general exam not when she's the only one teaching (usually during Summer and Spring)
Quite possibly the worst professor/teacher i've had through all my years of school. She expects everyone to know exactly what she is talking about immediately, and if you dont, she keeps moving on and gets angry/annoyed when asked for help. told us to treat this one class as a part time job, thinking that we don't have other classes. try to avoid.
Baldwin does not help students in any way whatsoever. If you go to her office hours she just flaunts her knowledge of o-chem and makes you feel stupid for asking a question. Her lectures did not help understand the material at all and she was horrible at teaching... which was reflected by the 52% average on an exam. Don't take her class.
Horrible professor. Baldwin carries herself with an attitude and treats any question as if it was the dumbest thing she has ever heard. She understands the material but clearly can't teach it. Ochem is hard to learn, but she makes it impossible. Just look at the 50% exam averages.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the most insensitive professors I have ever spoken with. She actively discourages students from asking questions and humiliates anyone who attempts to ask something. Any test she makes is about only special case minor scenarios, never the main ideas and takeaways from units.
50% average on a midterm exam. Okay, it's hard material. Dr. Baldwin says 50% is normal. Okay, she must understand the material is hard....but then proceeds to degrade us as learners. "You guys are not trying hard enough. Clearly you didn't study" What?? I don't ask for encouragement, but what is the use of discouragement? She has ruined my life.
Things I have learned from Dr. Baldwin this semester: -Professors don't have to answer your emails -Professors can disrespect you if you don't know as much as them -The right answers on exams are still wrong -Ochem is not fun -Professors only want tenure
Dr. Baldwin encapsulates all that is wrong with education in this country. We are too focused on memorizing pathetic nonsense details that aren't even found on Google. Dr. Baldwin LOVES these kind of questions where you find no assistance at all online. Why? It's 2022, if I can't find any help to a question, how relevant is this to my education?
I had Baldwin last semester. Barely passed. She made me think I was an idiot and I should change majors. I went into ochem2520 with a loser mindset, but I only thought this way because of Baldwin. Everyone else in the department understands the material is hard and cares about helping. Dr. Walters is an amazing professor and miles above Baldwin.
The reviews speak for themselves. People who get above a B do the right things to do well but are very much aware of the toxic learning environment Dr. Baldwin creates. I am on course to getting an A- and I think she is an awful professor. If you are unfortunate like me and have to take it with her, take a deep breath. Good luck.
She will humiliate you during office hours and lectures for the questions that you bring if they were either covered over before or if she finds the answer easy. Quiz and test questions are those "it's right but wrong" without giving any sort of partial credit or whatsoever. I understand ochem is hard, but to degrade learners like this is horrible.
BEWARE!! just don't take her it's not worth the pain and mental stress...
Will you pass? Most likely. Passing is not the issue in this course. Doing well mentally is the issue. Learning and self-belief go down the drain as a result of Dr. Baldwin's teaching style. I'm going to pass and pass with a healthy margin, but I'm walking out of this course mentally drained and truly unwilling to continue.
She is so bad. If you ask a question she will laugh at you. So now I don't ask questions. If you are nice, she will still treat you mean. She is on a mission to fail you.
There's not enough words for me to describe how angry CHEM2510 with Dr. Baldwin made me. She does offer lots of practice problems, the exams and quizzes were so much more difficult than any of the problem sets. Super tough grader, and makes you feel bad for asking to meet with her about grades. I would tell anyone to try for a different professor.
She is definitely not as bad as everyone makes her out to be. While quizzes and exams are really tough, Dr. Baldwin gave us multiple opportunities for extra credit points. Also, she has so many practice problems and other resources which tell you exactly what to expect on quizzes/tests. I enjoyed this class much more than gen chem.
Everyone hates Dr. Baldwin, but I thought she was an amazing professor. Her classes are tough, but I thought she was a really great lecturer. Personally, I prefer the flipped classroom, so if you don't, you likely won't enjoy the class.
To truly succeed in this class, you need to already be genuinely smart, and you need to know how to teach yourself. You also need to be prepared to dedicate an incredible amount of time to working outside of class, so much so that you will notice yourself falling behind in other courses. Exams are noticeably more difficult than other professors'.
Pros Gives very good lectures Provides lots of practice problems Decent curve & easy exams Cons Extremely condescending Actively tries to COAM students Has an extremely lazy attitude
Dr. B is one of the best professors ive ever had. Yes, the class is hard. Yes, you have to work A LOT. But, she gives us plenty of resources to succeed and is always available to help. Guys, dont blame her if you dont put in enough work. Shes not going to make it easy, but its totally possible to do well in this class. Just ask questions!
The content was heavy, she made it even harder by writing the quiz in her own words so student have no other choice but watch her video to understand the lesson. The recitation quiz is hard and you loose haft point for every gramma mistake. Tests looks easy but actually tricky and graders looks for your mistake as if they are diamonds among grass.
She was always on time for class and accessible during her office hour. The class is well organized and the homework questions are very detail and clear. Tests were easy compare to her homework and the content are all in the problem set. She could answer all my questions and even knew which of the 37 problem set the questions were from.
literally the worst professor. if you make even the tiniest mistake, it drops your grade by a full letter grade. I'm not kidding. any bad luck you have in lab, you're graded on it, even if it isn't your fault. literally if you make ANY tiny mistake, she will make you keep that grade, even though it drops you a full letter grade.
Dr Baldwin is an amazing professor and has very clear lectures. She gives more than enough resources to succeed. If u put work into the class you will be fine.
Her impact on this class was minimal, but she tried to meddle whenever possible. Boasts being accessible by email but gives extremely unhelpful responses and shuttles you to your TA. Refused to give points back on an all or nothing quiz for something that was a technology error even when evidence for correct work was given.
Worst proff I have had at OSU. Beware if you have her.
You attend lecture 3 days but the rest of the week you stay at home doing LC quiz. No matter how hard you work on the weekly Lecture check, point deducted for a single missing arrow on exam is double the point you earn after 3 hours listening to her video. Toughest grader ever. Beware
Class has just started and I've never been more stressed out in my life by a class. Dr. Baldwin is unapproachable. If we go ahead in the material she claims we are not there yet but then she seems to expect us to know everything. It's not a pleasure to be in her class. I should not be paying tuition to get "educated" by her.
I had Baldwin in SP19. She was awful. Her exams had below 50% averages. She would go through 200+ students' hws to sniff out cheating. I saw people wrongfully accused of cheating just because they got the right answer. My brother has her now, doesn't seem like she is heading in the right direction and OSU is ignoring her behavior. Awful.
Instead of encouraging students, Dr. Baldwin created an unwelcoming learning environment. Her repeated warnings of "If you forget to do xyz, I won't give you points!" and false guiding to incorrect answers followed by statements like "If you thought xyz, you would be WRONG!" came across as patronizing.
She could also forgets how to spell remember.
Not worth taking at this school, get transfer credit from another
Dr. Baldwin goes extremely fast and you are expected to have a solid understanding of materials immediately after watching the lecture videos. Beware, she will claim organic chem isn't memorization based, but will expect you to memorize many functional groups, pKa values, etc. She expects you to devote 50 hours per week to her class.
Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life. Baldwin ruined my life.
Here are some nice things to say about Baldwin:
I emailed Dr. Baldwin about help for advice and clarification for an upcoming test. Here is her response: "[This question] pertains to last week's lecture. You would not ask [this] if you attended lecture. It is too late for me to help you. Good luck." I attend every lecture and it's still one week before the test...
Flipped classroom is an excuse for twice as many lectures a week. Each week has 3 hour long class periods, 6 lecture videos which can take 5+ hours a week to watch and take notes on, 3 lecture checks (quizes) a week in addition to a recitation quiz. And expected to complete "problem sets" and practice quiz's every week. ALL 70 FUNCTIONAL GROUPS!
When her past 30+ reviews have been 1's, that should tell you enough about her. She expects you to either A) learn the difficult concepts the moment she speaks it or B) spend 8 hours a day to learn them. LC's hard, quizzes easy, Exam...good luck
I worked so hard for her class, I attended every lecture and office hours until I fully understood the concepts. But her exams are impossible. At the end of the semester, I approached her that she was being harsh grading my exams. No partial credit? She said I should have put more effort. 4 hours a day apparently was not enough for her. Disgusting.
The woman is not receptive to constructive criticism. She does not believe in group learning. She does not believe in educational second chances. She does not believe in fair points, incentives, or motivational study. *SHE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN SUCCESS*. She epitomizes everything wrong with education in the modern age.
Please read. Last week I had an interview for medical school application. The discussion took a turn when my interviewer took notice of my C+ in this class. It cost me my admittance. Baldwin does not create success, she diminishes hope. I hope she reads this. You are ruining lives Dr. Baldwin.
Dr. Baldwin is not a bad professor, she generally cares about your grade in this class. She does make the exam a bit more difficult. She gives a lot of helping problems for practice to make sure you understand. Make sure you pay attention and ask a lot of questions if you do not understand.
While she does teach all of the information, she does in such a fast way that 30 minute lecture videos take me at least an hour to understand and take thorough notes. Unrealistic with some exam questions; we didn't need a Lewis ABC question when it was barely talked about in lecture videos. Had to read whole chapters of stuff I didn't understand.
I studied with a peer for an exam. We were the only ones to put a couple unique incorrect answers on the exam. Baldwin was suspicious and we proved we did not sit near each other. Baldwin still did a greater investigation through our phone providers, emails, etc. No evidence because there is none and we did not cheat. She still deducted points.
I had a couple similar answers to a classmate on the exam and she took extra points off even after we proved we did not cheat. The woman even went through my phone and laptop and found nothing and still is so stubborn. She took a lot of displeasure from our innocence and even greater pleasure when she still took off points. Evil.
Dr. Baldwin is aware that she speeds through the material and creates overly difficult questions on exams that are unlike any practice material. While she claims that bonus points are built into the class, she makes them extremely difficult and sneaky. She claims to want questions during class but is often unfriendly and unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE
Worst
Take all neg reviews with a grain of salt. This is a hard class--hard work is exp, but Dr. B provides with you all the resources needed to learn and understand the content. I haven't touched the textbook once cause her pre-lecture vids, lectures, and practice sets are more than enough. I wouldn't rec anyone else & Ik plenty of people would agree.
Dr. Baldwin is such a great professor! Even though she seems strict, she is very kind and welcoming to her students. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit, and the midterms are not so bad if you put in the work. I wouldn't recommend anyone else for this class! Good luck!
I took Baldwin last semester. Just to make it clear the 5 star reviews are completely misleading. The highest possible letter grade in this class is an A due to the unique course curve, it is impossible to finish with an A+. There are no extra credit opportunities in this course either. Please beware of these reviews.
Thanks to her I got to bond with my research tech lol. Told him I got her and he's telling me how he failed ochem with her and was able to persevere and she's what motivated him to prove her wrong. But really she's a garbage prof so far
I really enjoy Dr. Baldwin! No, I am not one of her TAs. She gives you TONS of practice problems that are similar to the exams. Yes the class is a lot of work. It's O chem after all. If you put in the work to learn and study then you will do fine. She gives out tons of extra credit. I recommend taking her class!
Words cannot genuinely express how grateful I am that Dr. Baldwin was my Chem 2510 professor. Her flipped classroom format helped me be prepared for lectures. More importantly, her lectures always answered my questions and covered the material at the perfect pace for me. I am most thankful for all of the extra opportunities that she had.
Yes I agree she is not that bad and not deserve these many negative reviews on here. Her in class lecture is understandable if you invest your time understand the videos and ace her LCs, which is tricky. After all LC worth only 5 points, quizzes are basically practice problem and test are not tricky but require you to do it careful.
I like Professor Baldwin as a person because she is intelligent and makes me laugh sometime. But I don't like her as the professor because it is extremely difficult to understand how to do well in the course. I am studying too much and I fail the questions I study from her assignments.
I'm counting down the days for when I can wake up knowing I don't have to deal with her anymore.
Takes her more than 24 hours to respond to email.
I literally retook this course to get a better grade than my original B- with a different professor and I somehow did even worse. It does not matter if you know the material or not Baldwin is looking to fail as many people as possible. I dedicated more time than the other professor and still did worse in her class.
I had extenuating circumstances for missing lecture (broken leg) and she won't allow me to make up for a missed lecture quiz.
There is nothing else to add to the other reviews. It's nothing but the truth that she is devastating.
If you've enrolled in the class with her as professor you've already failed. The people who "do well" in this class are no different than people who win the jackpot in the lottery.
The fact that from the last 30 reviews, the "Did this professor use textbooks?" question is split evenly between yes and no says A LOT about this class. It is disorganized and lost. Should you follow the textbook? She recommends it, but doesn't follow it and if you do follow it you'll fail because she is teaching a different ochem as far as I see.
I knew she was really bad so I got familiar with the material over the summer with my brother's notes from a different professor. It didn't help because the other professor was not aggressively tough and made the material easier. Baldwin makes the material harder than it needs to be and will cut your grade at every opportunity. Save yourself.
I'm way too frustrated with her. I asked her for help and feedback on the exam and she told me I should have studied more...Sure, I'll study more than the 5hr/day one whole week before the exam, but I was asking for help not ridicule.
Her teaching style is disorganized and unhelpful. A good professor should motivate students and have excellent communication skills, she does both inversely. I've begun to avoid office hours because of how much of a waste of time they are. She laughs if you ask a bad "easy" question and forces you to do the work yourself for the hard ones.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the most effective professors I have had at OSU. She definitely does not ask easy questions, but I found this helped me to truly understand the material. She utilizes a flipped classroom format, which works very well in my opinion. She was always clear about what we were expected to know and provided plenty of resources.
The most recent top review was written by a TA. Do not fall for this propaganda, she does not deserve anything higher than a 0/5. Even a 1/5 is generous.
Let me help fix the fake high reviews. Ochem is not the right class for a flipped classroom and everyone fails because of this. She provides USELESS resources that do not help with her exams. It is unanimous with 200+ students that she is the worst and her teaching style is terrible.
Even the high reviews written by TAs can't agree on whether she uses the textbook or not. She told me to use it one day and scolded me for going by it another day.
Her questions are so hard. I studied for 30 hours for one exam and didn't study at all for the next and got the same grade. I'm open to suggestions for the next exam.
Wow. Throughout my education I have never had a worse professor. Andrea Baldwin is horrible at answering questions. She will just laugh at you or tell you to look on carmen. Now I understand Organic Chemistry is a hard subject, but she makes it near impossible. Good luck having a social life when you are in this class. Super inflated ego. Avoid her
I got diagnosed with hypertension because of her.
She's a bad professor and a bad person with no redeeming qualities. Her lectures are not engaging or entertaining and she is not funny or caring. Someone was crying at office hours and she completely ignored it like it's normal and an integral part of being in this course.
Ochem is a difficult class with complex material where exams are supposed to be difficult and studying a lot is integral to doing well...It is essentially common sense to everyone who enrolls in the course. With this professor, you are forced through a much more difficult and rigorous version of a normal ochem class. Save yourself, avoid Baldwin.
Organic Chemistry is by no means an easy course and Dr. Baldwin is not an easier professor, however she provides the class with many resources and opportunities to do well. If you are willing to put in the work she is willing to help you! I have attended her office hours multiple times this semester and she is very helpful each time. Thanks Dr. B!!
If you are considering taking this class with this specific professor I recommend seeking therapy.
Organic chemistry is a hard subject, and she does not make it any easier. Her tests are hard, and the average are
Organic chemistry is a hard subject, and she does not make it any easier. Her tests are hard, and the average are always lower than other professors.
A good professor and a funny person! Happy thanksgiving :)
She has a reputation of being the worst professor at this university and it says a lot when most are terrible.
I truly don't understand the hate Dr. Baldwin gets. She is the best professor I've had at OSU so far. You will learn a ton but you have to put the work in if you want to do well. Luckily, she gives more than enough resources to prepare you for exams and quizzes! Her teaching style is an adjustment but very effective if you try your best to adapt.
She is an average professor but has no redeeming qualities. It's difficult to think of anything that makes her stand out as better than her peers and colleagues teaching the same course.
There's no way an actual intellectual can go through this class and decide to give her a 5 star review. Luckily, the explanation is that she asked her TAs to write those reviews. They are not written by real students.
Its a hard class but she does care & is working hard to improve the class. Gives a lot of extra credit + the tools to succeed, it just takes a lot of time & effort! I got a 65 on MT1 but now have an A, don't give up! Reach out to her for help & do lots of practice Qs (especially PS) & rewrite key ideas & make a rxn book! I never used the textbook
It's a hard class. She does not care and is unwilling to improve the class. No extra credit, no tools to succeed, you'll fail even with a lot of time and effort. I got a 70 on midterm 1 and still have a C. She is unwilling to help or give practice questions. Reaction book does not help. Textbook helps more.
She claims you'll do better on the MCAT by taking her class...but the averages for the other ochem professors are higher than her students' scores. The statistics are online.
I had COVID, emailed her explaining how bad my symptoms were and that I would need more time. she told me still do the assignments or to take zeros as COVID is not an excuse, even after I sent her proof from the university that I tested positive.
Dr. Baldwin uses the slew of practice problems she uploads online as a means to disguise the fact that the classwork does not adequately prepare students to try and excel at them. Yes, she has provided "tons of resources," but if the style of the class does not help students understand how to use them, then they may as well just be gibberish.
Dr. Baldwin praises her abilities to find ways for us to soak up the information. Her rxn book is nonsense. You spend hours working on it and it helps with nothing. Her "practice" problems are nothing like the problems we actually get graded on! Lecture questions are undeniably a waste of my time. She does not like to give herself as a resource.
Had to contact my high school chemistry teacher to help me through this class. Dr. Baldwin's office hours were useless and she never responded to my email in a timely fashion. Taking points off for no reason. Pretty sad that an average high school teacher gives more help and value than a high paid professor at a top class university.
I do not really get where all the bad reputation comes from. The flipped classroom works great for me. You don't even have to attend lectures to do well. All you have to do is understand the material. It's really not that hard. Force yourself to genuinely understand what you are doing; I guarantee you we do well.
I don't get where her "bad" reputation comes from. She provides so many resources for you to do well in the course. She also hands out extra credit like candy on Halloween. Is Ochem hard? yes. Is it easier using her resources and practice problems? Yes. Would 100% take her again.
If you can manage a heavier workload in your schedule you should take Dr.Baldwin. She prepared me so well for ochem2. She provides many resources and is transparent with what will appear on exams which not a lot of professors will do. Nothing is more nightmarish than trying to study a poorly organized course, so avoid that with Dr.Baldwin.
She will be the only one who is teaching this course and ochem 1 is required for any pre-health major. Giving her positive reviews hurts other students. OSU please give us another option, Baldwin put us under mental stress every single day and utilize any chance she could catch to wreck our GPA. She is the worst.
She's really bad but I somehow did well enough in the class and it was amusing to see other people struggle and deal with her nonsense. If you're smart you'll be fine and you get the added bonus of seeing her belittle everyone else on a daily basis.
Dr. Baldwin truly doesn't deserve the hate she receives, as she provides so many resources for her students to do well. She responds to emails very quickly and provides awesome feedback. Yes, organic chemistry is difficult, but the best tip to succeed is to practice and really drill down the basics, which I believe Dr. Baldwin does very well.
This is orgo so you naturally have to be intelligent to succeed in this class. With that in mind if you come to class ready to learn and put effort into teaching yourself the concepts you will do fine. Focus on studying for the quizzes and the exams will come easy. Baldwin does a fine job teaching some people just don't pick up on conceptsgetbehind
I only did well bc I spent HOURS deciphering her 2x speed speech in lecture vids. Stay on pace the whole semester bc if you fall behind quizzes won't make sense. Don't take the practice exams, they will confuse you. Thoroughly watch the lectures and do every problem set and you will survive. Read the textbook if ur confused on something. Good luck
She's great! Super easy class. Super friendly teacher and she is really lenient with grading exams too! Her class is always fun and relaxing, she makes sure you aren't overworked and have enough resources to always do great!
She's great! Super easy class. Super friendly teacher and she is really lenient with grading exams too! Her class is always fun and relaxing, she makes sure you aren't overworked and have enough resources to always do great.
Dr. Baldwin is one of the best ochem professors at OSU. She sets her students up for success by providing practice exams, practice problems, and online lecture videos to watch before attending lecture. Ochem is a tough subject, ultimately it is up to the student to make use of her resources to succeed in the class. Dr. Baldwin is truly amazing!
Dr.B once told us about her favorite animal and she welcome everyone to bring their cat to lecture for extra credit!
Super fun class and professor and it's an extra bonus that she is really nice and friendly with everyone. I look forward to seeing her at office hours. Fantastic professor and great friend!
I will continue to defend Dr. Baldwin to anyone who has an issue with her. I'm currently in 2520 and miss her lectures and learning from her so much. Her class is fast-paced but I found her flipped classroom to be an amazing way to learn ochem. She cares a lot about us and is ALWAYS working to improve the class. Please don't listen to the hate.
So far this is the best class I've ever taken! Awesome professor I'm so glad I didn't listen to all the reviews!!
Such an awesome professor, she replied to my email in literally 5 minutes and she actually cares. She extends deadlines all the time and is really easygoing with grading. It's a hard subject and she knows it so she emphasizes that we don't need to know everything.
Exams are based on lectures. Put in the time for lectures and understand them, and you will do great. Quizzes and Lecture checks are straight out of lectures. Very organized and thoughtful!
Not sure why she receives a bad rep when it comes to ochem professors. Explains material extremely better than anyone else in the entire chem department. She also gives an insane amount of extra credit throughout the semester to prep your average before a midterm. Midterms are obviously difficult, so you need to study. Grading is fair.
Provides way to much material, had a flipped classroom for my year that did not help at all. She will explain something once and proceed to go into a very complex problem and expect you to know it right off the bat. Acts as if her class is the only class you are taking.
She inefficiently utilizes the flipped classroom style. The tests are designed for you to get a C or below. To be honest, I'm not sure how anyone gets above that. I have disabilities and found this class quite inaccessible which was my downfall. Take it at CSCC.
Class average on our last midterm was ~34%, she then spent ten minutes belittling us over how it was our fault and that we all weren't trying hard enough. Suuurely it wasn't the one thing all 300 or so students had in common (her.) She is inefficient in the classroom, and the flipped approach just makes at worse. If you want to learn ochem, run.
One thing you must remember before taking Ochem with ANY professor is that it is supposed to be complicated. This is a weed-out course because of its rigor, but Baldwin gives tons of resources to set you up for success. I believe I did well because 1. I had a tutor from day one 2. I completed the provided resources 3. I gave this class my time
Her lectures are clear and well-summarized. She gives you a lot of resources to prepare you for the exams. She expects you to put in some work, and you should, because it's a hard class. If you figure out the way she grades things and the types of questions she asks, you can succeed. Her lecture checks are sometimes unnecessarily stressful though.
Baldwin tries her best but ultimately is not accessible outside of class and the tests are impossible. i tried to go to her office hours and there was always a line out the door and i had to wait like 45 minutes just to have one question answered. some of the tests had in the 30 percentage average (which indicates a teaching issue). good luck.
Attend lecture! That is the most important key to success with this professor. There are occasional chances for extra credit by attending lecture every day that YOU WILL NEED at the end of the semester.
Terrible memory to think back.
Her problem sets are super helpful and she even gives us all the lecture videos.
Do not let other people's opinion influence your mindset heading into her class. Her tests and quizzes are Herculean tasks, difficult in amount and complexity. However, she does provide materials (Problem Sets, Previous Tests) that allow you to excel in the class. Those who don't put effort are not prepared for OCHEM 2, or any rigorous STEM course.
Dr Baldwin gives you everything you need to succeed but has a very hard class. Exams were super hard but extra credit is often and the homework boosts grade.
Dr. Baldwin is a great professor and one of the best I have had. It seems like those who think she is "mean" don't understand her tough love. It is undeniable that she wants you to succeed and she gives you all the ins and outs of the content with lots of practice. The class is immensely difficult, but anything worth doing is!
I truly found her difficult in the beginning because ochem is a new language and students are thrown into the deep end. She moves fast but relays the information really well and gives a ton of practice help. You'll have to go over things multiple times to get the grasp becuz of her speed. She can be rude I think when answer questions though.
Baldwin's efforts to provide resources and explanations are unfortunately often mistaken for her "making the class harder" or adding unnecessary work. The fact is, ochem is a brutal course, and if you don't keep up with the class (like me), your grade will suffer. Baldwin's exams, while tough, are fair, and she goes above and beyond to prepare you.
Organic chemistry is inherently very difficult and this Dr. Baldwin's course is no exception. Although she feels hard to approach, Dr. Baldwin teaches quite well and provides lots of resources to help students succeed. I felt more adept in a lot of the concepts than peers in lab who had different professors. Expect the quizzes/exams to be brutal.
She provides more than enough resources to be successful such as previous exams, practice problems, and lecture videos. She answers emails very quickly and is really helpful. Weekly quizzes are hard but force you to keep up. Exams are difficult but fair. I feel like I learned the material very thoroughly and am glad that she was my professor.
Dr. Baldwin seriously will set you up for success in organic chemistry. if you dedicate your time to this class, you will 100% succeed. She gives SO many resources to practice and a great amount of extra credit. Quiz drops help too! Great prof, would recommend. she always answers her emails quickly and with very detailed replies.
She will teach a topic one way, then test for it completely differently on her quizzes. It makes the information from her lectures useless. A hypocritical style of instruction is in no way beneficial to facilitating a healthy learning environment; it only makes certain that students learn to distrust their professor.
Everyone will tell you that OChem is a difficult class, but Dr Baldwin does her best to make it 10x as challenging just because she can. Condescending, ridiculous grading, and cannot seem to understand that she is the common denominator when everyone is getting a 30% on an exam.
Baldwin herself is rather blunt, but extremely organized; never felt like I didn't know what was going to be on the exams or quizzes. Practice exams are actual past exams from the course, which I liked. Amount of content can feel overwhelming, so stay on top of things. Would take her for 2520 if I could.
I was initially scared to take Dr.Baldwin, but then I realized people don't want to or can't put in the amount of work it requires. Dr Baldwin does not baby you like some professors I have had you need to put in the work yourself and earn it. The best advice is to prepare before and after class, attend all lectures, and use her practice material.
She gets a bad rep, but it is obvious that she cares about her students and success in her class is not impossible. She gives more than enough resources and although her quizzes are tough, she gives enough drops and is always trying to get feedback and change her course. Only complaint was exams are really tought. Gets undeserved hate IMO.
Dr. Baldwin has lots of practice material such as problem sets, practice quizzes, and practice exams, that correlate to the exams and hw, I did not attend lectures but watched her online recordings and completed every practice material available and did fine in the class. Make sure you utilize the practice material
She gets a bad wrap. Her class takes a lot of work, which is expected out of a class like ochem. she is really nice and gives you every opportunity to succeed. People get upset that it requires a lot of work and overall knowledge, but after taking this class I feel very prepared for my next steps as this information was learned! Baldwin was great!
She gives a lot of resources which are super helpful and a big reason why I succeeded in ochem. Her lectures move super fast and a lot of the learning is done on your own. The biggest problem i had with her was that she would make students feel so dumb for asking questions both in lecture and office hours
She's very smart, and also a good teacher. She provides tons of resources and practice material. She is, however, by far the rudest, least considerate, and most unfriendly professor I've ever had. For that reason, I would highly recommend to not take her class.
Ochem is always going to be a hard class, but find another instructor. Poor lectures, rude and unwilling to help. She acts like someone asking for help is such an inconvenience and rolls her eyes. I wouldn't care so much about that if she was actually helpful, but she doesn't even answer or explain the concept.
Dr. Baldwin's class is no walk in the park, but she gives you all the resources to succeed. Her lectures move quickly, so self-study is key. Utilize the practice materials and unstuckstudy ai - it really helped me prepare for exams. Tough, but rewarding if you put in the work.
Ochem is a hard class and you will need to be ready to put in the work, but baldwin teaches it in such a way that you will have a really great understanding of it. utilize all the resources she gives to you, it teaches you so much. i wish i had her again for ochem 2; her midterms have gotten easier over the years and she has a good curve
I took her class in 2021, and it seems like she hasn't changed. She is a good teacher that, if you were a Chemistry major like me, you would appreciate greatly. You will have amazing understanding of the material, given that you use the materials she provides you. This class took up ~1-2 hrs a day studying. Have a study group for LC to get 100%!
Good things: big curve (B -> A-), exam seemed to have gotten easier thru the years (still HARD tho, the final avg was 44%), & easy assignments/EC to help grade. She teaches great, you can understand everything but the exams are on level 100 for no reason. This the 1 class you should make friends in. She's better for 2510 esp for pre-health ppl.
Dr. Baldwin was a great professor! If you actively are trying to be successful in this course, you can do it with Baldwin. Ochem is a hard class universally, and I believe I was successful because of her. Also, she gives a lot of additional practice in case you feel uncertain about a subject. All in all, love her and would highly recommend.
I could not follow lecture, I felt like the professor went through examples so fast and repeatedly insinuated we should already know how to do things while we were actively covering that section. It was a really demoralizing experience. I did not enjoy the flipped class room set up as it felt more like an online lecture with a 200person recitation.
Doc Baldwin is phenomenal. She truly does care about you, even though some people may disagree. She is very clear on the expectations and provides endless amounts of materials to prepare you for exams and quizzes. I can see why some people dislike her, but she tells you how it is, and I see how that may offend people, but she does look out for you.
homework took so long. exams were impossible. lectures were extremely lengthy. do not take this class with her. and on top of everything, she is incredibly cold
I really enjoy O-Chem and loved the material, but Dr. Baldwin is the worst professor I have ever had. I am shocked that Ohio State continues to allow her to teach given how unpopular she is with her students. Incredibly rude, condescending, and thinks she is smarter than everyone else. Please take this difficult course with a different professor.
Genuinely the worst Ohio state school experience I have had since stepping foot on campus. She emphasizes how she can tell we aren't doing practice problems, her midterms are entirely impossible application and mixing concepts. Weekly quizzes, ALEKS that takes 7+ hour alone. Recitation worksheets for a grade. Unreachable and rude via email
She runs a tight ship, she takes student feedback seriously (and simultaneously proves the folly of democracy), and she is relatively responsive to emails. Her demeanor can be off-putting to students who don't know what they don't know. Help her help you! Side note: Dr. Baldwin, if you see this, please don't hurt my friend in 2510. I love her.
Dr. Baldwin's class is FAR from easy, and she will push you as a student, but she makes sure you actually know what you're being taught. If you're not ready to work really hard to learn organic chemistry she is not the teacher for you, but if you're willing to strap up your boots and get to work she'll be your favorite professor.
I like that she provides a lot of practice but the answer keys to check your work are not helpful at all (ie. If you mess up, you'll never know why, and if you ask her, she will be as condescending as possible). I tried my hardest in this class and it still wasn't enough. I took it with Jennifer Walters over the Summer and got an A. Incredibly rude
I don't agree with the reviews that Dr. B is a bad person, I think she cares and wants her students to succeed, she just makes it impossible. Her tests are ridiculously hard, and she goes through lectures so fast, its impossible to keep up. My class asked her to slow down and she laughed at us and told us she wasn't going to listen.
Absolutely amazing lecturer, one of the best I have had at OSU. She gets an absolutely absurd amount of hate simply because some people dont know how to study, fail exams, and need someone to blame. Her notes are extremely organized and she teaches very well. Exams are not at all impossible, very fair rather. All you need to do is study properly.
The lectures are extremely fast and I never understood the content until I reviewed the notes. She has online lecture videos and great resources which are super helpful for catching up and reviewing. MT1 avg was around 80% and MT2 was around 50%, so don't get lazy after the first midterm (or ever because you will be humbled so fast)
Good lecturer, exams are awful. Told us that we shouldn't be upset about an exam being hard because our average was higher than previous courses. She told us that there will not be a curve because class average is above a 70%. The way she announces exam results feels slightly disrespectful towards struggling students, from an outside pov.
I check the clock every 2 minutes hoping time gave up like I did. Don't take the class unless you are an unemployed students with no other classes.
Professor Baldwin ruined my life for a semester. Gave up on my dreams because of how bad she was at teaching.
She told me to my face I wasn't going to pass. Does not cover material in lecture well, just goes over mechanisms and tells you to go study it and learn on your own. Gives homework that sometimes takes 2+ hours to do. She gives good materials but acts like her class is the only class you're supposed to be taking. Does not account for others
Baldwin is so hard to read, and I genuinely can't tell if she wants you to succeed or not. shes an okay lecturer but likes to embarrass you when you don't know things/ask quesitons. she also has very little empathy/ any filter so be prepared to cry and feel horrible about yourself if you have a meeting w her (i know from experience)
I absolutely loved Dr. Baldwin. Her lectures were concise, good, and there was so much practice material to work on until you figured the conceptual part. I did every single practice set and it helped me so much to succeed. Unpopular opinion, but the people who complain about her being impossible don't put in the work it takes to succeed.
Baldwin gets in the way of her teaching through her narcissistic attitude and genuine dislike for every student. She has no place teaching on a college campus. I learned a ton in this class because of the studying it required to place well on her exams. Her pace is impossible to keep up with. Ochem isn't that bad, but she makes it worse.
Listen to me, if you have a good critical mindset and are not a procrastinator, take this class. If you are pre- med take this class. She will be helpful for mcat prep with the way she makes you know the specifics. If you arent pre-med or suck as critical thinking run away.
It's understandable to dislike Dr. Baldwin based on her past actions. However, she has taken student feedback seriously and made the course more tailored to students' needs. Dr. Baldwin gives you all the resources you need to be successful in her course. Use problem sets and past material. Keep an open mind entering her course, and you'll be fine.
Dr. Baldwin teaches really fast and uses ALEKS, unlike other ochem profs—so expect weekly modules. Her tests are super long (8–9 pages), but she gives lots of extra credit. She can come off condescending when answering questions, but likely wants to help. Just be ready to learn a lot on your own.
Pros: Is intelligent, high energy, and a good orator. Cons: Extremely condescending and unhelpful, will expect you to put in 20-25 hours a week for her 4 credit hour class, does a poor job with practice problems (she will insufficiently explain a concept and then give us significantly harder homework and quiz problems). Take away: Avoid Dr. B.
I really don't understand the overwhelmingly negative reviews of Dr. B. She can come off a tad condescending at times, but I always took it as just being more direct and to the point. She teaches the concepts clearly and I truly feel like my understanding of ochem improved dramatically from ochem I. The first midterm felt unfairly hard, though.
Dr. B. is very clear and concise when she speaks, and answers questions clearly. I had a family emergency and b*mbed my 2nd exam. I'm taking her again this fall as she's very kind and the amount of resources she provides is INSANE! She is very fast-paced (helps with ADHD). Go to class, do the problem sets, and remember the curve. You got this!
Her class provides a lot of resources that can be helpful, however her lectures move very fast. She also made a lot of comments about how difficult her exams are and will tell you that you are not going to pass. Overall it was very unmotivating and would not recommend her
You can tell she like ochem and doesn't have time for people who don't like it.
Dr.B is smart enough to take on student feedback to make improvements. And yet her true narcissistic and nasty nature comes though throughout the semester as she says things in lectures and talks to students and "answers" their questions. This class is better than when she first started teaching. She is worse/more condescending since she started.
Dr. Baldwin is a hard professor, but if you put in the work you'll be very prepared for the MCAT/DAT/etc. She provides many resources to succeed.
does not care about her students
She prepares you and helps you with infinite resources so you know exactly what will be on the exams and quizzes. Just use the resources she provides you and you will excel in ways you didn't know was possible. She has 100s of points worth of EC and truly makes it hard for you to fail. I took her for Ochem 1+2 and did better in Ochem 2. Take her.
Baldwin is a little hard but gives a lot of resources to succeed
She espouses a most heinous style of instruction. Her lectures move quickly, and if you fall behind, the jaws of failure await you. Furthermore, she prides herself on positing difficult queries; making a hard subject even harder is despicable. Seemingly profligate effort is actually insufficient in earning an acceptable grade. Steer clear, reader!
Avoid Dr. Baldwin at all costs! She is the most passive aggressive person I have ever met. Her exams are incredibly difficult and MT2 averages around 45-50% with a curve built in. At least she can teach the material. I did well in the class but it took too much work!
Quiz averages have been in the gutters (single digit out of 25 for the past few weeks) and she doesn't want to make it any easier even though the class is suffering. Took her for 1 and did well but she's just out of it this semester. Don't recommend her anymore.
She subbed for my intro class for a month. Doesn't answer student questions; if you ask a question she will say "you should know that already." Very passive-aggressive and doesn't understand that undergrads surprisingly don't have PhDs in chemistry. Explains content well but doesn't like you.
Lots of resources, professor is good at explaining, but uses ALEKS for homework. Using a website program for long reaction mechanisms that you have to write EXACTLY the way it wants or it doesn't mark it as correct is beyond me. The professor's own mechanisms would be marked incorrect by the website btw, huge waste of time. Avoid if packed semester
ruined my life
Dr. Baldwin is GOATed. Her exams/quizzes are basically the problem sets, she gives so many resources, and she actually wants you to do well. Office hours are super helpful, expectations are clear from day one, and her lectures are organized, and straight to the point. Take Baldwin and thank me later.
rather get 670 wet willies than have another interaction with her. tanked my gpa massively and i got an a in 2510.
She's definitely not the most personable, however she does provide a ton of resources and every exam had 25 extra points built in. Also my grade got curved at the end from a B- to a B+ so there is definitely wiggle room. Weekly quizzes and reaction notebooks also gave a buffer. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but I will be taking her again.
